Shooting of Dutch bar owner rocks small village THE owner of a bar in Colmenar, Malaga, has been found lying in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to the head.

The man was found alive at 3.30am on Saturday morning (September 27), by a client who had stopped at the bar to buy

ICONIC STRUCTURE: Nerja’s Balcon de Europa.

Landslide closes walkway NERJA Council has temporarily closed part of the pedestrian walkway along the coast after a landslip beneath the Balcon de Europa. In a statement, Nerja’s representative for infrastructure, Antonio García, said that a ‘small displacement of earth’ was seen to take place underneath the Balcon’s platform, resulting in the walkway below being closed.

The emergency services were informed of the situation. García went on to say that although renovation work in the area had to start immediately, there was no cause for concern. The Balcon de Europa is one of the area’s most iconic structures, featuring heavily in hit Spanish TV show from the 1980s, Verano Azul.

Dutch national known as ‘Tarek’, had owned the bar for the last three years, selling pizzas and hamburgers to locals. The bar was known for being open for long, extended hours. Finding Tarek alive but unresponsive, the young man who discovered the bloody crime scene ran to get help, at that point believing that Tarek may have suffered a fall, or that someone may have hit him on the head. An ambulance was called and paramedics managed to stabilise Tarek despite his critical condition and him having suffered several heart attacks. But Tarek’s injuries were so severe that despite the best efforts of the

paramedic team, he died en route to Malaga’s Carlos Haya Hospital. A post-mortem examination revealed a bullet lodged in the victim’s forehead, and indicated that it had entered his head from the back. Colmenar is a small village, a community where everyone knows everyone. Tarek was described as being a well-liked individual. Motives for the murder remain unclear. The police investigation is working on several theories including robbery and the accounts being mismanaged. Prior to setting up home and a business in Colmenar, Tarek had managed a bar in La Carihuela area of Torremolinos.

CLEAN-UP: Municipial crews deployed after the heavy weekend rains.

Downpours lead to a major clean-up

FOLLOWING the torrential downpours registered during the weekend with close to 70 litres of rainwater per square metre, Almuñecar and La Herradura municipal crews started cleaning up the towns’ streets, beaches, cliffs and ravines. Central La Herradura was one of the most affected areas. “We did not have major rainwater run-off problems thanks to the spring and summer clean-ups of the riverbeds,” remarked Environment Councillor Luis Aragon.

According to the Vivero de la Mezquita Observatory in La Herradura, the average amount of rainfall registered between Friday (September 26) and Monday morning (September 29) was 65.5 litres per square metre. However, rainfall levels were actually higher in other areas of the municipalities. Municipal cleaning crews had to be deployed in Rambla de Caballero and Rambla del Espinar in La Herradura and El Barranco La Mezquita and Los Marinos to clear debris from the streets.

Nerja Facebook priest sparks controversy VOTING for the People’s Party (PP) is as serious a sin as having an abortion, wrote a Nerja priest on his Facebook wall. Andres Francisco Perez Gonzalez is the local priest at Iglesia de El Salvador in Nerja and arrived in the town from a Benamargosa parish a decade ago. A fan of the internet and social media, he uses a tablet to celebrate mass and control the sound system and the dozen television screens installed in the church a couple of years ago. His post sparked controversy among some of his Facebook friends and was later deleted after Gonzalez got a phone call from Spanish newspaper Diario Sur journalists who wanted to dig deeper into the meaning of his words. “I have nothing to say. There is more important news to report,” said Gonzalez, according to the newspaper. His contentious 20-line publication targeted Spanish President Rajoy. The priest said: “This is what that

party or the opposition who have stolen from public finances or against the unions that have lied and stolen.” On March 11, on the 10th anniversary of the Madrid train bombings, Gonzalez called upon authorities on his Facebook page to reopen the investigation to find the whereabouts of the masterminds behind the bloodbath. However, he also deleted that post after getting a call from Diario Sur.

The right thing to do is fight IS

T

HE UK Parliament has done the right thing in the fight against IS Islamic fighters. Sending in the RAF to help in the fight against extremism is the least the government can do. The IS, in both Syria and Iraq, has shown itself to be utterly ruthless with a total disregard for the lives of people who get in their way. And we need to be clear about this, it is not just people of other religions they are killing and driving from their homes, it is fellow Muslims too. Their religious war is not about spreading the word of Islam, as they may want to make some people think, it is about enforcing their own particularly bloodthirsty interpretation. Not for them persuasion; they take the route of oppression. It speaks volumes that Iran, not noted for its tolerance, is one of the

main opponents of IS in the region. Iran has supplied guns and ammunition to forces opposed to IS, and also sent in rocket launchers. So an unofficial and unlikely alliance is now forming against the IS threat. A NATO-based coalition in the air, and Iran on the ground. Unfortunately, there seem to be too many disaffected youth radicalised in Western countries, from Spain to France and the UK, willing to join in the bloodshed, the most infamous of whom is Jihadi John, who has so cruelly beheaded three hostages on video. So yes, send in the air force, but also think about those who have joined in the fight for IS. It should be made absolutely clear there is no room back home, whether in the UK, Spain or any other country, for anyone who has joined the organisation.

Fruit thieves target more farms THE number of fruit theft cases in Torrox and Frigiliana farms has experienced an increase in recent weeks. While it is true that the number of reported fruit theft cases in Velez Malaga has considerably decreased thanks to the increased police surveillance in the area, fruit thieves have now moved to the eastern part of the Axarquia and are targeting Torrox and Frigiliana farms, said farming association Asaja representatives. The thieves rarely get away with more than 500 kilograms, but there have been cases where more than two tons of subtropical fruits have been stolen. “We are witnessing a hike in fruit theft in Torrox and Frigiliana. The farmers tell us that they see flashlights moving about during the night and then discover that the thieves have stolen large amounts of fruit. The good news is they are now aware of how important it is to denounce the thefts. “We know lodging a complaint can be a rather unpleasant thing to do, but if farmers do not denounce the thieves, there is not much the government can do,” said Benjamin Fauli from Asaja.

Mica Paris says yes to

NO Means NO….

THE No Means No campaign launched by the Euro Weekly News (EWN) has been given the thumbs-up by singer Mica Paris. As a crusader herself who does huge amounts of work for charity, she happily agreed to support the EWN campaign ‘No Means No,’ a movement against the abuse of women and the promotion of equality for women in a message that means: ‘When I say no, it really means no.’ She took the time to speak to EWN’s Anna Tildesley about her life and work…

V

IVACIOUS, bubbly and caring were the three words which immediately came to mind, when interviewing Mica Paris last night before her appearance at Old Joys Pub in Puerto Banus. Regardless of the sweltering heat and usual pre-show chaos, when there was a chance to sit with her for 10 minutes, it was like we were in a room on our own having a girlie chat. A legend in her own right,

“I really think women need all the help and encouragement they can get. We are under attack.” Mica Paris is not ‘just a singer’ as she puts it; in fact, she said: “If I was just a singer, it would drive me mad.” She is also a presenter, roving reporter and a regular fill-in host on ITV’s This Morning. And if that wasn’t enough to be getting on with, her spare time is dedicated to two charities. The legendary soul singer is the ambassador for the Amy Winehouse Trust, and the patron of the charity KIN (Kibera in Need). Mica travels to Kenya once a year to support the families in the Kibera slum and by the look on her face as she describes walking through the poverty-stricken area, it’s a very challenging and heartwrenching experience. “You gag as you walk through. I was ill for four days the last time I came back, but we have to help them,” she explained, adding: “I’m lucky, and I want people to realise

how spoilt we all are, it’s a reality check on life. “We worry about what our hair looks like or what necklace to wear, but when you go to these places, you realise that our worries are nothing compared to what these children live with.” Mica’s children also help out with the charity work and although it is too dangerous for them to go to the Kibera slums, she tells me that they do a lot of charity work around her home town of London. Fascinated by how this beautiful, 5ft 11” tall woman can look so amazing at 45 and knowing articles written about her yo-yo dieting and helterskelter weight fluctuations, when I asked her to divulge her secret of a balanced healthy lifestyle, surprisingly she didn’t talk about personal trainers, chia seeds or yoga classes. Instead she said: “It’s simple: one litre of water a day, vegetables, protein and a gym session three times a week,” and by the look on her face, when Alex looked over, a gorgeous boyfriend seems to help! Mica is embarking on two new albums to be released later this year. She is collaborating on the new Freemasons album and working with Rod Temperton, the songwriter famous for writing the historic No 1 hit for Michael Jackson, ‘Thriller.’

NEWS Velez Malaga to tear down all shanties by 2015

FARM RAIDED: Weapons and 8,900 marihuana plants seized.

Police raid yields drugs and guns

NATIONAL POLICE have confiscated a large amount of drugs and weapons in a raid on a farm in Velez-Malaga. Officers seized 8,900 marihuana plants, an automatic rifle, two handguns and ammunition from a greenhouse on the farm in Velez-Malaga. The anti-drug operation resulted in the arrest of two suspects, a 42-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, according to a police statement. On Tuesday September 23, officers discovered two greenhouses fullyequipped for the cultivation, irrigation

and ventilation of the plants. Suspicions were raised due to the strong, distinctive smell emitting from the greenhouses as well as the volume of noise produced by the ventilation system. Police also discovered equipment for drying, cutting and grinding marihuana, together with 33 kilos of the drug ready for sale. A quantity of cash was also recovered. The two suspects have been remanded in custody on charges of crimes against public health, and the possession of illegal firearms.

VELEZ MALAGA Council is to draw up plans to tear down all temporary shelters by 2015. Demolishing the shanties located in Casillas de la Via on the Torre del Mar exit to Malaga (old CN340) is the one of the top priorities of the local authority. Around 30 families live in the crudely built homes and are at the mercy of the elements, especially torrential rain, which all too often results in power failures. Most shanties have two rooms, one which serves as a living room and the other as a bedroom more often than not shared by eight people. The inhabitants are distrustful of politicians’ promises, as they say they have heard the same thing for 30 years. Finding a solution to their problem and building new homes for them requires the co-operation of the Junta de Andalucia, said Mayor Francisco Delgado Bonilla. The council is soon to begin looking for the best location to build them and it is willing to cede a plot of land, he commented and added that the actual construction project would not be possible without the help of the regional government. Residents in nearby buildings have complained about the presence of rats in the area, which they claim is caused by the lack of hygiene around the shanties.

RENOVATIONS are nearly done at the Roman archaeological site in Torrox, which will include a visitors’ centre. A total of €624,000 has been invested in the project to renovate the excavations of Torrox’s Roman lighthouse which, as well as the visitors’ centre, will also feature a night-time visual spectacle. Financed by the Junta de Andalucia (regional government) and Torrox Council, the aim of the project is to raise awareness of the abundance of different archaeological sites in the area. This particular dig - Clavicum to give it its Latin name - dates back to the third century AD and is made up of the remains of a seaside Roman villa set adjacent to a lighthouse, ceramic ovens, Roman baths and a salting factory, which was later

converted into a necropolis. The visitors’ centre is located within the lighthouse complex and provides easy access from which to view the remains of the Roman villa in the open air. It will also be possible to visit the old lighthouse building which dates back to 1864, and which illustrates the history of the lighthouse. Inside, the centre has a projection room where visitors can watch an eight-minute documentary on the history of the site. At night, the centre will put on a night-time visual spectacle, projected onto the lighthouse. Moving graphics and illustrations will recount daily life in Clavicum, as well as a tale by Pliny the Elder about how the people of the town had an encounter with a giant octopus.

Almuñecar hikers go backpacking to Acequias del Poqueira APPROXIMATELY 40 Almuñecar hikers went backpacking to the

beautiful Acequias del Poqueira. “The trail took us along

very gentle slopes and we were suddenly engulfed by fog, which

gave our surroundings a magical touch. We caught glimpses of the beautiful Picos del Sabinar and Loma Pua and the astonishing Cumbres del Mulhacen and Veleta,” said Coordinator Enrique Garin. “It was not that warm so we did not get too tired going up to the Cortijo de Las Tomas, which is 2,100 metres above sea level.

“Once we got there, we decided to take a safer route for the group since the rocks were wet from the rain. The trail was not difficult to follow and the hikers were chatting and making new friends.” He added: “Then we got to Capileira, where we rested for a while and recovered our strength with a beer or a coffee and then we went back to Almuñecar.”

Liberty Seguros and RACE new road safety campaign for pensioners

MANY accidents occur on urban roads, and in many cases, pedestrians are the victims. According to the DGT, 33 per cent of pedestrians killed on urban roads were over the age of 65. For this reason, Liberty Seguros, together with RACE (Royal Automobile Club of Spain) are conducting an awareness campaign in Spain, under the name of ‘Senior Mobility, the way forward’ aimed at older people in order to reduce the number of these accidents. This is to raise awareness for the over 65-year-old population for safer mobility with useful tips and recommendations. The project will cover the Spanish geography and actions will be developed in the cities of Granada, Alicante, Salamanca and Santiago de Compostela, amongst others. The awareness campaign will be based primarily on a ‘road show’ that will feature a mobile information room and training on road safety, especially for those over 65, as well as on other aspects that can affect ones safety, like the importance of healthy

usually take. Thus, thanks to Liberty Seguros and RACE, the project will provide a better understanding of the behaviour of the senior population on public thoroughfares and thus define increased and improved road safety policies to reduce traffic accidents, helping this group to move more safely on the streets.

Two police officers injured in hand grenade explosion TWO National Police bomb squad officers sustained serious injuries to their hands in an explosion. The policemen were hurt whilst dealing with a hand grenade that had been confiscated at a street market in Sevilla, said a police spokesman. The explosion occurred at the headquarters of the bomb squad of the National Police (Tedax) in Cortijo del Cuarto outside Sevilla, while the officers were handling a Spanish Civil War grenade found at a street market on Calle Feria. They were rushed to the Hospital Virgen del Rocio and it has been reported

that one of them will have to have his hand amputated. The extent of the injuries suffered by the other officer remains to be determined. This is not the first time law enforcement officials have found explosive devices from the Civil War. Back in July, the Guardia Civil in Aragon defused a mortar grenade that had been stuck in a pine tree for 70 years. Its deadly load was still intact. According to police sources, the grenade was high up in the tree and had gone unnoticed for the last seven decades. It is assumed that the missile missed its target

and became stuck in the tree. Tedax has so far defused 111 explosive devices in Aragon. Most of them were artillery shells weighing between four and 45 kilograms. However, they have also disarmed hand grenades and four aerial bombs, with the last one being found in June 2013 in a pond in Teruel. It weighed 50 kilograms and had to be removed with the help of expert divers. Old explosive devices are extremely unpredictable because they have been out in the open for so long, according to Tedax experts.

Spaniards likely to General weather let cat out of bag conditions in Spain Advertising feature

A LARGE percentage of Spaniards are unable to keep a secret. An astonishing 89 per cent of Spaniards would not think twice before spilling the beans about a juicy secret. This is one of the conclusions drawn by a study recently conducted by lastminute.com. The survey looked at how people behave when guarding a secret and focused on

5,500 people from six European countries, namely Spain, Italy, Germany, Ireland, France and the UK. Researchers concluded that while Spaniards are more likely to let the cat out of the bag, they are also more inclined to keep tight-lipped about personal matters. In fact, 56 per cent of Spanish nationals surveyed said they have something to hide, something they have never shared with anyone. AS the climate has warmed globally, some types of extreme weather have become more frequent and severe in recent decades. Extreme heat, intense precipitation, and drought, are on the increase. Heat waves are becoming longer and hotter. Heavier rainfalls and flooding are more frequent. In a wide swing between extremes, drought is also more intense and more widespread. Small changes in the averages of many key climate variables can correspond to large changes in the weather. These changes are extremely difficult to predict and this weather variability can be extremely costly. Other atmospheric pheno-mena, such as hail, snow and fire, previously uncommon in regional climates such as the Mediterranean, are now becoming more common occurrences. The Spanish government is part-privatising the subsidiary by making 49 per cent available to the public. Last June the Irish-owned airline, turned down in the past by Ferrovial for a share in London-Gatwick, revealed it was

“seriously interested.” It was considering either the 21 per cent to be split among at least three majority shareholders or the 28 per cent offered to private investors. At the beginning of September the company’s marketing director Kenny Jacobs claimed they were still interested. Catalan banks ready to move CATALONIA’S two biggest banks would, if necessary, move their head offices from the region. The intentions of CaixaBank and Banco Sabadell in the event of regional independence from Spain were revealed in a report by the Swiss investment Bank, UBS. It corroborated sources close to both banks which also claimed that they have already informed international investors of their intentions. Secession seems ‘a distant prospect’ for Catalonia, wrote UBS’s chief strategist Justin Knight in the run-up to Scotland’s independence referendum on September 18. The two banks have already taken appropriate

steps to be able to relocate their headquarters “to minimise potential impact on access to potential funding sources,” UBS continued. As revealed by the national daily El Mundo last July, CaixaBank’s subsidiary Microbank has headquarters in Madrid and a Bank of Spain permit to operate. CaixaBank would only need to transfer its assets to Microbank to remain in the Eurozone. Sabadell’s new statutes do not require its head office to remain in Barcelona. ‘All scenarios’ have been anticipated to defend interests of clients and shareholders, including a change of headquarters, Sabadell board announced.

The Eurozone stimulus measures - 0.05 per cent interest and cash injections - had the minister’s backing, but De Guindos also urged structural reforms throughout the Eurozone, drawing attention to the impact of the euro’s depreciation on Spain.

Spotlight is now off Scotland referendum and the pound rallies in the aftermath

T

HE main downside risk for Sterling recently was the uncertainty of the Scottish referendum. The ‘No vote’ on September 18 removed the huge political and economic uncertainty of the 307-year-old union. The news was greeted with euphoria by the markets as the pound rallied in the aftermath. Investors are now weighing the long term ramifications of the event. Although the Kingdom has remained united, some investors fear that the fissures opened up by the Scottish referendum may take a long time to heal, and the debate over devolution within the UK is now an open question. In the meantime, growth in the UK has slowed from its peak in the first half of 2014 and the Bank of England might not be too keen to raise interest rates as early as the market wants. The famous promise in the summer of 2012 by European Central Bank President Mario Draghi to do “whatever it

takes” to save the single currency has effectively managed to avert a break up but hasn’t resolved the crisis. Since that summer, the economic situation in Europe has failed to improve and although the Eurozone emerged from recession last year, growth has ranged from lacklustre to fragile. Eurozone growth up to June remained flat and worse still, the 18-member bloc’s output is still 2.7 per cent below its peak. Compared to the US and the UK, where output has rebounded and is now higher than at the start of the crisis in 2008.

EUROZONE: Low inflation has been a major concern. News out of the Eurozone keeps disappointing and with high unemployment, weak growth and falling prices, risks of a Japanesestyle lost decade are reigniting fears of a new crisis. Low inflation has been a major concern for the European Central Bank. Low prices can initially appeal as a short-term financial benefit to

shoppers but are poisonous for countries with high debt burdens. Once deflation takes hold, consumers tend to delay purchases as they expect prices to fall even further. The ECB has been forecasting that price growth would pick up in time but low energy prices and a strong euro have proved forecasts

wrong as prices continue falling month after month. It’s now clear that the easing of market panic after Draghi’s 2012 promise induced too much complacency. The risks are now so serious the ECB has no other choice than to act on interest rates as they preannounced at September’s meeting. By cutting interest and announcing ABS purchases, the central bank sent a very strong message to the market. Interest rates were cut to fresh record lows, and Draghi’s Central European Bank will also try to boost credit conditions further by purchasing asset-backed securities and covered bonds. Over the next three years the market will be flooded with around €500 billion. This wall of money heading towards the financial market caught investors by surprise. And while some detractors say it’s too late, this amount of stimulus from the European Central Bank will certainly be welcome.

Savings without feeling the pinch Loose change A look at finance for females

Jane Plunkett jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com

W

OULDN’T it be great to be able to save money? The majority of people would love the idea of putting away a few quid every week and seeing their savings build up over time. A bulky savings account can get a person out of all sorts of financial problems; because no matter how hard we try to budget and stick to that budget, unforeseen costs always pop up. The car breaks down, an uninsured mobile phone is stolen, a fine arrives at the doorstep from traffic control or suddenly the bathroom toilet decides to go on the

PACKED LUNCH: Preparing food at home is much more economical. blink and it’s essential to replace it! A recent survey from the UK reveals that 42 per cent of people save out of necessity, but very few feel they have the ability to save for a rainy day. Making ends meet is hard enough, without trying to put extra cash away for unforeseen costs.

There are, however, little ways to start saving without feeling too economically pressured. By simply changing small day-to-day habits, it’s possible to start building up that illusive savings account. Some of the top money savings tips revealed in the British report are easy to

implement. Using vouchers, coupons and money-off apps are considered the most popular way to make savings, with 50 per cent of people saying they regularly use them to get money off their purchases. Next on the list is taking a packed lunch to work. This is definitely a big

money saver. Preparing food at home is much more economical and healthy. And it allows you to put the money you’ve saved on dining out straight into your savings account. A simple piggy bank may not look like much on the kitchen counter top, but by adding your loose change every day - you’ll be surprised how it adds up. If a gourmet palate is leaving you strapped for cash each month then I’m afraid it’s time to downgrade to a cheaper supermarket. And while on the subject of food, never go shopping on an empty stomach. It’s hazardous for your wallet. Finally, leave the car at home and walk or use public transport. And cut up those credit cards. If you don’t have the money in cash, then you can’t buy it! Simple.

OPINION & COMMENT

Tunnel vision of doctors can hurt the ill I DO not know all the facts but I think that Frank McDonnell MD (whatever that stands for) is jumping to conclusions when he assumes that Ashya King’s parents probably removed him from hospital to avoid blood transfusions and opted for “alternative” (his quotation marks, not mine) treatment. Firstly, although I did read just once that Mr and Mrs King were Jehovah’s Witnesses, nowhere was it ever suggested that they used their religious beliefs to deny their son treatment. In fact even the hospital made it clear that there had been no objection to treatment on these grounds. Secondly, proton beam treatment is not ‘alternative’ but another form of cancer therapy not available on the NHS or in the UK. It is more likely the doctor in question was convinced of the accuracy of his own diagnosis and worried that another hospital might prove him wrong. Many years ago my then 13year-old son was very ill in Northwick Park Hospital in London. The paediatric gastroenterologist there was so convinced my son was coeliac that he performed an endoscopy without any sedative - three times, because he couldn’t get the test results he expected. When we wrapped our frail son in a blanket and took him out of that hospital we were told not to bring him back and all his medical notes were ‘lost.’ At St Bartholomew’s Hospital he was correctly diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and was soon into remission. Doctors do not always know best. Sonia Kleyman, Javea (Alicante)

Hasty actions DID Ashya King’s parents really have a well thought-out and careful plan? I - like many others, I expect - think not. We all know one cannot sell a property overnight in England let alone in Spain, so how long did they intend to keep the child without medical treatment? And

why did they have to come to Spain? They have family here so why did they not ask them to sell the house? I understand they allegedly told a reporter they wanted to obtain as much publicity as they could get? Is that protecting a very sick boy? Or did they see pound signs when the news broke? I can tell you right now that I hope the boy survives and my heart goes out to him. I do know what it is like to move heaven and earth for a terminally-ill child. My sister had a beautiful little girl who went to America with the help of the NHS for treatment. However, the treatment did not work and seven months and two weeks before her 10th birthday she gave up the fight, so I do know how it feels to have a very sick child. Rita Knight, a holidaymaker (by email)

State steps in THE letter from Frank McDonnell contains a host of inaccuracies.

Firstly there is no such thing as a ‘strict JW’ as all Jehovah’s Witnesses are united in their rejection of blood transfusions. Secondly blood transfusions were never an issue as regards the treatment! Ashya was under hospital treatment but he was not removed to avoid blood transfusion but to obtain alternative treatment, one denied by the UK. Thirdly being made a ward of court is a rare event in the UK in these circumstances. Legislation continues to be interpreted in different ways so there needs to be a consideration of many factors for a more holistic approach.

Fourthly, to state that treatment in the UK is the only hope for the child is completely ridiculous and assumes there is no other sophisticated treatment available that respects the wishes of the parents. Why Frank McDonnell thinks that the wishes of the state should over-ride the wishes of the parent in any event is not stated. Subsequent developments have shown that in fact the U.K authorities were heavy-handed and it is simply not correct to imply the parents were in any way negligent. G C Hall (by email)

Lessons learned I WOULD like to respond to Alan’s letter about learning Spanish. We have spent a small fortune trying to learn the language but feel resentful to be called ignorant, arrogant, an embarrassment and told we should leave. Perhaps Alan has an aptitude for languages like someone who is artistic, musical or talented with their hands. We were

I WOULD love to know why over the last two months, the benchmark cost of oil has fallen from approximately $110 to $96 - a drop of around 12 per cent, whereas the euro has weakened from about $1.38 to roughly $1.30, a drop of 6 per cent. Pump prices in Spain should have dropped by 5 per cent at least but they haven’t changed at all. I have always found Spanish pump prices to change quickly. Are we again being ripped off, either by government or petrol companies, or is there a sensible answer? I can’t be the only one to ask since the discrepancy should be obvious to anyone. Tony McKenna, Altea (Alicante)

Equal praise WE have just returned from a 14week stay in our home in England and a friend had kept the Your Say page where Lily Lucy wrote about my original letter praising the Spanish health service. We share our time between Spain and the UK and are in a position to make comparisons between the two. Not that I intended any criticism whatsoever to the UK National Health Service. I think it is superb although due to the enormous pressure that A & E departments are under owing to lack of staff, waiting times tend to be quite extended for nonemergency patients. The remarkable attention I received here justified my letter of praise, I thought. If I have inadvertently offended Lily, I apologise Desiree Bishop (by email)

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) With so much to think about, will it really be a wonder if something or someone gets left out? It's not just the glitz that's inspiring the action, but certain thankless tasks which are bound to crop up. Whatever the planets get up to, there'll be no stopping Friday and Saturday's enchanting delights.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) There will be enough hurly-burly to cope with at work, let alone elsewhere, so don't even think about doing everything single-handedly. Cooking, hosting and being all things to everyone shouldn't be your version of the perfect week.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) You will be ready and waiting for whatever you've organised. Then, without warning, you could have to backtrack or make other plans - you might even encounter some undeserved criticism. But no matter what happens, the weekend will definitely make up for any workaday muddles.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) The more you can offload, the happier you'll be. As you attract kindred spirits, you'll be able to look forward to the weekend whirl with family and friends. Try to be patient with those who seem to be pulled in other directions.

Sudoku Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3X3 box contains the digits 1-9. There’s no maths involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Good news should come your way this week. Regardless of how you mark it, you'll be surrounded by caring hearts. Sunday's full moon is one of two this year associated with journeys, homely connections and good fortune.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Many happy moments will keep you on your toes. With warming wishes in the wind, and a charming touch of luck, don't panic if certain events don't match up to your high standards. VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) You won't avoid the occasional mishap, but if you're tactful on Tuesday and chill out on Wednesday, the lead-up to the weekend's partying will see you go after whatever you want.

Uncaring doctor is a disgrace

OTHERS THINK IT

W

HY is it that almost every time there is a scandal concerning UK doctors, the offending practitioner has an almost unpronounceable name? This latest incident where a local GP refused to treat an elderly lady who fell down just outside his practice is no exception. Christopher Uwagboe failed to attend to the poor 88-yearold woman because - wait for it - he was ‘not first aid trained’. Did you ever hear such pure unadulterated poppycock in your whole life? How can a doctor, who presumably goes through years of medical education, not be familiar with a procedure practised by the Boy Scouts? Did he somehow do a Miliband and miss a bit? Well, whatever the reason, his decision to remain ensconced in his surgery, hiding behind what also

appeared to be an extremely rude and equally uncaring receptionist, is a disgrace. Let us just hope that his patients are so disgusted they give his surgery a wide berth in the future and hit this incompetent right where it hurts, in his no doubt, well stuffed pockets. Did anyone stay awake all the way through Ed Miliband’s diatribe at the Labour Party Conference? What an intelligence-insulting load of bull. How anyone in their right mind could want to elect the likes of him and Balls is quite beyond me. These people are the same individuals who left the country bankrupt. One even left a note for his successor informing him that there was no money left to work with! One thing that did strike me during his ill-fated oration was the amount of times he used the word ‘friends’. Substitute ‘comrades’ for the word and I

ILL-FATED: Ed Miliband’s Labour Party Conference speech. think you’ll have a far better idea as to where he and his party of losers are really coming from. Couldn’t help wondering at Stephen Fry’s admission that

he took cocaine at Buckingham Palace. Not quite sure what he hoped to gain by the confession. Talking of doing odd things in strange places did however jog a

distant memory with me. In 1958, when I was doing a season at the London Palladium (I did start at the top and work down!) I once committed an amorous act with a showgirl across the Queen’s chair in the Royal Box. I bet she wouldn’t do much purring had she been aware of that little Leapy letch. Well, you know I’ve always been a true royalist. (Whatcha mean too much information?) On that somewhat sordid note I’ll take my leave for another week. Duvet time again. Ah well, bring it on, only 75 days till Christmas. Keep that mail coming. Although I can’t reply to them all, rest assured every one of ‘em gets read and occasionally even taken on board. Multi-use cosmetics for skin and hair-care take off

INNOVATIVE COMBINATIONS: With new products, packaging, marketing and merchandise. BLURRED lines between beauty technology are becoming increasingly common, with overlaps between skincare, haircare and colour cosmetics. Combining the most exciting technology and marketing from more than one category, manufacturers are creating new combinations with new products, packaging, marketing and merchan-dise. Jane Henderson, Global President of Mintel’s Beauty and Personal Care Division said: “Mixologiste is fast becoming the stand-out trend that spans all beauty and personal care categories. “While manufacturers have worked with multi-functionality for a number of years, we are now seeing them take inspiration from completely different categories to create new products and marketing messages. “The huge success of BB creams

has led manufacturers to think about how they can build on their existing portfolios and add excitement to sometimes saturated sectors. “New combinations will continue to evolve, resulting in new products, packaging, marketing and merchandising. This will add a new sense of excitement to the market and will drive innovation in the year ahead.” Mintel’s consumer research highlights the popularity of multifunctional make-up in the US, with as many as 70 per cent of US female consumers expressing an interest in multifunctional lip products, and 65 per cent showing interest in multifunctional facial coverage products; for example, those which combine the benefits of foundation and concealer. And while saving time and cost are highlighted as the benefits of these products, the research shows how time-poor US consumers

perceive time-saving (68 per cent) to be a greater benefit than reduced costs (63 per cent). But while multi-functionality is popular in the US it is not as popular in the UK where just a quarter of women say they are interested in products which have cosmetic benefits as well as care for the skin, such as BB cream and tinted lip balm. Vivienne Rudd, Director of Insight, Beauty & Personal Care at Mintel, said: “It’s an exciting time for colour cosmetics, which have extended their scope into unexpected areas. Hair chalks blend make-up with temporary colourants, primers now extend to pre-styling treatments and CC creams have moved beyond facial colour cosmetics into nail-care, lipsticks and even hair-care. “The coming years will see even more developments as manufacturers build on excitement and pique consumers’ interest.”

Prepare your garden for a feast of colour in time for Christmas

Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

ONE of the joys of having a property in Spain is the pleasure of experiencing a colourful garden at Christmas. A garden that motivates you to sit out and enjoy the winter sun and perhaps even eat Christmas lunch outdoors before a glass of brandy and hot mince pies in front of a roaring log fire as the afternoon cools off. There are five main things to be done: 1. Resist doing the major annual garden cut-back in the autumn as you would in Northern Europe. It is best done during the months of January and February. Earlier will mean few flowers in December. 2. Throughout the autumn aim to prolong the flowering of existing perennials and shrubs by continuously deadheading as soon as flowers die and the cutting back of unsightly branches to stimulate new flowering shoots. If a dry autumn also continue to water. 3. Stimulate the early flowering of shrubs and trees that often do not flower until early to midJanuary. The three main requirements are to plant selected plants in southfacing beds sheltered from cold winds, to keep plants watered in garden beds or containers and to feed with a high potassium feed. 4. If your garden is not already fully planted, plant up some of the shrubs and

SPECTACULAR: The early flowering mimosa will be covered in yellow flowers. trees we list below during October and November. 5. Purchase a selection of plants in flower just before Christmas. These can be for sunny spots in the garden, the front step and porch or covered terrace. We list below some of the garden plants that can be in flower at Christmas. The strawberry tree (arbutus unedo) which also has bright red fruits to brighten a corner of the garden. The fruits are edible but we prefer to leave them for wild birds. The galan de noche that might be persuaded to pump out its heavy perfume on Christmas Eve. Of the early flowering trees the delebeta and bon accuel varieties of mimosa are spectacular with their network of branches covered in masses of yellow flowers. Shrubs Lantanas are reliable in most gardens and also

hibiscus in warmer spots. Likewise roses if they have been deadheaded, watered and fed during the autumn. Poinsettias can replace a garden Christmas tree.

Climbing shrubs Bougainvillaeas, bignonias, blue and white solanums and perfumed white and yellow jasmines can produce spectacular year end displays.

Perennials The frutescens and coronarium chrysanthemums and euryops daisy give reliable colour in many gardens. If you are very lucky a few margeritas may

still be in flower. Succulents Several succulents can come into flower around Christmas notably the red hot pocker aloes and the aeoniums with their bright yellow spires of flowers and the various varieties of Christmas cacti. Winter annuals The most reliable for colourful displays are the seasonal pansies, busy lizzies, stocks, wallflowers and also petunias which are now available almost all the year round. Christmas bulbs Our favourites include pots of specimen amaryllis and hyacinths, and in warm corners of rockeries anenomies, crocuses, miniature daffodils and freesias. These bulbs need to be planted as soon as possible. (c) Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com October 2014

OPINION & COMMENT

More faces than a town hall clock was horrified that I should take such pictures yet they were typical holiday brochure content. Meanwhile, on newsagents bottom shelves are magazines aimed at pubescent girls, the contents so torrid they would make a sailor blush. In less censorious times there was a time and place for everything including pornography. This was not in children’s school textbooks. There was probably more sauciness and eyebrow-raising behaviour to be found in 19th century music halls than in 1970s’ television studios. Have we decided? Are we prurient or prudish? We are certainly hypocritical. Society today has more faces than a town hall clock. We get ourselves in a tizzy because women of some faiths wear burqas or niqab veil. There is no Koran requirement for them to do so. Let’s stop getting hot under the collar about the dress preferences of some Muslim offshoots. It is none of our business, we

have enough problems of a moral nature of our own without wagging the finger at others. Western Christianity has its share of odd religious sects. Do you open the door to a Jehovah’s Witness? Born again Evangelists of the United States make your hair curl? The multi-wife Mormons are a strange bunch but okay because they are not Muslim. How many of us discard their ways and adopt simpler Amish lifestyles? To preserve female modesty some Muslim women do cover up. Why do Westerners want to strip them of their clothes and their modesty; deprive them of respect, their menfolk of dignity? We rant about being able to see only the eyes of clad Muslim women. The less bigoted know that a woman’s eyes are the most appealing part of a woman’s anatomy. Ironically, the eyes are the only part of Western woman covered up when she is wearing little else but sunglasses. Many faiths, not just Muslim, are offended that strangers see parts of sunbathing or partying Western woman that should be seen only in bedrooms or by their gynaecologist. In truth, when it comes to closed minds, there isn’t that much between ourselves and various extreme sects.

E foolishly claim ours is an enlightened society. We war on nations we feel are in desperate need of a little of our take on liberation. We mock Victorian bashfulness in covering the legs of tables, which they never did. In many ways the Victorians were far more liberated than we are. Better educated, less bigoted, they were simply more discreet about it. They could read books since burnt on the bonfires of political correctness. Such is current hysteria over grey area sex that men dare not stroll past playing fields for fear of being labelled a pervert. Finding pet care cover for high days and holidays By Lamia Walker of HousesitMatch JOHN and Miranda moved to Spain for John’s work 20 years ago, and live in Fuengirola, regularly returning to the UK for family events and holidays. Even with a good network they still find it hard to find suitable pet care for their three cats especially over the Christmas/New Year period. This is when local sitters prefer to be at home with family or take a holiday themselves. So what to do..? This year John researched online, to see if there might be an easier solution than the constant telephoning of their entire list of contacts to see if anyone was staying locally in the holidays and could move in for two weeks to feed the cats and keep an eye on things. It feels like

an imposition to ask. John knew that there are online networks to help you find experienced housesitters. After registering with HouseSitMatch.com for free he came across Sara and Andrew, a professional Australian couple travelling the world for 12 months with their twin babies. ‘Perfect’ John thought. ‘They need a comfortable home and good wifi so Andrew can work while they experience Spain at Christmas. We need someone in the house to care for the cats and security. A fair exchange!’

Pregnant or not recognise the signs David THE Dogman

THE clinical signs of pseudo pregnancy range from subtle to extreme. In some cases, they are so convincing that even experienced breeders are confident that a litter is coming. Signs include behavioural changes (anorexia or appetite fluctuations, whining, restlessness, signs of aggression, depression, or anxiety), maternal behaviour, mammary problems, vomiting and abdominal distension. It is not difficult to diagnose false pregnancy in dogs. If the animal went through a heat cycle six to 12 weeks

PREGNANCY: Could it be false? before the onset of clinical signs of pregnancy, whether or not she was known to be bred during that time, a veterinarian will take a thorough history of her recent physical and behavioural conduct and will perform a complete physical examination. Radiographs and ultrasound can be used to conclusively confirm the presence or absence of pregnancy, and no additional blood, urine or other tests should be necessary.

Radiographs and ultrasound are also useful to rule out the possibility of a serious condition called pyometra which is an accumulation of pus inside the uterus from bacterial infection. Pyometra can be lifethreatening and must be treated as an emergency. It is uncommon, but still possible, signs of false pregnancy will appear in a bitch who actually became pregnant and then either aborted or reabsorbed her puppies, in which case the risk of developing pyometra increases dramatically. Unless you are showing your bitch I strongly recommend that they are spayed before the first heat. Vets have different opinions, some agree with me others say after the first heat. From a behavioural point of view the earlier we teach and train our pets the better.

Give your dog a healthy treat from Barker & Barker

TO give your dog a healthy treat look no further than Barker & Barker. Our four legged friends love to be praised and as a training aid treats can be very helpful. But owners should be careful what they feed their dogs as the wrong sort of treat can lead to problems like obesity and even behavioural problems. For that reason it is important to select a treat that can fit into a dog’s dietary needs, that is healthy and specially formulated for your pet. Many vets and dog experts including the EWN’s David the Dogman - recommend Barker and

Barker’s range of treats and supplements. The company has been manufacturing its own natural and low fat products for dogs since 1976, when they were first used at Crufts. Barker and Barker develop their products with the dogs’ health in mind. There are no artificial additives or cereal in any of their products. They do not add any carb loaded ingredients such as oats, corn, wheat, rice or grains. Barker and Barker are committed to never using generic meat, fish or vegetable ‘meal’ which basically

contain all the ‘waste’ parts of the core products. They only use top quality ingredients intended for the human food chain that are quality assured and that are guaranteed to be produced to the highest food safety standards. Consequently when you give your dog one of their products you can be sure that it is going to be naturally healthy, low in fat, full of goodness and, most importantly, they will be nutritionally in line with a dog’s natural diet.

New Skoda Fabia to debut in Paris THE new Škoda Fabia will be making its debut at the Paris Motor Show which starts today (Thursday, October 2) and runs until Sunday October 19. The manufacturer will be celebrating a double world premiere: as a hatchback and an estate. The thirdgeneration model comes with innovative safety, comfort and infotainment systems that are usually featured in higher vehicle classes, and is more environmentally friendly than ever before. The boot boasts an impressive 330 litre capacity, making it the biggest within its segment. The new Fabia will be available in Europe as early as November with the Fabia Combi following in early 2015. After the Octavia, the Fabia is the bestselling Škoda model with a total

With the completely new third generation, the ‘crisp’ small car again sets standards. “The new Fabia is, in every respect, simply more car and offers both innovative technology and emotionally-charged

design,” said ŠKODA CEO Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. “A great car for heart and mind, ideal for the modern, urban mobility of today. We are very confident that the new Fabia will write another chapter in the model’s success story, win over new customer groups and, as an important pillar of our growth

strategy, further strengthen the brand’s shine within international markets,” he added. For the first time at Škoda, the new Fabia allows smartphones to be easily paired to the car via MirrorLink™ technology and with the new SmartGate function.

ŠKODA is bringing the intelligence of the smartphone into the car - easily and at a reasonable price. Thanks to new engines (four petrol and three diesel), a targeted weight reduction - down to 980kg at its leanest and improved aerodynamics, consumption and emission values of the new ŠKODA Fabia are up to 17 per cent lower. The most efficient Fabia will be available in 2015: the 55 kW (75 PS) 1.4 TDI Fabia GreenLine. It has a diesel consumption of only 3.1 l/100km, corresponding to CO2 emissions of just 82 g/km. The Fabia also has innovative safety and comfort systems that were more likely to be seen in higher vehicle classes. Available for the first time in a Fabia is the Front Assistant with integrated City Emergency Braking Function and the MultiCollision Brake. The Front Assistant uses a radar sensor to continually measure the distance to the traffic

ahead. Whenever the distance is too small, the Assistant intervenes at the necessary intensity level in order to prevent a collision from optical and acoustic warnings to a short brake jolt and automatic emergency stop. The Multi-Collision Brake reduces the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a subsequent collision following an accident. The system automatically engages the brakes if it detects a primary collision. The new Fabia also has other safety systems: Driver Activity Assistant (fatigue detection), Speedlimiter, Hill-Hold Control and an electronic tyre pressure monitor. For increased comfort, optional features include KESSY (Keyless Entry Start and exit SYstem), front and rear parking sensors, the new electro-mechanical power steering and a large panoramic glass roof. At the same time, the new Fabia impresses with plenty of space and even more functionality.

I WILL start by congratulating Europe on that brilliant 16½ points to 11½ victory over the USA in the 40th Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. My stars in Perthshire were England’s Justin Rose, Ireland’s duo of Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy, Welshman Jamie Donaldson (who fired the match-winning stroke), Frenchman Victor Dubuisson and German Martin Kaymer but all credit (and more) to Paul McGinley’s wonderful team of golfers who thoroughly deserved their triumph after an impressive display of driving, pitching, chipping and putting. Each and every player was ‘up for it’ from the first to the

last tee and with tremendous support, one sensed there was only going to one winner... Europe! An aggregate attendance of 133,672 watched, cheered and admired three days of truly great sporting action, some of the best seen for years. FOOTBALL - Last weekend’s ‘big’ Premiership derbies, Arsenal-Spurs and LiverpoolEverton, both ended in 1-1 draws... leaders Chelsea, with another Diego Costa goal, defeated Aston Villa 3-0... Manchester City won 4-2 at Hull... second-placed Southampton edged QPR 2-1 with a brilliant Graziano Pelle strike... ‘wild’ Wayne Rooney scored and was sent-off as Manchester United beat West Ham 2-1... Crystal Palace clipped Leicester 2-0 and WBA equalled their best-ever PL win by blitzing Burnley 4-0. Stoke met Newcastle on Monday. Norwich went top of the Championship with a 3-1 win at Blackpool... Bristol City lead FL1 after beating MK Dons 3-2...

WET VICTORY: Jorge Lorenzo won Spain’s rain-affected GP. Burton Albion, 1-0 victors over Cheltenham, head FL2... and Dundee United, who have beaten rivals Dundee in Cup and League recently, are first in the SPL. Here in Spain, in-form Barcelona, with a Neymar hattrick, whipped Granada 6-0 to stay top of La Liga. Real Madrid are also back in business; they beat Villarreal 2-0. Looking further ahead... and in a week’s time there are crucial Euro 2016 qualifiers involving England-San Marino, Wales-Bosnia & Herzegovina,

Northern Ireland-Faroe Islands, Eire-Gibraltar, Scotland-Georgia and Spain-Luxembourg. There has been Champions League action this week and tonight Spurs, Everton and Celtic all compete in the Europa League, while this weekend it’s Chelsea-Arsenal, SpursSouthampton, Aston VillaManchester City, Manchester United-Everton and SwanseaNewcastle in the PL; ForestIpswich is the top Championship game, and it’s Walsall-Bristol City and BurtonCambridge in FLs 1 and 2.

CUP PAIRINGS - The draw for the 4th round of the League Cup is: Bournemouth v WBA; Fulham v Derby; Liverpool (who beat Middlesbrough 14-13 on penalties in the last round) v Swansea; Manchester City v Newcastle; giant-killers MK Dons v Sheffield United; Shrewsbury v favourites Chelsea; Stoke v Southampton (who knocked out Arsenal) and Tottenham v Brighton. The ties will be played during the week commencing October 27. COUNTY CRICKET Hampshire beat Glamorgan by 291 runs to win the Second Division title and clinch promotion ahead of Worcestershire who also rise to the top flight with Northants and Lancashire being relegated. MOTOR SPORT - Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha) won Spain’s rain-affected GP last Sunday after changing to dry tyres. His fellow countrymen, Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, stayed out on wets and both fell off, allowing Aleix Espargaro to finish second and Britain’s Cal Crutchlow third.

Good scoring for GINS GINS played a Texas Scramble with a difference, when players got their head round it, it was thought to be a good game. The scores were excellent, with three teams returning 50 points. A warm welcome was given to their Baviera friends and it was good to see Captain Karen at the prize-giving. The winning team was that of John Conlan and Elaine Griffiths (54 points). Second were Brian Page and Nigel Smith (52) and third Jim Burns and David Galloway (50). At Añoreta it was a Bogey competition. Some members felt that although the course is in fabulous condition and the staff are working very hard, there is in some places far too much water, with it collecting in small pockets around the course. The summer aggregate scores competition seems decided for the ladies with Lyn McAllister now on 65 points and with a third place she yet again extended her lead over the

The men’s competition is very close with Joe Dines retaining the lead on 50 points and Brian Lynch on 40. With one week to go, Joe could be caught for a tied first place. In the main competition, first was Keith Taylor (+1) with Frank Ferdinales (level) second and Dan McAllister (-1) third. For the ladies Lola Montero (-3) was first, followed

by Judy Howard (-4) and Lyn McAllister (-4) third. At Baviera they played a three ball Texas Scramble. The supposedly ‘dream team’ of Ray Craig, Ian Paterson and Steph Elsey (57.82) came good, taking the honours and three bottles of wine each. Derek Sibson, John Rose and Paula Vickerman (59.98) came second and Bob Blair, Jon Bollard and David Viles (60.20) were third.
