Soller in mourning GRIEVING neighbours have observed a minute’s silence to commemorate the latest victim of domestic violence in Spain. A large crowd took to the streets in Soller in remembrance of murder victim Maria Rosa Martinez Deya, 45. She was strangled by her husband with a rope. The man later died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound. “I feel very sorry for her daughters. What will happen to them? Maria Rosa was well-liked by everyone. A few days ago she told me she was having problems with her

husband. But I never imagined something like this could happen,” said the mayor of Fornalutx in an interview with the media. The municipalities of Soller, Deia and Fornalutx

declared a three-day official mourning period to condemn the brutal tragedy and raise awareness against the scourge of domestic violence. Some of the neighbours,

visibly affected, lit candles and cried in silence. The flags were flown at half-mast at the council and a feeling of sorrow and frustration permeated the air. “When my husband passed away a few years ago, she was working in the local government and helped me a great deal. She was a lovely woman,” said Dolores Carrillo, a friend of the victim. Maria Rosa Martinez is the second woman in the Balearic Islands this year to fall victim to domestic violence. Letters CUEVAS DE DRACH: Almost made it onto the list.

Caves not so wonderful...

MALLORCA’S Cuevas de Drach have missed out on being named one of the Seven Wonders of Spain. The voting started on May 28 and closed on June 8 and drew more than 82,000 votes from all corners of the country. The Gaztelugatxe islet on the coast of Biscay in the Basque Country; Somiedo (Asturias) and the Cabo de Gata natural park in the south-eastern corner of Spain obtained the largest amount of votes. They were closely followed by Las Medulas

(Leon), the Lagoons of Ruidera (Ciudad Real), Fuente De (Cantabria) and the As Catedrais beach (Lugo). Although the stunning and awe-inspiring Caves of Drach, located on the island of Mallorca also got an impressive number of votes, it was not quite enough for them to be considered. The participants in the voting process could choose from three tourist attractions and share their votes on social media with the hashtag #7Maravillas (#7Wonders).

Corpse found in cove A DEAD body has been found floating near sa Calobra. The unidentified male, who was in an advanced state of decomposition, was discovered by the captain of a cruise ship. After catching sight of the body, the captain alerted the Guardia Civil. The officers arrived at the scene immediately and examined the body. Unfortunately, they

were unable to ascertain its identity, since it had no identity card. However, the corpse may have actually been dragged by the current from Valencia to Mallorca, said police. Further investigation has allowed the Guardia Civil to discover that a man was reported missing several months ago in Valencia. He seems to have

accidentally fallen into the sea and his clothing and physical features may coincide with those of the body found in Mallorca. This is the hypothesis the Guardia Civil is currently working on. The officers have contacted the missing man’s acquaintances in Valencia to see if they can confirm if the dead body is the man in question or not.

TABERNAS BADLANDS: ‘Heavy drought’ area. IN 1994, the General Assembly of the United Nations designated June 17 as World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Desertification affects more than 110 countries, among them Spain and in particular Almeria where the Tabernas Desert, Europe’s only desert, is located. This day is set aside to make the general public aware of the problem and the necessity for international co-operation to fight the spread of desertification. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, commented at last year’s meeting: “It is difficult to avoid droughts but we can mitigate their effects. The price of being prepared is nothing compared with the price of aiding an emergency

drought area. So we must give priority to preparing and improving the world’s resilience to this problem.” Despite being a wonderful place to film a Western, the Tabernas Desert suffers its own problems as a ‘heavy drought’ area. The principal problem is that when it does rain in the desert it tends to be torrential and, as the ground has very little vegetation, the rain just erodes what little topsoil there is, instead of permeating down to the water table. This leads to the formation of ‘badlands’, which are particularly difficult to recover. In recent years, there have been worries of creeping desertification in other areas of Spain, particularly parts of Andalucia.

Mustafa M has also been ordered to pay €65,000 in compensation to each of the victim’s three children

and €50,000 to her widower. To impose the sentence, the judge took into consideration several aggravating factors, including their former relationship. Drug bust A DRUGS MULE has been detained at Palma airport by the Guardia Civil. The 26-year-old woman had just landed in Palma when she was arrested. examiner’s testimony, the victim bled to death as a result of a 15centimetre stab wound to her abdomen. After fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend, the murderer went to the police and admitted to what he had done. He killed his ex, cleaned the bathtub, mopped the floor and carried her dead body to her bed, covering it with blankets and towels. The court concluded that the attack had been ‘unexpected and accurate’. It was also determined that the man had acted out of jealousy, since he could not accept that she had got over him. The defence lawyers argued that the defendant was drunk when he killed her and not fully aware of what he was doing.

PORT ADRIANO: Scene of the accident.

Accident on the king’s old yacht

A WORKER has been badly injured after falling from the king’s former yacht, the Fortuna. The walkway he was standing on collapsed and he fell into the sea after hitting his head. The Fortuna, renamed as the Foners, was moored in Port Adriano when the man fell from the collapsed walkway and hit his head, needing assistance, from other workmen to get out of the water. His colleagues called the emergency services

and when they arrived they found that he had a sprained shoulder and bad bruising to his head as well as water in his lungs and a deep cut to his forehead. The emergency services had to use the boat’s crane to get the man to shore in a gurney, where there was an ambulance waiting for him. The king’s old yacht has been moored in Port Adriano for the last two months while it waits for someone to buy it.

Three fire engines, three brigades, three environmental agents, two firefighting experts and a Mallorca firefighter crew arrived on the scene to tackle the emergency. Two helicopters and three planes were also used to put out the flames. The forest fire broke out in a very inaccessible region, so there was no danger of any houses being affected by the flames. It was finally extinguished at around 8pm on Saturday.

City graffiti artist charged in Palma AN 18-YEAR-OLD in Palma has been formally charged for illicitly spraying graffiti on city property. In the wake of a painstaking investigation, the Local Police have charged a young man as the author of the graffiti discovered in Baluard del Princep and Torre d’en Pau. The officers were also able to confiscate a book containing all of his street ‘artworks.’ The damages to the Baluard have been especially severe, since the paint infiltrated the sandstone and its restoration could prove very difficult. Some of the stones will even have to be replaced, which could cost Palma City Council a lot of money. The Baluard del Princep and the Torre d’en Pau are listed as heritage of cultural interest and are protected by Spain’s law. Consequently, the graffiti artist may well be charged with a

Man raped stepsister A MAN has been arrested accused of raping his handicapped stepsister.

National Police officers detained the 18-year-old for sexually assaulting his

stepsister and getting her pregnant. The victim, 25, went with her mother to their local medical centre. A nurse performed a pregnancy test, which came out positive. The patient claimed she had not had sex with anyone, but that she was suspicious of her 18-yearold stepbrother. As it turns out, this is not the first time she was the victim of sexual abuse.

She was molested by her stepfather six or seven years ago. The man was later arrested, found guilty and is now serving his sentence in the Palma penitentiary. The victim was questioned by law enforcement officials. She claimed she is currently on medication which makes her drowsy, so she did not really know what went on at night. However, she acknowledged being aware of her brother sometimes entering her bedroom. The National Police questioned the young man as well. During his questioning, he broke down and admitted to having had intercourse with his handicapped stepsister. Nonetheless, he claimed he was under the influence of illegal drugs when it all happened. He is said to have been using marihuana and hashish for a long time. Since he was a minor when the sexual abuse took place, he was released with charges. The public prosecutor’s office for juveniles is currently looking into the matter.

Violence - ‘There is way out’ A CAMPAIGN against domestic violence has been launched across the Balearic Islands. It was presented by Janka Jurkiewicz, Head of the Coordination Unit Against Violence on Women, and Mercedes Juan, Vice-president of the Pharmacist Association of the Balearic Islands. Sponsored by the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, it aims at raising awareness among young people about spousal abuse. It also advocates for an

early detection system that allows society to nip domestic violence in the bud. Additionally, it calls for the responsible use of new technologies. During the presentation of the campaign, appropriately called “There is a way out of domestic violence,” Jurkiewicz said: “It is important for victims to speak out.” She also said that: “Once women are aware of the violence they are subjected to, they need to look for support in their friends and family

members. They should not feel alone.” Leaflets will be available in chemists across the Balearic Islands containing important information, including early warning signs and what to do in a case of domestic violence.

“It is critical to let women know that there are several ways they can make a complaint: the police, the toll-free numbers 016 and 900 20 20 10,” said Jurkiewicz. “There are resources available for them to get out of their situation”,

she added. The Representative’s Office for Domestic Violence thinks that pharmacists can make an important contribution to this awareness campaign since they are in direct contact with the general public.

Victim relives her invasion horror THE terror-stricken victim of a home invasion and attempted robbery has described in court her frightful ordeal. “My life has changed completely. I no longer feel safe at home. I am terrified. I cannot explain the horror I went through,” said the victim when she took the stand. On the night of January 5, 2013, three unknown men broke into the home of the woman in Cas Catala, Mallorca. The woman lived alone and she awoke to noises coming from her living room. It was pitch-dark and she did not dare to turn on the light. She stepped out of her bedroom and a man pinned her against the wall. “He put a pair of pruning shears to my neck and immobilised me,” said the woman. The first robber called two others on the phone. The three burglars combed the apartment for valuables,

while they threatened to kill the woman. “Shut up or I will kill you. Do not look at me,” yelled one of them. They tied a piece of cloth around her neck and threatened to strangle her if she didn’t tell them her credit card PIN. Before leaving, the men tied her up to make sure she wouldn’t move. “When they left, I stayed there listening for them, making sure they were gone.” She freed herself and alerted her neighbours. In court, the victim could not identify any of the defendants as the men who broke into her home. But she did remember hiring one of them some time ago to change her parquet. The defendants deny having anything to do with the robbery. Each one of the defendants could serve up to 11 years in prison if found guilty.

Unlikely heroes WHEN we think about heroes, what usually comes to mind is the Hollywoodinspired myth of a costume-wearing saviour possessing extraordinary powers and dedicated to protecting mankind. Superheroes are intrinsically linked to popular culture. Even though they have been around in comic books since the 1930’s, there’s no denying they have exploded onto our big screens and are now more popular than ever. However, in real life, heroes are not defined by their masks and capes or by their amazing speed or ability to fly. They are defined by their aweinspiring acts of kindness and courage, which can positively touch the lives of perfect strangers. Unfortunately, their good deeds often go unnoticed, since they are not as spectacular as melting a

Ex Barca boss suspect in tax case THE former president of FC Barcelona, Sandro Rosell, has been summoned to testify before Spain’s High Court tomorrow (Friday) as part of an investigation into alleged financial crimes regarding the Neymar signing. Judge Pablo Ruz handed

down the decision in a ruling which took into account a Tax Agency report stating that the club failed to make tax payments of €9 million between 2011 and 2013. Reportedly, there is also a Tax Agency document which outlines possible fraud of €2.6

million for the 2014 tax year. Also summoned by Judge Ruz are employees from the football club’s auditor, Deloitte, to appear as expert witnesses. The court has requested a number of documents, including those relating to the voluntary tax payment of €13.5

million made by FC Barcelona after a complaint of financial wrongdoing was lodged. The voluntary payment does not exempt FC Barcelona from the charge, as the money was paid after the judicial proceedings had already started.

Spain’s Tax Agency has accused Barcelona of committing tax fraud to the tune of €9 million in the signing of Brazilian player Neymar. The Catalan club had originally stated that the transfer had cost €57.1 million. However, selling club Santos said it had only received €17.1 million for the highly-rated player. Boris Becker saves villa at last minute TENNIS LEGEND Boris Becker has managed to save his holiday home on the Balearic Island of Mallorca at the last minute. He has had to pay up for the huge bill he had accrued with a local builder just as the property was about to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The enormous, 2,900 square metre, property was confiscated by the local Mallorca authorities as Becker had not paid a local builder the sum of €391,000 for various

works he did on the site including carpentry, plumbing jobs and even the surfacing of a basketball court. The three time winner of Wimbledon, currently training world number two tennis seed Novak Djokovic, was told that his home would be under the hammer for €7 million. Becker saved the nine

Government blames Santiago train driver for 2013 crash tragedy A REPORT commissioned by the Spanish Government into the Santiago de Compostela train crash has blamed the train driver for the tragedy. The expert Committee of Railway Accident Investigations (CIAF) report concluded that the July 24, 2013 crash -

which killed 79 people - was due to “excess speed resulting from the driving personnel’s failure to comply with speed limit regulations.” The CIAF, which answers to the Public Works Ministry, say the Alvia train, a hybrid model that can run on ordinary as well as

high-speed tracks, was going at around 190km/h at the time of the accident. The speed limit at that section of the track was 80km/h due to an upcoming bend. Cabin recordings revealed that the train driver was distracted by a phone call from the conductor, and failed to notice the new

President would fail at school CAMBRIDGE University Press (CUP) has released the results of a survey carried out on English teachers in Spain and can now reveal the vast majority of them think that the country’s president, Mariano Rajoy, would not even pass a school English test. Three out of four English teachers surveyed revealed that the president, who recently refused an offer for free lessons, would fail even a primary English exam. Ninety-two per cent of those surveyed thought that Spanish politicians in general were lacking

in language skills, while 88 per cent thought that they had the worst English among their peers in the EU. Ninety-four per cent said they felt embarrassed to hear them speak in the Queen’s tongue. Seventy-three per cent thought that the level of spoken English in the country was “poor” and that it would take Spain around 15 years to come up to the levels of other EU countries. CUP spokesperson, Julio Redondas, commented that Spain has a historical and cultural hangup about learning languages and

this would be hard to change. He went on to underscore the fact that things would have to change over the course of a generation and not in two days. On a more positive note, Redondas stated that Spaniards were now more aware of the need to learn languages and, despite the public’s fondness for criticising their public figures for not speaking it properly, he listed several language powerhouses in the country including the king and the soon-to-be king.

Despite the blame being put on driver Francisco José Garzón, who admitted to his mistake immediately following the crash, the report also makes recommendations to Adif and to railway operator Renfe. The report recommends the installation of new signs to warn about sudden speed changes, and mechPOOR: President Rajoy’s anisms to slow down trains language skills. if necessary.

Major crackdown on diesel fraud ACROSS Spain a major police operation is under way to stop a dieseltampering ring. The group contaminated diesel fuel in conjunction with many petrol stations, which then sold the substandard product to unsuspecting drivers. Some 50 suspects have been detained, with more than 100 arrests expected by the end of the operation. Police say thousands of drivers have used the adulterated fuel. Members of the crime gang transformed Type B and C Fuels (those used for farm machinery,

‘Let the people decide’ CATALAN leader Artur Mas has said the people in his region have the right to decide whether they want to break away from Spain or not. Catalan President Mas maintained that the planned vote on independence, scheduled for November 9, must go ahead - even though the central government in Madrid has vowed to block the referendum on constitutional grounds. Mas, 58, who has been the region’s leader since 2010, told Reuters that he is searching for a legal loophole to allow for a non-binding vote known as a ‘popular consultation’. Depending on the outcome, the vote could give Mas a mandate to ask the Spanish government for more power over a number of things including taxes, welfare spending, police, infrastructure and education.

fishing boats and heating) into Type A fuel (used by cars). Types B and C are given government tax breaks. As cheaper diesel is dyed red to distinguish it from the more expensive variety, the gang added chemicals to eliminate the colouring from the fuel and pass it off as Type A. Aside from economic fraud, these added substances also cause

damage to vehicles. Spain’s Guardia Civil launched the raid jointly with the Customs Surveillance Service. Those detained include businesspeople who work in the fuel industry, along with criminals involved in drug trafficking and other activities. Police sources estimate the fraud could be have been worth between €5 and €12 million a month.

A scapegoat? T

HE driver is to blame for the Santiago de Compostela train crash that left 79 people dead. So says the official report into the tragedy nearly a year on. It is hard to argue with that conclusion when one hears that the train was going at around 190kph when the speed limit was just 80kph. Revelations that the driver was distracted by a phone call from the guard at the crucial moment cannot exonerate him - the driver’s first responsibility is to the safety of his passengers. But pointing the finger of blame at the train’s driver, Francisco José Garzón Amo, who has been charged with 79 counts of homicide by professional recklessness, is not enough. Why, in a state of the art train on a modern railway system, was such an excessive speed permitted? In this day of computerised

driving aids, the technology exists to automatically prevent such accidents. Indeed much of Spain’s vaunted high-speed rail network has just such systems in place. But for some reason - the suspicion being to save money - the stretch of line which included this bend, acknowledged before the incident as highly dangerous, did not have them fitted. Such mechanisms were fitted soon after the accident in three places approaching the scene to make sure a similar accident could not happen again. As so often the sound of a stable door being slammed shut too late. The driver should not be left to face the music alone. Those responsible for not ensuring the safety of the passengers, and that means not just local managers, but also people at boardroom level, should also be forced to face their responsibilities in court.

bringing a 6.5 per cent reduction. Unemployment is traditionally reduced in May and June. The hotel and catering industry, agriculture and the construction sector take on workers for the summer season but last month’s was the third consecutive fall this year.

Tainted money to swell GDP THE proceeds of drugs money and vice are to be included in Spain’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) forecasts. The national statistics institute INE will begin taking these into account next October when it will also be using ESA-2010, Europe’s new accounting system, and a new population census, it revealed. So far INE has not given details of the economic impact of these hidden but important sectors on national statistics. The UK recently estimated that drugs and prostitution contributed £10 billion (€12.28 billion) to the country’s economy. The UK government has

also announced its intention of adding these proceeds to its GDP estimate after the summer, as will Italy. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, Estonia and Slovenia already do so. All other EU member states’ statistics bodies will substitute the ESA-95 method currently used for estimates with the ESA2010 system in the autumn. Nevertheless, the decision to include what the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat described as the “informal economy” in their GDPs was contemplated in the previous method. “Nor is this adaptation solely European, it is also global,” a Eurostat spokesman said.

May’s seasonally-adjusted unemployment figure of 24,604 was the greatest reduction since 1998, accumulating its 10th fall in as many months. A further 198,320 people were registered as Social Security contributors, a statistic that is generally regarded as the true gauge of job-creation.

Families owe less FAMILY debt fell once more in April and now stands at €771.6 billion. This is the lowest figure since 2006, according to Bank of Spain figures, confirming the diminishing level of indebtedness since the onset of the economic crisis. April’s figures were €2.72 billion lower than those for March and 5.2 per cent less than in April 2013.

The 0.35 per cent reduction on the statistics for March was produced by a 0.07 per cent fall in consumer loans for personal or household purposes, which fell to €166.26 billion. Mortgage loans also fell by 0.47 per cent to €602.29 billion but despite the reduction, these still account for 80 per cent of family debt.

Tax give and take from the Hacienda SPAIN’S tax-collecting agency AEAT will not pursue outstanding debts of less than €3. These sums are usually the balance owing on IRPF income tax returns and the cost of recovering them is greater than the cash eventually received, AEAT announced. Taxpayers with amounts like these still outstanding will not be pursued any further on strictly economic grounds, said a notice in the Official State Bulletin (BOE). This cannot be interpreted as a softening on the part of Hacienda, as the tax inspectors’ union IHE recently called for fiscal fraud to be declared a prison offence. They suggested raising the threshold for tax fraud beyond which it becomes a crime, from the current €120,000 to €600,000. In return penalties would become more severe.

MARKETING is the strategy of using one’s imagination to create awareness of your product or service. There is no limit to the ways by which you can achieve your ends. Marketing is not dull; it is fun and brings with it many side dishes as part of the package. Involved in the properties abroad industry, a member of staff, aspiring to a career in modelling, suggested I sponsor her. I owed her that much and besides, Clare was great eyecandy. During her campaign trails my business would benefit by association. We both did well. If I recall correctly, Clare made it to

events. The outlay was very reasonable. Having invested in a restaurant the owner was aware that with little passing trade and a reputation yet to be built he was obliged to splash out heavily on

marketing. The restaurateur’s spirits lifted when a friend suggested a way to get his restaurant off to a flying start at a fraction of the outlay. Purchasing silver embossed invitations the budding entrepreneur mailed them to a few score of the town’s hairdressers. Each invited the recipient and partner to a free meal, entertainment and bottle of wine. The evening went well. Those lucky enough to attend the soirée never stopped talking about the fabulous evening they experienced at his restaurant. The restaurateur’s outlay was very low. A London estate agent, on the day a client moved in, delivered a hamper, flowers and a bottle of wine. Customers spoke very well of him and so helped gain him an excellent word of mouth reputation. The only requirement is to exceed your customer’s expectations. Apart from excellent service a goodwill gesture can be a small unexpected gift given as a token of appreciation.

Industrial output 4year-high

INDUSTRIAL output in Spain was up 4.3 per cent year on year in April - the biggest growth in four years. That means that Spain has now posted six months in a row of rising industrial output according to the National Statistics Institute’s seasonally adjusted figures. It is a boost to the country which only emerged from five years of on/off recession in the middle of 2013. Since then there has been a small but sustained growth in GDP with manufacturing leading the way. One of the most important industries for exports is the car industries with manufacturers like Nissan, Volkswagen and Seat all increasing production in recent months.

FINANCE, BUSINESS & LEGAL

Franklin tells us like it was and is Loose change A look at finance for females

Jane Plunkett jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com

REFERRED to as one of the founding fathers of America, Benjamin Franklin was a smart man. Renowned as author, printer, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist and diplomat there wasn’t much this man didn’t set his mind to. And in the area of money matters he also imparted his wisdom. In fact, this man from humble beginnings dished out sound financial advice, which to this day is worth paying attention to. Here’s a quick look at how Franklin would have us

manage our money. “A penny saved is a penny earned” This is one of Benjamin Franklin’s most famous quotes and for good reason, as the quote was as relevant back then as it is now to ensure financial stability. Franklin knew the importance of saving and was able to put enough aside to retire pretty early. “Rather go to bed without dinner than to rise in debt” How many of us have fallen into the trap of living a lifestyle we can’t afford? Franklin recognised the dangers of this and warned people not to live beyond their means. Avoiding debt is essential to financial stability while overspending in order to live a certain lifestyle is just fools-play.

TRUTH: “A penny saved is a penny earned.” “Diligence is the mother of good luck” What Franklin was getting at here is that the majority of the time

Must we close our pool October to May? Q. I own an apartment in a community of 64 apartments in Torremolinos. We were told at You and the our AGM that our community pool could only Law in Spain be open from June to September, inclusive. We By David Searl were further told that should this law not be complied with, then the President and the Administrator could be subject to legal proceedings. This seems rather harsh. What is the law regarding the opening of swimming pools? B.G. (Costa del Sol) A. There is no law that requires community swimming pools to close from October to May. If your Community of Property Owners has voted at the AGM to open the swimming pool from June through September, it may do so. Your phrase, “we were told” disturbs me. You should have the right to cast your vote. Perhaps the committee decided on its own to use the pool only in the summer to save money. The Andalucian regulations on swimming pools of collective use has many strict provisions on health and safety standards for these pools, but closing down is not one of them. It is true a community pool must meet these standards and must register a responsible person who can be held legally liable if the rules are not complied with. If the pool is not properly fenced

and a child drowns, the responsible person can be held liable, for example.

financial success is not just random luck. He believes that a so-called ‘overnight success’ is most likely the result of

lots of factors - and most importantly years of hard work and diligence. “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest” “Invest in yourself” is what Franklin advises. By improving our own knowledge and skills we are able to make wiser choices and expect that more opportunites might arrive at our door. “Money never made a man happy yet, nor will it. The more a man has, the more he wants” Franklin advises us not to be blinded by a goal to generate wealth. He viewed money as a means to an end, not the end itself. The motto viewed money as a tool to help him do things that make him happy but it acknowledged that it doesn’t bring unconditional happiness just because you process it.

Vote-catchers THE EU questioned Spanish government moves to lower taxes before the 2015 elections. Instead VAT, environmental taxes and rates should be raised and lower-paid workers’ social contributions reduced, Brussels said.

Shares sold PEMEX, Mexico’s stateowned oil company, sold most of its Repsol stake after having been a shareholder in the Spanish company for more than 25 years. It raised approximately €2.2 billion.

Spain leading SPANISH companies helped European shares in their 8th week of gains last Friday. The European Central Bank eased monetary policy helping Spanish banks make gains. Spanish shares were up 0.4 per cent on average.

Finance world’s reaction to Spanish abdication THE markets barely reacted to the news that King Juan Carlos was handing over to his son, Felipe. The abdication was received with an interest that had no impact on share prices that day. The Ibex 35 - Spain’s equivalent of the UK’s FTSE 100 - finished with a 0.27 per cent increase, attaining this year’s high of 10,827 points. The bond yield hovered at around 150 basis points and that day, a Monday, finished at 147 compared with 149 the previous Friday. The abdication news was similarly absorbed without repercussions by the international stock, bonds, currency and commodity markets. Spain’s biggest financial names were equally unperturbed by the abdication but all had only praise for Spain’s transformation during Juan Carlos’s 39 years on the throne. Pablo Isla (Inditex chairman), Juan Rosell (president of Spain’s confederation of industry, CEOE, Alicia Alcocer Koplowitz (FCC) and Emilio Botin (Santander chairman) were amongst those who acknowledged the country’s debt to the monarch.

RELAXED: Markets barely reacted to the king’s announcement. “Don Juan Carlos is without any doubt the best king Spain has ever had,” said Florentino Perez, president of the ACS construction and services group as well as Real Madrid football club. “We should never forget that he stood up to the enemies of freedom.” Candido Mendez, secretary general of the UGT trade union also paid grudging tribute. “Over and above what has happened in recent years, his contribution to consolidating democracy is totally positive,” he declared.

Great care at the hands of health service I FEEL that I must put into words my praise for the San Pedro de Alcantara health centre. After I fell very badly onto my face, my husband took me to ‘Urgencias.’ In less than two minutes I was seen by a medic who cleaned and bandaged me, then gave me medication and a tetanus injection. I was seen by a doctor who gave me a thorough physical examination to make sure there was nothing broken or that I had sustained concussion. All in all, a fast and comforting experience that ended up with written instructions (in English) as to what I should and should not do. I wish I could say that in England I would have received such immediate attention. Many thanks to the Spanish Health service. Bravo! Desiree A V Bishop, (by email)

Out of tune WE had the misfortune of trying to attend a couple of events during the Tuna Festival and Contest in Mojacar. We went to see the musicians and singers perform at 9pm at the Parque Comercial as publicised in the local papers, on the Mojacar Town Hall website, posters and electronic screen in the Parque Comercial. We invited others who had never seen the Tunas and arrived early to get good seats. No Tunas showed up. Later we went with friends, again as announced in all the media, to see the parade of all the Tuna groups which starts in the village and normally ends near the roundabout by the Multi Purpose Building. No Tunas ever showed up. Although I have always loved watching the Tunas, I will never go to these events again. For me, this is a sad ending to what was a wonderful event. M Taylor (by email)

many people have about immigration, can anyone believe UKIP could make any appreciable difference to the number of people entering Britain? We would do better to accept that immigration is a fact of economics and will only cease if we become poor. Also, that no country in the world can ever go back to having a homogeneous population. postal deliveries. This has been happening for years. I presume he is talking about official letters, which is not Correos’ fault as UK government departments outsource their mail. We have received letters with different country stickers on them and some have taken up to six weeks to arrive. Also Royal Mail is not that brilliant. In fact I have asked family and friends to stop sending greetings cards as they always arrive after the event, which is so disappointing. On the other hand I send post from Spain to the UK which arrives within three days and sometimes two. I think Correos is brilliant. Has Mr Widdicombe rung to complain like we did? He won't be surprised by their mail answer. Margaret Van Enk, Pedreguer (Alicante)

I usually work early shifts and must get up at 4 or 5am and need to sleep in the afternoon when I come home. I advised the boys’ parents, leaving letters in the post boxes along the entire Pasaje de San Juan in Arroyo de la Miel but that did not help at all. The Centro Cultural Manuel Estepa, with a big place for kids to play ball, is just a three-minute walk from here. I have said to the kids many times that they cannot play ball

False alarms FOR once, I find myself agreeing a lot with Leapy Lee! Especially when he points out that UKIP have no policies apart from their views on Europe and they will in any case be unable to carry them out. I also agree that our mainstream parties should have taken UKIP more seriously but it is true that because Leapy and others constantly warned that UKIP were winning, a lot of people voted for them just because of that. Where those parties failed was not to come out fighting and explain in clear language just why the issues that UKIP benefited from are not real issues at all. Hardly anyone in the UK has personally suffered any damage whatever because Brussels is the way it is. Most people agree that Brussels could do a lot better, but the effects are really negligible. As for the real worries that so

I WAS greatly dismayed when I read the ‘advertising feature’ concerning an Alfaz councillor. I personally know the lady and worked with her when we both taught in the same school. You could not meet a kinder, more honest, hardworking person. She was greatly loved and highly respected by pupils, parents and colleagues alike. As a councillor, she is also just as highly respected. The incident mentioned occurred nine years ago, before this lady entered politics! She had no part in what happened but because it concerned a member of her family, she has bravely suffered the consequences. It seems obvious that the people who paid for this ‘advertising feature’ deliberately waited to use this information in a smear campaign in the week before the European elections. Being a weekly paper they also made sure that there was no time for redress. I can only hope that your readers were wise enough to ignore these filthy tactics used by people who have no qualms in hitting a person when they are down. Shame on them! MAGINE the predicament. There you are peddling around the Mallorquin countryside, taking in the clear blue skies, the ancient windmills and the picturesque countryside. Then you take one wrong turn and end up in the triangle of hell: A shameful local secret, otherwise known as Son Banya. Son Banya is a triangular shantytown a mere five kilometres away from the luxurious shops and restaurants of Palma and a stone’s throw from the Mercapalma wholesale market. Son Banya offers shopping of a different kind - it is a drugs supermarket; and it is not Ibuprofen that is on offer. According to reporters braver than myself who have entered the area, the welcome is far from

SON BANYA: A shameful secret. friendly with guns recommending a swift exit. In comparison, a night out in Magaluf is like a trip to Disneyland. While the existence of this relatively tiny area of Mallorca has been successfully shielded from tourists and expats, with even its location removed from many maps, it is remarkably significant, despite hosting a mere 100 families. The government has closed the local school in an attempt to

integrate the children into the wider community, and after the tragic disappearance of 15-year old Malén Zoe Ortiz Rodriquez near Magaluf in December 2013, Son Banya has been searched on a number of occasions, albeit without success. ‘La Paca’ as the original matriarch of the village is known as, now resides under lock and key. Francisca Cortés Picazo, her real name, is succeeded by

family members upholding the ‘spirit’ of the area, but according to one of her sons, she is due for parole next year. Next month some 23 of the shacklike buildings are scheduled to be destroyed by court order, in an attempt to finally eradicate the power of Son Banya. You might wonder why the removal of such a small area, accessed by a single road, has taken so long and proven so difficult. La Paca’s son recently gave some insight into the reason in an interview, claiming that the business would otherwise disperse and be more difficult to track. Others suggest the zone’s powers stretch further up the social hierarchy than officials would care to admit. Looking at internet chat rooms, some die-hard tourists are already searching out the zone as a last resort if they are unable to locate dealers in the streets. Judging by reports from people who have strayed into Son Banya by mistake or on purpose, I would advise avoiding this at any cost - it is a place where angels and police alike fear to tread.

OPINION & COMMENT

Who should be the next King? With King Juan Carlos of Spain becoming the third European monarch to abdicate in just over a year, we asked who should take over the throne if Queen Elizabeth stepped down. Should it be Charles or should a generation be skipped straight to William, or maybe Princess Anne should take the role?

V

STREET TALK

AL HARRIS, 67, a retiree from Turre, Almeria, was out shopping in Albox with her friend Jenny Buckland. Val said: “I think system and give it to Charles, but the Princess Anne would be a good choice Queen isn’t going anywhere.” because she works hard without Peter signed off with a joke about recognition. My second choice would be the King of Spain: “Another Juan bites Wills.” Neither Val nor Jenny were keen the dust.” on Charles taking over the throne. Jacqui Braithwaite, a waitress Peter Riley, a 50-year-old from Newcastle, visiting her holiday consultant on holiday home in La Marina, Alicante, believes from Whitchurch, that Prince William Shropshire should be next believes in on the throne Jenny is on upholding the should the the left and tradition. Peter Queen Val on the said: “I think we abdicate: “He should stick would be the right. with the people’s choice I think.”

JACQUI: Would like to see William take over. Husband Ken agrees, he wouldn’t want to see Charles take over: “I think he has not done himself any favours with public opinion over the years.” Bronwyn Dean, a dental

nurse from Wales, also on holiday on the Costa Blanca, doesn’t think it would ever be an issue: “I think the Queen will remain on the throne until the day she dies and they will then just follow tradition and Charles will take over. I think if she ever had any intention to step aside she would have done it by now.” Agreeing was Angela Simpson, 58, from Ipswich on holiday in Velez-Malaga. “The Queen will never abdicate. In the Royal family it has a real stigma - the Queen’s mother particularly felt Edward VIII betrayed the country when he abdicated to marry Wallis Simpson. Ironic really as if he had not done so Elizabeth would never have been Queen. “Whatever happens, I do not see how they could skip Charles for king as he is the eldest child, not just son, although I do think Anne would make a good Queen.”

SPANISH Formula 1 racing star, Fernando Alonso, has turned down the chance to meet Canadian singer and heart-throb Justin Bieber. In a move that would outrage millions of teenage girls worldwide he snubbed the Canadian pop singer saying that he was “too busy” preparing for the Monaco Grand Prix to meet him. While the singer has more than 50 million fans worldwide, on social networks, and even celebrities, including actor Ryan Gosling and TV personality Kim Kardashian, are desperate to meet him. Alonso is evidently not a fan as he avoided the star when they were both in Monaco. Alonso came fourth in the race and it wasn’t all bad for Bieber either as he got to take a selfie with Formula 1 president Bernie Ecclestone.

Switzerland Pledges To End Banking Secrecy Switzerland’s centuries’ old tradition of banking secrecy is coming to an end. It has pledged to collect tax related information from its financial institutions and automatically share the data with other governments each year. Switzerland is the world’s biggest offshore centre, with $2 trillion in assets. Its prized banking secrecy has been slowly eroded under international pressure to increase tax transparency, particularly since the global financial crisis had governments looking for ways to increase tax revenue. It has now taken a decisive step, and joined with other Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in committing to automatic exchange of information between jurisdictions. This was a historic move for Switzerland. Within a couple of years it will start to automatically hand over details of bank accounts to other countries. The Financial Times described it as

By Peter Worthington, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks “one of most significant breakthroughs in the global crackdown on tax evasion”. Swiss Economics minister, Johann Schneider-Ammann, acknowledged that the deal would end “old style” banking secrecy. With Singapore also signing up, OECD tax director, Pascal SaintAmans, told a press conference: “It’s clearly the end of banking secrecy abused for tax purposes… It

means the governments can really assess the tax owed by people who thought they could hide in other jurisdictions.” Governments across Europe are expecting billions of Euros to be repatriated, as the owners realise they cannot hide the funds offshore any more. The Declaration on Automatic Exchange of Information in Tax Matters was signed at the OECD’s annual ministerial council meeting in Paris in May. It commits signatories to implement the new single global standard on automatic exchange of information. Participating jurisdictions will obtain all client information on bank accounts, and the beneficial ownership of companies and legal structures such as trusts, from their financial institutions. The data will be automatically shared with other governments each year - so not only in cases where tax evasion is suspected. Information includes taxpayers’ bank balances, interest

income, dividends and sales proceeds. According to the OECD, more than 60 countries and jurisdictions have now committed to the early adoption of the global standard. Additional countries are expected to join over the coming months. This single global standard for the automatic exchange of tax information was developed by the OECD and endorsed by the G20 in February. Those countries which have pledged to be early adopters will start to collect data from 31st December 2015. They have set a deadline of September 2017 for the first reporting of investors’ tax details to their home governments. OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría commented: “The commitment by so many countries to implement the new global standard, and to do so quickly, is another major step towards ensuring that tax cheats have nowhere left to hide”. On signing the Declaration, the Swiss government said that it

highlighted its commitment to tackling tax evasion and fraud. This is a public commitment from Switzerland, though it may need to be approved by parliament. The Federal Council has said that it will only agree to tax transparency standards which have a truly global nature and that reciprocity in the exchange of tax data must be guaranteed. Swiss banking secrecy once looked like it was set in stone, but those days are well and truly over. It is time for those who use offshore banks in places like Switzerland to review why they do so and consider if there are more tax efficient places for their funds that better suit their needs. It is important to only ever use tax planning arrangements that are fully compliant here in Spain and you should seek professional advice. A weak and indecisive president T LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

of ‘bringing our boys/girls back home’, he actually managed to withdraw the whole American army from Afghanistan, thereby handing outright victory to the Taliban; how they must have all loved him for that! This latest incident is so blatant, it borders on an intelligence-insulting exercise which is almost frightening in its pure arrogance. In exchange for one American serviceman, a man whose service record is appearing more and more dubious, and who could in fact turn out to be an actual deserter, he hands over FIVE of the Taliban’s top military leaders! When publicly challenged over the decision, in an endeavour to appear a zealous patriotic president (which of course should be

unquestionable) he weakly waffles in his defence that, ‘whatever it takes, we will bring every one of our troops home’. I’d like to have been a mosquito on the wall during those ‘negotiations’. One for one, perhaps. Even two for one would have been just about acceptable. But five!? No, sorry, Mr President, I think we should all be extremely worried about your motives and deeply suspicious of your actual position in these unsettling times. Well, I don’t often use the blurb for personal subjects, but I have just returned from a weekend in Holland. (I know, I know!) where I did a quick Tele and sang at the birthday party of an old and dear friend of mine. How wonderful it was to just wallow in the world of millionaires, however briefly. The grounds and magnificent rooms of a country mansion, and three bands. A half dozen top performers,

enough Champagne to refloat the Titanic and beluga in quantities to relieve a thousand virgin sturgeons of their egg production. Many thanks to Bert and Malis Maas. It was a real blast. Many happy returns. Have a good week. Try and do a good turn or two, and, whatever ya

HOSE of you who peruse this blurb on a regular basis will know I have very little time for Barack Obama. I think the man is weak, indecisive and elected for all the wrong reasons. I also maintain his actions regarding the problems of radical Islam are often questionable, to say the least. In fact, I consider some of his rhetoric and decisions in that direction often give rise to suspicions as to where his true loyalties actually lie. The speech some time ago, for example, wherein he declared that Muslims had always had a close and productive association with the USA. Later, of course, this was revealed as a ludicrous statement, with not one predominant example being discovered anywhere in American history. The loss of our unsung hero and staunch supporter of the island Vicki Mcleod

Family Matters IN the early hours of Monday morning a very special person passed away. David Hammond (who some of you may have known as ‘Mr Kate Mentink’) lost his long battle with cancer. David was one in a million: he was a successful businessman, who also supported his wife in every single thing that she did. If Kate was at an event representing Europeos Por Espana or in her official capacity as a politician then you could expect David to also be there in the background taking photos and cracking jokes. He didn’t ever seem to mind that Kate was more in the ‘limelight’ than him, and I know he was incredibly and fiercely proud of her and all of her achievements. Whenever I saw them together they were always so respectful and loving towards each other, and that I think is a sign of a really fantastic marriage.

ONE IN A MILLION: David Hammond with his wife Kate. One of the things I really came to enjoy about David was his dry humour; he was great fun to be around, you also knew pretty quickly if you were in his good books or not. If you were ever stuck for a conversation subject, which to be honest was rare, you could turn to the topic of his beloved motorbikes and specifically motorsport, as David was always up for a

chat about Jorge Lorenzo. I first met David back in the days of Luna Radio when we were broadcasting out of ‘Luna Radio Towers’ (actually a garage in El Toro) as he was great mates with fellow Scouser and owner of Luna, Laura Penn. I soon came to realise that David had the gift of being able to say exactly what he felt, and be very honest

and direct without ever offending you. David hated frauds and people who didn’t keep their word and I think he valued truthfulness and integrity very highly. I will always appreciate the guidance and help he gave to me about business as I developed in what I was doing. I last saw David at the premiere for the 2014 Son Amar show High Energy. He and Kate were attending that evening and I knew they were in the process of preparing to return to hospital after being told that his illness had returned. That night he insisted that she wear a brightly coloured ‘Desigual’ dress even though it was a black tie and ball gown evening, and because she loved him, and he wanted to see her wearing a particular dress, she did. Kate has lost her soul mate and best friend, and we have lost an unsung hero for Mallorca, a staunch supporter of the island, a defender of the people and a great mate to many. David, I hope they have Kawasakis in heaven. David’s funeral service will be on Friday June 13 at 6pm at Calviá Church. www.familymattersmallorca.com

FOOD allergies can cause dermatological discomfort for animals. It has been estimated that at least 1 per cent of all skin problems in cats and dogs are caused by dietary allergies. These can be triggered in minutes, hours or days. Sensitivity to an allergy caused by a protein can often be lifelong. Some dogs can digest the lactose in cow’s milk while the undigested lactose quickly produces an upset stomach in others. This is not a true allergy but demonstrates how sensitive to certain food pets can be. Stop the

milk and your pet’s life will look up immediately. Most dogs react in some way to incorrect feeding and, apart from allergic reactions, flatulence and inconsistent stool quality and large, smelly motions can result. If the balance of the

food is incorrect hyperactivity or, indeed, low activity can be the consequence. Protein used up for energy can produce a loss of coat and skin vitality. Many owners give far too many vitamins; a well-balanced diet should not have to be supplemented. Scratching and licking could be an indication of an allergic reaction to food, and the eating of grass, twigs and roots sometimes is an indication that the food is not being digested properly. The destruction of fibre-based material could be another sign that there is a craving for fibre to help the digestive process in some way. It’s such a dog’s life at the world’s first canine hotel A DOG owners nightmare - what to do with your four legged friend when you want to go on holiday? One Spanish resort, The Resort Canino Can Jane in the town of Roca del Valles, may have the answer - take them with you. The five-star resort, just 30 minutes outside Barcelona, has been designed with dogs in mind; it even has a specially built swimming pool for dogs of all shapes and sizes. The aqua park includes a water slide, as well as extra tough inflatables for playtimes. Federico Cano, manager of the resort said he had seen a resort that allowed dogs to swim with their owners and wanted to recreate the idea, but going one step further by building a hotel just for dogs: “I don’t see why dogs should not be allowed to enjoy a swim when the weather gets hot just like people - especially here in Spain where it gets really hot. “I designed it so that it was a little bit like a beach with a gradual slope which is exactly what dogs appreciate and I can guarantee a great

Take the dog to the resort for an hour and I can guarantee that it will sleep for the next two days.”

The resort, with staff having over 20 years experience in dog training, has a training school, and charges from €15 entry for adults and dogs. Pet owners are allowed to swim with their dogs. The pool is 1,000msquare and 60cm deep and water games are arranged throughout the day. So everybody is happy. www.canjane.com or 938 422 523.

Negative interest rate not sufficient to depress euro Commentary by Moneycorp

EUR After all the ballyhoo preceding the European Central Bank’s policy announcement on Thursday, the event itself fell a bit flat, at least as far as the FX market was concerned. A fractionally negative interest rate on commercial banks’ deposits and subsidies on their loans to small businesses were not seen as sufficiently mould-breaking to depress the euro. It was unchanged on the week against sterling and half a cent higher against the US dollar.

USD Investors could not make much of the week’s US economic data and there was no new word from the Federal Reserve about monetary policy. Such data as did appear told a fairly positive story about the US economy, with a jump in factory orders and upbeat reports from services sector firms. But it was not enough to stimulate dollar buying. It was down on the week by half a cent against the euro and by three quarters of a cent against sterling.

902887243 mallorca@moneycorp.com CAD The Loonie started the month badly. Figures at the very end of May showed Canada’s economy expanding by 0.3 per cent in the first quarter, with data to follow was less helpful. It showed Canada’s balance of trade slipping back into deficit and corporate activity turning lower. It was downwards for the Canadian dollar, which lost three quarters of a cent to the USD and two and a quarter cents to sterling.

AUD The Australian dollar started the week badly but later recovered most of the lost ground. Disappointing data for building permits and retail sales were offset by an improvement in the health of manufacturing and services sector firms. The Aussie received particular help from news that Australia’s economy expanded by 1.1 per cent in the first quarter. But that was only enough to keep it steady on the week against the US dollar: against sterling it was down by two thirds of a cent. NZD An almost complete lack of New Zealand economic data left the Kiwi with nothing to say for itself and it was left to drift along with the other commodityrelated currencies. They all had losing weeks against sterling and the US dollar. The NZ dollar was down by a cent and a third against the pound and by quarter of a cent against the US dollar.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) This should be a great time for your finances. Any glitch is likely to be because you have overspent. Even if things still need close attention, you can win if you concentrate. A bit of plotting and planning can work wonders at the moment.

Someone who appears to be telling a lie may simply have either misunderstood or have the wrong information. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) This is a time to consider finances and keep your options open. Someone who tries to get a fast decision out of you by pushing you into a corner is doing you no favours. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Keep things simple. Getting involved in other people's problems is not for you at the moment. It may be necessary to delay a decision to give yourself time to think. Could you manage a few days away somewhere? Maybe you could stay with a friend or relative.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Look at the long-term picture when considering money matters. What seems like a good deal now may not be so a few years down the line.

Sudoku

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Although things are going pretty well, there are some things that could be just a little better organised. The time and money that this saves could be small, but it's the ongoing positive attitude that counts. There have been times recently when you have wondered if your progress on a certain matter would ever start up again.

Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3X3 box contains the digits 1-9. There’s no maths involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) It is better if you don't get involved in any high profile, high risk business deals. Success is definitely not assured. This is a time for financial consolidation. Count your pennies and see the pounds collecting in the future. On a cold winter’s night it can give a pleasant glow to realise that your action during the summer is keeping you warm.

SLEEPING PATTERNS: Related to activity and attitude towards exercise.

Less exercise for night owls PEOPLE who wake up later are less likely to take regular exercise. A new report suggests that night owls are more sedentary and struggle to keep to an exercise regime. The report by the Feinberg School of Medicine at North-

western University in Chicago (USA) found that sleeping patterns and timing are related to activity patterns and attitude towards exercise. The study group comprised 123 healthy adults with a selfreported sleep duration

of at least 6.5 hours. Their sleeping patterns

and physical activities were then monitored.

Bacterial beauty products please WE are all told to dislike bacteria. They cause diseases, they do not respond to antibiotics, and they grow everywhere. However, we may end up loving what they can do for our skin. The increasing popularity in use of probiotics has helped with the image of bacterial species. Large cosmetic companies such as Estée Lauder and LÓréal have already manufactured cosmetic products that contain bacterial extracts. Bacteria are all the rage at the moment so making a product that has live bacteria is taking it one step further. A biotechnology company in Cambridge,

AOBiome, has developed a living bacterial skin tonic. The tonic contains billions of Nitrosomonas eutropha, an ammoniaoxidizing bacteria (AOB). These bacteria that are normally found in untreated water could eliminate the need to ever have a shower again. N. eutropha metabolises the ammonia in our sweat and converts it into nitric oxide and nitrite. Nitric oxide can regulate sweat production, odour, and inflammation promoting the healing of wounds by cellular regeneration. The bacteria can act as a built in cleanser and eradicate the need to use soaps of other cleansing products.

Enjoy the best of both worlds; live in Spain, and provide care in England M

ANY British expatriates living in Spain find it hard to be able to financially support themselves and build a future due to the local economic climate. The Good Care Group knows that many expats living in Spain have either a professional background in care or have cared for a loved one. This has proved successful for many carers in the home care market. The Good Care Group are passionate about providing the highest quality home care with innovation and professionalism that surpasses their competitors. Gardening Corner

Drought may be set to continue

By Dick Handscombe Spain’s best known expat gardening author about to start his 26th winter cut back.

W

E, like many gardeners on the Costas, have still had no significant rain, just a few drops several times, and we are now in June. So unless my experience of 1989 recycles, when it rained for 10 days almost non stop, one has to prepare for a hot dry summer and take sensible steps to still achieve a beautiful and productive garden, if not already taken. Some important areas for action in new gardens are as follows.

PRODUCTIVE: Achieve a beautiful garden for the summer.

• Improve your soils before planting anything. • Only plant drought resistant plants.

• Coach plants to develop deep root structures. • Mulch, mulch and mulch.

• Soften the microclimate of the garden, especially by establishing high hedges, internal hedges and trees for shade. • Establish ways of collecting, storing and distributing rain water. • Don’t attempt to plant up the entire garden. Have a network of paths and large terraces. • To ease your task of stopping plants from drying out buy and use TerraCottem soil improvement gel.

You can find out all you need to know about this helpful product, which is gradually finding its way around the world, on www.terra cottem.com. Since this year’s drought is becoming the severest for a century, in some areas I have spent many hours in recent weeks correcting, updating and extending my leaflet ‘Making waterless gardens a practical reality worldwide’ to create a 90 page practical book entitled ‘How to save water in your garden - A practical guide to waterwise Mediterranean style gardening’. This is now available from Amazon Books and gradually over the months will become available from other internet bookshops. The book discusses, amongst other issues, why one needs to take saving water seriously, 300 actions to be taken and provides a list of 250 plants that are, or can be persuaded to become drought resistant. Because of the need to watch the garden to ensure that plants do not suddenly

suffer because the water table has gone too deep for their roots, I have not made my normal spring carp fishing trip up to the River Ebro. But that is not the only reason. They have had a lot of rain inland in the north and the river is, like last year, often over the banks. However, my regular fishing partner has caught a few 50lb carp. But maybe my young turkey will break last year’s 40lb personal record and make 50lbs. By the way if you do have a compost heap, give it a turn over and dampen each layer as you do so, as dry heaps will not produce good compost. There are long chapters about good compost making under Mediterranean climate conditions in our books ‘Your garden in Spain, Growing healthy fruit in Spain and Growing healthy vegetables in Spain.’

How to eat five fruits and veg MOST PEOPLE would eat more fruits and vegetables if they prep them in a reasonable manner that didn’t take half a day. Here are some ingenious ways to make the process easier. Mandarin oranges - peeling them can give you sticky fingers but if you use a paring knife to slice off each end then cut a slit in the peel and roll the whole thing out you’ll be surprised how easy it can be! Beetroots. Eaten raw in a salad or just as a snack - slice them thinly with a knife and just season for a great twist to a boring salad. Pomegranates. Anyone who has cut one of these fruits will know that it can be extremely messy. We suggest cutting a cone out of the top

EASY PREPARATION: Would encourage people to eat more. of the fruit with a paring knife, then slice a thin sliver off the opposite end and lightly score each of the ridges that run from top to bottom and just pull the whole thing apart. Simple!

Architecture for a better life THE international jury of the Ninth Architecture and Urbanism Biennial (BIAU) has awarded prizes to Venezuelan architect Fruto Vivas, 30 architectural projects, three publications, two research projects and a video from the Videourbana competition. It is seen as an acknowledgment of architecture which aims at improving the quality of life of all citizens. The awards celebrate the work put into research, teaching and creation in Latin America, Spain and Portugal. The jury met in Madrid and made the selection from among 182 already

ARCHITECTURAL AIM: To improve the quality of life of all citizens. pre-selected proposals, out of the 1,000 that had originally been submitted. The jury emphasised “the high level of quality of the works” and highlighted “the

enormous creative vigour of Latin American architecture.” The 30 architectural projects included schools, social housing, a hospital,

an auditorium and a building restoration project, from countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Colombia, among others. In the publications

category, the jury selected the book Talca (Chile), the magazine Plot (Argentina) and the mobile phone application Scalae (Spain). In the research projects category, the jury awarded prizes to Prisma (Mexico) and ‘Aproximación desde la Arquitectura’ (Ecuador). The Videourbana jury, an urban video competition, decided to award the prize to the Chilean Video ‘El ultimo arenero.’ Furthermore, the Biennial jury unanimously agreed to give the Latin American award to Fruto Vivas (Venezuela, 1928) for his

laudable 60-year career path in architecture, both as a creator and a teacher. Francisco Burgos and Gines Garrido, coordinators of the BIAU said: “Latin America covers a huge and extraordinarily diverse territory, home to 600 million people. “If the architecture and the cities provide us with an eloquent portrait of the cultural richness, weaknesses and energies of these societies, then the works selected by the jury help us understand the current state of Latin American societies.”

New optimism in the real estate sector contrary to opinion of the economists CONTRARY to opinions of the most pessimistic economists, Arcano, a leading firm in investment banking, has said that the readjustment of the real estate and construction sector will come to an end this year, thanks to the liquidity seen in the whole Spanish economy. According to Ignacio De La Torre, an associate with Arcano, the trend indicates the housing prices are falling. Moreover, the

number of houses being built and bought has stabilised. While 700,000 houses were built in 2006 in the midst of the housing bubble, that number has decreased to 32,000 units. The liquidity, the fall of prices and the increase of foreign investment allow De La Torre to predict that 250,000 new houses will be built, which in turn will create 500,000 new jobs and increase GDP by three points. Furthermore, the

labour market also seems to be growing. Unemployment in the construction sector decreased by 24,194 (-3.92 per cent). Recovery of the real estate sector, along with general improvement of the labour market, will allow consumption to grow. This will also be supported by improvements in investment and financing, which have allowed the Spanish banking system to have more liquidity and solvency.

HOUSING MARKET: Prices going down for second hand homes.

The price of second-hand housing down 0.7 per cent ACCORDING to realestate website Fotocasa, the average price of second-hand housing in

Castilla and Leon decreased by 0.7 per cent in May, which not only means its value is around

€1,509 per square metre, but also that it is actually 11.2 per cent lower than the Spanish average

Time is ripe to buy a house BETWEEN May 29 and June 1, la Feria de Madrid was host to the 16th edition of the Madrid International Real Estate Exhibition (SIMA). This time around, the SIMA seems to have been held in a much more favourable context for Spain’s real estate sector. In fact, Eloy Bohua, director of the event, said: “the time seems to be ripe to buy a house.”

He also said that the SIMA took place in a different context, as compared to last year’s, thanks to the real estate indicators of the past few months, “which are well on the way to recovery.” Bohua said SIMA had “very interesting” things to offer, such as apartments on the coast for less than €50,000, or in Madrid for around €100,000.

(€1,699 per square metre). According to a report published by Europa Press, housing in Castilla and Leon is not as expensive as in Madrid, Catalonia and the Basque Country. The report also goes on to say housing prices in Castilla and Leon hit their historical maximum in May 2007, when they were roughly €2,295 per square metre. Since then, they have accumulated a 34.3 per cent drop.

New car sales are on the increase

NEW car registrations in Spain were up 16.9 per cent year on year to 82,480 in May. That was the best May figure since 2010, according to manufacturer and car sales associations. During the first five months of the year sales reached 364,784 units, up from 313,588 in the same period in 2013. The continuing success of the Plan Pive, where €2,000 is given against the price of a new car when scrapping one more than 10-years-old is being credited for the turnround in the car sales market. That is set to continue with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announcing on Saturday an extension to the scheme. The increase in sales is being driven by the private owner market, which accounted for 42,140 units in May, up 27.7 per cent. Car rental businesses bought 22,537 units, up 3 per cent on the same month in 1013.

ZEOD RC: Featuring thousands of parts and brand new technology.

Take a look at the Nissan ZEOD RC

IT features thousands of parts, brand new technology, has taken countless hours of design, engineering, construction and testing and now Nissan has revealed what is under the skin of the revolutionary electric powered prototype car the ZEOD RC. With every single component on the car down to the smallest nut and bolt modelled in computer aided design (CAD) technology, Nissan has released a unique image showcasing the inner workings of the car. The Nissan ZEOD RC will fill Garage 56 at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours - an additional entry reserved for new automotive tech-

nology never previously seen on track. The car aims to complete the first allelectric lap of the famous 8.5-mile circuit - running in virtual silence down the Mulsanne straight. In addition to revealing the unique ZEOD ‘components’ image, Nissan has also revealed video from the recent FIA crash test that every Le Mans prototype has to pass prior to competing. “Our philosophy at Nissan is to let fans get a behind-the-scenes look as to what it takes to develop the unique technology in the Nissan ZEOD RC,” said Darren Cox, Global Head of Brand, Marketing and Sales, NISMO.

Agreement good for both sides THE QUIRON hospital Palmaplanas and the Royal Nautical Club of Palma (RCNP) have renewed their collaborative agreement. They marked the

renewal with an exchange of lifejackets which will be worn by the sailors and monitors of the RCNP. The ceremony was presided over by Javier Sanz, president of the RCNP, and Sergio Camacho, director of the Quiron Palmaplanas. The new agreement is wider ranging than the old one and the Quiron Palmaplanas will now give first aid and CPR courses to the staff of the RCNP as well as informative talks directed at the members and students belonging to the sports schools. Until now the only involvement of the Quiron Palmaplanas was to provide medical

relationship with the hospital was “very satisfactory” for the RCNP

and, due to the fruitful relationship of last year they had both decided to renew the agreement and look for new synergies. He went on to underscore the fact that the courses to be given by the Quiron Palmaplanas, including first aid, would be very useful to both the members of the club and the students at the school. The Quiron hospital Palmaplanas will continue to attend and provide medical service to the main regattas held at the club including the Mapfre Copa del Rey, Gaastra PalmaVela and the Trofeo Ciutat de Palma.

A race around Mallorca without stopping

MORE than a dozen boats will take part in the Vuelta a Mallorca A3 (round Mallorca). The race will start at 12 midday on June 13 and there are already more

than a dozen boats registered. The rules are the same as last year; there must be three crew members and the craft must complete the full 150 nautical miles

without stopping. The direction the race will take will be decided on the morning of the race to take into account the meteorological conditions prevalent that day.

Mallorca’s best guide to local sport

By Lynda Demangeat ON a very hot and sunny afternoon teams from Agora Portals, Ibiza RC, RC Ponent and hosts El Toro RC took part in the finals of the Baleares Schools Sevens competition for the U14 and U16 teams.
