‘NO VACANCIES’ signs go up as occupation rates soar By Eleanor Hawkins August is here and the Costa Tropical is thriving as hotels report full bookings for the first half of the month. Following a record July, the best in five years, with establishments forced to put up ‘no vacancies’ signs at weekends, bookings combined with visitors already on site indicate the situation will last until at least the middle of August.

“Occupation rates for hotels are excellent, especially up until the 15th,” said Rafael Lamelas, President of the Granada coast hoteliers’ association. He added: “Everywhere is almost fully booked, mainly down to the fact that a lot of people have their holidays this month, and Motril and Almuñecar have fairs which attract visitors.” Frantic activity could be seen at ho-

tels in all the main areas at the weekend, and the beaches were filled with holiday-makers, a welcome sight indeed after the slump years. To accommodate the extra visitors, a daily bus service has been laid on between Malaga Airport and Almuñecar, with stops in Maro, Nerja, Torrox Costa and Torre del Mar. The bus leaves Almuñecar at 8.30am and the airport at 11.45am.

Strikes called off THE Spanish air traffic controllers union has announced that strikes planned for August will be postponed in order to avoid causing inconvenience for travellers during the busy month. The union

has complained about the government’s regulations to enforce minimum services of 70-80 per cent during strikes, and said it would decide in September whether more strikes would take place.

ICONIC LANDMARK: Salobreña Castle was built between the 14th and 15th centuries. By Eleanor Hawkins

ASAJA young farmers association has expressed its gratitude following an announcement that a National Police force helicopter will be patrolling at night to deter mango thieves.

Velez Malaga is where most of Spain’s mangos are grown, and as the collection campaign is due to start within a few weeks the fruit is very susceptible to theft, the association explained.

SALOBREÑA Castle, one of the town’s main icons and tourist attractions, has once again opened to the public after a 15-month break for renovation work. Although various tasks continue, including placing a protective cover over recently

discovered Arab baths, most of the castle has been opened up to allow the many visitors in the area this month the chance to have a look round. The local mayor has announced that entry will be free until the official inauguration takes place. Plans to boost visits and attract extra in-

come for the area include guided tours of the castle, informative leaflets and a video to be screened at the Fitur travel fair. Renovations to the castle, built between the 14th and 15th centuries, have cost approximately €1 million, 60 per cent of which was subsidised by the Junta de Andalucia regional government.

Pensioner held for husband’s death GUARDIA Civil in Rincon de la Victoria have arrested an 83year-old woman on suspicion of killing her husband. On July 21, the woman alerted the emergency services alleging her 83-year-old husband

had fallen from the couch, sustaining severe injuries to his head. Guardia Civil attended the scene after being contacted by healthcare staff, who took the man to Carlos Haya Hospital in

Malaga, where he died the day after. The officers and medical staff were suspicious of the woman’s version of events, due to the man’s severe injuries, and an investigation was launched.

The main evidence was found on one of the woman’s crutches, where police detected traces of blood, even though it had been recently washed. Forensic analysis revealed that the crutch matched the shape

and depth of the husband’s injuries. The victim’s wife was the only person present at the crime scene. She was taken into custody on July 29 and remanded to prison.

EVICTIONS in Motril are to be a thing of the past thanks to a new law approved unanimously by the town council.

The motion was presented by left-wing party Izquierda Unida (IU) to mitigate the critical situation that hundreds of citizens find themselves in as they are at risk of losing their homes.

The new regulations consider that the council must protect residents and help families who cannot meet mortgage and rent payments, especially those who are suffering abusive clauses in

their contracts. A new anti-eviction office is to be created in the town, to coordinate and determine the necessary steps needed to cover emergency housing situations.

Parasol dispute continues ALTHOUGH Almuñecar Council had announced a ban on leaving belongings on the beach to reserve good spots, last weekend nothing appeared to have changed on the town’s coast.

By 9am, the first rows of parasols had already sprung up while their owners then went off for breakfast or a few more hours’ sleep, and none of the promised signs to enforce the ban could be seen.

“We all have the same right to use the beach. If they don’t want tourists to take the best spots they should get up earlier. We bring income to the area,” said an unrepentant Granada man as he set up his parasol.

Major debt faced by Velez-Malaga council Flickr: Carlos Castro

Local Mayor Oscar Medina and Security councillor Paola Moreno have held a meeting with representatives from the Local Police and Guardia Civil forces to fine tune the special security campaign for the month.

THE Velez-Malaga Council has done their math, and the results are not pleasant. The current local government team through its Financial Department led by Juan Carlos Marquez, announced on Thurs-

The number of officers patrolling the town, in particular Ferrara and El Moche seafronts, will be doubled, the mayor explained. Quad patrols are to be resumed to ensure beach regulations are met, and more officers on duty in the evenings. El Moche fair, running from August 12 to 16, will be supervised by a team of 10 officers.

Raising awareness of diabetes Our Euro Women series is featuring women who have made a success of their lives in Spain. These outstanding ladies have been shattering glass ceilings whether in business, charity work or sports. Anne Bowles has a busy life supporting diabetic sufferers and fundraising for charity.

ANNE BOWLES is a woman who possesses an incredible amount of energy and enthusiasm which has been the key factor in how she has achieved so much in her life here in Spain. After marrying Frank in England in 1975, Anne was already showing the world what talents she had when they both began singing in a barbershop choir in Surrey. She tells me that was one of the best periods of her life as she enjoyed socialising, organising, and travelling to many singing events, entering into all she did with a passion. Anne and Frank decided to make a new life in Spain, so they bought a home here in 1975, and in no time at all their social life was booming. One unfortunate setback was that Frank suffered with diabetes and there was little help in Spain at that time for anyone with similar problems. A friend of theirs, Martin, also had diabetes and this was a condition that needed to be addressed as well as also raising awareness in others. It was this realisation that initiated the good work that Anne is continuing to do today. The Diabetic Support Group (DSG) was founded by Anne and Frank Bowles with the co-operation of Martin and Barbara Rhead in 2003 and the group has helped hundreds of sufferers come to terms with their condition and lead a normal life. Anne is a believer that knowledge is power, and this was her

aim in life, to give those sufferers the vital information they needed that could, and has, saved their lives. With much help from the local Lions group, the organisation began its operation with the added support of Dr Francisco M Gomez Trujillo of the Beafranin Clinic in Fuengirola, who had studied in the USA, and also a Finnish doctor, Dr Matti Tolonen, a nutritionist. After years of helping others, Anne also became a member of La Cala Lions and both her and husband Frank were

Together they were heavily involved in the inauguration of the Costa del Sol Golf News in 2005, which grew from strength to strength due to Anne’s networking and massive input to the growth of the business. She juggled her

commitments with the Lions and her diabetic support group with her social networking that made the Costa del Sol Golf News a household name, and still she had the energy for more. In her free time she still performed and organised events for the Barbershop Choir Spain, and raised money for charity too. Sadly, some years later she lost the love of her life, Frank, but that has made her stronger, as she remembers how he believed in her and gave her the confidence to achieve so much. Anne went on to be President of La Cala Lions last year and within that time raised €80,000 for various beneficiaries. When asked what kind of people she preferred to be with, she said “I like positive people and those with a good sense of humour. Life is precious so we have to rise above difficult situations. I like people who are firm but fair.” Anne has granted many wishes of others, and asked if she had a wish that she would like granted, she said with her usual sense of humour “Yes... to have long, curly hair and no wrinkles.”

UK Foreign Office Minister speaks on EU referendum concerns MANY expats are worried about the consequences they would face if Britain were to leave the EU By Steve Walsh FOR some time, readers of the Euro Weekly News have been seeking answers to some questions, namely: What will happen if the UK decides to leave the European Union after the referendum, and where will it leave us expatriates? We put the questions to the Foreign Office and Minister of State for International Development, The Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, during an interview when he visited Malaga last week (July 29-30). He was on the Costa del Sol to present the local tourist police with a Certificate of Excellence to recognise the quality of work the Malaga office carries out in supporting British nationals in Spain. Minister Shapps also visited the British Consulate in Malaga and the Global Contact Centre for expatriates, which under the adept wing of British Consul Charmaine

to consider, there are major concerns over the repercussions of a vote to withdraw from the EU. Minister Shapps feels those are consequences we are not going to face. “My per-

sonal opinion is that the British people will vote to stay in the EU. Not the EU as it is now, however, but a remodelled EU, an organisation more like the old Common Market that we signed up to originally after the previous referendum in 1975,” he said. There’s no precedent or procedure yet in place should voters choose the withdrawal option, but the minister assured expatriates that the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) had started making sure information would be accessible. “Apart from the information services online, I am here today!” Shapps declared. He concluded: “I wish to impress on the expat community in Spain how important it is to register to vote. We are going to scrap the 15-year limit on voting, we promised that in our manifesto, but people living in Spain will need to register with their last UK local council to be able to have a voice in the referendum. It’s very important.”

Spain’s traffic cops gear up for flood of holiday traffic By Eleanor Hawkins DGT Spanish traffic authority launched phase two of the summer Operacion Salida road campaign on Friday, July 31 to keep the 43.2 million vehicles expected in August under control. The second phase of the outgoing travellers campaign lasted until Sunday, August 2, and is not the last, as another is planned for August 14-16 and return travel campaigns beginning between August 28 and 31. Weekend controls are also set to continue through the summer with speed-traps placed on dangerous stretches of road, DGT director Maria Segui explained. The location of these traps can be viewed on the authority’s website. Altogether, 10,000 Guardia Civil traffic officers are assigned to surveillance duties over the summer months, with 80 per cent of their time spent on secondary roads. Reversible and

additional lanes are to be put in place on stretches where the most traffic is registered and road works halted in some areas to avoid jamming the roads, Segui said. Officers will also be paying special attention to the roadworthiness of vehicles and checking tyres and whether MOTs have been passed. The DGT has stressed that although the financial situation in the country is improving, leading more people to travel this year, vehicles are generally old, increasing the risk of accidents. Operacion Paso del Estrecho also took place last weekend which saw an estimated 150,000 people in approximately 40,000 vehicles crossing the Straits to northern Africa from the Algeciras area. Falling population SPAIN to lose six million inhabitants over the coming decades Flickr by H.KoPP

SMALL CHANGE: Can produce hugh differences after a few decades. By Maria Jose Fernandez SPAIN is expected to lose at least six million inhabitants over the coming decades, said the UN. The UN estimates there are currently 46.1 million inhabitants in Spain, a figure which predictions say will drop to 45.9 million by 2030 and 44.8 million by 2050. In the second half of this century, the population of Spain is expected to slide below 40 million inhabitants.

The authors of this study explained that, in any case, these predictions would depend on the rate of fertility of the country, as a small change could produce huge differences after a few decades. The strong demographic growth in Africa, where women have on average 4.7 children, will make the world population rocket above 10 billion inhabitants, according to the UN. There are currently around 7.3 billion inhabitants worldwide, and it is expected to

reach 8.5 billion by 2030 and 9.7 billion by 2050. In the year 2100, calculations estimate that there will be 11.2 billion inhabitants in the world, mainly caused by the rapid growth of developing countries. “The concentration of population growth in the poorest countries presents several challenges: making the eradication of poverty and inequalities more difficult, combating hunger and malnutrition and widening access to health care and education,” said a UN representative.

MALLORCA

ELCHE’S Mystery Play, or ‘Festa’, is one of the most renowned theatrical performances in the world. The sacred musical drama depicts the death, the passage into Heaven (known as the Assumption) and the crowning of the Virgin Mary. It is performed every year in two acts on August 14 and 15 in the city. More than 300 volunteers are involved in the play each year. It is sung entirely in Valencian and some Latin and has been performed at the Basilica of Santa Maria for centuries. Its origins are believed to date back to around the 13th century, although some historians would put its origins at nearer the 15th century. The Mystery Play is also famous for its split level stage which includes the vertical ‘celestial’ stage, which descends from the dome of the basilica. The play is part of the city’s identity and heritage and the perseverance and affection of the people of Elche have converted the Mystery Play into the last surviving performances of its kind.

Euro manages to trade within a tight range as Greece still in zone ROLLER-COASTER JULY: Euro touched eight-year lows against the Pound.

Ask the expert Peter Loveday Contact me at euroweekly@currenciesdirect.com

WITH Greece having reached an agreement which ensured a bailout, keeping the country in the Eurozone, the relatively weak Euro has managed to trade within a tight range. Business, consumer and economic sentiment seem to be higher than ever and, as analysts forecast, Mario Draghi’s quantitative easing measures could bring about a much-needed boost to inflation. In recent developments, comments from Germany’s independent economic advisers that countries should be able to leave the Euro as a ‘last resort’ could imply that the worries are still not over for Greece. The Syriza party has been criticised for plotting to leave the Eurozone as it was also revealed that the former finance

minister had a blueprint prepared for Greece to run a parallel banking system including reverting to the Drachma. Markets will look for further direction in

currency movements, as the focus turns towards monetary policy in the major economies. With the US and the UK having signalled the possibility of likely interest rates hikes in the next

few quarters respectively, the Euro could come under sustained pressure. Having been forced to inject further liquidity into the economy to boost deflationary pressures in the Eurozone, the single bloc currency could be considerably volatile leading up to and after the Federal Reserve FOMC meeting, which was scheduled for July 29. Should the Federal Reserve send out a hawkish tone and an outline/framework to exit its monetary easing policy, the Euro will bear the brunt of it, weakening further. It has been a roller-coaster of a month for the Euro as it touched eight-year lows against the Pound as GBPEUR touched a high of 1.44. Volatility for the near term looks set to continue – and in the Euro’s case, things are not looking very bright. Having recovered to levels of 1.40 against Sterling, the Euro has traded within a tight range although the current scenario could just be the calm before the storm

More interest IT appears that, partly thanks to the number of repossessions which have taken place, there has been an increase in interest in property in Spain and prices are rising slightly.

British investors buy Spain’s ‘ghost airport’ at bargain price

Profits boom SPANISH-owned AENA airports authority has announced that its profits have increased by a staggering 80 per cent to €276 million, thanks in part to taking over Luton Airport, a rise in passenger numbers and higher sales in retail.

Fewer strikes SPAIN has recently seen fewer strikes than in the past and unions are in negotiations with employers to increase wages. Latest discussions between the parties will see an overall increase of 1 per cent in 2015.

Bank’s hopes DESPITE divesting its retail holdings in Spain to La Caixa, Barclays Bank analysts have indicated that they see an ongoing and positive recovery within the Spanish economy.

‘GHOST’ AIRPORT: Ciudad Real Airport which cost €1 billion to build, opened in 2008 but closed four years later in 2012. BUILT at an estimated cost of €1 billion, Ciudad Real Airport in the CastillaLa Mancha area opened in 2008 but was closed in 2012 as it failed to attract either airlines or passengers. In the whole of 2010, it saw just 33,000 passengers pass through its ter-

minal and only budget airline Ryanair used its facilities for a while. When that airline pulled out, the local government subsidised three flights a week but even they were soon withdrawn. Now the so-called ‘Madrid South’ airport (it is ‘just’ 125 miles from Madrid)

which was looking for offers in the region of €80 million, has been sold in part to a UK/Asian consortium for just €10,000 (£7,000). The sale, which includes the runway, control tower but not the terminal or parking area, has attracted a few Chinese

companies who may be interested in investing further so that the airport becomes a major entry point into Europe. It may be just one of the many failed projects to emerge following the recession, but this one at least may one day rise like a phoenix from the ashes.

Trusted independent financial adviser I HAVE been a financial adviser for close to 30 years and in that time there have been many changes affecting how I earn my living. Possibly the largest of these has been the growing ability for private investors to research and arrange their own financial affairs using the internet. Yet despite this, demand for trusted independent financial advice has never been greater. Before looking at why, I would like to highlight that all advisers are not the same far from it. In Spain there is a huge gulf between expatriate financial advisory firms in terms of business practices, adviser qualifications and experience. At one extreme there are product sales focused firms with commission-only salespeople (advisers) who may have limited knowledge or experience. At the other end are client-focused truly independent firms employing highly qualified advisers with many years of practical knowledge and experience. How do I define trusted independent financial advice? A service provided by a professional financial adviser, whose interests are firmly aligned with clients. This means

FRY GROUP: Work with clients to build mutually beneficial trust.

putting myself in each client’s position and identifying and recommending only investments and planning that I would use myself if I had the same set of circumstances and requirements. To do this (apart from the required knowledge and experience) is the ability to offer solutions from a broad spectrum of options and providers. In Spain as in the UK, The Fry Group uses the UK’s full disclosure no-commission approach as our starting point. This means advice is unfettered when it comes to selecting the best options. This also means that charges for work are always agreed in advance allowing discussion and sometimes healthy negotiation. Firms and advisers relying on commissiondriven sales can never fully align their interests with their clients due to a natural conflict between impartially selecting appropriate financial planning solutions and how they are paid; not by the customer but by their product suppliers. The financial circumstances of the adviser is also important in that they should not be under financial or management pressure to

take on new clients and/or to obtain new client money. The big banks and many other firms may not agree with my view but this is because their financial advisers are in most cases heavily targeted and remunerated only based on new money they obtain from investors. This means that there is often limited incentive to build a long-term trustworthy relationship. The fact is that trust in all its forms is only achieved over time based on a person or organisation living up to expectations and promises. I am fortunate in that The Fry Group are a well-established and well-trusted (by families through the generations) business. As an individual (as with my colleagues) I enjoy a stable working environment that allows me the time to work with our clients and build mutually beneficial trust based relationships.

Police lose public’s respect BOYS and Girls in Blue have only themselves to blame LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT LET me state from the outset, that I do retain a certain amount of sympathy for officers of the law. According to some of the crime reality shows, the abuse they have to contend with can be truly horrendous. Another thing that becomes glaringly apparent is that most of the respect the public had for the police is now pretty much nonexistent. I am actually old enough to remember my utter shock when I saw the police referred to as ‘cops’ in an English newspaper. Prior to that it was only in American publications that they were referred to in this somewhat derogatory manner. So what’s gone wrong? Where does the fault actually lie for this change in the public’s attitude toward modern-day law enforcement? Well, with apologies to the Boys and Girls in Blue, I think you have only yourselves to blame. The problem with the police is that their

LONG GONE: The days of respect and trust for the police. career advancement and subsequent earning capacity always relies on the number of convictions they obtain. This puts them permanently and firmly in the camp of the prosecution. Believe me, most investigators

consider a successful prosecution a victory and an acquittal a defeat. Over the years, this apparent attitude and determination to convict at almost any cost has slowly but surely eroded almost all the

trust and respect previously enjoyed by the ‘Blue Lamp’ Dixons of the past. Cases like the Wimbledon ‘honey trap’ in the Rachel Nickell/Colin Stagg fiasco and the Jill Dando/Barry George affair, have slowly stripped away the public’s often blind faith in British justice. And remember... these are only the cases you hear about. What about all the innocent ‘little people’ who are serving time, merely to look good on an officer’s arrest and conviction record? I myself became a victim of this unacceptable practice, when a four-page witness statement, which would have most definitely helped my self-defence intentions, was mysteriously whittled down to a few lines that bore no resemblance to the original, which had simply ‘disappeared!’ No, I’m afraid the police have long travelled past the point of no return, and the days of respect and trust for this previously-admired institution have gone forever. Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002 @gmail.com

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Carrying a load AS part of a new series, we answer some common driving questions, kindly provided by members of the Guardia Civil based in Torrevieja, Costa Blanca, who set up the N332 website and Facebook page to help break down barriers.

SAFELY STORED: Any load must not project from your vehicle. MANY people ask about rules regarding carrying a load in cars. The N332 team clarify that if you are driving a vehicle that is carrying a load, you have to make sure that the load is restrained properly. Local restraint is not just about making sure that the load does not come off, it is about making sure that the load does not shift in a way that makes the vehicle unsafe to handle or allows the load to crash into the driver’s cabin which may cause injury or death in the event of a traffic accident. The Spanish Traffic Law requires that any load carried on or in your vehicle must not be placed in a way that makes your vehicle unsafe or unstable. It must be

secured so that it won’t move or fall from your vehicle while driving; including driving consisting of emergency braking or turning suddenly. The law states any load must not project from your vehicle in a way that is likely to injure a person, obstruct the path of other drivers or pedestrians or damage another vehicle or anything else. It must be restrained using an appropriate load restraint method. Anything on the back seats must be secured with seat belts but it is advisable not to carry anything in the car, you should always use the boot. In the case you need to carry a load in the vehicle, use the seat belts to secure it or use a car net.

Is Community responsible for drains? I LIVE on an estate more than 30 years old and my property is what we call in the UK mid-terraced. On three occasions in the last few years, I have had drainage/sewage contractors come into my house and through a trap in my kitchen clear out effluent and waste which accumulates belo w m y h o u se a n d th e neighbouring properties as As you describe it, this seems to be a problem with Community drainage and sewage systems. If your neighbour is reluctant to act, you must approach the Community. The President on his own can authorise the

well. It appears that four adjoining properties are served by a gully underneath. The contractors tell me that there is a break in this gully which can only be accessed through the floor of my neighbour’s kitchen. The neighbour refuses to take any steps to resolve the issue. What action can I take?

David Searl You and the Law in Spain

The President can authorise repairs and access.

B.B (Costa Blanca) repairs and require the neighbour to permit access. Failing this, you can request a vote by the AGM. Please note that, if the Community sewage simply runs into a gully, i t s h o u l d p ro p e r l y b e connected to mains drains.

ART is not about understanding, it is about how it makes you feel, I have always remembered that Colin Bird A weekly look Each week, Colin brings his slightly off-the-wall view of the world to the pages of EWN in his own irreverent style.

I AM an art lover. Not because I am knowledgeable or that I have an appreciation for any particular subject matter. No, it’s just that I envy those who are able to pick up a brush or palette knife and convert a blank canvas into something that is pleasing to the eye. Many years ago, an artist acquaintance - who was then of the abstract school - asked me if I liked a particular piece he had produced. I confirmed I did, but admitted I did not understand it. It is not about understanding, he admonished me, it is about how it makes you feel. And I have always remembered that. My Dad was fairly artistic - drawing, painting and making useful stuff and I have wondered why I inherited none of his talent. Was I a foundling discovered by my parents on the doorstep one morning? Am I in fact the milkman’s son? Perhaps I was selected for greater things? In which case I am still waiting.

CHAOTIC: August traffic.

Stay safe on the roads

ARTISTIC ABILITIES: Perhaps I was selected for greater things? Dad was a good whistler too, and I have never been able to do that. I did have a go at sculpting in my younger days, and although I usually ended up with something I was quite proud of, it bore no resemblance to the original planned piece. I had to work my 10-pound clay lump to such an ex-

tent - carving off chunks here and modifying bits there - that my intended sculpture of a unicorn, for instance, finished up looking like a chihuahua. But a nice looking chihuahua. I have seen a sporty set of wood carving tools in a small local ferretería and I am very tempted to give it a go.

Okay, I might not know the difference between a piece of oak and a sheet of chipboard, but I am going to look pretty darn cool showing off my artesan tools to my friends. And I have high hopes - after all, as a kid, I was expert at whittling chunks of tree down to useful pointy sticks.

When an economy collapses INVESTMENTS, pensions, life savings; everything one puts by for a secure future disappears Mike Walsh Mike, based in Mediterranean Spain, is an international journalist, author and professional writer.

HOW is society affected when an economy collapses? I have family and friends who twice experienced calamitous economic meltdown. Again, Ukrainians today find it near impossible to make ends meet; 40 per cent are unable to pay utility bills, yet it is predicted that prices in Ukraine will again double before Christmas. The tax base collapses, services, schools, social entitlements, law and order are curtailed, the transport infrastructure abandoned. Depending on racial or class division, widespread disorder may be presumed. This is happening in the US. Neighbourliness evaporates; everyone becomes a competitor in the struggle for survival.

ECONOMIC MELTDOWN: Every man for himself.

Shock sets in. Most people assume normal supply of utilities, gas, water, electricity and the internet. How do you pay bills if banks are closed, your job has gone, your deposits ‘frozen’? Investments, pensions, life savings; everything one puts by for a secure future disappears. The shop shelves are empty. The ‘system’ becomes the enemy. Government buildings and institutions like banks become the focus for community despair and revenge. As Gerald Celente surmised: “When people lose everything and have nothing else to lose, they lose it.” Is this why the Spanish government rushed through controversial laws designed to make anti-government protest a felony, seemingly attracting

AUGUST is officially Spain’s holiday month and sees the largest amount of holidaymakers. The roads are full of tourists trying to find their way round the country and the stress factor for drivers goes through the roof. Spanish traffic police launched their special summer operation on August 1, to try to control the roads and make sure motorists keep their speed down, obey the rules and generally stay safe on the road. Sadly, in the first weekend of August (August 1-2) there has already been as many as 18 deaths from traffic accidents, according to the traffic authority DGT. In one of the most horrific, three young children were killed when their car collided with a lorry and another child and an adult were injured. In July, as many as 111 people died in car accidents in Spain, an increase of 3 per cent over last year. Driving at speed on busy roads, even within legal limits, puts people’s lives in danger and whether it is tourists or commuters racing down Spain’s highways, drivers need to be well aware of the dangers and never let their guard down, especially in the chaos of the August holidays. Taking the utmost care keeping speeds sensible, showing patience and good manners, and being fully aware of your surroundings and the behaviour of fellow drivers is essential to coping with driving in Spain this summer.

penalties greater than does murder? It is an every man for himself situation. The kids are going hungry; there is breakdown in law and order. Farmers’ fields are gun-guarded as are homes. It is open season on those perceived as rich or considered corrupt. Shopping as we know it ceases. We enter a community service of self-sufficiency, bartering one’s service or goods in exchange for food and clothing. The black market mushrooms and scavengers thrive; they are not too fussy about ownership. A police crackdown is to be expected. This is heavy-handed and creates a backlash. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) A business colleague may be less than honest with you. When it is a small matter you are used to them bending the truth. This is not, however, something that you will want to let go by, so stay on your toes. On the home front, you tend to be snappy with loved ones because you are feeling stressed.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Having been dashing about like a mad thing, you find this week a refreshing change. Only when you slow down do you realise how much you have been doing and just how tired you have become. There are some social

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) A mistake seems a small thing until someone notices it. Although you feel that they are making a mountain out of a molehill, it still leaves a nasty feeling. Get out and do something completely different at the weekend. Not only will it blow the cobwebs away, but it will also put in perspective any negative thoughts.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) As someone is not showing the required amount of interest in your activities, you need a plan. Telephoning them and pointing out what you have achieved is one way, but it's not cool. Getting a few people together and using someone else to blow your trumpet for you is better.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Avoid getting involved in other people's arguments. There is no way that you can come out a winner if you do. Taking a step backwards is sometimes the best thing. You have been down this path before, and did your intervention do any good? Go and trim the roses or sort out those rockery stones instead.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) By using your intuition midweek, you will be able to solve a small problem at the weekend. Thinking ahead sometimes seems a waste of time to you because circumstances have a way of changing, but it makes sense to put in a bit of extra effort if you are able to avoid aggravation.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Getting a romantic situation wrong could cause a humourous moment this weekend. I am not telling you this so you can avoid it. You could do with a good laugh right now. Planning ahead is your preferred method but sometimes it is the last-minute decision that brings the best results.

From Russia, with experience and first-hand knowledge WHILE Mike Walsh does address some topical subjects areas quite sensibly, I do find that he gets a bit carried away with his comments when it comes to Russia and Putin. Putin is ex-KGB and probably committed quite a lot of dirty deeds during his time with this organisation. I worked for 14 years in Russia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan. I have first-hand knowledge and actual experiences on which to base my opinions relating to this subject. For a part of that time I was employed by a company owned by one Mikhail Khodorkovsky, a Switzerlandbased Russian exile, and former Russian businessman and philanthropist who spent a decade in jail on trumpedup tax charges after falling out with Vladimir Putin after he decided to stand for president. I was also in Georgia when the Russians engineered a breach of the ceasefire that gave the Russians the opportunity to invade. As much as two weeks before the actual invasion itself we were hearing rumours that up to 100 tanks were being assembled at the North Ossetia entrance to the tunnel that joined the two Ossetias. After the invasion I actually saw what they did to Gori and I heard some absolutely appalling stories about what Russian troops did from our local workforce living there. First-hand knowledge and experience has a significant influence in forming opinions Ian Terry (by email)

Leap too far IN response to an article written by Mr ‘Leapy’ Lee in your 16-22 July 2015 issue, women historically have been subjected to co-ordinated efforts by governments to control their fertility, including sterilisation abuse. Indeed in 1849, the US proposed sterilisation for ‘undesirables’. Other reasons included those deemed to be mentally ‘unfit’ to have a child and for economic reasons, such as in 1965 when 30 per cent of the women in Puerto Rico were forcibly sterilised because there were ‘too many workers’. Of course how could we forget the

Are dog owners in Fuengirola selfish?

Well informed?

With regard to dogs here in Fuengirola, it seems to me that some of the dog owners in this town are the most selfish and ignorant that I have come across. There are many dogs on my urbanisation. People think “Oooh, wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog?” Then they get one, and tootle off to work each day leaving it to bark all day long for the pleasure of us poor retired folk to endure. Then they come home and take them for a walk and let them poop all over the place. I am sick to death with the amount of excrement that covers the pavements, it’s like a minefield here. There are supposed to be fines for those who do not clean up after their dogs, but I’ve never seen or heard of anyone ever being caught and having to pay these fines, have you? Maybe you could let us know? It’s time for Fuengirola to introduce dog wardens to implement these fines and bring these selfish owners to book once and for all. Miguel Mora (by email) PS: Enjoyed reading your article on the newly-installed ‘Park of Life’ (Costa del Sol edition) so the public can enjoy a nice cool area at the beach. So l went to have a look; unfortunately, the lovely grass (that we are supposed to be able to sit/lie on) was covered with dog poo!!

‘Final Solution’ and the Nazi extermination camps. Countless women were sterilised by this evil regime. Of course they were the ‘lucky’ ones. Once again women with mental or physical disabilities were first, then gypsies and Jews; as you know the list goes on. Why am I writing this? Well, I have just read another uninformed and rather pathetic rant by your illustrious Leapy Lee. As you know he has advocated enforced sterilisation of unemployed women in the UK. Now even the Nazis didn’t sterilise women because they were unemployed! What next, euthanasia? J Charters (by email)

Bite back REGARDING the letter Bitten to Death, I can sympathise with Catherine as I am also bothered by mosquito and other types of insect bites. Firstly, my husband has installed mosquito nets on all windows and

doors. Secondly, we find our neighbours’ conifers are a haven for mosquitoes. Therefore, we purchase insecticide from the garden centres specifically to prevent the infestation and spray the trees accordingly. This does help to reduce the mosquitoes living in them. Thirdly, some years ago whilst on holiday in Spain, we met up with a doctor friend and he was concerned at the swelling around one of my ankles, an allergic reaction to insect bites. The spots become like large boils and can cause swelling. He gave me some Claritin antihistamines to take. I found that I didn’t seem to have more bites whilst I was on that holiday. My friend advised me that I was probably still being bitten but the tablets were preventing the reaction. My own doctor then prescribed Claritin for me to take whilst on holiday. When collecting my prescription, the assistant kindly informed me that I could buy Loratadine tablets cheaper. This is the ingredient that relieves the symptoms of hayfever, pet and other

skin allergies such as insect bites. Loratadine tablets are lot cheaper and work for me and others I know. I hope this information will be of help to Catherine and others. Lesley Dawson, Alicante

Campo noise I READ your article on page 4 entitled ‘Time to keep noise promises’ (Almeria edition). Do we in the campo not also have a ‘derecho a dormir’ (right to sleep)? Who will protest for us when the many dog sheds around here have wall-to-wall dog barking lasting all night because it’s too hot for them to bark in the daytime? We hear that in Mojacar there also are restrictions on bars and restaurants’ noise levels, but there seem to be no restrictions outside town where people also live. Surely people everywhere are entitled to some sleep, not just in the towns. I suppose it will be the same old argument, we are the ones that moved

I’M not surprised that Joseph Billet was dumbfounded by Mike Walsh’s throwaway reference to the 100 scientists supposedly killed in the MH17 disaster. I hope Joseph means that he is dumbfounded that Mike should expect us to believe such an absurd bit of conspiracy theory, but I have a nasty feeling that he means he is overwhelmed by Mike’s deep knowledge of the world and what makes things happen. In fact, in Mike’s latest article, he wheels out all the nonsense he has churned out many times before. Everyone knows that most people in Europe did not want World War II to break out. However, any intelligent reading of the history of the 1930s shows that Hitler caused the war, by continually pushing for more power and territory. He got away with it for a long time, just because Britain and other nations were reluctant to take the unpopular step of declaring war. Does Mike think we should not have done that? And has he stopped to think what the consequences of a Nazi takeover of the continent would have meant? He is right in one thing. History is indeed repeating itself, with Putin grabbing land and intimidating his neighbours, just as Hitler did. The US economy does not depend on perpetual war. And what on earth is Mike trying to prove by calling the US a small country that would fit into the Sahara, while in fact it has about 300 million citizens? Let’s have no more of this sort of rubbish! Bill Campbell, Mojácar Playa, Almeria

Looking Good, Staying Trim

DEPENDING on your genetics, you may be naturally blessed with a slim waist. For women especially this is a visually pleasing aesthetic attribute, as the curve of the waist is deemed as rather attractive. There are three basic body shape categories that apply to us, these are • Ectomorph tall lean athletic shape - does not gain weight easily • Mesomorph hourglass curvy shape - builds muscle easily, gains weight more easily than an Ectomorph • Endomorph stocky, solid and round bodied - has

strong muscles especially the legs, not so well defined, gains both muscle and fat easily. Training your upper body, paying particular attention to your shoulders, can give the attractive appearance of a narrower waist. The broader and more sculpted your shoulders are, the narrower your waist will appear, giving you a strong aesthetically pleasing balanced body shape. Recommended exercises: • Dumbbell shoulder presses • Dumbbell side shoulder raises • Dumbbell front shoulder raises • Seated rear delt raises NB: Ensure you always warm up before performing any of these exercises.

Super spaghetti can reduce heart disease risk RESEARCHERS at Spain’s University of Granada, in collaboration with two Italian universities, have developed ‘super spaghetti’ which they claim has more fibre and protein than regular pasta. The University of Granada said this enriched pasta helps reduce cardiovascular risk by being prepared with functional flours. It has been created with the Technological Research and Development Centre of Functional Food (CIDAF) to demonstrate how new technologies can get clean functional flours using wholegrain cereal, avoiding the formation of waste products in the milling process. Air classification is used to divide the flour into different fractions without altering its properties. These fractions have different chemical characteristics and can be used depending on the final

product to be obtained. The researchers’ final spaghetti product is rich in beta glucans, compared to other pasta on the market, which can help reduce the risk of heart diseases.

Quick hair fix not a regular solution DRY shampoo is a beauty quick fix for many people who need to bring a bit of life back to unwashed hair when time is short, but could it come at a cost? British men and women are the world’s biggest consumers of dry shampoo, with one in four having a can but hairdressers and trichologists warn that overuse can cause unexpected consequences including itchy, flaky scalps, sores and even bald patches. Whilst phenomenally popular, they say it is ideal for one off-use, but is not designed to be used on a regular basis. It contains an oil-absorbing substance which is deposited on the hair to soak up the grease but if it’s used constantly it can dry out the hair and the scalp and make it flaky.

Cultural events attract a crowd THERE are many more events still to come

CHILDREN’S DAY: Will offer discounts on rides at the fairground.

All the fun of the fair RIDES, music and dance available in the evenings FAIR-LOVERS are in luck this week as there are two annual fairs running in the area. In Almuñecar, festivities begin this Sunday (August 9) and run until Saturday 15 with daytime celebrations on Calle Pintor Manuel Rivera from Monday 10 to Thursday 14 between 1pm and 7pm. Rides, music and dance will be available in the evenings at the fairground on Paseo Blas Infante, with the Dia del Niño (children’s day)

offering discounts on rides on Monday August 10. Meanwhile in Motril the fair in honour of the Virgen de la Cabeza patron saint runs from August 11 to 17. This year Motril aims to attract more visitors than ever and has prepared a bumper programme with music and activities for all the family. The council sought the opinions of local groups to redesign the daytime fair, which will be spread across

various neighbourhoods on August 12 to 14 and hopes to become a tourist attraction. “We’ve organised entertainment for all ages, a fair everyone can take part in,” said local Mayor Flor Almon. More lights have been installed to make the Cortijo del Conde fairground shine more than ever this year, the mayor said, announcing they would be switched on to officially launch the fair on Tuesday 11. Children are in luck this year, Almon announced, as there will be two Dias del Niño with cheaper rides, on Tuesday and Sunday. Musical events will include concerts by local rock bands on Tuesday 11, Spanish ‘copla’ by Joana Jimenez on Wednesday 12, a children’s musical, El Rey de la Sabana, on Thursday 13 at the municipal caseta at 10pm (tickets between €10 and €15) followed by a free concert by La Voz TV competition finalist Rafa Gutierrez and Motril Funk Festival on Friday night. There will also be a bullfight on Friday 14, a street procession on Saturday 15 and the final touch will be provided with a concert by popular singer Abraham Mateo on Sunday 16. The final party will be held on Playa de Poniente beach at 11pm on Monday 17.

MULTIPLE CONCERTS: Held in La Najarra gardens.

By Eleanor Hawkins ALMUÑECAR’S Cultural Department has reported that cultural calendar events attracted a whopping total of 22,150 people in July and has many more events lined up for this month. Councillor Olga Ruano reported that the most successful July event was the Jazz Festival, which attracted approximately 15,000 people, followed in popularity by the Minerals Fair with 5,000 visitors. Smaller but no less popular events included multiple concerts at La Najarra gardens, a candlelight concert and a Queen Tribute show. Upcoming events in the town include a con-

cert by Forasteros this Saturday, August 8, at 10pm at La Najarra gardens and a flamenco show by Tomas Garcia and Camerata Bardi in the same place on Sunday (tickets €10 available from Contreras bookshop and Viajes Ecuador). On Monday (August 10) there will be a free concert by the municipal band starting at 10pm on Plaza de la Constitucion and a flamenco show by Manuel Aire and Compas at the La Najarra gardens (tickets €5). On Wednesday a hip-hop concert, Boom Bap! Almuñecar Summer Jam 3, begins at 7.30pm at Parque El Majuelo. Tickets are available from Halcon Viajes and Viajes Ecuador.

A great turnout for jazz evening ONE FOR MY BABY jazz band presented its record One Destination at a sold out event in La Najarra Gardens, Almuñecar, last weekend. Come with me, one of three pieces included in the record which the band-

members composed themselves, got the evening off to a start before the crowd was entertained with general pieces. The band, consisting of Belgian singer Dirk Van Halewyck, Jacinto Rodriguez (piano), Jorge Garcia

Quirantes (alto saxophone), Jesus Mata (tenor saxophone and flute), Jimi Garcia (trumpet), Miguel Angel Pimental (double bass) and Jose Uribe (drums), made full use of its experience and stage presence to give everyone a great night out.

Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

ALTHOUGH the weather is hot, indeed very hot at times, many plants will benefit from a summer pruning. But do this late evening at sunset or early morning before the sun is up. The potential benefits are as follows: A. Continuity of flowers. This is particularly important with roses, all annuals, perennials including geraniums and leonotis and shrubs such as plumbago and lantanas. B. The removal of untidy dead flower heads. As for ‘a’ plus bulbs such as gladioli and lilies; aromatic herbs like rosemary, lavender and rue; perennials such as margaritas, gazanias and pelargoniums. C. The collection of seed heads for seeds for next year. Easy ones to grow are hollyhocks, marigolds, mirabilis, yellow lantanas and sweetpeas. D. A tidier garden. Just look around weekly and see what is starting to look out of place or getting in the way. E. Stopping the best external and internal views from being blocked out by exuberant growth. F. Ensuring that the overhang of hedges and trees over outside pavements remains safe. Unfortunately this may mean removing flowering branches as we do with oleander, honeysuckle, bougainvillaeas and bignonias. G. The stimulation of larger fruits. If fruit bushes or trees have a very heavy crop of small fruits remove some fruits on each branch. H. The preparation of cuttings and the propagation of young plants for planting out next year. Try summer cuttings of carnations, mock orange, geraniums/pelargoniums, mesums, leonotis, bignonias, hibiscus, lantanas, succulents, sages, etc.

I. Safety. The lower branches of palms and spiky ends of yuccas, agaves, cacti and other spiky plants need cutting off during the summer especially if near paths or terraces. J. To continue to be able to see the fish in the pond. We regularly remove excess aerating weeds and excessive numbers of waterlily leaves. K. To train large shrubs and trees to cover up eyesores such as the garden shed and a new development down the road, or on the hillside above. Just a couple of hours a week with secateurs will ensure a neat and enviable summer garden. Best of luck. Your efforts can be rewarded with a large sundowner, unless your medical tapas dishes forbid, or a Spanish breakfast with a glass of summer wine, i.e. wine diluted 50 per cent with lemonade or aerated water. PRUNING OLEANDERS Our general recommendations re the pruning of oleanders are as follows. If you have a large garden, grow them as specimen bushes or standard trees and merely prune to keep tidy. Boundary hedges can become leggy unless pruned. We suggest you prune a third to half of the height every three years to stimulate thicker bushes and flowering shoots. If you have only a small or moderate garden with internal oleander hedges you may find it effective to cut two thirds of the branches back to 50 centimetres every three years leaving just a few flowering branches in the cutting year. Recognise that pruning will keep bushes down to a manageable size and stimulate an ever increasing network of flowering spurs. You will notice that those that flower most prolifically are those that are left a free rein to grow. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com August 2015

shape. Cats are considered old or senior at 10 years of age and thought of as geriatric when they reach 12-15 years. If you notice weight loss in your cat, it could be down to a decreased sense of smell and taste. Digestion is also more difficult as they age and it may be better to feed them much smaller meals more frequently. However, weight loss can also signal disease so you may want to consult a vet. Just like humans, older cats tend to be less active but this can contribute to stiffening

Newborn kittens don’t have the reflex as it depends on a combination of eye and inner ear messages

CATS do have a ‘righting reflex’ that operates when they fall. The first thing that happens is the brain commands the head and neck muscles to put the head ‘square’ with the ground. Then the rest of the body aligns itself with the head and, hey presto, the cat

joints. In the cold weather they are more sensitive to cold and you may notice that their coats are not in a healthy condition. ends up in a perfect position for a soft landing. The cat is able to do this because it has an extremely flexible backbone and no functional collar-bone. Newborn kittens don’t have this reflex, as it depends on a combination of eye and inner ear messages. It might seem reasonable to assume that the greater the height of the fall, the worse the injuries. This is, however, only true up to a level of seven storeys; after that the fracture rate actually decreases. This is because after dropping for a distance of about five storeys, the cat reaches maximum speed, the so-called terminal velocity of a falling body. At this point, the speed is constant and thus the inner ear is no longer aware and stimulated by acceleration. So the cat relaxes and spreads its legs out just as a free-fall parachutist does when he is stabilising his descent. On landing, relaxed bodies are much less likely to fracture, which is also true of infants, and adults who are drunk

Puppy trafficking trade is putting lives at risk AN undercover investigation into the puppy smuggling trade has discovered that underage and unvaccinated puppies are being transported illegally from certain Eastern European countries. Many of the puppies are sold online to customers in other European countries, including the UK. Some commercial dealers and breeders are selling the animals to members of the public, who often have no idea of their condition. The charity Dogs Trust Today revealed this illegal trade back in November 2014, not long after EU pet travel rules were relaxed. As a result, the EU regulation on

pet travel came into force in December 2014 but the changes, as predicted by the charity, did not go far enough. The risks of this smuggling operation, mean the puppies’ health is potentially in danger as well as that of humans. Cases of rabies have occurred in France, Spain and the Netherlands after dogs or cats were imported illegally. The Dogs Trust have also discovered that some corrupt vets and breeders in Lithuania and Romania are contributing to the problem and puppies are often brought across Europe illegally under a legitimate scheme that was meant for pet owners.

Breathing fresher air NEW technology that improves air filtration systems in cars also claims to create air that is cleaner than that of the countryside. Ford’s advanced air filtration tested vehicles with the new system and found the amount of nitrogen oxide, a key trigger for asthma, was significantly lower or equal to that found outside vehicles in the country. The new system will feature in the all-new Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy vehicles.

All eyes to the front with latest Passat innovation DRIVERS simply need to choose which types of information they want to display By Carol Irving THE eighth Volkswagen Passat model sees a new gadget being introduced in the shape of an information display right in front of the driver’s field of vision, the first Volkswagen model to have this innovation. The display pops up above the dashboard on the windshield, enabling the driver to keep looking ahead without taking their eyes off the road. Information such as speed, traffic signs as well as data about the various assistance systems are shown on a 10 x 15cm transparent surface which has a resolution of 480 x 240 pixels. Other information like alerts or navigation data appear on the screen as though it is actually two metres in front of the vehicle, making it easier for the driver to continue focusing on the road ahead, rather than glancing at the dashboard and then having to refo-

cus, meaning there is less time to react at any potential traffic hazard. To operate the display, drivers simply need to choose which types of information they want displayed via the infotainment system and activate it via a control next to the rotary light switch. For a price of €560, this option will be available in all Passat models - the Passat Saloon,

560

Passat Variant, Passat Alltrack and Passat GTE (in Comfortline and Highline equipment trims) and is available to order now.

Breaking all records, the 1,000mph (1,610 km/h) Bloodhound car SCIENTISTS are working on developing a vehicle that can reach speeds of up to 1,000mph (1,610km/h) and so break the world land speed record. The car, which is being developed by a British team, will have an engine created from a rocket attached to a Eurofighter-Typhoon jet engine. Named Bloodhound SSC, it will make its first appearance in 2016 at Hakskeen Pan in Northern Cape, South Africa. The design has been created by World Land Speed Holder Wing Commander Andy Green, ably assisted by a team of RAF technicians from 71 Squadron. Plans are to finish off the car with a Union Jack design on the tail fin.

‘Flying Finn’ helps England to a resounding victory From Back Page

reigning SPL champions Celtic got off to a winning start by beating Ross County while Brora Rangers walloped Rothes 11-0 in the Highland League, thus equalling the club’s biggest-ever win. CRICKET – Jimmy Anderson (6-47) and then ‘Man of the Match’ Steve ‘The Flying’ Finn (679) helped England to a resounding eight wicket victory in the third Ashes Test at Edgbaston last week. Australia were dismissed for 136 and 265 while England replied with 281 and 124-2, Ian Bell scoring 53 and 65 not out. The fourth test starts today at Trent Bridge and England, 2-1 up

in the five-match series, will be without the injured Anderson. ATHLETICS - The World Anti-Doping Agency is ‘very alarmed’ after fresh allegations of suspected doping emerge in a leak of test data. It is believed that at least 10 medal-winning athletes at the 2012 London Olympics have shown dubious discrepancies in their blood. RUGBY LEAGUE – This season’s Challenge Cup Final, to be held at Wembley Stadium on the 29th of this month, will feature Hull KR against Leeds Rhinos. In the semis, Hull eliminated Warrington Wolves while the Rhinos ousted St Helens.

THERE were two significant golf tournaments over the past weekend and they reminded me of those Spot the Difference newspaper competitions. Except that with these two events the differences were identified with ease. Having watched the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Turnbury and the Tiger sponsored Quicken Loans, it is evident that there are very clear disparities between the male and female professional games. New golf super power One of the first things you notice is the increasing dominance of Asian players in the ladies’ upper strata. Out of the top 20 finishers, 10 were Asian players. This is reflected in the world rankings

where again, nine of the top 20 are Asian players. A few have relocated to other countries but the names at the top are a very strong indicator of the emergence of spectacular golfing talent from China, Japan and especially from Korea. The winner, who demonstrated the most resilient golf, was world number one, Inbee Park. A solid performer from Korea who already had a hoard of major golf titles to her name. However - whilst the vast majority of golfers would have little difficulty in identifying Jordan Spieth I would bet that Inbee could turn up at your next Texas Scramble and nobody would recognise her. I would even go further by suggesting that if she was identified as the world number one very few would be able to name her. This conjecture is supported by the size of the winner’s purse. In Gainesville, Virginia, the Quicken Loans winner, Troy Merritt, held off Rickie Fowler to top the leaderboard and collect

$1.2 million whilst in Turnbury - recently renamed Trump Turnbury - Inbee Park came from five shots back to overtake her own protégée Jin-Young Ko and collect a mere £298,000. Of course it is a large sum and a good return on four days’ effort but it does bear comparison when the standard of golf was equally high in both events and it is merely the level of exposure that is determining the value. So what is the point? In summary, I spotted: 1. Strong challenge being mounted by Asian countries in the ladies’ game. 2. Limited coverage of the ladies’ events. 3. Much lower prize value for the ladies. What do you think? Email info@clgolf.es with any comments PS. Got to squeeze in a “Well done!” to a fantastic teenage Spanish newcomer Luna Sobron, who finished tied 13th and hopes to become a professional at the end of this year.

FOOTBALL – This weekend sees the start of the new ‘English’ league season with action in all four divisions. The first ‘live’ Premiership game on BT Sport, 1.45pm kick-off, Spanish time, is on Saturday involving Manchester United and Totten-

ham Hotspur, followed by newly-promoted Bournemouth v Aston Villa, Everton v Watford, Leicester v Sunderland, Norwich v Crystal Palace and Chelsea v Swansea (teatime). It’s Arsenal v West Ham, Newcastle v Southampton and Stoke v Liverpool on Sunday and WBA v Manchester City on Monday. The top Championship games on the opening day are Brentford versus Ipswich Town (both lost in the play-offs last season) and Charlton Athletic against demoted QPR. This evening we have the

third round, second leg qualifying games in the Europa League, including AberdeenKairat (currently at 1-2), AstraWest Ham (2-2), Inter Baku-At. Bilbao (0-2) and Vitesse Arnhem-Southampton (0-3), and last night Celtic (1-0 up) were hoping to make progress in the Champions League against Qarabag in Azerbaijan. Last Saturday, Chelsea Ladies became the first winners of the Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley. A record crowd of 30,000+ saw them beat Notts County 1-0. Twenty-four hours later, 85,437 fans saw Arsenal

edge Chelsea 1-0 in the FA Community Shield game at the same venue. Alex OxladeChamberlain was on target Arsenal’s first goal against the Blues for 506 minutes. For manager Arsene Wenger, starting his 20th season in charge at The Emirates, it was his first win over Jose Mourinho and for Arsenal it was their first victory over Chelsea for four years.
