Getting your Garage in Gear 1. De-clutter & Group Like Items. Label storage bins as “Donate”, “Trash” and “Keep”, and assign all items in your garage to these 3 categories. Go through the “Keep” items and group all according to purpose. 2. Create Specific Areas. Use graph paper to sketch the garage creating an area for each activity that occurs in the space. Take into account your actual lifestyle - if shoes pile up by the door, create a space by the door for a shoe rack. Make sure the projects and items used most often are in the most accessible locations.

Rolling carts or tables on casters (add them yourself!) are perfect for work stations that can easily be “put away.” Shelving for baskets or bins, and wood or metal pegboard are terrific storage solutions. 4. Stop Your Dog Digging If you have a dog that loves to dig holes and your yard looks like a minefield, try these steps: - Determine why she is digging. If she’s hot, provide more shade. If she’s bored, provide more exercise. If she just likes to dig, read on! - Create a “digging space” for your dog that digs for fun or by nature. Mask the space with shrubs or plants and encourage her to dig there by burying treats and rewarding the behavior. - Keep your dog away by sprinkling cayenne pepper around the areas she digs, or fill “repeat holes” up most of the way, then mix in pinecones or moth balls with the last bit of dirt to repel her without harm.

Here are some of our favorites that are close to home and easy enough for the entire family to enjoy. Dungannon Heritage Preserve (9.0 mile) Gently rolling, mostly easy-to-follow, foot-traffic only, out-and-back dirt trail through mixed forest and wetland areas. The Palmetto Trail - Awendaw Passage (7.0 miles) Easy walking/biking section of the Palmetto Trail. Scenic overlook and boardwalk. Francis Marion National Forest - I’on Swamp (2.0 miles) Easy, two-mile loop trail along rice dikes that are a part of the remnants of the abandoned, Witheywood Plantation. Composting 101 Composting Structures: The sides should be loose enough to provide air movement and one side should open for easy turning and removal. If you choose not to use a container, cover with a layer of yard trimmings or soil to prevent moisture loss. Composting Materials: Most plant material including fallen leaves, pine needles, grass clippings, flowers and the remains of garden plants. Kitchen scraps, such as fruit and vegetable peels and trimmings, crushed eggshells, tea bags and coffee grounds. Shredded, woody yard trimmings. Avoid: Compost made from grass clippings treated with herbicides and pesticides. Meat, bones and fatty foods (cheese, salad dressing and leftover cooking oil). Pet or human wastes. Weeds with large storage roots or seeds. Diseased or insect-infested plants. Using Compost: Mix compost with soil to enrich the flower and vegetable garden, improve the soil around trees and shrubs, to top-dress lawns or as a mulch. Add no more than 1/4 - 1/3 of compost by volume to potting mix for houseplants. Soak compost in a burlap or cheesecloth sack steeped in water to make compost “tea” for young plants.
