A right royal visit
Relaxed holiday for heir to throne
THE Prince and Princess of Asturias accompanied by their daughters spent the long holiday weekend in Almeria Province. For their stay they chose a chalet in the coastal town of Agua Amarga in the Cabo de Gata. After having lunch at a restaurant in the Isleta de Moro, the family moved on to the town of Nijar early on Saturday afternoon. Without bodyguards, like typical tourists, the royal family passed through the streets of the town, stopping at typical stores selling rugs and ceramics and greeted all those who wanted to speak to them. News spread fast through the town of the unexpected royal visitors and it was the town’s residents who notified the mayor of their presence as crowds of people stopped to say hello. The mayor later thanked the royals for choosing his town to visit, calling it important for Nijar. The royal family later moved on to Mojacar, visiting the

old town and dining at La Taberna restaurant, according to sources. On Sunday, the family stopped off in
Tabernas to visit Sir Ridley Scott on the set of the movie Exodus, before heading home to Madrid.
British man in paragliding accident A BRITISH man, aged 72, had to be rescued on Saturday afternoon after crashing while practising paragliding in an area of the Sierra Alhamilla.
The accident happened about five kilometres from the town of Pechina and very close to the sets made for the film Exodus. Several calls were made to
alert the 112 emergency services of the incident, one of them from the Guardia Civil and another from an off-duty firefighter. The paraglider was finally rescued by
a number of individuals who were in the area and managed to move him safely to an ambulance, which took him to Torrecardenas Hospital.

A WALKING route following an ancient pilgrimage way has been publicised at a special event. The route goes from Almeria City all the way to Santiago de Compostela in the north of Spain. The day was aimed at mayors and councillors from the 15 municipalities through which the
path passes and also members of the rural development group of the Sierra Nevada of Almeria. The participants gathered at Plaza Vieja in Almeria City early yesterday morning to publicise the walk known as the Mozarabe de Santiago. They received an overview of the Camino de Santiago
in Almeria. They then moved to Cathedral Square, where the starting point of the route in Almeria has been established. The group travelled on foot through the city and made the rest of the journey by car. The Mozarabe route was used by Christians during the Arab rule.

Festival to celebrate ‘firewater’
HE 22nd edition of the Fiesta del Orujo will be held in Potes, Cantabria, from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday. This year, the ‘Orujero Mayor’, the patron of the festival, will be Cantabria-born actor Eduardo Noriega. Orujo is a strong liquor made in Northern Spain, obtained from the distillation of marc, the solid remains left after pressing the grapes. It is a transparent spirit with an alcohol content over 50 per cent (100 proof) and is also known as aguadente, or ‘firewater’. In Cantabria it is mainly made in the Liebana Valley where it has become an artisanal craft for some families who after making wine for themselves distil the pomace in a still. Young orujo is a colourless liquor, while aged orujo is amber. The aged variety is fermented and distilled the same way, but then poured into oak barrels to age for at least two years. Cantabria has been distilling orujo since the 14th century at least.

THE third edition of the Ruta de Tapa will be held in HuercalOvera from tomorrow (Friday) until November 17. This edition will involve a total of 22 establishments in which participants can try more than 40 different tapas. Mayor Domingo Fernandez and the area councillor, Monica Navarro, presented details of the event, which will include several new features. The first is that all participants who complete the tapas route will be entered into a draw to win a weekend trip to Mallorca on a half-board basis. Another innovation is the app that company Andriosfera has created for the route. It can be downloaded for Android via Google Play and Play Store. From there people can also vote for their favourite tapa and the bar with the best service.

Exodus film crew in rescue drama A TOTAL of 32 people working on the film Exodus were trapped in a ravine in Tabernas after a sudden rain and hail storm struck the area. The film crew were packing up for the day and collecting their
equipment when the heavens opened. The storm, although not quite of biblical proportions, was fierce enough to quickly fill the Rambla del Buho with water in the area close to Fort Bravo. According to sources
from the 112 emergency services, several calls were received from around 7pm, warning that seven vehicles were trapped. Guardia Civil agents and two fire engines were called to the scene to help rescue the
film crew. Reports indicated that all of them were safe and well and had experienced nothing more than a ‘fright’. The following day cars were still stuck in the mud in the middle of the rambla and recovery
trucks were needed to pull them out. However, just a few metres away, with a sunny day and good weather, the filming went on, with Christian Bale taking part, of an enormous battle involving hundreds of extras.

Almeria road movie opens to acclaim IN 1966, John Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields Forever in Almeria, where he had arrived to shoot the film How I Won The War. A few hours’ drive away, a teacher who taught English in Cartagena decided to visit the film-set to try to fulfil his dream of meeting the man who wrote the songs that served as teaching material. David Trueba relives this story in the movie Living Is Easy With Eyes Closed, a road movie shot in Almeria that has already received numerous accolades from critics, and opened this week in Spanish cinemas. The real-life experience of Javier Carrion, a teacher who is now over 90 years old, is told through Javier
Camara, an actor who was desribed as ‘perfect’ to play him. The teacher, accompanied by a young pregnant woman who escapes from a shelter, and a boy who runs away from home after refusing to cut his hair, are the three characters of the story, whose destiny is to meet John Lennon. Trueba emphasises the heroism of the three with conventional lives, claiming that everyday
stories are those that appeal and that, in his opinion, make a story into something interesting. “We need to vindicate ordinary people, because one day they will think that taking their children to school is not important,” he added. Camara said this is the best character of his acting life, despite starting shooting just three days after arriving from New York, leaving him very little time to rehearse.

A total of 531 fines handed out for driving offences MORE than 9,500 vehicles were checked by Guardia Civil officers in a recent road safety campaign by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) on secondary roads. The object of the campaign was to improve the awareness and behaviour
of motorists whilst driving on quieter roads which, although having less traffic, also present a greater danger. A total of 531 fines were handed out in the province, with speeding generating the most fines during the campaign.
People were also fined for overtaking in inappropriate places as well as the non-use of seat belts, which can often be the difference between life and death in a road accident. Other fines were issued to people
who had tested positive for drugs or alcohol. Offending motorists were also fined for using mobile phones or other gadgets in their vehicle including navigation systems whilst they were driving.
Questions over Gergal manhunt A MONTH has passed since a manhunt in Gergal after the murder of a woman, allegedly by her brother Juan Leon alias Cascapolos. The deputy minister in Almeria, Andres Garcia Lorca, has revealed the best kept secret. Juan Leon escaped from his mother’s house before the arrival of Guardia Civil agents who surrounded an empty house for 16 hours. Garcia Lorca was with the colonelin-chief of the Guardia Civil
in Almería, Francisco Jimenez, at a meeting with schools. When questioned about the incident by the Socialist Juan Carlos Perez Navas, the deputy clarified the events surrounding the escape of Juan Leon. “There isn’t any person who evades police encirclement. There are no magicians, simply a person who enters a home and while the neighbour alerts the Guardia Civil, does not see him coming out again,”
he explained. Jimenez, commented: “The cordon around the house was impossible to escape. The bottom line is that this man went out the same door he entered.” Juan Leon, 52, allegedly killed his sister and caused serious injury to two others on October 6. For three days he hid in the Sierra de los Filabres pursued by dozens of Guardia Civil agents by land and air before being arrested.

Protest march in Macael MORE than 2,000 people demonstrated in Macael this week against unemployment.
They were demanding the signing of an agreement with marble companies and an
employment plan for the region to combat the dramatic unemployment figures in the area. The rally that left from the town hall passed through several streets of the town finishing outside the headquarters of the marble businesses. There
followed a minute’s silence for the marble workers who have lost their lives in recent months and for the miners of Leon killed in an accident a few days ago. In the ceremony held at the end of the event, the secretary of Almeria Fecoma-CCOO Antonio
Rosal, explained the reasons that led to this event, blaming marble businesses for bad practices that they are maintaining at the negotiating table, and the loss of worker’s rights that are unacceptable and would set back the rights
of workers more than 30 years . The Secretary of MCAUGT Andalucia, Joaquin Barrera said workers in the area are not willing to lose their rights, and, he said, the proof was the large attendance at the meeting.
Factory planned for Taberno THE cooperative Caprina de Almeria, formed by La Pastora de Taberno y Filabres de Uleila del Campo is planning a new factory in Taberno. The project proposes to build the first factory in Andalucia to provide dehydrated goat’s milk. Also included are the cooperative’s Uniproca, Talavera de la Reina (Toledo) and the French company, Kerr France. The idea is still in the early
stages with the aim of processing 60 million litres of goat’s milk per year, a volume that would allow the most competitive prices. An estimate of the costs involved range between €600,000 minimum and a maximum €3 million. Cajamar, Unicaja and Bankinter banks participated at the preparatory finance meeting. The facility is planned on a site in Santopetar, on 35,000 square
metres of land bought by La Pastora from Taberno Town Hall and has an electrical transformer, water and road access. It also has a 1,700 square metre warehouse already built that could be used for stables. Taberno Mayor, Antonio Martos, explained that “this is a project that excites us very much since it will create, in principle, eight direct jobs and even more indirect jobs.”

Roma success from Garrucha COACH of the recordbreaking Roma football team, Rudi Garcia, may be French, but he has roots deep in Garrucha. Roma this season became the first team to win all of their first 10 league games in the Italian Serie A. His father Jose Garcia, and his paternal grandparents were born in Garrucha, and his mother, who still lives there, is of Mojacar descent although, born in France. Rudi has an aunt, several cousins and some more distant family members in the Garrucha
area. As a child he spent the summer in the town where his family owned a house with a large courtyard that Rudi had converted into a football field. He was always encouraged by his father, Jose Garcia, who was a professional footballer in the French second division. An injury led Rudi to quit football as a player while still young. In season 2010/2011 he achieved the French double with Lille and now it is the turn of Roma to benefit from the hard working Garruchero.

Witches whip up storm A COVEN of witches, better known as the ladies from FACE (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone) managed to conjure up a storm in more ways than one. They organised a quiz

Workshop to help educate charities A WORKSHOP for social workers, charities and community associations to learn about the problems British nationals face was held at the British Consulate. British Vice-Consul Rosslyn Crotty explained: “We are seeing
an increase in British citizens who are in desperate need of assistance following an illness or cash problems. “This is a growing concern. We want people to think about the future, speak to their families and
take steps to plan for the years ahead before it’s too late.” Difficulties facing British nationals include those who have received hospital treatment and are ready to be discharged but have no one to look after them,
people who desperately need residential care but are ineligible as they failed to register on the ‘padron’ municipal register and others who failed to register for social security cards and so are not covered by the Spanish NHS.
Fifty-five arrested in international anti car trafficking operation FIFTY-FIVE people have been arrested in Spain as part of an international operation against illicit car trafficking in the European Union. More than 3,000 Guardia Civil officers participated in the operation by increasing road tax controls at ports and vehicle checkpoints on the Spanish road network. Their presence at borders was also increased in order to detect and recover stolen cars. They co-operated with the French Gendarmerie and the Portuguese Republican Guard, and were co-ordinated by the European Police Office (Europol). More than 5,500 controls were carried out, with a total of 1,231 people and 4,301 vehicles identified.
VEHICLE CHECKPOINT: Controls increased during the operation. In Spain, the Guardia Civil recovered 56 stolen luxury cars and arrested 55 people of Moroccan, Spanish and Dutch nationalities.
The vehicles recovered were mainly from Spain, Italy, Belgium and Germany, and were being sold in Eastern Europe and Northern Africa.
There are also residents who find themselves homeless and have either lost their passports or allowed them to expire, and thus cannot get help from many support charities. The consulate and charity groups are warning British citizens who are resident in Spain that they must register on the padron at their local town halls in order to qualify for help from Social Services in the future. Anette Skou of the Foreigners Department in Mijas (Malaga) said: “In most cases where Social Services are powerless to help it is because the British nationals involved have not registered on the padron. We urge all British residents in Spain to register on the padron – you have nothing to lose.” The workshop was attended by the Royal British Legion, Red Cross, Age Concern, Age Care, Caritas, The Soroptomists, Lux Mundi and La Cala Diabetics Association, as well as social workers from across Malaga Province, all of whom come into contact with British residents on a daily basis.

Ninety per cent of the 800 polled claimed that safe driving is very important in their job, with only 25 per cent of them receiving guidelines from their employers to improve their driving. Energy-efficient driving, however, seems to be less relevant as almost a quarter of those polled did not consider it important. When asked about how their driving style was monitored, only 10 per cent of motorists said they had monitoring devices in their car. Sixty-one per cent claimed their performance was controlled through ‘observation’, Spain being the country where this type of control is more usual.

Right-wing teen hacker arrested A TORREVIEJA teenager has been arrested for sending death threats to journalists. The right-wing 19-year-old was detained by police within 48 hours after an investigation was launched into cyber attacks. During the last two weeks, various digital media have been subjected to constant attacks that have crippled their websites, affected their normal operations and resulted in the loss of an estimated €100,000. Agents from the Technological Research Unit of the National Police in Alicante were alerted to the hacker and arrested him at his home in Torrevieja, where they seized two laptops, hard drives, Nazi flags and fascist material. Operating under the name of ‘Cyber Command Spanish Fascist Empire’ he sent emails to several media outlets making bomb threats and threatening to kill journalists. Reportedly self-taught, the hacker used a series of networks to carry out a ‘distributed denial of service’ attack (DDOS), by simultaneously hitting a website with multiple requests for information until the site was overloaded and no longer accessible.

Cash wanted to restructure debt
KITCHEN appliance manufacturer Fagor Electrodomesticos needs €170 million to put it on its feet. The San Sebastian company is a cooperative and most of its workers are also partners in the firm. It is currently in voluntary talks with its creditors and has debts that some sources place at €800 million.
The company is “viable,” managing director Sergio Treviño told a Diario Vasco interviewer. But Fagor needs €170 million, he said, and needs it soon to restructure its debt and prevent a domino effect that could cause its collapse. Fagor Electrodomesticos has 5,600 employees worldwide, of whom 2,000 work in the company’s five Spanish factories.
Spain’s mining sector in decline FIREDAMP, the miner’s enemy, recently took six lives in Leon. Deadly methane gas released with the coal is rapid, silent and odourless. In the past the death of a caged canary was the only warning of firedamp’s presence, but the wellequipped miners in the Emilio del Valle pit found 694 metres were still vulnerable. Firedamp and Spain’s geologically-complex mining areas make its coal uncompetitive. Large quantities of methane in many mines in Leon and Asturias require heavy investment in maintenance and safety measures. The mining sector’s decline began in the
1960s and accelerated in the 1980s. At that time, 51,127 men were employed in Spain’s pits. Now there are fewer than 5,000. Between 1990 and 2012 the industry required €24 billion of public money, but Brussels has decreed that by 2018 only mines able to survive without government funding may remain open. Jobs will be cut to 4,500 and uncertainty regarding the future prompted last year’s miners’ strike and march on Madrid. Until then, the government has promised the unions that Spanish coal will generate 7 per cent of the output of the country’s power-stations.

Recovery in the UK gains momentum THE UK economy has been on a strengthening trend for the past few months thanks to improved economic data. The feel-good factor is contagious and is gathering pace across the entire spectrum of the economy. In yet another good report out in early October, optimism in the UK financial industry advanced to its strongest level in 17 years! This is extremely good news that will likely weigh on the Bank of England’s monetary policy direction in the form of forward guidance which focuses on keeping interest rates low for at least three years. The UK recovery has encouraged investors to speculate that the Bank of England will have to lift interest rates earlier than previously indicated. At the September meeting, Governor Mark Carney suggested that the

unemployment rate will have to drop below 7 per cent before a rate increase is considered. An increasing number of investors are betting that the Bank of England will have to raise interest rates earlier if the economy keeps overheating and the move higher in the pound certainly reflects this view. The activity in the UK property market is also contributing to the recovery and it seems that the UK Government wants to keep momentum going and the good news flowing, especially as we move closer towards the general election. It will be a long and complex process, requiring the legal dissolution of one Community and the creation of two new ones. Yes, you can remain as one Community, with some different regulations for each side of the road. If these rules do not involve changes in the original charter of the Community, a simple majority vote should suffice. If the Community has voted to accept smoking in the pool area, that is the rule. If someone wishes to change it, they can put forward a motion.

Urgent talks needed for late night music bars WHY do I get the impression that the Spanish authorities want to close pubs and restaurants down? In Calahonda’s El Zoco commercial centre (Mijas Costa, Malaga), to comply with regulations, the landlords are being told ‘no music must be heard.’ A lot of tourists use this complex as their holiday destination, mainly because of its music and late bars. There is no soundproofing in these old buildings and to make them legal would cost too much money. These pubs and restaurants rely on the terrace space as they can’t squeeze everyone into a small area with music playing. As a small business, if they want to thrive and make a living, they must give what the customers want. The authorities should have a meeting with all late night business owners and come to a compromise to keep these bars and restaurants open. These bars need to open to accommodate the people that go down to the beach for the sun all day. Night-time is when they spend money and enjoy the night-life. Let us keep the Costa del Sol a holiday destination and not an old persons’ retirement resort GKS (By email)
Inappropriate DB of Palma wants people to ‘cover up’ when out and about (Letters 1476). I really do not understand why people think it appropriate to insist on others wearing clothes when it is warm enough for clothing not to be required. The naked human body is no more offensive than the body of a hippopotamus. In my view, the vast majority of people have accepted brainwashing by the people who have control of the major religions of Europe and the Americas to believe that they should be offended by the sight of naked bodies.

A fine threat REGARDING your story about Alcoy Council threatening to fine people €750 for feeding stray cats (Costa Blanca North, Issue 1478). Perhaps a better way would be to fine owners for not neutering and spaying their cats instead of throwing them out when they become pregnant. Ticking off IN regard to the letter from Anthony Jones that prostitution should be made legal in Spain (Letters Issue 1478). It has not been illegal since 1995, when it was decriminalised. There are, however, restrictions imposed by some municipalities on where they can operate. Pimping is illegal, but operating a brothel is legal, although the owner cannot directly benefit from the prostitutes’ earnings. I wish readers would do a little research before putting pen to paper. Heart-warming DOES Mr Hunter really want to see Spain’s family life and the peace we have, sent into oblivion? Isn’t it heart-warming to see several generations of families all together eating/walking/ enjoying life on the one day they can be together? Did we not leave the UK to escape rampant commercialism of our lives among other things? We do not need seven-day trading if we organise our lives accordingly. Companies will employ extra staff? Doubtful, existing staff will be forced to work extra hours as has happened in the UK. Yes, Spain should modernise and keep up with the times, but it must not destroy what is holy and rare in today’s world - family life, peace and tranquillity on one day a week. Face facts WHILE the debate over global warming heats up, it’s surprising that many experts ignore one of the main causes of environmental degradation: runaway world population. In 1900, the world population was 1.6 billion; in 1950, there were 2.5 billion; in the year 2000, 6.7 billion; and the projection for the year 2050 is that there will be almost 12 billion human beings. The life expectancy in most developed countries is already well into the 80s, and the rest of the world will achieve this in due course. A human being lives an average of three generations (75 years or more). With only two births per couple, when my wife and I die we’ll have left behind 12 more beings on the planet. It’s not arithmetic, but geometric. The Earth cannot sustain such growth, especially if we all aspire to a ‘First World’ lifestyle. Confronting this inconvenient truth entails difficult moral, ethical and sociological problems, but if we continue to ignore them the consequences for humanity will be unimaginable. PAIN’S President Mariano Rajoy would doubtless have preferred to pretend that the US does not monitor Spain’s communications. The Spanish right now are concerned about surviving on a day-to-day domestic basis. Few are going to waste precious energy over working themselves into an outraged lather about 90 million eavesdropped communications. They left that to the media, which embraced the NSA scandal as a change of flavour after the usual StrasbourgBarcenas-Crisis fodder. The government reluctantly responded by summoning the US ambassador for an explanation while quavering about “erosion of trust.” The NSA subsequently claimed that Spain and France carried out the original eavesdropping before passing the information to the US.

Rajoy must be relieved he did not do a Dilma Rousseff and cancel a Washington visit. Although, unlike his Brazilian counterpart, he has yet to receive an invitation and is unlikely to do anything to spoil his chances of getting one.
Danger money SIX coalminers died in Leon, overcome by methane as they worked 694 metres below ground. These were the last in the inevitably long line of deaths that occur wherever men have to hack out coal to earn a living. The devastating blow to the families of the men who died is also another debilitating blow to Spain’s struggling coal industry. Miners went on strike and marched on Madrid last year to protest at reductions in subsidies and their future is still uncertain. The Leon deaths are a further reminder that however much a miner is paid he earns it. Very often with his life.

Right side of the law RAJOY prudently stayed away from the Madrid protest against the Court of Human Rights ruling on the Parot Doctrine. The Strasbourg ruling forced the government to backtrack on plans to make ETA convicts serve longer than their original sentences, to the dismay of victim support associations. No minister was present at the demonstration organised by the most vociferous groups although most

Used to turning out for anti-government demos in the Zapatero days, Esperanza Aguirre, Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, and others expected a warm welcome. To their surprise they got the bird, were booed and barracked. One of the associations, the AVT, called for the government to “reconsider” the Strasbourg decision. Rajoy knows there is nothing to reconsider because the government’s compliance is what living under rule of law means. Anything less reduces it to the same level as lawbreakers and terrorists.
Long-term terms THERE has never been a “life means life” sentence in Spain, although this is about to change. Some legal experts here have questioned whether this is wise or ethical as it eliminates the possibility of rehabilitation and prejudges its impossibility. Those used to the British system are happy enough to see it applied in some circumstances. How many people would feel easy at seeing Ian Brady on the street?

No one is born a racist LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT
BLACK OR WHITE: How racism can be passed on.

O child is born a racist. It is the world of adults that instils the idea that some of us may be different, or in some way unacceptable to others. To a child born in this 21st century, particularly in the West, it is perfectly normal for them to be surrounded by children of all creeds and ethnic backgrounds. Watch any group of children in creches or playgrounds and you will observe them all playing happily together, with no hint of favouritism or antagonism towards each other. So when does the ugly face of racial intolerance begin to manifest itself? Of course, a great deal of it is passed directly from the parents. Racist parents, constantly demonstrating intolerance of others, will sooner or later instil it into their own offspring. But I think in many cases it starts earlier than that and in my opinion, it is the media that must accept a lot of the blame. I think many of the children’s charities should sit down and have a rethink as to how they use the media to circulate their appeal campaigns. Day after day we are inundated with emaciated children, covered in flies with

Deadly bananas A BRITISH family had to evacuate their home after discovering dozens of venomous Brazilian wandering spiders in a bunch of bananas they had bought from a Sainsbury’s supermarket.
Jet-setting gator bulging eyes and inflated bellies. There are no watersheds to these appeals, so from a tender age little ones are constantly exposed to sights of the appalling living conditions and deprived suffering of children and babies. And 99 times out of 100 they are all black! Is it any wonder then that youngsters begin to observe each other differently? What makes it worse is that these children are, by the very state of their circumstances, also observed by these young minds to be inferior to those with full bellies, white parents and taps full of water. And how do the black tots react to this situation? Well to me it’s obvious. Firstly they must, after observing these images of deprived children, most of whom are the
same colour as themselves, begin to themselves feel in some way inferior. This must soon be taken over by any number of emotions. Jealousy, confusion, mistrust, anger and, above all, among both black and white, the previously unrealised fact that they are indeed not all the same. And there you have it. All the ingredients of future unrest and possible conflict. The birth of racism. What these charity groups can do about the situation, I have no idea. Perhaps the best plan of action would be a watershed to showing these images. At least it would prevent impressionable minds from becoming racists before they can speak. OT far from Costa shorelines lies the wreck of a once proud ocean liner. Was the MV Monte Rosa cursed by fate? The ship’s damnation was to dog every nautical league of its last voyage. Setting out from Japan in February 1954, its 1,276 passengers and crew had every reason to look forward to a pleasant voyage. Their ocean odyssey would be crowned by a homecoming to an England many had not seen for years. Passengers included military families of servicemen based in the Far East. Various were survivors of the Korean War. Among the wounded were veterans of the Battle of the Hook. Many were stretcher-carried up the gangways, The ‘Dukes’ from the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, outnumbered in battle by five to one, had taken honours but casualties, too. Sailing from Yokohama and Kure, the
ILL-FATED: MV Monte Rosa sank while being towed to Gibraltar. Monte Rosa’s passengers and crew were to endure the voyage from hell. Defects in the super liner’s propulsion system needed constant running repairs. The luckless liner spent more time wallowing helplessly in the Indian Ocean than sailing. The three-week anticipated passage to Port Said in Egypt took an excruciating eight weeks to accomplish. It must have brought great relief to all on board when Monte Rosa finally limped into Port Said. Now, only the Mediterranean lay between them and England.
Those aboard endured eight weeks of hell The liner had known far happier days. It had once cruised the sun-drenched Aegean, Ionian, Adriatic and other seas that make up the Mediterranean. However, that was before the 1939-1945 World War.
From 1930 to 1945, the 13,882-tonne liner had been one of Germany’s fleet of super liners. Built by Hamburg shipbuilders Bohm and Voss the Monte Rosa was one of five sister-ships. Under the Kraft Durche Freude (Strength through Joy) leisure scheme Monte Rosa was to later provide German workers and their families the opportunity to take cruises that were previously the preserve of the elite. During the war the liner was used as a troopship. Departing the Egyptian port, the ill-fated liner embarked on the last leg of its voyage. But, sailing off Algiers an engine room fire resulted in a cataclysmic explosion. Four crew members were killed. The rescue of the remaining 1,276 passengers and crew was successful, but the hulk, whilst being towed to Gibraltar, sank beneath the waves. The Monte Rosa, seized as a war prize in 1945 and renamed MV Empire Windrush, pioneered West Indian immigration to Britain. Other liners soon joined in the massive Caribbean exodus. However, the MV Monte Rosa aka MV Empire Windrush will forever be known for its part in changing the face of Britain forever.

HE recent discovery of gold particles in the leaves of eucalyptus trees in Western Australia has completely overturned the old saying “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Which made me wonder which other sayings simply don’t stand up to closer examination… Murphy’s Law (“if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong and at the worst possible moment”) is also way off the mark. For instance, ripping off a shirt button or breaking a shoelace when in a rush is probably down to the extra stress you’re under when you know you’re late and need to get somewhere fast. Likewise: “Healthy as a horse.” Any horse owner will tell you that a horse is like an Italian sports car. If it can break down, it will. “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out.” In

other words, don’t break out the barbie until May’s safely behind you. Really? This year in the UK, it was more like July before it was anywhere near warm enough to mothball those winter woollies. “Lightning never strikes in the same place twice.” Rubbish! Lightning strikes repeatedly wherever the surface offers
points of conductivity - usually in those places where the conditions produce lots of thunderstorms. After all, that’s the sole purpose of lightning conductors: to make the inevitable strikes harmless by offering them a seductive sitting duck that’ll deal with the discharge safely. “Cracking your knuckles gives you
arthritis.” Most medical studies have found no link whatsoever between this annoying habit and arthritis. The cracking sound isn’t bones being mangled out of shape but the release of pockets of gas from between joints. That said, long periods of knuckle-cracking may contribute to lesser grip strength. So best pack it in, anyway. Basically, these sayings are all just metaphors that were never meant to be taken literally. And straight out of the “I saw you coming” school of coffee-table books! Parents and children dressing alike? SOME high street fashion retailers appear to have come up with a new way to make money… selling matching outfits for parents and children. Do you think that nowadays children are often dressed in more adult clothing? Do you think this has an effect on their childhood?
THE idea of parents and children wearing matching outfits got a mixed reaction from our readers. Diana Feria, a mother who is about to open a shop in Arroyo de la Miel for second hand baby items said; “My husband and I share the belief that every person, be it adult or child has his or her own personality and linking them by dressing alike is not “logical.’ We’ve never dressed like our children or made them dress in the same way as us, because we each have our own identity to express. Even if we had twins we would never dress them alike.” Elise Clement said there is nothing wrong with matching outfits, however, she does

E just won’t go away. Whistleblower Edward Snowden, via journalist Glenn Greenwald, has revealed details of yet more illegal surveillance carried out by the US on its allies, one of whom is Spain. An aggrieved Spanish Government summoned the American ambassador in Madrid to explain his country’s actions. One of the questions asked might have been why, in just one month (December 10, 2012 to January 8, 2013) 60 million communications in Spain were monitored and stored by the National Security Agency (NSA). Multiply that number globally, and billions upon billions of phone calls, emails, text messages and web searches were monitored and stored over the past decade.
But we mustn’t worry too much. The NSA and GCHQ, among other eavesdropping organisations, are collecting and storing this data for reasons of national and international security. They assure us they are doing it to keep us safe from that most ubiquitous of enemies: Islamic

Serving as a Russian linguist in the Intelligence Corps in West Germany during the mid-80s I was tasked with listening to Soviet communications, principally those of the Third Shock Army in East Germany. And listen I did. But I didn’t hear a great deal. There just wasn’t that much going on. The Russian armies in East Germany had been rusting away for well over a decade. Russia had no money to restore the Red Army to its former glory. The same applied to the nuclear side of things. But that didn’t fit with the narrative of the time. Through the Reagan and Thatcher years the threat of the Soviet menace was cranked up, even when Gorbachev began to push for ‘perestroika’ and ‘glasnost’. They were determined to get every last mile they could out of the Cold War to keep those tax dollars coming in and keep the Military Industrial Complex rolling
on, though they insisted it was done with the intention of keeping the free peoples of the world safe from Bolshevik aggression. Why would it be any different today? Are Obama and Cameron cut from a more righteous cloth than their predecessors? I think not. Just as happened through the Cold War, we are bombarded with threats, this time of terrorism, through governmental channels and through the complicit mainstream media. So we allow our governments more power, we spend more on defence and on surveillance, and we allow our liberties to be eroded. Only when a person of conscience comes along and blows the whistle do we realise how much our governments have abused their powers. Thanks to Snowden we now have a chance not only to give the American ambassador in Madrid an ear bashing, but also to return America, the most powerfully militarised surveillance state the world has ever known, to some form of sane behaviour. The UK, no doubt, will follow suit.

Cocoa actually reversed blood vessel damage after 30 days, so that measurements of blood vessel function were comparable to those of healthy people of the same age. Flavanol content varies among products and the way flavanols are metabolised may be influenced by other substances in the body, so results may vary. And since many chocolate products are high in sugar, fat and calories, chocolate lovers with diabetes should keep in mind that reducing or preventing overweight and obesity is an important part of managing diabetes and heart health. “The degree of reversal of blood vessel dysfunction was comparable to the
reported degree of improvement observed after using controlled exercise or drugs, including insulin,” said the study’s authors. “Assuming that improvement of blood vessel dysfunction is associated with better cardiovascular prognosis, the regular intake of flavanol-containing cocoa should produce similar effects.” Both studies cited this week demonstrate the effect of lifestyle on health!

Babies remember music played whilst in womb SCIENTISTS believe that babies who were played music whilst still in the womb remembered the tune months after being born. Researchers at the University of Helskini (Finland) gave a CD to 12 pregnant women and asked them to play it five times a week during the last three months of pregnancy before destroying the CD after giving birth to ensure any memory of the songs came from pregnancy. The researchers found the babies could remember the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star up to four months after birth. They said: “These results show that babies are capable of learning at a

UST when you thought the world of political correctness could not get any sillier, along comes that strange body, the European Court of Human Rights, and demands that convicted terrorists of ETA, the militant Basque separatist group, be released from prison. Now, I have little to do with either side of the Basque conundrum, but I would feel rather concerned if a convicted terrorist - many having killed were to set up home next door. It seems the hand of a reluctant Spanish government has been forced in the matter, which, as with many rulings by the European Court, appears based on technicalities rather than common sense. These busybodies in Strasbourg, France,
EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGHTS: Rules on technicalities rather than common sense. evidently have little else to do to justify their time, so I thought one excellent suggestion would be for them to reach out and ‘adopt a terrorist.’ Surely these Eurocrats have plenty of room in their fine houses (probably paid for by the European taxpayer - that would be us, dear readers) to lend a comfy en suite room to one of ETA’s most assiduous members. They could bond over dinners, the busybody perhaps sharing
riveting details of red tape and bureaucracy, while the terrorist could hold court about how to make a home-made bomb to cause maximum damage. I wonder how quickly, at that point, the motion to release the prisoners would be rescinded..? But at least that way, the families of the victims would be spared the assassins’ gloating presence in their communities. And while ETA declared an end to
its campaign in 2011, few would surely sleep soundly with the knowledge of who was now skulking around the neighbourhood freely. One of those released, Ines del Rio, was shown in the media smiling as she left prison, where she spent 26 years for her role in 23 murders and terrorist attacks during the 1980s. Unsurprisingly, the decision was vehemently protested against by the public and government alike -
two sides of a coin that rarely agree. Just over a year for each kill doesn’t sound like any justice I would subscribe to, yet the European Court insisted that the releases be made and, in some cases, compensation paid. Now, I believe it is more probable for pigs to fly or hell to freeze over than for any President of the United States to release confirmed terrorists early or at all. Certainly not from a nation that is so paranoid about national security that it spies on the rest of the world - another source of outrage here in Spain, where it was recently revealed that the US National Security Agency had tapped some 60 million phone calls in just one month. I can’t tell you which is worse political correctness or ardent disregard and disrespect of other nations - but if I were a terrorist or criminal of any kind, there is no doubt that I would base myself in Europe, where I could wave the Human Rights flag at the first sign of trouble. Thus keeping those busy Eurocrats in jobs paid for by the European taxpayer.

Chocolate doesn’t make people fat CHOCOLATE has gone from guilty pleasure to just a pleasure. A study carried out at the University of Granada has revealed that teenagers who eat more chocolate have less excess fat on their bodies. The research studied chocolate as a food traditionally linked to obesity, and measured the body fat index of 1,458 Spanish teenagers. The findings were surprising: those who eat more chocolate are the thinner. The researchers, however, didn’t seem to be so surprised as they stressed the antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties of the once-banned-from-diets food.
In fact, they claim what makes people fat in chocolate are the sugar and milk used to make it. The researchers added that cutting down on chocolate on a diet is pointless as, although it doesn’t make people lose weight, it doesn’t make them fat either.

Calling all wine amateurs celebrate the European way THIS Sunday wine amateurs are called to celebrate the European Day of Wine Tourism. Organised by the European Network of Wine Cities (RECEVIN), this day aims at promoting wine tourism both at a national and international level. It also aims at promoting areas surrounding vineyards as economic assets, as it has done since it was first held five years ago. Countries joining the winefriendly network include France, Italy, Greece, Germany, Portugal and Slovenia. In Spain, cities like Aranda de Duero, Jerez de la Frontera, Tomelloso, Vilafranca del Penedes and Villarobledo are part of the association. These cities will offer numerous activities to commemorate the drink, including guided tours in vineyards and wineries as well as wine and tapas tastings. For the first time Spanish homemade mango jam hits the stores THE first home-made mango jam manufactured in Spain has been launched. The product can be found in gourmet shops, herbalists and fruit shops all over the country from €2.50. The jam is made with no added preservatives or artificial colours, and is 75 per cent mango flesh and 22 per cent sugar. The remaining 3 per cent is lemon juice, which serves as a natural preservative.

it in a period of a year to prevent it from losing its antioxidant properties. Malaga Mango Jam (Mmm) is the company behind this creation, which is made entirely with Osteen mango. This variety is grown in the Malaga region of the
Axarquia, where the company is based, one of Spain’s main subtropical fruit producers. The company expects to sell 20,000 jars of homemade mango jam per year at a price of €3.50 each. To meet this demand, they need at least 10,000 kilos of the subtropical fruit, they claimed. The Pharmacy College at the University of Granada is carrying out a study to determine the nutritional value of the jam. In the meantime, Mmm representatives claim the jam elevates the flavour of the mango, something which is very appealing to children, they added.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to end after fifteen years

TV has confirmed that long-running quiz Who Wants to be as Millionaire? is to draw to a close, to coincide with Chris Tarrant stepping down as host. “It has been a huge part of my life for 15 years and I’ve loved every minute of it, but it is time for me to move on,” Tarrant said in a statement. “It has been the most remarkable journey and I consider myself very fortunate to have been associated with Millionaire from its inception. ITV has been fantastic in its support from day one and to see its huge success has been thrilling.” The presenter added that Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? had “touched a nerve” with the UK public when it launched in 1998. In recent years, the series has returned for a number of celebrity specials, with Sir

Those behind the BBC Two show have revealed that the forthcoming series will see the Shelby family expand their crime empire, while maintaining control over their Birmingham heartland. Gang leader Tommy (played by Cillian Murphy) also looks set to be undermined by sinister forces in his attempts to make the black market business legitimate, but his ascent into 1920s high society will be aided by his criminal credentials.

N previouds issues I have recounted how wealthy Russian refugee Phil had hired me as a guide to see famous bullfighter El Cordobes in Sevilla. Poor Philip became greatly disturbed upon sight of the first toro being agitated. He wanted me to leave the corrida with him. If he’d asked me to fly across the ring it would have been an easier task. But, once sat in the front row with my new celebrity friends - I was sitting next to Hollywood actress Deborah Kerr and Kennedy’s former press secretary Pierre Salinger - I belonged. Only God or a

stomped out, I blinked with feigned thoughtfulness and waved again for the beer guy. I had to concentrate on matters at hand - the corrida. “May I invite you to a cocktail or bottle of wine?” I enquired of my fellow royalty. After all,
money was no object. We became good friends that afternoon and Señora Kerr knew her bulls well. While my celestial happiness rolled on with the afternoon, a niggling worry whispered to me to not forget ‘poor Philip’.
I wondered what a man with $10,000 cash in his pocket would do in Sevilla if he couldn’t speak a word of Spanish? Well, of course, he’d just pace up and down and hate me. The rich suffer too, you know. When the corrida ended I bid farewell to my companions agreeing to meet them for lunch the next day. Just approaching the entrance gate I could see Philip’s forlorn face posed like a pillar in the middle of the gateway so as to not miss me. He was bursting to scream at me. But I wasn’t the tour guide for nothin’. “Philip, you didn’t miss a damn thing. The bulls wouldn’t charge and Cordobes didn’t feel like puttin’ on his show. What a bummer! We’d better head off to find a place to stay.” He was in my control again.

Time to plant winter garlic

A
S indicated in our book Growing Healthy Vegetables In Spain, November and December are popular months for planting overwintering garlic. The garlic plants that grow can be harvested at two stages of growth: As young stems when like large spring onions. Grown to maturity for harvesting bulbs for storing in the late spring. Since garlic needs little space, crops can be grown in large flowerpots on apartment terraces as well as in raised beds and the open garden. I planted in raised beds and
containers last week and they were up within five days. How to grow Garlic is best grown by sowing individual cloves or segments broken off from sizeable bulbs. Plant in a friable, well-draining soil which has been manured for preceding crops but not in recently manured soils. However, if you have a wood-burning stove or an autumn bonfire the ashes can be worked into the soil before planting or sprinkled around growing corms to top up the soil’s natural potash levels. If you have a heavy soil, mix in some sand to improve drainage and place a little sand under each clove when planted. It is wise to water garlic less than onions and if your vegetable plot is
watered by a traditional flooding from irrigation channels or is liable to flood after heavy autumn rains, it’s wise to sow garlic on the ridges between the flooded growing strips or specially prepared ridges in the normal growing areas. Raised beds are excellent for growing garlic as the soil conditions are right and cloves can be planted only eight to 10 centimetres apart, although double that will often yield larger bulbs. When planting, if the soil is well prepared, it is sufficient to push each corm down into the soil until the tip is covered with two or three centimetres of soil. If planted more shallowly they can rise out of the ground after rain or when the roots start to grow. Alternatively, dig narrow trenches or individual holes with a narrow trowel or stick. The only care during the growing season will be to ensure they don’t dry out, and weeding. By the way, garlic planted under or between rose bushes can help deter fungal attacks and

aphids. Obtaining garlic bulbs Garlic bulbs are normally available at Agricultural Cooperatives in vegetable growing areas. However, it is more convenient in many areas to buy large bulbs at a local market, greengrocers or from gypsies selling them outside supermarkets. When you break up the bulbs it is worth separating out the large from the small cloves and planting them separately. The larger cloves being left in the ground until maturity for harvesting bulbs and the smaller segments grown for the young stems that are excellent in salads, casseroles and omelettes. Although garlic is a major crop in Spain you are unlikely to find more than two or three varieties. One with a white outer skin, one pinkish and the other with a purple tint. If you tour Spain it is possible to buy traditional white, pink and purple-skinned regional varieties at local markets but you may not be able to find out the names as bulbs have been passed down from generation to generation in the villages. Two named varieties we have come across are Morada and Rose de Lautrec. You might be interested in obtaining a collection of named varieties from different parts of Europe from The Garlic Farm

The more you plant the more you will have for harvesting as young tierno stems during the winter. When to harvest Young stems are normally harvested when they are about half to three-quarters of a centimetre thick. Mature bulbs are normally harvested when the leaves start to die back. If bulbs produce flower stalks cut these to half their length before they bud. This can stimulate larger bulbs. Don’t worry if your harvested bulbs are smaller than the ones in the market. Indeed they may be packed with more taste. Storing Ensure you thoroughly dry the harvested bulbs in the sun before storing. They can be stored in net sacks, shallow trays or if you have the patience plait them for hanging up. Typical uses Young stems, ajos tiernos, for flavouring cooked dishes, chopped up in winter salads or steamed or fried and then mixed into omelettes. These have a mild taste more like spring onions
and chives than mature garlic bulbs. Cloves from mature bulbs can be used as follows: a. Chopped up by hand or in an electric herb chopper with tomato for spreading on bread for breakfast or to accompany tapas or soups. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stoned olives can also be added to the mix. b. In a wide variety of soups, casseroles or baked dishes. c. Stir fried or baked as a vegetable. d. A full large bulb in the centre of a traditional oven cooked arroz al horno is an essential ingredient and decoration. e. To give flavour to pickled olives. f. Pickled cloves in a salt/vinegar brine. These are eaten as a tapa in the same way as olives. The pickling removes the strong garlic taste. g. As an infusion for a winter detox and a flu and cold relief as described in our book Living Well From Our Garden – Mediterranean style. g. Busy time for MACS IT has been a busy time for MACS volunteers. Ann’s accessories and El Pinar bar in Mojacar hosted a fashion show for the cancer support group. More than 60 guests attended the Macs Fashion Show with the El Pinar providing a special three course lunch with cava on arrival. Ann Webber and Kathy Walker worked tirelessly all afternoon dressing models and advising how to accessorise with Gillian Williamson, Thelma Danzelman, Suzy Carolyn Franklin and Lady Ellen. What a fabulous job the ladies did, not only giving their free time for the show, but modelling knitwear, scarves and trousers in over 25º C temperatures. A MACS spokesperson said: “As always the support from the public was amazing, €391 was raised on the raffle. Anne Webber donated €68, El Pinar bar donated €58, a meal for two and a bottle of wine for a raffle prize, and provided lunch for all the models. LAST week I told how BB, my Rottweiler had become aggressive toward my daughter following his lifesaving operation for bloat. On the morning of my radio show when I went downstairs I heard BB talking to me. Many of you will understand that dogs do talk to us in many ways. His is a baby yap, one that cannot be ignored. I was delighted because I had not heard this since he had

come home. I immediately went upstairs and informed Susan he was my old BB. After my radio show I decided to have a chat with Nazli from the Pointer Clinic, explaining I had a major problem with BB and also, in spite of eating greedily, he was losing weight. I asked her if the operation could be one of the causes. Nazli explained it can take six to eight months for
the wound from the operation to heal and after such an operation he will feel uncomfortable when lying in certain positions. That could certainly be the cause of him being grumpy and wary when we were going to touch where he was feeling extra tender. I have known Nazli about 20 years and trust her professionally. Now BB is having extra food (four meals a day) and we only
touch him when he comes to us and do not touch his body. We just tickle him under the chin. Nazli did emphasise that he is not out of the woods yet and time, patience and love will work with the healing process. This year’s autumn exhibition at Madrid’s Prado Museum provides an insight into Spanish history, culture and art, covering the period between 1650 and 1680.
The king and Velazquez Velazquez had been influenced by Rubens and was acknowledged as one of the finest portrait painters of the baroque era, although never quite reaching the status of his contemporary, Rembrandt. During his visits to Italy, considered the Mecca for artists, his talent as a portrait artist was recognised by Pope Innocent X. When he returned to Madrid as official artist to the royal family, his relationship with the king gave him access to the palace, which was a rare privilege. The first part of the exhibition displays portraits of the pope and cardinals in Rome and includes two of King Felipe IV. A large section is devoted to the numerous portraits of the queen, Mariana of Austria, Maria Teresa, both her stepdaughter and cousin, and especially her

T was a defining moment in Felipe IV’s reign with political, military and financial crisis, and the culmination of Velazquez’s illustrious career as official artist to the royal family during the golden age of Spanish art. It also provides a comparison between his works and those of his assistants and successors, Juan Bautista Martinez del Mazo, his son-in-law, and Juan Carreno. Felipe IV had been going through a difficult period when he married Mariana of Austria in 1649. His first wife, Elizabeth of France, had died in 1644 and two years later he lost his 17-year-old son and heir, Baltasar Carlos, to smallpox. Two years after the marriage, La Infanta Margarita was born and in the same year Velazquez returned to Madrid from Rome. It was the start of an extraordinarily close relationship between the king and the artist.

Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez daughter, La Infanta Margarita, wearing the traditional framed dresses in a variety of colours. His paintings of Felipe Prospero and La Infanta Margarita were considered to be among the finest portraits of children up to that time. Although his earlier portraits were classical with the subject against a dark background, he took advantage of using real locations in the palace and adding personal objects such as flower vases, pets and ornaments to give a greater sense of family life, space and depth to his works. This is evident in his masterpiece, Las Meninas, which is included as part of the exhibition even though it remains in its permanent place in the Prado.
Las Meninas A family portrait Despite its complexity it remains a family portrait including La Infanta Margarita, her maids of honour, dwarfs and pets as well as Velazquez himself and the king and queen, who are reflected in
the mirror. Velazquez is believed to have borrowed the idea of using mirrors in his works from the Arnolfini Marriage, Van Eyck’s masterpiece, in the National Gallery, London.
Some works never before seen in Spain Controversy has arisen over a ‘copy’ of Las Meninas, attributed to his son-in-law, which belongs to the William Bankes collection at Kingston Lacy in Dorset, UK, now part of the National Trust, believed to have been painted in 1660, the year of Velazquez’s death. It came to England during the early part of the 19th century. Art historian, Dr Matias Diaz, from the Spanish Royal Academy of Art, who has spent years researching the origin of the painting, said: “I consider this work to be a first, smaller draft of Las Meninas, painted by the master himself.” This is contested by the exhibition’s curator, Javier
La Infanta Margarita in blue dress by Diego Velazquez Portus, who argues: “A simple study of the Kingston Lacy work shows it lacks colour and detail and it is not an original.” A close inspection reveals differences. There is a mystery over the Cross of the Order of Santiago, an honour bestowed on Velazquez by the king in 1659 and who ordered it to be added to his tunic in the main painting after his death. In addition, the king and queen are clearly reflected in the mirror and he delicately holds the brush. In the Kingston Lacy painting the cross is not apparent, neither is the brush and the reflection in the mirror is unclear. There is also a likeness between this work and the family portrait of Martinez del Mazo, painted in 1665. This controversy is likely to remain unresolved.
The continuity of Velazquez’s style The final section covers the period following the deaths of Velazquez in 1660 and the king
in 1665. These are works by Mazo and Carreno, illustrating the continuity of Velazquez’s style. Margarita married her uncle Leopold of Austria to forge an alliance, which led to the transfer of several of these paintings to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The portraits of Queen Mariana, who became Regent, while her son Carlos was a child, depicts her in mourning, while the young king, Carlos II, appears in his full royal regalia. The exhibition, organised in conjunction with the AXA Foundation, displays 29 major works of which 15 belong to Velazquez. Many of the works, on loan from overseas museums and private collections, have never previously been on display in Spain.

‘King Arthur’ of Mojacar ALL SAINTS this year saw the loss of one of Mojacar’s best and most unpretentious spirits - Arthur Cox has passed away. I had the privilege of writing about Arthur and his vital contribution to Mojacar’s social and business scene some years back. I entitled the story ‘King Arthur Rules.’ He did in his very quiet and
powerful manner. Back in those formative years no fiesta was official unless Arthur was in attendance. He stood at the proceedings, told a few stories, read some of his street poetry, and made us all laugh at the characters he portrayed. Yet, we both knew that we were laughing at none other than our foolish selves. He hailed from the East End of London before he arrived home to Mojacar to bless us with his songs and good humour. Everyone that knew him could tell more than
one story about the humble personage that bestowed so much nobility upon us. All who knew him will miss his cheerful greetings and chat. He was stoic, proud, and unbeatable just like those legendary good folk that fought Hitler to a standstill. I imagine he has brushed himself off and already found a new listening audience over a cuppa tea and a bit of pastry. “Here’s one about a gal from Kentucky,” he would initiate. “Careful now dad where you go with this one,” would admonish his daughter Wendy. But Arthur rolled on and somehow - we all ended up in Timbuktu. Rest in Peace kind King.
