Be clear about your intentions when entertaining clients, vendors and employees to maximize your goals. Ask Yourself: - What is my mission/objective and whom am I trying to reach? - What fun/creative way can I most efficiently achieve my objective? - What is my budget? - Is my plan going to ultimately be effective in imparting my company’s core values? Entertaining Ideas: • Events: host a party, luncheon or breakfast to reach many people at once. Be sure to check a community calendar for other events and engage a planner to help you execute your event flawlessly. • Wine & Dine: coffee, breakfast, lunch or dinner in a restaurant that you have a relationship with; make reservations and cover all expenses. Consider a dinner that includes spouses as well. • Charity Events: invite others to join your company at a fundraising or charity event where you have purchased the tickets. • Get Active: tennis, golf or a nice long walk; don’t talk too much shop mid-game, instead make enough time before or after to share information. Not an athlete? Consider a mani/pedi, cooking demo or wine tasting. • Tickets: tickets to the symphony, theatre, a sporting event or any special occasion • VIP Access: private tours at a museum or gallery

5 Business Pitfalls to Avoid 1. Thinking you Know Everything: The economy and your demographics are constantly changing; be willing to change with them. 2. Working too Much: Burn out is bad for business. Make sure you schedule an adequate amount of time off for you and your employees. 3. Business & Personal Money: Be careful to keep personal and business finances separate. If you must borrow from one or the other, keep a receipt and replace the funds as soon as possible. 4. Multiple Leaders: Having a business partner can be risky, so have a buyout agreement included in your business plan and consider hiring a Chief Executive Officer. 5. Mis-Hires: Instead of hiring friends and family, send every potential employee through the application and interview process.

The Business of Philanthropy Giving back to the community is a fulfilling experience and many people expect businesses to give back, and reward those who do with their business. How are you and your business active in the community? • Find the Right Fit: what organization or cause best fits your corporate identity and culture. • Create a Plan: Collaborate to determine what skills, expertise and resources you can provide will be the most beneficial over the short and long term. • Get Involved: Encourage employee participation; consider offering allotted time off for volunteer hours. • Share the Good News: Let your customers and community know which causes you are support. It engenders good will while helping spread the word about the organization.

Top 5 Business Etiquette Do’s and Don’ts In a world of ever-relaxing etiquette, we sometimes forget that the smallest bit of decorum - especially in the business world - goes a long way. DO repeat the person’s name whom you’ve just met; you’re much more likely to remember it that way DON’T give bonecrusher or limp fish handshakes; a firm 3 shakes with good eye contact is all you need DO follow up with potential clients or employers; even if it’s a quick “thank you and it was nice to meet you” email. It won’t go unnoticed. DON’T post complaints about your boss or place of work on social media. Once you hit post or send, it’s out there permanently, and can come back to haunt you. DO watch your alcohol intake in after-work social outings - you don’t want to be “that girl” in your office! - Southern Protocol

. . .where business and community meet Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an organization that was there for your business – you know, really there when you needed it? Well, you’re in luck. The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization that has what it takes to build a strong business community. Your Chamber membership delivers business resources, community leadership, professional development, networking opportunities, and so much more! Find out what we can do for you.

Doing it yourself can be fun and economical, or that is what we are led to believe? 1. Be Realistic. Be sure of your own abilities, as jobs as small as putting up shelves can be tricky, and if you own an older home the walls, floors and ceilings may be uneven. 2. Necessary Tools. Do you have the right tools and skills for the jobs ahead of you? You have the hammer, screwdriver, drill, level, tape measure, pliers, assorted screws and nails, but are they all that you may need? Some jobs will require specific tools that may be expensive to purchase and you may not have the skills to use them. 3. Complicated Jobs. Always leave heavy and complicated jobs involving gas, electricity and plumbing to the professionals. These would include changing sockets, replacing fixtures and laying flooring. Jobs can be more complex than they appear! 4. Quality assurance. Although you can save big on small projects by doing the labor yourself or by purchasing discounted and clearance items, don’t skimp on the essential necessities. Poor quality can be recognized quickly, even amidst the most successfully completed projects.

5. Simple Tasks. You can save some money by doing relatively simple tasks, such as painting, replacing mirrors or switch plates or hanging shelves. Don’t be tempted to rush through a job or cut corners. 6. Time is money. Calculate the amount of time you would expect to spend on a project and be truthful with yourself. Estimate the value of your time versus the cost of hiring a professional – you may profit by focusing your efforts elsewhere. 7. Get a second opinion. The price of a consultation fee with a professional may save you thousands in costly mistakes! Dial before your drill, you’ll be glad you did. 8. Use Your Best Judgment. Books and online resources can help with these tasks, but home improvement may be a breeze for those in the industry, but it can be a nightmare if you don’t know what you are doing. Projects can turn into dangerous and expensive ventures if you do not have practical experience or the time to spare. Also, be sure to check with your county to see if permits and inspections are necessary before beginning a task.

Office Decor When decorating the office, go beyond personalizing your desk. The whole room should reflect your personality and that of your business. Some easy tips to incorporate: - Idea Walls: tack inspirational items to a cork or magnet board. - Art: frame or shadowbox articles, photos, products or awards special to your biz. - Feng Shui: balance the extremes - light and dark colors, different fabrics and soft and hard surfaces. - Keep it Straight: Hide cords and keep your workspace tidy using storage solutions. - Bring in the Green: indoor plants placed throughout the space will be invigorating and provide some fresh air.

“Hang with those that have your answers and get away from those that have your problems. What you focus on will expand, so make sure you are focusing on the right things.” - SHELETA BEDNEY, Sunrise Painting

Wedding Dress Colors Today, most brides wear white on their special day, however, until Queen Victoria wore white at her wedding, (instead of silver) it was fashionable to wear your best dress. The color did not matter. The following is a traditional rhyme on dress color: Married in White, you have chosen right, Married in Blue, your love will always be true, Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl, Married in Brown, you will live in town, Married in Red, you will wish yourself dead, Married in Yellow, ashamed of your fellow, Married in Green, ashamed to be seen, Married in Pink, your spirit will sink, Married in Grey, you will go far away, Married in Black, you will wish yourself back.
