Judging by the increasing numbers of hens that come to visit us at the Bilton Veterinary Centre, it would appear that many of us are discovering what great pets hens can be. Not only are they friendly, attractive and inter-active but best of all they lay an egg! There are three types of hen to choose from and your choice will depend on what you want from your hens. The ex-bat, as the name implies is a hybrid egg layer who has spent her first year in an intensive egg unit and has been lucky enough to be re-homed to enjoy some freedom. The Battery Hen Welfare Trust co-ordinates the re-homing of ex- battery
HOW ABOUT A HEN OR TWO?
hens and lots of information is available on the BHWT website. An ex-bat will need a period of re-cooperation but may then lay you an egg nearly every day. Battery hens are usually brown in colour and have been bred to produce large numbers of eggs. However, if you want a pretty hen, take a look at the many traditional breeds. They won’t provide you with as many eggs (none at all in winter) but they often have beautiful plumage and a much greater life expectancy, 10 years compared with 2-3 for a hybrid layer. If you want the best of both worlds, choose from one of the many smallholder hybrids which have been bred to combine good egg production with good looks. They are prettier than the hybrid layer but won’t produce as many eggs. Bantams are miniature hens and I think very under-rated. Although they lay a smaller egg, they also have smaller feet and are consequently much less destructive

when scratching about in the garden! Cockerels, contrary to popular belief, are not required for egg production. They do however crow loudly at antisocial times of day and night, can be aggressive, will annoy your neighbours and are best avoided! Initial set up costs for hen ownership can be high. A fox proof hen house is essential and a secure run will be required unless your hens are going to be lucky enough to free range. Whatever you choose make sure your hens have plenty of space and access to grass. Small runs will need to be moved onto fresh ground frequently. Feeding is straightforward using the commercially available layers pellets or crumbs. It is however illegal to feed kitchen waste due to the risk of disease spread.
