We asked Claire Gibbons, president of Powerspeak Communications LLC, to share her top 10 list for marketing and promoting your business. How are you doing on the checklist? 1. Plan Your Strategy. To be successful in business you’ve got to know where you’re headed. Writing and consistently updating your business plan can help you clarify your business model, targets and marketing strategies. 2. Know Your Brand. What message are you putting out there from how you talk, what you wear, to how you conduct yourself in business? How do you want others to perceive you and your business? 3. Know Your Customer. Take the time to really get to know your target customers. Do your market research. LISTEN to them and ASK questions. 4. Talk Your Walk. You and your employees are the best ambassadors for your brand. Be sure everyone can articulate concisely and persuasively about the business or product anywhere at anytime. 5. Get Personal. Send handwritten notes on stationery to clients, as well as business leads. Let people know you’re thinking about them, their business and their needs. 6. Get it Write. Invest in an AP Style Guide. All communications from marketing materials to news releases, ad copy and media kits should conform to the accepted standard for business communications. Make sure emails are punctuated and spell checked. These are all extensions of your brand. 7. Tell a Story. How has your business affected people, made their lives better? Sharing a third party account of an experience with your business is great PR and word of mouth is the best for growing your business. 8. Shop Around. Talk to a variety of vendors when you ask for estimates, and make sure they understand your needs for the project at hand. Ask them to recommend another way to accomplish your goals; often their solutions may be less expensive, more efficient or effective. 9. See and Be Seen. In addition to networking and building relationships, extend your business’ reach online as well. Get familiar with social media technologies such as Twitter and Facebook as tactics for extending your brand and reaching your market segments. 10. Mix it up! To effectively support your business you must have a mix of marketing strategies incorporating public relations, advertising, partnerships and promotions. Evaluate those strategies regularly to measure and gauge their effectiveness and ROI.

Securing a business loan means being prepared with the necessary paperwork. Busy woman, Cindi Rourk, Loan Officer with the Charleston Local Development Corporation, shares advice for putting together the materials you need before applying for a loan. • Start with an updated business plan. Any “dust” could signal the business owners’ lack of interest (or worse, dedication!) • Include the financial numbers – a set of projections, broken out monthly for the 1st year and annually for years 2 & 3. • Show how much the entire project costs, and include how much the owners are investing and exactly how much is needed to borrow. Lenders typically like to see owners invest 20% or more of the project cost. • Gather personal information. A current personal financial statement and tax returns for 3 years for every business owner with 20% or more ownership. • If you haven’t checked your credit report lately, it’s time. Try www.annualcreditreport.com. Dispute any inaccuracies before submitting, or explain the information in the application. • Describe the collateral offered to secure the loan in detail. • Be prepared for any questions the lender may have for you. • Don’t take rejection personally! Business loans are not personal loans – banks can decline because of issues related to their bottom line, not yours. • Don’t go it alone. Contact your closest SCORE office or the Small Business Development Center for free business consultation (www.smallbusinesscharleston.org). • If declined by traditional banks, try an alternative lender like the Charleston Local Development Corporation (www.charlestonldc.com).

betty buzz: Yard & Garden Tips

January - Prune most trees and shrubs. Do not prune azalea, dogwood, forsythia, redbud and rhododendron - they should be pruned after they bloom. - Plant trees.

February

- Buy your fall-flowering bulbs (dahlias, gladioli, cannas, and lilies). Wait for warmer weather (soil temperature of at least 55*F) to plant them. - Spray fruit trees with dormant oil to control mites and scale. - Fertilize fescue and other cool-season grass lawns. DON’T fertilize warm-season grass lawns early in the winter! - Vegetables to plant: Asparagus crowns - early February – late March Cabbage - Feb. 15 – Apr. 1 Garden Peas - Feb. 1 – 15 Turnips - Feb. 20 – Apr. 1

March

- Prune repeat-blooming roses (floribunda, hybrid tea roses) just as the buds break dormancy. Do not prune your once-flowering roses now; wait until after the bloom. - Apply nitrogen for Bermuda grass and zoysiagrass lawns that have been over seeded for the winter. DON’T fertilize centipede or St. Augustine yet, nor warm-season lawns that were not over seeded. - Vegetables to plant: Carrots - Mar. 1 – 15 Lettuce - Mar. 1 – 15 Irish Potatoes - Mar. 15 – 30 Turnips - Feb. 20 – Apr. 1

Used Car Buying Tips • Only deal with a salesperson you feel comfortable with. • When negotiating, use a method you feel most at ease with (email, phone or fax). • If you’re financing, get your own credit report and get loan information from your bank or credit union to have figures to compare with the dealer’s offer. • Make an offer as low as is feasible based on research and the current market. It’s best to negotiate up.

“Charleston’s flooding is a part of living in the Lowcountry. For the life of your car and your personal safety: do not drive through standing water! If you know the depth of the water and MUST drive through it, be sure to keep your foot on the accelerator at a slow, steady pace and don’t let off the gas, as your exhaust system may uptake water.” – JOHN BUDDIN, ASE Certified Mechanic

Toast of the Town

The day you get married is not an ordinary day. Why celebrate with ordinary flowers? No pre-set package deals forcing you to fit a standard. You tell us what you want, and together we plan for your wedding flowers. Call us to set up an appointment with one of our designers and visit our online gallery to start exploring ideas. Visit us in our new location.

Lotus Flower

- Generally, there are 3 toasts given at a wedding reception: the best man, the bride’s father and the groom. - Make sure all glasses are full prior to beginning the toasts. - Do not use a fork or knife to “ting” the glass; ask for everyone’s attention. - Start the toast by stating your relationship to the bride and groom. - Use personal stories, fond memories you have of the bride and groom, for the best impact, and be respectful. - Humor is great as long as it is tasteful. Consider ending on a serious note for well wishes to the newlyweds.

WEDDING EVENT VENUES CONTINUED... Lowndes Grove Nestled on 14 stunning acres on the Ashley River, Lowndes Grove is an unrivaled Lowcountry setting for truly unique weddings.

Wedding Makeup Advice • For morning ceremonies, use lighter colors, especially if the ceremony is outdoors. • Evening events require a darker makeup application, but don’t get carried away. • Consider the lighting of your venue. If you must be under fluorescent lighting, make sure to avoid green tones of makeup. • For the brightest smile on your big day, begin using whitening strips at least two weeks in advance. And, wear red or berry lipstick to make teeth appear whiter.
