“My goal in making clothing is to make people feel good about themselves. I believe that clothing shapes your daily attitude, and I want women to feel empowered and confident. I do not believe that clothes define women, but if a women feels more confident in my clothes, I have succeeded.”

Isabel L. Eldredge

Isabel believes in empowering women and she is doing just that! She has been sewing, monogramming and embroidering for years and as you can see makes sophisticated, ready-to-wear clothes designed for women who work! She is very inspired by Audrey Hepburn and tries to incorporate classic aesthetics into practical, but unique pieces. “Clothes are an outlet to self expression, I can create items that utterly translate my thoughts and feelings, and that is powerful. Whether it is a printed shirt with an empowering quote, or simple, meaningful prints, I am able to voice my opinion without opening my mouth.”

Soul Music for the

When a person thinks of music, one often thinks that it’s something to enjoy and that it’s not that important. However, music is much more than something to enjoy; it is about opening an entire world of creativity. Music is a writing process, one that lets someone express his or her truest emotions and feelings. Music allows a person to share as much or as a little as they want to, which is an amazing thing. Music is beautiful because not only does it allow complete and utter freedom of expression, it is a universal language that many people enjoy. Music is food for the soul; it has the power to completely change someone’s mood or attitude. Think about it -- how many times have you had a bad day? And how many times have you looked forward to just listening to your favorite song to get you out of that bad mood? Whenever you find yourself in a slump, you can always count on blasting your favorite songs to put you in a better mood. However, music does not only need to be used to brighten someone’s day; it is also there for a good cry. Have you ever felt so angry and so sad that listening to sad songs make you have a good cry and then you felt better after? One of the best things about music is that sometimes a song is saying everything you may want it to say, but you just cannot find the words to say it. The power that music holds is truly amazing; not only does it do wonders for the soul, it also brings millions of people together. Think of how many interesting and amazing people you have met from going to concerts and traveling far distances to see your favorite bands. Music is such a wonderful gift to the world, so if you hear a good song, share it anywhere and you can guarantee someone will be so happy you’ve just shown them a new song.

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

Becky Seymour Gatian (SeyMour Photography )

True Blue… By Audra Warren

Did you know that friendships are vital to our overall health and well-being? Researchers have compiled tons of information and done numerous studies on the benefits of relationships. Not just any type of relationship though, good quality friendships. What they have found out is that having a good community of social support is very important to a person’s life expectancy. Some data even suggests that friendships may have even better health benefits than having a spouse. I often read articles on the characteristics of a best friend. Most of these articles break down friendship in a list format. Not only are there thousands of lists surfing the web daily on the topic, there are billions of movies and shows centered on this ever powerful bond between two or more people. Millions of people around the world have become obsessed with shows like Seinfeld, Friends, Will & Grace, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, and so many more. Why do you think this is? The humor of course, but what about the realness of the friendships on these shows? Let’s not forget that the term, ‘My Person,’ was coined not from that of a romantic relationship, but from the beautiful friendship between Cristina Yang and Meredith Grey of Grey’s Anatomy. That’s not to say your significant other cannot be both your romantic partner and your best friend. Ideally, it’s best if they can carry the title of both. This also does not mean that all single people are lonely either. You can be married or live in a house full of roommates, and still feel lonely. Having toxic relationships, and being lonely can both have a negative effect on your health. So what does all this mean to you? And, how do you know if the friendships you have are beneficial to your health or super harmful to your well-being?

How to know if someone is True Blue, or if you need to throw them out like an Old Shoe…

True Friends vs. Toxic Friends True Friends:

Listen Are caring and empathetic Spend time nurturing the relationship Admire you, and are inspired by your good works Respect and value your friendship Tell you the truth in a kind way Give honest advice and opinions when asked Are there in good and bad times Do not judge you Always know how to cheer you up Stand up for you Keep your secrets Call you because they care and miss you Cheer you on, and celebrate your successes Understand your privacy, and are not easily offended when you need time alone

Toxic Friends:

Get jealous of your achievements Compare and compete Judge and criticize Try to occupy all your time and attention Get jealous of your relationships with others Are easily offended when you need time alone Only call when they need something

In case you did not notice, the list of traits of a true friend, is double the list of traits of a toxic friend. This is because true friends contribute so much to your life. If you did not recognize the difference in your friendships before, hopefully these tips will help you to find the tribe that matches your vibe. Happy catching…and releasing!!

Believe in

Yourself Photography by Sarah Demuth

To live a life of high achievement, you must fully believe in yourself and your ability.

Find me an extremely successful person who doesn’t greatly believe in themselves. It’s not going to happen. Steve Jobs, Martin Luther King, Jr., Michael Jordan, Elon Musk and Mark Cuban are just a few highly successful individuals who benefited greatly from this confidence. However, it’s not their levels of success that I want to talk about. It’s their willingness to get up again and again when they failed or experienced a setback while in pursuit of creating the life of their dreams. They were only able to keep going and achieve success because of the level of belief in themselves despite the enormous amount of failures they had experienced for years leading up to their big breakthroughs. Their belief is what created a vision so big that they didn’t care how many times they failed at something. They were eventually going to get to where they wanted to go. Especially as a business owner and entrepreneur, you are most definitely going to fail and experience a loss or setback at some point. If it hasn’t happened already, it eventually will. That's not to be negative or discourage you, that's just life. But when it does happen, and when your belief is strong, no failure or setback will have the power to completely wipe you out. Belief in yourself is the name of the game. Here are two daily habits that can help you increase your belief in yourself and shatter all self-imposed limitations.

Count your wins.

As human beings we naturally have the tendency to get stuck on the negative and think about all of our losses for the day, instead of counting our wins and finding all of the good that took place. Use a gratitude journal to capture all of your wins at the end of each day. This can be the wins from today, last week, last month or even last year. It doesn’t really matter when, but the key is to just get in the habit of capturing all of your wins. This will bring you a complete sense of joy that will let you know that you have done some incredible things in the past and remind you that even bigger things can happen in the future. Whether big or small, it doesn’t matter -- just count your wins!

Talk to yourself like a champion.

Bestselling author Jon Gordon always says, "Talk to yourself more than you listen to yourself." Just for one week, try talking to yourself like a champion instead of listening to yourself as a victim. You will be blown away by the results. It may seem weird to talk to yourself, but give it a try and then see if it's worth the "weirdness”. Thinking positive and empowering thoughts is one thing, but talking to yourself like a champion reconditions your thought process in an instant. When you form the habit of talking to yourself like a champion you don't give the negative and discouraging thoughts the time of day. With power and conviction, repeat phrases such as, “I am the greatest at what I do,” “There is nothing that I can’t do when I fully commit myself,” and “There is nothing ordinary about me. I am a champion.” If you don’t have a huge amount of belief in yourself, then there is no way you can expect anyone else to believe in you. The men and women that change the world all understand the incredible power of belief.

Letters to your

KIDS

She is far more precious than jewels. Proverbs 31:10

You’ll be his first kiss, his first love, his first friend. You are his Momma, and he is your whole world.

He is your little boy.

When you write a letter to your child, it can be magical! It communicates love, pride, and commitment beyond the power of everyday spoken words. It's a fun idea to make writing letters to your kids an annual event, either on their birthdays or around the holidays. To your son or daughter, it will be more than just another family tradition. Each letter is a tangible expression of your love and pride, combined with the hopes and dreams you have for their future. They may even pick one out of a keepsake box in 20 years and be reminded of just how special they are to you. Your letter can offer encouragement through eight simple words that every child should hear:

"Love"

Even if "I love you" is something you say every day, the message is conveyed differently when the words are shared in writing.

"Notice" "Enjoy"

Parents "notice" a lot about their children as they grow, but how often do you actually tell them about it? Share what you've noticed recently about their behavior or maturity. Throughout every stage of their development, there are things you "enjoy" doing with your child. In your letter, describe something special you do together right now.

"Proud"

Be specific when you describe what makes you "proud." This is something we all long to hear, and the words will nourish children when they re-read the letter years from now.

each letter to your child, share a few memories that you "cherish." These moments "Cherish" Inmean a lot to you personally and they may not realize how special that time was to you. probably have a lot of "hope" for your child's future. It's good to let them know about "Hope" You your hopes and dreams for them, but it doesn't have to be anything too big.

"Believe"

It's important that your kids know that you "believe" in them. Share your confidence in your child, as well as the beliefs that continue to motivate you personally.

word "promise" is a little tricky because there are definitely some promises you should "Promise" The never make to your kids. When used appropriately, though, "I promise" statements can convey dedication in a way that's clear and full of meaning.

Postpartum Depression

By Sarah Demuth

Bundle of Joy!

A Love like you have never known. Holding your newborn should be a time filled with awe and wonder. But an amazing time of joy can have a sad devastating twist. Postpartum depression is a silent disease commonly not mentioned when talking about child birth and newborn care. Mothers are often ashamed they are not bursting with joy, but rather with tears and loneliness. This disorder affects one in seven mothers. Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, fatigue, anxiety, rage, fear and being overwhelmed; haunt some new mothers. It presents most frequently between two to four weeks after giving birth. The task of caring for a new baby, hormonal changes, lack of sleep and changes in daily routine contribute to this mood disorder. Mothers often try to hide these feelings. They tend to isolate themselves and hide symptoms from family, spouse and friends. The feelings are intense and can lead to harm to the mother and/or baby if ignored or untreated. It is important for all new mothers to get support, eat regular meals, get sleep when the baby rests and exercise. A Mother needs breaks from the demands of newborn care, home care and other child care. If there is a history of depression or mood disorders in close family members this increases the chance of PPD. Treatment can include counseling, medications, more support from love ones and at times admission to a hospital is necessary to allow healing. With treatment it can fully resolve and Restore the joy of a new child. If you notice a friend or family member struggling after giving birth, sit and talk with her, offer support, listen and assist with child and family care but most importantly get medical treatment. If you feel she or the baby is in danger immediatly call 911. For more information you can also visit the National Institute of Mental Health www.nimh.nih.gov.

Plan your Future As we grow older we soon learn what subjects and hobbies we enjoy and find the ones we really love, we can then shape our futures accordingly. If you are ready to plan for a successful future then here are a few suggestions to help you on your way: Go to a quiet place, a place where you can think for as long as you want without being interrupted. Use your time here to visualise what you want your future to be like. Think about what you are good at, what you enjoy doing and what you are passionate about. Imagine an activity you would be happy to do every day, even if you weren’t getting paid to do it. Write down your goals, a list of achievements or things you want to do. Start your future. Start working towards your goals today, there is no time like the present. Speak with confidence about your future goals and ambitions. People may doubt the likelihood of you achieving the future you envision, but with a little hard work and lots of perseverance you can have the future you’ve always dreamed of. Lots of people have no idea what they want to do when they’re 12 and still don’t know what they want to do when they turn 25, and for a few it takes a lot longer. As long as what you are doing right now makes you happy then you’re on the right path.

What Is Domestic Violence? Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence (IPV), domestic abuse or relationship abuse) is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship. Domestic violence does not discriminate. Anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender can be a victim – or perpetrator – of domestic violence. It can happen to people who are married, living together or who are dating. It affects people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and education levels. Domestic violence includes behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish or force them to behave in ways they do not want. It includes the use of physical and sexual violence, threats and intimidation, emotional abuse and economic deprivation. Many of these different forms of domestic violence/abuse can be occurring at any one time within the same intimate relationship.

Warning Signs of Domestic Violence

It’s not always easy to tell at the beginning of a relationship if it will become abusive. In fact, many abusive partners may seem absolutely perfect in the early stages of a relationship. Possessive and controlling behaviors don’t always appear overnight, but rather emerge and intensify as the relationship grows. Domestic violence doesn’t look the same in every relationship because every relationship is different. One thing most abusive relationships have in common is that the abusive partner does many different kinds of things to have more power and control over their partner.

Some of the signs of an abusive relationship include a partner who: Tells you that you can never do anything right Shows extreme jealousy of your friends and time spent away Keeps you or discourages you from seeing friends or family members Insults, demeans or shames you with put-downs Controls every penny spent in the household Takes your money or refuses to give you money for necessary expenses Looks at you or acts in ways that scare you Controls who you see, where you go, or what you do Prevents you from making your own decisions Tells you that you are a bad parent or threatens to harm or take away your children Prevents you from working or attending school Destroys your property or threatens to hurt or kill your pets Intimidates you with guns, knives or other weapons Pressures you to have sex or do things sexually you’re not comfortable with Pressures you to use drugs or alcohol

Experiencing even one or two of these behaviors in a relationship is a red flag that abuse may be present. Remember, each type of abuse is serious, and no one deserves to experience abuse of any kind, for any reason. If you have concerns about what’s happening in your relationship, contact Penelope House. They are there to listen and support you!

BLOOD CANCERS Blood cancers affect the production and function of your blood cells. Most of these cancers start in your bone marrow where blood is produced. Stem cells in your bone marrow mature and develop into three types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets. In most blood cancers, the normal blood cell development process is interrupted by uncontrolled growth of an abnormal type of blood cell. These abnormal blood cells, or cancerous cells, prevent your blood from performing many of its functions, like fighting off infections or preventing serious bleeding. There are three main types of blood cancers: Leukemia, a type of cancer found in your blood and bone marrow, is caused by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells. The high number of abnormal white blood cells are not able to fight infection, and they impair the ability of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells and platelets. Lymphoma is a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system, which removes excess fluids from your body and produces immune cells. Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell that fight infection. Abnormal lymphocytes become lymphoma cells, which multiply and collect in your lymph nodes and other tissues. Over time, these cancerous cells impair your immune system. Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells. Plasma cells are white blood cells that produce disease- and infection-fighting antibodies in your body. Myeloma cells prevent the normal production of antibodies, leaving your body's immune system weakened and susceptible to infection. What can you do to help? You can help blood cancer patients and family by donating blood if you are able to any chance you get. You can also donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The money that is donated is used to find a cure and to help families in need. www.hematology.org

Habits of a

Stylish Man

When being stylish is something you do effortlessly, it means you’ve reached a level of mastery. No man is born stylish. As with anything it is something you become.Check out some of the habits stylish men adhere to.

They’re confident in what they wear.

He knows who he is, how he dresses and is confident in whatever he wears.

Everything he wears fits.

Fit is the number one fundamental to good style. No piece of ill clothing, no matter what you spend on it will make you look as good as a well fitted item of clothing.

He knows less is more.

There’s nothing beneficial about a wardrobe filled with 100’s of garments. He knows the importance of simplicity, never overdoing it with colour combinations, accessories and layering.

They’re not afraid to spend money on quality.

Following a timeless style, they are not afraid to invest in quality garments.

They’re not obsessed with brands.

You will never see a stylish man head to toe in one brand, especially a brand that masses know about. There is no Armani logos on every polo they wear and there’s no bold slogans or branding.

He has a wardrobe built around his lifestyle.

They define their style and they build their wardrobe around it. They know how to live and feel good in every occasion.

His wardrobe is organized.

A stylish man is organized and everything has its place keeping in mind that less is more. Clutter is not seen in a stylish man’s closet.

They don’t brag about how good they look. There is no room for arrogance.

They don’t plan ahead.

They are so confident in their wardrobe that they know they can pull together the perfect pieces in any situation without warning.

They know their hair stylist.

It may take them months or years to find the perfect stylist and when they do they find it hard to get a haircut elsewhere. www.mensfashionmagazine.com

“If no one ever argues, you’re not likely to give up on old ways of doing things, let alone try new ones. Disagreement is the antidote to groupthink. Lets Talk about it...

Everyone wants to be heard, from kids, to grown-ups, to long-lost relatives across the holiday table. But too often, we steer clear of the issues we really care about, hovering instead on weather patterns and sports news. These days, even those issues can feel risky. Every topic worth discussing carries the risk of conflict, and we, as a society, seem to be losing our knack for disagreement. Facing disagreements with heart and curiosity is a crucial skill to teach our children and ourselves. Thoughtful, back-and-forth conversations are more than just an exchange of ideas. Conversations about issues that matter can actually strengthen our relationships, as we gain understanding and insight into the beliefs of others. They give us new perspectives on which to base future decisions. They give us an opportunity to learn from and with those around us. Here are seven conversation skills your family and friends can begin practicing right now. 1. Begin with respect. Every civil conversation must begin in a place of mutual respect. Establish this directly before beginning a potentially divisive discussion. As in, “I already respect you as a parent, friend, student, teacher, etc.” If you can’t find any respectful common ground, don’t begin the conversation. 2. Speak from the heart. Steer your conversation toward personal experience, rather than learned talking points. If you are passionate about something, it’s likely you have (or know someone who has) a personal story about it. Sharing this story gives the other person insight into why you think the way you do. Be sure to ask the other person why they feel the way they do.

3. Listen to understand. Understanding must be the number one goal when starting up a meaningful conversation about an important topic. Too often we think we know where someone is going with their ideas, and we stop listening. Communicating through interruptions and half thoughts stunts the conversation. Even worse, it changes the way you see each other, transforming a thoughtful dialogue into an adversarial battle. Popular media and combative news programs reinforce this tendency, role modeling volume and aggression in conversations rather than respect and curiosity. 5. Don’t be afraid to disagree. Yes, it’s important to curb our impulse to interrupt. For some of us, it’s just as important to get over the temptation to agree for the sake of getting along. If instead we practice standing up for our beliefs, we will get much closer to our goal of shared understanding. And if we practice this skill in everyday conversation, we will be more prepared be an “upstander” in the face of injustice. 6. Practice conversational empathy. When discussing big ideas, empathy plays a key role in understanding one another. You’ve already established a foundation of respect. Now give those you are talking to the benefit of the doubt. Assume they are being honest. Assume they have good intentions. Be curious enough to ask questions that will help you understand the issue from their point of view, especially if you disagree completely. 7. Be a role model. Resist the urge to shoo kids out of the room during earnest conversations. They just might learn something! Practice your own communication skills and put them into action around your kids. Some tricks of the trade, like knowing how to conclude in a moment of understanding or knowing how to abandon an unproductive or overly aggressive conversation are more easily demonstrated than taught. Let’s make time to talk about issues that matter. Discover more tips and loads of anecdotes in Celeste Headlee’s book We Need To Talk: How to Have Conversations that Matter. Or watch her famous TED Talk, 10 Ways to Have a Better Conversation. Let’s practice conversation skills that help us understand one another better. Let’s disagree with respect, empathy, and curiosity. Let’s practice these skills with our families and then carry them out into the world with us, building connections, bridges and understanding as we go through our days. Our society – and our children – will be stronger for it.

Obstacles are present in everyday life, be it a barrier that sets you back, halts your progress or derails your best laid plans. They are discouraging and cause loss of precious time and resources. Appreciate that obstacles serve a role other than cause emotional distress. To contest reality will not earn you support since life always prevails. Leaning in to your challenges however, helps you move through the obstacle rather than allow it to dominate your life. By leaning in to your challenges, you embrace life through your non-resistance. The obstacle reveals vital lessons to identify its significance. The following points will help you overcome obstacles and reclaim your power. Sometimes when we’re knocked around by life, it can weaken our self-esteem, so it’s important to stand in your own power. Be willing to leave behind pursuits that do not deliver results.

1. Distance Yourself From The Drama

When faced with an obstacle, emotions run high since you’re likely to react to the ensuing drama. Step back from the chaos and see the obstacle from a greater perspective.

2. Seek Out Necessary Resources

Often you may lack provisions, finances, strategies or a key piece of knowledge to conquer your obstacle. The key is to acknowledge that it is ‘resource related’. Consult those who can help you overcome the hurdle. As they say, enlist a fresh pair of eyes to see what you may be missing.

3. Gain Perspective

It can overwhelm you when an unforeseen obstacle emerges. To get caught up in the ensuing crisis redirects vital resources to make critical decisions. Gaining perspective helps you step away from the ‘noise’. You might seek help from others, talk to friends or loved ones who can offer a different assessment of your challenge.

4. Evaluate The Obstacle

Can something be done to overcome the obstacle now or does it require expert help? Consider it objectively as though you were seeing it for the first time. Use logic and sound judgement to avoid becoming emotionally enslaved to the task.

5. Stay Focused And Committed

Often an obstacle is not intended to weaken your actions. It is an invitation to get clear on the process to advance to the next stage. It is advising you to attend to a particular aspect now instead of the future when you have invested valuable time and energy. You might recall Thomas Edison’s well-known passage of 1,000 ways that did not work to invent the light bulb. Be unrelenting in your commitment — do not give up. Don’t allow setbacks to get you down since you are bound to fall upon many setbacks in life. Obstacles help enrich your mental experience in so far as building resilience, fortitude and strength. Every time you tackle a problem, you overcome a mental hurdle.

6. Develop A Growth Mindset

A Growth mindset is aspiring toward continuous improvement and building on your successes. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.”

I can honestly say, in the hustle and bustle of modern life, women have lost the art of glamour. I think the very word glamour strikes fear into the hearts of many women today. It evokes the vision of an exotic unattainable goal. Frankly, I feel the same way when I hear women discuss cleaning their baseboard; but, I digress. We are here to talk about style. I know for a fact that many of my female friends are afraid to embrace changes in the way they dress because they do not feel they are at their perceived physical ideal. They feel they must lose weight before beginning the journey into changing their look. Nothing could be further from the truth, I am a firm believer in the motto start where you are! There really is no time like the present to take that first step to self improvement and self expression. Fashion is at its very root the greatest form of personal self expression. To quote the stylist Rachel Zoe, "style is saying who you are without having to speak". Start with a glass of wine and latest issue of vogue. What styles speak to your inner diva? What can you wear at your current size? I think the biggest mistake full figured woman make is hiding those gorgeous curves under shapeless tunic tops or A-line dresses. There are no limits to being fabulous at your current size and shape, except the ones you

Shape wear! I am a fanatic when it comes to shape wear. Don't let those shapely women of Madmen fool you, girls, they are wearing girdles and bullet bras. Most women do not have an hour glass figure, but you can create the illusion with proper undergarments. Frankly, it's all smoke and mirrors, and what's wrong with that? Choose items that lift the bust, cinch in the waist and smooth the tummy. There is no need to spend a fortune on these items. I love, love vintage undergarments. I pick up every girdle, bra, waist cincher and body shaper I can find at estate sales for just a few dollars an item. Being small busted, I love padded bras! Sorry, boys but it's all an illusion. My favorite bra is a $10 vasserette bra found at Wal-Mart. I personally like the bullet bra look and this bra does the trick. The point is there is nothing wrong with faking it till you make it. Worried about comfort? I assure you properly fitted foundation garments are not uncomfortable and when you see a more sleek silhouette in the mirror, you might just decide it's a fair tradeoff. It seems to me that most middle aged women are afraid to take risks, they are afraid to stand out. It's so much easier to blend in with the background. I attend social functions and have complete strangers complement me on my outfit and hair. I have people stop me and ask if they can take my picture. What an honor! I have had women stop me to say they love my instagram but could never look like me. Of course you can't look like me and why on earth would you want to when you can look like YOU! I'm sure your next thought is, this all sounds great but how do you pay for a new wardrobe! You thrift it! Our lovely country is extremely wealthy and used clothes go for next to nothing. If you hate shopping, thrifting may not be for you. I consider thrifting my cardio, I love the thrill of finding truly unique wardrobe pieces for just a few dollars. Now, let's discuss the true goal of thrifting. The goal is to find high end designer pieces that are unique for a fraction of the cost of new. For instance, I have both Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci shoes for which I paid just $8 a pair. I call that a deal! Why vintage? Because clothes were better made and better tailored 20 years ago and a classic never goes out of style. I said it in my first article and I stand by my words; beauty is a luxury of birth but style can be learned. Great style gives the illusion of great beauty. In the words, of Coco Chanel, "dress shabbily and they remember the dress, dress impeccably and they remember the woman. My personal style revolves around vintage fashion especially 1940s and 1950s and this article reflects that, however, the basic rules remain the same for which ever style your chose to inspire you.
