Flock shock THIRTY or so Barbary sheep in Alcoy’s Font Roja national park are causing too much damage and will be culled. They will be replaced by mountain goats.

Sign on the padron and help Benidorm BENIDORM has launched a ‘padron-awareness’ campaign. “It’s your town. Register!” residents are urged as the town hall strives to bring the registered population up to 75,000. Success would bring in €2

million more in funding from the central government. But more is at stake than receiving extra money, explained Benidorm Mayor Agustin Navarro. “Benidorm not only faces the difficult task of increasing the municipal register but must also

ensure that it does not shrink,” Navarro declared. INE, Spain’s National Statistics’ Office, has modified the padron criteria, obliging foreign residents, even those from EU countries, to renew their registration on the municipal roll.

Private treatment for state system patients MORE than 7,000 Social Security patients in the Valencian Community could have operations in private clinics. The regional government intends

to spend an estimated €9 million to reduce waiting times to 85 days and meet targets by the end of the year. Patients will have the right to turn down the private option if they

prefer, the regional health department announced. About half of the 2,604 patients in Alicante Province likely to be affected by the new arrangement

are awaiting orthopaedic procedures. Seven private clinics in Benidorm, Alicante City, Elche, Alcoy and Torrevieja have agreed to participate in the scheme.

FAST WORK: AVE keeps good time.

AVE is flying along

THE Alicante-Madrid AVE high-speed train has achieved 85 per cent punctuality. This is better time-keeping than any of Spain’s other AVE connections, rail operator Renfe announced recently. With the trains reaching speeds of 306 kilometres an hour on the Albacete to Madrid section of track, some arrived at their destination with time to spare. At present, AVEs between Alicante and Albacete cannot go above 200 kilometres an hour. If all goes according to schedule and

safety measures and signalling tests produce the right results, trains on this section should be running at 300 kilometres an hour after January. This will considerably cut the present journey times and on the Friday and Sunday non-stopping trains, they will be reduced to two hours and five minutes. More than 600,000 people have used the Alicante AVE since the service began last June, an increase of 41.2 per cent on last year’s figures.

SALESIAN nuns have left Callosa’s Fundacion Asilo Hospital after 114 years. Twice in recent days local residents and the Asilo’s own elderly occupants peacefully blockaded the exit to thwart their relocation to Alcantarilla in Murcia. Eventually they left under cover of night.

The council and civic groups supported the unsuccessful attempts to prevent their departure. A 5,500-signature petition to the mother superior in Alcantarilla, begging her to reconsider the decision to recall the sisters, was also ignored. The oldest of the Asilo’s five nuns is 84-year-old

Callosa-born Sor Amor, who joined the order when she was 16. Her family also asked the order to allow her to remain but the request, like all others, fell on deaf ears. The nuns were recalled because they are needed for other tasks, owing to the ‘lack of vocations’, according to the convent.

Festival to celebrate ‘firewater’

HE 22nd edition of the Fiesta del Orujo will be held in Potes, Cantabria, from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday. This year, the ‘Orujero Mayor’, the patron of the festival, will be Cantabria-born actor Eduardo Noriega. Orujo is a strong liquor made in Northern Spain, obtained from the distillation of marc, the solid remains left after pressing the grapes. It is a transparent spirit with an alcohol content over 50 per cent (100 proof) and is also known as aguadente, or ‘firewater’. In Cantabria it is mainly made in the Liebana Valley where it has become an artisanal craft for some families who after making wine for themselves distil the pomace in a still. Young orujo is a colourless liquor, while aged orujo is amber. The aged variety is fermented and distilled the same way, but then poured into oak barrels to age for at least two years. Cantabria has been distilling orujo since the 14th century at least.

Easy terms for paying local dues JAVEA residents are now able to choose how and when they pay local taxes. Up and till 2012, these were collected in the usual manner, with fines for late payment. Payment by instalment was then introduced, prompted by the difficult economic situation. A year later, after ironing out problems, the scheme has

been definitively adopted, permitting residents to personalise their town hall payments. They will have the choice of paying the total in monthly or three-monthly instalments, in person or by standing order. Those making one single payment at the beginning of the year will receive a 4 per cent discount.

Unexpected source of Legionnaires’ AN expert cited a Calpe hotel while addressing an international conference on Legionnaires’ disease in Australia. He hoped this would help to establish new norms for hydrotherapy pools, said Doctor Sebastian Crespo, Head of Clinical Analysis and Molecular Biology at a Palma de Mallorca clinic. Forty-two people were affected and six people died, the doctor reminded his Melbourne audience. The first cases were detected between late November 2011 and January 2012, affecting pensioners, many of them British who were staying at the hotel. A further 17 tourists were taken ill in May and June of the following year. The outbreak, which lasted eight months, was traced to stagnant water in out-of-sight cavities in the pool. The hotel had to be closed while the hydrotherapy pool was rebuilt and all piping replaced. The bacteria which cause Legionnaires’ disease are more often found in cooling towers and large air conditioning units in hotels and hospitals, according to Doctor Crespo. The focus of the disease in the Calpe case was ‘a novelty’, he added.

Double fire in Gandia A 77-YEAR-OLD woman has died in an apartment fire in Gandia. Her husband, aged 75, was affected by smoke inhalation but her granddaughter of 24 was unhurt. Firefighters soon had the blaze under control but had to help trapped occupants escape from the flat above. A day later, fire broke out again in the same apartment and residents were once again temporarily evacuated. The next day, relatives of the victims went to repair the door that was broken down during the rescue, a fire brigade source explained later. It is believed they could have unwittingly stirred up the embers of the first fire.

Big-hearted restaurants THREE Alicante restaurants are providing free meals for the jobless two days a week. The idea came to David Galvañ, owner of El Chef, when he overheard a child ask his parents if there was anything for dinner that night. He was so moved that he vowed to ensure that the unemployed could eat a hot meal twice a week. David mentioned the plan to friends, Paco, who owns Alvaro’s Cafe and Javier of Café Dilema, who wanted to help. Throughout November on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 1pm and 2pm, unemployed families will get a meal at El Chef. “Above all I want to help the children,” he said. David will provide the same food that he serves to customers: salad, the Menu del Dia’s main course and water. Javier will supply coffee and Paco will make the children’s merienda or tea.

Benidorm archaeological treasures listed at last LUIS DUART, late parish priest of Benidorm, was also an archaeology aficionado. He arrived in the town in 1950 and was responsible for the first excavations in El Tossal at the end of the Poniente beach. On his death in 1983 he bequeathed his collection of 1,396 finds to the town. This has now been catalogued by the archaeologist Victor Cañavete, who described it as “spectacular.” The collection extends from the Neolithic age to the 19th century although “dating some out-ofcontext finds” proved difficult, he admitted. Amongst Don Luis’s treasures are a hand axe and adze used around 10,000 years ago as well as Bronze Age pottery from between 3300 and 1200BC. The Greek, Iberian, Roman, Moorish and Christian cultures are all present in the priest’s collection. The 1,143 coins in the collection are mostly Roman but include

The town had commissioned a report by the same firm that assessed the impact of Elche’s crematorium for the regional Health Department. “This is a legal weapon that we can use to halt activity,” Roman said.

Homework needed all round as pupils in the region fail to make the grade THE region’s secondary-school pupils lag behind in maths as well as Valenciano and English composition. Three-quarters failed to make the grade after diagnostic tests on 96,000 pupils by the Regional Education Department. Primary

Property is Number One

ALICANTE sells more properties to foreign buyers than any other province in Spain. For two years it has consistently outsold Malaga, Barcelona and Madrid. Alicante, Malaga and Murcia accounted for 50 per cent of all Spanish property sales to foreign buyers between January and July this year. Of these, 29 per cent were located in Alicante which ‘exported’ €955 million in homes sold to international buyers, outstripping the €650 million exported by the province’s footwear manufacturers. The central government in Madrid should incentivise residential international

tourism, claimed property sector association Provia. Spain is looking to attract foreign investors with the new Start-up Law and streamlining red tape, Provia pointed out. These measures are ‘pointless’ unless the government complements them with an adequate offer. Non-residents usually want high-end properties, not unsold stock left over from the construction boom. Facilities are needed to build new developments or complete unfinished projects aimed specifically at foreign buyers, Previa maintained.

The study, carried out among 800 professional drivers from the UK, France, Germany and Spain, suggests that both drivers and their employers should work together to achieve a safer and more efficient driving standard. Energy-efficient driving, however, seems to be less relevant as almost a quarter of those polled did not consider it important. When asked about how their driving style was monitored, only 10 per cent of motorists said they had monitoring devices in their vehicle.

Sixty-one per cent claimed their performance was controlled through ‘observation’, Spain being the country where this type of control is more usual. As for ways to encourage drivers to improve their skills, most of them said economic incentives were the best option. But Spanish drivers claimed they were more concerned about good performance than receiving bonuses.

Mayor Chulvi expressed concern that with the lead-up to Christmas, Spanish and expatriates risk not only their own lives but also those of innocent bystanders when they get behind the wheel of a car in a drunken state. The legal limit of alcohol is 0.25 for car and motorbike drivers, and 0.15 for commercial drivers and those who passed their driving test within the last two years.

REMEMBRANCE services will be held this Sunday and on Monday by many of The Royal British Legion Branches in the North District. Poppies have been delivered to businesses in the area and the legion spends £250,000 (€290,000) each day to help armed forces personnel and their families. By making a donation for a poppy people are supporting those who have dedicated their lives to serving their country. For 90 years, the Poppy Factory in Richmond, Surrey (UK) has been making poppies, crosses and wreaths for The Royal British Legion’s annual Poppy Appeal. During the last two weeks, various digital media have been subjected to constant attacks that have crippled their websites, affected their normal operations and resulted in the loss of an estimated €100,000. Agents from the Technological Research Unit of the National Police in Alicante were alerted to the hacker and arrested him at his home in Torrevieja, where they seized two laptops, hard drives, Nazi flags and fascist material. Operating under the name of ‘Cyber Command Spanish Fascist Empire’ he sent emails to several media outlets making bomb threats and threatening to kill journalists. Cash wanted to restructure debt

KITCHEN appliance manufacturer Fagor Electrodomesticos needs €170 million to put it on its feet. The San Sebastian company is a cooperative and most of its workers are also partners in the firm. It is currently in voluntary talks with its creditors and has debts that some sources place at €800 million.

The company is “viable,” managing director Sergio Treviño told a Diario Vasco interviewer. But Fagor needs €170 million, he said, and needs it soon to restructure its debt and prevent a domino effect that could cause its collapse. Fagor Electrodomesticos has 5,600 employees worldwide, of whom 2,000 work in the company’s five Spanish factories.

Spain’s mining sector in decline FIREDAMP, the miner’s enemy, recently took six lives in Leon. Deadly methane gas released with the coal is rapid, silent and odourless. In the past the death of a caged canary was the only warning of firedamp’s presence, but the wellequipped miners in the Emilio del Valle pit found 694 metres were still vulnerable. Firedamp and Spain’s geologically-complex mining areas make its coal uncompetitive. Large quantities of methane in many mines in Leon and Asturias require heavy investment in maintenance and safety measures. The mining sector’s decline began in the

1960s and accelerated in the 1980s. At that time, 51,127 men were employed in Spain’s pits. Now there are fewer than 5,000. Between 1990 and 2012 the industry required €24 billion of public money, but Brussels has decreed that by 2018 only mines able to survive without government funding may remain open. Jobs will be cut to 4,500 and uncertainty regarding the future prompted last year’s miners’ strike and march on Madrid. Until then, the government has promised the unions that Spanish coal will generate 7 per cent of the output of the country’s power-stations.

This is the first time since 2003 that offers have been invited. Bids will be graded according to

requirements based on location, the distance from other Estancos, floor space and distance from schools. Once all conditions are met, the only other consideration taken into account will be the amount offered. This is a far cry from the past when Estancos were inherited and remained a family business.

Recovery in the UK gains momentum THE UK economy has been on a strengthening trend for the past few months thanks to improved economic data. The feel-good factor is contagious and is gathering pace across the entire spectrum of the economy. In yet another good report out in early October, optimism in the UK financial industry advanced to its strongest level in 17 years! This is extremely good news that will likely weigh on the Bank of England’s monetary policy direction in the form of forward guidance which focuses on keeping interest rates low for at least three years. The UK recovery has encouraged investors to speculate that the Bank of England will have to lift interest rates earlier than previously indicated. At the September meeting, Governor Mark Carney suggested that the

unemployment rate will have to drop below 7 per cent before a rate increase is considered. An increasing number of investors are betting that the Bank of England will have to raise interest rates earlier if the economy keeps overheating and the move higher in the pound certainly reflects this view. The activity in the UK property market is also contributing to the recovery and it seems that the UK Government wants to keep momentum going and the good news flowing, especially as we move closer towards the general election. In a surprise announcement at

The scheme was brought forward to early October despite mounting criticism that the scheme, enabling buyers to

purchase a house with a deposit of just 5 per cent, could fuel a dangerous property bubble. In the Eurozone, confidence is also returning albeit at a much slower pace. The European Central Bank (ECB) stance is cautious and the central bankers do not seem in a rush to increase stimulus to support the recovery. ECB President Mario Draghi

acknowledges that the recovery is under way but he never fails to state that risks to the downside persist, especially due to the ongoing shutdown in the US and also to a key confidence vote in Italy in early October. Silvio Berlusconi’s attempt to unseat Prime Minister Enrico Letta dramatically failed and this contributed to restore calm in the entire region. Italy’s political crisis has been threatening the stability of the region for the past few months and Letta’s victory removes a major risk for the single currency. Nonetheless, the coalition remains fragile and any sign of political instability in Italy could send jitters again through the entire region. Overall Sterling has been nicely placed in the last month to take advantage of wobbles in Europe and the US, especially with the backdrop of an improving economic outlook.

Beware, the cost of lunch may be giving you financial indigestion… Loose change A look at finance for females

Jane Plunkett jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com

“THERE’S no such thing as a free lunch,” my father says, and boy is he right. In fact this simple little midday meal can cut a hefty chunk out of a person’s income. What may seem like a harmless, but necessary, midday munch can be responsible for big annual losses. So what can we do to still fill our bellies but reduce our spending? Well, drawing up and sticking to a budget is an essential way to see where your money goes and to save for the things you want to do and buy, but

tracking every little thing can be daunting. And that’s one of the main reasons why many people give up on their budgets. So a good idea is to start small, and looking at saving at lunch is a good place to begin, because it’s surprising just how much money people fork out for this meal. In the US the average American spends €8 a day on lunch, which adds up to almost €2,000 a year. A typical Spanish lunch, along with the all-important afternoon coffee, is probably close to €8 a day too. In Rio de Janeiro the annual cost of lunch is close to €1,500, while splashing out for a steak and chips a couple of time a week in the UK will set diners back about €3,500 a year. By making your own

ADDS UP: Eating out costs thousands a year. lunch every day it’s possible to save about €5 a day, which is about €1,500 a

year of extra cash. And it doesn’t have to be a massive chore either

preparing a to-go lunch. When you’re making dinner make extra portions that can be put in the fridge in Tupperware boxes which are easy to just grab before leaving for work the next morning. A tasty sandwich takes no time to prepare in the morning, while a few nuts, bananas or dried fruits on your desk are good snacks to help keep hunger at bay, and more importantly keep you away from splashing out €8 on a menu del dia.

Can they divide their Community? Q. I am president of a Community of Property Owners, which has been functioning for the past 12 years. Our Community has 31 houses on one side of the road and 21 houses on the other side, as it was Phase One and Phase Two of the development. 1. Can we split into two Communities? 2. Does this require a unanimous vote? Our administrators say so, but we feel a majority vote should be sufficient. 3. Can we stay as one Community, but have different rules for each side of the road? 4. Smoking is a problem around the pool area. Some want it and a few don’t want it. However, it was agreed to accept it at the 2007 AGM. You and the B.C. (Costa Blanca)

Law in Spain By David Searl

A. Yes, you can split into two Communities. And, yes, this requires a unanimous vote. Any change which involves modification of the original Statutes requires a unanimous vote, as set out in the Horizontal Law. It will be a long and complex process, requiring the legal dissolution of one Community and the creation of two new ones. Yes, you can remain as one Community, with some different regulations for each side of the road. If these rules do not involve changes in the original charter of the Community, a simple majority vote should suffice. If the Community has voted to accept smoking in the pool area, that is the rule. If someone wishes to change it, they can put forward a motion.

OPINION & COMMENT

Urgent talks needed for late night music bars WHY do I get the impression that the Spanish authorities want to close pubs and restaurants down? In Calahonda’s El Zoco commercial centre (Mijas Costa, Malaga), to comply with regulations, the landlords are being told ‘no music must be heard.’ A lot of tourists use this complex as their holiday destination, mainly because of its music and late bars. There is no soundproofing in these old buildings and to make them legal would cost too much money. These pubs and restaurants rely on the terrace space as they can’t squeeze everyone into a small area with music playing. As a small business, if they want to thrive and make a living, they must give what the customers want. The authorities should have a meeting with all late night business owners and come to a compromise to keep these bars and restaurants open. These bars need to open to accommodate the people that go down to the beach for the sun all day. Night-time is when they spend money and enjoy the night-life. Let us keep the Costa del Sol a holiday destination and not an old persons’ retirement resort GKS (By email)

Inappropriate DB of Palma wants people to ‘cover up’ when out and about (Letters 1476). I really do not understand why people think it appropriate to insist on others wearing clothes when it is warm enough for clothing not to be required. The naked human body is no more offensive than the body of a hippopotamus. In my view, the vast majority of people have accepted brainwashing by the people who have control of the major religions of Europe and the Americas to believe that they should be offended by the sight of naked bodies.

I HAD to stop the car and take this picture. It was a stunning sunset taken near Coin (Malaga). By Lucinda Monk (by email) Think of the money that could be saved if the security controls at airports, banks, etc, could be done away with because people would have nowhere to hide guns, grenades and rocket launchers. And for me personally, I would not have to get dressed just to go to the shops for my daily bread. Written in the ‘nudist colony’ ghetto of Vera Playa. Mike Roberts, Vera Playa (Almeria)

A fine threat REGARDING your story about Alcoy Council threatening to fine people €750 for feeding stray cats (Costa Blanca North, Issue 1478). Perhaps a better way would be to fine owners for not neutering and spaying their cats instead of throwing them out when they become pregnant. One person’s opinion when asked about neutering her tom cat was: “Oh, but that would spoil him.” Enough said!! Sheila Broderick (By email)

Ticking off IN regard to the letter from Anthony Jones that prostitution should be made legal in Spain (Letters Issue 1478). It has not been illegal since 1995, when it was decriminalised. There are, however, restrictions imposed by some municipalities on where they can operate. Pimping is illegal, but operating a brothel is legal, although the owner cannot directly benefit from the prostitutes’ earnings. I wish readers would do a little research before putting pen to paper. E G, Fuengirola (Malaga)

Justin Hunter’s letter calling for Sunday trading ( Letters 1476 ) drew a mixed response from readers...

Go home WHY does Justin Hunter want Sunday trading? These people who want to change the culture of the country they live in are annoying. I would assume they came to live here because of the way of life and the weather. If they don’t like it, go back to where they came from. GB, Albanchez (Almeria)

Quite right SUNDAY trading would be a huge boon to the community. In the summer many tourist area shops can open all week, and it is noticeable that most shops take advantage. They would not pay the extra staffing costs if it did not work. Your correspondent is quite right - it is time to open on a Sunday. P Wilson, Estepona (Malaga)

Heart-warming DOES Mr Hunter really want to see Spain’s family life and the peace we have, sent into oblivion? Isn’t it heart-warming to see several generations of families all together eating/walking/ enjoying life on the one day they can be together? Did we not leave the UK to escape rampant commercialism of our lives among other things? We do not need seven-day trading if we organise our lives accordingly. Companies will employ extra staff? Doubtful, existing staff will be forced to work extra hours as has happened in the UK. Yes, Spain should modernise and keep up with the times, but it must not destroy what is holy and rare in today’s world - family life, peace and tranquillity on one day a week. Beverley and Peter, Alhaurin (Malaga)

Face facts WHILE the debate over global warming heats up, it’s surprising that many experts ignore one of the main causes of environmental degradation: runaway world population. In 1900, the world population was 1.6 billion; in 1950, there were 2.5 billion; in the year 2000, 6.7 billion; and the projection for the year 2050 is that there will be almost 12 billion human beings. The life expectancy in most developed countries is already well into the 80s, and the rest of the world will achieve this in due course. A human being lives an average of three generations (75 years or more). With only two births per couple, when my wife and I die we’ll have left behind 12 more beings on the planet. It’s not arithmetic, but geometric. The Earth cannot sustain such growth, especially if we all aspire to a ‘First World’ lifestyle. Confronting this inconvenient truth entails difficult moral, ethical and sociological problems, but if we continue to ignore them the consequences for humanity will be unimaginable. Richard M McBride, Benidorm (Alicante)

Les Miserables (Film, 2012) Victor Hugo's epic 19th-century commentary on social injustice is brought expertly to the screen in spine-tingling, Oscar-winning fashion. The drama follows the life of Gallic convict Jean Valjean (an Oscarnominated Hugh Jackman) who jumps parole and builds a new existence as a respectable town mayor. With the kindling of revolution beginning to smoulder, he finds himself caught between his misunderstood past and attempts at redemption, before being forced to make some decisions that will forever affect his life, and those of his police captain pursuer Javert (Russell Crowe) and the young orphan girl Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) whom he saved and raised as his own. 7:00am Shakespeare in Love 9:10am My Best Friend's Wedding 11:00am Les Miserables 1:40pm Apollo 13 4:00pm Philadelphia 6:10pm My Best Friend's Wedding 8:00pm Les Miserables 10:45pm Evita 1:05am Baby, It's You 3:00am City of Angels 5:05am Anastasia

Romeo and Juliet (Film, 1996) Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes star in Baz Luhrmann's Oscar-nominated, BAFTA Award-winning version of Shakespeare's tale of 'star cross'd lovers'. Updated in setting to Verona Beach, where the gangs of the corporate dynasties, the Capulets and Montagues, battle with guns as much as knives. Luhrmann retains the dialogue but imposes his own stunning visual stamp on the film, turning a classic play into a classic film.

No one is born a racist LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT

BLACK OR WHITE: How racism can be passed on.

N

O child is born a racist. It is the world of adults that instils the idea that some of us may be different, or in some way unacceptable to others. To a child born in this 21st century, particularly in the West, it is perfectly normal for them to be surrounded by children of all creeds and ethnic backgrounds. Watch any group of children in creches or playgrounds and you will observe them all playing happily together, with no hint of favouritism or antagonism towards each other. So when does the ugly face of racial intolerance begin to manifest itself? Of course, a great deal of it is passed directly from the parents. Racist parents, constantly demonstrating intolerance of others, will sooner or later instil it into their own offspring. But I think in many cases it starts earlier than that and in my opinion, it is the media that must accept a lot of the blame. I think many of the children’s charities should sit down and have a rethink as to how they use the media to circulate their appeal campaigns. Day after day we are inundated with emaciated children, covered in flies with

Deadly bananas A BRITISH family had to evacuate their home after discovering dozens of venomous Brazilian wandering spiders in a bunch of bananas they had bought from a Sainsbury’s supermarket.

Jet-setting gator bulging eyes and inflated bellies. There are no watersheds to these appeals, so from a tender age little ones are constantly exposed to sights of the appalling living conditions and deprived suffering of children and babies. And 99 times out of 100 they are all black! Is it any wonder then that youngsters begin to observe each other differently? What makes it worse is that these children are, by the very state of their circumstances, also observed by these young minds to be inferior to those with full bellies, white parents and taps full of water. And how do the black tots react to this situation? Well to me it’s obvious. Firstly they must, after observing these images of deprived children, most of whom are the

same colour as themselves, begin to themselves feel in some way inferior. This must soon be taken over by any number of emotions. Jealousy, confusion, mistrust, anger and, above all, among both black and white, the previously unrealised fact that they are indeed not all the same. And there you have it. All the ingredients of future unrest and possible conflict. The birth of racism. What these charity groups can do about the situation, I have no idea. Perhaps the best plan of action would be a watershed to showing these images. At least it would prevent impressionable minds from becoming racists before they can speak. Keep the faith, Love Leapy Leapylee2002@gmail.com

and not entirely impartial reaction - to the Spanish political scene

S

PAIN’S President Mariano Rajoy would doubtless have preferred to pretend that the US does not monitor Spain’s communications. The Spanish right now are concerned about surviving on a day-to-day domestic basis. Few are going to waste precious energy over working themselves into an outraged lather about 90 million eavesdropped communications. They left that to the media, which embraced the NSA scandal as a change of flavour after the usual StrasbourgBarcenas-Crisis fodder. The government reluctantly responded by summoning the US ambassador for an explanation while quavering about “erosion of trust.” The NSA subsequently claimed that Spain and France carried out the original eavesdropping before passing the information to the US.

A weekly look

Rajoy must be relieved he did not do a Dilma Rousseff and cancel a Washington visit. Although, unlike his Brazilian counterpart, he has yet to receive an invitation and is unlikely to do anything to spoil his chances of getting one.

Danger money SIX coalminers died in Leon, overcome by methane as they worked 694 metres below ground. These were the last in the inevitably long line of deaths that occur wherever men have to hack out coal to earn a living. The devastating blow to the families of the men who died is also another debilitating blow to Spain’s struggling coal industry. Miners went on strike and marched on Madrid last year to protest at reductions in subsidies and their future is still uncertain. The Leon deaths are a further reminder that however much a miner is paid he earns it. Very often with his life.

Right side of the law RAJOY prudently stayed away from the Madrid protest against the Court of Human Rights ruling on the Parot Doctrine. The Strasbourg ruling forced the government to backtrack on plans to make ETA convicts serve longer than their original sentences, to the dismay of victim support associations. No minister was present at the demonstration organised by the most vociferous groups although most

PRUDENT: Spain’s President Mariano Rajoy. of the PP hierarchy attended. Used to turning out for anti-government demos in the Zapatero days, Esperanza Aguirre, Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, and others expected a warm welcome. To their surprise they got the bird, were booed and barracked. One of the associations, the AVT, called for the government to “reconsider” the Strasbourg decision. Rajoy knows there is nothing to reconsider because the government’s compliance is what living under rule of law means. Anything less reduces it to the same level as lawbreakers and terrorists.

Long-term terms THERE has never been a “life means life” sentence in Spain, although this is about to change. Some legal experts here have questioned whether this is wise or ethical as it eliminates the possibility of rehabilitation and prejudges its impossibility. Those used to the British system are happy enough to see it applied in some circumstances. How many people would feel easy at seeing Ian Brady on the street?

EWN GETS I T

EURO WEEKLY’S SPACE FOR YOU TO TAKE A BREAK, BE INFORMED AND ENJOY A CHALLENGE

Eighteen years have passed since American Jesse and Frenchwoman Céline met on a transEuropean train and fell in love. Jesse wrote a novel based on the experience which became a US bestseller and led him to meet Céline again after an interval of almost a decade. The couple now lives in Paris, proud parents to two young girls. However, their lives are far from perfect. Starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. Directed by Richard Linklater. Runtime 109 minutes. Rated 15.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Someone with a larger-than-life imagination makes you smile but that was not their intention. Try to be diplomatic and steer them in a different direction. Some feelings of loneliness will not be assuaged by working more. Perhaps it is time to consider taking on a pet or giving a current pet more attention. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) Sometimes, you find it hard to do things just for the pure enjoyment of it. Realise that not everything has to have a purpose or a profit. Look round this week and seek out something that will please your senses and bring a smile to your lips. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Contact with a less than ideal situation makes you realise just how lucky you are. It has been clear that the weeks are changeable and your situation at the moment far from settled. Pity those whose day-to-day life is completely predictable. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) This being a family oriented month, much of it may be spent getting together with relatives and going over old times. Perhaps you are compiling a photo album for older members of the family or vice versa. PISCES (February 20 - March 20) An exciting invitation may set tongues wagging and make a loved one jealous. You, meanwhile, are quite bemused by the whole thing. What comes out of this week is that you are of considerable value to others. The mere thought of you not being around sends ripples through your social circle. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Being asked to take on a new and demanding task this week may see you wishing that you had been less visible.

When approached by someone wanting you to trust them, be sure of their motives. Do what you feel is right but remain firmly in control, especially financially. It may not be the time to make a particular move, although others think that it is. There's no problem with discussing things and talking them through..

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Be aware that leopards do not change their spots, they merely hide them. Those who demand your trust need a cool checking out and don't be afraid to say 'no' as and when necessary.

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Social demands are made, but try to shuffle them to the weekend. Be diplomatic or someone close could become irritated. Keep an eye on the small print because something fundamental may have changed in a long-standing arrangement. Suddenly, at the weekend, you are thrust into the limelight.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Career and home are in disharmony but a bit of compromise soon sorts things out. You don't like playing the 'bad guy', but honesty is also important to you. Speaking your mind can be liberating although, initially, you may see it as a nuisance and embarrassing.

These are just a few of the bizarre and humorous but true, tales that come to light in a new book written by Torrevieja home owner Jacky Donovan. Originally from Newcastle, Jacky was a strong student, a successful career woman and

a loyal wife, before she swapped all of that for a life as a dominatrix in London in command of her own dungeon. She said: “A series of unplanned events; fate led me to a fetish club and from there came my business plan to open a dungeon.” As her alter ego, Mistress Kimberley, a high class dominatrix dressed in black leather, Jacky often indulged the strange fantasies

collaboration between Sony and Nintendo to bring a CD-ROM add-on to the Super NES. The two companies parted ways and Sony released the PlayStation, which became the first home console to sell 100 million units. 5. Xbox 360 Microsoft’s second attempt in the console market has been their most successful one up to date. The Xbox 360 features Xbox Live, a service used to compete in online games, as well as downloading music and films that players consider the best available.

Nintendo 64 Nintendo’s third console and the last home system to use cartridges to store games, the Nintendo 64 was the console the critically acclaimed ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ was originally launched for. 10. SEGA Dreamcast Initially designed to beat the original PlayStation, the Dreamcast is known for being SEGA’s last home console. Parents and children dressing alike? SOME high street fashion retailers appear to have come up with a new way to make money… selling matching outfits for parents and children. Do you think that nowadays children are often dressed in more adult clothing? Do you think this has an effect on their childhood?

THE idea of parents and children wearing matching outfits got a mixed reaction from our readers. Diana Feria, a mother who is about to open a shop in Arroyo de la Miel for second hand baby items said; “My husband and I share the belief that every person, be it adult or child has his or her own personality and linking them by dressing alike is not “logical.’ We’ve never dressed like our children or made them dress in the same way as us, because we each have our own identity to express. Even if we had twins we would never dress them alike.” Elise Clement said there is nothing wrong with matching outfits, however, she does

believe high streets should be cautious with the designs and ensure they are suitable for children. “Too many kids are dressing too old and want to look older too quick.” The Rojales student, 14, said when she was younger she did want to dress like her mum wearing her high heels “but most little girls do, it’s just dress up. I wouldn’t want to dress like her now, we have different styles.” But Sharon Carter, a mother of two from London who is holidaying on the Costa Blanca, said: “I’ve never really noticed matching mother and child outfits in the stores, apart from maybe in the odd magazine with celebrities doing it. I can’t see it catching on and becoming the norm. Children’s fashion should not mimic adult styles.” Tony Michael and Bev: It’s ridiculous.

and Celeine Lonsdale who live in La Alfoquia, Tony is retired and Celeine is a nurse for Almeria Angels, said: “We are not keen on the idea of matching outfits. Kids should be brought up as kids. They shouldn’t be wearing adult type clothing. We think they should enjoy their childhood and not be dressed as adults.” Michael and Bev Thistleton, both retired, of Live in Albanchez, agreed: “Matching outfits are ridiculous. Children are dressed in adult clothing and are growing up too quick. It does have an effect, they want to grow up too soon and it can be dangerous for children.”

HE recent discovery of gold particles in the leaves of eucalyptus trees in Western Australia has completely overturned the old saying “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” Which made me wonder which other sayings simply don’t stand up to closer examination… Murphy’s Law (“if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong and at the worst possible moment”) is also way off the mark. For instance, ripping off a shirt button or breaking a shoelace when in a rush is probably down to the extra stress you’re under when you know you’re late and need to get somewhere fast. Likewise: “Healthy as a horse.” Any horse owner will tell you that a horse is like an Italian sports car. If it can break down, it will. “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out.” In

other words, don’t break out the barbie until May’s safely behind you. Really? This year in the UK, it was more like July before it was anywhere near warm enough to mothball those winter woollies. “Lightning never strikes in the same place twice.” Rubbish! Lightning strikes repeatedly wherever the surface offers

points of conductivity - usually in those places where the conditions produce lots of thunderstorms. After all, that’s the sole purpose of lightning conductors: to make the inevitable strikes harmless by offering them a seductive sitting duck that’ll deal with the discharge safely. “Cracking your knuckles gives you

arthritis.” Most medical studies have found no link whatsoever between this annoying habit and arthritis. The cracking sound isn’t bones being mangled out of shape but the release of pockets of gas from between joints. That said, long periods of knuckle-cracking may contribute to lesser grip strength. So best pack it in, anyway. Basically, these sayings are all just metaphors that were never meant to be taken literally. And straight out of the “I saw you coming” school of coffee-table books! Whiplash injury? Get it checked by a chiropractor! “I HAD a minor car accident about five years ago, but I don’t think my neck pain has anything to do with that.” This is something that we often hear but commonly whiplash injuries cause numerous neckrelated problems including headaches, shoulder and arm pain. Most car accidents are minor collisions where noone seems to be hurt. Typically the persons involved are more concerned about the state of their vehicle than they are about their own state of health. If there are no cuts or bruises then people tend to assume that they are OK... But if you’ve seen one of those crash-test dummy films, where they simulate a crash, then you may remember that the dummies’ heads are thrown back and forward at a frightening pace, even if the crash is at low speed. The rapid, whip-like head movement is the reason it’s called whiplash and it is extremely rare that a person involved in such an incident escapes without some kind of injury. Often whiplash will not cause pain straight away so many people fail to get themselves checked out; then a few years on there is a bigger and more stubborn problem to solve.

HELPED: Cristobal Mestre Segui.

This is a great pity because if the condition were treated straight away then it could be eradicated before worsening. What is a whiplash injury exactly? As mentioned it could be as a result of a car crash but it could also be due to another kind of trauma like playing rugby or simply by having a fall. These violent movements cause injury to the muscles, ligaments,

spinal joints and nerves in the neck and spine. What does that all mean for the patient? If the whiplash injury is left uncorrected then nerves can get ‘pinched’, causing headaches, blurred vision, nausea, dizziness, poor balance, neck/ shoulder/arm pain, and pins and needles in the hands. Our chiropractors have plenty of experience in successfully treating whiplash injuries. So if you’ve been in an accident or are looking for advice then contact us. We will be happy to help. Cristobal Mestre Segui’s testimonial: “I had a car accident

(whiplash) eight months ago. The doctors put me in a collar and gave me painkillers and a few days later I was just perfect. For the last three months I’d been suffering from headaches and stiffness in shoulders and neck. The pain wouldn’t let me sleep and pills wouldn’t help me at all. I never thought this pain was related to the accident I had until I went to see a chiropractor. Since I started the treatment the pain has gone and now I sleep like a baby!” If you have had a car accident or whiplash of any kind, please call 965 200 005 to see one of the chiropractors at our clinics in Alicante or Denia.

Babies remember music played whilst in womb SCIENTISTS believe that babies who were played music whilst still in the womb remembered the tune months after being born. Researchers at the University of Helskini (Finland) gave a CD to 12 pregnant women and asked them to play it five times a week during the last three months of pregnancy before destroying the CD after giving birth to ensure any memory of the songs came from pregnancy. The researchers said that the babies could remember the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star up to four months after birth. The researchers believed: “These results show that babies are capable of learning at a very young age and that the effects of learning remain apparent in the brain for a long time.” However, the study did point out that playing classical music in the womb may not be a way of boosting a baby’s intelligence later on in life.

Unborn babies recall music up to four months after birth.

Dress-size matters SIZE 16 women are among the happiest and most comfortable in their own skin, according to a new study. The research found 74 per cent are happy with their appearance, nearly twice as many as the 42 per cent who are size six. And 49 per cent of women whose weight has fluctuated in the past three years, reveal they were at their happiest with a fuller, size 16 figure. The research also found 52 per cent of size six women would like to be curvier. The results showed women sized 14 to 18, have a more positive frame of mind when it comes to their appearance. And in comparison, those sized six to 10 are much more critical of their look, with just 59 per cent saying they are happy with their appearance. The findings also suggest size six ladies are often envious of those with curves, with 35 per cent wishing for a fuller figure because it’s ‘sexier’.

OT far from Costa shorelines lies the wreck of a once proud ocean liner. Was the MV Monte Rosa cursed by fate? The ship’s damnation was to dog every nautical league of its last voyage. Setting out from Japan in February 1954, its 1,276 passengers and crew had every reason to look forward to a pleasant voyage. Their ocean odyssey would be crowned by a homecoming to an England many had not seen for years. Passengers included military families of servicemen based in the Far East. Various were survivors of the Korean War. Among the wounded were veterans of the Battle of the Hook. Many were stretcher-carried up the gangways, The ‘Dukes’ from the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment, outnumbered in battle by five to one, had taken honours but casualties, too. The three-week anticipated passage to Port Said in Egypt took an excruciating eight weeks to accomplish. It must have brought great relief to all on board when Monte Rosa finally limped into Port Said. Now, only the Mediterranean lay between them and England.

Those aboard endured eight weeks of hell

The liner had known far happier days. It had once cruised the sun-drenched Aegean, Ionian, Adriatic and other seas that make up the Mediterranean. However, that was before the 1939-1945 World War.

From 1930 to 1945, the 13,882-tonne liner had been one of Germany’s fleet of super liners. Built by Hamburg shipbuilders Bohm and Voss the Monte Rosa was one of five sister-ships. Under the Kraft Durche Freude (Strength through Joy) leisure scheme Monte Rosa was to later provide German workers and their families the opportunity to take cruises that were previously the preserve of the elite. During the war the liner was used as a troopship. Departing the Egyptian port, the ill-fated liner embarked on the last leg of its voyage. But, sailing off Algiers an engine room fire resulted in a cataclysmic explosion. Four crew members were killed. The rescue of the remaining 1,276 passengers and crew was successful, but the hulk, whilst being towed to Gibraltar, sank beneath the waves. The Monte Rosa, seized as a war prize in 1945 and renamed MV Empire Windrush, pioneered West Indian immigration to Britain. Other liners soon joined in the massive Caribbean exodus. However, the MV Monte Rosa aka MV Empire Windrush will forever be known for its part in changing the face of Britain forever.

Time to plant winter garlic

Dick Handscombe

Gardening Corner By Spain’s best known expatriate gardening author living in Spain for 25 years.

N

OVEMBER and December are popular months for planting over-wintering garlic. The plants that grow can be harvested at two stages of growth: As young stems when like large spring onions. Grown to maturity for harvesting bulbs for storing in the late spring. Since garlic needs little space, crops can be grown in large flowerpots on apartment terraces as well as in raised beds and the open garden. How to grow Garlic is best grown by sowing individual cloves or segments broken off from sizeable bulbs. Plant in a friable, well-draining soil which has been manured for preceding crops but not in recently manured soils. However, if you have a wood-burning stove or an autumn bonfire the ashes can be worked into the soil before planting or sprinkled around growing corms to top up the soil’s natural potash levels.

If you have a heavy soil, mix in some sand to improve drainage and place a little sand under each clove when planted. It is wise to water garlic less than onions and if your vegetable plot is watered by a traditional flooding from irrigation channels or is liable to flood after heavy autumn rains, it’s wise to sow garlic on the ridges between the flooded growing strips or specially prepared ridges in the normal growing areas. Raised beds are excellent

for growing garlic as the soil conditions are right and cloves can be planted only eight to 10 centimetres apart, although double that will often yield larger bulbs. When planting, if the soil is well prepared, it is sufficient to push each corm down into the soil until the tip is covered with two or three centimetres of soil. If planted more shallowly they can rise out of the ground after rain or when the roots start to grow. Alternatively, dig narrow

GROWING: Sow individual cloves.

trenches or individual holes with a narrow trowel or stick. The only care during the growing season will be to ensure they don’t dry out, and weeding. By the way, garlic planted under or between rose bushes can help deter fungal attacks and aphids. ©Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com November 2013

Planners criticise roundabouts

T

HE property boom may be long over with the construction of new buildings grinding to a halt in recent years, but the construction of roundabouts does not seem to have been affected. Francisco Toscano, Socialist Mayor of Dos Hermanas, Sevilla, blamed TV broadcasts of the Tour de France and former Mayor of Las Rozas Santiago Bonifacio, who used to comment about being “amazed” to see the “elegance and fluidity” of traffic flows absorbed by large French roundabouts without needing traffic lights. Today, Dos Hermanas has more than 100 roundabouts along with Las Rozas (Madrid) which claims to be the only Spanish town of over 50,000

inhabitants without traffic lights. Town planner Jose Maria Ezquiaga said that roundabouts are useful tools to regulate traffic at intersections, but they are not the only solution: “There are major roads such as in Castellana, regulated by traffic lights that work just as well or better. “Roundabouts work when the size and design is suited to the intensity of the traffic, but many create more problems than they solve.” Some also criticise the design and addition of monuments and sculptures on roundabouts saying they distract drivers. Last year, 7 per cent of injury accidents on roads, occurred at roundabouts. ROUNDABOUTS: No shortage.

Evil pair preyed on children An EWN special report WHEN two seemingly respectable young Scottish men, Charlie and Will, arrived in Albir near Benidorm in the summer of 2003 they were readily accepted into the local community. Before long they had secured jobs, cooking and washing pots. Little were people to know

that Charlie and Will were Charles O’Neill and William Lauchlan, convicted paedophiles and murder suspects. In 1997, they had murdered Allison McGarrigle but had avoided being charged. The mother-of-three had threatened to expose their serial abuse of young boys and then threatened no more, as she was strangled, stuffed into

a bin and then dumped in the sea. However, rumours soon began to spread through Albir. The pair was regularly seen chatting to youngsters and inviting them back to their home, a converted singledecker bus they had bought with funds sent to them by a mysterious benefactor in Scotland.

WELL STOCKED: Everything you need for your pet.

Long healing process LAST week I told how BB, my Rottweiler had become aggressive toward my daughter following his lifesaving operation for bloat. On the morning of my radio show when I went downstairs, I heard BB talking to me. Many of you will understand that dogs do talk to us in many ways. His is a baby yap, one that cannot be ignored. I was delighted because I had not heard this since he had come home. I immediately went upstairs and informed Susan that he was my old BB again. After my radio show, I decided to have a chat

with Nazli from the Pointer Clinic, explaining I had a major problem with BB and also, in spite of eating greedily, he was losing weight. I asked her if the operation could be one of the causes. Nazli explained it can

take six to eight months for the wound from the operation to heal and after such an operation he will feel uncomfortable when lying in certain positions. That could certainly be the cause of him being grumpy and wary when we were going to touch where he was feeling extra tender. I have known Nazli about 20 years and trust her professionally. Now BB is having extra food (four meals a day) and we only touch him when he comes to us and not his body. We just tickle him under the chin. Nazli did emphasise that he is not out of the woods yet and time, patience and love will work with the healing process. Meanwhile, my daughter Susan, whom he had ‘gone for,’ will take him for short walks. I will update readers next month. For local radio log onto www.talkradioeurope.com

New Toyota RAV4 for New Year JAPANESE manufacturer Toyota has introduced a series of improvements to its RAV4 model for next year. The fourth generation of Toyota’s compact sports utility vehicle has seen more features added with an all-wheel drive engine line-up, new equipment and new technology. The all-wheel drive version of the 2014 RAV4 combines the Euro 5 compliant 2.0 litre D-4D turbodiesel with the Integrated Dynamic Drive System, Toyota’s all-wheel drive technology. The Integrated Dynamic Drive System enhances performance, handling and safety under all driving conditions, the manufacturer claims. Using information from various sensors (speed, steering angle, and yaw rate), the system continuously controls the torque transfer between the front and rear wheels via an electromagnetically controlled coupling positioned in front of the rear differential. Front to rear torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with frontwheel drive (100:0) automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve petrol consumption. For off-road driving, the system allows drivers to lock torque distribution in a fixed, 50:50 ratio to speeds up to 40km/h. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, the 1,998cc engine develops

124hp/91kW at 6,000rpm, and 310Nm of torque between 1,600 and 2,400rpm. The 2014 RAV4 will be available in a new Dark Brown Metallic body colour with a new, angular, 10spoke 18” alloy wheel design. The interior may now be finished in a choice of four colour schemes: Black, Grey, Terracotta and new Beige, which features two-tone seats and a

RAV4: Facing the future. leather finish to the main dashboard panel and central door panels. Equipment upgrades will also define the 2014 RAV, which will be available from €26,000. The vehicle now incorporates Toyota Touch 2, a system featuring a 6” full colour WVGA touch screen in high resolution. Both safety and driver

convenience are further enhanced by the availability of a new Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system. The RCTA system employs the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) radar to alert the driver backing out of a parking space to approaching vehicles which may not be visible in either the rear view monitor or door mirrors.
