A RECAP ON LAST YEAR Worthing Birdman 2014 will never be forgotten by those who witnessed history in the making. After years of trying, Northumberland daredevil Ron Freeman smashed through the 100m mark on a perfect eight knot wind to claim the ÂŁ10,000 jackpot. Ron flew a breathtaking 159.8m as crowds packed on the beach gasped in astonishment. Minutes earlier he had seen friend and rival Tony Hughes punch the air with delight after soaring 117.1m over the emerald green ocean.Thousands cheered as the drama unfolded on a glorious sunny Worthing afternoon. Will we ever seen the likes of it again? Well, hold on to your hats - they are coming back for more!

WHAT DOES BIRDMAN MEAN TO SUNNY WORTHING? In an eggshell, it puts the town on the global map! Thousands of fans flock into town to watch magnificent men and women in their flying machines launch themselves from Worthing Pier.TV camera crews from all over the world film every twist and turn for an audience of millions! Last year’s record-breaking competition was thrilling to behold and generated headlines across the planet. Not only does Worthing’s reputation receive a massive boost from Birdman. So do restaurants, cafes, bars and shops as hordes of spectators seek refreshment and retail therapy. Few will forget Ron Freeman shedding tears of joy as he realised his lifetime dream of winning the jackpot by smashing 100 metres. With £10,000 at stake it’s a deadly serious business, but a splendid spirit of camaraderie also prevails among top-flight pilots preparing for take off. Their dashing aeronautical escapades are further enhanced by eccentric fun flyers who raise many thousands of pounds for charity. Rival resorts would desperately like to wrestle from Worthing the prestigious Birdman crown, and the kudos that goes with it. But they’ve got no chance, for Worthing is today the internationally renowned “Home of Birdman”. And long may Worthing continue to bask in that luminous global spotlight! INFORMATION ABOUT THE WORTHING BIRDMAN EVENT A successful jackpot prize winner must achieve the challenge as forward distance flown; and must also cross a marker buoy set 100 metres from the end of the launch ramp with allowances being made for any movement of this buoy in the water. The Birdman Event first took to the skies in 1971 from the lifeboat pier in Selsey; in 1978 the organisers were told that they could no longer use this pier and so the event moved along the coast to Bognor Regis where it grew in popularity until 2007. When Bognor Pier was shortened safety concerns were raised over the depth of water for the Birdman Competition and in 2008 the event moved again; this time to Sunny Worthing. The 2015 event is the eighth one to be held in Worthing and the Birdman continues to attract interest from all around the globe. The platform is made out of scaffolding and is west facing to take advantage of the predominant wind direction in this area. The launch platform stands around 15 ft (4.6m) above the pier decking and during flying the height above sea level is approximately 35 ft (10.67m).

Competitors will have a run up distance of approximately 15 ft (4.6m) and they may use a flying machine with fixed, rotary, or ornithopter (flapping) wing design but the wing span cannot exceed 30 ft (9.1m).

THERE ARE 3 CLASSES FOR ENTRANTS TO CHOOSE FROM:

1 2 3

Leonardo Da Vinci Serious Competitors who design and build their own craft Condor Serious Competitors who use modified hang gliders or a similar craft Kingfishers Fun Competitors; the comic entries who raise money for charity

09

HOW IS THE EVENT MEASURED? With the launch window at high tide lasting only two hours, it is vital that the distances flown are measured quickly Trigonometry and bespoke computer software are used to measure distance flown and time in the air. Distances flown are measured using three electronic angle measuring devices that are set up level with the launch platform and on shore. Triangulation is used to accurately pinpoint the competitors’ landing position. All competitors will be measured using the same measurement constants that are calculated and input into the computer before the start of the competition. On splashdown the angles are recorded electronically by the three measuring stations and are entered into the Birdman computer which calculates the horizontal distance flown in any direction using trigonometry; it also calculates any small margin of error which can occur through fluctuating tide swell. A successful jackpot prize winner must achieve the challenge as forward distance flown; and must also cross a marker buoy set 100 metres from the end of the launch ramp with allowances being made for any movement of this buoy in the water.

WATER SAFETY The Worthing International Birdman is an extreme event and the safety of our competitors is our Number 1 priority. To ensure that competitors are well looked after we have a great water safety team in place controlled by Worthing Beach Office. There are ribs patrolling the exclusion zone perimeter to ensure that craft not involved with the event do not cause obstructions, a rib with divers and a paramedic to ensure competitors are safe in the water, jet skis to recover competitors to shore, and boats to recover craft and debris. After each flight the boat with the Worthing BSAC dive team and paramedic will approach and divers in the water to that the competitor does not need assistance. The paramedic will check each competitor before clearance is given for them to be taken back to land by Jet Ski. Once they arrive at shore at swim team on safety lines will assist the competitor to shore.

WORTHING BSAC “Worthing BSAC” are a scuba diving / sub aqua club that teach and go diving. We’re a branch of the British Sub Aqua Club (the governing body for sports diving in the UK) and have an active diving and social calendar. We offer training from beginner up to advanced diver. We welcome new and existing divers (from all agencies), and dive from our wet moored Diving RIB based in Littlehampton as well as organising trips around the UK and abroad. We meet every Monday night at 8:30, alternating between Splash Point Pool for “wet” training, and the Broadwater Working Men’s Club which is used for socialising and theory training where we have the sole use of the function room & bar.
