Establishing a Home Office • Create a physical office space or separate area for your work (preferably not the dining room or bedroom). Use bookshelves or a screen to create a physical separation if a room isn’t available. • Treat that space just as you would if you worked in a traditional office setting. • If you need temporary office space or a conference room, look into using rent-by-the-day facilities.

Dealing With the Solitude • Everyday plan to do something outside the office – even if it’s just going to the post office. • Meet with clients, colleagues, etc. at their office. • Join a business networking group or support group.

Staying Motivated • Create a daily schedule of tasks to accomplish. • Get up, get dressed and get into your office. • Do give yourself break times.

Leaving Work When Work Is at Home • Establish a set work day and try to separate work life from home life. Remind yourself you need some downtime to stay refreshed and focused on your business and to avoid burnout. • Turn work off – maybe establish a rule that there’s no work talk during dinner, for example. • Shut your office door at the end of the day.

Creating Boundaries • Close your office door or set up a physical boundary that lets family/friends know you’re working. • If you work from home and have children at home, establish a time that’s dedicated to work (half-day preschool, sitter, evenings/early mornings, etc.). Consider sharing a sitter with other work-at-home moms and dads. • If you’re working with your spouse, set some boundaries and have some “non-work” time.

Interested in working from home while continuing to work for your employer? Visit www.whenworkworks.org for a Workplace Flexibility Toolkit, including tip sheets for employees, supervisors and companies, employer models and more.

Time Saving Tips • Plan: Pick a day to create your family’s weekly plan. Delegate responsibilities and schedule errands based on their proximity to where you need to be. Write the plan on your family calendar and bulletin board and make sure everyone knows their role. Go over the day ahead at dinner or breakfast. • Prep: Make your menu for the week including slow cooker recipes and pre-made casseroles. Set out what you need for the next day the night before (clothes, errand items, mail, etc) and use a container that goes from the car to the house to “catch” what you need as you think of it. • Personalize: Design your day for what works best for you! Whether you use a smart phone or a wall calendar to plan your day, create a system that works for how you perform best.

betty buzz: CLOSET ORGANIZIER Clean Out worn it in a year, put it in the consignment, donation or recycling basket. • Have something nostalgic? Store it with other memorabilia. • Place items that need mending or altering or cleaning in separate baskets. • Properly store out of season clothing and shoes. Organize • Hang like-items together in sections: shirts, dresses, slacks, jackets, etc.

Personalize The last step to organizing any closet is making it your own! Don’t neglect the space just because it is behind closed doors. You start and end your day there, so pictures on the wall and a coat of paint can transform your closet into your “me” space.

• Coordinate each section by color to make it easy to create ensembles. • Invest in clear shoe boxes (try the Family Dollar), and recycle the boxes they came in. Stack shoes neatly so that you can see and access each pair. • Hang decorative hooks to hold belts, necklaces, purses, socks, scarves and other items. • Use baskets or bins to hold or other items that don’t have a “home”.

Order that entree broiled or baked instead of fried with the sauce on the side.

• Relax and kick back with a 5oz glass of red wine and a palm full of almonds on the porch with the girls after work. • The saltshaker is NOT your friend! Don’t let it get your blood pressure boiling and your ankles swelling. • Put down the cigarettes - once and for all.

Play with your swizzle stick or drink umbrella instead.

PERFECT time to catch up on the neighborhood news.

The goal of networking should be first to help others. Start to build a connection by being being friendly and positive: offer help, a compliment, or positive feedback. - Danielle Rice, President, FemCity Charleston

Keeping yourself and your family organized and on task is easier when you create systems that work for you. Creating a "Command Central" in your home can help keep everyone moving in the right direction. • Locate your station where things naturally pile up, most-likely near the front or back door. • Assess your needs based on how your family lives. What are you always searching for? Which items get tossed on the counter when you walk in? Once you determine what items and activities need to be addressed, create a storage solution for each one. • Some items to consider including are: ❍ Bench or Chair ❍ Wall Shelf or Book Shelf ❍ Baskets for Mail, Shoes, Sporting Equipment ❍ Magnetic or Cork (with pins) Bulletin Board or Dry Erase Board with Clips ❍ Large Calendar ❍ "Cubbies" for Each Family Member (baskets, bags, buckets - get creative!) ❍ Bag or Box that Travels To/From the Car ❍ Hooks for Dry Cleaning, Bags, Coats, etc. ❍ Clips or Folders for Outgoing Paperwork or Mail ❍ Sticky Notes or Magnetic Note Pad with a Pen on a String

Catering Questions Wondering what food to serve at your wedding? Some things to consider: • Style: Envision what your reception will be like as the food will help dictate your guests activities. • Cost: Hors d’oeuvres aren’t necessarily less expensive as great time is spent preparing small portions. Also take into consideration the cost of the serving pieces you will need for each option. • Time of Day: If your reception is close to meal time, your guests will expect enough food for a meal.
