Ban on boy racers and mobility scooters... BOY RACERS using electric mobility scooters could be banned from the streets of Benidorm. Those who ignore planned new regulations could face fines of between €50 and €90. Companies which rent out the electric scooters will have to demand from their clients a certificate to prove their disability or show they are over 55years of age, and provide civil liability insurance of at least €60,000. Locals have been complaining of apparently fit young people speeding along the pavements, sometimes under the influence of alcohol. The law to regulate the use of mobility scooters in Benidorm will be discussed at the next council meeting. The Council for Mobility has proposed changes to local laws, which will include restrictions on rental and ownership of mobility

scooters. An estimated 500 scooters are on the streets of Benidorm on any one day. Users will have to travel at walking speed and only in pedestrian areas, unless there are none or they are impossible for them to use. Driving a mobility scooter under

the effects of drugs or alcohol is banned. Rental companies with premises in Benidorm will have to register with the council and fines will be introduced for both companies and users, depending on who is responsible for breaking the regulations.

Business (almost) as usual on Benidorm to Alfaz del Pi line THE Trenet tram line between Alfaz del Pi and Benidorm will be cut for three-and-a-half months. A bus will be provided by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV) between Alfaz and Benidorm stations so that passengers can continue their journeys in both directions. Work has already begun on this section of Line 9 track, affecting not

only Alfaz station but also the Disco Benidorm and Cami de Coves halts. The regional government is spending €3.3 million on improvements which include a 135metre viaduct to replace an existing embankment. Other embankments and railway cuttings between the stations will be reinforced.

This strip will end at the town’s seafront ‘paseos’ or, in the case of the Poniente Beach, the wooden boardwalk built three years ago. Every name counts (literally) LIKE all Costa Blanca towns, Teulada-Moraira needs its foreign residents to register on the Padron. Registering has always been mutually beneficial for town halls and residents, but is now more important than ever. “It is an act of solidarity toward other residents and the town,” declared Teulada-Moraira’s mayor

Antoni Joan Bertomeu. Accompanied by Sylvia Tatnell, councillor for EU Relations, Bertomeu explained the national government pays the town hall €131 for every resident on the municipal register. The 2,700 Teulada-Moraira residents from other EU countries are now obliged by the national

statistics’ office INE to confirm their presence on the Padron. Not doing so could lose €400,000 from the central government that the town hall needs for municipal services. Sylvia Tatnell also reminded residents the Diputacion is giving a talk in English on the importance of the Padron at 4pm on November 27 at the Senieta Moraira.

OVEMBER 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The day aims to raise awareness of the fact that women are subject to rape, domestic abuse and other forms of violence. The date is based on the 1960 assassination of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic which was ordered by Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. In December 1999, the date received its official United Nations (UN) resolution. Events are held throughout many parts of the world on this day, including Spain, to express rejection of violence against women. In the past decade, more than 700 women have died in Spain at the hands of their partners or former partners, and according to the government, 600,000 women every year are the victims of domestic violence, although there are only 140,000 complaints on average every year against the abusers. There is not a unique profile for victims of gender violence. Amongst the 700 who have died, there were foreign women who had no family or friends in Spain, disabled women, and women with no studies, but there were also those with university degrees, members of political parties,

Nine kilometres of bad road THE number of cars using the N332 between Villajoyosa and Campello continues to increase with fewer motorists using the AP-7 toll road. An average 22,830 vehicles used this hazardous main road each day in 2012 compared to 19,830 in 2011 according to the latest statistics from Spain’s General Traffic Directorate (DGT). It is now the busiest part of the N332 between Campello and Ondara, and has outstripped the notorious Altea to Benidorm section. The 15 kilometres between both towns is beset by bends, gradients and exits to the many urbanisations in the area. Heavy lorries taking rubbish to the Les Canyades landfill site in Campello have also added to the problems.

DENIA: A partial view of the harbour.

Slip-up over a slipway THERE is still no public slipway at Denia’s yacht harbour. It was removed last year by the regional government’s Infrastructure department when the Paseo del Raset was remodelled. At the time, the 500 boat-owners who rent public moorings were promised a replacement slipway would be constructed. Denia Town Hall announced in August that the ramp would be built beside the Yacht Club, at the site chosen by the boat-owners. Varadero Port Denia which runs the Marina would meet the €30,000 cost. Nothing has happened since then. “We have to pay to use the marina

company’s boat-lift,” said Eduardo Garcia, one of the owners. Apart from the cost, the lift does not operate at the weekend when most owners want to use their boats. He also pointed out that fees paid to the Infrastructure department’s Ports’ Directorate include a facility to launch and remove boats. Boats that are five metres long now cost their owners more than €800 a year in mooring fees, while those measuring six metres have to pay €1,200. The Generalitat earned more than €1 million from the Denia moorings last year, the owners claimed. “But where is our slipway?”

SWEDISH students recently visited Campello on an exchange programme. They were welcomed by the Education councillor Marisa Navarro and the mayor, Juanjo Berenguer who spoke in Swedish, English, Spanish and Valencian. The 23 young people and three teachers spent 10 enjoyable days in Campello, staying with local families and sharing classes and leisure time with local students.

Flowers brighten up Alicante’s roadsides APPROXIMATELY 86,000 plants have been bedded out in Alicante City’s gardens, traffic islands and central reservations. The plants are mainly cyclamen and pansies that are able to withstand the lower winter temperatures. They have cost the city council around 20 cents each, said the Urban Attention councillor Andres Llorens, with an outlay of around €17,000. This twice-yearly ritual will be repeated in the spring and the entire cost comes out of the city’s annual ‘green spaces’ budget of €4 million. Recycled water is used for the plants.

Landscapes, seascapes, sunsets, skies, people, places, dancers, animals as well as feelings and faces are amongst her many subjects. Jenny commutes between Spain, London and Canada and now has a global list of clients. Last year she held her first London exhibition which was a great success, the artist told us, as clients snapped up pictures from her colourful collection. “My main objective as an artist is to inspire hope, lift the spirit, elevate the soul, give people inner peace and happiness. Subsidised school meals SAN JUAN Town Hall has approved all applications for subsidised school lunches. Although the majority of the 327 requests were granted by the regional government’s Education department, they ruled that 85 were ineligible.

These will be covered by the town hall, announced local Education councillor Javier Yebes. Sixty per cent of the regional government grants were for the maximum €420, with the remainder receiving 70 per cent.

San Juan will pay 55 per cent towards the meals of those turned down. Having spent €24,500 of its €27,300 meal’s budget, the balance will go to local Parents’ Associations for school materials, Yebes said.

Getting up close and personal ALTEA Town Hall wants to get closer to Alteanos. “Residents want councillors to learn what is happening each day and to see it for themselves,” said Mayor Miguel Ortiz. With this in mind, six councillors from the PP and Cipal have been assigned a section of the town and an adjoining rural area that they will visit regularly. “They will be the voice, eyes and ears of Altea residents,” the mayor explained. Less spent at the local fiestas CRISIS or no crisis, Benidorm’s town fiestas were as wellattended as always. There were differences, however. Floats were smaller and more confetti than sweets rained down on the public who lined the streets during the main procession. Stalls selling candyfloss, churros and other traditional fiestas’ products also noticed a change in spending habits. There were more people around than ever, stallholders said, but their takings were 50 per cent down on last year. A similar story was heard at the fairground, where fiestagoers spent less at food stalls and on the rides than before.

Urban artists find their Eden AN unfinished urbanisation has become a ‘living art gallery’. The 111 unfinished houses that were built 40 years ago in El Greco Urbanisation in Montgo Mountain, Denia, are a blank canvas for graffiti artists in the region, including work by ‘Cholbi’ an appreciated graffiti artist in the Marina Alta area. Gibraltar border checks are legal THE EU Commission has ruled that Spain has not violated any laws with the tougher border controls in Gibraltar which began this summer. The border controls followed conflict with the Gibraltar authorities over several concrete blocks being dumped in the Bay of Algeciras. The EU has issued recommendations for both Spain and the UK, saying that managing the border is a constant challenge. Spain is recommended to make better use of available space on the Spanish side of the border checkpoint, be more selective in checks and exchange more information with the UK. Meanwhile, the UK is recommended to guarantee non-systematic controls based on the risk to travellers and their belongings, improve legislation to contribute to the fight against smuggling, and exchange more information with Spain.

Child killer may be out in days A MAN sentenced to 186 years in prison for the murder of three girls, could be released any day. On January 27, 1993, the gruesome discovery of their dead bodies shook the whole of Spain. Their names were Miriam, Antonia and Desiree; known in the media as ‘Las niñas de Alcasser.’ The Valencia High Court of Justice will decide if Miguel Ricart will be freed from Herrera de La Mancha Prison in Ciudad Real after studying his situation. He was going to be released in 2011, but thanks to the Parot Doctrine, this was postponed until 2023. However, the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg recently

MURDERED GIRLS: Killer may soon be released. decided to partially annul the Parot Doctrine which established that time reduced from a prison sentence for good conduct should be subtracted from the total sentence, not from the 30-year limit stated by Spanish law. The girls, aged between 14 and 15, disappeared on November 13, 1992, near a disco in Picassent. On the day they disappeared, they hitched

a lift with a local man who left them at a petrol station where they were seen getting into a white car. At the disco they had some drinks with a male friend. What happened later remains a mystery. After days searching a 20km radius, in January, the rains and winds unearthed a hand and a watch. It was obvious that the girls had been raped, beaten, tortured and murdered.

Brothel bombers detained SEVEN people have been arrested for planting a bomb at the Paradise brothel, in La Jonquera, last year. The Catalan regional police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, searched five premises in Girona and Barcelona. The men were located thanks to a bottle of inflammable liquid they used to burn the escape vehicle. After analysing the barcode, police found the shop where it was bought. The suspects had been caught on CCTV. Police believe they were hired to do the job. They were armed when they alerted the guard that they had planted a bomb. The brothel and nearby businesses were evacuated for safety. The mayor, Sonia Martinez, said that she plans to close the brothel down for good.

Scottish suspects in Yeremi disappearance TWO Scottish paedophiles serving prison sentences for murder and sexual assault are being questioned in connection with the disappearance of Yeremi Vargas. Charles O’Neill, 50, and William Lauchlan, 36, were living and working in Gran Canaria when seven-yearold Yeremi vanished from his home on March 10, 2007. They were reportedly in the Los Llanos neighbourhood of Vecindario around the time he disappeared. Guardia Civil said: “It’s not a tourist area you’d expect foreigners like them to be visiting.” The pair refused to speak to Guardia Civil last month and they are now being treated as suspects, as well as Ewan Wilson, who took the pair into his home after an earlier sentence.

SUSPECTS: Charles O’Neill and William Lauchlan. Wilson visited them in the resort of Maspalomas in the same month that Yeremi vanished. O’Neill and Lauchlan were jailed for life in 2010 for murdering Allison McGarrigle, 39, in 1997, to stop her from reporting the abuse of a young boy. In the 13 years between the murder and their convictions, they served jail time for sexual offences against children.

Yeremi’s mother Ithaisa Suarez told a British newspaper four years ago she suspected that the pair was behind her son’s abduction. Guardia Civil have released pictures of the suspects and are hoping for information from people who hired the services of Rainbow Cleaning Service S.L., run by the pair at the time, who may be able to reveal details.

After the trophy presentation Spectrum FM’s John Migan said a few words, highlighting the incredible work the RBL do for the servicemen and their dependents of yesteryear right up to the current day, plus their need for new members. This was followed by a raffle and an ‘Irish Auction,’ won by tournament organiser Josie Creasey. She immediately put the prize up for auction, raising another €210 towards the €2,300 total. The following night another fundraising event was held - a Gala Ball at The Oliva Nova Hotel with The Black Glitter Band. The Royal British Legion (Benidoleig Branch) sent their thanks to everyone who made this great weekend possible and such an overwhelming success; the sponsors and everyone who donated their time including Nurse Hazel Darcy, Matt Broad (Residencial Bon Retir, Javea), Vicente (Oliva Nova Golf), SQC Limos, John Migan (Spectrum FM) and Josie and Tony Creasey (RBL Benidoleig members). More than €5,000 was raised during the weekend. For more information on joining the RBL: Josie Creasey 674 621 114 or visit www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/benidoleig.

NEWS Demands for sexual assistants A GROUP of disabled people in Spain has raised the question of having trained assistants so they can have a sex life. The group, Sex Asistent Cataluña, is led by Jaume Girbau and includes disabled people, sexologists, therapists and advisers. They believe people should be trained to work directly with the disabled, to provide embraces, caresses, sensual massage, games and other options to allow them to discover their bodies, as well as helping couples. This is part of a campaign which started in northern Europe several years ago to promote the right of the disabled to a sex life. In Germany, Switzerland, Holland and Denmark, there are sexual assistants, some of whom are state funded. It is also being discussed in France.

Trains a strain Iberia losing out IBERIA was the third mostused airline in Spain in October, with 1.87 million passengers despite a 30 per cent drop in trade. This pushed Air Europa into fourth place although Iberia’s accumulated figure of 11.6 million passengers during the first 10 months of the year puts it down to fourth place overall. Low-cost airlines and the high speed train network were partially to blame for the 30 per cent drop in Iberia passengers between October 2012 and 2013, said airports’ operator AENA. The third factor was Iberia’s restructure since merging with BA in January 2011 to create IAG. Cost-

cutting measures have entailed a 15 per cent reduction in Iberian’s routes in a move to return the airline to profits. Adding Iberia Express and Air Nostrum passengers to the equation would increase Iberia’s October quota to 2.2 million and also put it ahead of IAG in second place. Although Ryanair lost 4 per cent of its passengers in October, it still remained in the top spot with almost 3.2 million passengers. The low-cost Irish airline has lost passengers throughout the year, AENA said, owing to its decision to reduce routes owing to higher airport charges.

Don’t call me Scrooge, but… Loose change

If you’re broke, you’re broke.

A look at finance for females

Jane Plunkett jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com

IT feels like I’ve just cleansed the cobwebs off my face from Halloween, but as I strolled through the streets this week despite the warm sun there was a real feel of Christmas in the air. Shop assistants were busy decorating windows and putting up fairy lights, while adverts are

strategically putting ideas in our heads of presents we should buy.

“Oh no, ho ho ho!” is about as much festive spirit as I could muster up. After paying for the mortgage, various loans, the electricity, flights back to home for Christmas as well as an array of other unforeseen costs, my Christmas piggy bank savings are at an all time low. Right now - at the most expensive time of the year - I’m broke!

What if community has no legal existence? Q. We live in a community of 12 houses. In 1997 our community was registered by the original builder in a very simple way, providing for the maintenance of the common elements. This registration was handwritten, with an official book of the minutes of the meetings. This book was never used and has been lost. Statutes were never made and community rules now are limited to the use of the pool. Up to now we never had any problem. But recently some houses were sold and new owners of different You and the nationalities have moved in. So my Law in Spain question is: What is the legal status By David Searl of our community? G B (by e-mail) A. In strict terms, your community has no legal status at all and its decisions have no legal force. A handwritten piece of paper does not constitute registration. However, you do have statutes. If a Community of Property Owners does not make any special statutes, they are by law governed by the terms of the Law of Horizontal Property. Second, it is possible that your builder registered the community at your nearest Property Registry. Communities are registered in a special section here because they own property. Your pool, for example, is owned by the community. So, you may be registered without knowing it. In addition, Spanish courts have in many cases accepted the legal existence of such informal communities because of their continued functioning. Your best course of action is to instruct a lawyer experienced in Community

affairs to help form a legal Community with powers to compel payment of fees.

Send your questions for David Searl through lawyers Ubeda-Retana & Associates in Fuengirola at Ask@lawtaxspain.com, or call 952-667090

Am I a total Scrooge if I suggest a ‘Cheap Christmas’ to my family? Or will they be thinking, ‘I like the idea of that, I’m smashed too!’ This is the thing about Christmas, while it is a fun time where all the family gets together and eats and drinks their hearts out, it’s also a time of the year that makes people feel really stressed and feel guilty too. If your brother gets you the latest iPhone, but you only get him socks, it’s mortifying. It’s a minefield deciding how much to spend on each other and no one wants to underspend, so that’s why we often spend more

than intended - for fear of looking cheap. But if you’re broke, you’re broke. That’s the reality of the situation and considering the financial mess the world is in right now, you can be guaranteed that many family members are feeling the same pinch. So go ahead - set down some ground rules to make Christmas more affordable this year. Try presents just for the kids, or a Secret Santa type of idea where 50 quid is spent on one nice present for one member of the family. As long as there are mince pies and a log fire a ‘Cheap Christmas’ sounds just perfect.

Eating habits are changing SPAIN’S ready-meals segment is expected to grow by 3.4 per cent a year in value terms between 2012 and 2017, making it the third-fastest growing category among food sectors. The forecast was made in a new report issued by UKbased consumer market research company Canadean. The expected rise has been attributed to a change in the eating habits of Spanish consumers, who are shifting to prepared meals instead of eating out. The report also noted that Spain has been reeling under the impact of challenging economic conditions, with uncertainties surrounding the euro having further affected consumer spending.

DIJSSELBLOEM: Welcomed decision.

Spain’s clean exit from bank bailout

FINANCE ministers from Eurozone countries have given their vote of confidence to Spain after it elected to make a ‘clean break’ from a bank bailout programme. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, President of the EU’s Eurogroup, welcomed Spain’s decision to exit the aid programme in January 2014. Spain will be joining Ireland in making a clean break. Spain dipped into the bailout fund to the tune of €41bn in 2012 to recapitalise banks after the property market crashed. Speaking after a meeting of the group of finance ministers Mr Dijsselbloem said: “Both countries have always shown strong commitment towards the implementation of their programmes. “This has shown results, as the recent developments on the financial markets have shown. The Irish and Spanish people have gone through a difficult period, but I am now confident that their efforts will pay off in the coming years. Now these economies are back on the road to recovery. “We fully support Spain’s decision to exit the programme. Spanish banks are now stronger, more resilient and supervision and regulation have been tightened.

SPANISH drinks producer Torres has announced plans to release a new cava in 2015 as it looks to launch a range of wines in the next five years, reports the UK’s Drinks Business Review. The company’s move is aimed at producing a niche, premium cava with initial output of less than 5,000 cases per year. Torres said the new wine, a blend of international and local grape varieties, will be targeted towards the Chinese market.

Dia success THE Iberian peninsula has been one of the worst affected eurozone markets, with headline retail sales dropping month after month. But there has been one genuine success story over the past two years - Dia, a hard discounter that became an independent company in 2011 after being spun off by Carrefour.

OPINION & COMMENT

Reputation as probably the worst company in Spain! TELEFONICA/MOVISTAR must surely be living up to their reputation as probably the worst company in Spain - yes worse than power company Sevillana/Endesa! Their incompetence and that of their operators is world breakingly above others. The new automatic answering system has taken a turn for the worse, if that was possible. If you don’t press the right button or say the right word it just cuts out on you. If you are lucky you may eventually get to speak to an equally confusing non electric person! I reported a fault on my business phone number. We could not receive or make calls, yet if someone phoned in they could hear the phone ringing. The fault was reported but nothing was done, so I called again. This time what appeared to be an intelligent person took details of my fault - again. When I asked if they could divert incoming calls to my mobile she gave me a code - to put in to my failed phone. I did explain that as the phone was not working it would seem to be a pointless and useless exercise. Could you not do it from the central exchange I asked? No. Why not? Because I am unable to. Can I speak to your superior? No. I had the same argument the following morning having had no contact from the technical department. Later the same day I phoned yet again - this time a very helpful lady arranged the divert in three minutes. No wonder they keep all their operators in Chile or South America. It wouldn’t be safe for them to walk the streets of Madrid. Gary Waite (by email)

I took a photo of this stunning seascape at Aqua Amargo. By Robyn Boutilier, Turre (Almeria) considering a dog tax (Costa del Sol Issue 1479). There is an easy and fair way of doing this. Nationwide licences. If licences were to be introduced here the revenue from them would more than pay for the employment of dog wardens and possibly pay for dogs homes rather than be dependent on charity. Maybe the rest of us would not have to suffer the incessant barking of so many dogs. If owners can not afford a licence, how can they afford the expensive food these animals must have? Mrs J Hollowell, Arroyo de la Miel (Malaga)

a scary situation. But multiply that by 100 and we can get an idea of what those people went through. Mother Nature can indeed be a harsh mistress. My prayers are with the people in the Pacific. Mrs Joan Clinton, Palma (Mallorca)

Silly rules RE the story about communities of residents in Mijas (Costa del Sol, Issue 1480) wanting to raise a petition against the enforcement of swimming pool

legislation on older properties. The communities do have a point. These regulations at times lack common sense. On my community the shallow toddlers’ paddling pool was filled in as it was ‘too near’ the main swimming pool. As a result there is nowhere for the toddlers to splash around in except the main pool, which is of course much deeper, and as a result much more dangerous. So the ‘safety’ regulations have resulted in an increased danger for young children. The law of unintended consequences in operation, with no common sense applied. Madeline Montague, Mijas Costa (Malaga)

bailed out by the taxpayer? Well it is nearly the festive season. I expect turkeys have already started casting their votes for Christmas! Steve Morris, Altea (Alicante)

No right... IT certainly seems that the issue over green waste has taken on a degree of momentum. It is positive that CLARO has taken up the issue supported by the Popular Party. The responses of the mayor to the legitimate concerns of Orihuela Costa residents who are forced to live in a dirty, poorly maintained area were insulting to every person living on the coast. There are no recycling services provided on the coast. There is no site where green waste can be deposited by the residents of the coast. To blame the inhabitants for a blatant lack of a garden waste disposal system by a councillor from the Green Party is beyond believe. The reaction of the councillors sitting 30 kilometres away in Orihuela to the disgusting state of Orihuela Costa just proves that these people have no right to have any control over the coast. The sooner Orihuela Costa gains its rightful independence the better! Liz Page (by email)

Lunch date In reply to the letter (EWN Issue 1480 ), sorry Olivia Qualtrough, but in reality you are the person who is ‘naive and ignorant.’ I have been a practising naturist for more than 20 years and I have never, ever, sat naked on any restaurant seat nor have I ever seen any other naturist do so. The etiquette is to always to take a towel and use it. The same goes for beach beds, sauna seats, etc. In fact, just so you can be more informed in future, I invite you to join me for lunch at a chiringuito (beach bar) on the naturist beach here at Vera Playa. No dress code - just a towel! Chris Thomas, Vera Playa (Almeria)

A true deep Royal romance... LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

BIT of a ‘told you so’ blurb this week. Normally I hate trumpet blowers, but I’m not averse to a little input on occasions. Firstly, some years ago, during the vilification of Prince Charles over his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, I predicted one day their affair could turn out to be one of the great Royal love affairs in British history. I think the couple, who are obviously deeply in love, have come through the whole saga with dignity and a new, thoroughly deserved respect. Camilla is far more suited to him than Diana, who, with all due respect, was nothing more than a somewhat flaky, manipulative star-struck clothes horse; one who Charles was bundled into marrying merely to produce an heir to the throne. Camilla not only ‘looks right’ at his side, but with her somewhat zany views and slightly off the wall projects, totally fits in with Charles ‘talking to

plants’ and environmental attitudes. I wish them both all the very best and a large dose of happiness in their life journey together. The second ‘trumpet call’ hits a somewhat sourer note. I’ve actually lost count of the times over the past 15 years or so I’ve taken a leaf from Enoch Powell’s book and predicted this whole immigration fiasco would finally lead to rioting and bloodshed on the streets. The latest statement from David Blunkett does, I think, finally exonerate me from all who accused me of

‘ranting’ and ‘scaremongering.’ Mr Blunkett’s comments, that the influx of thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands of Eastern Europeans, with their poor living standards and alien cultures, could lead to violence on the streets of Britain, is no doubt a welcome and sane observation, but too late. Even now there has been a deafening silence from most other leading politicians on the subject. It’s no good waiting for many British suburbs to resemble Syria or Beirut before they clamour to air their views on the nation’s media. In less than two months hoards of these people will pour into an already beleaguered Britain. They will have nowhere to live. No money and no jobs. What on earth is Britain Camilla and going to do with them all? Charles - one of Don’t ask me, I’m only an old the great Royal hack, one hit wonder from way love affairs. back. I’ll tell you something mind, Britain had better gird her loins for an unprecedented rise in crime rates, hoards of beggars littering the streets, a capitulation of the NHS and benefits infrastructure and unparalleled rioting on the streets of Britain, and all down to incompetent politicians that have well and truly shafted the British public. Keep the faith. Love Leapy. leapylee2002@gmail.com

LEAPY LETTERS

Muslim allies IT is very wrong of ‘Leapy Lee’ to ridicule the Burka as a way of dress. Although I agree there are situations where it is totally inappropriate, this is the fault of incompetent politicians and there is no reason why it should cause offence in normal everyday multicultural life. He is additionally very wrong to comment as to why one does not see remembrance poppies worn on a Burka. Many of those Muslim women must carry, in their hearts, memories of their loved ones - the older ones their husbands and brothers, the younger ones their grandfathers who died fighting in WW2, alongside British soldiers in the Western Desert, Burma and Italy. So, please Leapy, do try to be more objective. Brian Nicholls (by email)

T seldom occurs to career politicians that figures who convince inside the party do not necessarily cut it with the public. Neither do they grasp that elections are easier to win if party favourites are family favourites. Even committed PSOE supporters and those owing him their jobs agree that Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba should not lead the party into the 2015 general elections. The man who took the PSOE to two crushing defeats in 2011 is therefore unlikely to put himself through the coconut-shy of primaries despite a rapturous reception at the PSOE’s recent Political Conference. Brave new policies and a brave new PSOE were euphorically applauded, encouraging Rubalcaba and party grandees to delay naming the evil day, a.k.a. the primaries, as long as possible. They are talking about summer 2014 or even autumn, waiting to evaluate the party’s showing in next May’s European elections. If the party wants to see itself in phoenix-mode it needs primaries as soon as possible. Rubalcaba

Speaking volumes WAS it a deliberate snub? There was a governmentshaped hole at the recent presentation of Jose Maria Aznar’s second volume of memoirs. It was very different at the first volume’s launch attended by Rajoy and several ministers a year ago. Their absence is unsurprising. Relations between the government and Aznar tensed last May when the ex-president criticised the economic policies of the man he appointed as his successor. He has ‘taken note’ of the latest absences, Aznar remarked.

allowances to study abroad in mid-course brought down government wrath on his head. He was one of Rajoy’s most trusted assessors, which recalls the saying about “those who can, do, and those who can’t, teach.” In Wert’s case those who can’t, assess. And they make an unholy mess when they try putting what they preach into practice.

Still remembered “I LEFT the Fine Arts School in Calle de Alcala 13 and everybody was talking about it outside. Someone had a transistor and we stopped to listen.” It’s neither myth nor cliché. Everyone, like the Madrid art student now aged 71, remembers where they were on November 22 1963 when John Kennedy was shot.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) A strong and exciting romantic feeling flows through the week, which is fitting as Valentine's Day comes round again next month. Someone returning from a trip makes you smile and boosts your spirit. People who have been a little bossy finally realise that you will not rise to the bait. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) It's a better week for travel with less likelihood of delays. Should you be feeling a little lethargic and sorry about recent events, just count your blessings. Consider raising some money and having fun by indulging in a garage or car boot sale. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Spirituality seeps right through the week. As you are feeling particularly sensuous, invite someone special to dinner or on a trip. Visit garden centres and plan ahead. The colours and perfumes will be particularly pleasing. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Satisfaction with your love life is paramount this week, and the opinion of others seems important to you. Perhaps you are looking for an excuse to make a change. It is possible that a change is not required so much as a different approach. It is not essential to put all your eggs in one basket. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) A conversation with a colleague brings insights into how others live and it is quite an eye-opener. Friendships are particularly important this week. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) There is something in you that needs a creative outlet. Perhaps you would like to write a book: memoirs, for instance, take up a craft or paint.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Being very much in demand for your talents this week means less time to spend socially, so it's important to make time for loved ones at the weekend. Someone seeking your advice may simply be seeking your approval for an action they are going to take anyway. .

LEO (July 24 - August 23) This is a week when progress is fast and plans run ahead. Try new ideas and seek information to hone your knowledge. An organisation that is new to you offers insight and social involvement. An offer that thrusts you into the limelight might be avoided at first but would be to your advantage.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Having suffered a bit of a setback last week, you may be feeling less confident. Revving up your social life will certainly help to bring spirits up again. Be with people who liven or inspire you in some way.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) There may be some opposition to your ideas as Pluto turns this week. Perhaps your natural charm just doesn't seem to be working. As you have helped others in the past, make it clear that you expect a bit of cooperation.

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Although you have perhaps been looking to money-making ideas to progress finances, think also of alternatives. Perhaps there are areas of your lifestyle where money could be saved. Items that are not used could be sold for a profit and rid you of clutter.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Thoughts come to you, perhaps in dreams, that are creative and energy boosting. Someone who recently moved out of your sphere is sadly missed but is in some ways still a part of you. A person at work who has been causing you concern needs investigation.

A mobile cart with a two-way video screen and medical observance instrumentality could help when doctors are not available. These robots would also patrol hospital hallways checking on patients’ vital constants. 1 2. Flu-diagnosis chip Developed by a group of researchers from Boston University, Harvard and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, this disposable chip produces results faster than current flu-diagnosis tests at only $10 (€7.40) each. 3. Electronic ‘aspirin’ This patient-powered tool blocks the neurotransmitters related to chronic forms of headache. Patients only have to place a handheld remote control on their cheek after having implanted a nerve stimulating device in the upper gum of the side most affected by headache. 4. A SERIES of 20 crime novels, called the ‘Varigo Series,’ is now available. Centred on a Spanish village, the series expands to include crime, corruption and redemption in many locations. The books feature the world’s first healer/sleuth ‘Jesus El Curandero’. They are fastpaced and humorous, based around Spanish customs and history. As well as the unusual protagonist, the use of real

events, which have been fictionalised but still hold an authentic flavour, makes the series that bit different. Plus the care and insight the author S H Villa uses to explore the psychology of the characters. The main characters in the books evolve in the course of the series and their journeys become part of the crime stories. For this reason the series is numbered and best

appreciated when read in order. All books are available to order via Amazon’s websites in Europe and the United States.

Nowadays a life without electronic devices is hard to imagine. From washing machines and TVs to smartphones and tablet PCs they have become part of every day life. But which electronic device couldn’t you live without? And why? THERAPIST Ana Ivars, aged 39, from Benissa, considers that only a few decades ago people lived perfectly with no washing machine, no electric iron and she can always use old systems. “My mobile phone is not necessary either.” She adds: “The only electronic device I cannot live without is Magnetic Resonance Imaging scanner (MRI) because in my profession it is very important to detect health problems to treat them correctly.” Aiden Finney, a 40-year-old sales executive from Altea, has

I speak to all my friends on Skype, I use it for banking and also for Googling information to prove my husband wrong!” Ariele Lara, a 23-year-old, law student from Malaga couldn’t live without his smartphone. “I enjoy being connected to everyone I love and now thanks to the advancements in technology you can send messages and chat with your friends on different

Taking pictures and uploading them to any of your social networks, synchronizing your calendar activities so you can organise everything you have to do… The possibilities are endless and I just couldn’t imagine being without it even though we have only had this technology for about five years.” Celia Perez - 31, a therapist from Fuengirola (Malaga) loves her iPad. “I use it daily to manage my bank accounts and also for editing pictures for the website I own. I find it easier to carry than a regular laptop, I can take it anywhere with me in my purse and I don’t even notice it’s there. Since it has 3G wireless connection, it allows me to log on to the internet at any time and any place. Everything is easy.” Celia Perez.

Counselling really can help! Alexis James - Crabb BA.BEd. PERSONAL fear in the face of the future is powerful. It is a personal fear or ambivalence many of us might share. What do we anticipate? What have we already experienced through our relations with parents, grandparents and others? Do we feel we have the resources to cope well enough with what is to ‘come?’ Many people, young or old feel uncertain, even nervous, about the idea of sitting down with a counsellor to talk about themselves. The issues of older and younger clients are often similar with only essential differences. Issues from the past that remain unresolved, so we go on carrying them forward, often to become heavy burdens resulting in ill health. As years pass from childhood to old age, there are always new and unique challenges, new relationships and situations. ‘Life does not stand still!’ We either meet and engage with life or seek to avoid ‘reality!’

NO FEAR: Counselling can help you move forward. During our lifetime, we may be confronted with changes in role and identity, causing an enforced change. The impact of ill health and disability, bereavement, breakdown of relationships, loss of work affecting our income and status can occur at any time. What is the TV advert message?

“I am a crisis and I do not care who you are!” Friends and family are a valuable support but generally give advice based on their perspective of the world. “What do you want?” Counselling is not an easy option; sometimes it takes ‘real courage’ to help yourself. But the advantage of choosing to talk with an independent counsellor is that whatever you have discussed or disclosed does not come back to haunt you later in a family situation, within your circle of friends or your local community. This may be one of the most difficult times in your life! An experienced counsellor has the skill to help you make the decisions that ‘you choose’ to move forward for your future happiness and fulfilment. If you have issues in your life preventing inner peace and maybe, causing stress and ill health Contact: Alex 966 497 796 or 652 517 949. alex@ambiencetherapies.com www.counsellingcostablanca.com

Order a pizza by just pressing a button AMERICAN tech company iStrategyLabs is developing the ultimate food appliance: an emergency pizza button. PiePal can memorise up to five different pizza combinations that can be ordered with just one push. For the time being, it can only place orders to Domino’s Pizza. This is so because the website of the international pizza chain reportedly offers the best ordering structure available. As it’s still in development, PiePal is not ready yet to be launched on the market. People at iStrategyLabs are currently working on adding protection to avoid pizzas from being ordered by accident. The company offers anyone to become a beta ‘taster’ of the device by signing up on their website. Unfortunately, this tasty possibility is only available for people living in the US.

Chocolate chip cookies, a delicious accident tCHOCOLATE chip cookies are a delicious and world known snack, but not everyone knows they were originally a culinary accident. American Ruth Graves Wakefield is said to have accidentally made the first-ever chocolate chip cookies in her restaurant, The Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. In the 1930s, after running out of baker’s chocolate while making

chocolate cookies, Wakefield decided to use pieces from a Nestle chocolate bar. But instead of melting, the chocolate maintained its shape, giving birth to the popular biscuit. Wakefield published the recipe in her cookbook Toll House Tried and True Recipes, and it rapidly became a baking favourite. Rumour has it that she sold the recipe to Nestle

A real shortage of almonds ALMOND shortages in America and across Europe are affecting chocoholics as some retailers report a shortage of almond chocolate bars. Retailers say they have seen the demand for Green & Black’s Organic Chocolate and Almond bar outstrip

supply in recent weeks. UK supermarket chain Waitrose has already sold out. California grows around 80 per cent of the world’s almonds and the harvest has suffered this year due to a prolonged drought. Spanish and Italian crops are also expected to run out soon.

Robotic restaurant in China A RESTAURANT in China has replaced its waiters with robots that cook, serve and attend to customers. Robot Restaurant, in the city of Harbin, has a workforce of 20 robots that tirelessly work for five hours. After that they need two hours to recharge their batteries. But they seem to be very efficient as they make noodles, fry or steam-dumplings and bring the food to the tables running along tracks on the floor. The only humans in the restaurant, apart from customers, are the kitchen supervisors. The restaurant opened in the summer of 2012 and ever since has been popular with customers.

Health in the herb garden The perennials such as lavender, rosemary, thyme, chives, bay, sage etc. are naturalised Spanish plants and easily established, also frost and draught resistant. Annual herbs such as basil, parsley and dill are easy to care for in semi shaded positions. They can be regularly

trimmed for using in salads, cooked dishes and healthy infusions. Planted along paths, within mixed flower beds, on a rockery or in a dedicated herb garden their leaves and flowers add perfume to the garden, which in turn attract many species of butterflies. Herbs can be harvested for hanging in bunches or mixing into potpourris to provide natural aromatherapy effects. a quick acting gardener’s remedy, as is a comfrey poultice. What other type of garden plants can be of so much benefit for a relatively little outlay! If you have a mountainside or woodland full of naturally

growing herbs you have a head start on others! Part Four of our book ‘Your Garden in Spain’ describes and illustrates the most popular 25 herb plants. Many can be easily propagated at almost any time of the year to increase your number of plants inexpensively or as gifts for friends. Success only requires fertile, free draining, gritty, non-clayey soils and potting composts, with regular watering of perennials until established and daily summer watering of herbs in containers, and a regular trim to stop them becoming leggy and woody. Herbs such as mint and the scarlet flowered pineapple sage spread quickly, so plant them where you are happy for them to expand or in containers in the ground or on the terrace. The Chiltern Seeds catalogue (info@ chilternseeds.co.uk) lists many varieties of herbs not normally found in garden centres in Spain.

Fighting winter blues with practical, efficient yet simple Neater Heaters WITH the cold weather now upon us, many people will be looking for the best way to keep their homes warm. The choices seem endless, confusing, and contradictory. There is no simple answer, or single best solution. Tony and Richard at Neater Heater have, however, got one solution that deserves serious consideration. There are many reasons to choose electricity as your heating option. It is clean, requires no effort to maintain, and has a comparatively small installation cost. In fact, Tony and Richard claim to be able to install a five to seven heater system for the same price that many people pay just to have a housing built for their gas bottle. But once you have decided on electricity then you have even more choices to contend with. The Neater Heater team

After discarding the unhealthy Gas ‘estufas’, and going for ‘Heat Electric’ they tried various options - as customers - and realised one thing. There were no affordable good electric heaters on the

market. Electric heaters tended to fall into one of the following categories. • Very expensive (€400€800) but make a virtue of being economical, • Cheap to buy (but horrendously expensive to run) oil-filled heaters,

While looking for a heater for his son’s room, Tony came across, and installed, some Norwegian BEHA convector heaters. That decision was lifechanging.

Discovering just how good these heaters were, Tony saw a business opportunity and approached his friend Richard Winter and between them they started Neater Heater. As Richard explains; “The beauty about Neater Heaters is that they are simple but are built to the highest quality. It also helps that they look good. “They use modern, state of the art technology, such as extruded aluminium for the element, and a highly sensitive thermostat. This produces an affordable no-nonsense heater that works efficiently and economically to keep your home warm through those long cold winter nights.” For more information email: info@neaterheater.es web:www.neaterheater.es Tel: 634 312 171

Top qualities for room-mate THE most requested qualities of a room-mate are to be respectful, clean and sociable. These are what most people are looking for when searching for an ideal roommate, according to a study by Easypiso, a website dedicated to house sharing. The main problems in house shares are cleaning issues, with 61 per cent saying that accumulating dirt and rubbish in the shared, communal areas is a big problem, followed by privacy (40 per cent) and relationships (29 per cent). However, house sharing does

have some benefits, 40 per cent said they became more organised and tidy as a result of sharing. The average cost of rent in Spain for shared accommodation reached its peak in April and May at €275 per month. This fell to €250 in August and September when there was a greater supply than demand and in October it reached an average €260. The most in demand cities according to Easypiso are Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Alicante and Malaga.

EW people question the need for having decent home insurance. Ironically, when it comes to travel insurance, it’s often a different story. Far too many Brits still travel abroad without taking out travel cover, oblivious to the eye-watering costs they could face if things go wrong. Having to cut your trip short for a family funeral, or ending up in a foreign hospital due to illness are just some of the misfortunes that can happen on holiday. Travel insurance is there to protect you against these, and a host of other holiday mishaps. But what can you do to protect your home while you’re away on your travels? It is a worry, especially around Christmas, when burglars are on the look-out for soft targets. By taking a few straightforward steps, however, you can minimise the risk of a break-in, leaving you to get on with

PROTECT YOUR HOME: Make sure you take all necessary precautions. enjoying your travels. Start by cancelling any regular deliveries, and arranging for the post office to hold onto your mail until you get back from holiday. Be discreet when you’re discussing your travel plans. Don’t mention details or dates where other people are likely to overhear the conversation. Don’t close the curtains in an attempt to make your home seem less tempting: if anything, it’s likely

to do the opposite. Instead, move any desirables (car keys, for instance) out of sight, and fit timer switches on lights and radios. It’s not rocket science but it will send out ‘at home’ signals to casual observers and help deter opportunists. Don’t leave a spare key in that crafty cache that only you know about - for reasons that should be pretty obvious! If you can, leave a key with a neighbour or

a friend, someone who can clear away tell-tale piles of junk mail and perhaps even park their car out front. Your neighbours may keep themselves to themselves, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t share your departure and return dates with them. Far from feeling you’re imposing, they’ll probably appreciate the chance to be helpful - and no one’s more likely to spot suspicious goings-on in your absence. With identity theft on the rise, it’s wise to leave important documents with friends, or in a bank safe if you have one. And, finally, why not take snapshots of any items of special value, preferably in their normal surroundings; it could be useful, if you are unlucky enough to fall victim to burglary. SEAT’s very first car is 60 SEAT recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the 1400, the Spanish automotive manufacturer’s first ever car. In 1953, three years after the company was established, a high end car based on American models of the day rolled off the assembly lines at Barcelona’s Zona Franca. SEAT has built more than 16 million vehicles, including emblematic models like the 600 and the Ibiza. The choice of the 1400 sedan as an initial model was a response to government officials needing transport. At the same time, this model was a very suitable car for use as a taxi. At an ex-works price of 121,875 pesetas (the equivalent of €41,735), initial production was five cars a day, built by a workforce of 925. In 1956 production grew to 7,000 vehicles, with practically 100 per cent of components being manufactured domestically. 10,000 units were built the following year, at the rate of 42 units per day. After two years, SEAT was employing 5,000 people. Production of the 1400 discontinued in 1964, after selling more than 98,000 units.

International Sports MEDAL COMPETITION: Winners at Alenda.

Montgo Golf

MONTGO Golf Society played the second of the two round medal competition for the Monto Golf Society Decanter sponsored by Neil and Marian Carter at Alenda on Friday November 15. In the first round played at Oliva Nova the week previous there were some very low scores in summer conditions. Very different weather prevailed at

Alenda with a strong gusting, cold wind that saw scores over 10 shots higher. Best round of the day came from Gerian van Ooijen with a net 76 for an aggregate score of 145, but this was not enough to overhaul first round leader, Sabrina Vincke who posted a second round of 79 to go with the 63 from Oliva to take the trophy by three shots.

A former football player and the world’s most prolific author of football books (more than 100 published), Tony is also the sports reporter for Spectrum Radio and lives in the Cabrera mountains.

LADIES TEAM: The women had a better result, winning 17-10.

La Vila loses against Barcelona, 17-20 JUST three points separated FC Barcelona and La Vila on Saturday November 16, the match ending 20-17 in favour of the home side. As the scoreline suggests, it was a tight game that could have gone either way, with FC Barcelona proving to be a dangerous side who competed for the full 80 minutes. La Vila did manage to score two tries through centres Tom Ramson and Javier Carrion, both converted by Nacho Luque who also added a penalty. The away side will be disappointed to miss out on the four points they could have gained by

winning the match, but at least took away a defensive bonus point to add to their tally. With this result, La Vila are third in the table just two points behind the top spot, currently occupied by El San Cugat de Barcelona. There were better results for the club at the Pantano ground on Sunday November 17 with the ladies team fighting back to win after conceding a try in the opening minutes, their final score 17-10. Following the ladies, the La Vila B team took on Denia, easing to a comfortable 33-10 home victory.
