betty buzz: HOLIDAY RECIPE

Cru Cafe Four Cheese Macaroni from Chef John Zucker Ingredients: 2 qt Heavy Cream (reduced in half) 1 cup Pepper Jack (hand grated) 1 cup Fontina (hand grated) 1/4 cup Olive Oil

1 lb Pasta (we use orecchiette) 1 cup Aged Cheddar (hand grated) 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese (hand grated)

For Final Cooking: 1/2 cup Pepper Jack (hand grated) 1/2cup Fontina (hand grated) Salt and pepper

1/2 cup Aged Cheddar (hand grated) 1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese (hand grated)

Method: - Preheat oven to 375 degrees. - Reduce cream slowly by half in medium size sauce pan. - Cook the pasta in salted water el dente. Cool down rapidly in cold water then drain all excess water. Coat the pasta lightly in Olive Oil to prevent sticking. Set aside. - Grate all cheeses by hand keeping them separate. Pre-bought grated cheese tends to have corn starch added and will change the texture. - Add cheeses (save for final cooking) into reduced cream over low heat until fully melted. Set aside off the heat. - In a large mixing bowl, add the “final cooking cheese, pasta and cheese sauce. - Salt and pepper to taste and mix well without breaking up the pasta. - Add final ingredients to a casserole pan and bake at 375 degrees until lightly brown on top.

Women Getting Ahead According to a new Catalyst study, women pursue career growth equally to men, but the strategies men use to get ahead in their careers, like working longer hours and building relationships with the bosses for example, do not work for women to advance their career. So what does work? The study found that making your achievements known and networking with influential others are techniques that have worked for successful women. Be sure that your superiors are aware of your accomplishments and ask for feedback to ensure that your hard work is noticed. Target networking groups and opportunities that put you into contact with those in a position to influence your status. Source: Carter and Silva. Harvard Business Review Oct ‘11 wwwhbr.org

Winter Hair & Skin Care • Lock in Moisture - Slather on your moisturizer while your skin is still damp from the shower. Wear a hat to keep in the moisture on the scalp, and dry, cold air out. • Bring in the Water - Using a humidifier will help keep your skin moist and help with dry sinuses. Take a nice warm shower, but not too hot, as that can damage skin and break down the oil barrier that locks in moisture. • Swap Your Products - Products containing water can actually freeze on your skin, so consider switches for your liquid foundation and moisturizers to ones that contain oil for the winter months. Look for hair conditioners that say “replenish” and condition daily. • Protect Your Skin - Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 15+. Lips and hands are especially vulnerable to dry, cold air. Keep chapstick and moisturizer handy for frequent application.

betty buzz: HEALTH CHECKUP

Busy women often forget to take time for themselves, but scheduling regular checkups with your doctors can add years to your life. Get your calendar out and make these appointments today! Vision

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, most people should receive a complete eye exam every two years. People who wear glasses, have diabetes or are over the age of 55 should get checked more frequently.

Dental

The American Dental Association recommends that adults and children have a dental check up and cleaning every six months. Patients with gum disease should visit the dentist every 3 months.

Breast Exams

Hearing

The risk for hearing loss dramatically increases after age 50. If you are worried about your hearing, talk to your doctor or nurse and they can schedule a hearing test.

Heart

Cholesterol tests assess the risk for coronary heart and/or artery disease. Women should begin getting a cholesterol check up every 5 years at the age of 45. Women between the ages of 20 and 45 who have other risk factors for heart disease should also get their cholesterol tested. These factors include tobacco use, diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease. To find out what the numbers mean, and learn how to lower them, check out the Cholesterol Center at www.webmd.com.

Pap Test

A Pap test consists of a pelvic examination and a check for cervical cancer. All women over the age of 18 and/or who have been or are sexually active should have a pap test done every year. But, new guidelines issued by the American Cancer Society suggest that women over the age of 30 who have had three normal Pap tests in a row, may get screened every 2 – 3 years, unless they have other risk factors.

Dermatologist

Women should perform breast self-exams monthly beginning at age 20. After age 40, women should have mammograms done annually. These exams check for any cancerous lumps. Early detection improves the chances of diagnosing and treating cancer successfully. Women with a family history may need to have exams done at an earlier age and more frequently. For more information on breast cancer and how to perform self-exams, visit www.breastcancer.org.

Colonoscopy

This procedure allows the doctor to look inside your large intestine in order to detect any abnormal growths, ulcers or cancers. A colonoscopy should be performed at the age of 50 and should be done every 5 – 10 years thereafter. According to the Center for Disease Control, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the US, but with regular screening tests, one-third of those deaths could be avoided. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/screenforlife.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends annual screenings for skin cancer. Pay attention to any changes in size, shape, color or texture of a mole or sore, you need to visit a dermatologist immediately to have it checked. Can’t remember to make a regular appointment? Go to www.aad.org/professionals/SkinCancerScreenings/skincancerreminder.htm and sign up for a free email reminder!

Bridal Gown Cleaning & Storage Tips

• Hang your wedding gown by the interior loops to prevent stretching or sagging. • Do not story your gown in a plastic bag or container, as plastic emits fumes that can yellow your gown and trap moisture that causes mildew. Instead, use an acid-free, archival wedding chest lined with fabric or acid-free tissue. • After cleaning, ask to personally inspect your gown before it is put into the storage container. • Store your bridal gown in a climate-controlled, dry environment instead of the attic or basement.
