FORWARD F.ThirtyEight is a group of new photographers. They take their name from the technical term used to describe the aperture of a lens. F38 allows for a broad focus, a large depth of field. This is not an arbitrary choice for this collective, it is one which reflects their broad interests within photography. Their personal and photographic pursuits are varied, from reflections on masculinity and gender stereotyping through portrait photography, to fashion images which reference Japanese cinema or use knitted props. There is still-life photography which explores the Periodic Table, and brings the characters of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to a digital generation. There is documentary work which engages with contemporary British culture, from children dressed as the Hindu god Krishna, to young couples displaying confidence beyond their years as they prepare for the Junior National Ballroom Dance Championships in Blackpool. All the contributors are joined, however, by an ability to create work which communicates their individual visions, and at the same time show a real understanding of context and commercial possibilities. Having spent three years studying photography at arguably the best degree of its kind in the United Kingdom, the BA (Hons) Commercial Photography, at the Arts University College at Bournemouth, they have already made an extremely important decision in their lives. Striving to set the creative agenda for the future of contemporary commercial photography may sound like a grand ambition, but through determining rather than pursuing trends, these photographers have the potential to do so. This exhibition is testament to their ambition and hard work during their studies. As the F38 photographers embark on their professional careers outside of the supportive environment of the AUCB, their course, colleagues and tutors, it is worth considering the words of Cartier-Bresson when asked to describe the world famous photographic agency he, and a small group of like minded photographers, founded: “Magnum is a community of thought, a shared human quality, a curiosity about what is going on in the world, a respect for what is going on and a desire to transcribe it visually.” Cartier-Bresson reflects on the notion of a photographic community, a vision that is only achievable through a collective desire. The BA (Hons) Commercial Photography course aspires to be such a community, and like any successful community, it is as strong as the sum of its parts. The exhibitors at this exhibition are now part of that proud history, and as such have a responsibility to continue to make exciting and creative photography.
