LITURGY OF THE WORD First Reading

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Daniel As I watched: Thrones were set up and the Ancient One took his throne. His clothing was bright as snow, and the hair on his head as white as wool; his throne was flames of fire, with wheels of burning fire. A surging stream of fire flowed out from where he sat; thousands upon thousands were ministering to him, and myriads upon myriads attended him. The court was convened and the books were opened. As the visions during the night continued, I saw: One like a Son of man coming, on the clouds of heaven; when he reached the Ancient One and was presented before him, the one like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship; all peoples, nations, and languages serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed. The word of the Lord. R/ Thanks be to God.

10

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 97 Richard Proulx (1937-2010)

The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many islands be glad. Clouds and darkness are round about him, justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne. R/ The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the LORD of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory. R/ Because you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth, exalted far above all gods. R/

11

Second Reading

2 Peter 1:16-19

A reading from the second Letter of Saint Peter Beloved: We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that unique declaration came to him from the majestic glory, “This is my Son, my beloved, with whom I am well pleased. We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven while we were with him on the holy mountain. Moreover, we possess the prophetic message that is altogether reliable. You will do well to be attentive to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. The word of the Lord.

R/ Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

G Minor Peter J. Latona (b.1968)

Matthew 17:5c This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. R/

Gospel

Mark 9:2-10

V / The Lord be with you. R/ And with your spirit.

@ A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark

R/ Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John, and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. Then Elijah appeared to them along with Moses, and they were conversing with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here! Let us make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He hardly knew what to say, they were so terrified. Then a cloud came, casting a shadow over them; from the cloud came a voice, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone but Jesus alone with them. As they were coming down from the mountain, he charged them not to relate what they had seen to anyone, except when the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what rising from the dead meant. The Gospel of the Lord.

R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Call

Five Mystical Songs, IV Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) Text: George Herbert (1593-1632) Setting: Allen Percival

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life; Such a Way, as gives us breath; Such a Truth, as ends all strife; Such a Life, as killeth death. Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength; Such a Light, as shows a Feast; Such a Feast, as mends in length; Such a Strength, as makes his guest. Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart; Such a Joy, as none can move; Such a Love, as none can part; Such a Heart, as joys in love.

cf. 1 John 3:2

Guidelines for the Reception of Communion For Catholics: As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all. For our fellow Christians: We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all be one” (Jn 17:21). Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 § 4). Members of the Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 § 3). For those not receiving Holy Communion: All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another. For non-Christians: We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.

Communion Motet

Z Synem swoim nas pojednaj, Synowi swojemu nas polecaj, swojemu Synowi nas oddawaj. Amen. We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. O, Our Lady, our Advocate, our Mediator, our Comforter. Reconcile us with your Son, give us to your Son. Amen. N.B. Henryk Górecki dedicated this setting of the traditional Latin prayer Sub Tuum Praesidium to the Knights of Columbus in honor of the Order’s establishment in Poland. Górecki was one of Poland’s most revered contemporary composers of classical music and a member of Our Lady of Ludźmierz Council 14001.

FIRST-CLASS RELIC OF ST. JOHN PAUL II On October 5, 2011, at the conclusion of a Mass held in the Divine Mercy Shrine during the 2nd World Apostolic Congress on Mercy in Kraków, Poland, His Eminence Stanisław Cardinal Dziwisz, the Archbishop of Kraków and longtime personal secretary to Pope John Paul II, presented a reliquary containing St. John Paul II’s blood to Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson. This first-class relic was entrusted to the Knights of Columbus to foster devotion at the Order’s Saint John Paul II National Shrine in Washington, D.C. At the center of the reliquary is a glass ampoule that contains the late Holy Father’s blood, which remains in a liquid state. Surrounding the relic is a nimbus shaped like flames, decorated with 12 red stones representing the Twelve Apostles and with rays projecting downward. The design evokes John Paul II’s homily on August 17, 2002, during the Mass dedicating the Divine Mercy Shrine. Citing the Diary of Saint Faustina, he said, “From here there must go forth ‘the spark which will prepare the world for [Jesus’] final coming.’ This spark needs to be lighted by the grace of God. This fire of mercy needs to be passed on to the world.” The late pope’s likeness is depicted just beneath the relic, and at the base of the reliquary in silver is a relief of his coat of arms. The reliquary was crafted by Wiesław Domanski, a member of St. ´ Brother Albert Council 14332 in Lublin, Poland. 47

MARTYRS OF CHRIST THE KING RELIQUARY In 2011, the Knights of Columbus commissioned a reliquary for the first-class relics of 25 saints and 13 blesseds — including six saints and three blesseds who were Knights — martyred during the persecution of the Church in Mexico in the 1920s. The reliquary was first venerated during Pope Benedict XVI’s Mass on Mexico’s Cubilete Hill, also known as the Mountain of Christ the King, on March 25, 2012. Pope Benedict XVI said that the martyrs “in crying out ‘Long live Christ the King and Mary of Guadalupe,’ bore unyielding witness of fidelity to the Gospel and devotion to the Church.” Mexican Knights received permission from the Mexican bishops to display the relics, and Agustin Parra of Guadalajara, Mexico, designed the handcrafted wooden reliquary, which is decorated with gold leaf. At its top stands a statue of Christ the King similar to the one at the shrine on Cubilete Hill. On the exterior of the doors are images of Our Lady of Guadalupe and of Christ’s passion. Inside the reliquary, between Solomonic columns interwoven with palm branches, are the relics of the martyrs canonized in 2000 by St. John Paul II. Inside the doors are the relics of the martyrs beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005. Their names are written in dark red to evoke the blood they shed for their faith. The martyrs’ battle cries of “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” (Long live Christ the King!) and “¡Viva Santa María de Guadalupe!” (Long live Holy Mary of Guadalupe!) are also carved on the interior doors. At the bottom is the phrase “Christus Vincit, Christus Regnat, Christus Imperat” (Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands).

49

CRUCIFORM RELIQUARY OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CANONIZED MEXICAN MARTYRS During his installation as Supreme Knight on February 3, 2001, at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Carl Anderson received a silver reliquary in the shape of a cross containing relics of the six Knights of Columbus priest-martyrs of Mexico. It was at this installation that the Supreme Knight solemnly dedicated his administration and the entire Order to the maternal intercession and protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In September 2005, to mark the centennial of the founding of the Order in Mexico, the Order’s Board of Directors began a pilgrimage of the reliquary in Mexico City. The reliquary traveled throughout Mexico and continued to the United States. The pilgrimage concluded in Orlando, Florida, during the 124th Supreme Convention. A second relic pilgrimage was conducted in 2012 to honor the witness of the Knights of Columbus priest-martyrs and all those who sacrificed their lives for their faith during the time of religious persecution in Mexico. 50

FATHER MICHAEL J. McGIVNEY MEMORIAL CHALICE In 1990, to commemorate the centennial of Father Michael J. McGivney’s death, the Knights of Columbus Board of Directors commissioned a memorial chalice. The chalice was crafted by Giansanti Artistic Jewelers, a prestigious jewelry concern in Rome, Italy. The 18-karat, solid-gold chalice features a node in the form of a globe that depicts the Old and New Worlds, signifying that Christopher Columbus brought the faith from Europe on his voyage of discovery and evangelization in 1492. A medallion at the base of the chalice bears the likeness of Father McGivney. First used at the Memorial Mass during the 108th Supreme Convention in San Antonio, Texas, the McGivney Chalice is used at major Orderwide liturgies. Most notably, the McGivney Chalice was used by St. John Paul II during the Papal Mass co-sponsored by the Order and the Diocese of Brooklyn in 1995. Under the base of the chalice is the emblem of the Order and the inscription: The Knights of Columbus commissioned this chalice to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of its founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, August 14, 1990. 51

Page 24: rosette depicting a pelican feeding its young. The pelican has been an iconographic symbol of the Eucharist since Christian antiquity. In ancient times, it was thought that if a pelican’s young were starving, it would pierce its own flesh to feed and revivify the young with its body and blood.
