SECRETS OF GREAT EYP VENUES

VENUES’ HISTORY The session took place in several locations which have fascinating histories. This project aims to give a quick overview of some of the history of the buildings used during the session. Catholic University School (CUS), where our teambuilding and committee work took place, was founded in the 19th century. It was originally named St. Laurence’s Academy, founded in 1850, and lived at 15-17 Harcourt Street. The school became close with the Catholic University of Ireland, the forerunner to UCD, and was envisioned as a feeder school for the university. It was renamed to match this purpose. In the 1860s the school was taken over by the Marist order due to high costs. The school was moved to its current location on Leeson Street and opened there on the 29th of September 1867.

TUD (CJMO & GENERAL ASSEMBLY) Lower House The Lower House of TUD Grangegorman was part of the Richmond Asylum, later known as St. Brendan’s Hospital. It was designed by Francis Johnston, who also designed the General Post Office in Dublin. The asylum eventually covered 30 hectares and at its peak in 1896, served over 2000 patients. It was closed in May 2013 at which point only 60 patients remained. In 2019 it was refurbished to be used by TUD and was finished in 2020. It now contains student facilities such as beanbag sofas.

St Laurence’s Chapel The fine establishment in which our GA takes place was built in 1854 to serve the asylum. It was designed by W. Murray, the nephew of Francis Johnston. The building was the Catholic church for the asylum but was shared by Catholic and Protestant patients until the Church of Ireland church in 1860. The church now hosts events – such as EYP – but also holds Mass on a Thursday.
