With three World University Championships hosted in the country in 2010 (weightlifting, bridge and badminton), Chinese Taipei again showed its dynamic place in FISU.

Pavol Svrcek (SVK), Gold Medallist in the 85kg Men’s category
We know how serious people from Chinese Taipei are when it comes to organizing a FISU event, and this one was no exception to the rule. We want to thank the Organizing Committee for the quality of its preparation and accompaniment.
Weightlifting was added to our program in 2008, so the first WUC could be held. The groundbreaking championships organized in the Greek city of Komotini were record-setting compared to the various world University cups that had taken place in recent years. First, from the standpoint of participation, we had the pleasure of registering 32 countries – an exceptional number that shows how interested the student community is in this sport. Female participation was remarkable with 56 competitors from 23 countries. In terms of quality, too, we were delighted to see the presence of many great champions in the discipline which immediately put the competition on the international map.
Taichung is well known for its agreeable climate and its rich and attractive surroundings, so it was an excellent choice for the championship. Specifically, the National Physical Education University hosted the tournament. As we said in the introduction, Chinese Taipei has many great weightlifting champions, and as the host country, it sent the largest number of delegates to the competition with a team of 10 men and five women. The United States came close with 14 contestants (7 men and 7 women). With a harvest of 32 medals (out of 132) of which 17 gold, there is no denying that Chinese Taipei got the lion’s share. Countries like Poland (18 medals) and the United States (17 medals), Canada (13) and Japan (12) also did very well. The level was quite good for this kind of event and many athletes bettered their own performances or broke national records.
The city of Taichung hosted the second edition, and this is no accident, knowing how popular this sport is in this part of Asia. Nevertheless, we registered a sharp drop in participation for the tournament since only 15 countries came to Chinese Taipei. With 46 men and 28 women, the competition was nevertheless a beautiful one.
This was the case for example Hsieh Wei-Chun and Chen Shih-chien, two “locals” competing respectively in the 105 kg and over 105 kg categories. Both of them made the podium (gold for Hsieh Wei-Chun, silver for Chen Shih-chien) breaking their personal and the national records! At the closing ceremony, two contestants received an award as the best weightlifters in the championship (presented by the IWF press committee): Hsu Shu-Ching (TPE) competing in the women’s 53 kg category (who won three gold medals) and Adrian Zielinski (POL) in the men’s 94 kg category (also three times gold). That was the conclusion of this edition which on the whole was entirely satisfactory.
In any case, this kind of competition helps actively promote the sport in the student community. The International Weightlifting Federation could not agree more. It was present in Taichung in the person of President Mr. Tamas Ajan (also a member of the International Olympic Committee) who congratulated the Federation on its good collaboration with FISU. We hope to meet again in 2012 for the third edition of the World University Weightlifting Championships.
