A rise in malaria MALARIA cases have quadrupled since 2010 in the Almeria area. The El Poniente hospital gets 7 per cent of all Spanish cases with more than 40 patients in the last year. The best treatment is to take precautions before travelling. Trips to tropical and sub-tropical countries, principally in Africa, by immigrants are thought to be the main cause of this worrying rise in the disease. Malaria is caused by a parasite, Plasmodium, which is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Chief consultant for these cases, Joaquin Salas Salvador points out that the best way to avoid malaria is to take precautions before leaving. He goes on to comment that it is not only the immigrants that bring it back but also attributes it to business trips made by local entrepreneurs and army exercises which don’t always protect themselves.

Demolition threat to seafront homes lifted THOUSANDS of home owners including many expatriates - are breathing a sigh of relief after their seafront homes had a cloud of uncertainty lifted from them. Owners will be allowed to bequeath or sell homes and businesses that infringe Spain’s previous Coastal Law. The law was announced last year and the text has now been made public. New regulations annul a clause in the 1988 law warning that buildings and businesses on the 100-metre strip measured from the high tide mark would be demolished in 2018. Under the new law the Environment Ministry confirmed that concessions are safe for another 75 years and authorisations for four more years. Thanks to the new law the

right to remain in these properties is now transferrable to

third parties as a legacy or through a sale, with the proviso

that Environment Ministry authorisation is obtained first. The ministry also has the right to widen the state-owned strip to 200 metres and veto construction of new homes or hotels. The idea behind the original legislation was to protect the shoreline and immediate coastal area from unchecked development, but it also affected properties that had previously been built perfectly legally. But while the law - from the national government - helps many, thousands more homes in inland areas are still blighted by the threat of demolition from the Junta de Andalucia regional government. They have been declared ‘illegal’ with planning permissions withdrawn by the Junta, despite the owners having bought in good faith.

UNCERTAIN: Observatory closure looms.

Observatory under threat

THE observatory at Calar Alto could cost almost €40 million to close. Worries about the observatory are at an all time high as, if it closes, the loss to the scientific community will be huge and the bill for its closure equally huge. Ricardo Hernandez, UGT delegate to Almeria, comments that dismantling the observatory could cost up to €40 million as the government would be responsible not only for taking down the building but also restoring the

environment and countryside. Local town councils in the area have expressed their concern over the closure as it would mean the loss of one of Europe’s most important scientific centres. Workers at the observatory feel they have their hands tied as they only have a budget of €1.6 million to do the necessary works to save the centre - this is not even half the money needed. The next few weeks will be decisive for the future of this scientific centre.

1 dead, 2 hurt in shooting A 60-YEAR-OLD MAN from El Ejido, Almeria, has been remanded in custody for shooting his neighbour dead and wounding two others. The two wounded are the dead man’s wife, 30, who was hit in the head and her friend, 20, who was shot in the side. Neither are in medical danger. The man, who will not be eligible for bail, first shot the three neighbours and then attacked his wife and a friend who were also wounded.

The attack happened after the two men had had another argument: the perpetrator went home, got a gun, which was home-made, and shot the victim dead. Having taken the life of his 48-year-old neighbour, in the Cañada Cortes area, the man then gave himself up to police. The apparent motive for the killing is thought to be a dispute over herding routes and land limits which they have been arguing about for years.

Tasty treats made easy

T

IMES are changing and whereas Spanish housewives used to have time to prepare elaborate dishes, working women now need mealtimes to be quick and easy. However, the food industry is well aware of this and is coming up with ways to prepare traditional dishes which make life easier. One of the main components of the Spanish diet is ‘tortilla’ (Spanish omelette) but it takes time to prepare, which many don’t have. However, many companies already sell the ingredients in packets, ready to use, so that all that is required is to add some egg and prepare the omelette in a frying pan. If even this is too time-consuming, there are the ready-made versions, which can be prepared quickly in the pan or microwave. A popular treat for breakfast is ‘churros’ and Basque chef Andoni Luis Aduriz has come up with the idea of selling the dough pastry in spray form.

Quote of the Week “It depends on the Ministry of Public Works, but I think it’s a good idea,” mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, regarding the possibility of naming the Madrid-Barajas Airport after recently deceased Adolfo Suarez, Spain’s first democratically elected Prime Minister after the Franco era.

The can then has to be shaken and goes straight into a frying pan with hot oil, and within minutes a family can be sitting down to enjoy a plate-full of churros with a mug of thick hot chocolate. The traditional cold soups ‘gazpacho,’ ‘ajoblanco’ and ‘salmorejo’ can be found in many supermarket cold cabinets in cartons and ready to consume. Elsewhere in the cold cabinet you may find ‘boquerones en vinagre’ (filleted fresh anchovies in vinegar), ready cut Manchego cheeses or Iberian ham, roast meats ready to serve, microwaveable ‘paella’ and even the refreshing ‘tinto de verano’ (red wine with lemonade) ready mixed and bottled. These are not only ways of making life easier for those in charge of preparing meals in Spanish homes, but also a way of obtaining more sales and making products easier to export, as the products become more accessible to a wider market.

These included the hiking route and a pleasant walk through the streets of the village to see all the emblematic buildings, as well as a visit to the castle in the morning. During their visit the teachers and students also went to Tabernas, Sorbas and Granada to see the Alhambra Palace. On April 7 a group of teachers and students from the Albujaira high school will visit Croydon for one week as part of the exchange. The Council of Huercal-Overa gave all the students a small gift as a souvenir of their time in the village.

NEW LAWS: Police will be able to fine drivers without pulling them over.

Pedestrian breath tests on the way BREATH tests for pedestrians, higher motorway speed limits and a total ban on speed camera detectors are just some of the new road laws, due to be ratified in June. Also on the cards is the compulsory wearing of cycle helmets for under 16s in urban areas and new rules to force foreign residents to register their vehicles. But not all the regulations are being tightened - rules that restricted the right of cancer patients to drive are being relaxed. At the moment doctors have to specifically take up a cancer patient’s right to drive

with the traffic authority (DGT), but those restrictions are due to be relaxed. Jay walking pedestrians will, under the new regulations, find themselves liable to take a drugs and/or alcohol test. Up until now they could only be made to take a test if they were involved in an accident. Congress decided to bring in new rules setting out deadlines for the registration of foreign registered cars, as it was proving difficult to track down their owners to pay fines. Police will also be able to fine drivers for offences without having to pull them over.

Spain biggest producer of wine

Catalonia quakes

THE wet spring and sunny summer resulted in Spain becoming the top wine producer of 2013. The International Organisation of Vine and Wine rankings will not be released until May, but if

SPAIN’S Girona Province was hit by an earthquake which struck just off the coast, shaking several towns and villages in the region on Wednesday. Measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, the quake hit at 1.13pm, according to Spain’s National Geological Institute. The quake was felt most strongly in the municipalities of Baix Empordà and Alt Empordà. Its epicentre was located off the coast between Palamòs and Palafrugell. Catalan daily La Vanguardia reported that no-one was injured and no damage has been documented. In September 2013 Spain saw some 400 earthquakes in the Gulf of Valencia. Since that time the area has seen intermittent intense seismic activity.

the figures are correct Spain’s pipped its competitors to the post. According to figures from the country’s agriculture ministry, wine production surged a massive 41 per cent last year, with

vineyards producing 50m hectolitres - enough to fill 6.7 billion bottles of wine. Spain beat competitors France and Italy, who reported 2013 harvests of 42 million and 47 million hectolitres respectively. Ángel Ortega, spokesperson for wine-growers from the La Mancha denomination, attributed the bumper year to unusual weather conditions: “It’s not often that you see all the right climate conditions come together like that.” More than 50 per cent of last year’s harvest came from Castilla-La Mancha. Others in Spain’s wine industry, such as Pau Roca of the Spanish Wine Federation, said it was a matter of time before Spain surpassed its neighbours. For years, production glitches saw Spain lag behind neighbouring wineproducers France and Italy. But it seems that recent investments in planting and irrigation systems, as well

BUMPER YEAR: Attributed to unusual weather conditions. as a renewed focus on productivity, helped the country excel. These factors - combined with the ideal weather resulted in the boom. The Madrid government welcomed the news, as it shows another industry on which the country can lean on in order to strengthen its fragile economy and assist the recovery process. Although very well-

known in Spain, La Mancha wines have not achieved the same recognition as wines such as Rioja and Cava. But it is hoped that the La Mancha wine can be well promoted abroad, particularly in markets like China and the US. Spain’s exports hit a record high last year and the surplus is expected to give the country another huge boost.

A note from the

Editor

Take care... W

ATCH out if you like a drink. Proposed new traffic laws will give police the power to breath test jay walking pedestrians. Up until now police could only do that if the pedestrian was involved in a road accident. But now anyone crossing the road where they shouldn’t will be liable to take a test for alcohol and drugs. That is a step too far (excuse the pun). Surely there are enough laws against drunkenness and unruliness without having to resort to alcohol tests at the drop of a hat. There is no need to suspect someone of being drunk - just taking a step onto the road would be enough to have the police descend with their alcohol meters. And on the crowded and often narrow pavements found in many Spanish towns and villages it can be nearly impossible to avoid stepping into the road. It is a charter for harassment of

people who have done nothing wrong and a sign of officialdom’s instinct to criminalise otherwise law abiding people.

Coastal good news THOUSANDS of owners of beach front properties built within 100 metres of the high water mark blighted with the threat of demolition, can sleep a little easier now. The new coastal law means they can now sell or pass on as bequests their homes, and removed the imminent threat of demolition (slated in for 2018). The old law had effectively made those homes - many already built quite legally - illegal. So some good news, but why do the Spanish authorities insist on putting many innocent people in such a distressing position in the first place? It is bad for tourism, bad for investment, and bad for the country.

Ono says yes to Vodafone VODAFONE has finally pulled off its deal with Spanish telecommunications’ company Ono. The €7.2 billion that the UK-owned company hands over for Ono is the largest acquisition by a foreign company in Spain since 2008. Ono, with 1.9 million clients in 12 autonomous regions, is the country’s largest cable company and has its own high-speed fibre optic network. Based on both companies’ figures in late 2013, Vodafone’s presence on Spain’s broadband market will grow from 7.5 per cent to 21 per cent. Acquiring Ono’s 1.1 million

mobile clients will increase its share of this market from 24.8 per cent to 26 per cent. Between them Telefonica, Vodafone and Orange will now control 90 per cent of Spain’s broadband and mobile market and up to 80 per cent of its customer base. Vodafone, which earned $130 billion (approximately €93 billion) from the sale of its US division last year, is also rumoured to be on the verge of making another big purchase. This time it is looking towards the UK with TalkTalk, the no-longer state owned BT Group and BSkyB possibly in its sights.

Despite boycott calls, global sales of Catalan cava fell by only 0.77 per cent to 241.3m bottles in 2013 with a €970 million turnover similar to 2012. Sales in the domestic market fell by 0.47 per cent, an improvement on 2012 when they dropped by

6.28 per cent. The effects of the politically-inspired boycott outside the region have diminished, sources said. The crisis, they continued, exerted a greater influence on sales and although two out of every three bottles are sent abroad, falling exports, particularly to the UK - were important. CAVA: Sales buoyant.

An investor will be sought through public tender, announced minister of Public Works, Ana Pastor. This will be a ‘positive step’ for all types of freight transport, Pastor maintained, while optimising Spain’s network of steadily improving track and its good geo-strategic position. Opening the door to private investment will arrive once the state operator makes the transition to a holding of four subsidiaries: the Renfe Viajeros passenger service, Renfe Mercancias (freight), Renfe Fabricacion y Mantenimiento (manufacture and maintenance) and Renfe Alquiler de Material Ferriviario. This fourth division which is due to be created in April will lease trains to private operators, Pastor explained. These will eventually compete with Renfe both for the passenger and freight service, she confirmed.

How to close the sale

C

LOSING a sale is stressful for most salesmen and women. Many sales books claim to offer the key to unlocking the secrets of closing a sale. These tend to confuse the reader and make matters worse. Many a grown man loses it when they come to ask for the order. I was able to reach the close in 30 minutes unless the client asked questions. However, I could not figure out why one sales person was taking up to two hours to explain his product. He couldn’t close. The best advice I ever received on closing a sale could have been written on the back of my business card. ‘Ask for the order.’ Closing the sale really is that simple, so why make a dog’s breakfast out of it. There is, however, one trick that will substantially increase your success rate when closing. Clients are as hesitant of making a decision as the salesman is in asking for the

order. Often a decision to buy will be put off and ditherers have their excuses ready. Once they say no or that they have to think about it the sale is not going to happen. Never ever ask outright for

CLOSING: Best to use the ‘either this or that’ method. the order but use instead the ‘either this or that’ close. When asking for an appointment the best approach is to suggest, “I have an hour Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon. Perhaps an hour in the evening might be better?” It is difficult to say no to that proposal. The order pad should be on the desk long before you reach this point.

Chasm separates rich and poor THE gulf between Spain’s rich and poor is growing wider. In January, Spain’s Oxfam-Intermon warned that Spain’s 20 greatest fortunes are worth €77 billion equivalent to the earnings of the country’s poorest 20 per cent. The following month Fundecas, the Cajas de Ahorro (savings banks) think-tank, drew attention to the northsouth divide between Spain’s richest and poorest regions.

In the third month of the year comes a third alert, this time from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The effects of the economic crisis on the richest and the poorest 10 per cent are more marked in Spain than in any other OECD member country, the organisation announced recently. The wealthiest 10 per cent barely noticed Spain’s double dip recession, with a 1 per cent drop in annual earnings between 2007 and 2010. Wages for the poorest 10 per cent fell by 14 per cent a year during the same period. The OECD report placed Italy’s rich-poor divide as the second-greatest after Spain’s but while its wealthiest 10 per cent also saw incomes fall by 1 per cent, they fell by only 4 per cent each year for the lowest earners. Spain’s high incomes were 13 times greater in 2010 than the lowest, the OECD found, compared with a 9.4 average. In contrast, the organisation compared the Spanish figures with Iceland’s where the earnings of the richest 10 per cent shrank by an annual 12 per cent and the poorest by 8 per cent. The OECD did not hesitate to identify the root of Spain’s problem. Public aid is not directed towards those most affected by the crisis, according to the report. “Social spending destined for relatively prosperous families is higher than in most other EU countries,” it claimed.

The same rules apply when asking for the order. Always have an Option B to hand. “I think this plan would best suit your needs but the cheaper plan B is a good deal too. Which do you prefer?” That close is also difficult to say no to. I have seen salespersons double and treble their sales simply by using the ‘either this or that’ close.

Wine industry must look abroad to grow THE SPANISH wine industry needs to look abroad if it wants to grow. That is according to a report by Rabobank called La Mancha in the Middle. It says that recent EU support programmes have improved the efficiency in Spanish wine production, but oversupply remains an issue. “While Spain has seen marked improvements in its wine production efficiency as a result of EU subsidies, it still struggles to build penetration in non-EU markets”, states Rabobank analyst, Stephen Rannekleiv. “In conjunction with grubbing-up subsidies, Spain was also a major recipient of vineyard restructuring funds which

has raised yields and is expected to lead to an increase in wine in the market. “A pressing concern for many is that much of this increased production is destined for markets already dealing with their own oversupply issues, such as France and Italy.” While these EU markets will remain important destinations for Spanish bulk wine, the industry must focus efforts on building market demand outside the EU, he added. Spain will need to build stronger brands in international markets, and adopt a more consumer-driven marketing focus which will require continued improvement of grower and brand owner alignment, said the report.

These incidents were recorded onto a memory chip, and transferred to my laptop, which was viewed by friends and family. My aim was to set up a Facebook page to show incidents of bad driving. The images would also be evidence if I am involved in any ‘incident.’ Is any part of the above illegal? T.H. (Torrevieja) A. Yes, practically all of it is illegal. Spain’s law of data protection is quite strict, as we mentioned. There is no law against having the cameras mounted in your car. However, if you record the images and show them to anyone in any form, you have committed an invasion of privacy under the law and you can be subject to severe fines. Further, these images are not admissible as evidence in court. The only strictly ‘legal’ cameras are those fitted in some new cars which basically act as expanded rearview mirrors. Many experts feel these Dashcams would be very useful and are opposed to the law as it stands. ARE they still at it? A Guardia Civil lieutenant colonel organised a luncheon at the Valdemoro barracks (Madrid) last February. His 81-year-old father, a former Guardia Civil lieutenant colonel, attended with several contemporaries. So far, so normal: what might be regarded as an old farts reunion. But the surname of son and father was Tejero and the older man was a conspirator behind the failed coup d’état of February 1981 who later served 15 years of a 30-year prison term. Other plotters were allegedly present but Tejero Jr gave orders not to register guests’ name although one emerged, that of Capt Jesus Muñecas Aguilar. Now 77, he told the invaded parliament chamber to await the arrival of “the competent military authority” and later spent five years in prison. The younger Tejero has been

removed from his post by the Ministry of the Interior and the Guardia Civil, whose upper reaches were unaware of the luncheon, described it as “inadmissible.” Whoever gave the game way must have been a Guardia Civil insider. That’s something that would never have happened 33 years ago.

Squaring up for a fight SELECTING the Partido Popular’s party presidents in Andalucia and the Basque region became a wrist-wrestling match between Soraya Saenz de Santamaria and Dolores de Cospedal. Saenz de Santamaria is vice-president of the national government and De Cospedal who is the PP’s national secretary general is also regional president of Castilla-La Mancha. Splitting power between rivals in this way is the type of solomonic solution that president Mariano Rajoy is comfortable with, but another struggle is in the offing. Sleight of hand ALBERTO RUIZ-GALLARDON, minister of Justice, was considered something of a liberal until he became Minister of Justice. Possibly he had a road to Damascus moment that led him into a cul-de-sac but at least he makes a convenient whipping-boy for the government. Rejection of his abortion reform plans does not abate but RuizGallardon could be using an old conjuring ploy, because while everyone is talking about abortion they’re not looking elsewhere. So not many people noticed that between 2012 and 2013 the minister pardoned 10 public administration employees found guilty of corruption. Nice piece of sleight of hand.

ECENT news that UK discount chain, Poundland, has floated on the stock market and wants more shops than Sainsbury’s should come as no surprise, given the squeeze other high street retailers have experienced during the recession. Retail experts believe Poundland’s plans demonstrate a permanent shift in British shopping habits with discount retailers the biggest winners from the recession. Poundland itself has expanded from over 200 shops five years ago to 500 today, with such an increase in sales that it plans expanding into Europe, with 10 stores here in Spain. So, while other high street retailers continue to struggle for survival, discount leader

Poundland is booming thanks to clever business tactics, marketing techniques and price comparisons used to appeal to its shoppers. With a new store opening every few days, its stock market value is almost £1 billion. Whenever I return to the UK, though, it’s hard to see on the average British high street anything but discount shops like Poundland, charity shops, bookies and payday lenders where once there were butchers, bakers, greengrocers and fishmongers. What were once family-run shops have been driven out of business with the result that every town centre now looks much the same. Why? Partly, it’s the result of out-of-town supermarkets which, with competitive prices and free parking, undercut the high street. The high rents and business rates imposed are also a factor in driving out small, independent

businesses, a situation not helped by local councils with exorbitant parking charges and fines. Now, there are many who say that if you’d rather still go to a butcher’s, a baker’s, a greengrocer’s and a fishmonger’s, fine they’re still around. They go on to say they simply don’t have the time it would take, plus they like the choice and free parking supermarkets offer. And if city centres are ghost towns, it’s because they don’t provide what people are looking for. You could just as well say the production of the motor car destroyed the occupation of blacksmiths who no longer have to shoe horses. True. But who really wants to visit identikit towns with identikit shops and discount chains? Nora Johnson’s thrillers (www.nora-johnson.com) available from Amazon. Profits to Cudeca.

The little things that mean so much IT is very rare for someone to stand out in such a busy environment as this. However, I feel you ought to know that you have an outstanding employee within your organisation. I do not know the name of this gentleman but I am sure you will be able to work out who delivers the newspapers to our school. There are three things that make this gentleman stand way above all others. He ALWAYS smiles. I only had to ask him once to pass me one of the papers and he does this every single time without asking! He always removes the white plastic strips that keep the papers together. This makes all the difference as people don’t have to struggle with these strips which normally tear the papers. Big time fraud WELL said Nora Johnson! How refreshing to see an article which tells it like it is, not as most of the media and the current UK government portray it. It is high time the spotlight was turned on the very wealthy tax evaders/avoiders, also private landlords. They are costing the economy billions more than those on benefits, the majority of whom are in low paid jobs which do not pay a living wage.

All at sea THE municipal indoor swimming pool in Huercal Overa (Almeria) closed on July 31, 2013 and I read in your newspaper a few weeks ago that the mayor there was hoping to get it reopened very soon. There is absolutely nowhere near us that has an indoor pool and goodness knows when, or if ever, the brand new one in Albox will open. Unsackable IN ‘Lessons to be learnt’ (Issue 1497) Mr McBride fails to understand the underlying cause of Spain’s high unemployment. Spain, along with France, has stringent employment regulations which have created an inflexible labour market. Put another way, Spanish companies cannot lay off employees as easily as UK companies. The French in particular argue that job security is fundamental to safeguarding family life and the social structure of the country. A legitimate argument, some might say, especially for those already in work but not so good if you are looking for employment. It means that companies must be absolutely certain of their future prospects before recruiting new staff because of the difficulties of dismissing them should their business take a downturn. Spanish companies are therefore reluctant to take the same risks as they would in the UK and USA. Much is said of freeing up the labour market here but precious little has been achieved. Ken Bethell, Puerto de Mazarron (Murcia)

On the track IT’S not rocket science and it’s not brain surgery (although it would seem that the latter is needed). Regarding the vanishing Malaysian airline, two things come to mind. Why isn’t every aircraft fitted with a small, floatable electronic device (in case it ditches in water) that breaks away and emits a signal that satellites pick up, pinpointing the position of the incident within 50 metres or so? Secondly, all aircraft are fitted with a device that shows where it is in the sky. What reason should there ever be for it to be disabled by anyone on board the aircraft? This is a stupendously stupid arrangement and no-one can convince me that it is necessary. Keith Hallam, Blackpool (UK)

DO get fed up with people telling me I’m merely being paranoid when I discuss the decline of the UK and its society. These people (and I’m delighted to say there are now far fewer than in the past!) seem to forget, that in my dual role as a working entertainer and columnist, I speak and am contacted by a tremendous number of so called ‘ordinary folk,’ from all walks of British life. I can tell you quite categorically, they are all now totally peed off with what is happening to our once great country. They are sick of the leniency shown toward criminals, they are sick of the laws and ‘human rights’ favouring ethnic and other minorities. They are sick of the ghettos, embedded like cancerous tumours in most of their great cities. They are sick of piddling bureaucrats.

Because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you...

IN DECLINE: The attitude of the British public is changing. They are sick of being ruled by decisions made in other countries and they are heartily sick of Islamic bigots who seem to be able to get away with just about anything. The tolerant mood of the British public is undoubtedly changing. People are

beginning to speak out. Most have been quiet up to now; almost afraid to air their views in case of being accused of bigotry or racism. Well no more. And why shouldn’t they, when the ranting of their enemies (and believe me, they

are enemies) are not only allowed to be aired just about anywhere, but even when they contain blatant, hate provoking anti-British rhetoric, are punished by a mere slap on the wrist? If that level of incitement was aired in public by a member of the BNP they would be undoubtedly thrown in jail. In my cabaret spot, I have a couple of fairly light digs at the ‘changing face’ of Britain. When I first used the remarks they were met mainly by an almost fearful silence. As time went on the odd chuckle was the result. Over a period the chuckles turned into unchecked laughter. The same remarks are now greeted not only by laughter, but often applause.

A more accurate barometer for the changing attitude of the British public would be hard to imagine. I think one of the reasons for the disquiet is because, even with Cameron’s declarations, not much has changed. I suggest Dave and the team start speeding up the instigation of a few of their election promises, before a thoroughly fed up British public begin to take to the streets. If that happens then the prophecies of Enoch Powel may finally come to pass, coupled with finding Mr Farage and colleagues posing on the steps of number 10! Have a good week. Try to lend a helping hand. and whatever ya do. Always keep the faith Love Leapy. Leapylee2002@gmail.com

Michel Roux Jr leaves MasterChef: Professionals over business conflict Richard Shanley

DISHING THE DIRT OF EUROPA DIGITAL

MICHEL ROUX JR has left his role as a judge on MasterChef: The Professionals. The celebrity chef - who appeared on the show’s panel from the very first series in 2008 - was forced to exit the show because of a business conflict. “MasterChef is sad to announce after a very happy relationship with Michel Roux Jr as one of the judges on the Professionals series that he will no longer be appearing on the BBC due to a conflict in commercial interests,” the show announced on its Facebook page. “Chef Michel has been a committed and extremely well loved and respected member of the MasterChef team, an

inspiration for the young chefs who have appeared on the show and those he works with on behalf of MasterChef off camera. We wish him the very best of luck in everything he does.” Casting for the new episodes is currently taking place on the show’s official website. The Trip returns to BBC Two in April for its second series ‘The Trip to Italy.’ Michael Winterbottom agains directs Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon in the six-part follow-up to 2010’s BAFTA Award-winning series. Following the UKset series, the pair will this time visit restaurants in Piemonte, Liguria, Tuscany, Rome, Amalfi and Capri. “Rob, tired from the responsibilities of being the father of a young child, is looking for some adventure,” explained the press release. Europa Digital invite you to an Open Day on Saturday April 5 from 11am till 3pm at Pueblo Laguna Bar and Restaurant. Come and enjoy a

When Almeria strummed, the world listened! Ric Polansky moved to Mojacar in 1969 as a pioneer developer. He reads extensively and has travelled in South America panning gold and looking for El Dorado.

FRANCO turned his back on the province. Its people weren’t on his side in the civil war so consequently it was the last zone to be aided and developed. Throughout Spain it was known as the “forgotten province”, that is, if they could remember to call it that. In fact, on trips to Madrid it wasn’t infrequent to explain in vivid detail the ‘unknown province that was below Granada, between Murcia and Malaga.’ In years gone by historians would quote other scholars that

explained “when Almeria was Almeria, Granada was its garden.” A lot of important and vibrant things occurred here, but no one got to know about them until the word leaked out and then finally, historians started to take note. Here’s a vignette of information that should make you walk with a little more pride, if not strut. Let’s get personal here. What musical instrument is more iconic in summarising Spain than the guitar? Well, it was born here. Nurtured and grew into its final shape and resonance sound. His name was Antonio Torres Jurado and he was born in La Canada (near the airport). At the age of 16 he moved to Vera, married and moved to Granada obtaining the

In the trauma that followed he moved on down the road to Sevilla to start a new life on the famed Calle Sierpes. He stayed with the only trade he had learned, that of fashioning a type of musical apparatus. But his new life meant new beginnings and changes. He knew well of the history of his instrument and its evolution from the kithara of the ancient Greeks, to the cithara of the Latins and then the gitara of Andalucia Arabic. But, Antonio Torres was

different, he wasn’t just a craftsman, he too was concerned about the sound, the resonance and lyrical melodies. He quit selling and started making

changes. First he changed centuries of design by adding more curves. Soon too he jumped away from the notation that five fingers

had a man so only five strings were used. Success came overnight. You didn’t own a guitar unless it came from the Calle Sierpes and was made by Antonio Torres Jurado. The resounding effect kept everyone in raptures. The audience’s minds floated to far distant hills and the warmth of family fires. The man from the province of Almeria had given the world something it could hold unto forever and strum the reminisces of home. In years gone by he was often asked the simple secret to his success in which he might have replied “I shaped the body of the instrument with curves like a woman, so it can be held tight and added one more string for control.”

Scared to be happy

PSYCHOLOGISTS say that millions of people avoid feeling happy because they think it will tempt fate and lead to unhappiness. Researchers from New Zealand’s Victoria University of Wellington, said they found many people fear that being happy also makes them seem selfish, boring or shallow. The study also looked at cultural differences. In America, happiness is one of the most important values guiding people’s lives. Western cultures are more driven by an urge to maximise happiness and minimise sadness, but in Eastern cultures, it was found that many avoided showing happiness.

Chocolate pill to be used in trials CHOCOLATE pills are to be tested to see if they can help prevent heart attacks and strokes. Cocoa flavanols have already shown to improve blood pressure and cholesterol levels, but the benefit of flavanols are usually destroyed in the processing of making chocolate. However, now manufacturers have found a way to extract the nutritional benefits of cocoa and are ready to test their benefits. Previous studies have suggested that cocoa flavanols could help dementia sufferers. A study of 18,000 people will be carried out. Participants will get dummy pills or two capsules a day of cocoa flavanols for

Reasons behind bad breath

BAD breath is estimated to affect half the population at some point and is usually caused by an excess of bacteria in the mouth. Normally, simple brushing and good oral hygiene can alleviate the problem, but bad breath can also be a result and sign of other conditions: Too much stress. When stressed the nervous system kicks in and the production of saliva stops, making the mouth dry which can make bad breath worse. Saliva stones. Another cause of bad breath are saliva stones blocking the salivary glands which form

when food debris reacts with chemicals in the saliva, crystallising in to a stone. Bacterial infection. Any bacterial infection of the nose, mouth or throat, can lead to bad breath. Certain rare cancer cells also have an odour and are more easily infected than ordinary cells so when they occur in the nose, throat, tonsils or larynx it can smell when breathing out. Mouthwash. People use mouthwash assuming it will freshen breath, but some containing alcohol can do the opposite as it dries the mouth out making bad breath worse.

F

OUNDED in 1999, Serenity House is the longest established Englishspeaking treatment centre in Spain and was recently identified as one of the world’s top 10 rehab centres by Global Healthcare Magazine. Four years ago, Chris Spencer and Anita Cragen took over the Centre and its reputation grew quickly, given Chris and Anita’s passion about recovery. The Centre helps people with all sorts of addictions including cocaine, sex, gambling and drugs. Chris has worked in addiction over 20 years and Anita is a 12step therapist who had been in recovery for over 10 years and who has since helped hundreds of individuals recover. Though they can house up to 12 clients, they accommodate only five at a time, making treatment exclusive to each client.

SERENITY HOUSE: Clients come from all walks of life to seek help. Serenity House offers full board accommodation; clients also have access to their own kitchen. Facilities are modern, with latest multi-media technology and in a comfortable setting. The programme is dynamic

and statistics of recovery are high. After admission, the client is assessed and given a timetable, after which a flexible programme is mapped out, changeable according to progress made.

It is important that the client has a clear idea of the stages of the recovery process, a process that may save their life in the future. As a world leader in the 12step programme of recovery, Serenity House has been

sought after and has worked in various parts of the world. Clients have said: “I arrived lonely, scared and sceptical. A month later I am leaving having re-found the person I had lost. I am happy, strong and looking forward to enjoying life” (Kate, UK). “As someone highly sceptical of the idea of rehab, Serenity House has convinced me… I feel as if I had rid myself of all the weight I have been carrying most of my life” (Jean, France). Serenity House’s clients come from all walks of life all over the world with one thing in common: The inability to stop using drink or drugs combined with the desire to seek expert help. Nearly half of the population suffer with sleeping problems ACCORDING to the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN) between 20 and 48 per cent of the adult population suffers from sleeping difficulties; either struggling to initially fall asleep or maintaining their sleep pattern. The SEN believes that 10 per cent of cases are due to a disorder of chronic and severe sleep, a figure that could even be greater due to the high number of patients which are undiagnosed. The most frequent sleep disorder is insomnia (20-30 per cent) followed by restless legs syndrome affecting approximately 5 per cent of the population and sleep apnea (2-4 per cent). SEN say that when adequate sleep is not achieved by some kind of

disorder, it not only affects a person’s intellectual capacity and performance, but increases the risk of

hypertension and the likelihood of developing other diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s (between 42 and 98 per

cent of Parkinson’s patients and 25 per cent of Alzheimer’s patients suffer sleep disorders).

Wine drinkers must be tempted

BULLS with human faces instead of labels, black bottles with just a large white number on them; these are just some of the marketing techniques being used by the wine company Vintae - one of the more modern Spanish vintners. Vintae are also one of the companies responsible for the proliferation of web points of sale, wine blogs, social networking sites dedicated to wine, designer labels and modern bottles. Ricardo Arambarri, the face of Vintae and a native of Rioja, comments that the industry has undergone many changes recently including the ‘education’ of

the end consumer through blogs and websites. He goes on to say that, in the past, the consumer simply drank table wine as a matter of course, but now wine is associated with more celebratory occasions and therefore demands a more specific marketing technique. This new marketing method must tempt the consumer not only with an attractive label but also with sumptuous descriptions of the contents of their bottle. At Vintae they are working on marketing to different demographics in order to capture a variety of markets.

Get organised, use a calendar THE greatest problem with going back to Blighty isn’t the weather (grey, cloudy, rainy days and long cold nights), it’s losing track of what has to be done and when! I just had 14 days away from the computer (not a problem - DENIAL!) and thought that I had created enough articles for the publications that I write for. WRONG! So how do we fix this problem? Ever heard the phrase “best laid plans of mice and men,” well that was me. How then, can man’s greatest adversary, the computer, become man’s greatest ally? I should imagine that I’m not the only one who uses a calendar to keep track of what needs doing and

when! But have you considered using one that is on your computer? I first came across this concept when I had a ‘dodgy’ copy of the now discontinued Outlook, which served as email, client and calendar and it was incredible! Strangely enough I had seen something similar on the Linux platform several years earlier (you can’t keep a great idea down when someone else can steal it!).

There are two main types of organiser. Offline, which works without internet, and Online, the other one. I use both! To be accurate, I use the one provided by my hotmail account (now called OUTLOOK.COM) which I have linked to my tablet (cheap but efficient). As most people know, I have a clinic at Jacks Bar (Albox) on a Friday afternoon. The dates for this are in the calendar right up to Xmas this year, and come Xmas I increase these ‘appointments’ to include all of next year. Anyway, I’m out of space for today so more about organisation, calendar, PIMs (not the drink) and all thinks time compliant, next week. Info: 689 892 745.

Let’s brighten up the apartment blocks Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Dick Handscombe Spain’s best known expat gardening author about to start his 26th winter cut back.

W

HEN I first came to the Spanish costa for a holiday in 1960 the number of tourists and apartment blocks were rather fewer than today, as were the prices of restaurant meals and drinks. Indeed the unexciting hotel tourist food was forgotten each evening to enjoy real Spanish hospitality in small family run restaurants largely patronised by local Spaniards. Coming from the UK everywhere seemed to be filled with colourful flowering plants at ground level and on the balconies of two to five storey buildings. There were no Benidorm type skyscrapers in those days. While dining, the only interruption, sometimes two or three times during the evening, was the offer of stems of quality fresh perfumed roses for my then wife by elegantly dressed Spaniards making a few pesetas from adding pleasure to the dining experience.

BALCONIES: Used to be filled with colourful flowering plants, enhance yours now. One was not pestered with substandard named brand Chinese copies of leather goods, sunglasses, CDs by recent immigrants who may well have earlier in the day sold the sad plastic flowers in vases that sit on many tourist restaurant tables these days. Wandering back to one’s hotel very replete, one did not get the modern day impression that you were walking past prison block A, B, C and D, as someone described a

coastal resort the other weekend. Recognising this trend a few years ago I wrote, with Clodagh my wife, the book ‘Apartment Gardening - Mediterranean style’ to hopefully stimulate more apartment owners to make better use of their balconies and terraces by converting them into colourful, perfumed and perhaps productive patios in the sky. Fortunately some apartment owners, resident and non-

resident, have taken note and there are now more delightfully looking apartment blocks in expatriate and Spanish neighbourhoods. But so much more could be done. The book includes many photographs illustrating vividly what can be done and the roles plants, ceramic pots and tiles, modern and antique artefacts can play in producing the concept of a home in the sun. That’s not such a stupid idea

as largely unused balconies and terraces range from four to 40 and 400 square metres for roof tops. Yes, there is the sun to contend with, but blinds and awnings can immediately change the climate whether apartments face east, south, west or north. Clodagh took a long time sorting out 120 or so plants most appropriate to planting in full, partial or semi shade and the few that genuinely enjoy the full summer suns. The block of photos illustrate the range of possibilities without being very creative. You may be amazed by some of the photos in the book taken of real situations. So if you have an apartment do have a go this spring. If you live in a villa, buy the book as a present for friends who do. I will have some copies of the book at the Calpe Homes, Gardens and Lifestyle Show next week. It’s easy to turn a current storage space into your garden home to immediately enhance your Spanish lifestyle. Come and have a chat on Stand 66.

Best blooms for Mother’s Day MOTHER’S DAY is on Sunday and flowers are the traditional gift to give on Mothering Sunday. If you haven’t already ordered your bouquet, try taking into consideration the

significance of each flower and create a truly meaningful display: Roses Roses are not just about true love, they have long been associated with

motherhood, as they were sacred to the Greek goddess Isis, who was seen as the ideal mother. Lilacs Lilacs are known to signify the love between a mother and child. Irises The iris symbolises affection and warmth, and some Christians associate the flower with the Virgin Mary. Carnations According to Christian legend, pink carnations are believed to have first grown

from the ground where the Virgin Mary shed tears over Jesus’s death. Many believe carnations are a symbol of a mother’s eternal love and an ideal choice for Mother’s Day. As well as the meaning of a flower take into account your mum’s personal choice of her favourite flower in her favourite colour. ROSES: Associated with motherhood.

New homes wanted... AN expat is looking for homes for 11 puppies born to a stray dog she rescued. Helen explained: “Coco is probably a chocolate lab/cross pointer, who I found wandering around the mountains by my home in Rambla de Oria about October time last year. “I could tell she was starving and neglected, but she was far too timid to let me near her. For months I went out looking for her and giving her food and eventually by Christmas she let us bring her home, scared and unsure, but obviously happy to be in a warm and caring environment. To my surprise over the last few weeks Coco grew and grew and on Sunday 16th she gave birth to 11 beautiful puppies.

COCO: Now has 11 puppies. How she has managed to keep these puppies healthy enough for all of them to survive is short of a miracle considering how neglected she was when I found her. “I really need to find good homes for the puppies because including Coco (who I cannot now let go) I own six dogs altogether and I also do dog sitting in my own home.” If anyone can help please contact Helen on email hellsbells1940@hotmail.co.uk.

Getting to know you... V

OLVO - already known for being at the forefront of driver safety - is developing systems for cars to ‘get to know their drivers.’ The ‘driver sensors’ they are developing could detect when a driver is tired or inattentive, and take measures to keep the car and its occupants safe. Examples of this include technology that detect closed eyes or what the driver is looking at. “This will enable the driver to be able to rely a bit more on their car, and know that it will help them when needed,” explains Per Landfors, engineer at Volvo Cars and project leader for driver support functions. By placing a sensor on the dashboard to monitor aspects

DRIVER SENSORS: Could detect when a driver is tired or inattentive. such as in which direction the driver is looking, how open their eyes are, as well as their head position and angle, it is possible to develop precise safety systems that detect the driver’s state and are able to adjust the car accordingly. This also means that the car will ensure that it does not stray out of the lane or get too close to the car in front when the driver is not paying attention, as well as being able to wake a driver who is falling asleep. “Since the car is able to detect if a driver is not paying attention, safety systems can be adapted

more effectively. For example, the car’s support systems can be activated later on if the driver is focused, and earlier if the driver’s attention is directed elsewhere,”

Per Landfors explains. Some of the current systems that can be included are Lane Keeping Aid, Collision warning with full auto brake and Adaptive

Cruise Control with Queue Assist. The technology is based on a sensor mounted on the dashboard in front of the driver. Small LEDs illuminate the driver with infrared light, which is then monitored by the sensor. Infrared light is just outside the wavelengths that the human eye can see, which means that the person behind the wheel doesn’t notice it at all. Driver sensors are also opening up other possibilities. By monitoring eye movements, the car would be able to adjust both interior and exterior lighting to follow the direction in which the driver is looking. The car would also be able to adjust seat settings, for instance, simply by recognising the person sitting behind the wheel.

Drive safely with Tyre King

H

AVING the right tyres on a vehicle, and tyres which are in good condition, are essential to driving safely; tyres are of course the only point of contact between a vehicle and the ground. It’s not just a question of fitting the correct size and type of tyres to a vehicle. It’s also ensuring optimum air pressure, checking the tread is not too worn and keeping an eye out for any kind of damage to the tyres. In this part of the world in particular, the amount of miles a vehicle clocks up is not the only factor affecting tyre condition. Potholes and unmade-up roads take their toll. So too does the climate; hot sunshine can cause tyre side walls to crack, graze, perish or distort. Tyre King, now in their fourth year of trading, pride themselves on providing the very best service and price. Expertise and experience, but also service and honesty are still

Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, Chairman and Chief Executive at Bentley Motors, commenting at a press conference in London, said: “It will create a completely new segment in the SUV

Renault Trafic range is refreshed THIS summer will see Renault refresh its Trafic range as it perpetuates the

success story of one of its most popular models, with 1.6 million sales since 1980.

This practical and economical ‘Van à Vivre’ will sport a new look both inside and out, while benefiting from clever smart innovations to facilitate the lives of business customers, as well as a new range of responsive engines. The vehicle will be available with a new Renault-developed 1.6 dCi power-plant, including a twinturbocharged version that boasts fuel consumption of less than six litres per 100km. New Trafic comes with a completely new exterior design. The front incorporates the bigger, more upright logo that is emblematic of Renault’s new brand identity. Its stance is forceful and dynamic, while its wide, slender headlights give it an expressive look, and the more sloping windscreen results in a clear division with the bonnet. Sharper lines make the vehicle’s silhouette more dynamic, whilst the sturdiness has been retained courtesy of a wrap-around front bumper.
