DOING THIS month’s feature

was very timely as we had a new member added to our Everything Knoxville team. Arya Grace Menendez made her appearance on July 26th weighing in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces. She is the daughter of our editor, Kendra, and the first child for her and her husband Mark. The photos they shared with us are precious, and Arya Grace is just perfect. As Kendra was working with our feature article on Tennova Women’s Services, she was briefly taken back to the day Arya arrived, and I’m sure she experienced some of what Allison related on the birth of Lochlyn. I’d like Kendra to add her thoughts as only a mom can. “Being a new mom is an experience like no other. Nothing can compare to holding your little bundle of joy in your arms for the first time and waking up each day knowing 4

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2014

you’re the parent of a beautiful, perfect daughter. Arya is such a blessing to our family, and Mark and I look forward to the many years of joy she’s going to bring us. We have had tremendous support from family and friends, and we’d like to thank everyone for all their well wishes as we embark on this wonderful journey of parenthood.” ~ Kendra Menendez So if you are a new or current parent or just looking for the best in women’s health services, then consider visiting Tennova and check out their vast array of services. And to all new moms and moms-to-be, we wish you the best on embarking on your own journey into parenthood.

Great

Expectations At Tennova Healthcare,

we believe in love at first sight.

P

We see it every day.

REGNANCY, CHILDBIRTH, AND PARENTING are among

the most special moments in life. At Tennova Healthcare, we want to make this a time you’ll remember w it h joy. T hat ’s why we’ve designed our childbirth centers at Turkey Creek Medical Center, Physicians Regional Medical Center, and Newport Medical Center to offer the comforts of home and the reassurance that – should the need arise – a full range of healthcare services is available close by. “Being pregnant or planning to have a baby is a good reason to want the very best,” said Lance Jones, CEO of Turkey Creek Medical Center. “At Tennova, you’ll be cared for by a team of skilled, supportive doctors and nurses who are committed to providing you with information, attention, and support throughout each stage of your pregnancy, labor and delivery, and beyond.” Si nce not ever yone ha s t he sa me expectations, Tennova offers a wide range of options for the birth of your baby, including rooming in, midwifer y ser vices, a nd specialized care for high risk births. Allison Peek (31) was excited to learn she was pregnant. Allison and her husband, Douglas (36), were also concerned about the delivery because Allison was considered “high risk.” During her pregnancy, she was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, preecla mpsia ( high blood pressure), hyperemesis (severe nausea leading to dehydration and weight loss), a low platelet 6

count, and a heart murmur. The Sequoyah Hills couple, who both work in the medical sales field, knew they wanted the best care possible for their baby. “Having a high risk pregnancy and going into labor early was a frightening experience,” said Allison. “My obstetrician, Dr. Michael Fields, and the team at Turkey Creek Medical Center were extremely reassuring. They worked in collaboration with the high risk doctors to ensure that both my baby and I stayed healthy before delivery.”

THE BIG DAY ARRIVES

Allison delivered a healthy baby girl, who they named Lochlyn, in November. Although she delivered the baby early (at 36 weeks), Allison reports there were no complications or the need for specialized neonatal care for Lochlyn, who weighed six pounds and three ounces at birth. “It’s hard to describe the gratitude I have for this amazing team of doctors and nurses,” said Allison. “From my prenatal to postpartum care, I felt like the team was constantly cheering me on.” “Our experience was remarkable from the very start,” added Douglas. “We felt like ‘family’ from the first time we walked into the hospital. Being new, expectant parents can be an overwhelming experience. But the staff made every effort to reassure us, comfort us, and care for all of our needs.” Tennova offers private labor and delivery suites at its three childbirth centers. They look and feel like home, with comfortable

furnishings and warm touches throughout. Each suite includes sophisticated monitoring equipment, and, should you require a C-section delivery, we can handle that in our special operating rooms. Our top priority is always the health and safety of our patients. “As Douglas and I enjoyed our first few nights together with Lochlyn at the hospital, we were amazed at just how comfortable we were,” said Allison. “We felt almost as if we were at home.”

FAMILIES MATTER

At Tennova, fathers are welcome at all times and may stay overnight in the birthing suite. “ The labor a nd deliver y suite wa s comfortable and accommodating for my husband and sister, who joined me for the delivery,” said Allison. “We had plenty of room for all our family who wanted to visit our new addition.” “Anybody who knows me knows I am not often left without words, but I was definitely taken aback at just how smooth our experience proved to be,” said Douglas. “I really appreciate all of the care and consideration the staff gave us, including the occasional downtime in order to rest up.” Bonding – the emotional attachment that occurs between two people – is promoted at Tennova’s childbirth centers. Immediately after delivery, parents are encouraged to touch and talk to their baby. With rooming in, your baby can stay with you as much as you wish. “It was important to me to have my baby Photo by D. Roberts Photography

Navigating Alzheimer’s, Dementia, or Memory Loss

W

H I L E YO U M AY

have only been impacted indirectly, sooner or later, Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, will strike your family. Although there seems to be greater awareness today of dementia and memory loss, which affects an estimated 5.1 million Americans, most of us know very little about this debilitating and progressive disease that eventually leads to death in its victims. But what is oftentimes worse is the negative impact this disease can have on family members who are often faced with becoming caregivers for their loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s. Totally unprepared, they frequently make decisions that can have long-term consequences on both themselves and the patient, without fully recognizing the significance or potential negative consequences of their well-meaning decisions. But it is also not easy to know who to turn to for assistance when you’re confronted with the reality of the dreaded disease. Decisions related to medical and psychiatric care coordination, insurance filings, legal and financial advice, care center placement, and home health services are just a few of the essential issues you will have to address. 12

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2014

Knowledge is power, which is why I have assembled a group of knowledgeable, experienced, and compassionate caregivers who can help guide you through the many decisions that will be required as you prepare to help a loved one with this disease. But as important as knowledge is, timing is also critical. Early diagnosis, treatment, and well-coordinated planning can result in far less stress for both the patient, designated caregivers, and family members, assuring that your loved one receives the optimum treatment and care. At the Center for Memory Management, I have combined my 26 years of experience as a nurse and nurse practitioner and more than 10 years of psychiatric private practice experience with the vast resources of Elder Advocates founder and president, Carolyn Neil. Carolyn’s 28 years of experience as a Registered Nurse and Licensed Nursing Home Administrator, as well as her other licenses, certificates, memberships, and community activities, has provided her with the necessary expertise needed to provide family members and caregivers with the expert guidance, planning, services, and care navigation required to meet the needs of an Alzheimer’s patient or an elderly loved one in need of care. We are also pleased to announce the newest

member of our team, Kristi Osborne, who has her master’s degree in nursing and is now board certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. If a family member or loved one has been diagnosed with dementia, or at the first sign that they may be exhibiting any of the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s, I encourage you to contact us here at the Center for Memory Management. Our team can provide you with all the necessary resources, support, and guidance, including: » Screening and evaluation » Lab testing » Physician and Psychiatric care » Medication management » Insurance approvals » Legal and financial advice » Nursing home or facility admission » Home health services and hospice At the Center, we will provide you with the comprehensive approach needed when dealing with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other memory loss conditions. who were Tennessee farmers, I’ve had a lifelong interest not only in farming but in raising beef cattle as well. I love the farm, and I particularly enjoy the more natural approach to farming and ranching. I believe that crops and beef raised for human consumption should be raised as nature intended. This all-natural approach not only enhances the taste of food, but it’s also healthier and safer. That’s why I launched a new retail shop in Farragut called Mother Earth Meats. Mother Earth Meats features premium quality, all-natural, and grass-fed meats. Our Tennessee farmers only use production methods based on natural sciences. There are no shortcuts taken. Our beef is grass-fed, and our chicken is free-range. Our animals are not given antibiotics, arsenic, or hormones. Simply put, you’ll enjoy the superior tastes as nature intended. In addition to featuring quality meats and chicken, we also offer our customers a wide variety of grocery items, including local grits, cornmeal, pasture raised eggs, and produce, designed to enhance fresh meat and chicken and which are guaranteed to please even the most discriminating gourmet at your dining table. We also carry a variety of Amish and Native American dry goods. But Mother Earth Meats is even more than a meat and chicken counter and grocery. It’s also a restaurant featuring appetizers, salads, soups, sandwiches, and burgers. But not just any burger. Try our grass-fed beef burger, bison burger, fresh turkey burger, or one of our elk, venison, or lamb burgers. We also offer free-range pork sausage and our very own Chef Joe’s infamous wings. How about topping that off with our extensive collection of draft beers offered at our Beer Barn? Our restaurant also offers catering services. From all-natural meats, chickens, and produce, to exotic meats, including alligator sausage, kangaroo, antelope, caribou, venison, elk, and bison, to our dry goods, to our restaurant, Mother Earth Meats offers you a healthier and faster alternative to the big box food stores or neighborhood restaurant while supporting Tennessee’s small agricultural business community. Store hours are 10 am to 7 pm Monday through Saturday and 11 am to 7 pm Sunday. Restaurant hours are 11 am to 6:40 pm every day.

Medicare Enrollment Options for 2014-15 A summary of what you need to know Presented by Ali Swofford

Key Medicare enrollment periods are approaching. There are three periods in which Medicare beneficiaries can either enroll or dis-enroll in forms of coverage. » OCT. 15-DEC. 7: Open enrollment

period. This is when you can exit Original Medicare (Parts A & B) for a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) and change your prescription drug coverage (Part D). You can also get out of a Part C plan and go back to Parts A and B during this period.1 » DEC. 8: Annual enrollment period begins for 5-star plans. Part C and Part D plans are assigned ratings. Beginning December 8, 2014, and ending November 30, 2015, a window opens for you to enroll in a 5-star Part C or Part D plan. Visit www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan for 5-star plan information.2 » JAN. 1-FEB. 14, 2015: Dis-enrollment period. Should you join a Part C plan in late 2014 and subsequently want to reverse that decision, you can dis-enroll from that Part C plan within this window of time and go back to Original Medicare (Parts A & B) with a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan (Part D).1

What should you look for in a Part C or Part D plan?

» While premiums matter, overall plan expenses ultimately matter most; scrutinize the co-pays, the co-insurance, and the yearly deductibles as well. » How inclusive is the plan network? Assuming the plan has one, does it include the hospitals you would choose and your current physicians? » Regarding Part D, how wide-ranging is the prescription drug coverage? Look at the list of approved drugs (the formulary). » Every fall, Medicare plans mail out Annual Notice of Change letters to plan members. Use this notice to determine if your current plan is still right for you.3 You can ask situation specific questions at the FREE education dinner workshop on September 25th entitled “How to Get Rollover Ready 401(k) and IRA Essentials for Retirement.” To register, call 865-690-0049.

What Are You Thinking? SEPTEMBER HAS ARRIVED, and the mantra of the

day is back to school. Traditionally fall is the time of year when young and old return from the labor of the fields or the leisure of the lake to learn, theorize, philosophize, or discover. How and what we think is largely the result of our entire life experience, but our daily intake of sights, sounds, and even food has a great influence as well. Food can affect our focus, moods, opinions, reactions, and decision making. It has been said that if you want to see your tomorrow, look at your dinner plate today. Glucose is the primary fuel for the brain and nervous system. When blood sugar levels get too low, we lose focus or get sleepy. Simple sugars found in soft drinks, candy, and even fruit causes the blood sugar level to rise sharply, which can result in an exaggerated state of excitement and a corresponding difficulty in the ability to focus. When the pancreas injects insulin into the blood stream to reduce the sugar levels, thereby resulting in below normal levels, we tend to get sleepy or unaware, especially in mid afternoon. By contrast, complex carbohydrates found in grains, beans, and vegetables provide a steady supply of brain fuel that remains relatively constant and thereby enhances our ability to think, learn, and understand. Replacing simple sugars with complex carbohydrates is the single most important measure we can take to enhance our thinking. Beyond proper glucose levels, there are certain foods and nutrients that will enhance nervous system function and therefore our thinking ability. Dark leafy greens, sea vegetables, egg yolks, raisins, and beans such as lentils, chickpeas, and soy beans are rich in iron. Iron carries oxygen to the brain and thereby enhances mental acuity. Grains, legumes, and fish are high in omega 3 oils that help regulate neurotransmitters. Seeds and nuts such as flax, sesame, almonds, and walnuts are good sources of vitamin E, which is thought to inhibit cognitive decline as we age. It’s important to note that supporting your brain function is not just about passing a test in school or achieving optimal job performance. It can affect our decision making in every aspect of our lives, including those involving personal relationships or the avoidance of accidents. The lifelong consequences can be profound. What makes you think the way you do? It’s something to think about. Note: Consult your healthcare professional before making any dietary changes. These articles and recipes are not intended to diagnose or treat any illness.

Tour de Tellico – A Beautiful Experience OME EARLY FALL,

bicyclist enthusiasts from near and far will come together to ride the beautiful back roads of East Tennessee. Peddling through the most scenic vistas of Loudon, Monroe, and McMinn counties, bikers will be exhilarated not only from the ride but from the beauty of the views. Whether it’s for the challenge or just the bragging rights, cyclists are in for a day of fun and biking camaraderie. Scheduled for Saturday, September 27, the ninth annual Tour de Tellico will once again be hosted by the Tellico Lake Rotary Club. The event begins early at the First Baptist Church of Tellico Lake with the long rides starting at 8 am. The Rotary Club provides water and snacks for the riders at several rest stops, as well as a light lunch at the end of the ride. 25k Ride Added for Casual Bikers This year’s Tour de Tellico offers four rides for all levels of cyclists. Jim Wiese, Tour de Tellico chairman, commented about the newest 25k ride. “We added the 25k event so casual bikers could be part of Tour de Tellico - just a little over 15 miles,” he said. “This opens our Tour 24

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2014

de Tellico to many additional cyclists from Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, and surrounding lake communities who can comfortably participate in the charity ride. It’s important to realize this is not a race, just an enjoyable ride to challenge your personal best, have some fun, and raise money for worthy local charities.” The other rides are the 50k route covering about 31 miles, the 100k trek which is about 62 miles, and of course the challenging Century 100-mile event. “Experienced long distance riders enjoy the Century Ride, and it takes them four to six hours to complete,” said Jim. “Many of these cyclists travel from neighboring states to participate in our well-run event. In prior years, we had bikers from as far away as Colorado and Texas.” Charities Receive All the Proceeds “Last year we were able to make significant donations to the Loudon County Boys & Girls Club, Good Shepherd Center, Monroe County

Imagination Library, Good Samaritan Center of Loudon County, and other Rotary charities,” said Sue Everson, the current Rotary Club president. “Our goal is to top last year’s Tour de Tellico proceeds so we can provide more assistance to local people in need. We’re reaching out to many potential sponsors and hope we can secure greater involvement from the cycling community. We would love to have 250 to 300 bicyclists participate this year.” Like Us on Facebook The routes have been carefully checked for the bikers’ safety, personally traveled and mapped out on the Internet. The Tour de Tellico website has been updated and is ready to accept online registrations. Bicyclists of all levels can find more information and register online at www.TourdeTellico.com. Cyclists may also “like” us on our Tour de Tellico Facebook page. The Tellico Lake Rotary Club provides service to the community, networks with other organizations, promotes high ethical standards, advances goodwill and peace through fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders, all while members enjoy friendship, fellowship, and fun.

Is Shopping Really Therapeutic? E HAVE ALL HEARD

the saying that “when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping,” and a lot has been written and studied about the benefits of shopping by both researchers and therapists. It can be an escape mode, it can provide entertainment or needed social connection, and it can also allow a mini mental vacation. Shopping can also be a genuine stress relief or a needed pick-me-up when you are down. It’s similar to the sugar rush we all get from digging into a decadent piece of chocolate. In fact, in a study conducted by a Penn State researcher a few years ago, the survey indicated that 82% of shoppers polled actually felt better after making a purchase to boost their morale, and buyers’ remorse was practically negligible. However, indulgence can be a slippery slope. To relish the benefits, you must avoid the negative consequences, such as buying beyond your means or buying compulsively when you have neither the space nor the use

for the purchase. If you have to validate the purchase to someone else, you might also reconsider the decision to buy. Shopping can be great personal therapy, so please consider consignment shopping as a way to diffuse the negative consequences and the guilt. Here you will find current fashions and designer classics at tremendously reduced prices. Consignment shopping offers manageable doses of mood lifting to soothe your soul. At Next To New, we believe in the positive aspects of retail therapy. We have a beautifully appointed store, an experienced staff, the best brands, and the most up-to-date merchandise selection in Knoxville at the very best prices, and we are just waiting to make your day brighter. Claudia Rawn

CLAUDIA RAWN has always known she

wanted to put her talents in math and science to work in her career. Now, that drive has paid off – she’s been named a 2014 Fellow of ASM International the Materials Information Society, one of the highest attainable honors in her field. “It is great to be recognized for my work to the society and my research,” said Claudia, an associate professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. “Many of my colleagues in the Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) Department are FASM or fellows of other professional societies, so it is great to join them in having this honor and distinction.” Claudia has been part of the UTK family for several years, starting in 2002 as a joint faculty member between UTK and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. She’s been at UTK

I love being around creative people, and in our field, we celebrate each others’ ideas and make them better by adding to the pool of scientific understanding.” full-time since the beginning of this year. “In high school, I loved math and science and excelled in them,” said Claudia. “I grew up in southwestern Virginia, about one-anda-half hours from Virginia Tech, so it was an easy decision to go to Virginia Tech and major in engineering. I was not sure which engineering discipline I wanted to major in, but my sophomore year I took Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering, taught by Mac Louthan. He was a phenomenal teacher, and the course had the right balance of math, chemistry, and physics for me.” After earning her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech, Claudia went on to earn her master’s degree in chemistry from George Mason University, then her Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from the University of Arizona. “My days are always different,” she

said. “During the academic year, teaching comes into play, and I spend one-on-one time with my graduate students talking about their research. There are also tasks to keep things running smoothly, as well as making presentations and writing manuscripts on my own research and writing proposals to keep the students funded and the research going.” Like many researchers, Claudia feels limited by time. “It is a great job!” she said. “I love being around creative people, and in our field, we celebrate each others’ ideas and make them better by adding to the pool of scientific understanding. It is in general very intellectually challenging and fulfilling. It thrills me to help a student understand a complex idea, and then I know my field is going to continue to improve. Some students are incredibly creative and thoughtful and just a pleasure to get to know.” September 2014 EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE

many opportunities that we as Americans enjoy that simply aren’t available anywhere else. One I enjoy the most is the opportunity to pursue the American dream of owning my own business – a business with challenges that need to be managed, but a business of unequalled potential as well. The opportunity to provide a higher standard of living for our family and for the families of our associates, all while providing high-quality products that everyone can enjoy. But it’s been an American dream on another level as well – the dream of sharing our family and our story. My husband’s, Scott’s, memories of his grandmother’s kitchen on a farm in Missouri and my own memories of my grandmother’s homemade desserts on nanny’s back porch in Memphis. Our creation, Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, with locations in Turkey Creek and Bearden, are a tribute to our grandparents and to your fondest memories of your grandparents and your childhood memories as well. So just what does Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop offer? Well, just about the best homemade pies and biscuits right from our very own grandmothers’ recipes that would make them proud and will have you traveling back in time to your experiences as a child on your grandmother’s porch on a lazy, summer Sunday afternoon. But Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop offers even more than nostalgia. We also offer, through our franchising opportunities, the opportunity for you and your family to create a future of fond memories with your very own Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop franchise – an opportunity to be in business for yourself but not by yourself. An opportunity to take advantage of a turn-key business that provides you with everything you’ll need to know to own, operate, and succeed with your very own Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, and probably with a total investment below what you might expect to invest on your own. We offer you a proven recipe for success that will help you create your very own American dream for you and your family and your future. A dream as American as apple pie. To learn more, I invite you to call me personally, and discover how you can build your own dream for the future that would make all of our grandmothers proud.

This time the layering begins… whether you choose cotton gauze in new fall colors, chunky sweaters with your jeans, or fabulous new tunics with leggings – The Lily Pad’s ready for you! For many years, the two things we’ve heard most requested from you, our customers, are a ladies’ shoe store and men’s clothing. Mary and Dave Miller are moving to Sweetwater to open their third shoe store; they also have stores in Charlotte, NC, and Bar Harbor, Maine. So this lady knows her shoes, and what a perfect companion to The Lily Pad’s fashions! Not only will we have a shoe store, but joining The Lily Pad and Sweet Soles is Renee Fisher, who has been in the cosmetics industry for 25 years. Arts & Culture Alliance Presents “America Divided” by Antuco Chicaiza HE ARTS & CULTURE

Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of photography entitled “America Divided” by Antuco Chicaiza of Sweetwater. The work in “America Divided” is meant to create a dialog about the division that government and society has created in America today. Several pieces only show a rectangle with eyes on a white canvas. “The rectangle not only shows the part of a person on which we usually focus, but it is also means to represent the hyphen that separates us as a nation,” said Antuco. The exhibition will be displayed in the Balcony gallery of the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from September 5-27. A public reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on Friday, September 5, from 5 to 9 pm. The First Friday reception also features a Jazz Jam Session hosted by Vance Thompson and Friends from 7 to 9 pm in the Black Box Theatre. Antuco Chicaiza lived in Ecuador from age four until 12 in a small mountain town, immersed in traditional culture, as well as exposed to the mistreatment of Indians.

A formative experience while there also included visiting the studio of Oswaldo Guayasamin, a leading Ecuadoran artist, and viewing his paintings and collection of Latin American art. Antuco went on to study at the International Fine Arts College in Miami. He has lived in Sweetwater, Tennessee, since 1999. Antuco’s early charcoal drawings and paintings drew upon his childhood memories of the lives of Indians in Ecuador. These works were representational in style and emphasized both social injustice and the peoples’ strength and pride. In 2003, Antuco’s work shifted to a more experimental approach, which focused on his sketch books full of thoughts, original and found images, and documents of travels. Antuco’s more recent paintings utilize phrases, symbols, graffiti, and abstracted figures and faces, combining them in dense, interpenetrating compositions. Antuco’s subjects include the challenges and rewards of family, cultural heritage, and social and political issues. Antuco has shown his work in solo exhibitions at Casa HoLa in Knoxville, the Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville, The Rose

Center in Morristown, The Nashville International Airport, the Embassy of Ecuador in Washington, DC, and the Latino Arts Center in Milwaukee, WI. “America Divided” will be on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. and effort to deliver beautiful bouquets to individuals in healthcare facilities in Knoxville. The bouquets deliver moments of kindness not only for those who receive the bouquet, but they also deliver smiles to many others around them. To learn more about volunteering, call 865-6339082 or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org.

N SEPTEMBER , Random Acts of

Flowers’ staff and board members will host the annual “Vol-A-Bration” to celebrate and thank their loyal volunteers. Held at the home of Hazen and Brettany Mirts, the afternoon will celebrate the men and women who truly bring the charity’s mission to fruition week after week. It is sure to be an enjoyable afternoon, with delicious barbeque, cold drinks, and great company. Every year two volunteers are honored for their exceptional service and dedication to RAF’s mission. The first award will be given to the volunteer who has dedicated the most hours of service during the last fiscal year. The award is named for Glen Baxmann, an attendee of the American Floral Art Institute in Chicago and a valuable volunteer who lost his courageous battle with cancer. Last year’s recipient, Donna Alexander, defines the selfless attributes which the award honors. The second award, the Rosie Bumpus Award, will be given to a volunteer who has gone above and beyond. Rosie Bumpus, the young woman for which the award is named, was the first RAF recipient to send a photo of themselves with their bouquet. She went on to share her story and passion for RAF with many others. She sadly passed away after a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis, but her legacy of spreading joy lives on through this award. Last year’s

recipient, Bettie Kurtz, continues her commitment to RAF by helping the mission in a variety of ways. New in 2014, an award will be given to an outstanding corporate volunteer group. Groups from companies such as Elavon, ADT, and Clayton Homes regularly donate their time to making bouquet deliveries, washing vases, and maintaining the RAF facility. Random Acts of Flowers has delivered more than 40,000 bouquets to date, and it takes an average of 50-60 volunteers per week to make it happen. The volunteers contribute in a number of ways: picking up donations, deconstructing floral arrangements, creating new arrangements, delivering bouquets, and many other tasks. In the last fiscal year, volunteers donated an average of 519 hours per month. During the course of the year, the top 30 volunteers donated nearly 3,500 total hours to RAF’s mission! The annual “Vol-A-Bration” is a fantastic opportunity to thank the volunteers who selflessly donate their valuable time

THERE’S NO QUESTION about it. With

few exceptions, we love our cars, and because of the high price of cars today and our desire to drive them longer, proper maintenance is essential. But what about your automobile’s exterior and those dents and dings that have accumulated throughout the years from car doors and shopping carts? They detract from your car’s overall appearance and lower its value at trade-in time. So what’s the solution? You can take your car to a conventional body shop, where the dents and dings are filled with a bonding agent, sanded, painted, and a clear coat of paint applied, or you could visit one of the numerous paintless dent repair places you frequently see opening and then closing months later. Another option would be for you to visit Advantage Paintless Dent Removal. So what’s the difference? Advantage owner, Brandon Wood, has combined more than a decade of automotive restoration experience with state-ofthe-art paintless dent removal technology to offer you the high level of service and peace of mind you deserve when removing those annoying dents, dings, and hail damage from your vehicle’s exterior – and all backed up with their 100% satisfaction guarantee and lifetime warranty. You’ll also appreciate their professional approach to their customers. “We have a very low key approach to our business,” said Brandon. “There’s absolutely no sales gimmicks or pressure to make a decision. The work we perform is our craft, and you’ll discover our uncommon passion for every repair we perform. Our work and high level of customer satisfaction speak for themselves.” Advantage also offers a variety of other services that benefit both car and truck owners. “We offer paint correction and polishing to remove scratches and swirls so your car has the showroom shine,” said Brandon. “We also offer spray-on truck bed liners to help protect its finish.” If you’d like to give your vehicle that new showroom look, call Advantage Paintless Dent Removal today for a free estimate. Small dents can be removed in about one hour for just a fraction of the cost the conventional body shops charge.

Renovating a Garage to Accommodate Your Life

Home

A GARAGE IS MORE than a place to park

your car. It is an extension of your house and sometimes the largest room in your home. Garage remodeling is currently the fastest-growing segment of the home improvement industry. It’s a separate room that can be used for various purposes: a workshop, warehouse, kids’ toy storage, or simply a place to hangout. Whether your garage is large or small, these renovation tips will help you be more organized and enjoy a less stressful life. Keep It Clutter Free – No matter the size, using a garage as storage for tools, toys, and infrequently or unused items is normal. However, keep it organized. Donate or toss unused items. Pack the rest in boxes or plastic bins. When you need to locate items later, they will be much easier to find. Install Built-in Cabinets – Quality garage cabinets are designed for the temperature extremes of a garage and the heavier-than-normal items we put there. This gives you storage that is designed for your specific needs and space. PremierGarage, the nation’s leader in garage enhancements and remodeling, designs suspended cabinets that make it easy to clean underneath while protecting the cabinets and its contents from water. Cabinets leave you with more space to use as you want. Use Wall Organizers – Slatwall, which attaches to your garage wall, is one of the most versatile systems for organizing and displaying items. With a system of hooks and other accessories, get larger items, such as bikes and wheelbarrows, off the floor. Work or garden tools are easily seen and within arm’s reach. Invest in a Floor Coating System – If you’re willing to take several days, you can put down a doit-yourself epoxy coating, but epoxy quickly shows tire marks, dirt, and peels up from the floor. Hiring flooring specialists like PremierGarage with their commercial-grade hybrid polymer system, you’ll have a durable, easy-to-clean floor that stands up to hot tires, abrasions, and spills. Most importantly, it will last for many years. Following these tips will help your garage work smarter so you can do everything you want – including parking a car!

Beautiful, Timeless Kitchen Design KITCHEN AND BATHROOM

remodels can add to the value of a home more than any other room renovation. Besides keeping with the style of the house, the bigger challenge usually is to stay within a budget that will not price the home out of the ballpark or even out of the neighborhood. Our homeowners have been living in their house in Whittington Creek for the past 18 years, and after raising three children in their home, they decided that it was time to remodel the kitchen. On their wish list were new appliances, granite countertops, upgraded lighting, a kitchen backsplash, draperies, a rug, and some furnishings. The plan for the kitchen was to gear it towards the family’s needs with the design and functionality, however also keeping a fresh and neutral look for when the time comes to sell the home. The cabinet color is a slight off-white with a slate/gray highlighting, which perfectly blends with the veining of the marble in the kitchen backsplash. In keeping with the existing blue color scheme for the walls, we found an original Persian rug at the Furniture Market which adds a splash of color to the room

and further accentuates the navy blue linen draperies. Many family memories were built while having meals at their kitchen table, so instead of getting new furniture for this area, we decided to upholster the original chairs and change out the existing chandelier. For durability and contrast in color, we opted for a black granite composite sink, black leather swivel barstools, and also changed the granite countertop material to absolute black for the raised bar only. Undercounter lighting, newly refinished hardwood flooring, and exquisite lighting from Visual Comfort gave it our finishing touches. Wolfgang Interiors & Gifts is located in Turkey Creek next to Earth Fare, and we specialize in new construction, remodeling, custom furniture, and draperies. Using Reclaimed Wood in Your Home THERE ARE MANY unique character-

istics of older homes that I feel set them apart from today’s newer homes. In my opinion, the intricate architectural details on display in many old homes are far superior to those found in most homes built today. However, if I had to name one trait that distinguishes older homes from homes built today, it would have to be their character. For me, character is felt rather than observed. When I walk in the front door of a home, the walls and flooring either emit character or they’re just standard framing with a few finish materials added to enhance their appearance. Recreate old home character with reclaimed wood Is it possible to add character to a home? Yes, it can be done with a generous infusion of reclaimed wood. Whether reclaimed from old barns, homes, or factories, reclaimed wood has decades and sometimes centuries of history etched into its beautiful grains and even visible on its surface at times. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. More people are finding ways to use reclaimed elements, especially reclaimed wood, when building or decorating their homes. Reclaimed wood lends a warmth to any room but also infuses a space with a sense of history and charm that new materials lack. You may be surprised at all the places you can incorporate reclaimed wood into your home. The material can be used for flooring, interior trim, beams, doors, wall treatments, or pretty much anywhere in a home where you might consider using wood. If you’re concerned about protecting the environment, using reclaimed wood is the ultimate in recycling. You’re reusing material from trees that were cut down ages ago and saving it from ending up in the burn pile or landfill.

THERE’S A RECLAIMED WOOD FOR JUST ABOUT ANY APPLICATION

Whether you’re looking for an elegant floor or an accent wall, there’s a reclaimed wood that’s right for your application. If you want wood that practically oozes character, choose reclaimed material that still displays the nail holes from its previous incarnation. Barn doors are also popping up all over the place. Their rustic simplicity can be incorporated into any design preference and living space. Unlike hinged doors, these sliding ones require and take up very little space. The doors are easily mounted on special hardware.

Bad Fido! SOMETIMES OUR BELOVED four-legged

kids do the wrong things. If your family has a puppy in training or perhaps an older dog who has an occasional accident, and if you own Oriental rugs, you’ll know where I’m going with this article. When your pet has an accident on one of your Oriental rugs, don’t panic. If you act quickly, you can save your rug. Pet urine has a high alkalinity factor that can potentially have a very negative effect on your rug’s wool and cotton fibers, which by nature are acidic. The alkaline solution can cause both the acidic dyes to bleed and can burn the rug’s acidic natural fibers. Left untreated, the pet urine will not only stain the rug, but it may also cause its fibers to begin to rot and deteriorate. Act quickly! Blot up as much of your pet’s urine as quickly as possible, and then call a professional Oriental rug cleaner who is both experienced and trained to clean and preserve Oriental rugs. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we have nearly three decades of carpet and rug cleaning experience. We are also unique in that we are one of the few Oriental rug cleaning specialists that has its own rug washing facility, where your rugs are professionally washed using our proprietary system, all under my personal supervision. But, once again, time is of the essence. While not all rugs can be saved, your probability for success is enhanced by swift action.

Allergy and Asthma Triggers in Your Home IT’S A FACT that Fall Invaders – ladybugs,

DECORATION PROTECTION IDENTIFICATION ANYWHERE!

stink bugs, box elder bugs, and kudzu bugs – can trigger symptoms of allergies and asthma as they cluster inside your home in large numbers, emit secretions, or die, leaving their body parts to draw other insects that feed on their dead bodies. Plus serious cases of asthma and allergies can lead to missed school days for children or work days for adults. So how do you take an active role in reducing your exposure to those triggers that aggravate allergy problems and asthma?

According to a recent survey conducted by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) and the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), 97% of allergists surveyed believe a pest-free home is an important step in preventing asthma and allergy symptoms.

Add to this fact that 90% percent of surveyed respondents advise their patients to reduce their exposure to pest allergens in their homes and consult with a pest management professional. With solutions for guaranteed pest prevention, Dayton’s will POWER SPRAY the exterior of your home for these Fall Invaders BEFORE they start arriving in large numbers and begin migrating into your home to set up camp for the winter. New customers will receive $25 OFF a Fall Invader treatment or $25 OFF the initial service for a quarterly perimeter pest control treatment with an annual agreement. Are You Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces? IF YOUR HOME isn’t equipped with retractable

screens, the answer is likely no. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. While homeowners across the country are increasingly creating today’s popular outdoor “living areas” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanentlyinstalled grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor spaces to their full potential. Retractable screens provide the perfect solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor living spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish the views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Because these retractable screens are available in different custom colors and wood grain finishes, they also help to provide a seamless transition with your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and be connected to the general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is called for. Start enjoying your home’s outdoor living spaces to their full potential today. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www. phantomscreens.com.

September in the Garden FALL IS IN THE AIR!

There’s a subtle shift that starts sometime in August and increases as the days go by. Summer has the lazy days that culminate in the dog days of August, and then when September begins, we all gather ourselves and get back to business. Vacations are over, days are shorter, nights are cooler, and we can venture back out into our yards without suffering heat stroke. The seasons are changing, so it’s time to go back outside and get dirty. » As always, the first thing I suggest you do is go outside and walk around your yard. Look for signs of insects or diseases on plants and broken or damaged branches on trees and shrubs. Do plants need to be cut back, divided, or pruned? What needs to be done to help your yard get ready for winter? » A brief note on water. We have been very blessed with an abundance of rainfall this summer. Don’t get complacent, however. If you remember last year, summer had good rainfall, but the fall had very little. Don’t put

those hoses away just yet. » Do you have bare spots in your yard? Perhaps some of the plants killed back by last winter’s cold weather still look terrible, and you’re tired of looking at them. Maybe there are some plants you wish had been killed last winter. Fall is the best time to plant most trees and shrubs, as well as some perennials, so stop by and pick out some new family members for your yard. » Do you have perennials that need to be moved or divided? Fall is a good time to take on that task. Most garden guides suggest dividing spring bloomers in the fall and summer/fall bloomers in the spring. Clemson University Extension Service has a great website (www.clemson.edu) with step by step instructions for those of you who would prefer online advice. » It’s time for the fall cleanup! Pull out ugly annuals, cut back dying perennials, and pick up any diseased leaves that are lying on the ground. This helps prevent disease and

insects from establishing winter homes. » Containers and hanging baskets may be looking a little tired. Trim, fertilize, and replace as necessary. Containers can also be transitioned to fall by adding mums and pansies. » Speaking of mums and pansies, let’s have a mini lesson. In Tennessee, there is no such thing as a “winter” pansy. Pansies are usually planted in the fall, will survive all winter, and will be gorgeous next spring. As for mums, the ones you buy this time of year are, for the most part, hybrids. They’ll need to be planted in the ground by mid/ late September if you want them to come back next year. » Did you have a vegetable garden this year? If so, keep harvesting the remnants of your summer vegetables, and plant cool season veggies as the summer ones die out. Get your garden ready for next year by cleaning out debris. If your plants had disease problems, don’t compost them, and choose a different spot for them next year. » If you had a problem with insects this year, you probably need one last treatment with an insecticide to keep bugs from setting up winter homes. You’ll also want to treat houseplants that have been outside for the summer before you bring them back in. This will prevent unwanted houseguests like aphids, whiteflies, and ants. » Fungicide treatments won’t help deciduous plants right now since they don’t have time to put out new leaves. Just get those diseased leaves off the ground, and don’t compost them! You don’t want to spread that stuff around next year. » You may need to do a little pruning now to remove dead or diseased branches or to tame unruly plants. Save the severe pruning for later, however. Hard pruning encourages new growth, and that new growth will be in danger if we get an early frost or freeze. » Mulch helps keep the moisture levels and temperature of your yard stable during the winter and also acts as a weed deterrent. If you piled it on in the spring, you may just want to fluff it up with a rake. If you didn’t put any on this spring, a couple of inches will help plants get through the cold months. » Keep checking our website and Facebook for updates. We’re working on getting our fall sales and workshops scheduled, and we’ll post those as soon as they’re finalized. As always, if you have questions, just give us a call or send us an email. Better yet, stop in and see us. We want to help you make your yard beautiful!

UT GARDENS PLANT OF THE MONTH:

CARDINAL FLOWER

CARDINAL FLOWER, also known

as Lobelia cardinalis, is a beautiful native perennial found throughout North America. It can be an overlooked flower for the landscape, but don’t rule out this great native. It was first found in wetlands of Canada when European settlers entered the area in the 1600s. Wild populations of this plant have been declining as wetlands have been drained and as more land has been developed for human use. There are numerous common names for this plant, including scarlet lobelia and red lobelia. The bloom, which is usually scarlet, is what really sets this plant apart from other summer-f lowering perennials. A raceme forms a single, unbranched inflorescence with multiple small flowers attached. The flowers can range from scarlet to pink or even white. Cardinal flower grows three to four feet tall with a spread of about two feet. Its vertical growing habit adds a strong

linea r component to your garden. Blooms can be present from early to late summer. In the wild, they begin in late summer and bloom into fall if moisture is adequate. Ca rdina l f lower is an excellent choice for a perennial border or naturalized garden area. It grows best in partial shade and in moist conditions. However, it can also tolerate full sun in cooler summer climates. The native varieties are often found growing along streams or other wet natura l areas. Because of its love of moist conditions, it is an excellent selection for a rain garden. In fact, you can find this plant growing in the rain garden in the UT Gardens, Knoxville. If you are not growing Cardinal flower in a rain garden, you will want to amend your soil with organic matter such as compost and mulch to help keep soil moisture levels to its liking. This perennial is one of those “plant it and forget it” selections and does not have any serious pest or disease problems. Cardinal f lower can also be propagated by clump division or seed. Just be sure to be able to identity young shoots so as not to remove seedlings when weeding. It is cold hardy from Zones 3-9. There are severa l cultivars for this plant, including ‘Alba’ with white flowers, ‘Heather Pink’ with pink flowers, and a new introduction called ‘Black Truffle,’ which is sure to stand out with its dramatic, dark chocolaty-purple foliage and bold red flowers. Superior to other dark-foliaged Lobelias on the market, ‘Black Truffle’ holds this deep color throughout the growing season. One reason I enjoy this plant is that it produces nectar for humming birds and but-

terflies. When it blooms at the UT Gardens, you can almost always see a humming bird or butterfly flying around getting a snack. Another plus is that deer tend to leave it alone! Derrick Stowell plans and conducts educational programs for the University of Tennessee Gardens, Knoxville. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Their mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.utgardens. tennessee.edu. Photo by D. Stowell

You Don’t Hear THAT Every Day! Seize the Day EARLIER THIS YEAR we purchased

a kayak and a paddle board. As we eke out what’s left of the warm weather, we head to the lake at every possible moment. Often it’s just the kids and I while John is working. During the last week of summer, I met a new group of ladies at the park as we were unloading our toys. As one of the women caught sight of the truck, which is covered in our company’s logo and pictures, she exclaimed, “Oh, I know you guys! I have your husband’s picture on my refrigerator.” As the words left her mouth, she covered her face with the realization of exactly how that sounded. We both got a good laugh, and she sheepishly explained she had been reading our articles for years and had even clipped one out and stuck it on her refrigerator to remind herself to call. When I told John the story, he nodded and added that he hears that story a lot! That makes me wonder… how many Everything Knoxville readers have John’s picture and a

Surface Doc article on their refrigerator? I have to admit, John is a good looking guy, and if I weren’t married to him, I might just put his smiling face on my refrigerator, too. But if you have clipped an article (ours or someone else’s), and it has more to do with the service provided than the cameo accompanying it, then I encourage you to “seize the day” and make the call! When you do make that call to Surface Doc, here’s what happens. First, you can expect to talk directly to John. After scheduling an appointment to evaluate your project, John will take time to explain in detail what results you can expect and can even teach you how to keep areas clean long after the cleaning is completed. Adversity and Accomplishment at 2014 Lantern & Carriage Tour at Old Gray Cemetery in Knoxville INETEENTH CENTURY

midwives, actresses, and female novelists. A dramatic suicide. A young man who became the first to climb Alaska’s Mt. McKinley at the age of only 21. Another who lost the majority of his face to an exploding shell during the Civil War. Yet another who attempted to make a national name with his own brand of liquor. And, of course, the indomitable, vituperative, and always controversial William Gannaway “Parson” Brownlow, rebel-ventilating Knoxville newspaper editor and Tennessee’s Reconstruction era governor. All make for

an interesting and exciting series of stories of adversity and accomplishment. Enjoy them all and more at this year’s annual Old Gray Cemetery Lantern Tour that will be held on Sunday, September 28, from 4 to 7 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Carriage ride is an additional fee of $5. Please join us for an afternoon of food, fun, carriage rides, and some amazing stories. No reservations necessary. Rain or shine. Parking is at area business lots and public street locations. For more information, call 865-522-1424 or visit www.oldgraycemetery.org.

EnhanceYourHome’s Safety and Security AMERICANS SPEND countless millions

of dollars annually on home security to safeguard their families, but, surprisingly, little on ensuring that their homes provide a healthy environment for themselves or their children. For those of you who are unfamiliar with my husband’s story when growing up here in East Tennessee, Jeremy was treated for years for chronic allergytype symptoms that simply would not go away. It was only after Jeremy & Ashley Akers his father removed the baseboards and some drywall from a laundry room that was adjacent to Jeremy’s bedroom that they discovered active mold growth that appeared to result from a leaking washing machine. Fortunately for Jeremy and his family, they eradicated the mold and its source and eliminated his allergy-type symptoms. But sadly, for hundreds and likely thousands of others, they continue to suffer daily from what they likely believe to be a wide range of medical issues which, in reality, are caused by mold. Molds are ubiquitous in nature, and mold spores are a common component of household and workplace dust. But when present in large quantities, they become a health hazard to humans, often resulting in allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Mold can thrive on almost any surface, especially cellulose-based objects. According to recent studies, approximately 50% of American households are confronted with moisture-related problems where molds are known to thrive. Acute exposure of up to 24 hours can result in normal allergic reactions. However, long-term exposure in your home can lead to bronchitis, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, chronic pneumonitis, and other conditions. If you or a family member experience any of these symptoms, they may be the result of mold inside your home, which often goes undetected: » Puffy, itchy, or watery eyes » Sneezing » Coughing » Skin rash » Constant headaches » Congestion » Sinus problem » Continuous need to clear your throat Like a home security system, checking your home for the presence of mold can provide your family with the peace of mind they deserve. Green Earth, Blue Skies – A National Public Lands Day Event

T

HIS FALL, the Town of Farragut

will host a new event – the inaugural Green Earth, Blue Skies – A National Public Lands Day Event – at Founders Park at Campbell Station and Farragut’s new Outdoor Classroom. This free event is sanctioned by National Public Lands Day (NPLD), the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands that, in 2013, experienced approximately 175,000 volunteers working at more than 2,200 sites throughout America. Green Earth, Blue Skies celebrates Farragut’s commitment to providing quality public lands in our community and East Tennessee region. The Town offers more than 150 acres of public lands within its 16 square miles, including parks, open space, and greenways. Scheduled for Sunday, September 28, from 1:30 to 4:30 pm, Green Earth, Blue Skies will feature a variety of activities – appealing to both youth and adults – and presenters encouraging citizens to get outside and learn about the wonderful natural resources in our community. Representatives from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division of Water Resources will host an in-creek activity at Founders Park to show attendees how to identify biological indicators of water quality. Various non-profit organizations will be on hand to distribute information

on protecting our environment, including Keep Knoxville Beautiful, the Tennessee Clean Water Network, and the Fort Loudon Lake Association. Additional activities will include a geocaching adventure and a scavenger hunt. A complete schedule of events is available at www.townoffarragut.org. Green Earth, Blue Skies will also be the formal unveiling of the Town’s new Outdoor Classroom, located on Campbell Station Road at the entrance to Farragut High School. This water quality demonstration space – featuring permeable pavers, rainwater harvesting, and activity areas – is intended to be used for hands-on community projects. These projects can last for weeks, months, or even years, depending on the types of projects community groups are interested in pursuing. Projects already planned include Eagle Scout projects building tables and planters, as well as several school-based projects, one

of which features a demonstration of warm season grasses and seasonal food and flower beds. Confused by the Alphabet Soup of Medicare?

Help is on the Way! IN MY DAILY client meetings, I find that

understanding Medicare is an area where my clients express the most frustration and uncertainty. I’m pleased to announce that Marsh Professional Group will be adding a dedicated Medicare specialist to transform that confusion into certainty. Here’s how we can help: ›› Before making your initial enrollment decisions as you are nearing your 65th birthday, we’ll review the pros and cons of using a Part B Major Medical Plan and a Part D Prescription Plan versus a Part C Medicare Advantage. We will also make sure you don’t miss out on the once-in-your-lifetime window of opportunity to sign up for supplemental Medigap insurance, where insurance companies CANNOT deny your coverage for pre-existing conditions. ›› Analyze your existing Medigap policies to make sure you’re receiving the best coverage for the least amount of premium, and consider alternative policies that might better meet your current needs. ›› During open enrollment each year – from October 15th to December 7th – we can review your Part D prescription coverage to determine if better coverage is available for you. This is also the time you can switch between Medicare Advantage plans or change from traditional Medicare to an Advantage plan. Did you know that some Advantage plans cover vision and dental costs, while traditional Medicare does not? ›› Because the cost of health insurance is more than just the monthly premiums, we can help you compare your total out-of-pocket costs, taking into consideration premiums, deductibles, co-insurance, and annual maximums. So help is on the way, and the best news of all is that we offer this as a free service to you. Why? The insurance companies pay us to do this work on your behalf, and since we are independent financial planners, we are under no obligation to any one insurance company. We’ll shop around and find what’s best for you. So call today to set up your complimentary, no obligation meeting, and plan on joining us at our next monthly Lunch ‘n Learn at Lakeside Tavern, where we’ll be discussing Medicare in greater detail. Call for a reservation. Space is limited.

Orphaned Bears Become Best Friends at

Knoxville Zoo

MONTY AND FINN , two young North

American black bears orphaned a year apart in Virginia, became fast friends after they were introduced in Knoxville Zoo’s Black Bear Falls habitat last month. Since making each other’s acquaintance under the careful supervision of zoo staff, the two boys have been enthusiastic playmates ever since, much to the delight of zoo staff and visitors. Finn, named for the town of Fincastle, Virginia, in the county where he was found, came to Knoxville Zoo from the Wildlife Center of Virginia (WCV). He arrived at the WCV after being confiscated in May 2013, by the Botetourt County, Virginia, sheriff’s office and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF), when he was discovered being illegally kept in a private home. Although Finn was still a young cub and the duration of his stay with humans was approximately 30 days, it was too late to undo the damage. Despite the yearlong rehabilitative efforts of the staff at WCV, he had lost his natural mistrust of people and could not be returned to his native wild habitat. In May 2014, the one-and-a-half-year-old male arrived at his new home in Knoxville, where staff hoped he would be a perfect companion for another young orphaned male, Monty. Monty, now a two-and-a-half-year-old young-

64

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2014

ster, arrived at Knoxville Zoo in September 2012 from the WCV. When Monty was found by animal control officers in Montgomery County, Virginia, in July 2012, he was travelling with a group of dogs and wearing a dog collar. After spending several weeks at the WCV, it was determined that the cub was human-habituated, which means he had lost

his fear of people, and could not be returned to his wild. The WCV opted to place him at Knoxville Zoo’s Black Bear Falls, one of the best black bear habitats in the country. Since being introduced, the two boys have been constant companions, and each seems to enjoy having a playmate, spending quite a bit of time during the day wrestling and tumbling. Knoxville Zoo is Knoxville’s largest yearround attraction. Located off exit 392 from Interstate 40, the zoo is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Knoxville Zoo is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Currently the zoo is open daily from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. Next-day admission is free after 3:00 pm. For more information, call 865-637-5331 ext. 300 or visit www. knoxville-zoo.org.

Clinton Glass SUCCESS

As a business owner I receive calls every day from advertising reps asking me to spend money with them. Whether it’s print, radio or television, they all suggest that their advertising method is the best way to get my message out to potential clients. They have a high hill to climb, because Everything Knoxville already does a great job of finding potential customers for us. Everything Knoxville puts out a quality monthly publication that is mailed directly to homeowners. That means my customers pull the magazine directly out of their mailbox, making it more likely for them to read. We track our client phone calls from several advertising sources, and Everything Knoxville does better dollar for dollar than any other publication I’ve advertised in. Thanks Judy and Tom!

2014 Knoxville HoLa Festival Celebrating its 15th anniversary with an event not to be missed

THE HOLA FESTIVAL is far more than

fun and games, far more than just music and dancing – although there will be plenty of that. The festival has a clear mission and that is to build cultural and communication bridges through art and education. The organization that developed the HoLa Festival 15 years ago is HoLa Latino, who has contributed to the cultural life of the Knoxville area through its varied educational and cultural programs. Of all that they do, the HoLa Festival is probably the most significant event of the year. The HoLa Festival will be on the Market Square in downtown Knoxville and will begin with a special “Kick Off ” event beginning Saturday evening, September 27, at 7:00 pm, featuring the unique Latin sounds of the Orquesta D’Jaime Bonilla along with the salsa moves of the Music City Salsa dancers. There will be plenty of food and drinks, as well as cultural displays. The Saturday evening “Kick Off” is open to the public without charge, but food and beverages will be avaialable for purchase. The full festival will begin on Sunday, September 28, at 11:30 am and will include a great variety of entertainment. Some of the events include: » The Marcel Portilla Band » The Asheville Tango Group » Flamenca Dance Company » Children’s activities, including a performance of “Little Red Riding Hood” by the Cazateatro Bilingual Theater » The group Sangria from Pellissippi State Community College » The Trote Norteno band » A Circus » Cultural displays and plenty of authentic ethnic food

A centerpiece of the afternoon will be the traditional and dramatic “Parade of Nations,” featuring colorful costumes representing many different Hispanic countries. One of the more interesting groups added to the program this year is the Sambos de Corazon – a non-profit Bolivian dance team from Annandale, Virginia, consisting of 20 children ages nine to 20. This dance company will not only display the traditional Bolivian dance “SayaCaporal,” but they also have a mission to keep families united and help children reach their full potential. Their goal is to offer a safe environment to learn dance activities using caring young adults as role models. The dance company provides a unique opportunity for families to dance together. A few things to keep in mind about the 2014 HoLa Festival: » All events are open to the public without charge » Parking is free, and there are several lots located near the festival » The area is safe and secure with security officers on duty » The ethnic foods and a variety of beverages will be available for sale, but the prices are very reasonable For more information about the festival, contact the HoLa Festival office at 865 3353358, email casahola@holafestsival.org, or visit www.holafestival.org. Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend

T

HERE’S A FASCINATING

heritage center nestled on the edge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Townsend, Tennessee. It tells the story of thousands of years of human experience in the Smokies area through exhibits of archaeological and historic artifacts. But it’s not just a museum with static exhibits. It’s a true cultural center, with an outdoor Appalachian village of historic buildings and tools, all readily accessible to the imaginations and minds of thousands of school children and general visitors alike. Its name is Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, and since its inception in 2006, it’s grown into one of the most engaging and fascinating cultural attractions in East Tennessee. The Heritage Center grew out of a chance discovery of ancient Native American artifacts in Townsend during a highway widening project in the late 1990s. When archaeologists from the University of Tennessee excavated the sites during an 18 month period, they discovered thousands of artifacts and postholes, which indicated that ancient humans had lived continuously in the area as far back as the Archaic Period of southeastern archaeology. It was a remarkable discovery. Based upon the significance of the sites, a first-class museum and heritage center was constructed to tell the story of the archaeological sites, along with that of the prevailing southern Appalachian mountain culture. In 2006, the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center opened its doors. One of those involved from the beginning of this success story is Bob Patterson, the Executive Director of the Heritage Center. “An immense amount of work and personal commitment on the part of a host of good people led to the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center,” said Bob. “Like all start-up organizations, we all faced a lot of challenges in getting this fine center to come to fruition. But due to the spirit of our volunteers, members, Board of Directors, sponsors, and staff, the Heritage Center’s original vision of being a museum has evolved into 70

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2014

much more than that. The Center annually hosts seven festivals, more than 20 musical concerts, several special exhibits, and 8,000 to 10,000 children who participate and learn about their heritage through educational and entertaining programs. What makes us unique is the diversity from children learning to use a blow gun to adults dancing during concerts. The Center strives to offer unique, one-of-a-kind opportunities to guests, and we’ve got something entertaining and educational going on throughout the four seasons of the year.” One of the Center’s most popular events is the upcoming Blue Ribbon Country Fair on Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Now in its eighth year, this annual event celebrates the old-fashioned fairs of the past. Favorites of the event include “The Farmer in the Cove” interactive exhibit for young visitors, the Townsend Artisan Guild craft tent where visitors can make a special item to take home, the Foothills Antique Tractor and Engine Club exhibit, livestock displays, and much more. Kids of all ages enjoy contests that include “Hog Calling,” “Crow-Like-A-Rooster,” “Lodge Ladies’ Skillet Throw,” “Watermelon Seed-Spitting,” and others that truly make this event an unforgettable day of family fun. Other upcoming events include: » Now through December: “Chasing Dreams: Baseball in East Tennessee” special exhibit that explores the impact that this national pastime has had in this region, from logging camps in the early 1900s to the Tennessee Smokies Minor League team. » October 4-5: “Smoky Mountain Woodcarvers Festival” showcases wood

carving at its best with competition from beginners through professionals. » November 22: “Holiday Homecoming.” Celebrate the holidays with live music throughout the day, with crafts and tasty treats from the open hearth and more. » February 19-22, 2015: “Smoky Mountain Snowdown: Winter Heritage Festival” celebrates the human history and cultural traditions of Townsend, Cades Cove, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. » April 17-19, 2015: “Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival.” Enjoy vendors, classes, and demonstrations for Fiber Arts enthusiasts. » May 2015: The “Quilters Road Show” will feature historic quilts presentation and evaluations. (Date TBA.) The Center’s “Sunset Music Series” concerts are typically held in the spring, summer, and fall, featuring the finest regional musicians. The Heritage Center’s facilities and buildings are also available to rent for birthday parties, weddings, and other private events. Additionally, Cades Cove Heritage Tours also offer tours for individuals and organized groups with advance reservations on its Educational Touring Vehicles from the Center. Relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery while you listen to stories about Appalachian life in Cades Cove. About Marble Springs State Historic Site Marble Springs State Historic Site is the last remaining home of John Sevier. Born in Virginia in 1745, John Sevier made a name for himself as a Revolutionary War Hero during the Battle of Kings Mountain (1780), a key player and governor of the short-lived State of Franklin (1784-1788), and ultimately was elected to serve as the first governor of the State of Tennessee (1796).

Marble Springs was the approximate 350-acre farm that Sevier lived on from 18011815, the last years of his life. Sevier named his farm Marble Springs because of the Tennessee Rose Marble that was quarried on site and the natural springs that flowed on the property. While visiting Marble Springs, you will have the opportunity to tour several historic structures that are designed to represent various aspects of John Sevier’s life and times. These structures include the Tavern, Loom House, Smoke House, Spring House, and the John Sevier Cabin and detached kitchen.

THE SELF-EMPLOYMENT

SURGE

AND HOW PROFESSIONALS CAN BEST PREPARE ONE IN TWO American workers are

projected to be self-employed by 2020. While the shifting economy has surely pushed some people into independent work, many have chosen it. Career goals for contemporary professionals are changing, and given how quickly this trend is taking hold in the United States, today’s employees who aspire to be tomorrow’s contract workers need to prepare now to navigate this changing landscape. A new study, The Future of Work: Preparing for Independence, examined the attributes and skills of those who are gainfully self-employed to help aspiring contractors get and stay ahead in this everchanging work environment. According to the study, professionals are choosing selfemployment in order to control the type of work assignments they pursue (67%), to have a greater sense of flexibility and work-life balance (64%), and to follow a passion (59%). While they are young, millennials should be proactive in taking advantage of intrapreneurship and training opportunities, as well as acquiring transferable skills like project management, budgeting, sales, and marketing in an established organization. This will be the foundation of a viable contract career in the future. Based on the research findings the following are recommended strategies to help professionals excel in independent employment: Take off the blinders: Being your own boss may sound enticing, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. Survey respondents said that in addition to having solid expertise in a particular field, success-

ful contract workers must be self-starters who have the ability to cope with uncertainty, including an unpredictable income stream. Many contactors work remotely, have multiple clients to report to, and have to juggle multiple projects at once. Assess your strengths and weaknesses before jumping into contract work, make sure you have an organized action plan to help you start off on the right foot, and always keep an open mind and be able to adapt quickly. In-person networking still trumps social media: The survey pool reported that while social media is important for contractors’ branding and reputation, it often does not generate income. In fact, just 6% said social media outreach led to paid project work. Therefore, create strong profiles on sites like LinkedIn and Google+, but refrain from spending too much time on these networks, and make sure you still build in face time. Seek in-person meetings, attend events and workshops, and be visible to your future clients beyond your social media accounts. Start small and look local: Although technological advances allow many selfemployed professiona ls to offer their ser vices globa lly, the majority of the respondents still obtain most of their work assignments from within their immediate metropolitan area. While it’s a good longterm goal to think about how you might leverage a larger and more diverse pool of potential clients, aspiring contractors should first embark on being visible in their local communities. It is also a good rule of thumb to start small with only one or two clients until you master the craft of con-

The Power of the Testimonial MORE THAN A few adver-

tisers think that testimonials are corny, while others overuse them to the point where they are largely ignored, and a mere handful use them well. The main advantage that a great testimonial offers is the opportunity for a perceived objective user of your company’s product or service to offer his or her truthful feedback on their experience. To accomplish this, offer your client some helpful guidance. Ask for their feedback as it relates to specifics. For example, their responses to specific questions related to those key characteristics that successfully differentiate your company from your competitors. Also consider inserting a photo of your client using your product or service into their testimonial. Don’t over edit your testimonials. You may have a degree in communications, but a

testimonial delivered in your customer’s own words makes it more believable. You can also use a testimonial to overcome perceived consumer objections. Let’s say that you are relatively new in your field, and your competition is using that as an objection. A customer testimonial describing your experience, knowledge, and training can become an effective tool in overcoming this perceived objection. Another important consideration to keep in mind when making use of testimonials is their authenticity. The use of the initials of the person offering the testimonial and the absence of a location places the authenticity of the testimonial very much in doubt and can actually be a negative, which can result in negative and unintended consequences. Testimonials have the ability to create powerful and positive impressions on potential

Done improperly, they can have the reverse outcome. The difference between a great and mediocre testimonial rests with you and requires only a small amount of planning on your part.

The Accelerating Asset of Attitude SOCIAL MEDIA is here to stay. As a

result, there are few secrets left sacred. It’s said to never question a woman about her age or weight. However, last month, when I turned 50, it seemed like the world knew and had something to say about it. It was humorous as well as insightful. To some, turning 50 seemed a blessing; to others, more a curse. Really? The alternative is clearly unfortunate. It’s one of those defining moments when you realize how your attitude completely determines how you view life. What is your most valuable asset? It’s not your stock portfolio or bank account. While those are important, our most important asset is understanding the incredible power to choose our attitude. We all know people who live life with the cup half full. We also know people who live half empty, and many of the latter would just as soon empty your cup while they’re at it. To them, we say “no way.” It’s up to each individual to live intentionally, ready to stand guard and protect that which impacts every facet of one’s life. Measuring risks is key to any asset management. We study stock reports to determine how

our money is performing. Of equal value is the importance of measuring personal growth and success in key relationships. In order to grow, we must first accurately identify potential growth areas. Then we need to assess attitudes on a regular basis. Three simple strategies may help: Train your attitude: Like anything else, we have natural tenancies. That doesn’t mean we can’t change. If you’ve become complacent, then fix it - if not for you, for those who interact with you on a regular basis! We can always learn more productive ways of thinking by implementing patterns that will perpetuate personal growth. Protect your attitude: You wouldn’t allow a poor money manager access to your retirement accounts. You seek a professional that can grow your money on your behalf. Such it is with influencers. Watch who you let in, what you

talk about, and guard diligently what you think about. Your inner circle should be carefully selected based on the quality of their influence. Share your attitude: It’s easy to choose well when things are going smoothly. It’s when you seem to be swimming upstream that determines your strength. People with good attitudes have problems just like everyone else. Life is challenging for everyone. There’s plenty to worry and complain about. But does either help? No. Inadvertently, it has a cost. Every day is an opportunity to make the best of your circumstances and illicit positive change. You are your own asset manager. Your attitude could be the defining trait in the quality of your life. Choose carefully. Don’t give in to mediocrity. Give yourself the advantage by fighting to maintain a good attitude. Stand out, stand up, and stand firm. It’s your choice. Breaking the Divorce News to Your Children IF YOU AND your spouse are thinking of

parting ways, keep in mind that you’ll always have your children in common. Divorce generally comes with a lot of negative emotions and hard feelings. As hard as it can be, never let your personal issues interfere with your role as a parent. No matter the reason for a divorce, your opinion of your soon-to-be ex is yours and shouldn’t be passed on to your children. Never mention the word divorce to your children unless you both are certain about it. If things are still up in the air and this could just be a rough patch in your marriage, keep it to yourself. If you’re certain that you’ll be divorcing, if at all possible, both parents should be present when children are told. Presenting a united front reduces the chance that your children will feel they have to choose a side or that one parent is being betrayed. Tell your children you’re divorcing at an appropriate time. Break the news when no other events or activities are going on. Expecting them to play in a ballgame or to attend an outing that same day is not healthy. Children need time to process the information and to ask questions. They also need

freedom to express their emotions. Kids can easily think things are their fault. Give them reasons for the divorce so they don’t internalize it and think it’s because of something they’ve done or not done. Be honest, but don’t give information they can’t handle or shouldn’t know. Talk in generalities as much as possible, and don’t overload them with details. For instance, telling children you’re divorcing because you fight too much is something they can understand. It’s best to not show anger toward each other or to place blame. The most important message you want to get across to your kids is the divorce is between dad and mom, and it doesn’t change the love you have for them. Children will process their emotions differently. Expect your children to be upset. Some kids will be very expressive with their emotions, other may not. Young children may ask simple questions such as where is everyone going to live. Other children may ask more detailed questions about the reasons for the divorce. Always be as honest as you can. If you think the questions are getting too personal, simply say those details are between you and

your spouse. Be on the lookout for changes in your children as they adjust to the divorce. Divorce is difficult no matter how amicable. Young kids may revert back to younger behaviors such as temper tantrums, clinginess, bedwetting, and so on. Older kids may become angry, have problems in school, and may emotionally try to detach from siblings and parents. If you notice any changes that are troublesome, talk to your child, and see what you can do to help. You and your spouse may be divorcing, but you’ll always be partners in parenting. Try to maintain a united front, keep things as consistent as possible in your children’s lives, and always be open and honest and available for conversations, hugs, and kisses. The Danger of Forgetting and Not Teaching IF WE’RE NOT careful, we’re going to

raise a generation who doesn’t understand respect for sacred things. Recently I was at a memorial of an event that took place on American soil where many innocent lives were lost. I was really shocked to see several people and children behaving very inappropriately on such sacred ground. Parents were allowing their children to run and jump while laughing and screaming. Teens were busy taking “selfies” while smiling and laughing in front of monuments. Adults had their cell phones ringing with loud, obnoxious ring tones. I couldn’t help but think “how have we become so flippant about such sacred things?” Parents, we must do better. We have to be better examples and help our children understand the value of life, sacrifice, loss, honor, respect, and sacredness. It starts when they’re very young. It starts by the way we 74

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE September 2014

teach them to use hushed tones and quiet behavior when visiting sacred places. Also, just because a place is not sacred to us doesn’t mean we don’t show respect to those who do view it as sacred. That’s what respect is. It means showing that we value the feelings of others through our behavior and words. Recently a young teen received thousands of hate mail messages after she posted a “selfie” of herself smiling in front of the ruins of a War World II concentration camp. She had no idea that posing and smiling in front of such a horrible reminder of so much pain was inappropriate. Once we lose sight of honoring our history, of honoring our heritage and honoring places that others view sacred or holy, then we truly will have become an uncivil society. This must be an ongoing conversation with our children. Start by taking your children to places that represent history, and beforehand,

study about what took place there so they can try to grasp why we visit it and why it’s important to remember these people and places that helped shape our world. A society in danger of losing their way is a society that’s quick to forget the past. I hope we can all make a better effort in making sure that we pass on to our children a love and admiration for sacred things, and may we all be humble enough to understand the importance of it.

Fat Reduction That Fits AS

S U M M E R is winding down, Ultrasound is just starting to heat things up. Fortunately, the science behind the removal of unwanted body fat has evolved. There are now scientifically proven, non-invasive and minimally invasive procedures to help individuals obtain their ideal body shape. If you can pinch an unwanted inch, the revolutionary Liposonix device may be just the answer to what diet and exercise alone have not been able to accomplish. Liposonix is a new device that utilizes focused ultrasound energy to non-invasively permanently destroy body fat. “1 hour, 1 treatment, 1 size smaller” is the moniker for this treatment. In controlled studies, Liposonix patients lost an average of one to two inches from their waistlines, with maximum results seen within eight to 12 weeks. The treatment takes approximately one hour, and there is no downtime. In fact, there are no posttreatment restrictions, and most patients can leave the office and immediately return

to their normal activities. Liposonix is different from other noninvasive body contouring devices that can be limited in their ability to treat certain areas of fat and may require several hours and multiple treatment sessions to adequately address problem areas. The Liposonix system is highly versatile, allowing control over precisely how and where energy is delivered for a truly customized treatment in a single one-hour session. While Liposonix was cleared in the U.S. by the FDA in 2011, it is backed by 10 years of extensive study. It has been featured on Dr. Oz, 20/20, The View, and in many of the top beauty magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle. For those that need to lose more than an inch or two, tumescent microcannular liposuction may be the answer. This in-office, minimally invasive procedure, which utilizes only local anesthesia, was pioneered by a dermatologist in 1985 and is now considered the worldwide standard

for liposuction. SmartLipo and SlimLipo are two well-known devices that have been cleared by the FDA for the destruction of fat (laser lipolysis). These devices serve as an enhancement to tumescent microcannular liposuction, promoting easier fat removal and better skin contraction. After SmartLipo or SlimLipo, most patients are able to return to work in two or three days. Virtually any area with excess fat can be treated. The neck, arms, abdomen, love handles, and thighs all respond beautifully to this procedure. Patients often ask me how much weight they are going to lose with these procedures. I try to explain that these are body contouring procedures, not weight loss procedures. It is also very important that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle after these procedures. Even though fat is permanently destroyed, if a patient gains weight, the fat must go somewhere, and it probably won’t go where you want it to.
