Arsonists target river banks SPANISH ecologists have warned against an arson campaign targeting the Velez river banks. Members of GENA lodged a formal complaint with the Guardia Civil, the Velez-Malaga Town Council and the Provincial Department for Environmental Affairs for a ‘systematic arson campaign in the Velez river groves.’ GENA released a communiqué explaining that the Velez river is the municipality’s sole natural space and that its estuary is protected by law as it is part of Andalucia’s wetland network. “Nevertheless, it is one of the most adversely affected

areas in environmental terms,” said GENA President Rafael Yus. Yus explained that as many as five fires broke out last spring affecting the

riverbanks, especially reed beds, poplars and eucalyptuses. The flames have destroyed the flora and affected the vertebrates

native to the area. “Fires have been especially harmful to nesting birds, but also to mammals and reptiles,” commented Yus.

National Police crackdown on drugs IN their ongoing war against drugs, National Police officers dismantled a drug-trafficking ring in Velez-Malaga. As a result of the operation, a woman and two men were arrested. The police seized 53 doses of cocaine and an

undisclosed amount of money. The arrests come in the wake of an investigation that focused on a Carabanchel building, where cocaine and heroin were purportedly sold. Law enforcement officials placed the building

under surveillance, which led to the apprehension of the 38-year-old woman. She was in possession of 53 doses of cocaine at the time of her arrest. It appears her underage children were present when the drugs were being sold.

The police searched the property and found three precision scales and cash. They later arrested two men, 43, who would allegedly alert the woman to the presence of the police and serve as ‘filters’ before letting any potential clients into the building.

As stated by GENA, there is reason to believe the fires have been intentionally started by young arsonists late at night. However, they are not ruling out other possible explanations, because “local farmers usually destroy the Velez river groves to increase the size of their crop producing land base.” Therefore, ecologists have requested that these fires be looked into and that the local government beef up police surveillance in the area to prevent future incidents.

Controversy over day centre THE Rincon de la Victoria day centre has been closed for two and a half years. Located on the Mediterraneo Avenue, in a property owned by Unicaja, the building has undergone a restoration project that has incurred additional costs and is taking too long, according to the PSOE, Spanish Socialist Workers’

Party. “The restoration project has cost more than €200,000,” said Antonio Chia, socialist town councillor. “They forgot the electrical wiring, which required an additional budget of €15,000,” he added. He went on to say: “Salado lied to senior citizens. Today there is no new day centre and he did not keep his electoral promise.”

On the other hand, Mayor Francisco Salado, of the conservative and Christian democratic People’s Party, said “the Rincon de la Victoria day centre will be opened on June 27. The senior citizens of Rincon de la Victoria have the right to have the best facilities possible and the government has made it a reality,” he added.

ON June 28 many city centres throughout Spain, and indeed the world, will be festooned with rainbow flags and outrageous floats - it’s gay pride day again! Officially called International Day of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Pride, it is traditional for collectives to publicly celebrate their sexuality on this day. Originally it was the day for LGBT people to promote self-affirmation and encourage the public to take a positive stance against discrimination and violence; a day for the collectives to promote dignity, equal rights and increase their visibility as a social group which celebrates its sexual diversity and gender variance.

Although June 28 still has this aim, these days it is also an excuse for a massive street party in some cities. Gay pride celebrations generally consist of outrageous costumes and floats being paraded around the city centre; always with the rainbow flag and pink triangles which are the principal symbols of the movement. A biblical plague THERE have been reports of the water in some east coast beaches in Malaga taking on a reddish colour in recent days. Some may have feared God had unleashed the fury of his wrath on southern Spain turning water into blood. But the phenomenon has nothing to do with a Biblical plague. This red tide usually happens when the populations of unicellular protists known as dinoflagellates increase to huge numbers, especially during

the summer with increasing temperatures and favourable nutrient conditions. There is another phenomenon called brown tide, associated with rapid growth in diatom algae populations.

Red and brown tides can result in toxicity problems, since some species synthesize toxins. These toxins accumulate in filter feeders - animals that feed by filtering out particles from the water - including

molluscs, baleen whales, sponges and porcelain crabs. The toxins could be passed to other organisms. It is important that experts keep an eye on toxicity levels in molluscs before being sold for consumption.

Fire scorches flat in Torrox-Costa AN entire apartment building in Torrox-Costa had to be evacuated after a fire broke out. The flames gutted a fourth-floor apartment where two men had been sleeping. “We lost everything we owned, our memories, our belongings. This is a terrible blow. “We have nothing left but the clothes we are wearing,” said Vicente Lopez, one of the men who barely made it out of the burning apartment. The fire started at 4.30am and is thought to have been caused by a short circuit in the kitchen. “I woke up to a loud noise and I thought there had been a break-

in,” said Lopez. “I opened the door and saw the whole place was engulfed in flames. There was smoke everywhere,” he added. Vicente Lopez and Juan Antonio Lopez got out of the burning flat and alerted their neighbours. The Guardia Civil, Local Police officers and the fire brigade arrived at the scene and did everything they could to put out the fire, though it was no small feat. Realising the flames had reached the hallways, the firefighters decided to evacuate all the residents of the building to ensure their safety. Seven people, including a two-yearold, had to be attended

to for the effects of smoke inhalation. The neighbours could only return to their apartments a few hours later, although the elevators were not working and there was no electricity in the common areas. Vicente and Juan Antonio survived the fire unscathed, but the flames scorched their 70-square metre, three bedroom apartment. “At least thankfully it was covered by an insurance policy,” said Vicente. “I want to put this month behind me,” he added, while friends and relatives comforted him. Less than a month ago, the restaurant he manages was robbed.

Alberto Garzon has new book MALAGA representative Alberto Garzon presented in his hometown Rincon de la Victoria his book entitled ‘The Third Republic.’ Published by Peninsula Planeta, ‘The Third Republic’ came out on June 3, one day after King Juan Carlos I abdicated after nearly 40 years on the throne and it was a bestseller in the most recent Book Fair in Madrid, according to Garzon himself. His latest book does not focus so much on the monarchy or the republic itself, but more on a political system based on participation and social justice. In his view, Spain’s democracy is procedural, but not real and the king’s abdication was accelerated to serve the troika and strengthen capitalism. When asked about King Felipe VI, Garzon said: “I am convinced his reign will be short. People want change. The monarchy’s approval rating decreased from 7 to 3.6 in only three years. It is an anachronistic institution from the past that no longer represents the people.” The 28-year-old Spanish economist is the Economic Policies Secretary for Izquierda Unida (United Left), political coalition which brings together several Spanish left-wing political organisations. In his opinion, “Spain’s two-party system is not as strong as it used to be. It suffered a terrible blow in the European elections. It only polled 50 per cent of the votes.” The United Left representative is convinced that if a referendum were held asking Spaniards to choose between the

monarchy and a new republic, “the republic would win or at least that

Lucky couple hits the ONCE lottery jackpot IT is said that a person is more likely to get struck by lightning or be attacked by a shark than winning the lottery. But a very lucky couple in VelezMalaga has beaten the odds and come away as the winners of Spain’s most popular lottery. An unemployed housewife and a waiter are the winners of €10 million after getting seven numbers right of the 7/39 lottery, otherwise known as the ‘Lotto de la ONCE.’ ONCE is a Spanish foundation which raises funds to help blind and visually impaired people. One of their most popular products is a charity lottery ticket known as the coupon. To win the 7/39 draw, lottery players must get seven numbers right out of 39. The ONCE lottery tickets are sold in clearly labelled kiosks. Dolores Leon, 44, remembers selling the couple the winning lottery ticket. Her kiosk is located on Camino de Malaga street. “I remember selling it at 8.37pm.

It was the last ticket I sold before calling it a day, so I know who won,” said Leon.

Though she refused to disclose more information about the couple, she said they are habitual customers and that they went back the following morning asking what they should do to claim the prize money. “They came back asking what they should do. They only said ‘Thank you. We really needed the money.’ They were at a loss for words.” she added. The winning ticket was sold on the day of the draw. Leon says it was a slow day because most people were home watching the coronation of Felipe VI of Spain. Cristobal Martinez, Director of ONCE in Malaga, Dolores Leon and the neighbours of Velez-Malaga celebrated the draw with a glass of sparkling white wine.

Disastrous times…

I

T has been a disastrous time for lovers of football in England and Spain. Both teams from those soccer crazy nations have had to beat a gloomy retreat after being knocked out early. So all the hopes and dreams of some of the best and most loyal fans in the world have been broken all too soon. It is a tremendous disappointment for many with all the excitement that comes with the knockout stages destined for other teams. For the Spanish it is the end of an era after eight years of dazzling success. Two European Championships and a World Cup is not a bad haul for largely the same group of players. But father time has caught

up with them and root and branch rebuilding is now needed. For England the long wait for glory goes on. But they are already further along the rebuilding road than Spain with some exciting young talent blooded in this tournament. Whatever the future holds one thing is for sure - football is one thing that England and Spain have in common. It is a shame that the opportunity for fans from both those countries to watch each other’s teams and share some banter over a beer and tapa has gone. But on the up side for football lovers, the teams left have been playing some beautiful stuff. It bodes well for one of the best tournaments in recent years.

this had risen to 1.9 million. The 40,700 hoping to find work for the first time in the first quarter of the year was three times greater than in 2007. The majority - 35,300 - were women, principally housewives pushed by the need to augment the family income during the economic crisis.

Botin sticks up for Bank of Spain EMILIO BOTIN, president of Santander Bank, defended Bank of Spain’s role during the crisis. Earlier, the outgoing president of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, had heaped responsibility for Spain’s problems on the Bank of Spain. “Whenever the European Commission asked the Spanish authorities how were the banks and how were the savings banks they always said that everything was perfect,” Durao Barroso complained. “I don’t agree with the president’s declarations,” Botin replied.

The supervisor had tried to anticipate the crisis with innovative measures, he insisted. These included the anticyclic provisions required of Spanish banks during the bonanza years, that were designed to help them survive in leaner times. It was less a problem of supervision than the deficient models of corporative and administrative control used by many of the former savings banks. Despite that, it cost less to cure the health of Spain’s savings banks than those of Ireland, Greece, the Netherlands, Portugal or the UK, Botin claimed.

“It’s always difficult to find employment at this age,” said an Adecco expert, “but trying to find work for the first time is even more dispiriting.” “These jobseekers know they face an uphill battle,” he added, “and most believed it would take at least two years to find a job and age was a drawback.”

Stating the obvious FINANCE MINISTER Luis de Guindos advised taxi drivers to move with the times. Referring to internet carsharing initiatives like Uber and Blablacar, which are bitterly opposed by licensed cab drivers, De Guindos stressed that they were obliged to respect the law. “Competition is very important, but they have to compete under

equal conditions. There can be no exemption from taxes,” said De Guindos, who heads the Spanish equivalent of the Treasury. But he also called on taxi drivers “to adapt, as we all must” to the changes that new technology has brought. “That’s obvious,” the minister concluded.

STAT OF WEEK SPANISH millionaires with net assets worth $100 million (€73.83 million) increased to 3,475 last year. This was 3 per cent more than in 2012, according to the Knight Frank 2014 Wealth Report.

Increase in mature jobseekers A RECORD number of over-45s looked for their first job between January and April. This age group is already badly affected by the economic crisis, Adecco Foundation researchers pointed out. In 2007 there were 422,000 people aged 45 or over who were out of work and by 2014

No gas crisis for Spain SPAIN is sitting pretty regarding its gas supply. Russia might have reduced Ukraine’s supply, alleging nonpayment, and depleting the supplies of other clients whose gas has to pass through the region. But unlike Estonia, Finland, Letonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia whose entire supply comes through Ukraine, Spain’s gas comes from various sources, explained the Asociacion Española del Gas (Sedigas). Last year it imported gas from 11 countries and also has six international pipeline connections. Two connect directly with Algeria, two with Portugal and another two with France. Fiftyfour per cent of Spain’s natural gas arrives via pipeline, principally from Algeria. The remaining 46 per cent is liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported in methane tankers that unload at one of Spain’s six functioning regasification plants. Here the LNG is then heated to turn it back into gas before it is piped to users. Spain currently accounts for 36.5 per cent of

BARCELONA: LNG storage facility. Europe’s regasification capacity, with plants in Sagunto (Valencia) Huelva, Cartagena (Murcia), Barcelona, Bilbao and Mugardos (La Coruña). There is another plant, at present unused, in El Musel (Asturias). “Spain even could send gas

onward to other countries,” Sedigas has revealed. The present infrastructure is sufficient to circulate 5.4 billion cubic metres of gas, but the Irun pipeline in the north of Spain will increase this to 7.1 billion cubic metres.

Less money and more margarine SPANISH families spent an average €27,098 last year, 3.7 per cent less than in 2012. There were more eggs and margarine on the daily menu and sales of loose tobacco increased as many smokers started rolling their own. Children received 21 per cent less pocket money from their parents. Holidays, eating out, cinema visits and tickets for cultural events were all reined in last year although outlay on gas, electricity and water bills increased because of higher tariffs. There was also more to pay at the chemists owing to co-payment for medication and families spent more on education. Amongst other things this was due to the steep rise in university students’ annual registration fees. Grants for textbooks,

school transport and lunches were also harder to come by. An official Family Budget Survey by Spain’s Institute of National Statistics (INE) demonstrates that despite the recent improvement to the national economy the results of this progress have yet to filter through to families. Spending fell by 14.5 per cent between 2008 and 2013 and last year’s €27,098 family average is lowest of the crisis years. Families spent 30 per cent less on shoes, clothes and items for the home during these five years while spending on sewing materials and shoe repairs rose as people literally make do and mend. The survey also asked participating families for details of their spending on drugs and prostitution.

Are toxic employees killing your business? DEMOTIVATED?: Then try the carrot and stick approach.

OCCASIONALLY we experience sloppy service from demotivated staff. Chances are the boss is out of sight figuring ways to attract new custom as fast as his apathetic employees lose old ones. I explained my car radio wasn’t working. Asking me what make and presuming he would check it out, I identified my car. Drumming his fingers on the counter, clearly thinking some village is looking for its idiot, he replies sarcastically, “No, what radio?” How I kept from dragging

him over the counter I don't know. An optician’s assistant looks at me like she just found me on the bottom of her shoe. “You do realise you will have to pay?” Is there an antidote to cretinous employees in a business environment where

it is near impossible to sack the work-shy, incompetent and downright mutinous? Try the carrot and stick approach. Reconsider the methods by which you pay staff. Tweak it so an element of incentive becomes integral to their livelihood. This could

be a bonus based on turnover or profits. Everyone likes familiarity so why not delegate key members of the staff to waiting upon regulars. Never take employees for granted, involve them as you would if they were partners

or shareholders. In fact, good staff are more important than investors. By the same token it should be pointed out to employees that you encourage clients to report their experience as a customer. By doing so, everyone who uses your business becomes a shareholder. Encourage employees to suggest ways by which their business, which you think of as your business, can be improved. Doing so involves them. They feel your business is as important to them as it is to you. A key element is to find ways to recognise not just individual but team performance. Again, this can be in the form of a bonus, financial reward, time off in lieu or restaurant vouchers. By doing things this way your staff will be as keen as you are to stamp down on the dumb insolent.

Loose change A look at finance for females

EDUCATION is essential. But it’s how we educate our children that will see them succeed later in life. Sometimes children don’t need a fancy education or a run of titles after their name to become financially stable; they just need to have a little bit of real interest in something that excites them! Too often children are bored stiff and end up day dreaming their way through secondary school and university - if they make it to higher education. This is a problem. A half-hearted attention to learning is not conducive to nurturing the next Donald Trump or Richard Branson. What kids actually need is to be

They said this was not permitted under the rules for “any other business.” They also blocked a motion to pay the Vice President, who is an architect, to produce a detailed proposal. Previously we were told that a postal ballot for a lift is against Spanish law. Is there a way forward? E.M. (Costa Blanca) A. Yes, there is a way forward, but let us take your points one by one. First, it is true that the AGM rules do not permit a vote on a major issue such as the installation of a lift, without advance notice. Such a vote cannot be taken under the last section of the Agenda, of “any other business.” It must appear on the official Agenda issued to the members well in advance of the AGM, so that they have time to make an informed decision. Second, postal ballots are not permitted for the community AGM. First you need informed advice from a lawyer not connected with your community. To install a lift, which improves accessibility, you may well find help from revised Article 10 of the new Horizontal Law, which aims to help the

preneurship classes, the students must brainstorm and develop a business, and then present the business plan to judges, who select the best project and give a healthy cash prize. Previous winners, include two students from Chicago who created a football sock with a built-in pocket for shin guards. Their idea is currently being eyed-up by professional manufacturers. The push behind all this is not just about coming up with a killer business idea, it’s about getting kids excited and thinking about becoming their own boss. Not all students are academic and this type of

education helps gives others the chance to develop skills and perhaps shine in other areas. I personally love this approach to education. The old-fashioned robotic model of learn and regurgitate - that is all too common is Spanish schools - is outdated and inapt. Let’s give our children the opportunity to explore options, get excited about business and most importantly, try to become their own boss. The idea that anyone with a good idea and some hard work can become a success is one that parents and teachers should be promoting to the next generation.

THE construction sector in Spain will hit rock bottom in 2014, however, will start to slowly recover in 2015. Nevertheless, it is not expected to reach similar figures seen in other European countries for at least five more years. The construction sector in Spain is remarkably important, thanks to its crucial contribution to GDP, around 10 per cent, the employment rate and the business network it also includes.

It also offers the opportunity to enhance employment opportunities. However, planning to live and study in another country can also be very stressful, from figuring out what side of the road people are supposed to drive on to more serious matters like finding a place to live. It is estimated that close to 100,000 foreign students have rented a home in Spain for the duration of their academic endeavours so far this year. Some students choose to hunt for a room in a shared flat before

RENTING A BEDROOM: Sometimes prices are higher than expected. arriving in Spain, while others rely on specialised intermediaries. However, many only begin to look for a place to live once they are in Spain and find that prices are higher than they expected. The average monthly rental rate

for a bedroom in Madrid is close to €350. In comparison, a student could rent a three-bedroom and 85square metre flat in Albacete or a two-bedroom and 90-square metre flat in Almeria.

Sources indicate between April and May 2013 the average rental rate for a bedroom in a shared flat was around €275 a month. It went down to €250 between August and September due to supply being greater than demand. Many real estate agencies act as intermediaries between the proprietor and the potential tenant and guarantee students a threemonth lease. Other websites specialising in home rentals require students to sign a one-year rental agreement. Rental rates usually cover cleaning, maintenance and Internet fees. Monthly rentals on Uniplaces are close to €410 for a bedroom in a shared flat, €830 for a whole flat.

Spain not at risk of new housing bubble as no increase in prices

C

IMF: Has warned against a new housing bubble.

OULD Spain face a new housing bubble? Following the 2008 outbreak of the crisis, the Spanish housing bubble burst with catastrophic consequences. It brought about the collapse of real estate agencies and forced banks to take over while prices kept plummeting in a negative trend that is not over yet. The International Monetary Fund (IMF), which seeks to promote sustainable economic growth, has warned against a new housing bubble that could possibly affect the United Kingdom, Belgium, Norway and Sweden. The list also includes Brazil, China and Philippines. The reappearance of housing bubble symptoms in these markets does not seem to affect Spain. Why? On the one hand, home prices have suffered steep declines, between 40 and 45 per cent. According to official figures, prices fell 1.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2014, compared to 2013. Home prices have declined for seven years in a row, though they have only just

begun to show signs of recovery. Recovery symptoms can also be felt in the number of property sale contracts. Home sales increased by 48.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2014. The decline of Spain’s purchasing power, unacceptable unemployment rates and the large stock of unsold homes have all put the brake on the market. Under these circumstances, prices are very unlikely to increase, which dispels fears of a new housing bubble in Spain. Much more so if one takes into account that the granting of credits is at an all-time low. The easy credit in the form of low interest rates that gave way to an increase in property sales until 2007 just will not return. Moreover, the average person in the street simply cannot afford a new home. For the time being, there are no possibilities whatsoever of a new housing bubble affecting Spain.

Hotel industry rejects plans to regulate private rentals THE Madrid hotel industry categorically rejected the local government’s intention to regulate 8,000 private rentals. The Corporate Association for Tourism Promotion (CATP) of Madrid, encompassing several hotel business associations and the Madrid Association of Travel Agencies have requested Ignacio Gonzalez, President of the Community of Madrid, to refrain from imposing control measures. As an alternative, they have suggested toughening the requirements included in an already drafted bill which is still to be passed.

The bill was submitted to the Advisory Council in late May and it is very likely that it will be green-lit. According to the CATP, the bill on private rentals of the Community of Madrid is ‘clearly permissive.’ It estimates that the number of private rentals could triple, should the bill be passed. Furthermore, the CATP believes that passing the bill could result in the disappearance of 3,000 jobs in the hotel industry. “It is an already existing phenomenon. We can’t prohibit it, but we can regulate it,” said Carmen Gonzalez, of the

Employment, Tourism and Culture Ministry. If private rentals were regulated by law, “we could guarantee tourists quality accommodations and the respect for their consumer rights.” She added that “private rental owners could be held accountable and tourists could make formal complaints when lodgings do not comply with the minimum requirements.” The bill defines private rentals as whole flats and houses that tourists can rent. It does not include individual bedrooms. If their properties were considered tourist lodgings bound by law, private rental owners would have to make

HOTEL INDUSTRY: Against regulating private rentals. sure they are included in the Tourist Businesses Registry. In addition, their rates would have to be clearly displayed. “We want to protect customer rights, eliminate unfair competition and create jobs,” said Salvador Victoria, spokesperson for the regional government. The Community of Madrid also believes regulating private rentals will encourage investment, which in turn will contribute to reactivating the economy by creating more jobs.

OPINION & COMMENT

Homes heartbreak as Catch 22 means no help for householders I TOTALLY agree with R G Waugh (Fuengirola), that if the powers that be don’t do anything, then we can use our vote in the next local elections. However, I can assure him that both the main parties have been asked about making changes to Andalucia’s Urban Planning Law (LOUA). I have also written to anyone that I could think of who might be able to help. The UK parliament cannot help as we are under Spanish Law. The European Parliament cannot help as we are under Spanish law. The Spanish Parliament cannot help as we are under the autonomous rule of Andalucia, and have no fear they have been contacted too. My main reason for writing letters is so that everyone knows about the situation, the stress and heartache that this causes, as well as the financial burden of fighting your case. You buy a house with all the correct paperwork, receive your deeds, heave a huge sigh of relief and then find out that you are not legal at all. Kath Williams (by email)

Friends united I WAS very interested to see the photograph of the Jaguar E type in a recent issue and even more surprised to see who sent it. I live in Spain now but I also worked at Jaguar Cars at the same time as John Austin who sent this photo and I have not seen or heard from him since the mid-sixties. It would be much appreciated if you can forward this e mail to John. Thank you for always producing a very informative paper. Michael Ellis, ex-Liverpool before Coventry Editor’s note: We have now put Mr Ellis and Mr Austin in touch with each other.

ARE other readers already tired of wall-to-wall sun? Even the gloomy Thames Estuary where I once lived looks inviting now. Patsy Vincent, Alicante (formerly Essex)

Plain language I FULLY agree that a European prime minister should speak at least one other language. Given the cosmopolitan ambitions of any UK government I assume David Cameron has a working knowledge of both German and Russian? When I do not understand Spanish people very well, I say: “I do not speak Spanish well enough.” When British people speak of a similar situation, they nearly always say: “They did not speak English.” Can you explain to me why they put it this way? Pieter Scheele (by email)

UKIP vs EU THE usual ‘Guardianista’ rubbish from Bill Campbell, who says UKIP has only one policy - to get out of the EU. The point is, that as Brussels makes 75 per cent of our laws (and from November 1 a lot more), this one policy affects all other areas. In addition, a condition of membership of the EU is that we sign up to the European Court of Human Rights.

WHEN YOU WRITE All letters, whether by email or post, should carry the writer’s postal address, NIE and contact number though only the name and town will be published. Letters may also be edited. Readers who have missed earlier correspondence can see all letters posted on:

For Bill to say that the effects of the EU are negligible is absurd. The UK is full up, yet we have net migration of 212,000 a year. We cannot deport foreign murderers, rapists, paedophiles and hate preachers because it would deny them their “Yuman Rights”! Roger Page, Mojacar Playa (Almeria)

Where to go? I AM allergic to a lot of medication and therefore have much I need to dispose of. I know this can be left at a chemist or any health centre but I would like to know what happens to this unused medication. Is it passed on to the poor or sent to third world countries? The

same applies to spectacles. Do opticians collect them to be sent to needy people? If there is anyone who knows whether these things are passed on to be used for the good of others I should be most grateful. Much of my unused medication is quite costly and I hate to think of it being dumped whilst many people are dying because it is unobtainable in their country. Christine Harbour, Torre del Mar (Malaga) Editor’s note: Specsavers stores around Spain do collect old glasses for charity.

Closed season MY wife and I drove all the way from Alhaurin to La Cañada, Marbella, specifically to do a spot of shopping. We were disappointed to find the whole complex closed! Another of those annoying local holidays it seems. We weren’t the only ones to be caught out: there were dozens of other folk with shopping funds burning a hole in their pockets. What defies belief is how a nation like Spain can be in such dire straits financially when it’s full of such enterprising traders with

such high business acumen. A J Harvey, Alhaurin el Grande (Malaga)

Scam alert GAS men arrived at my villa and I understood I had to have my gas checked out by law. As they seemed to have all the correct paperwork I allowed them in. They immediately removed all four of my gas regulators (two of them were only two years old). They then removed all the hoses and pipe fittings which they soldered back on, and also used copper piping from an old boiler in my garage to run another valve that I was told I needed. I then spoke to my next door neighbour and after being told this was a scam I confronted the six people who got very agitated. Unfortunately I had already paid them €485.13 and they would not refund any of the cash. I called the Guardia but when they arrived they said these people were legal and left. I took photos of their two vehicles and have circulated the registration numbers on Facebook to hopefully warn any other unwary people. I have since had a gas leak that I found in my garage fixed independently. Robin Gregory, Mojacar Playa (Almeria)

Fighting back I READ with interest Mary Goosey’s problems with cancelling her telephone contract. I sympathise as I have had a similar problem with my car insurance since moving from France to Spain. Despite sending several letters by registered mail to the company and the agent, cancelling my health, house and car insurances, it wasn’t until December they got the message. However they have continued to demand payment for insurance on one of my cars with the threat of bailiffs for non-payment. Unfortunately it is like hitting your head against a brick wall and no one seems to respond personally to the countless letters and emails I have sent. If it’s any consolation to Mary, I am now put off buying a phone package. Good luck Mary and don’t be intimidated by these companies! Grahame Arkcoll, Comares (Malaga).

OPINION & COMMENT

Diamonds are for dummies… DIAMOND encrusted baby dummies and feeding bottles are now on sale costing tens of thousands of euros. Is that a waste and symbolic that today’s children are being spoilt? Do youngsters get given too much too soon or would it be better if they were made to work for their pocket money?

N

EVILLE and Anita Hooper, both retired and living in El Rincon, Arboleas, thought it was ridiculous. Neville said: “What’s wrong with using your thumb! I had to clean shoes and do a bit of gardening to earn my pocket money. I had to help out on my dad’s allotment.” Anita said: “I had to earn my pocket money as well, I used to have to do the washing up after tea.”

STREET TALK Dave Greatrex, 66, also from Arboleas said: “Obviously these things are for people with more money than sense. When I was a kid I had to wash my dad’s car to earn a few bob. I also helped the milkman on his round at weekends. I don’t think kids today have the same opportunity to earn extra money like we did. I think youngsters should be made to work for their pocket money though.” Retired residents of Quesada Mary and Liz could not believe diamond encrusted bottles and dummies WORKED: Neville and Anita worked for pocket money.

were on sale for babies: “What a waste of money.” Mary agreed: “It is silly, people are losing their senses, it is just outrageous.” The pair agreed that even if they had millions in the bank they wouldn’t spend money on these items.” Mother of two children aged four and one, Sharon Calder, on holiday in Rojales agrees: “Baby items are expensive enough and so to spend thousands on things like dummies that are always lost and left lying around everywhere is just ridiculous. This is really just something that celebrities would buy to get into the papers and make headlines. No normal person

would buy these, it’s not about giving in to the children or spoiling them it’s about what the parents want.” RIDICULOUS: Friends Mary and Liz don’t think diamond encrusted bottles and dummies are sensible.

A descent to hell… T HE only thing going to stop young Muslim extremists from joining groups of murdering Jihadists is for their ‘religious’ leaders to cease convincing them they will enter the realms of paradise as a reward for their efforts. If they could only be taught that their crimes against humanity would put them on an inescapable spiral in the opposite direction you can bet their enlistments to these extremists’ organisations would fall to just about zero. But they won’t will they? Irrespective of whether these leaders fall into the ‘hate preacher’ category or not, I have never heard of one so called ‘moderate’ come out and put forward an alternate theory. The reason for this of course is that whatever their religious ideals, they all believe this Shangri-La hereafter ‘reward’ actually does exist. This of course, is the whole fundamental difference between decent caring Christians and the extremism of Islam. Christians believe that the more peaceful and blame free life you lead, the more chance you have of entering paradise, unfortunately these zealots believe exactly the opposite. Devout Christians truly do believe someone did actually return from the dead and teach them this was indeed the case. (Personally I retain an open mind!) All the Muslim world has is their flesh and blood leaders, who have no

proof whatsoever their theories are correct. I find that all a bit sad. Such a waste of young lives to be told they must maim, kill and die horrible deaths to achieve happiness. No, it is the religious leaders who have all this misery, maiming and destruction on their consciences. Odd that you don’t see many of them in the front line or strapped up to suicide bombs; does this mean they don’t actually want to finish up in Shangri La? Mmm. Do I detect the whiff of hypocrisy? Well the little darlings are now on their THREE MONTH vacation. I’m watching two of mine lying on the couch. They have now been there over a half an hour and have so far not spoken a word to each other! I’ll tell you one thing mobiles have brought us, lots of blessed peace and quiet. Be thankful for small mercies. I see police are now preparing a claim that Leonard Rossiter was in a gang of sex attackers working on the set of a BBC drama in 1968. Rossiter of course died in 1984. As much as I sympathise with these young ladies

who had their bums touched 45 years ago, don’t we think it’s time to call down the statute of limitations and save the taxpayer and authorities considerable time and money by moving on and getting a life? Keep the faith. Love Leapy. leapylee2002@gmail.com

REGARDING the Jolie/Hague anti-rape escapade (Leapy, Issue 1511). How in the blue blazes are they going to action this? Is someone going into darkest Africa or Islamic controlled countries to shout stop or we will prosecute you? We left South Africa to get away from crime, greed and corruption and the news of some demon raping babies because a so called witch doctor told them to do so to get rid of AIDS. The UK people need a swift kick up the backside. I am an outsider looking in and I can see there could be a lot of problems if the government of the day keeps on sticking its head in the ground, to say nothing of the ‘political correctness’ that it pushes. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) With your engine revving and the road ahead clear, a sense of great freedom is with you. There are those for whom this week is a chance to really make headway. For some, though, it is an irksome task. The difference is that some of you are taking a negative attitude. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Wanting to put things right with someone close is a good instinct to have. It would certainly give you peace of mind. Police hunt serial child abductor A KIDNAPPER is on the most wanted list of the Ciudad Lineal police department after two young children were abducted in separate incidents. Law enforcement officials have launched a manhunt to locate the whereabouts of the criminal following the two kidnappings

that have shocked Madrid. The kidnapper first struck in April, when he tricked a nineyear-old girl into getting into his car. He drove her away, held her for five hours and later abandoned her near a subway station. She was reportedly in good health, but still underwent a

thorough medical examina-tion to determine whether she had been abused. Now it seems he has done it again. The victim, six, was kidnapped near Ascao, when she was playing near a store her parents own. More than four hours later, a

passer-by found her crying in a state of shock on Jazmin street, seven kilometres from where she was taken. It was 11.30pm. The girl could barely speak and the woman alerted police. The six-year-old was taken to La Paz hospital where she was examined.

Price of petrol goes up again THE price of petrol and diesel went up by 0.37 per cent in just a week and is approaching a yearly high. By the end of last week petrol cost an average €1.427 and diesel €1.320, almost equalling the previous high in September of last year. It has now been nine weeks that petrol has cost over the €1.4 mark according to an EU petrol report. This means that filling the average petrol tank, 55 litres, now costs €78.48 and the average diesel tank, also 55 litres, now costs €72.6, which is €0.32 more than last week. As a reference, a barrel of crude Brent oil costs $114.3 while the Texas sweet light costs $106.22.

MORE CASH: Less petrol.

She was kidnapped at around 7pm. She was playing on the street with her older brother, 11. The kidnapper purportedly tricked the little girl into following him and used a ruse to gain her trust. A witness said: “Two men were watching her play. One of them was grey-haired and looked 40 or 50, the other man was blonde and younger. The older man gave the girl some rubber bands like the ones used to make bracelets, while the younger man talked to her brother to distract him.” Then she was gone. The father realised she was nowhere to be found and alerted his wife and police. It appears the kidnapper used a similar modus operandi: he tricked the girls into getting into his car, sedated them with pills, kept them in a flat for some hours, gave them a bath and abandoned them near a subway station.

As the weather hots up for summer, tips to combat the high temperatures TOP TIPS: Drink plenty of water or liquids often regardless of physical activity.

AS the weather hots up, health officials have launched their annual plan to prevent the effects of high temperature which will stay in place until September 15. The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality offers their top tips: Drink water or liquids often regardless of physical activity undertaken. Do not overindulge in drinks with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar, as they can lose more body fluid. Although anyone can have a problem with heat, pay special attention to infants

The best choice for sun glasses

Legionnaire’s

affects baby’s birth PREGNANT women have been warned against using a specific type of home birthing pool after a baby became infected with Legionnaire’s disease. It comes as a baby in the UK remains in intensive care in hospital with the disease. Samples taken from the heated pool, which has built-in filters that recirculate water and can be filled two weeks before the birth, confirmed the presence of the bacteria. It is the first reported case of Legionnaire’s disease linked to a birthing pool in England, according to Public Health England (PHE). Legionnaires is a serious lung infection giving symptoms including high fever.

and young children, the elderly and people with diseases that may be aggravated by heat and dehydration, such as heart diseases. Stay as long as possible in cool, shaded or airconditioned areas. Try to reduce physical activity and avoid sports outdoors during the hottest hours (12pm - 5pm). Never leave anyone in a closed parked vehicle. Consult with your doctor if symptoms last longer than an hour and can be related to symptoms of the high temperatures.

NICE SMILE: There are certain foods that can help whiten our teeth.

Eat dark chocolate for a whiter smile WE all know there are certain foods that can stain our teeth, but do you know the ones that can help whiten them? A dentist from Beverly Hills, USA, says dark chocolate, green tea and strawberries can help. Dr. Harold Katz says that the bitter powder of dark chocolate helps to harden the enamel surface of teeth which helps prevent staining and discolouration. Green tea also prevents staining as it

contains enzymes which stop bacteria sticking to the teeth and contains polyphenols which fight oral acids and bacteria. Strawberries contain malic acid, an enzyme that actually cleans stains off the teeth. Apples are also good as their texture toughens the gums reducing the risk of gum disease and tooth loss.

THERE is only really one criterion that we all adhere to when choosing sun glasses - aesthetics - but we really should take other matters into account if we want to protect our eyes. All sun glasses lenses have UV filters and this is what you have to look at when choosing. If the tag claims the lenses are polarised then they are suitable for sports like skiing or sailing. It is best to buy them from an optician as then you will know the lenses are EU approved and won’t hurt your eyes. The beach sellers are tempting with all the cheap knock offs but they are just that cheap knock offs. Cheap sun glasses are often made of plastic and can be dangerous for the health of your eyes; they scratch easily and is compensated for by your eyes and can lead to “tired eye syndrome” (very red eyes!).

Can you enjoy eating in your garden on the balmy scented tropical nights? Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

ON June 10 the Levante newspaper published an interesting chart indicating the number of tropical nights, when night temperatures did not fall below 20 degrees centigrade, in urbanised locations in the Valencia region. The trend is very significant, a five-fold increase since 1940 and almost a doubling since the 1970’s when tourist urbanisation began in earnest. The number of tropical nights is now approaching 90 per annum and in Murcia and Andalucía the number is probably greater. We are now in this

EVENING DINING: A plant covered gazebo with subtle lighting so you can enjoy nature to the full. annual season and it is great to arrange to eat with friends in a night scented garden, with continuous wafts of scent from plants such as Dama de Noche and San Diego, with summer drinks and tapas from 8.30pm onwards, and

perhaps not starting to eat the main courses until even 10pm or later. Are you able to do this with pleasure in your garden? Do thick high hedges hide you from neighbours, have you planted night scented

plants in strategic locations down-wind from your regular eating places, have you located outdoor speakers so that good background music can be played, have you located cooking and eating places in the heart of the garden

to enjoy nature to the full including internal vistas lit subtly by floodlights, the night chorus of croaking frogs from a pond with the trickle of water from fountains and bats flashing past, and perhaps a nightly walk by a family of hedgehogs? I have three main evening eating places in the garden.

A plant surrounded gazebo with facilities for cooking grills, paellas, tagines and fideos; an open terrace for eating baked and barbecued meats and fish on and in a Mexican oven; and a covered eating terrace outside the kitchen with a great night time vista of the heart of the back garden for eating things prepared in the kitchen should it rain. Amazingly it did rain, or rather drizzle, for an hour yesterday evening even though the grand total of the precipitation was just one millimetre. But just a dozen kilometres away our neighbouring village had a really heavy storm and harvest devastating hail stones. Hopefully you purchased a house away from mosquito ridden marsh lands and planted lantanas near windows, doorways and eating terraces to deter the occasional flying insect that has escaped the gecko army on the walls of the house.

Stop press Three hundred practical ways of reducing the watering needs of your Spanish Mediterranean gardens. One important action to take to ensure that the summer evenings and nights can be enjoyed to the full is to ensure that your garden requires the minimum watering and maintenance so that you are fully relaxed preparing the night’s drinks, tapas and main courses dinner for family and friends. Dick Handscombe’s latest book includes 300 practical ideas for reducing the watering needs of your garden. It is available inexpensively as a soft back and Kindle book from Amazon Books UK and Spain etc.. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com / June 2014

Round Spain on a plate: Zaragoza

ZARAGOZA is the capital city of Aragon, in the north east of Spain, and has a wide variety of traditional gastronomy mainly revolving around saffron and meat, rather than fish, due to its being inland. Nobody can visit the area without trying their most typical dish: the Chilindron which consists of a sauce made with a variety of vegetables, tomatoes, peppers and a lot of garlic, traditionally served over braised lamb but chicken is also a popular alternative. Cordero a la pastora (shepherd’s lamb) is another popular dish in the area, which is braised lamb served in its own juices with boiled or roast potatoes. The only traditional fish dish is bacalao (cod) which is usually served with a saffron sauce and boiled vegetables with a thick tomato sauce on the side. For dessert the must-eat is the adoquin de Catalayud (Catalayud cobble stone), a very large boiled sweet, which always comes wrapped in a paper depicting the Virgin of the Pilar (local patron saint). Another traditional dessert is migas con chocolate (breadcrumbs in chocolate).

Mouth watering punches MAKING cocktails individually at big summer parties can be a chore so instead just make them all at the same time and call it a punch! You just pour all the ingredients into a big bowl and watch everybody enjoy it. Here are a few easy and good looking summer punches to keep you cool and refreshed as well as giving you that little extra boost of alcohol. Sparkling pink punch. For this you will need a bottle of sparkling rose wine or a decent cava, one cup of club soda, a litre of pink grapefruit juice and a bottle of dry vermouth. Once you have

SUMMER PUNCHES: Refreshing and easy to make. all the ingredients together just pour them into a large bowl to taste and decorate with seasonal fruit. Red sangria. Everyone is familiar with sangria but here is an extra easy

way to prepare it: get a bottle of wine and another of club soda or lemonade and pour into a bowl, then get some Cointreau or Triple Sec and add to taste. Decorate with fruit and

it’s done! White sangria. Red sangrias less popular cousin this can be just as delicious and maybe even more refreshing; it contains all the same ingredients as above but with white wine instead of red. Berry rum punch. The amount of each ingredient varies according to taste but you will need some fresh raspberries, orange juice, lemon juice, pineapple juice and a bottle of rum. Mix as desired and serve with a decoration of mint leaves and fresh berries. Now there is no excuse for not serving your guests with pretty drinks.

Faeces... a nasty habit Entertain me! David THE Dogman

COPROPHAGIA, to give the proper name to the condition where dogs eat faeces, is a natural form of behaviour which most dogs learn from puppyhood when their mother will clean up after them. It happens more in puppies which come from rescue kennels and pet shops. It can also be started by poor house-training where owners do not clean up after the pup. Boredom is another cause. Dogs that spend long periods alone in the garden or in kennels can develop this habit. In kennels, dogs will copy other dogs doing it. Don’t rub a dog’s nose in its excrement. This only teaches dogs to eat the evidence to avoid

punishment. Don’t shout or chase the dog away. It will only learn to eat faster. Do remove the faeces, especially if you live in a warm climate, for they encourage mosquitoes. You can also treat faeces with Tabasco or peppers. The dog will not find that taste very rewarding. It could be the dog is just hungry. Split the daily food ration into several portions and feed the dog three or four times a day with a higher fibre content. Alternatively, the dog could have a health problem. There is a condition called Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, where a lack of

enzymes in the pancreas will result in dogs being ravenously hungry. Dogs suffering from this will eat anything. Although the eating of faeces is absolutely repellent to humans, the smell and texture is attractive to dogs. Dogs have a different palate to our own. If all else fails, only allow the dog off lead with a muzzle. Taste is not such an important sense to dogs, despite claims to the contrary. NATURAL BEHAVIOUR: Where dogs eat their own faeces.

By Lamia Walker of HouseSitMatch ONE of the challenges I face in running the housesitting network is finding fun ways to write some of the fab stories our members share with us. We love these stories, they show real solutions to problems. Here’s a lovely one that involves an expat owner, several four legged friends and a pet-friendly family of sitters from the UK! Owner Donnie, based near Murcia, came to us through a friend of a friend who had seen the website in France! “I need someone who can look after two horses, two dogs and a cat in August - oh, and the pool will need cleaning.” Mid-August, school holidays, pool and pets..? Hhmmm! That day I had an email from a friend saying how she had lost her job, was going freelance, and was looking for a fun and affordable way to spend the summer with her daughters, maybe on a farm in the UK so they can feed and ride horses. I sent her Donnie’s home owner profile. She registered as a sitter. They matched online. Another fabulous and very real solution!

T this time of year, air travel’s uppermost in many people’s minds. Not always a pleasant experience what with queuing, flight delays, screaming kids etc. Nonetheless, cabin crew do liven things up with the PA system - occasionally at the expense of passengers. EasyJet’s stock eye-opener was: “Ladies and gentlemen, we would like to inform you that we have on board someone very special today. He’s an 89-year-old gentleman making his very first flight. So, on leaving the plane, would you please shake hands with your pilot.” A Virgin flight attendant once announced: “It’s customary after a long-haul flight to ask for volunteers to clean the toilets. If you are travelling with someone who needs help, put your own mask on first, then help your husband.”

BA passengers were also reportedly delighted with the following: “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard

this British Airways flight to Denver. If your travel plans do not include visiting Denver, then now would be the perfect time to make yourself known to a member of the cabin crew.” Maybe cabin crew having fun at our expense is their way of getting their own back for the daft questions they’re asked on board. Such as: “Where are the lines between countries?” from those who’re convinced there are visible lines, like on a map. “When do I change the time on my watch or will it change itself as we go?” “I don’t mean to scare you, but something out there has been following us for hours!” pointing to the light on the wing. And: “Have we landed yet?” But a recent survey of 3,000

Virgin Atlantic cabin crew threw up maybe the daftest yet: “Can you open the window?” “Can the pilot stop the turbulence?” “Where are the showers?” Sure you can roll down the window. That minus-60 temperature will be so invigorating! Naturally, the pilot can stop the turbulence he was only doing it on purpose. And the showers are right this way. Just open the door that says: “Do Not Open”...

GT3-R - the rarest and most dynamic tourer BENTLEY has announced what it calls “the rarest and most dynamic member of the esteemed Continental family of Grand Tourers.” Inspired by the new Continental GT3 race car that stormed to victory at the second round of the Blancpain Endurance Series at Silverstone, the first UK race for Bentley for 84 years, it has unveiled the Continental GT3-R, blending proven track and road credentials. If you want one you had better hurry the production run is limited to just 300. All 300 examples of the Continental GT3-R will be hand-built in Crewe and finished in Bentley’s Motorsport division. Bentley engineers have developed a retuned version of Bentley’s raceproven, high performance 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 for this new two-seater GT.

BENTLEY GT3-R: If you want one, you had better hurry, as the production run is limited to just 300.

Developing 580 PS (572 bhp / 426 kW) and 700 Nm of torque, together with a 100 kilo weight reduction

and shorter gearing, the Continental GT3-R is the fastest-accelerating Bentley ever. Capable of reaching 60 mph from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.8 secs), the GT3R is a Grand Tourer with the performance of a racer. And that performance comes in the lap of luxury as you would expect from Bentley. It won’t be cheap, but just how much it will cost has not yet been revealed. Complementing the revised powertrain is a further development of Bentley’s renowned allwheel drive system, which now features torque vectoring for the first time. Together with modified Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and a chassis tune optimised for outright cornering ability, the Continental GT3 R is the

most dynamic, responsive and involving Bentley road car ever. Wolfgang Dürheimer, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, comments: “The experience of driving a Continental GT3-R is awe-inspiring, and takes the dynamic abilities of our Grand Tourer to new heights. We were inspired to create something extremely special for the road by the performance of our Continental GT3. “It is a celebration of the Bentley passion for building outstanding drivers’ cars. To be a true Bentley, the GT3-R had to be the most luxurious track-inspired Grand Tourer ever, and this car pushes our trademark combination of luxury and performance to a new level.” Bentley’s popular and widely acclaimed 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 engine, now race proven by the Continental GT3, has been fitted with precision-honed high-boost turbochargers and developed with new engine control software. This increased power is fed through Continental’s eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox, now with shorter output gearing to enhance acceleration, to Bentley’s renowned all-wheel drive system. For the first time for a Bentley, the drivetrain has the ability to control the torque at each of the rear wheels through the use of torque vectoring. Order books for the Continental GT3-R are open now, with deliveries to start late in 2014.

FUN CAR: The two seater has no roof whatsoever.

Ibiza Cupster is radically open…. IT is certainly an unusual look. Seat’s Ibiza Cupstar prototype captures the imagination with a design that is as emotional as it is dynamic according to the Volkswagen owned manufacturer. Seat Design has created a surprising reinterpretation for the Ibiza Cupster: While the body shell is largely the same as that of the series-production model Ibiza up to the shoulder line, everything above it is radically open. The two-seater fun car has no roof whatsoever; and even the classic front windscreen has given way to a low, wrap-around strip of glass. Nevertheless, the driver and codriver are well protected thanks to the seating position, which is 70 millimetres lower than in the series-production car. As the Cupster the Ibiza has completely new proportions - wide, low and even more powerful. The steering wheel is

clad with an especially sophisticated type of leather - pure aniline leather is coloured all the way through, without a layer of pigment, making it open-pored, very supple and wonderful to the touch. The one-off created and built by Seat Design is resplendent in ‘New Orange’ paintwork formulated specifically for it. The dark grey cover behind the classic doublebubble style seats looks almost like an island in this sea of bright orange. The interior is purist and based on the Ibiza race cars from the Ibiza Trophy run in several European countries. Minimalist instruments and black Alcantara upholstery for the cockpit, low-slung racing bucket seats make for a real racing feel. There is also no shortage of performance after all, the Cupster is based on the Ibiza Cupra.
