WHAT PRICE PRESIDENT OBAMA’S BIG GAMBLE? Controversy surrounds President Obama’s decision to release five senior Taliban terrorists from Guantanamo Bay, this in exchange for Bowe Bergdahl, the last remaining US trooper held captive in Afghanistan. There is little doubt Obama’s strategy is risky, not least the fact that it will embolden terrorists to seek out more kidnap targets in future days. How much the CIA and Pentagon knew of his decision remains to be seen, but it is evident few politicians, if any, were aware Bergdahl was to be set free. And what of the many stories that paint Bergdahl in a very different light to those previously published? The facts regarding the young trooper will eventually out, but for the parents of several soldiers killed in previous efforts to locate him, this affair at the very least must be confusing. That the released men may return to terrorism is quite possible. This must be good news for the Taliban and bad news for everyone else - especially those charged with security and counter-measures. And if anyone doubts the Taliban’s prowess for violence and planning, just take a look at the complex operation they performed at Karachi Airport in Pakistan - this coming just days after the Bergdahl deal. For those intelligence watchers (some ironically attached to President Obama’s White House) who only recently issued comments about the decline of al-Qaida, events in 2014 have certainly silenced many. Boko Haram in Africa have created a stronghold in Nigeria, and the group plumbed new depths in April when its cohorts kidnapped nearly 300 school girls. In Iraq, hundreds of al-Qaida terrorists took the important city of Mosul, including its airport. MI6 are finding it increasingly difficult to operate in Libya after numerous al-Qaida franchises decided to work more closely, and in other countries thousands of operative are aligning themselves to the terror group. Perhaps more worryingly for the West, Syria continues to attract thousands of young men willing to join al-Qaida against President Assad’s forces. Against this backdrop organisations such as MI5 and the FBI are now having to place numerous men who have since returned to the UK and USA - now armed with explosives and weapons knowledge - under surveillance. One of these men is Mashudur Choudhury, a Briton who fought in Syria. He became the first person in the UK to be jailed in respect of the conflict. In another case, American Monar Abu-Salfa who travelled to Syria and joined the al-Qaida franchise Nusra Front, died after blowing himself up in a restaurant. There is every likelihood according to Eye Spy US sources sooner or later terrorists like Abu-Salfa will strike at home. The situation is mirrored in countries across the world, with Germany, France, Holland, Spain, Italy and Sweden (to name but a few) now issuing warnings. MI5 has already started to prepare for the tenth anniversary of the 7th July 2005 bombings, and just like a decade ago, the real threat may come from British nationals. If an attack does happen in the United States or elsewhere connected to the five freed terrorists, President Obama may regret not consulting with his colleagues in Congress, who seemed oblivious to his actions. There is just sufficient space to mention we have at last news on Eye Spy’s long-awaited book - The Insider’s Travel Guide to 500 Spy Sites in London. Further details on this and the highlights of Eye Spy 91 can be found in the brief overview. A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF EYE SPY INTELLIGENCE MAGAZINE 91 FOLLOWS...

500 SPY SITES OF LONDON EYE SPY’S FIVE-YEAR RESEARCH PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION Eye Spy will shortly be releasing publication details of its five-year research programme into the London locations associated with the rich history of British Intelligence.
