By Matthew Elliott Eager to catch a glimpse of the world’s finest aircraft, more than 50,000 enthusiasts will descend on the beaches of Motril this weekend to celebrate the town’s International Air Festival. Now in its 11th year, Motril’s Air Festival is quickly growing in international acclaim and is one of the biggest in Spain, drawing 40,000 spectators last year and set to far eclipse that record in 2016, as the organisers attract a fascinating fleet of fighters, rescue helicopters and old classics, ready to turn heads and place hearts in throats.

The C-16 Eurofighter Typhoon, French patroller Cartoche Dore, and Soviet-made Yak 52 will be among the highlights, performing headspinning acrobatic aerial feats, as local authorities across Axarquia gear up for one of the region’s busiest festivals. Local businesses and councillors will be eager to use the three-day long event to promote Motril and neighbours Nerja, Velez-Malaga and Torre del Mar. With posters produced in French, Turkish, English and Spanish, the promoters are acutely aware of the economic boom and tourism potential on offer.

There will even be an appearance from Spain’s only wingwalker, who will dance on the wings of a jet while it twists around in midair at 140mph. Known as the ‘bride of the wind,’ Ainhoa Sanchez debuted her daredevil art form at the Northern Ireland International Airshow and is hoping to secure sponsorship in Motril. The Air Festival begins on Friday, June 24, with a day of training and practising military formations commencing at 12pm. Saturday will see more training, particularly of the civilian aircraft, during the

day, and a celebratory affair at the Motril Beach and Business Hotel in the evening. The full display takes place throughout Sunday from 11.30am, and will see the various fleets strut their stuff in the skies above Axarquia, with excellent views available from the Playa Granada.

Do guns kill, or do people kill? The great gun debate

EWN

3

Your papers, your views Our readers have been expressing their views about gun control which appeared on our website.

www.euroweeklynews.com Here are a few of your comments some of which have had to be cut due to size but we are always happy to hear from everyone even if their comments are uncomplimentary.

Hunter killers IT always amazes me to see hordes of hunters with their dogs entering specially preserved areas so that they can go shooting animals for sport as much as for food. Everyone complains about an old lion being shot and that was terrible, but do we really need to allow such wholesale hunting to take place? Marsha

Pest control THERE is no genuine reason for anyone to use an automatic weapon for hunting and in the UK they even banned the ownership of automatic shotguns because of their possible use in criminal activities. At least in Spain the bulk of all guns are shotguns, many being used for pest control, but it is worrying to discover how many handguns are legitimately owned. Tony

GUN CONTROL: Barack Obama is known to be in favour of more gun restrictions in America. By Eleanor Hawkins THE recent mass murder of 49 people by a gunman at a gay club in Orlando, Florida, has once again opened up the can of worms that is the great gun control debate in the United States. While American citizens have the right under the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, adopted in 1791, to keep and bear arms (and many see any attempt at gun control as a breach of this constitutional right), as the Senate prepares to discuss possible measures, such as preventing those suspected of terrorist links from buying guns, there seem to be signs that Americans could be becoming more willing to accept limited restrictions in the aftermath of the horrific massacre. Although President Barack Obama is known to be in favour of more gun control, the presumptive Republican nominee to run for president Donald Trump has admitted there is scope for more restrictions, but insisted he will “save the second amendment.” However in Orlando, where he travelled to comfort victims’ relatives and survivors, Obama said:

While as a mother I am completely against guns, I have had to face the fact that wishing they didn’t exist is not going to stop them existing.

“Those who defend the easy accessibility of assault weapons should meet these families. Our politics have conspired to make it as easy as possible for a terrorist or even just a disturbed individual to buy extraordinarily powerful weapons, and they can do so legally. I hugged grieving parents and they asked ‘Why does this keep happening?’” Gun owners claim that if ‘the baddies’ have guns, they must be able to defend themselves, and go as far as to insist that the guns themselves are not the problem at all. Victor Pfund, from Texas, told

EWN: “Guns don’t kill. Gay, Muslim, jihadist ********s kill.” While in Spain this may seem a matter which is of little importance, a little-known fact is that there is one legally owned gun in the country for every 16 inhabitants according to Guardia Civil records, although controls are far stricter, with only certain people being able to own weapons, and a number of different licences required to do so. Those who are allowed to obtain licences range from military, police and state security force members to hunters, however there is also one type of licence (type B) available to those able to prove that they ‘need a gun to protect themselves from serious threats.’ These include jewellers and people who have received terrorism threats. Although they are subjected to exhaustive studies, they are not required to undergo any tests on use of the weapon itself and are also restricted to 100 bullets per year, which they claim seriously limits their ability to shoot their guns correctly if they did not have previous experience. There are currently 8,592 holders

of this type of licence in Spain, meaning there are 8,592 people out there carrying guns who may not even know how to use them properly, Madrid’s Olympic Shooting Federation vice-president Felipe Lopez explained. Of the total number of guns legally registered in Spain (2,918,136), 75 per cent are shotguns and 11 per cent are rifles used by hunters. With the gun debate also running in the European Commission following recent terrorist attacks in Paris, the National Arms Association in Spain poses an important question to us all, stating: “It makes no sense to limit the number of legal arms in the fight against organised criminal groups that use illegal weapons. Placing more restrictions on gun ownership is not the way to ensure criminals can’t kill.” While as a mother I am completely against guns, I have had to face the fact that wishing they didn’t exist is not going to stop them existing, and believe that there are some convincing arguments from both sides. Are we really naïve enough to believe that passing laws will stop those intent on evil from breaking them?

Personal use MY son lives in Florida so whilst I can see both sides of the argument I am glad that he has guns that are locked in his safe. He takes them in another locked unit when he goes shooting at the club, and has learned to shoot and handle the gun properly. Kay

Gun control FUNNY how countries with the strictest gun controls have fewer people killed by guns than those that have less strict controls, no correlation between the two of course. Sean

American way WHILE some of the weapons available are certainly over the top, guns are an intrinsic part of American culture and won’t go away any time soon. Walter

By Eleanor Hawkins THE Axarquia-Costa Tropical, like the rest of Spain, is gearing up for a magical night of celebration for the San Juan beach bonfire fiesta tonight (Thursday June 23). Each year, thousands of people take to the beaches all along the Spanish coasts for the event, which marks the shortest night of the year and the summer solstice with magical celebrations focused on fire, water and

purifying the soul. There are many traditions and superstitions surrounding the night of San Juan. Legend has it that if someone jumps through the fire three times then plunges into the sea their soul will be cleansed, a belief which often leads to more cleansing of burns and wounds than souls when young enthusiasm and alcohol combine! More sensible superstitions include walking into the sea backwards at midnight to

attract a year’s worth of good luck, while some insist a swim at midnight (or wetting your face if the water’s too cold) leads to waking up more beautiful the next day. Bonfires, apart from providing light and warmth for night-long parties, are also believed to be magical and tradition has it that throwing in objects which bring bad memories will have the desired effect. Magical or not, anyone near a beach tonight has no excuse not to have a great time!

The team was accompanied by officers from the Guardia Civil’s Seprona nature branch and reported back that the group consists of five mares, two stallions and a foal and that all bar one of the stallions are in good condition with no signs of malnutrition, dehydration, skin or hoof problems. However, they explained, one of the stallions showed signs of pain and lack of mobility due to an old fracture which probably explains his poor condition. The equine charity intends to recommend that the group is left on the mountain and that the authorities check up on the horses periodically and take measures to guarantee their welfare.

Illegal homes hope By Eleanor Hawkins THERE are approximately 600 illegal homes in Rincon de la Victoria, mostly to the north of the motorway off the road to Benagalbon, which the council is currently searching for ways to regularise. A new PGOU Urban Development Plan is in the pipeline, as the old one has been in place since 1992 and there have been many changes since

then, however the concerns of owners of homes built on rural land were somewhat calmed at a recent meeting at which Town Planning councillor Antonio Sanchez promised each individual case will be studied to try and find a solution and there would be no demolitions without a court order. One possibility will be to change the status of the land in the area to allow for building, which would open the way for construction of a further 200 homes.

It’s a car free zone By Eleanor Hawkins AS the first wave of summer visitors appeared in La Guardia, Salobreña, on Sunday (June 19) the talk of the town was a new parking ban due to kick in over the next week or so. The measure, which Local Police officers on patrol are warning drivers of, will be in place until September 15 and is to strictly forbid parking anywhere in La Guardia except for two waste grounds at the entrance to the district and on Plaza de la Guardia. Those who ignore this measure (and the yellow lines which have been in place on the narrow streets, but mostly ignored, for years) face fines of between €90 and €140, the officers are explaining. The news has mostly been well received by the 50 or so year-round residents, who have for years been complaining of the chaos which

descends in July and August as the population multiplies by four and weekend visitors also drive down and insist on trying to leave their cars as close to the beach as they possibly can. However some shopkeepers are not so sure. “If our customers don’t mind carrying their shopping back to the car then it’s fine, but if they go elsewhere because of it we won’t be so happy,” said Inma, a cashier at the supermarket. Councillor for Caleta-La Guardia Gabriel Jeronimo said at a meeting with residents to explain the measure: “Everyone wants to park right by the beach, in the shade, and that just isn’t possible. We’re not just banning parking for the sake of it, we’re trying to make things easier for locals and visitors.” Rosa, who lives in La Guardia all year, said: “if

HARD AT WORK: Volunteers clearing rubbish in the Peon Punta de la Mona area.

Volunteers help clear up the area By Eleanor Hawkins TWENTY volunteers from two Almuñecar fishing clubs volunteered to clear up the Peon Punta de la Mona area, which has gathered rubbish for years, and ended up collecting 131 kilos of waste. The group, coordinated by Carlos Ferron, spent more than two hours on Sunday (June 19) clearing up the popular fishing spot, which was in desperate need of some attention.

The volunteers from Costa Tropical and Ciudad de Almuñecar fishing clubs were joined by members of Amigos del Mar (Friends of the Sea) association and had help from FCC municipal cleaning company, reported local Environmental Councillor Luis Aragon, who went along and personally thanked the volunteers. “We hope more fishermen and visitors to these areas learn to collaborate and keep them clean,” Aragon said.

Everyone was invited to a party on Saturday (June 18) to celebrate the end of the season, which ends this month as classes are not held in July or August. The council, Hijano said, is already working on new ideas for the next season to increase the activities available.

Shopping at night, tourists’ delight

LATE NIGHT: Shops will remain open till 2am for two nights in summer. By Eleanor Hawkins ALMUÑECAR businesses have agreed on the dates for two ‘shopping nights’ on July 23 and August 20, during which shops will remain open from 9pm to 2am, the council has reported. The dates for the events, which proved pop-

ular last summer and are looking to become a tradition, were agreed upon at a meeting between Commerce Councillor Rafael Caballero Jimenez and local business owners. Another agreement reached at the meeting, the councillor said, is to allow shops to stay open until 11pm between July 1 and August 31, “to meet the needs of tourists and visitors.”

A tough and thirsty summer looks likely COMPETA, one of the areas of the Axarquia with the most year-round foreign residents, has had water shortages for six months now, and is still not sure how it will keep

everyone supplied over the summer months. Although the village itself has not yet suffered cuts, a hosepipe ban has been in place for a few weeks now,

and rural areas have seen restrictions to their supply. The problem began when one of the two wells the village tapped into in Casa de la Mina dried up, local mayor Obdulio Perez explained. In an attempt to solve the problem, the council is working to recover an old well in the Adelfas area which fell into misuse two years ago, after a forest fire destroyed the electrical cables there. Now, Perez said, the cables have been replaced and the council hopes to get the old well running again. However, this alone will not be enough to guarantee supply, particularly as the Adelfas well used to provide 3.5 litres per second, whereas the Casa de la Mina mine gave eight litres per second, more than double. While the village has an official population of just 3,500, this is likely to increase to almost triple that amount during the summer months.

IN AGREEMENT: Gregorio Campos and Diane McClelland signed on the dotted line.

Support for local animal charity By Eleanor Hawkins AXARQUIA Animal Rescue Association has reached a collaboration agreement with the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol Axarquia to carry out an awareness campaign at local schools and start a ‘Trap, Neuter, Release’ programme in the area. The commonwealth is to provide €800 to help cover the costs of the charity’s initiative, which will include talks to teach children how to be responsible pet owners and hopefully reduced the number of an-

imals abandoned in Axarquia. Gregorio Campos, commonwealth leader, who signed the agreement along with charity president Diane McClelland, said: “We think the work the association does is very interesting. They help strays, look for homes for them and promote responsible pet ownership, all of which boosts the social welfare of our villages.” “Their work provides numerous benefits for both people and animals as it reduces colonies of strays which can be smelly and noisy,” Campos said, also stressing that they avoid inhu-

mane killing of animals. Axarquia Animal Rescue has been running since 2012, when the first network of volunteers was created. Spokeswoman Maria Jose Martin said: “We’re really pleased that the commonwealth has decided to get involved with our project, which is important and will benefit both people and animals. “We will start giving talks at schools next term to teach youngsters that when they get a pet they must become responsible owners, look after them well and never abandon them,” Martin explained.

Sports Councillor Maria Jose Roberto explained that the inspection had been a routine one under the Junta’s legionella prevention and public pool programme and that in both cases the pool had been found to meet all current regulations.

Community buildings insurance, are you fully covered?

COMMUNITY BUILDINGS: Make sure you find out what is covered. IF your home or property in Spain forms part of a block of houses, apartments or condominiums, it usually includes community buildings insurance. You automatically pay this each month along with other community fees. Generally this cover is limited to keep premiums to a minimum. Cover includes communal elements such as the buildings, the grounds, lifts, pipes, walkways, padel tennis courts, etc. Unlike insurance policies in the UK, community buildings insurance does not cover fixtures and fittings such as your kitchen or bathroom. TAKE OUT YOUR OWN SEPARATE COVER If an upstairs neighbour goes on holiday and leaves the tap on, resulting in a flood in your home below, the community buildings insurance will not cover the damage. Línea Directa recommends that you take out separate cover for your home. This should protect all the contents of your home, its fixtures and fittings and anything else not covered by the community insurance. YOUR HOME IS AN ASSET Remember, your home is an asset. It represents a lifelong

investment and it’s imperative that you get the right insurance from the beginning. Whether it’s your own residence, you rent it out or if you’re planning to sell it, your home may be at risk if it is not fully covered. Damage occurring from flood, fires or break-ins can be expensive to repair and or replace. Paying a small premium now will protect your investment for the future. FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT YOUR COMMUNITY IS COVERED FOR Most community covers are very basic, so while you are shopping around for the best comprehensive home insurance, you will need gap or first loss cover to ensure you are protected in the meantime. Prior to contracting a new policy, find out exactly what is covered by your community policy. Many people in Spain who live in an apartment discover too late that they are not adequately covered by their urbanisation’s community insurance. CURRENCY TROUBLES: Hoping to attract investment.

Nigeria is to devalue naira AS previously reported, Nigeria, one of Africa’s potentially strongest economies which depends so heavily on oil revenues, has been experiencing significant troubles with obtaining foreign currency. Having blocked credit cards and transfer of funds out of the country, the black market rate between the dollar and naira

has doubled over the last few weeks. Several years ago, a new naira was introduced almost ‘overnight’ which meant a lot of the illegally held, black market and money-laundered currency became worthless. Now the naira is to be devalued in the hope it will attract new foreign investment.

Brexit halts bond sales IN order not to cause any disruptions in the value of its regular sales of Treasury bonds, the US Treasury will suspend the sale of bonds on June 23, the day of the Brexit referendum It is apparently quite common for the Treasury to suspend such auctions in the event of US monetary policy statements and for the sake of protection of its bonds, it is placing the Brexit referendum in the same class.

Brothers help Conde ALTHOUGH Mario Conde was arrested over money laundering and embezzlement charges for when he was head of Banesto bank, it appears he is unable to meet the €300,000 bail requirement to allow him to await trial from home. Luckily for him, it has been revealed two brothers, who are prominent members of the Francisco Franco Foundation, have used some of their properties as guarantees against his bail.

Government debt levels rise FROM an electoral point of view, the interim government must have been disappointed when the Bank of Spain announced on June 15, just a few days before the general election, that Spain’s public debt rose above 100 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 to its highest level in 20 years. This means that with a debt of €1.09 trillion

An interesting rule to work A MADRID Court has instructed a company to re-employ a worker who had been fired because he was sent to prison for two years, as it considered this decision was contrary to the former employee’s right of rehabilitation. Not only should the company take him back, the judge declared, it should also pay him a full salary for the period following his release from prison in February when he became available to return to his former job.

A pretty serious business Revlon known worldwide for its hair colour products has announced it wishes to take over Elizabeth Arden to create a giant company.

By John Smith DESPITE the fact that reports for several months have indicated that there is plenty of money available to consumers around the world to spend on ‘luxuries’ it has become apparent that the cosmetics world is suffering quite considerably with many of the larger companies finding themselves financially stretched with declining sales and the need to reduce staffing levels.

RON PERELMAN: Here with his daughter, is the major shareholder of Revlon.

sale of the brand but has now had a change of heart and wants his company to grow with this takeover. At one time, it seemed that price was no barrier to the sale of cosmetics and a famous

name such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift would ensure that perfume would literally fly off the shelf, but times have changed and consumers are becoming much more price conscious and are not so easily swayed by a fa-

mous name, if they can obtain a similar fragrance at a lesser price. Revlon, known worldwide for its hair colour products has announced that it wishes to take over Elizabeth Arden to create a giant company which can offer both hair treatment and anti-aging creams with a huge offer of $14 (€12.4) per share which values the company at $870 million (€773 million) although more than half of that amount will need to be used to pay off debts. Apart from the advantage of being able to offer a much larger range of product, Revlon estimate that by combining manufacturing and distribution networks with the resultant loss of staff, it can generate combined savings of $140 million (€124 million) as well as expand its exposure across the world market. Any decision to proceed will depend upon approval by shareholders as well as regulatory bodies but it is anticipated that this should not cause any particular problem and the two companies should merge before the end of 2016. Both companies have significant histories with Elizabeth Arden opening her first business in 1910, whilst Revlon was founded as a family business in 1932 but if the takeover does happen then forecast annual turnover for the combined brands will be $3 billion (€2.65 billion).

By John Smith SOFTWARE giant Microsoft has announced that it will form a joint venture with a recently founded company in California called Kind Financial which is intended to give accurate reports to businesses and government agencies on the production and sale of legalised marihuana products in its first ever partnership of this type. With 29 States having either decriminalised the use of marihuana completely or for medical purposes and with Native American reservations starting to make marihuana freely available, there is an incredibly large potential market for software which will track legal marihuana movement from ‘seed to sale.’ Kind has the software and Microsoft runs the government Cloud facility so the pair of companies has identified a natural synergy which will no doubt raise significant income for their businesses. Microsoft told the BBC in an emailed statement that it supported “government customers and partners to help them meet their

missions. “Kind Financial is building solutions on our government Cloud to help these agencies regulate and monitor controlled substances and items, and manage compliance with jurisdictional laws and regulations.” With such a large potential market, it may also be in the mind of State and Federal taxation authori-

ties that once a high quality working system is in place that there will be a significant opportunity to raise funds. Kind’s software, which is called Agrisoft Seed to Sale, ‘closes the loop between marihuana-related businesses, regulatory agencies, and financial institutions,’ a press release said.

Apart from the fact that the movement of legal marihuana will be closely monitored, there is the added bonus as far as the authorities are concerned in that it will be extremely difficult for unscrupulous producers or sellers to divert any significant amount of marihuana to the illegal trade. With the drop in sales of tobacco

product, it seems likely that manufacturers will be keeping a very close eye on the development of legalised sale, particularly as it was reported more than 30 years ago that many of them had registered trade names such as ‘Acapulco Gold’ in anticipation of the full legalisation of the plant and its commercial sale to the public at large.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Spanish and English Wills, including Brexit Charlotte is a solicitor in Stone King’s Trusts and Estates Team and is experienced in a broad range of matters including wills, probate, powers of attorney and related tax matters.

Charlotte Macdonald, specialist cross-border solicitor at Stone King LLP, answers common questions about Spanish wills - including Brexit. When I die, can I ensure my Spanish assets go to my loved ones? Yes, by proper planning, including a properly drafted will which is (critically) the product of professional cross-border advice and not advice from a well-meaning friend. Make no mistake, wills are complex ‘contracts’ and we regularly see heartache caused by badly drafted wills that misunderstand, misinterpret and misapply intricate cross-border succession law. I thought Spanish law dictated who inherited my property? Yes, it does. When you die a proportion automatically passes to fixed beneficiaries, unless you take advantage of EU Regulation 650/2012 (Brussels IV). Under the Regulation, British nationals can ‘elect’ ‘British’ law to apply but be warned, an election can sometimes be disastrous. What about Spanish succession tax? You cannot opt out of Spanish succession tax and be careful - there can be adverse indirect tax consequences from making an election – so take qualified advice. Do I need separate wills for Spain and England? This depends on: your family make-up; the nature, value and location of your assets; how the assets are owned and who you would like to receive them. Since the new Regulation there are compelling reasons for having your English and Spanish wills drafted by a single English cross-border specialist who can advise on the succession and taxation of

your worldwide estate. The reasons include: • UK and Spanish probate processes can be administered simultaneously, saving time and money; • Continuity of planning and advice; • UK solicitors are better qualified to advise on UK succession law than Spanish lawyers; • The UK Solicitor’s Regulation Authority, ensures accountability; • UK solicitor’s hold £2m compulsory insurance; • Drafting in a language you understand; • No compatibility or inadvertent revocation issues. Be guided by your cross-border specialist, because sometimes a single worldwide will is best and sometimes (rarely) a ‘foreign’ will drafted by an overseas lawyer is sensible. Does my will need to be drafted by a Spanish lawyer to be valid? No. Spain signed the 1961 Hague Convention on the mutual recognition of wills, meaning English wills are formally valid in Spain. Does my Spanish will need to be registered in Madrid? No, this is another common misconception. Will Brexit affect my will? No. A Brexit will make no difference to who gets what when you die, because the UK opted out of the Regulation, meaning the UK is already treated as a state outside the EU for succession purposes. The only difference a Brexit would make would be that the UK could not, in future, opt in to the Regulation.

For further information contact the author Charlotte Macdonald, or Daniel (Dan) Harris or Simon Lofthouse in the cross-border unit by email international@stoneking.co.uk or by telephone on + 44 (0) 1225 337599.

Great Britain destined for an eruption of chaos and disaster LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT

IN my opinion the UK is a tinderbox waiting for a flint. I am firmly convinced that some event will occur that will cause the whole, up to now suppressed anger and frustration, to erupt into a conflict that will bring unprecedented, disaster and chaos onto the streets of our once great country. It is of course virtually impossible to predict what will ignite this. It may have already happened with the tragic murder of Jo Cox. It appears her alleged killer was a right-wing fanatic, who disagreed with her views on immigration and so called Islamophobia. Apparently

THE UK: Is a tinderbox waiting for a flint.

she had been exposed to other threats and suspicion of stalkers in recent weeks, so this maniac is most definitely not a one-off. It may be triggered by a close-run vote to stay in the EU. Disgruntled Brexit fanatics could well take to the streets to voice their disapproval. One mad neo-Nazi running amok in a predominantly Muslim area with a Kalashnikov is also, to my mind, an extremely possible scenario that could also spark a confrontation. Bearing in mind that up to now all these types of attacks have been perpetrated by Islamic extremists on the ‘infidels,’ I think this occurrence is probably the most likely of all. Another of Leapy’s ‘dangerous rants,’ I hear the dissenters crying out. Well, be that as it may. I have been accused of ranting on numerous occasions over my 30 years as a colum-

nist and subsequent events have very often silenced the scorners and disbelievers of my alleged scaremongering. Not that I would be in any way presumptuous enough to compare my eloquence or intelligence to that of the great, sadly maligned statesman Enoch Powell, but I do pride myself in having at least one thing in common. I refuse to live with my head stuck firmly in the sand and an aura of misguided optimism floating around my hind quarters. I simply cannot understand why there was such an outcry about the UKIP poster of untold thousands of immigrants crossing European borders. To me a picture paints a thousand words! Keep the faith. Would BREXIT affect your holiday? Christina Sharp GLOBELINK INTERNATIONAL christina@globelink.co.uk.

YOU’RE probably suffering from EU referendum fatigue, but with referendum results tantalisingly close, Globelink just wanted to reassure their customers that whether Britain votes IN or OUT, your Globelink travel insurance policy remains in force and you can travel, or purchase your next policy, in total confidence that you are covered as usual. Some leading travel organisations have been as gloomy about the prospects of Brexit as our June weather. A recent report from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) predicted possible increased costs facing UK holidaymakers if Brexit leads to a deterioration in sterling value, making foreign currency destinations more expensive. ABTA also flagged an exit vote may mean changes in EU-originating regulations that benefit EU travellers.

BREXIT: In deep water or high and dry? This includes the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which provides access to local state healthcare throughout the EU for EU residents. But be warned, Referendum aside, the EHIC is no substitute for travel insurance. You won’t be covered for any emergency private medical treatment, repatriation, or additional ex-

penses like a relative staying with you. It’s very common for costs to spiral into thousands if you need hospital admission, or a doctor escort home, so stay travel smart and don’t skimp on decent travel insurance. This will cost you a tiny fraction of what you might have to fork out if

you or a loved one are ill or injured abroad. Globelink provide £1,000,000 of emergency medical and repatriation cover, and at the risk of tempting fate, they have never had a claim exceed that level. Since 1996, Globelink have provided travel insurance to 1,000,000 customers living in the EU, and the

company is now well into its 20th anniversary year. Their priority is delivering personal customer service and quality, cost-effective products. Since 2009, 62 per cent of their customers were repeat purchasers and in 2015 this rose to 68 per cent. Globelink would like to thank all of their Spain-based customers for their loyalty; these customers represent a whopping 20 per cent of their client base. Although staff members confess to feeling particularly envious when they receive calls and emails from people telling them how much they are enjoying the sun and perhaps a long, cool drink…especially when Blighty faces its wettest June on record. Globelink Travel Insurance: for people living in Spain and all other EU countries. For an instant quote and to arrange cover securely online visit: www.globelink.co.uk. Your policy and emergency assistance card will be delivered immediately by email. Call +44 1353 699 082 or our Spanish link line 966 265 000.

Welsh dragons, lost lions and dark horses By Matthew Elliott Jamie Vardy

A FEW shaky starts, some entertaining upsets, a fluffed penalty, and mass rioting: despite concerns that the new 24 team format might wreak havoc at the bookies, Euro 2016 is shaping up to be a fine tournament with no firm favourites staking out a lead and plenty of underdogs still capable of throwing a spanner in the works. Minnows Northern Ireland were jubilant in defeat having contained Germany to a 1-0 win which, coupled with Turkey’s victory over the Czech Republic, saw Martin O’Neill’s men glide through to the last 16 with a third place finish. The green and white army clocked up their best international performance since reaching the World Cup quarterfinals in 1958, defeating Czechoslovakia in the process, when they joined other home nations England and Wales in the knockout phases. With Gareth Bale on fire, averaging a goal a game, and backed up by his unheralded countrymen playing their hearts out, Wales charged to the top of Group B, ahead of England, with a 3-0 de-

molition of a Russian side overshadowed by the violent antics of their highly trained ultras. Roy Hodgson incurred the wrath of fans and the FA with his controversial team selection against Slovakia, omitting captain Wayne Rooney, but saw his youthful team ensure their progress to the last 16 despite the disappointing 0-0 draw. With tournament hosts France, reigning champions Spain, World Cup winners Germany, and the ever present Italy all combining moments of fearsome play with glaring weaknesses, the field is wide open and the majority of finalists

will fancy their chances of reaching the Stade de France on July 10. While Bale has stolen the limelight from his fellow Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo nevertheless managed to hog some of the attention with his narcissistic antics, criticising Iceland for their defensive play, looking petulant in training, and somewhat amusingly missing a penalty during his bid to become the first player to score in four consecutive championships. With Greece showing in 2004 that a tight team effort can pull off the unlikeliest of upsets, and Wales proving more than the Gareth Bale show, the knockout phases look set to be determined by grit, heart, style and spirit, with the doubtless appearance of ‘lady luck’ sure to have fans on the edge of their seats.

OPINION & COMMENT

www.euroweeklynews.com

Let me decide Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man I LIKE choice, freedom of choice really. But I’m finding it harder and harder to have that freedom. I’ve had to change passwords two or three times lately because someone decided that it wasn’t ‘strong’ enough. It wasn’t for my bank account or anything that I considered needed one of my super-duper secret passwords. The thing is it should be my choice. If someone can hack the CIA, FBI or Sony it doesn’t matter what my password is, if someone really wants to check my air miles they will find a way. I also don’t want to have to go through Facebook to find out about some product I may be interested in. I have a couple of apartments that I rent out for short lets to holidaymakers and I’ve been doing it for 12 years and never had a problem. I’m now being told that they have to be registered. This is no problem as the income has always been declared but some of the other stuff is nuts. We have to have air conditioning or be fined. Why? We advertise and inform there’s no air conditioning so whoever books makes a choice, air con or not.

But there are now laws in place that are so ridiculous they are almost un-policeable. You now have to register every person that stays with the police. It is reckoned there are about 80,000 apartments being rented. That’s a lot of people being registered and a lot of extra work for the police. People have to have a choice. If they want to stay in a hotel in one room that’s up to them. If they want an apartment and to self-cater that should be up to them and if they want to stay in an apartment that doesn’t have air con that’s up to them too. These new rules have been brought in, as far as I understand, because of lobbying by the hotels. So, does every hotel room now have to have air con? Because I know for a fact that they don’t. It seems the whole world now knows what I want and what’s best for me and actually they don’t. I don’t want to have to give my email address, age and sex just to get past the first page of a shopping site and if I do decide to look on Amazon I don’t want them emailing me three or four times to ask if I’m still interested. My choice was not to buy thank you Mr Amazon. I feel like I’m being chased around the shop by a sales person. IT’S MY CHOICE, GO AWAY! I heard some bad news this week. The guy who owned the Odeon chain died. His funeral will be on Monday at 2:10, 4:20 and 8:40.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) A mistake seems a small thing until someone notices it. Although you feel that they are making a mountain out of a molehill, it still leaves a nasty feeling. Get out and do something completely different at the weekend. Not only will it blow the cobwebs away, but it will also put in perspective any negative thoughts.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) As someone is not showing the required amount of interest in your activities, you need a plan. Telephoning them and pointing out what you have achieved is one way, but it's not cool. Getting a few people together

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) By using your intuition midweek, you will be able to solve a small problem at the weekend. Thinking ahead sometimes seems a waste of time to you because circumstances have a way of changing, but it makes sense to put in a bit of extra effort if you are able to avoid aggravation.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) The need to be popular midweek could see you veer off track on a business matter. You have been warned and will be able to avoid it if you wish. Do not underestimate how much hassle a wrong move could cause you. On the domestic front, you are able to fully relax and enjoy good company.

Keep fighting the good fight MY wife and I, as owners of a property in La Siesta, are extremely grateful for the interest Euro Weekly News has taken with regards to what has been happening over so many years at Calle Bach and Calle Elgar. John Smith listened to what the problem was, and took action so that Gemma Quinn contacted us and saw for herself the rubbish being dumped in our area, and this resulted in a very welcome front page article. In the past we have seen rats and all kind of vermin, chemicals, oil and general dumping which is very bad for the health of children, people and animals. We believe that the articles in EWN will encourage the town hall to recognise their responsibility and to take action to make this a healthy and attractive place again. Please, EWN, follow the situation until our part of La Siesta becomes a nice place where everybody can walk and children can play. Fred de Jong

Candy man ISN’T nostalgia a wonderful thing? I was reading Colin Bird’s article in EWN’s June 15 newspaper remembering what London Airport used to be like. In 1960 I was in the RAF stationed at Hendon in North London. One of my tasks was to go to London Airport to collect compassionate cases which had flown in from all over the world and transport them to one of London’s main line stations. In those days, London Airport consisted of a few Nissen huts located next to the old A4. One day, whilst I was waiting, Sammy Davis Junior came out of arrivals, saw me in uniform and said “Oh! Have you come to get me?” I said “No but I would love your autograph.” Needless to say, he gave it to me. I wonder if any other readers remember LAP with its few Nissen huts? Peter Simpson, Granada

Street wise I HOPE you don’t mind but I thought I would bring this incident to your readers’ attention. My wife and I were walking on Marina Baixa Avenue in Finestrat when a white saloon four-door car pulled up alongside us with two men dressed in civilian clothing. One of them then showed us his police ID card with his photograph on it and then asked to see our passports. I said I didn’t carry them

Rants and rambles I HAVE been residing in Murcia for almost a year and one of the highlights of my week is to collect my copy of the Euro Weekly on Thursdays and enjoy breakfast reading your excellent coverage of what’s going on locally and internationally. I also enjoy the many and varied contributions from all your columnists barring one. His name appears to be Leapy Lee. His strap line is ‘others think it, Leapy Lee says it,’ but I would be very interested in hearing how many other readers agree with my observations. I could mention other articles that he has written which I find totally abhorrent but will concentrate on last week’s. In his piece he asks why Gordon Brown is telling us what to do on Sky News. This was wholly incorrect as I watched the piece on television and it was a nicely put together piece of history, which was in steep contrast to some of the threatening rhetoric that has been apparent in most ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ lives thus far. Not content with calling our ex-prime minister egotistical and disillusioned, he then turns his vitriol to Eddie Izzard who he describes as a pathetic idiot. What justifies his remarks against Eddie Izzard I have no idea! Is it because he is openly a cross-dresser or is it that he has run 27 marathons in 27 days raising in excess of £1,000,000 (€1,298,289) for charity? I enjoy other contributions in your newspaper because, although controversial, they are presented with intelligence, which, for me, ‘Leapy’ fails to achieve. Malcolm Le Gassick, Murcia

with us and he then asked us what hotel we were staying at, assuming us to be tourists, so he would take us to get our passports from our room to check our ID. I informed them that we lived here and, smelling a rat, asked him, after telling my wife to get a pen and notebook from her bag, could I see his ID again? He said why? So I replied that I would like to make a note of his police number to check all was well. That comment freaked them out and the car took off like an episode of Starsky and Hutch (giving my age away there) not to be seen for dust, however, I did manage to get the registration number. I have reported all this to the police for which they were very appreciative

governing party capable of kicking some doors down I might find some common ground with Ian but we do not have that person or party! The EU ideal of a free market and political harmony was and is a good idea, but sadly it’s a bit like the old saying ‘communism is a great idea, the only problem with it is the communists.’ My point is the EU is no longer the pure ideal it once was, it is now a politically driven entity by career politicians who earn vast sums of money. A certain Labour leader who lost his chance at being the PM was sent to Brussels as a euro commissioner. It was reported that almost €500,000 per year was the remuneration package. Please do not tell me that this level of income does not ‘corrupt’ a politician’s political ideals when carrying out his duties ‘for us,’ his electorate! Robert Caley

Stay neutral HELLO all. I, a Sherwood Ranger, and comrades were presented to our Colonel in Chief the Queen Mother. Now, having quoted that fact and other things that I have done, does not qualify me to try to persuade people to stay or leave the EU, so why do people say for instance, ‘my grandfather shot and ate three elephants before midday’ that they are entitled to cast a slur on others that do the same. Tips for a stress-free summer S UMME R m a y n o t b e a s tre s s free idyll for everyone. Whilst many come to Spain to enjoy the relaxed way of life, for others it has become a fast-paced lifestyle, struggling to find the right balance between work, rest and play and there can be no harder time to find the balance between work and enjoying the regular fiestas than in the summer. But every time we stay late at work, or have an extra drink at a party or fiesta, it puts additional pressure on our bodies. This, in particu l a r, c a n a ff e c t ad ren al glands and lead to adrenal fatigue which can cause everything from weight gain to insomnia and mood swings. With the lives of many becoming ever more stressful, there are some simple steps you can take to help strike a balance: • Breathe correctly: This is a s imple t h i n g t h a t m a n y d o n o t think a b o u t b u t st r e s s o ften changes the way we breathe and how de e p l y a n d e ff e c tiv e ly w e

THERAPEUTIC PRACTICE: Yoga or meditation helps to calm your body. breathe can impact muscles and overall health. If you don’t breathe correctly it can lead to neck ache and tension headaches so be con-

scious and aware of your breathing. • Try pink salt: Too much salt c a n be ha rmful but a c e rta in

amount is necessary to maintain the body’s water balance. Try Himalayan pink salt as it contains small amounts of other valuable

minerals which can help support adr enal f unct i on and bone strength. • Cal m st art : Hi t t i ng t he snooze button on the alarm in the morning and falling back to sleep can deny the body of the time it needs to wake up and therefore causes confusion in the stress hormone. Instead of hitting snooze for 20 minutes, try getting up and spending that 20 minutes doing something for yourself such as practising yoga or meditating to get your body calm and prepared for the day. • Go for green tea: When we feel tired or drained we reach for coffee to give ourselves an energy boost but this high dose of caffeine and other stimulating substances found in coffee can cause the body to make more stress hormones. Try opting for green tea i nst ead t hat has a nat ur al substance called L-theanine, that has been found to have a relaxing effect on the mind, reduces anxiety, and helps with focus.

Challenge of obesity THE Global Nutrition Report for 2016 has reported that every country is facing a ‘ ser i ous publ i c heal t h challenge’ from malnutrition. The study of 129 countries found one in three people suffer from malnutrition in some form. Malnutrition can take various forms from child stunting and wasting due to starvat i on or f r om bei ng overweight. While malnourishment is

normally associated with people not having enough to eat, hundreds of millions of people are now classed as malnourished because they ar e over wei ght wi t h t oo much sugar, salt or cholesterol in their blood. The authors of the report said while progress is being made in terms of children starving, they are now looking at the opposite end of the scale with soaring obesity levels.

Ask The Doctor

Brought to you by

Memory loss

SPECIALIST: Doctor Luis Perez Belmonte. This week a concerned husband has written to ask the doctor about his wife’s memory loss: DEAR doctor, For a few months now I’ve been worried about my wife. She seems to have become very forgetful and, although I know as we age our memories can suffer a bit, I think this could be something more serious. She’s 70 years old and in good physical health, but she has been forgetting things a lot recently. She doesn’t remember to go to her hairdresser’s after booking appointments, she loses things or puts them away in the wrong place then says I’ve hidden them, she forgets words when we’re talking and the other day she even got lost on the way to see our daughter, a trip she has made hundreds of times. When I try and suggest she sees a doctor to discuss these things she gets angry and says it’s just because she’s getting older but I’m not sure. What do you think? Will this get worse over time, or is there anything we can do to stop that happening? Should I force her to see a doctor even if she gets cross with me?

23 - 29 June 2016 / Axarquía - Costa Tropical

www.euroweeklynews.com

The doctor replied: Cognitive impairment is quite a common health problem as people get older. Occasional forgetfulness, memory loss and confusion which don’t affect basic daily activities don’t tend to point to anything more significant. In your wife’s case these incidents seem to be moderate as they are beginning to affect her normal life and they might gradually worsen over the next few years. In my opinion, she should be seen for evaluation by a specialist, who should order tests including a scan and blood tests and will probably prescribe a treatment to include medicine and therapy to improve memory and other cognitive functions. In many cases, the impairment is due to causes which are reversible with correct treatment, and if this is not the case and it is caused by a degenerative condition such as Alzheimer’s, treatment will still slow the process down. The only way to tell and treat the problem is to see a specialist for correct diagnosis through tests.

Go for a walk to lengthen your life J U ST a brie f, bris k w a lk, c a n a dd years to your life. Experts say that 15 minutes of daily exercise is enough for older adults to see big benefits to their health with this activity being linked to a 22 per cent lower risk of an early death. Researchers carried out a study on two groups of people to see if lower levels of exercise could be as beneficial as the recommended 150 minutes each week. One group of 1,011 French people aged 65 in 2001, were followed over a period of 12 years while the second, an international group, of 122,417 people aged 60, was followed over 10 years. Participants’ activity was measured in Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) minute s e a c h w e e k, a s s e s s ing the amount of calories used per minute of physical activity. The recommended levels of exercise equate to between 500 and 1,000 MET minutes every week.

GET WALKING: Just 15 minutes can be beneficial. Researchers found that the risk of death fell as the level of exercise increased and compared to those people who were inactive, older adults with low, medium and high activity levels

had a 22 per cent, 28 and 35 per cent l ower r i sk of deat h, r espect i vel y, showing that even smaller amounts of exercise can boost life expectancy and improve health.

STEM CELLS: Restorative cells give hope for sufferers of hypopituitarism.

Stem cell hope for premature ageing SCIENTISTS say they have successfully grown functioning pituitary cells in the lab from stem cells which could treat premature ageing disease. They said when the cells were transplanted to rats with a damaged pituitary gland, they restored hormone levels and helped to treat the rare

premature ageing condition known as hypopituitarism. They hope these results will pave the way for treating the human form of the disease. The pituitary gland helps keep us on an even keel and regulates growth and metabolism, producing hormones

which control other glands in the body. People with hypopituitarism have problems with this ‘master gland’ which means their brains are unable to produce or release enough of certain key hormones and this can lead to dwarfism in children and premature ageing in adults.

A TOP health expert has said the UK Government should teach parents on how to raise their children to prevent anorexia and obesity. The outgoing president of the Faculty of Public Health believes today’s children are being neglected by schools and bad parents and warned more needed to be done by the state to prevent future generations being crippled by obesity. Earlier this year David Cameron announced that he also believed all parents should take classes on how to bring up their children.

OPINION & COMMENT

Referendum decision day To suggest we will be unable to hold our own and thrive is insulting.

Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

AS this week’s EWN hits the streets, the British people are voting on their long term future. This time tomorrow, we will either still be a member of the EU or an independent sovereign country, making its own way in the world. All the arguments have been exhausted, with very few hard facts emerging from the debate. Scaremongering, personal insults and self interest have dominated the media in recent weeks, with very little attention being paid to the most important issue that this referendum throws up, whether we wish to remain a country ruled by an elite club of appointed overseers or claim back our independence and ability to make our own decisions. I fail to understand why

IN OR OUT?: British people are voting on their long term future. anyone who purports to be a lover of democracy could ever contemplate voting to stay in an organisation where new laws, directives, rules and regulations are drafted by an unelected, and

therefore unaccountable Commission. Economics, economics and economics has been the battle cry of the ‘in’ brigade. Of course the economy of our country is vitally impor-

tant, but to suggest that we will be unable to not only hold our own, but to thrive in a world where we are free to negotiate our own trade agreements is insulting nonsense.

In my view, the reason that there has been so much desperation on the part of the EU to bring us to heel, is because the vested political and economic interests of this undemocratic club realise just how influential our decision today will be, and that an ‘out’ vote could very well mark the end of the EU as we know it and the derailment of the aptly named, gravy train. It is an irony that in the event of a British exit, the EU will have to make sweeping and fundamental changes to the way it does business, in order to survive. Changes that we have been unable to help bring about in 43 years of membership. This is not a ‘Little Englander’ mentality, but a vote to leave ‘Authoritarian Europe.’

I hope that Jo Cox’s killer is mad and not just evil Credit Garry Knight flickr

John Smith Random thoughts... IT’S one thing to throw an egg at John Prescott, it’s another to be so blinded by hatred to shoot and stab your local MP as happened on June 16 to mother of two Jo Cox in her constituency of Batley and Spen in West Yorkshire. I hope that the alleged killer, identified as 52-year-old local man Thomas Mair is diagnosed as a lunatic, because if he isn’t and he did commit this outrageous murder then it doesn’t say a great deal for humanity if he is classed as ‘normal’ or simply ‘evil’. Personally, I’ve never been in favour of the death penalty, Too many people have been cleared of murder, years after the event (and can’t be resurrected), and to some extent it brings society down to the same level as the killer. Having said that however, what’s the point of keeping him imprisoned for the

rest of his life when there’s little chance of him being released back into society as a useful and welcome member? It’s difficult to know what to think but one thing for sure is that despite the waste of this relatively young woman’s

life, some good must emerge. There’s always an outpouring of sympathy when a tragedy like this occurs but are they just crocodile tears with little good coming out of the bad, hopefully not. This is the first murder of an MP

The European Parliament.

And they think it’s all over BY the time that this edition of Euro Weekly News is published, the die will have been cast in the Brexit referendum and the Spanish General Election will be on its way to being completed. These are perhaps two of the most important ballots to affect expatriates in Spain and to some extent the result of one could well affect the result of the other. Now that we can’t be accused of trying to act as scaremongers or even influence anyone, we at Euro Weekly News hope most sincerely that the vote is in favour of remaining within the European Union. Some very intelligent and committed people want to see Britain leave the EU but their passion, whilst genuine and impressive, simply cannot hide the fact that no-one has any idea what the result would be in the event of an exit. Perhaps it will be the saviour of Britain as some predict or maybe it will be a disaster which will cost us all dear. One way of making money quickly is to take everything you own to a casino and placing it all on black or red and within a matter of just seconds, chance will either see you distraught and bankrupt or delighted and rolling in money depending on a single roll of the ball. The only difference between this and the referendum is that it won’t be so clear cut and it will take a lot longer to be resolved and may have the added distraction of a very worried Gibraltar.

Stress free holiday rentals, part two John Graham The property expert

FOR EWN readers on the Costas and Mallorca planning to rent out their property this summer, here’s part two of my Top 12 Tips on preparing your property for holiday rentals. • Have an information pack: Renters need to be aware of community rules, put a copy in the property info pack. Common problems are towels on balconies, loud music, late night noisy parties, improper use of the pool, etc., if not you could have serious problems with the community. Also put in instructions on how to use appliances, security alarm, mandos, etc. and emergency telephone numbers for you or the agent, doctor, chemist, hospital, 24/7 repairs, etc.

PREPARE YOUR PROPERTY: Making sure everything is in tip top condition for renters. • Set the rules: When advertising inform renters on maximum occupancy and if pets or smoking is allowed. • Charge the right price: You need to decide what price to charge per week throughout the summer. If handling bookings and advertising yourself go online and check what similar

properties charge. If using an agent, ask them to give you an idea of rental rates that you can charge and still be competitive. Don’t forget rental income is not all profit, you need to cover the costs like agent’s fee, or your advertising costs, maintenance, cleaning, laundry, tax, insurance, and other costs in

New builds needed

FUTURE HOUSING NEEDS: Construction in Spain should see a growth in employment. By John Smith

A REC E NT st u d y o n th e need fo r f u t u r e h o u s in g within Spain, prepared by J os é L u i s Su á r e z I ES E Business School’s Professor of Financial Management, estimates that a large number of new homes will need to be built every year until 2025, wh e n t h e p r i ce o f housing will return to 2007 levels. According to Professor Suarez there will need to be

about 100,000 new homes constructed each year until 2020, and then until 2025, this number will need to be increased to 140,000 homes per year. Prior to the boom to bust years, the average number o f h o u s e s b u ilt a v era ge d 250,000 annually but this s h o t u p to w ell o ve r 500,000 but then dropped to just 75,000 per annum for the last eight years. Assuming his estimates are correct then there should be a growth in employment,

a number of new properties available and eventually a steady return to pre-recession prices.

your rental prices. • Prepare your property: Remember to have your property in top condition as it has to stand up to constant rental wear and tear throughout the summer so check all appliances and plumbing are in working order. Ideally, have all your appliances serviced before you start

renting: air conditioning systems/filters, power supply, kitchen appliances, gas supply/gas bottles, automatic gates, garage doors, pool equipment, fuse boxes and TV channels. Health and safety rules apply and you’ll need to check smoke detectors and fire alarms work. Hire a plumber to check toi-

lets, baths, showers, sinks and the boiler are all working and water pressure is correct. If you have a private pool check pump, etc. are working. • Avoid late payment of utility bills: Make sure all utility bills e.g. water, gas, electricity, community fees, etc. are paid on time. Standing order is best but double check payments are made when due, it’s surprising how many properties have utilities cut off due to the bank not paying on time. • Eliminate risk: Make sure you take out special property insurance covering you for holiday rentals. Common problems and claims are bath overflows damaging apartments on lower floors and damage to community property. John Graham is a Fellow of The Architecture & Surveyors Institute. Garden handover guide Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

A CHANGE of gardeners often results in a lack of continuity in the development and maintenance of a carefully nurtured garden. To avoid this try to ensure the outgoing and incoming gardeners meet on site in your garden for a handover. The following checklist is useful for an effective changeover. 1. The extent to which the owner likes to be involved or whether they leave the gardener to do what they think is best. 2. The most important owners likes and dislikes in respect of the garden. 3. The current agreed programme for development/improvement, for example new terraces, flower beds, rockeries etc. 4. Any urgent jobs planned for the next months. 5. Recently planted plants and their needs until established. 6. Provisional planting plans for the next autumn/winter including cuttings required for propagation. 7. The regular programme of watering and feeding plants, trees and lawns. 8. The normal schedule of weeding, hoeing and weed killing (if allowed), areas normally killed and with what.

CHANGE GARDENER: Ensure the outgoing and incoming gardeners meet to discuss your garden. 9. The normal frequency and height for cutting the lawn. 10. The range of machinery available and servicing arrangements. 11. How the watering system works and the normal seasonal settings. Who to contact if there are problems with the electronic controls on a complex system. 12. The normal programme for the winter clean up in January/February. 13. Facilities for disposal of gar-

DIY vertical garden tips VERTICAL gardens have become very fashionable over recent years and are allowing everyone, no matter where they live, a chance to produce their own scents and colours, herbs and even vegetables while hiding any ugly vertical walls. Although there are very high-tech projects out there likely to cost an arm and a leg, you can actually make your very own vertical garden in the smallest of spaces (even a tiny balcony) on a low budget and even by recycling! One idea for those who need an orderly, uniform look is to buy strips of plastic guttering, which can be fixed to the wall at any height you like. Another great idea is those hanging shoe/accessory racks often found in the shops. You can either choose one with plastic-lined pockets or line them yourself and plant directly inside, or you can pop suitable sized plant pots in and plant inside those.

den waste (compost heap, etc). 14. The owner’s policy for organic/ecological versus inorganic fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides. 15. Programme for pruning, watering and feeding fruit trees. 16. If there are any vegetables planted that the gardener will be expected to look after. 17. Location and types of spring and summer bulbs to ensure they are not disturbed or damaged.

18. Owner’s desire, fancy, for displays of annuals in containers or beds. 19. Owner’s budget for new plants and agreed replantings. 20. Ownership of hedges and owners policy for height and depth of hedges. 21. Owner’s pet plants and names. 22. Areas of terraces and paths regarded as gardener’s territory for sweeping up.

23. Is the garden eco-friendly or are chemicals still permitted? 24. Where tools and chemicals can be stored securely. 25. Who’s responsible for repair of steps, paths, terraces, walls, repainting of terrace walls, garden furniture, etc. Is there a regular handy man as well as a gardener? Best of luck if you are involved. © Dick Handscombe June 2016.

Natural instincts

Jack really doesn’t like loud noises!

TRAINING of dogs does not give the end product. A dog’s natural instinct plays a vital role. Man first domesticated the dog because he had so many useful instincts. When we think that man has used the dog for many thousands of years for his own benefit, it’s very difficult to understand why so few people can differentiate between instinct and intelligence. Instinct is an urge from within which makes a dog act in a certain way and has no connection with intelligence. A dog’s first instinct is to survive. When born a pup squirms about until it finds a teat and then sucks, no intelligence or learning by association plays a part in this process. Maternal instinct tells

JACK: Is fit, fast and afraid of loud noises.

BASIC INSTINCT: Dogs, like humans, are born with natural instincts that are not taught. the female to clean up the foetal membrane, etc. and stir the puppy into action by licking it. This is not taught, she hasn’t seen another female do this. Most instincts provide pleasure and because it associates the action with pleasure the instinct grows stronger with usage. In my opinion instinct is either there or it’s not and it can be strengthened, weakened, or diverted. It might lie dormant but once developed it can never be weakened again.

A dog’s obsession for chasing balls can be controlled by training and providing other energy outlets in the same way. If a young dog is diverted the first time he chases a car he may give up the idea, but if allowed to chase cars the hunting instinct becomes stronger and it will be very difficult, even impossible to cure the habit. Instinct covers survival, maternal, hunting, guarding, pack, and self-preservation. Self-preservation makes

dogs furtive and afraid of the unfamiliar. In my opinion, nervousness in dogs is one of the common causes of problems in dogs today. Nearly all cases where children have been attacked by dogs and owners bitten by their own dog arise from nervousness, it’s afraid it’s going to be hurt and attacks first. The self-preservation instinct has been weakened by simply breeding from bold dogs rather than nervous ones but has never been entirely removed.

Budgies make great buddies By Matt Ford THOSE looking to keep birds could do far worse than checking out budgies, arguably the world’s most domesticated bird and well-suited to the Spanish heat, being native to Australia. It’s easy to think that caged birds don’t have enough space, and sometimes this may be the case but remember that by nature small birds do tend to like enclosed spaces to call home. Provided they have regular, ideally daily, flying time outside the cage, a relatively confined space actually makes budgies feel secure, but also do well in larger cages and outdoor aviaries. Either way, the cage should have some horizontal bars in it to allow climbing, meaning many round

designs are unsuitable, while bars should be no wider than 12mm apart to prevent escape. Toys, swings, ladders, seed sticks and mineral supplements, such as cuttlefish, will all help to keep your bird busy and alleviate boredom, while covering the cage with a cloth at night will encourage your budgie to settle down to sleep. You should provide a bath for your bird, either fixed to the outside of the cage or a shallow bowl placed inside the cage, although some may prefer to be sprayed with tepid water instead. A good-quality budgerigar or parakeet mix makes a good basic diet. Small pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables may also be given as treats, and fresh drinking water should always be available. Budgies prefer to be kept in pairs or small groups, and can learn to mimic sounds and speech, making them friendly and cheerful companions for all age groups.

BIRD BRAIN: Budgies are intelligent, social birds.

NICOLA and her husband Ray have moved countries several times for Ray’s job as a project director in construction. They’ve lived in the UK, Sweden, Switzerland with Jack travelling with them and now they’re set to stay in Spain for a couple of years. While moving with the family doesn’t seem to bother Jack, he has become increasingly nervous about loud noises. Settling him into a new home and new neighbourhood takes a little while. Each time he finds a safe place where he decamps when noises get a little loud, city living is tough. Now they live in the campo he seems happier, but still keeps a safe place just in case.

Nicola and Ray prefer for him to be cared for at home when they travel and insist the sitter joins them for a day or two before they leave so that Jack can meet them and relax into their company. It also helps them keep their home safe while they are away, empty properties can be such a draw to thieves and opportunists these days House-sitting can be a win-win for both parties, free house and pet-sitting and the experienced and checked sitters get free accommodation! Pet therapies CUTTING-EDGE treatments once reserved for humans may soon be standard in vet science, as changing tides of pet ownership spark a boom in sophisticated biotech therapies for animals. Dublin-based firm Nexvet has successfully trialled a therapeutic antibody to treat pain, and other companies are working on bone mar-

row transplants, cell therapies and cancer vaccines. Nexvet acquires antibodies used in human medicines and alters their structure so they become effective for cats or dogs. They’re now investigating anti-cancer treatments involving the blocking of a protein called PD-1, an approach which has shown great promise in people.

Mid-life makeover By Matt Ford THE Maserati Quattroporte sports limousine has been given a facelift for 2016 which is now on sale, featuring an updated exterior, new features to boost efficiency, and the latest in-car technology. Outside, the new car boasts subtly restyled bumpers, a new angular front grille with vertical chrome slats, and a matte black body trim, offering a more refined look. A new infotainment system comprising an 8.4 inch touchscreen controlled by a rotary knob mounted on the centre console means less buttons on the dashboard, meaning the cabin is cleaner and less cluttered.

Maserati say that the new variant is both more potent and fuel efficient compared with the outgoing model, with a choice of turbocharged diesel and petrol V6s or a turbocharged petrol V8 offering improved straight-line performance. Aerodynamic efficiency is 10 per cent better, thanks to a new electric air shutter which opens and closes parts of the front grille, plus a power upgrade for the base 3.0-litre petrol V6, which now provides 345bhp and an improved 062mph time of 5.5 seconds. While the bonnet tech used cameras mounted in the grille of the Discovery Vision Concept to project an image of the road surface onto the windscreen, the new kit combines video footage from the existing surround-view apparatus, which comprises cameras located on the wing mirrors and back of the car, with that shot by a third unit attached to the towed vehicle. The resulting hybrid image, is then projected onto an electronic rear-view mirror, aiding drivers when reversing or overtaking.Transparent Trailer will probably be offered as an aftermarket item within a couple of years.

GINS weekly golfing report Los Moriscos Friday June 10 NOT only did Pepe Gil return a wonderful score of 42 points, but he and his playing partners must have raced round the course since they were back in the club house in under threeand-a-half hours. Unfortunately, the three ball behind them took a lot longer! Morris endured something of a disastrous day, and in the end he probably wanted to go home and lie in a darkened room. According to his playing partners, poor Morris hit just about every tree on the course, with the ball variously thwacked out of bounds, bouncing back to him, or disappearing into the blue yonder never to be seen again. Being made of true Yorkshire grit, however, Morris will undoubtedly be back! Individual Stableford Ladies 1st Neilma Jary Hcp29 2nd Claire Gray Hcp26

Baviera Tuesday June 14 Arguably the second hottest day of the year so far with the thermometer registering 37 degrees, as a hot wind exacerbated the situation. Nonetheless, 30 intrepid GINS members set off to enjoy an individual stableford game. A few had buggies which definitely helped, and those who really felt the heat sensibly retired from the course, although most finished and there were some creditable scores. The overall winner with 37 points was Graeme Birch, who won some pro shop vouchers to go with the ones he bagged a few weeks ago. Well done Graeme for a great score in the heat, but then again you are used to it.
