Peace in our town

No progress BUSINESS associations in Velez-Malaga have complained that the town’s centre and historical area are being

neglected, and have spoken out in the hopes that they can jolt the authorities’ memories. See page 2

Blue or Q? ALMUÑECAR leaders have been quick to respond to criticism from the opposition over the local lack of blue flags on beaches, by explaining its reasons to opt for another quality certification system. See page 6

Savvy looters THE mayor of Torrox spoke out this week after the municipal storehouse was burgled and three vans pinched to transport the loot and later abandoned,

saying he was sure the culprits had inside knowledge, and promising to up security measures at other public buildings. See page 7

Knowledge is all By Matthew Elliott Motril became the latest member of an exclusive grouping of global ports, considered the gateway to regions of such cultural significance as to warrant a visit from the fabled Peace Boat. An historic liner carrying more than 1,000 passengers, which has toured the world for decades promoting human rights and cultural dialogue, the Peace Boat chose Motril as its only Spanish destination this year, docking on May 18. The day-long stopover allowed the diverse entourage to explore Axarquia’s most beautiful sites, with an imperial fleet of 25 buses taking the adventurers to Nerja, recently an-

nounced Spain’s most charming coastal town, and gorgeous neighbour Frigliana. Representing an international non-governmental organisation formed in Japan in order to bring the country back into the family of nations after decades of isolation spurred by the Second World War, the Peace Boat is currently on its 91st global voyage, having departed from Yokohama in April and set to return to Kobe in July. Over the years the Peace Boat has raised awareness and funds for landmine and chemical weapons victims, and even endured a grenade attack launched by Somali pirates in 2010. With plenty of time to pre-

HIGH fire risk zones including Nerja, Frigiliana and Competa have been provided with updated detailed maps and information on their areas to ensure emergency services and fire brigades have access to the best information out there to aid them in their invaluable work. See page 8

pare, Motril’s local authorities were quick to capitalise on the influx of guests and organised a stunning variety of cultural activities and a craft market for them to enjoy. Although the Peace Boat has now set sail for Lisbon, preparing for a long voyage to the Americas, its appearance paid a fitting tribute to Axarquia’s well-deserved place in an elite list of global attractions. Local residents will be well aware that one day simply isn’t

enough time to explore the region, and given Nerja and Frigiliana’s charm will have left its mark on the Peace Boat, it’s likely some passengers will soon return for more.

Record-breaker ONCE again Malaga-Costa del Sol airport has broken its own record, registering more than four million passengers over the first

four months of this year. The busy travel hub looks set to smash through its annual goal well before the end of 2016. See page 12

VELEZ-MALAGA: Business associations expressed their discontent over the conditon of the historical centre. By Eleanor Hawkins BUSINESS associations from Velez-Malaga have expressed their discontent over the condition of the town’s historical centre, and in particular over pending projects in the area.

“After presenting numerous letters and holding meetings between town hall representatives, stressing projects which need to be carried out and could have been completed already with a little effort, we still see no progress and can only be-

lieve the authorities are not interested in this area,” the associations complained. They stressed that opening the market in San Francisco, for example, should be treated as an urgent measure and said they were concerned over an

apparent lack of diligence with regards to the future Lope de Vega Theatre, or pedestrianisation of the Plaza de San Francisco and Calle Poeta Joaquin Lobato, both of vital importance to help invigorate the area of the town.

REMAINING VALID?: European Union British Passport. By John Smith AS time passes and we get ever closer to the date of the referendum on British membership of the European Union, so the statements from each side become somewhat more hysterical, as former friends become future enemies in their passionate and often ignorant call for one side or the other. What is however clear is that those who want to see Britain out, have opinions on what might happen and pin their hopes on those opinions being correct. It doesn’t help that they are led by a triumvirate of some of the least popular Tory politicians, the bitter failed former leader who is Iain Duncan Smith, demoted and smarmy Michael Gove and intelligent yet accident-prone Boris Johnson. Admittedly on the other side are the Eton boys, supported in small measure by the Labour party and avidly on this one matter by the SNP, but they do seem to have two things in their favour. Almost everyone of

Almost everyone of note in international politics and economics has spoken in favour of Britain remaining with the Union and at least some of what they say is true, rather than sheer hypothesis.”

note in international politics and economics has spoken in favour of Britain remaining with the Union and at least some of what they say is true, rather than sheer hypothesis. Euro Weekly News, as its name suggests, rather likes Europe but there has been no censorship of any type in our newspaper so that writers, columnists and readers can ex-

press their opinions freely, regardless of which side of the vote they fall on, even if they are ineligible to actually vote because of the 15-year qualification period. As much as we like to think of a world in which everyone helps each other, when it comes to it, it will turn into every man for himself and to use an old cliché, is it better to be inside the tent looking out or inside the tent looking in? People dream of the good old days when Britain led the world and the map was coloured red, but forget that the wealth of the country was built on the back of slave labour, invasion and the cheap raw materials taken from the colonies. The picture that accompanies this article depicts a red (not good old blue) British Passport and if you look closely at the top, it says European Union in gold letters. If we leave when does that passport become invalid, and is Britain capable of printing and issuing 50 million new passports in order to allow our people to travel? Perhaps the cost to each individual will be enough to

clear the national debt! Everyone who does travel within Europe at the moment has the right to carry a free EHIC card which does guarantee an element of immediate emergency treatment within any member state. At least the insurance companies can enjoy the extra funds they will earn when that is no longer valid. In the interim period before all of the treaties are signed between the other 27 members of the Union, plus many other countries in the world, will we need visas to remain in Spain or nip over to France? Who knows, and also, will we need work permits and will we be allowed to continue to own businesses in Spain? The list of imponderable and unanswered questions is enormous, yet the decision to remain or leave the Union is being entrusted to the average man in the street whose main knowledge of voting is for a contestant in Britain’s Got Talent. Those who can vote need to really think about what is actually known, rather than what is fervently hoped for before casting their vote.

World crisis expert Chicken D Little has given a drastic warning that the sky will fall if the UK opts to leave the EU. Show me please the guesses and predictions of those who have a record for predicting events, such as the 2008 crash! It is time to leave the Titanic despite the assurances of its unsinkability and the fragility of our lifeboat. Harry Dowling

Over-hyped THERE is too much hype. Before expatriate Brits start packing their bags or getting ready to queue at the town hall for resident’s permits, just think that so far nobody knows what will or might happen. Peter Fieldman

Two cents FOR all the fury ignited by the Brexit debate, the really interesting part will come if the people choose to stay in. Will things just continue exactly as they are, or will the referendum be a catalyst for change? My money’s on the former. Gill

Water, water, everywhere By Matt Ford ALTHOUGH Axarquia is a notoriously dry area, it holds some 80 per cent of tropical fruit, such as mango and avocado, produced in Andalucia, placing significant pressure on the La Viñuela dam, the largest in the region. Now, the Junta de Andalucia regional government is exploring ways to reduce that strain, reserving the water in La Viñuela for human consumption, and relying on subsurface and recycled waste-

water to irrigate some 10,000 hectares of cultivated land. The possibility has already been mentioned to local communities, such as Algarrobo, home to 820 farmers with 754 hectares of land, where the plan would involve using water from the local water treatment plant, plus the River Algarrobo. Local environmental chief Jose Manuel Gil has described the proposal as “madness,” and aims to fight the measures. Gil points out that 23 cubic hectometres of water from La Viñuela are current-

ly set aside for agricultural use each year, with 22.5 cubic hectometres reserved for human consumption. He argues that irrigation has never exceeded 22.5 cubic hectometres, while the urban and rural populations of VelezMalaga, Rincon de la Victoria, Algarrobo, Torrox, Benamocarra, Benamargosa, Iznate, Cútar, El Borge, Almáchar, Totalán, Moclinejo and Macharaviaya, do not require more than 15 cubic hectometres, rendering the suggested initiative pointless.

Clear up project By Jill Pickering THE ever-increasing popularity of the countryside around Frigiliana, part of the Sierras Tejeda, Alhama and Almijara Natural Park, has a downside, the council has discovered, as it is resulting in more and more

rubbish being dropped by visitors. To combat this and raise awareness amongst the youngest residents of the village at the same time, a clear-up day was held on Wednesday May 18 on the banks of the Rio Higueron. Pupils from Enrique Gines

Volunteer to clean seabed DIVING group Buceo Nerja have organised a seabed cleaning operation in collaboration with the local council, which will take place on Saturday May 21. All are invited to take part, with volunteers required for scuba diving, kayaks, and picking up beach litter on foot. Divers will be divided into two groups of 20, each manning a boat, while kayakers will collect surface refuse and scrub coastal rocks clean. The remainder will be distributed between El Playazo, Torrecilla, Burriana, and Maro beaches, with a free picnic lunch laid on after the hard work is complete. The chicks, all about 10 days old, were goldfinches, greenfinches, serins and linnets. They were being offered for sale on the internet for about â‚Ź20 each, even though they are protected by the Berne Agreement for the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats and destroying their nests is strictly forbidden, especially during the breeding season.

LA HERRADURA: Doesn’t need a blue flag to prove its quality.

Waving the flag! FOLLOWING criticism from the Ciudadanos party, the council in AlmuñecarLa Herradura has wished to clarify the matter of its beaches’ flags and certificates. In 2012, the PP party has explained, the council decided to give priority to the ‘Q for quality’ beach evaluation system, run by the ICTE (Spanish Tourism Quality Institute). Great effort was put into getting San Cristobal and La Herradura beaches recognised under this system in 2012, and

they were followed the next year by Puerta del Mar and Velilla beaches. These certifications are renewed each year following examination by external inspectors. These inspectors ensure on site that the beaches all meet the necessary requirements for hygiene and safety, lifeguard services, user information on signs in accessible areas, cleaning and facility maintenance. These four beaches, the council stressed, are kept to the required stan-

dards as they are the most popular amongst both locals and visitors, as proved by surveys filled in during the year at tourist information points, where users are also invited to suggest improvements. “Blue flags are not the only sign of quality, our beaches are a tourist attraction and we believe the Q for quality system is our best choice to keep them in the best condition possible,” a council spokesman insisted.

SCUBA divers, marine biologists, surfers, fishermen and other seafaring aficionados from across Spain gathered in La Herradura over the weekend of May 13-15, in order to condemn the sorry ecological state of the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo natural area and demand better protection for marine environments in Spain. The ‘Concentracion Submarina’ event was organised by conservation action group Equilibrio Marino (Marine Equilibrium), who promote science-based solutions to con-

servation, with studies showing that new marine reserves explode into life within five years if protection is properly enforced. Faced with a lack of official resources, the group also say that diving ecotourism could act as an efficient policing tool, since poachers tend to be discouraged and pollution more easily detected if an area is popular with divers. They are now producing a documentary to highlight these issues, with the slogan: “A conservation revolution has begun. If you love the sea, join.”

Council storage looted BURGLARS made away with three vans full of loot, including large amounts of copper, from the municipal storage warehouse in Torrox on Saturday, May 14, before abandoning the vans in Malaga City where they were tracked down on Monday. Mayor Oscar Medina explained that the Guardia Civil and Local Police are investigating the case, and believe four or five people would have been needed to shift the amount of material taken. They had expected the vans to turn up as they were old and of little value, leading them to believe they were stolen simply for transport purposes. The culprits, the mayor said, obviously knew the warehouse on Llano de la Almazara and its security well as they not only managed to avoid the cameras but also removed the hard drive where recordings were saved, and painted over the municipal logos on the vans to avoid detection. “It was obviously a studied, premeditated action, they knew where they were going and what they were going to take,” Medina insisted. Coincidentally, over the last few weeks locks have been tampered with at other municipal buildings including the public library, the council offices at El Morche and two schools, although nothing appeared to be missing in those cases. The mayor said that due to these events, the council will be increasing surveillance and security measures at all council facilities.

forced to hand over their land to make space for the motorway, the nightmare continues. Altogether more than 3,400 owners saw some or all of their land expropriated for the A7, and while most of them accepted the price set

by the Ministry of Public Works and Development and, after a wait of between five and 10 years in most cases, received their money, the battle for interest, and for payment for the few who refused the initial offer, continues.

The matter is complicated further by the fact that under the Forced Expropriation Law, owners can demand interest on interest, which is exactly what a group of 350 people affected by the road have now announced their intention to do.

Updated fire maps given to mayors By Eleanor Hawkins AREAS at high risk of being affected by forest fire in Malaga Province, known as Interphase Zones, have been provided with updated maps of their areas bearing vital information to prevent and fight fires. The maps were presented to the mayors of Frigiliana, Nerja, Competa and other Costa del Sol towns and villages in Interphase Zones on Monday May 16 with important updates and improvements. For example, whereas the 2011 versions were on paper, the maps are now in digital format and linked to Google Earth.

Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo, Malaga delegate for the Junta de Andalucia regional government, explained that the mayors have all been provided with a CD containing geographic and cartographic information on their areas which provides extremely detailed knowledge of the location of populated areas, buildings, roads, accesses, infrastructure which can be used for evacuations and vulnerable points such as old peoples’ homes, schools, wooden homes or areas which are hard to reach. Manuals on how to prevent fire and what to do in the event of one breaking out were also distributed with the maps.

BONSAI CENTRE: Children discovered the beautiful world of the miniature trees.

Tiny hidden tree treasures revealed By Eleanor Hawkins SECOND year primary pupils from Almuñecar’s Virgen de la Antigua school didn’t have to go far this week to discover the beautiful, attractive world of the bonsai revealed at the local Garden Museum of the Bonsai. Guided by Jose Antonio Joya, the children

were introduced to a great variety of species from all over the world at the botanical centre, including, of course, those native to Granada Province and the Mediterranean coasts. Little known to many, the Almuñecar bonsai centre on Avenida de Andalucia displays more than 200 of the miniature trees in a 2,000 square metre area.

PARENTS of pupils at Garvayo Dinelli infant and primary school in Motril have reason to celebrate as the regional government has finally bent under pressure and agreed to keep the classes they have been fighting for running. Although the Junta de Andalucia regional government had announced that there would only be two class groups for three-year-

olds, the persistence of the parents, who even locked themselves inside the school in protest last month, did the trick and the lists of new pupils accepted for the 2016-2017 academic year include three classes. This means 18 children who there would have been no space for have finally been accepted at the school, much to the relief of their parents.

Grown at home A HANDFUL of home-grown magic mushrooms found in a rucksack a 23-year-old man was found carrying during a security check by provincial National Police officers has led to his arrest. The young man sparked the interest of the officers, who were carrying out random checks, and when asked about the 67 grams of mushrooms they found inside his rucksack admitted that they were hallucinogenic and he had grown them himself. Later checks allowed the officers to confirm that the offending fungi contained psilocybin, a natural drug which affects the central nervous system.

LOCAL fishermen are once again up in arms regarding the latest restrictions to commercial activities in the region, coupled with significant delays in payment and other deficiencies which have reduced a once-proud fleet of around 200 trawlers to little more than 50 in just a single decade. The latest remonstrations were concerned with the decision to ban fishing for octopus from September 2016, with the species accounting for 60 per cent of their income. Paradoxically, while European reports suggest that 93 per cent of Mediterranean fishing grounds are exhausted, fishermen from the port of Caleta de Velez are adamant that octopus catches have doubled in the last six years, up from 66,000 kilos in 2010 to 142,200 in 2015. FOR the first time ever, Malaga-Costa del Sol airport has registered more than 4,000,000 passengers during the first four months of this year even though they are usually the quietest ones.

4,069,493 passengers used the airport during the first four months of the year.

Altogether the airport dealt with 4,069,493 passengers from January 1 to April 30, which is 15.3 per cent more than the same months in 2015, AENA airport management has reported. Note the legal requirements for transfer of vehicle IF you have a UK or any other non-Spanish vehicle, whether it’s a car, motorbike, caravan, motor home or even a quad, then they should be transferred to Spanish plates. The plates are black lettering on a white background for both front and back. They show an ‘E’ for ‘España’ and then four numbers and three letters. EU regulations require that all vehicles must be registered, taxed and MOT inspected in the country where the vehicle is normally used. A non-Spanish vehicle can only remain in the country for a maximum of six months in any 12-month period. To avoid any penalties and inconvenience, here is some information to help you through the registration process and get you back to worry free motoring in Spain. THE REGISTRATION PROCESS EXPLAINED To complete the registration process you will need to have your ID documentation in order and get a Padron (proof of Spanish address) from your local town hall. The registration process normally takes about two weeks and is as follows: • Mechanical engineer’s report to ensure your vehicle is fit for Spanish roads. • MOT inspection at an approved ITV centre. Pre-book an appointment and save time. • Registration document or log book. • Payment of road taxes. • Spanish number plates. Once your vehicle has been approved for circulation and registration in Spain you will receive all the documentation; receipts for taxes, the Spanish number plates suitable for your vehicle and an ITV (MOT) sticker to be displayed on your windscreen. The sticker will also show the month and year of the vehicles next MOT due date.

WHAT IF MY VEHICLE FAILS THE SPANISH MOT? Before taking your vehicle to the local ITV (MOT) centre, take some time to check lights and indicators, tyre treads and pressures, that no dash warning lights are illuminated, and seat belts. If your vehicle fails the MOT, the centre will explain what is at fault in their report. You will need to remedy the fault before reapplying for a new MOT test. HOW LONG WILL MY VEHICLE BE OFF THE ROAD? You will only be without your vehicle for the duration of the MOT (ITV) test. If you pre-book, this normally takes about an hour. Once completed you will be given a document from the ITV that legally allows you to drive the car, as it states that you are in the process of re-registering your vehicle. Very convenient should you be stopped by the police. WILL I NEED TO CHANGE MY INSURANCE POLICY Normally, British insurers will only cover your vehicle for a period of three months whilst your car is outside of the UK. We recommend you obtain quotes for your Spanish registered vehicle before you start the registration process. In this way, your insurance will be ready to go as soon as registration is completed. Línea Directa can supply you with a fast and efficient quote for your vehicle, just call 902 123 309. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. per and cardboard containers, 14 used c lothe s c onta ine rs a nd s e ve n us e d cooking oil containers on the streets of the town. “For the last four years we have also been running a paper recycling service for schools and municipal buildings which has been very effective, and bars and restaurants in the centre can now join a ‘door to door ’ glass recyc ling proje c t to ma ke it e a s ie r for them,” Aragon said.

Next on the list of recycling-related goa ls i s t o pr ovi de speci f i c bi ns for recycling batteries and a ‘punto limpio’ r ecycl i ng poi nt whi ch t he council is currently looking for a site for. Finally, Aragon explained that the police and municipal cleaning service are on the lookout to ensure containers are put to their correct uses and no rubble or garden refuse are dumped in them.

THE state of the relatively new parquet flooring at the Fernando Ruiz Hierro sports complex in VelezMalaga has sparked complaints from the council’s Sports Department. Although the floor was only changed early last year, Sports councillor Maria Jose Roberto reported, it was laid on top of the old surface following orders from the former council team, which took no notice of warnings from the company that did the work of what could happen. Damp, inadequate materials and the bad state of the floor underneath caused swelling to parts of the wooden flooring, resulting in almost constant patch-up jobs having to be done by the municipal carpenters while a solution is sought.

Gardens are well worth a visit By Eleanor Hawkins

LA CONCEPCION: Gardens are gaining popularity.

MALAGA’S La Concepcion Botanical-Historical Gardens have been included in the TripAdvisor tourism website’s list of the best gardens in Spain, behind El Retiro in Madrid, Parque Guell in Barcelona and La Magdalena in Santander. The website places the gardens ninth on its 156 recommended things to do in Malaga, and

describes visiting the BIC (Cultural Heritage Site) as: ‘entering the most beautiful and important tropical garden in Europe. It is home to palm trees, bamboos, aquatic plants and an endless list of almost 1,000 exotic species. The botanical jewels blend with the monuments and historical aspects of the park which include a palatial home, little bridges, fountains, steps and even a museum.’

Roadworks are denied RESIDENTS of Cajiz have for years been complaining of the dangers of the access to the tiny village from the old N340 road and asking for something to be done about it, to reduce the accidents which happen there on a regular basis. Although the council approved a motion back in December and put in an official request with the Malaga Provincial Council for work to be done at the junction, it

was turned down due to a lack of funds. Provincial delegate Cristobal Fernandez explained that the council has had €3 million removed from the budget for this type of work, meaning there simply isn’t money available for the work. However, he said, it is vital to increase safety at the dangerous spot, and the authorities need to modify the budgets to allow for it.

A report on visitors’ opinions on the gardens after visiting La Concepcion revealed that 549 of the 636 people who gave their opinion classed it as excellent or very good. It is no surprise, therefore, that so far this year the gardens have received 22,010 visitors. Numbers increase every year as La Concepcion gains fame and popularity. While in 2013 there were 39,711 visits, 2015 registered 74,882.

Wanted man is arrested AN Italian man was arrested at Malaga-Costa del Sol airport last week under a European arrest warrant for alleged drug trafficking issued by a Belgian court, the National Police has reported. The 31-year-old man was wanted in relation to a marihuana farm with more than 1,000 plants found in Courcelles, and has been sent to Madrid to await extradition, the police force explained.

Fun performance THE municipal band of Almuñecar once again wowed an enthralled audience, as they performed a light-hearted Disney-themed concert at the Casa de la Cultura, in which all members dressed as characters from well-known films, including Pocahontas, The Lion King, The Jungle Book, and, of course, Fantasia.

RURAL: The N340 access road has regular accidents. “We’re not going to stop asking for it, rural areas deserve

not to be forgotten,” the delegate promised.

EWN takes its readers and clients very seriously indeed. A little while ago, the EWN undertook market research to find out more about our readers, and the response was both interesting and illuminating. That was not just an exercise in curiosity. It shows the philosophy that has made the EWN so successful for more than 19 years. It shows our commitment and determination to do whatever is necessary in order to satisfy our readers and clients alike. If we don’t know who our readers are and what they want to read, then they will drift away as will our clients. Armed with the extensive results of our research we know we continue to produce a tremendous product that people do want to read. The EWN is without doubt the most sought-after free English newspaper in Spain and people often phone us to ask where it is, if for some reason delivery to any of our 4,000 distribution points is delayed for even as little as one hour. This is also great news for our advertisers as they know that their adverts will receive the maximum exposure to an affluent and intelligent audience and they also know that we don’t make up stories but actually research them before rushing into print, especially if there is even a slight possibility of spreading negative misinformation about any of the areas that we and our advertisers are so close to. EWN know what it takes to be a success: hard work, commitment to clients and readers, and knowing your market as well as the ability to sacrifice whatever is necessary to reach our goal. We are a business that cares. The EWN has a social conscience which is why we are keen to report on as many charitable events as possible and where appropriate will also sponsor events on behalf of many cancer and animal charities, as well as taking up the causes of several desperately

Unlike others who rush to print on a rumour, our philosophy is to make sure that what we publish is correct. One of the most pleasing aspects to the way in which we work is the fact that we receive so many requests for assistance with simple information as we are considered not just a media group, but a group of knowledgeable friends who are always ready to assist a reader or client who doesn’t know where to turn. TalkTalk profit suffers a fall By John Smith TALKTALK one of Britain’s main telephone and broadband providers has seen profits more than halve, partly due to a major attack on its systems in October of 2015 so that it has declared profits of just £14 million (€18 million) against previous years’ profits of £32 million (€41.5 million). Israeli olive oil OLIVE growers in Israel are up in arms about a law that says only 35 per cent of the oil in a bottle needs to originate from Israel in order for it to be declared Israeli oil and it appears a great deal of Spanish oil is being imported in order to make ‘genuine’ Israeli oil. Clearly, local producers are unhappy about this and are petitioning the authorities to change the regulations as the local market is worth more than €400 million a year and they want more than 35 per cent of it.

By John Smith PERHAPS in a bid to divert interest from the Referendum vote and with a wish to establish his name as a Statesman rather than a rich boy politician, David Cameron has tried to organise a meeting of ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ in London to decry international money-laundering and corruption. There were plenty of worthies attending but not that many representatives of governments around the world and he couldn’t even ‘persuade’ the British Virgin Islands, an Overseas Territory inexorably linked with the Panama revelations to attend officially. At the end of the day, Britain is renowned for ‘playing with a straight bat’ and in fairness the government has been trying to stop British firms from gaining contracts through bribery, but unfortunately whilst other members of the European Union may pay lip service to these high ideals, it still goes on, often with State assistance although the ‘bribes’ are dressed up to look as if they are official aid. Having let slip in a possibly unguard-

ed moment in which it was broadcast that both Afghanistan and Nigeria were two of the most corrupt countries in the world, it is interesting that both of their Presidents were invited speakers and both did of course agree that behind the scenes payments are wrong. The problem is that in many parts of Africa, the trickle down economy is incredibly important so whilst those at the top do become very wealthy, they also ensure money does get passed down the chain to a very large number of people. Much was made out of the fact that a large percentage of both bribe and money-laundered money has to be stored somewhere and it is suggested that much of it is helping European Banks and indeed European economies to survive. Those wanting to bid for British government contracts will have to register and supply certain financial information as will foreigners wishing to buy property in the UK. All very laudable, but will Britain which may or may not be a member of the EU in the future actually shoot itself in the foot financially by rejecting ‘dirty money’ whilst others suck it up?

HAVING been at the centre of a number of investigations concerning ‘creative tax accounting’ and having paid at least some of the taxes it is believed to have previously avoided paying, Google has now decided that it is time to move to the side of the angels. The giant search platform has decided that it will ban advertisements from lenders who appear to take advantage of those in desperate need of financial assistance and any company that appears to be a ‘pay day loan’ operator offering short term assistance (60 days or less) and charging more than 36 per cent interest may no longer advertise with the group. According to the BBC Google’s director of product policy David Graff said “Our hope is that fewer people will be exposed to misleading or harmful products. “This change is designed to protect our users from deceptive or harmful financial products and will not affect companies offering loans such as mortgages, car loans, student loans, commercial loans, revolving

lines of credit,” he added. It is interesting to note that he made no negative comment about mainstream credit card operators who can charge near to that upper percentage figure despite the fact that the Bank rate is 0.5 per cent and of course Google will continue to direct users to porn sites and other areas of questionable activity. In actual fact, whilst it is easy to be cynical about Google, it has in the past taken action to ban a wide range of dubious commercial sites including those selling counterfeit items and explosives and it is possible that this ban will actually have more effect than government legislation which is why the Online Lenders Association is not impressed by the decision. There is no doubt that many consider that the charges levied by the companies in question are only a step above a door to door loan shark and even with new restrictions on their activities due in July, they have certainly not been seen to have the best interests of the consumer at heart.

Now IMF joins Brexit debate

PRITI PATEL MP: Said it would appear the Chancellor was cashing in favours. By John Smith CHRISTINE LAGARDE, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund declared at a press conference held at the Treasury in London that a vote in favour of Brexit in the forthcoming referendum would have “pretty bad, to very, very bad” consequences. Confirming that her opinion is similar to that expressed by Mark Carney governor of the Bank of England the previous day, she went on to say that “she had not seen anything that’s positive” about Brexit and indicated that it could “lead to a technical recession” for the UK. Naturally, those in favour of the Brexit immediately came out against the observations of probably the world’s most powerful woman involved in finance indicating that the IMF had got things wrong before and according to Priti Patel MP “It appears the Chancellor is cashing in favours to Ms Lagarde in order to encourage the IMF to bully the British people.” Lord Lamont former Chancellor of the Exchequer who presided over ‘Black Wednesday’ and was forced to withdraw Britain from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism also condemned the statement by Ms Lagarde. Ms Lagarde however said the Fund had a duty to assess the risks of Brexit and to an-

nounce them saying “I don’t think that in the last six months I have visited a country anywhere in the world where I have not been asked ‘what will be the economic consequences of Brexit?’” In addition, she said that the research undertaken by the IMF indicated that in the event of

28 days before the vote takes place, the official parties are banned from making public pronouncements.

a withdrawal from the Union, Britain could see a stock market crash as well as a drop in house prices. According to the BBC, when asked if the Treasury had had any input into the IMF’s conclusions, Ms Lagarde responded: “Heck no! If you are suggesting that, you don’t know the IMF.” As the minutes count down to the actual referendum, the next week or so will see a frenzy of comment from both sides of the argument before the official parties are formally banned from making public pronouncements starting 28 days before the vote takes place.

Time to call a spade a spade LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT

WHY are we all so frightened to speak the truth? These latest so-called ‘gaffs’ by Cameron, and even our dear old Queen (not Elton J, I hasten to add!) are cases in point. Let’s be quite clear. The Chinese are a rude jumped-up lot. They behaved abominably on their recent state visit. Even threatening to cut their visit short if, among other demands, their hotel wardrobes weren’t painted red! Furthermore, we do give aid to criminally corrupt and cruel countries, of which Nigeria and Afghanistan are two of the worst. It is also a proven fact that, although only 12 per cent of London’s men are black, 46 per cent of knife crimes and half of the gun crimes are committed by black males. There are also areas in British

cities under Sharia law. This latest one mind you, really takes the whole tin. Muslim leaders denying that terrorist attacks are almost always preceded by screams of ‘Allah Akbar.’ Well of course they are. I’ve never heard of any of them calling out ‘Christ is risen!’ The police were perfectly correct in voicing this ‘battle cry’ before their recent terror exercise. This

perversion of a religious statement is often the first warning the public get of an impending attack and may just give them a chance to at least duck before the ensuing holocaust. The police succumbing to the Muslim demands for an apology is another pathetic example of the fear of offending, which has become a UK malady over the past few years. We have to start calling a spade a spade. If we don’t, we may as well cave in now and turn the whole thing over to the luvvies and PC prats; the naïve do gooders who the militants will one day take a fiendish delight in beheading and raping in Trafalgar Square, en route to reducing Westminster to rubble. As a final observation this week, why has there been a famine in the national reporting of the Calais and Kos border immigrant problems over the last few weeks? Funny that! From the shadows (foto flickr by IU Andalucia)

Cassandra Nash A weekly look - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene

IZQ UI E R DA UNID A (IU ) is o n e o f th e most under-represented parties in Spain, despite its following. The country’s voting structure has not helped the heirs to the former Communist Party but Pablo Iglesias is going to change that. After dickering and bargaining - and a thumbs-down from a poll amongst IU members themselves - the party will go hand-inhand with Podemos in the June 26 general elections. Presumably IU leader Alberto Garzon, is onto a good thing, but so is Pablo Iglesias. Garzon’s personal scores in popularity ratings are consistently high - much higher than Iglesias’ who did not emerge well from the post-election hiatus. Could this result in a Charles and Diana situation where the consort overshadows the star player?

The good old days

Reds under the bed THE Partido Popular played the fear card by calling the Podemos-IU alliance “old communism” but that strategy could backfire. Punters might think twice about voting for the tandem, but acting president Mariano Rajoy is kidding himself if he thinks they will rush into the arms of the PP. Instead they could seek the embrace of Pedro Sanchez and the PSOE.

Keep it quiet

ALBERTO GARZON: Onto a good thing.

OPINION & COMMENT

RAJOY’S election campaign will concentrate on Spain’s successes and not Partido Popular corruption, the party’s secretarygeneral Dolores de Cospedal said. Wise move - but those successes will not be uppermost in the minds of voters who are still out of work or have unpaid mortgages. Not talking about corruption won’t make it go away and will still alienate the undecided voters who decide elections.

ALTHOUGH Podemos was born of the 15-M movement t hat occupi ed Madr i d’s Puerta del Sol in May 2011, the party hierarchy did not attend this year’s commemorations. Nonetheless, party number t wo I gnaci o Er r ej on looked back nostalgically: “Friends in the ’hood who never went to demos would call you and say ‘Hey, coming to Sol?’” Oh r eal l y! Pl ease! As ERI I woul d say. No- one doubts Errejon’s left wing cr edent i al s but he com es f r om a pr i vi l eged background, which is not necessarily a drawback in politics. Unless you want to pass for a prole, of course.

Oops, your majesty, David Cameron’s unguarded comment caught on camera Nora Johnson

Breaking Views Nora is the author of popular psychological suspense and crime thrillers and a freelance journalist. To comment on any of the issues raised in her column, go to www.euroweeklynews.com/3.0.15/nora-johnson

DAVID CAMERON was recently caught describing Afghanistan and Nigeria in unflattering terms while he discussed an upcoming anti-corruption summit with the Queen. “We’ve got some leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain,” he boasted. “Nigeria and Afghanistan possibly the two most corrupt countries in the world.” He wasn’t saying the guests themselves are corrupt, but their countries are - countries that receive millions of pounds in aid money from British taxpayers every year. It was a statement of fact, maybe lacking some tact. Nigeria’s one of the world’s biggest oil producers, yet it’s dirt poor. And consider how much money’s been poured into

Afghanistan, yet it’s still a mess. But what about closer to home? For many, the city of London is a slush fund for dirty cash - drug barons, terrorists and corrupt politicians able to flush vast fortunes through its property, art and financial markets. That’s the opinion of not only campaign groups, such as Global Witness, but also the Treasury. “Hundreds of billions of pounds of international criminal money is almost certainly laundered through UK banks and their subsidiaries each year,” it said last October. Indeed, anti-corruption campaigner, Bill Browder, told MPs last month he’d traced $30 million from a $230 million Russian tax fraud to the UK. The money flowed through all of Britain’s main banks. He’d persuaded Switzerland and America to close bank accounts and freeze assets, and seen money-laundering cases opened in Europe and the US. The UK had done nothing. “This is a money-laundering haven because nobody’s doing anything about it,” he said. London is

“levitating off Russian dirty money.” But, you know, corruption’s also about less obvious aspects of life. Like

Hundreds of billions of pounds of criminal money is laundered through UK banks. NHS hospital managers too focused on business, cash and targets, not patient care - with some fatal results. Police going after ‘easy’ targets to improve clear-up rates. BBC management turning a blind eye to Savile’s activities. Based on these criteria, the UK is hardly corruption/scandal-free. Finally, back to that unguarded comment of Mr Cameron’s... pot and kettle come to mind? Nora Johnson’s thrillers ‘No Way Back,’ ‘Landscape of Lies,’ ‘Retribution,’ ‘Soul Stealer,’ ‘The De Clerambault Code’ (www.nora-johnson.com) Profits to Cudeca charity.

DAVID CAMERON: Pot and kettle come to mind.

sour either your thoughts or your character. You are in the eye of the storm so take this time to think. A bit of care and attention is what you need and you know where to find it.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) When you meet opposition try to use persuasion and logic to win the day. Failing that, you may decide that ‘enough is enough’ and forge ahead, anyway. In this positive mood you find yourself attractive to the opposite sex. That does not mean you have a right to be pushy. Just use your charm. Combining business with pleasure could lead to trouble, so try to keep these two areas separate.

(April 21 - May 21)

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) At times this week you will feel that a certain relationship is not developing along the right lines. Although it seems that your efforts are often in vain, this is a situation that requires thought and patience on your part. It is perhaps a good time to look to your business matters for a change of scene and to set your mind on a more constructive course.

moments this week, but all is not lost. Listen to your heart as it speaks louder than any other voice. You know what you need but that may conflict with what you feel you should want. In an ideal world, these two areas would be in harmony. Give a little happiness to others and your own heart will be lighter.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) You know in your heart that you should take control of your future. This is a time to talk with others and consider their thoughts. At the end of the day, however, you are the one who has the final say.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) This is not a time to drift into things because the planets are urging you to take control and forge ahead. Let others know exactly what you want and expect from them.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Making firm decisions in your love life may prove difficult. Do not be rushed. This is far from a straightforward week and you need to remember how to relax. You are able to deal with what comes your way but it is upsetting to find that someone has been less than honest.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) You should not feel responsible for the failings of others. Although you may think you could have done more in a certain situation, it is unlikely that any significant difference would have resulted. This is a busy time but also one in which a small persistent voice will be heard: the voice of logic and practicality. Listen to it.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) There is a strong feeling of self’ this week, and you realise that you have many things to be thankful for. These thoughts come after a period of uncertainty that saw a lack of progress.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Feel sympathy for those who lack the gift of insight. Their lack of understanding upsets you, but their horizons are narrow. This is a time of giving to yourself. Look forward to some time away or indulging in something that really relaxes you. Should you be searching for someone special, they may be closer than you know.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Someone who appears to be putting themselves in the way of your progress could simply be trying to help. They may have a valid point to make but just not be good at expressing themselves. Be aware of this because there could be a link to your health and love life.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Your sense of balance in the universe could be upset, but do not let this

With your mind sharp and energy high, you want to make fast progress and, indeed, you can. You are only too aware of the time that has been wasted waiting for others. Now, most of that may be dealt with. See how others react when you do not. Leaving others to their own devices works better than nagging. Your lack of interest could worry them.

Why such a poor deal? Photographs for possible publication should be sent by email with a full caption to: photonews@euroweeklynews.com

IF Britain’s membership of the EU is essential for world peace and the world’s financial security, why did Cameron return with such a poor deal? Kill three birds with one stone, as by voting Brexit the British get their c o u n t r y b a c k , A me ric a is forced to find another buffer state against Russia, and the UK gets rid of Cameron who has been shown to be a manipulative and deceptive quisling. George Morland, Cartagena

What is best? I WISH to comment on C V William s’s l e t t e r i n s u p p o rt o f Brexit, which focuses on the primary objective of the referendum, namely, what is best for the United Kingdom? As C V Williams quite rightly points out, this is about what is in the best interests of the country inhabited by our children and future generations. This is not a referendum on what is best for expatriates who left the UK for what they perceived to be a better life in Spain, however, that is not to say that British citizens living outside of the U K sh o u l d b e d e n ie d th eir right to vote. Many people will simply want to look after number one but this is, surely, a much bigger question than ‘what’s in it for me,’ here! At present, nobody knows what would be the effect on expatriates living in Spain or elsewhere in Europe if the UK votes to leave, and many questions will not be answered unless and until the UK does leave, but we should remember that it is a two-way street. We are being subjected to a climate of fear and foreboding, most of which is based on the unknown, with financial forecasts predicated on anything but fact and espoused by so-called experts who struggle to produce accurate forecasts from month to month. They speak all too freely about the cataclysmic effect that leaving the EU would have on Britain’s trade, but seem to make no reference t o t h e e c o n o mic co n s e quences of tit-for-tat tariffs/sanctions b e i n g i m p o se d o n g o o d s destined for the UK from Germany, France and the rest of the EU!

reason this Leapy Lee and many hundreds of other Brits decided to come to live in Spain but it was certainly not to downgrade, but to hopef ul l y enhance or i m pr ove their life, be it sun, sand or whatever. It is a good job then that he was not classed by the Spanish as an unwanted heathen alien and turned back at the border; are the many hundreds of Moroccans who work so hard on the fields for very little pay also classed as heathen undeserving aliens? Just a quick comment on his views of the EU: would his children have welcomed the loss of half of their inheritance to the Spanish tax man? Because that is what would have happened if it were not for EU intervention. Hypocritical is not a strong enough word. Ray Osborne, Los Alcazares

Missed point AS much as I regret the sad death of Fatima and the lady killed the previous week in San Pedro (not her fault), I think that the Spanish need to be educated on the use of pedestrian crossings. Very few of them, and mainly women, watch the traffic, but step out looking only forward, or at their mobile phones, regardless of how near,

Do they seriously believe that the French and Germans in particular would be happy with that? If people are dissatisfied with Britain’s present relationship with th e E U , th ey s h ould a s k the mselves whether they think it will get any better if Britain stays in; if th ey d o n o t b e lie ve it w ill improve, this is their one and only opportunity to actually do something about it. The irony is that Britain fought in world wars to preserve its right to live in a democratic society and the way the EU works, it is anything but. This is a hugely important decision to make and, regrettably, with each passing day it is sounding more and more like the plot from T h e P o s eid o n A dve nture – in which case, I’m with the vicar! Ken San Fulgencio

or how fast the traffic is moving. The most frightening ones are the young mothers, who push their babies out first. They all appear to think that vehicles can stop instantly, whereas we drivers know better, and must take extra care approaching crossings. Ed Naughton Coin

Predicted by Gaddafi? ON April 10, 2006 Colonel Muammer Gaddafi made the following statement: “ We a lre a dy ha ve 50 million M us lims in Europe . The re a re signs that Allah will grant Islam vic tory in Europe – w ithout swords, without guns, without conquests. The 50 million Muslims of Europe will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades.” If Turkey is added to the European Union, Europe will have another 50 million Muslims. A lba nia , a M us lim-ma jority country, and Bosnia, which is half Muslim, also appear to be on their way to EU membership. Europe is in a predicament, and

so is America, Gaddafi said. “They should agree to become Islamic in the course of time, or else declare war on the Muslims.” Now you don’t have to be Albert Einstein to understand what Gadaffi was saying 10 years ago. You just have to be ‘stupid’ if you don't understand. Ian Thomas

Leapy critic I HAVE been in Spain since January and have not yet taken up residence here so not sure if I am entitled to make a comment in your paper. H a vin g r ead Leapy Lee’s r esponse to the many complaints he received from readers, I must comment regarding the final quote on heathen, undeserving aliens. I don’t wish to know for whatever

WOW!! You seem to be missing the point of my light-hearted piece (Issue 1607) Mr Henderson. The whole point was optics are not Spanish, the whole experience of shot pouring is missing! You also failed to point out as I said in the initial article that I don’t drink spirits, so chasing inferior spirits at inferior prices is so far from my intention. As I also said optics are fine for stock control and enhancing the bottom line but again we are in Spain! With regards to not knowing anything about bars, I have spent most of my life running catering houses, restaurants and public houses. I was also a member of UKBG (look it up) for many years. No optics in the cocktail bars where I worked as a young bartender. Kind Regards, Philip San Fulgencio

THIS week our GP, Dr Perez Belmonte, has replied to a reader’s letter expressing his concerns regarding his knee pain. In a note, the doctor explained that this is one of the most common complaints medical professionals hear from both younger and older patients and can have a variety of causes. Dear Doctor, I’m a 46-year-old man and for some time now I’ve often been feeling quite a lot of pain in my knees, especially when I exercise. I don’t remember having done anything to have sprained or over-exerted them and I’m not really overweight, I could maybe lose a couple of kilos at the most. Plus I’ve always tried to walk for a while every day to keep fit. I’m worried about this pain in case it is a sign of an illness or something, I don’t think I’m old enough for it to be arthritis or anything like that. What do you think it

could be, and what can I do about it? Dear patient, Joint pain, especially in the knees, is a very frequent reason people see their doctors. Reading your letter it sounds to me like it could be a condition caused by general wear and tear to the joints from continuous use. The first thing you should do is see a traumatologist who will examine you and probably have xrays done. If they do not find any injuries or other obvious causes, you should then see a specialist in internal medicine who will look for possible rheumatoid conditions such as arthritis. For the time being I would recommend you do your best to avoid overexerting the joints, only take moderate exercise, lose some weight, take a vitamin supplement and use pain-killers sparingly, only when they are really needed.

Women more likely to suffer illness ARE women really the weaker sex? A survey by retail analysts Mintel said that women were more likely to report having suffered various ailments, with 81 per cent reporting suffering a headache in the past year, versus 68 per cent of men. It found 57 per cent of women have suffered back pain, compared to 50 per cent of men and one in three women; 34 per cent said they had experienced five or more different types of pain in the last 12 months versus one in four men. Some 57 per cent of women who suffered a cold or flu said they coped by going to bed and resting, compared to a lower 44 per cent of men. The study found that 78 per cent of women are happy to turn to over the counter medicines when they are ill, compared to 66 per cent of men. Mintel’s Consumer Lifestyles Analyst said the research showed that women are notably more likely to experience more types of pain as well as experiencing a greater range of pains. This could be due to the fact that women continue to multi-task in terms of running the household, caring for the children and holding down a job leading them to feel run down and more susceptible to bugs and illness.

A beer a day healthy, say researchers FORGET an apple a day to keep the doctor away, a beer a day could be the answer. Researchers claim that moderate consumption of beer can reduce the risk of heart and blood vessel diseases by a quarter. Scientists from Italy’s IRCCS Mediterranean Neurological Institute, Pozzilli, said the alcohol and the high level of antioxidants in the drink reduce the risk of heart and artery disease as well as strokes. Their conclusions came after reviewing 150 studies and finding that drinking 1.4 pints or two 330ml cans protects the heart, without increasing the odds of dementia or cancers. Another study found that beer could also slow neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s, thanks to an ingredient in hops, that scientists in China believe could help protect brain cells from damage associated with dementia.

Call an expert Mike Senker

In my opinion Views of a Grumpy Old Man WHAT is it with experts, these people that know what’s best for me? They have never met me. I am me and I don’t know what’s best for me so what chance do they have? I keep hearing adverts for financial advisers who know the absolute best way for me to earn squillions by using them. Well if they are so good why don’t they use their knowledge and earn the squillions themselves instead of nicking a bit of commission off the top from my investment? I love the end bit of the ads where they talk at about 500mph, telling you how basically it’s not safe and the risk is all yours and your investment may not only drop but actually plummet. Or the expert at my bank that advised me to put my savings into some scheme they had going and which, after four years had earned nothing! I’m no expert but that ain’t good advice and when I complained he got all grumpy and said it only ever guaranteed I wouldn’t lose money. Great! Thanks for that!

What about the experts who say that studies show that everybody will be seen within four hours of arriving at A & E... not going to happen. And now, of course, we have all sorts of experts advising what will happen if the UK stays in or leaves the EU. They can’t all be right but they all think they are! Years ago a friend of mine asked me for a really good accountant that could advise him about going bankrupt. I said I could do better than that and gave him the name of another friend of ours. He said, “He’s not an accountant.” I said, “I know.” So why him?…Because he’s been bankrupt and he knows what it’s really like! I wanted house insurance when I lived in the UK. The insurance company sent their expert round, who in turn recommended a locksmith and safe company, which of course they get commission from as they have to have the right spec etc. The neighbourhood local police also came and gave me advice. It was all very confusing. So I called my mate and said, “Who do you use to sort out your house insurance?” He told me to call Martin. I said, “Is he police or an insurance company man?” He said, “No he is an ex-burglar and he knows exactly how to secure your property …he’s an expert in fact!”

SAVING LIVES: The new system will automatically summon assistance. B M W ha s de ve lope d an em ergency contact system for motorbikes which, similar to the eCall system for cars, will automatically summon assistance in the event of a crash. eCall is expected to save some 2,500 lives per year on the roads as emergency response times will be drastically cut by up to 50 per cent reducing the threat of delay during that all too crucial ‘golden hour.’ Now, BMW has developed the system for motorbikes which use a series of sensors to detect the angle of the vehicle, if it has fallen over, the speed and sudden change, and the severity in the event of an impact.

Having already had equipment on cars for a decade, BMW are also extending the system to allow passengers or witnesses to summon assistance by means of a help button, and the equipment will be installed in all new motorbikes sold by the company from next year. As well as the anticipated 2,500 lives expected to be saved, the roll-out of the system on all new vehicles from 2018 is also expected to save millions in damage and medical bills. A taste of the Orient FRIGILIANA is set for a taste of the Orient, as the Casa del Apero will host an evening of both traditional and contemporary Japanese music in the shakuhachi and koto styles on Saturday June 4. Shakuhachi is a bamboo flute dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868), which was primarily used by Zen Buddhist monks of the Fuke sect, who had to pass through three main training challenges: a form of meditation known as zazen, interpretation of the

shakuhachi, and, sometimes, a form of martial art in which the heavy body of the flute was used as a defensive weapon. The koto is a stringed instrument around two metres long, and while the traditional model has 13 strings, there may be up to 25. It originated in China and was introduced to Japan around the seventh century, although it was not until the 16th that it began to become important, and it is now considered the country’s national instrument.

Reaping the benefits By Jill Pickering THE recent rain has failed to allay drought fears in Axarquia, but the threat failed to deter the Periana community during this year’s commemoration of the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro Labrador, as they maintained their annual tradition of hurling 40 tonnes of wheat at an effigy of the glorified soul as it w a s pa ra de d through the tow n’s streets. In fact, the festival was conceived due to a pe riod of prolonge d drought, when residents implored the protector of the fields to bring rain and save their crops by throwing w he a t gra ins from the ir ba lconies. Almost two centuries later, the tradition continues, while local crops consist mostly of varieties which can withstand arid conditions, such as olives and grapes. Reclaiming your lost deposits AS Spanish property prices boomed from 2000 onwards, thousands of people took advantage of purchasing properties offplan from developers to use as holiday homes. Large sums of hard-earned money were placed with developers to enjoy the benefits on completion of these projects. As worldwide recession took a grip, many developers across Spain failed to complete construction due to running out of funds and, in many cases, developers entering into liquidation, leaving purchasers without a property and, more importantly, the loss of their deposits. Purchasers were therefore left in the unfortunate position as to not knowing what had happened to their deposit money. The key questions asked were, who has our money? And how do we get our deposit money back if the developer has entered into liquidation? FOR SALE: Home sales in Spain were 16.8 per cent higher than March last year. THE latest figures released by the National Statistics Institute revealed that home sales figures in Spain were 16.8 per cent higher for last March than for March 2015, registering a total of 31,925 transactions. This was the second month in a row that sales registered a year-on-year increase, following a 15.8 per cent increase in February.

The March increase was largely down to the secondhand market, which registered a 24.2 per cent year on year increase to 25,765 sales. New homes, however, registered a 6.6 per cent decline compared to March 2015. With respect to area, the Canary Islands were the region to register the most sales per 100,000 inhabitants (127) fol-

lowed by the Balearic Islands (108). However, without taking population into account and focusing on plain numbers, Andalucia saw the most sales in March (6,299) followed by Cataluña (5,123), Madrid (4,878) and Valencia (4,186). La Rioja (186) and Cantabria (352) proved to be the least popular with property buyers.

Don’t fake it . . . Enjoy it Understanding art is not important, if it pleases you, then I have achieved something.

Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-thewall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

IT does my heart good when I see that some pontificating art snob has been taken to the cleaners with a clever fake, as happened recently in London. Many of the pictures that we personally own were painted by a late Bermudian friend and are therefore special to us. He made his living as an artist, but having sold most of his work to American tourists over many years, you won’t find any examples in a Sotheby’s auction - although according to eBay, prices are steadily rising. But they are colourful and evocative and have special meaning to us. We also have one that my Dad painted many years ago. It is of Dunster village in Somerset that he copied

UNDERSTANDING ART: No pretentious analysis is necessary. from a Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin (I bet Rembrandt never did that) and naturally it’s special to me. Another is a humorous pencil drawing of several dogs peeing up a wall human style. It hangs on the wall in

the downstairs loo, and if people don’t like it, they can look away. On second thoughts, they had better not, the walls are freshly painted. And yet another, a pastel drawing of my wife, executed by my closest friend,

has pride of place on our lounge wall. The point is, although the combined framing has probably cost more than our collection is worth, every piece represents a part of our lives. In the 60’s I was intro-

duced to the artist Terry Durham, whose work in those days was loosely termed as abstract. He could see that I was searching for words to comment on a particular striking piece that appealed to me. “Understanding it is not important,” he told me. “If it pleases you, then I have achieved something.” And that’s it in a nutshell. Whether it is art, music or literature, enjoyment is all, and no pretentious analysis is necessary. And if it floats your boat to have three ceramic flying ducks on your wall, a collection of Jeffrey Archer novels and a Paul Potts album playing, then go for it.

PRINCE: Plays volleyball.

The Invictus Games lesson PRINCE HARRY recently opened the second International Invictus Games at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida, which sees wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and other associated veterans take part in sports including wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball, and indoor rowing. The concept was first put together by Prince Harry as he saw the spirit and need to recover in many of those in the British Armed Forces who had been injured, often very severely, in times of ‘war’ in various trouble spots around the world. Named after the Latin word invictus meaning ‘unconquered or undefeated’, it accurately describes the dedication and incredible accomplishment that those who take part can achieve, thanks to the effort that they put into overcoming their individual disabilities. The Invictus Games are international and now attract participants from 15 countries, mainly those who have been involved in conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq, although any serviceman or woman who has been injured physically or mentally whilst in service of their country is welcome to participate. When you see the way in which these brave men and women have overcome such dreadful injuries to allow them to participate in the rough and tumble of competitive sport, it is quite incredible, and certainly brings home the fact that many of our day-to-day troubles are nothing compared to what these people have suffered and achieved.

Patios an ancient tradition The Bodegas de Campos Patios The historic Bodegas de Campos i s a good pl ace t o eat af t er several hours of traipsing around the historic gems of Cordoba at any t i m e of t he year, but don’t miss out on seeing the historic maze of patios of this part of the old town. There is an interesting tour each day, 11.00am in English and midday in Spanish/English, through a complex of old wine cellars, houses factories and patios.

Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

ANCIENT patio style gardens are great for the21st century. Patio gardens are not something invented by the Chelsea Flower Show, but are a style of garden existing in southern Europe since the Iberians and Romans. Today the attractiveness of them still remains for four main reasons and each are creatively illustrated in the annual May Patio Festival in Cord o b a wh i c h h as ju s t fin ished, but keeping your eyes open you will discover wonderful examples throughout Spain. The best are places to live in throughout the year with wall-towall shading during the hottest hours a n d m o n t h s a nd w ith th e shading keeping the ground mostly dry during the rainy season. Roman style patios not highlighted in the Cordoba Fiesta Roman lifestyle was an outward going one with eating and drinking away from home with visits to the theatre and sporting arenas. Home patios were therefore for resting and not merrymaking and patios tended to be cool and subdued with white walls and green vegetation. Much use being made of ferns, ivies and aspidistras.

Villa and apartment covered terraces If you have a sizeable covered villa or apartment terrace treat its design like a patio with a roof. There are several suggested design ideas for this in the book ‘Apartment gardening Mediterranean style.’

PATIO GARDENS: Great for the 21st century. 21st Century Style Arab Patios Arab life in Cordoba was a much more subdued affair than today with leisure time focused on h o me e s p ec ia lly w he re w ome n were concerned. So patios became full of perfumed flowering plants an d to d a y c o mp e titors in e a c h year’s May Patio Festival attempt to outdo historic levels of beauty.

Patio swimming pools Larger patios can incorporate mini terraced patios to one side with a swimming pool surrounded by masses of colour and deep arches of shade on the other. Somewhat more enticing for a dip than a standard pool plonked in the middle of a large terrace where it is the main feature of a future garden.

The famous patios of the Viana Palace The Viana Palace in Cordoba is one of my favourites. The family palace is surrounded by a dozen pat i os of di ff er ent styles. These are not in the Cordoba Patio Festival, but are open all the year round.

There are so many examples of ancient creative gardens in Spain to inspire today’s expat gardeners to plan to live outdoors throughout most months of the year. It is sad that the advent of airconditioning has caused many to close out nature and not enjoy the potential of Spanish living to the full. (c) Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com May 2016.

Chameleons AMONG the reptile speci es t hat can be observed in our gardens is one of the most charismatic of the lot, and Spain’s singular arboreal lizard. The Mediterranean cham el eon i s t he onl y chame-leon species found in Spain, although some authorities believe it was introduced from Africa several hundred years ago. Whatever its origin, the somewhat lugubriouslooking beast is restricted t o Huel va, Cadi z and Malaga, being most abundant in the latter. With its bizarre, three-

toed grip and prehensile tail, the chameleon is perfectly-suited to a life among trees and shrubbery, where it lies in wait for its insect prey, which is ambushed using its ballistic, long, sticky tongue. Breeding takes place in late summer to early autumn, when females descend t o t he gr ound t o bury their eggs in sand or loose earth. FOOD has a vast effect on dogs’ behaviour as indeed we learn from feeding children wrong food where behaviour is affected. Food allergies can cause dermatological discomfort. It has been estimated that at least 50 per cent of all skin problems in cats and dogs are caused by dietary allergies. These can be triggered in minutes, hours or days. Sensitivity to an allergy caused by a protein can often be lifelong. Some dogs can digest the lactose in cows’ milk while the undigested lactose quickly produces an upset stomach with others. This is not a true allergy but demonstrates how sensitive

DOGS’ BEHAVIOUR: Food has a vast effect. to certain food pets can be. Stop the milk and your pet’s life will look up immediately. Most dogs react in some way to incorrect feeding and, apart from allergic reactions, flatulence and inconsistent stool quality and large smelly motions can result. If the balance of the food is incorrect hyperactivity or, indeed, low activity can be the consequence. Protein used up for energy can produce a loss of coat and skin vitality. Many owners give far too many vitamins - a wellbalanced diet should not have

to be supplemented. Scratching, licking and digging could be an indication of an allergic reaction to food and the eating of grass, twigs and roots sometimes is an indication that the food is not being digested properly. The destruction of fibre-based material could be another sign that there is a craving for fibre to help the digestive process in some way. Many pet shops and vets are now selling artificial bones. But beware of anything coloured since this must have an additive. I would only buy one

which had a label stating what chemicals had been added. These toys have been known to cause hyperactivity and low activity. If your dog needs something to chew then try a Kong or rope stuffed with goodies which can occupy your pet for hours. The dried food I recommend are Hills Science Diet, Eucanubu, Royal Canine and any food recommended by a vet. Do not buy cheap food in a supermarket and you should see a change in behaviour in 48 hours.

AAR is making a difference AS an animal rescue charity, AAR is constantly looking for ways to improve the prospects of finding forever homes for their rescued dogs. Many of these dogs turn out to be wonderful, loving and loyal pets despite the trauma they have gone through. Foster homes provide a great opportunity to help a dog to grow in confidence and build trust, but sometimes there aren’t enough foster homes to go around. The dogs then have to be put into private kennels until a foster home can be found. This can take weeks or months and although these souls are fed, given treatment and cared for, opportunities for stimulation that will benefit their long term are scarce. Many of the dogs have not had the luxury of a loving home life, some have been

KENNEL ANGELS: Being a volunteer is rewarding. physically abused or starved and the majority have the additional mental scarring of being dumped or abandoned. The purpose of a Kennel Angel is to start the process of socialising or resocialising the kennel dogs, helping them overcome their fears. Being a volunteer Kennel Angel is totally flexible, each one putting in the time and ef-

fort that is convenient for them and involves initially visiting the kennels and meeting the dogs, getting to know them and gaining their trust. This may be once a week, or more if time permits. Socialising plays an important part in preparing the dogs for a foster or forever home. Kennel Angels work with one or more of the dogs and provide

opportunities for them to experience different situations such as walking on a lead, visiting markets or cafes, going on short car journeys, or simply sitting, talking to and spending time with the animals. Obviously, giving treats or rewards is an important part! It is, of course, useful to have experience of dogs, but most importantly to love them. It is an ideal opportunity for people who can’t commit to fostering or adoption. This rewarding opportunity is open to residents or non-residents who may spend several weeks or months in Spain. The kennels are based in Puente Don Manuel and Riogordo so anyone within travelling distance who is interested can find out more by contacting AAR at axarquiarescue@hotmail.com.

A FREEDOM of Information Request (FOI) has revealed 30year-old women are 19 times more likely to be caught drinkdriving than 18-year-olds. For men, 30-year-olds have clocked up 95 per cent more offences compared to 18-yearolds in the past five years. Twenty-seven-year-old men and 26-year-old women were the most likely to drive having quaffed a few imbibes, with 8,886 and 1,620 infractions, respectively.

Clarkson Quote of theWeek

Pimped M4 is the rarest By Matthew Elliott BMW has unveiled the stunning new M4 Competition Sport (CS) at the Madrid International Auto Show, an exclusive edition for Spain limited to just 60 officially numbered units, making it even rarer than the 700-unit M4 GTS, which is available worldwide.

The elite model combines the virtues of the M4 Coupe, as rear seats remain in place, with brash aesthetic and aerodynamic enhancements courtesy of a suite of M Performance parts. The exterior is thus super sharp, with bespoke kidney grille and side mirrors, carbon-fibre front splitter, air curtains, rear diffuser, and a monster fixed rear wing, plus the same 20-inch light alloy wheels, high performance low profile tyres, and carbon ceramic brakes as the GTS. Inside, new body-hugging seats offer improved lateral support thanks to optimised grip fins, with

other additions including full carbon fibre trim, an enhanced audio system, heads up display, and a numbered plaque, plus an exclusive key fob. Performance sits midway between the M4 Coupe and hardcore GTS edition, with the tuned 3.0 litre six-cylinder BMW M Twinpower turbo lump churning out 450 bhp at 7,000 rpm and 550 Nm of torque between 1,8505,500 rpm. Flat out the car will do 280 km/h, with 0-100 km/h achieved in four seconds flat,

just two 10ths down on the GTS, a claimed fuel consumption of 8.3 litres per 100 km and combined CO2 emissions of 194 g/km. A whiff of German engineering witchcraft is going on underneath the body too, with the car’s chassis, suspension damping, differential, and stability control systems all having been tuned and tweaked, while a new sports exhaust package offers added growl.

Colour options are slim; buyers can opt for either Brilliant White (seen here), San Marino Blue, or Jerez Black. Whereas the standard M4 retails for €92,100 and the M4 GTS is on sale at €166,900, the M4 CS will be priced at €132,900, and BMW will even enrol you on a driver training programme to teach you how to get the most out of your new motor on an “emblematic circuit”. Engage drift…

FOOTBALL • Last weekend effectively saw the end of the mandatory League games for 2015-16, and what a great finish it was for runner’s-up Arsenal (4-0 winners over Aston Villa) and for relegated Newcastle (5-1 victors over Spurs). There were also wins for Everton (3-0 over Norwich), Southampton (4-1 against Crystral Palace) and Stoke City (2-1 v West Ham). Champions Leicester (1-1 at Chelsea), Arsenal, Spurs, Manchester City (who drew 1-1 at Swansea in Manuel Pelligrini’s last game in charge), Southampton and Manchester United will all be playing in Europe next season, so too could Liverpool who drew 1-1 at WBA, while Sunderland shared four goals with Watford. • The Manchester United v Bournemouth game was abandoned because of a security alert. HARRY KANE: Top scorer in the PL.

• Harry Kane won the PL ‘Golden Boot’ award with 25 goals for third-placed Spurs. • Celtic celebrated winning the SPL for the fifth season running with an emphatic 7-0 lastmatch win over Motherwell. Ross County won 4-0 at Aberdeen. • Barcelona’s 3-0 win at Granada, with a Luis Suarez hat-trick, gave them their 24th La Liga title. Real Madrid (second) beat Deportivo 2-0, both goals scored by Cristiano Ronaldo who ended the campaign with 50 to his name for the sixth season running. • At the time of going to print, Sheffield Wednesday (2-0 winners over Brighton), Hull (who beat Derby 3-0), Barnsley (also 3-0 victors over Walsall), Wimbledon (with a 1-0 advantage over Accrington) and Millwall (who won 3-1 at Bradford City) were all heading to Wembley for their respective playoff finals. Already there are Plymouth Argyle who beat Portsmouth in FL2. • In the Vanarama Conference final at Wembley, Grimsby Town beat Forest Green Rovers 3-1 to return to the Football League after a break of six years. The Mariners are back at the same venue this Sunday for the FA Trophy final with Halifax Town. • Last night Liverpool met Sevilla in the Europa League final in Basle, and on Saturday Crystal Palace play Manchester United and Hibs meet Rangers in their respective FA Cup finals north and south of the border. • North of the border there have been decisive play-off wins for Ayr United, Edinburgh City, Falkirk

and Queen’s Park, and around Europe, Bayern Munich (Germany), PSG (France) and Juventus (Italy) have all been crowned domestic champions. Napoli’s Gonazalo Higuain, with 40 goals, has broken the Serie A scoring record of 39, set by Gunnar Nordahl back in 1949-50. • Arsenal Ladies beat Chelsea Ladies 1-0 to win the Women’s FA Cup final for a record 14th time in front of a record crowd of 32,912 at Wembley. • And this week, several managers/coaches will (or have) named their squads for this summer’s European Championships in France. FORMULA ONE • With victory in Barcelona last Sunday, Red Bull debutant Max Verstappen became the youngest-ever winner of a Grand Prix, aged 18 (three days younger than Sebastian Vettel). The competent Dutchman finished ahead of the Ferrari duo of Kimi Raikkonen and Vettel. The Mercedes pair of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton crashed into each other and went out on the first lap. Both drivers escaped penalties. • The next race is in Monte Carlo on May 29. RUGBY UNION • Saracens are the European Champions after beating Racing 92 in the final in Paris by 21 points to nine. This is the first time an English club has won this competition since Wasps in 2007. Saracens, who won all nine of their Champions Cup matches, now meet Leicester in the Premiership final, aiming to complete the double. TENNIS • Andy Murray faced Novak Djokovic once again in the final of last Sunday’s Italian Open – and this time he beat the world number one in straight sets to become the first Brit to win this specific title since 1931. What a great 29th birthday present and a massive boost before the first major of the year at Roland Garros. Serena Williams beat fellow American Madison Keys to win the women’s title. • The Geneva Open is now underway in Switzerland. GOLF • Jason Day (by four shots), Kevin Chappell and Justin Thomas finished 1-2-3 in the

Liberty Seguros’ young hopefuls ON May 22, 2016 the ‘IX Carrera Liberty Seguros 10Km’ or ‘9th Liberty Seguros 10Km Race’ will take place in Madrid. This vastly popular race has a highly significant solidarity objective: to help young athletes of the ‘Team Liberty Insurance Paralympic Athletics’ to realise their dreams of becoming professional paralympians. These individuals struggle every day to succeed and advance in the professional paralympian arena, and strive to represent Spain internationally in future Paralympic Games. Registration is little more than €10, however, those that do not wish to take part in the race can contribute to the development of the young athletes of the ‘Liberty Team Paralympic Promises’ by making an anonymous monetary donation of their choice. This can be done by bank transfer, with the reference clearly marked as ‘Dorsal Zero,’ to the following account with IBAN number: ES73 2038 1042 7560 0080 7227. This race, which represents a very important part of Liberty’s Corporate and Social Responsibility programme, has been celebrated since 2008. The event has seen a great rise in popularity over the years and the race has been adapted to make it even more attractive to both participants and fans. Along with the traditional 10km run, this year Liberty Seguros is set to launch the ‘Carrera de la Superación,’ a 1,000-metre race that has been specifically designed for those who do not have the physical capability, or those that have a disability that impedes them from taking part in the main 10km race. In connection with the marathon, Liberty Seguros has created #SeSalen, the largest fan club for Paralympic sports to date. What’s more, to further this support one of Spain’s most famous

LIBERTY SEGUROS: Popular race to raise money for hopeful paralympians. rap artists, El Langui, has created an anthem. You can show your encouragement for these athletes across social media platforms by quoting the hashtag #SeSalen. More information can be found at: www.carreraliberty.es. More information: • The Liberty Seguros Group, one of the principal sponsors of the Spanish Paralympic Committee, strengthens the activity of the ADO Paralympic Plan (ADOP) by supporting athletes in their training. • The collaboration and partnership was established in 2007 and has since been revised. Over the years the commitment between the two entities has grown and developed into a relationship of mutual trust and success for paralympians. • As a result of this collaboration, the ‘Liberty Seguros Paralympic Athletics Promises Team’ was born – an initiative in which the insurer supports and finances young people with different disabilities, who are striving to achieve a future in the world of sport. • The team, made up of 16 boys and girls aged between 12 and 15 years of age from different locations across Spain, are athletes with either physical disabilities, visual impairments or cerebral palsy.

Los Moriscos Friday May 6 North vs South Matchplay. North won by 13 to eight and one game was halved. Forty-four players took part, even the players who said they were afraid of match play enjoyed it. Lots of banter, nip and tuck, and sometimes serious golf! The course was in good condition with the pin positions easily accessible. Fortunately, no mishaps this week, apart from the usual, ‘has anyone found my car keys,’ and ‘I have lost my five-iron.’ The duck is recovering

well, and hopefully Ray Craig has dried out and his trolley is up and running! Anoreta Monday May 9 No Play. Baviera Tuesday May 10 3-2-1 Dubai Game. First Team: Ray Craig, Gill Sibson, Russell Dick and Brian Munroe - 56pts. Second Team: Derek Sibson, Ken Dobell, Clive Akid and Marney Dick - 55pts. Third Team: John Blanco, Roy Boutel, Graeme Birch and Marlyse Blair - 54pts.

Twos: Gill Sibson: five and 15, John Conlan: five and Ray Craig: 15. Despite the threatening weather, everyone turned up for a 3-2-1 Dubai game. It was a pleasure to welcome back two returning members, Jackie Viles and Graeme Birch. Everything went well for the first couple of hours until there was a short but heavy shower. All credit to the players they all played on, then as the last group reached the 13th tee, there was a thunder storm in the distance and the rain set in for good. Time to return to the clubhouse and call it a 12hole competition. For all this there were some excellent scores. The winning three teams were within two points of one another at 56, 55 and 54 points (the scratch for 12 holes being 46 points). There were four twos, Gill Sibson having two of them!

THIS WEEK: Was a three-ball competition at Marina Phoenix. THURSDAY, May 12 was a three-ball competition at Marina Phoenix, with the best two stableford scores to count on each hole. The winners with 77 points were Isobel Jones, Marcos Caparros and Jim Budd. In second place with 74 points were Liam MacNamee, John Lally and Margaret Budd, followed in third by Don Atkins, Russell Porter and Bob Craig (71). There were nearest the pin prizes for Eddie Robinson (fifth) and Nadie Wass (17th).

Monday’s individual stableford was a single division as many of the ladies were away on various trips. The winners was Tony Griffiths (35), ahead of John Lally (33) in second. Les Armfield was third (32). Marina Phoenix play Mondays (individual) and Thursdays (team game).
