Big smiles as San Animal raises €669 SAN ANIMAL SANTUARIO ended its fayre with big smiles when the organisers learned that €669 had been raised. The stallholders were thrilled with the response, and the seven newsworthy pups also gained a lot of interest on the day. Euro Weekly News’ readers will recall that seven pups were found when their mother nested in an abandoned building. Although they had been temporarily homed, seven extra sets of paws in a home is hard work for anyone.

TREET artist known as the ‘Spanish Banksy’ has been wowing the art world with his unique and contemporary works which have been appearing on buildings and walls around the world. Pejac, who blends visual metaphors with just a hint of irony, has been gathering much attention thanks to his incredible drawings that are Banksylike in style, yet retain their own identity. The Santander-born street artist uses abandoned buildings, footpaths and building facades to highlight his view of the world. While British street artist Banksy became famous for his graffiti which often borders on the political, Pejac’s streetscapes have been described as more ‘poetic,’ and his work has

cropped up in cities including Istanbul, Paris, Moscow and London. Comparisons to Banksy are inevitable given the style of street art and the urban canvasses that Pejac uses, but his ability to blend his work into their surroundings using brushes, pencils, acrylic paint and sandpaper sets his work apart from the mainly stencil-and-spray paint arresting visuals of the mysterious guerrilla artist Banksy. It’s rumoured the Saatchi Gallery and Greenpeace have taken an interest in Pejac’s work, meaning we may hear and see more from this creative Spanish street artist, but in the meantime we can continue to enjoy his artistic footprint on the streets and walls of Spain and further afield. Vera pensioners on the streets WORKERS arriving at a nursing home in Vera were horrified when they were told the centre was closing that day. Staff at the Residencia Vera Paraiso nursing home hit the phones immediately to families of the elderly residents to see if any could take them. They were asked to come urgently because the electricity was being switched off at lunchtime. The residents carried their belongings away in bin bags, rushing to ensure they had everything before saying goodbye to their friends.

One of the centre’s evicted residents said: “We are old, and when you are old they do what they want.” The evicted residents said tearful goodbyes to each other as they went to stay with their families or were taken to hospital and temporary centres. Employees spoke of the financial struggles of the home which has suffered for four years. The Junta de Andalucia regional government has so far failed to comment, while the centre’s management has refused to make any statement to the media.

Countdown to the season begins T

HIS weekend will see the majority of towns and cities across Spain adopt a more festive look with the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights for the build-up to the holidays. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is only four short weeks away as once again it seems to be sneaking up on us out of nowhere. It only seems like yesterday when we were all still enjoying the sunshine and beaches, and now we can look forward to Christmas fairs, office Christmas parties and braving the shopping crowds in the search for gifts - not to mention the mulled wine, turkey and minced pies. Many expats head home to their own countries for the Christmas season, but there is still a huge amount of us who stay here and enjoy all that Spain has to offer for

the holidays. It might not be as cold and it might be a bit strange to see bars and restaurants open on Christmas Day, but the season here in Spain is every bit as enjoyable as it is back home. We’re getting into the Christmas spirit here at EWN, and are looking forward to the build-up to our favourite time of year.

Happy Thanksgiving Finally, we’d like to send out a Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends in Spain who will be enjoying their turkey and pumpkin pie this Thursday. In honour of the day, we’ve put together a list of interesting facts about Thanksgiving in our Time Out section that we hope you’ll enjoy.

Movie tapas for city of Almeria APPROXIMATELY 28 bars and restaurants in the capital have registered to participate in the Tapas de Pelicula, being held between November 27 and December 8. The tapas route is a parallel activity alongside the International Short Film Festival, Almeria en Corto. The city’s establishments are offering themed tapas dishes that pay homage to such movies as Clavius or the Indiana Jones series. In addition, all participating venues will have a daily happy hour from noon until 1pm for drinks. Each venue features a different movie in its dish. “The city’s hoteliers want to make clear the link between gastronomy and cinema in Almeria, because the arrival of filmmakers in the province has caused a revolution in economic and social hospitality in Almeria,” said the president of the Association of Hoteliers (Ashal), Diego Garcia, who sees the event as an opportunity to

attract visitors. Customers can vote for their favourite dishes and venues, with gold, silver and bronze awards available. To encourage people to vote, Ashal has organised a draw for a trip to Rome for two people on a bed and breakfast basis with flights included. To qualify for the draw, you must eat in, and vote for, a minimum of five establishments. Councillor for Tourism in Almeria city, Isabel Fernandez, commented: “This closes an intense year of activities and dining in the city and provincial routes.” Maria Vazquez, the province’s councillor for Culture, congratulated Ashal for everything they have done: “for the hospitality of the city in offering original and high quality food products.” For a list of the participating establishments, visit the Ashal website at www.ashal.es and scroll down to the Noticias section.

Police make farm theft arrests OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil have arrested five people who they say are members of a gang dedicated to stealing agricultural supplies in the Bajo Almanzora area. The arrests, part of an

operation called NOBOA, enabled the officers to recover more than 3,600 kilograms of fertilisers and pesticides stolen from the Cuevas del Almanzora, Vera and Pulpi areas.

The arrests came on a night when the gang had allegedly already carried out four robberies. The Guardia Civil described the gang as an organised entity, with each member

having a clearly defined role with a hierarchical structure. They believe that the people arrested were responsible for surveillance before the thefts, as well as monitoring during the robberies and the ensuing

Queen and Pope speak Children sick out against malnutrition with suspected food poisoning

QUEEN Letizia of Spain and the Pope spoke at a conference in Rome on the importance of promoting better nutrition worldwide. The Second International Nutrition Conference, organised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) was attended by 170 specialists and political leaders. Queen Letizia was accompanied by Spain’s Agricultural Minister Isabel Garcia Tejerina during her first official visit to Italy since the royal couple’s coronation. During her speech, Queen Letizia stressed that women were usually responsible for feeding their families worldwide and correctly educating them on nutritional matters could help solve malnutrition. She also said she believed multinational companies should join international agencies and governments to promote public health.

QUEEN LETIZIA: Highlighted women’s role in solving malnutrition. The Queen explained that malnutrition was the main cause of illness in the world and that while more than 850 million people in the world suffered from chronic hunger, another 1,400 million were overweight or obese. Queen Letizia declared that sufficiently funded scientific investigation was needed to fight malnutrition and spoke of Spain’s campaigns to encourage citizens to

follow WHO guidelines to limit saturated fats, sugar and salt. Pope Francisco also spoke at the conference and criticised the economic system which he believed had reduced food to just another product subject to financial speculation. “The fight against hunger and malnutrition is hindered by market priorities and the importance of gaining profits,” said the Pope.

The vehicle has not yet been registered and has never been driven on public streets in Spain. The date of the auction will be announced by the Special Treasury and Economy Delegation of Madrid. Money obtained from the sale will be added to state funds. The second vehicle is currently at the Royal Guard Museum. Like the first car, it has been part of the national heritage since June 2012. The car is registered and insured although it has not been used since it was made part of the heritage. This car is also expected to be auctioned. No technical data on the cars or estimate of starting prices have yet been given for the vehicles. Calls to hotline double, thanks to honest Brits CALLS to the benefit fraud hotline in Spain have doubled since the British Government launched a major advertising campaign during the last week of October to encourage the public to call the hotline if they suspect benefit fraud, and to urge claimants to report changes in their circumstances. The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) benefit fraud hotline in Spain - 900 55 44 40 - has seen a surge in vital tip-offs that fraud investigators are now pursuing to verify if people are claiming benefits illegally. Awareness of the campaign and associated media coverage among expatriates in Spain, and their willingness to call the hotline, is helping investigators to reduce the waste of honest taxpayers’ money on fraudsters. Work and Pensions Minister Mark Harper said: “Hard working taxpayers have had enough of fraudsters taking money which is meant for genuine claimants,

BENEFIT FRAUD: Surge in tip-offs. which is why we’re seeing so many people taking action by calling the hotline. We know it’s a small minority who commit benefit fraud but I would urge anyone who has suspicions to call the free and confidential number or report them anonymously online.” Worldwide, someone is reported to benefit fraud hotlines every minute of every working day on average, and in the last year alone nearly 60,000 fraud investigations

have been launched. The Government has recovered nearly one billion pounds of wrongly paid benefits in the last year, and has introduced a raft of measures to crack down on people who cheat the system - both abroad and in the UK including: • Tough new rules so that 40 per cent of individuals’ benefits can be taken to repay stolen cash - on top of any fine or custodial sentence handed out by the courts; • Increased penalties from £2,000 to £5,000, without taking a fraudster to court; • A new £50 civil penalty for claimants who negligently give incorrect information on their claims or fail to report a change in circumstances which results in overpayments. If you suspect a benefit cheat, call the confidential hotline on 900 55 44 40 - open from 8am to 4pm every weekday in Spain - or report them online at www.dwp.gov.uk/benefitthieves-spain.

Berja theatre to open after nine years of waiting IN mid-December, Berja’s municipal theatre is due to open, nine years after the start of the project. While inside the building the finishing touches are being applied, there is still work to be done to the access plaza outside. The theatre is built on an area of almost 4,000 square metres in the old town and has capacity to seat 526 people. It is a modern building designed after the architects made a study of Sevilla architecture. The building includes a stage, seating, dressing rooms, storage, rehearsal rooms, sound and lighting areas, a meeting room, a clinic, an exhibition hall, cafeteria and a cloakroom. There are also offices for management staff. The municipal theatre is almost ready, but they have decided to hold off the official inauguration until the access plaza is completed. This includes the landscaping of an area

2,000 metres in size, outside the main entrance to the building on Calle Lope de Vega. The project has cost almost €3 million. The money came from the town, Almeria Province and the Junta de Andalucia regional government in almost equal proportions. Work began in 2005 but was halted two years later when the builder filed for bankruptcy. Work resumed in 2008, but again cash flow plagued the builder. Finally the project was transferred to a third party, work resumed in 2014, and the project is now almost complete. It was 40 years ago that Berja’s original (privately owned) theatre ceased activity and 20 years since it was demolished. Since then, Berja’s cultural events have been confined to the hall in the Casa de Cultura and, since 2008, in the Centre de Usos Multiples.

STAT OF WEEK SEPTEMBER’s exports grew by 9.6 per cent compared with 2014. The increase followed disappointing figures for August and was prompted by the depreciation of the euro, the Economy ministry said.

Pledge from Campofrio after fire disaster CAMPOFRIO pledged to rebuild its Burgos plant, recently destroyed by fire. Owned by Mexican Sigma and the Chinese company WH, Campofrio is Europe’s largest meatprocessing company. Between factory employees and indirect jobs the Burgos fire will affect approximately 2,000 families, but no Campofrio work contracts will be rescinded, the company said. The processing plant whose 890 employees produced an annual 60,000 tons of products has been totally destroyed, together with

an adjoining ham-curing facility which employs 50 workers. A third factory is untouched, but 70 per cent of the 5,000 pigs slaughtered there each day were destined for the ruined module. Campofrio is committed to resuming production in Burgos, company sources emphasised, but they conceded that it was early to guarantee “100 per cent of the present jobs.” At the same time, processing 60,000 tons of products cannot be done with “just a couple of people,” the company added.

REAL MADRID and Barcelona’s top team members are playing under the watchful gaze of Hacienda. In Madrid Iker Casillas, Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos have had tax inspections, according to national daily El Mundo. Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano are receiving the same treatment in Barcelona.

Spain means business to Airbus SPAIN’S air traffic will double by 2013, requiring another 1,350 aircraft to meet demand. At present there are 751 aircraft operating in Spain and the increase will call for a $250 billion (€200 billion) investment by both domestic and foreign carriers, predicted aircraft manufacturer Airbus. By 2033, an estimated 50,000

passengers will leave from Madrid and Barcelona each day on intercontinental flights and above all to Latin America, Airbus said. Budget airlines are also great contributors to traffic growth in Spain, the report maintained and short-haul traffic between Spain and the UK has - and will continue to have - the highest market share of low cost carriers.

Since 1996 it was customary for top earners to receive 85 per cent of their salary directly from the club, paying income tax (IRPF) at approximately 52 per cent. The remainder came through an image-rights company on which they paid corporation tax at 30 per cent, bringing savings of hundreds of thousands of euros for players

earning millions. Citing new regulations dating from 2006, Hacienda now claims that as the 15 per cent for the player’s image rights is paid at the market price, this should be liable to 52 per cent IRPF. Hacienda is also homing in on the 10 per cent agents receive from a player’s transfer fee or contract renewal.

Xenophobia undermines unity A RISING tide of xenophobia is undermining Western European unity. Austerity, the threat of a return to recession, service cutbacks, unemployment and inflation combine to fuel a virulent nationalism tearing at the fabric of society. The first manifestations of disquiet are anti-austerity protests sweeping EU capitals and major cities. I said it first: This week international policymakers debated if the US dollar and Euro can compete with rival economies. The effect is aggravated by former trading partners like Russia opting for alternatives and self-sufficiency. Finland is now preparing its economy to withstand the collapse of the Euro. One of eight Baltic states, Finland is not alone in

facing up to the possibility of such a challenge. Europeans should never be economic migrants. However, as the Euro-zone slips back into recession young people face a bleak future. The young ponder greener grass opportunities in faraway countries.

Typically, Estonia has lost 20 per cent of its population. Not all will stay in Europe. In doing so newcomers face growing hostility as they enter job markets that can no longer offer employment to their own nationals. This is where the blue touch paper of xenophobic up-the-drawbridge sentiment creeps in. Growing resentment against immigration in Britain and Germany is well recognised. Fuelled by NATO’s anti-Russian rhetoric there is simmering, anti-Russian sentiment in the Baltic States. These three nations host large Russian ethnic communities as England hosts many of Irish background. Desperate to separate the EU from Russia in order that it becomes more reliant on American trade,

the US provokes anti-Russian feeling. EU anti-Russian sanctions are causing a backlash in Germany, Poland, Spain and France. The French economy, already slipping into recession, will face a bill of nearly €3 billion and the loss of thousands of shipbuilding jobs if, caving in to American pressure, France fails to honour its shipbuilding obligations to Russia. In what is now Ukraine, the birthland of Russia, the Russian language is the most used. As I write, frontier posts and barbed wire walls are being erected. Imagine that happening on Northern Ireland or Scottish borders. If xenophobia rears its ugly head, all Europeans will suffer. Those who live in greenhouses shouldn’t throw stones.

Money worries causing bags under the eyes for women through sleepless nights Loose change A look at finance for females

Jane Plunkett jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com

AS if crying babies, noisy student neighbours or an uncomfortable mattress weren’t enough to keep us up at night, a new study has revealed that women suffer terribly from sleepless nights, because of money worries too. Women are apparently much more bothered about cash flow than men are, and thinking about such financial problems, causes them to toss and turn all night. Fretting about how to pay household bills and how to begin some proper saving

MONEY WORRIES: Women are much more bothered about cash flow than men are, and thinking about it causes them to toss and turn. were the number one concerns of most people surveyed. On top of these, women were particularly worried about paying for the future and repaying back debt. All this worry is not doing women any favours either. The sleepless nights impact on their ability to concentrate, get work done and it negatively affects their relationships. So why are women more stressed about money than men? Some might say that women are exposed to more stressful situations than men, as they

not only have their own working lives, but also tend to take on more responsibilities in the home. Also it’s true that women in general earn less than men, so if they’re employed part-

time for example, they’re less likely to have health benefits and financial resources. Another theory is that women are more comfortable with reporting higher levels of stress.

If you notice that you might be one of these women lacking sleep and stressing over money it’s time to take some action. Remember it’s not selfish to look after yourself, it’s normal; it’s healthy. And it will make you more effective at dealing with responsibilities at work and home. Go for a walk. Stop and sit in the sun for a while. Take a relaxing bath. Force yourself to take care of yourself. Also don’t sweep financial concerns under the carpet to be dealt with in the future. Maybe you feel bad or embarrassed about your debt, and that can lead to inaction. But it’s essential to face and deal with the situation head on. If it’s too hard to do this alone, reach out for help.

We Law in Spain have tried to vote the President out and this By David Searl year we thought we had done it. However, when we received the AGM Minutes, we found we had lost by 20 votes. This is more votes than owners. This is because the parent company of our Administrators owns most of the parking bays. They have now formed 30 parking bays into 30 companies. They sent their staff to the AGM with proxy votes in favour of the President. L.S. (Costa Blanca) A. Your letter gives rise to some new questions. I urge you to consult a Spanish lawyer to answer the following: 1. Are your AGM votes counted by the percentage share (‘quota’) of each property, according to its size, or is each property allotted one vote? Correctly, the voting should be according to the size of the properties, which means the parking bays would count for little. 2. Are these parking bays registered as companies? It costs a minimum of €200 to register an SL company, which means an investment of €6,000 for 30 of them. Finally, where one or two owners hold

OPINION & COMMENT

Still going strong EVERY morning I go to the gym to work out and have my radio with me. One station plays oldies 24 hours a day, year-round, with no commercials and I happened to hear Leapy Lee’s tune this morning, the Little Arrows tune! Now I know a bit about 50’s and 60’s rock, but had never heard the tune before and in fact I had to look at the display to see who was doing that particular song. I wrote down the name and then checked on the internet and it was Leapy Lee. I don’t remember hearing it before but that happens sometimes with obscure one-hit wonders! It’s kind of neat that he did this tune nearly 50 years ago and it still gets air time, so I just wanted him to know it’s still being played somewhere on the planet at some time during the day. Thanks for a good tune, Leapy, and good health in the future! Wayne Wachtell, Cleveland Ohio (USA)

Upbeat outlook I RETIRED to Spain from Scotland approximately two years ago and am now 67 years of age. Shortly after I arrived in Spain I was diagnosed as having prostate cancer. As you can imagine I was devastated, but after radiotherapy treatment at Hospital Clinico, Malaga I have the all-clear and it feels great. Therefore Leapy Lee should not feel down as he will probably be OK, but if the news is bad, remember it can be treated successfully. Jim Malley, Duquesa (Malaga)

Act now HOW right Jeremy Cordon is! Not only expats, but the whole of Britain would lose out if we were to leave the EU. By all means let’s write to all our contacts in the UK with this message. I wrote to mine to tell

them not to vote for Scottish independence, and that seems to have worked! Our UK government’s policy towards the EU is being led, not by a real assessment of the pros and cons, but by their terror of losing seats to UKIP. And of course it follows that we should tell our UK contacts not to vote for UKIP, a party with no policies except to get out of the EU. They try to make us believe that would solve our problems, while it would solve none. Although the main parties seem paralysed with fear of UKIP, they could get their credibility back if they would only come out and fight Farage instead of appeasing him. Bill Campbell (by email)

Coming clean REFERRING to the Euro Weekly News article on Spain’s tax laws, I thought that all citizens in most European countries signed for their ‘world assets’ wherever they are registered. In Holland, as well as in Spain, it is common practice. I think

Vanishing act I WOULD like to know if anyone has had the same experience that I had. On November 12 at a supermarket in La Cañada a 35cm x 35cm calendar went on the conveyer belt and through the till. It appeared on my bill but never came out at my end. I went straight to my car and seeing it wasn’t there returned to the store within 10 minutes to report its absence. It was too

large to slip out of my trolley and too large and colourful to be left on the conveyer belt. Any ideas, anyone? DW Grace, Marbella (Malaga)

Changing times I’VE been in Spain for the last 15 years on and off and have seen many changes and not for the better! 1. There is a high speed train track to nowhere with millions of euros wasted, plus a bronze statue of King Felipe and the queen outside the town hall in Fuengirola which is now a hotel. 2. People are living with their retired mum and dad with six or eight people in a twobedroom flat without employment or money, living on dad’s pension. That’s wrong! 3. There are people living in doorways like the woman at the BBVA bank in Los Boliches who has been there for two years. She goes to Santa Fe hostel when she gets a few euros and is always clean and sleeps sitting upright on a suitcase. I told Age Concern but nothing

happened. 4. They are driving retired expats back to the UK with stupid tax laws and will miss all the UK pensions we spend here when we’ve gone. 5. There are too many beggars, genuine or not, and no wonder all of Europe go to the UK for benefits. Some things in the rest of Europe are good as you can’t get benefits until you pay in for two years. That would stop them all going to the UK and taking my family’s money! 6. People come on holiday for sun, sand, food and entertainment, starting at 9pm and stopping at 12 midnight. Madrid people buy cheap apartments over existing bars then get them closed down for noise! They should not be able to do this and they should only complain if a bar opens up after buying a flat. 7. The town hall wants to sit in ivory towers and look down at locals fishing for sardines and riding donkeys. That is Spain’s two tier system: the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots.’ Brian Warman, Fuengirola (Malaga)

It’s too early I AM old enough to remember the old ‘Post early for Christmas’ slogan, although I believe the good old GPO (remember the GPO?) was thinking of a just a week or so ahead of the big day, not months. I very much doubt that they imagined people would one day be buying Christmas cards and presents the moment Halloween was over. Much of it is the fault of shops and chain stores where they put up their decorations and sometimes their prices in mid-November. They then brainwash and strong-arm the public into believing it is their duty as consumers to respond. Spain used to be different in this respect, staving off the trappings and feeding frenzy until well into December but no, even that’s been taken away from us now. I enjoy Christmas as much as the next person but please, please, please: not in November. S McNamara (by email)

OPINION & COMMENT

Finally arrived back home LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

T

HAT was most definitely the trip that was. Everything that could go wrong - did. Right up to missing my final connecting flight from Barcelona to Mallorca. Not my fault. With an already tight schedule, my flight from Denmark was delayed for 40 minutes, this led to the ol’ boy panting and dripping between terminals one and two at Barcelona, where I finally arrived at the gate at exactly take off time. There’s nothing more frustrating than standing at the gate watching the doors close to the plane you should be on. Anyway I did manage to catch one an hour later (at an extra charge of €120, I may

add). Frankly I can never fathom the often unbelievable variance in airline prices. Sometimes you can travel great distances for €30-odd and at other times it can cost a fortune for a 45-minute hop. Ah well, what do us minions know? On the brighter side I’ve managed to pick up a number of UK bookings for next year. One of the reasons is that most of the 60s’ lot are actually dead! Never thought I could be a commercial draw simply for being alive - funny ol’ life, innit? Denmark I found a little depressing, what with the cold and most of the populace shrouded in black winter attire. The people are most friendly, however, and I’d like to thank them for making the ol’ boy feel thoroughly welcome and comfortable. By the way, all you Denmarkians, that orange thing which appeared briefly in

DENMARK: Depressingly most people wore black winter attire. the sky on Friday was actually the sun. Don’t panic! One of the most interesting occurrences for me happened on the very doorstep where I was staying. My girlfriend had told me that her upstairs neighbours were Muslims and I

had glimpsed a couple of shrouded-up ladies passing by the kitchen window. Lo and behold the day before I left there was a knock at the door. It turned out to be the same two ladies standing on the doorstep holding a... poinsettia.

To my astonishment, and pleasure, I may add, they then welcomed me to Denmark and, handing me the plant, wished me a happy Christmas! My lady friend told me that both the mother and father were employed and their two daughters attended the local school. Now that’s what I call integration. Contrary to what a number of people think, I am not a racist and if all immigrants acted and integrated in the same way as this lovely family, I would have no problems at all. Unfortunately, as most of us know, this family is the exception rather than the rule. Nevertheless it was a pleasure to see how peaceful, reasonably-thinking people can actually live together in peace and harmony. Good to be back! Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

will also join the original cast for the new series. Coronation Street bosses have announced plans for another live episode. The long-running soap will go live again in September 2015 to help mark ITV’s 60 years on air. Show chiefs have promised that a number of plots will reach a dramatic climax to

coincide with the special occasion. This will be the first time that Coronation Street has gone live since the show’s 50th anniversary week in 2010, which focused on a tram crash disaster on the cobbles. It will also be the first live episode to be produced from Corrie’s new home in Trafford. Speaking of the challenge ahead, Blackburn commented: “It’s an honour to be at the helm as Coronation Street goes live once more. “We’ve a reputation to uphold after the success of the tram crash and I’m going to enjoy working with the storyliners and writers as we plot stories for our live episode in 2015. We’ll be doing all we can to eclipse what’s gone before.” Rival soap EastEnders is also going live next year, with a special ‘live week’ planned to mark the show’s 30th anniversary. Life-saving brake fluid test forms a vital part of your safety routine

MOST major manufacturers recommend changing brake fluid every 24 months. When did you last have yours changed? Making sure your brake fluid works correctly is a vital part of your safety, which is important to us at SRS Vehicle Services. Research has shown that 26.5 per cent of motorists have defective brake fluid, with nearly one in 10 risking their lives every time they drive. The study also revealed a worrying lack of knowledge among motorists about how brake fluid functions. Brake fluid becomes defective for a variety of reasons which can be explained to you by one of our fully qualified, expert mechanics. Once boiling point is below 180 degrees Celsius the fluid becomes all but useless, potentially causing sudden and inexplicable brake failure.

SRS VEHICLE SERVICES: Using the latest brake fluid diagnostic tool. Changing the fluid is recommended when its boiling point reduces to 200 degrees Celsius. Using our ultramodern, specialist diagnostic tool we are

able to check and provide you with a printout of your brake fluid’s boiling point, allowing you to take action if required, or discuss the findings with our team.

Mike Bewsey, the spokesperson for Cosan lubricants, marketer of Mobil Car Care in Europe, said: “The poor quality of the fluid that controls such a safety-critical vehicle component

is alarming, as is the general lack of understanding about how it works. “Unfortunately, once your brake fluid is contaminated, there is no going back and there is a much greater risk that your fluid will boil. After an accident and once the fluid has cooled again, it will appear to be normal.” Research suggests that the ‘phantom’ nature of brake fluid failure could account for thousands of accidents every year. Whilst it is possible to visually check the fluid level, the quality testing is equally important. This test is currently being provided free of charge when your car is in for a full service, or for €20 redeemable against the fluid change.

The ‘transcendental prisoner’ lives adventurously in the spirit of Almeria Ric Polansky

I

Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

KNOW when I left America for Spain back in ’69, I was a strict Transcendentalist. No, it’s not contagious, but rather a school of thought, propagated by Henry David Thoreau and RW Emerson, expounding the American virtues of being selfreliant and ‘living deliberately.’ Naturally, all this infers a preordained set of social rules and accountability within such a society. In America it was an easy manifesto to lean upon, then. Within just two weeks of arriving in Spain, it all changed. Whoa! Are not dogma of the most truthful kind meant to survive eternally? Well, there wasn’t one iota of truth in those

our inner man: nature or nurture? In Spain, no matter how well I planned my day and scripted my efforts, changes were just as rampant and common. One could decide to go to Almeria, drive down the road a few miles, and find the road gone - disappeared under a nasty flow of whirling, muddy water. The sky was sunny, we had no rain the night before, but obviously something far up in the LOOKIN G mountains had happBACK IN ened, and here it was affecting our MOJAC AR day with powerful consequence. ROAD BLOCK: Days won’t follow a script. Back home there was oh so pleasant conjugations my philosophy. Whoops! It all no electricity. Obviously it had mind had created back in the vanished in Spain. It evaporated rained somewhere and knocked states. circumstantial changes controlled all events. No, ruled my life. “What do you mean, no petrol at the station?” Well, it meant you turned your engine off and waited or risked not having enough fuel to return. Now, I’ve survived here more than 45 years trying to figure it all out. Then, suddenly it hit me. It was a full window display at the pharmacist in an advertisement for sunglasses. There, splashed before my eyes, the proverbial ‘writing on the wall,’ scrolled, overly simplified. It was a lightning bolt of truth. “The adventure starts when something fails.” Living in Spain is just that type of an adventure. I have presumed all my life that I am one of those adventurous people, genetically fashioned to confront circumstances. Trapped in a circumstantial daily spin around. Obviously I can live in no other place!

No Hiding Place As 50 Countries Sign Deal To Share Your Information Automatic exchange of information on a global scale will become a reality in 2017, as 51 countries signed an agreement to share financial information. Another 35 jurisdictions will join the following year. All Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and G20 countries, as well as most major international financial centres, have signed a “multilateral competent authority agreement” that will activate the automatic sharing of financial data for tax purposes. It shows the determination from governments across the globe to prevent tax evasion and capture lost tax revenue. Tax authorities of participating countries will be able to gather much more information on the assets their taxpayers hold abroad. The OECD explains that automatic exchange of information “can provide timely information on non-compliance where tax has been evaded either on an investment return or the underlying capital sum, even where the tax administrations have had no previous indications of non-

By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks compliance”. Fifty-eight jurisdictions, known as the “early adopters”, have pledged to make the first exchange in 2017. This includes Spain, the UK, most EU countries, Isle of Man, Jersey, Guernsey, and Gibraltar. A further 35 jurisdictions have said they will start in 2018, including Switzerland, Singapore, Monaco and Hong Kong. Only a few years ago, in 2008, the then Swiss finance minister Hans Rudolf Merz vowed that banking

secrecy would prevail, saying that its foreign opponents would have to “bite the bullet” and accept it. The US does not appear on any of the lists, since under its own Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) it will start automatically exchanging information with countries around the world from 2015. After the signing ceremony, OECD Secretary-General, Angel Gurria, commented: “We are making concrete progress towards the G20 objective of winning the fight against tax evasion… The world is quickly becoming a smaller place for tax cheats.” The global “Standard for Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information in Tax Matters” is different from most current bilateral agreements, where authorities have to make formal requests for information. Now they will automatically receive information on all their taxpayers

who hold assets in the participating territories. The standard sets out the financial account information to be exchanged, including balances, interest, dividends and sales proceeds from financial assets. It covers accounts held by individuals and entities, including trusts and foundations. The OECD will establish a peer review process to ensure that the automatic exchange of data is effectively implemented. It is encouraging developing countries to join the movement. The move towards the end of financial privacy has already had a significant impact on state coffers, as more and more people realise there is nowhere left to hide. According to the OECD, 20 countries have raised $47 billion (€37bn) through voluntary disclosure schemes since 2009. Cross border tax planning has completely changed over the last 15

years; particularly since the move towards global tax transparency escalated in the wake of the financial crisis. Where once we used to take financial privacy for granted, we now have to accept that it is history. Tax authorities will have information on our income and assets, wherever we hold them. One thing has not changed however, which is that every individual has the right to structure their assets in a tax efficient manner. You need to establish how you can use approved tax advantageous structures here in Spain to reduce your tax liabilities. It is important to be compliant with local tax law, but it is also important to protect your wealth from taxation wherever possible. You can do both if you take specialist advice. If your pet was given a passport before December 29, 2014, you do not need to get a new one. Your old one is valid. If your pet is given a pet passport after December 29, 2014, it will receive a new pet passport free of charge. Which animals need a pet passport? The new EU-system is for cats, dogs and ferrets. For other pets, national legislation applies. What are the main requirements to travel with my pet within the EU? Do I (the owner) need to accompany my pet when travelling? Yes, in principle all pets must be accompanied by their owner. Recognising this might be difficult in certain situations, so long as when the movement of the pet and the owner is within five days of each other, the pet can also be

December 2014, your pet must be at least 12 weeks old before you can get it vaccinated against rabies for the purpose of travel. What happens if I travel with my animal and do not meet the requirements? Make sure your pet is fully compliant before travelling. It is prohibited to travel abroad with your pet without following the pet travel rules. Non-compliant pets may be put into quarantine, rejected or put down at a last resort at the expense of the owner. Stringent penalties are in place for those that break the rules. In the waiting room I made a m note: be one of the cheerful peo Erica Russell Watson: My journey – and I’m driving

27th October BACK at home after my mastectomy and I was feeling surprisingly well. I think that my overall physical and mental state had a lot to do with being organised and well prepared for the hospital visit. You need to free your mind of all worries if possible and allow yourself to relax and you will find you go through surgery and recover very well. Just knowing that my dear friend Emma was at home looking after my children was a huge comfort to me. She had flown over from England and cooked and cleaned and nurtured!

She came to visit me every day in the hospital and even tried to rescue a stray puppy outside the hospital one day! Special thanks to her for all her love and the great chemo cookery book! It was time to get serious on the food front and start cooking meals to boost my immune system in preparation for chemo-therapy. The next few weeks were spent pottering about looking after myself and my stitches. People were most impressed by my mastectomy bra and ‘chicken fillet.’ “You look normal Erica.” Normal is exactly how I felt! In reality I wasn’t upset about losing my breast and at times entirely forget that I only had one! It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to changes. Reconstruction would be a thing for the future, I had to get better first and then I could think about bikinis! The district nurse visited me at my home to check how my

stitches were doing and was pleased. It was nice of him to come to my house as I still couldn’t drive and this way I avoided the germs of the doctors waiting room! They looked dry and the wound had closed very well so he removed the stitches. Each little procedure that liberates your body from the vestiges of an operation feels like a mini triumph. Life ticked on as normal despite still not being able to drive. I would soon be behind the wheel again though. You need to give yourself 15-20 days after the operation before driving but each person is different. I started with short journeys and made sure I put my seat belt and the hand brake on with my ‘good’ arm. Just before I could get back behind the wheel Marta, yes yet another friend from England, arrived. It was great to see her and catch up and we did the

shopping and various tasks that are more difficult single handed. She had gone to a lot of effort to think of the things that would help me. For example, probiotics to boost my immune system and naturally an enormous amount of chocolate! The phone rang and my appointment with the oncologist was confirmed first with the radiologist on November 13 and then the oncologist for November 19 in Malaga. I went to the Carlos Haya Hospital to talk to the radiologist and they explained that I would be receiving chemo first, with the idea of eradicating any traces of cancer in my system and then radio-therapy a month after the end of the chemo. The radiotherapy is concentrated in the area you have had your tumours removed from to try to ensure they don’t regrow. I was informed radiotherapy would not hurt but my skin would be very sensitive and that

I would have to use special creams. The sessions would be intensive and daily and could be up to 20 sessions with weekends off for a rest. This would be confirmed later down the line after a full body x-ray and to see what shape I was in after the chemo in terms of weight loss and the like. Now just to wait for my appointment with the oncologist to find out how many sessions of chemo I would have and to ask about all the side effects and to cover any doubts I had. I was very keen to get started. Roll on November 19 was all I could think. November 19 and I went to the ‘Materno’ Hospital in Malaga for my appointment with the oncologist. It was a long wait. As I looked around the waiting room it started to hit home what the side effects of chemo would be. Apart from the obvious signs like hair loss, I caught snippets of conversations about many

mental ople other side effects such as nausea. Some people seemed cheerful and others were very low indeed. Mental note to self; try and be one of the cheerful people Erica! Then finally I was called in. The oncologist went over my operation results, examined me and asked me how I felt. To be honest I felt fine apart from having headaches. He decided to send me for scans for my head, torso and bones as a precautionary measure. This was a positive move because if the cancer had spread to another part of my body I would rather know about it! My chemotherapy would start very soon and I was told to come back to the hospital on November 26 for blood tests and depending on the results I would then be given a start date for treatment. Not long to go now. The sooner I started, the sooner I would finish.

Keeping your garden fertilized Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

SOME 30 years ago expatriates investing in a villa or old agricultural property in Spain often found they inherited fertile soil, well-fertilized naturally, perhaps over centuries, by mules, donkeys, horses, goats, sheep and free range poultry. However, this type of land was soon sold up and by the boom of the 1980s to 2000s many villas and rows of townhouses were being built on overworked, impoverished land, which would make it difficult to develop a garden without improving the soil before planting anything. So what can be done? Let me share some of the things we did.

ROOTS MANURE: Natural soil improvers enhance soil’s texture and moisture-holding properties. 1. One of the men who built the walls around our plot was a part-time shepherd with 100 sheep and goats. We asked if we could have a few sacks of well-rotted manure. Amazingly, he had a heap which he wanted clearing. When we dug the first

space full it had obviously been there for a good number of years and was nice and crumbly, with no smell. Over a few days we moved six boot loads in sacks and it was worked into our first shrub beds. 2. When we started our vegetable plot we

discovered another heap which another shepherd was about to sell to a major vegetable grower. We asked if we could have a few sacks first. He said yes and said he would charge the equivalent of €1 a sack. We immediately shook hands on that and were

even more pleased when we discovered it was full of thousands of fat red worms. 3. Within 10 years, just half a flock of the original 11 flocks of sheep and goats in our valley remained, and it was not possible to obtain any manure.

However we found that a local agricultural cooperative sold inexpensive sacks of dried goat and sheep manure. Originally this was €3 a sack. Ten years later the price is €5 a sack and still good value. 4. Now we have a regular supply of rabbit manure from our own rabbits, grown for cooking organic paellas, plus manure from the chickens we keep for the same purpose. The chicken droppings are added to the compost heap or composted in a separate pile for a year as they are too strong to use without first composting. 5. We have also experimented with growing green manures and working these into the soil, as well as using spent mushroom composts. Ash from our log fires is sprinkled around onions, leeks and garlic. In fact there is a table comparing 16 things that we have used from time to time on page 75 of our book, Growing Healthy Vegetables in Spain. There is certainly a benefit in using natural soil improvers rather than inorganic chemicals which do nothing to improve the texture of soil, nor its ability to hold moisture. Neither will chemicals support building up the level of beneficial microorganisms, which help break down added manures and enable roots to extract nutrients from the soil.

Albox water safe to drink ALBOX water is now safe and clear to drink again, with no traces of radioactivity according to the latest of three positive safety tests. Mayor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, was enthusiastic about the results and said: “Finally water consumed by Albojenses is of good quality. The images in black and white of our countrymen protesting about water quality and quantity in decades past are history. Together, the residents of Albox have turned a black page in our history and can move towards a new future.” The mayor’s statements were made after receiving the final documents from those responsible for the testing. Work now begins on cleaning and installing new water supplies in Llano del Espino and Las Pocicas that are planned to be functioning by the end of 2015.

Rents drop but yields rise THE Spanish Consumer Price Index (CPI) shows that the average price for long term rentals in Spain fell by 0.7 per cent in October compared to the same month in 2013. Rental prices have been falling for 19 months in a row and the drop is sharper than the general CPI which is down 0.1 per cent. Overall rental prices went down by 0.1 per cent on a monthly basis, with the monthly rate for long term rentals falling in 15 autonomous regions. The biggest price

drops were in Navarra, down 2.3 per cent, Murcia down 2.1 per cent, La Rioja down 1.7 per cent, Madrid down 1.4 per cent, the Valencian Community down 1.2 per cent and Castilla La Mancha down 0.9 per cent. Andalucia and Extremadura both saw a 0.8 per cent fall. Despite that, gross rental yields are on an upward trend. Rents may have been falling, but property prices up until last year fell faster.

Members were able to blame the weather for the poor scoring on the front nine holes, so everyone had to work harder on the back nine when the sun came out to post a half decent score. Winner of the 1st division was Mike Oulton with 32 points, second was Sid Jones (29), third on count back was Dave Ward (27). The second division was won by Tom Tannant (30).
