Billposters to be prosecuted BUSINESSES have been given until the end of the year to remove ‘illegal’ billposts from Mojacar walls. After that they face the threat of town hall action against unauthorised publicity. It is part of a campaign started two years ago by Mojacar Town Hall to improve the aesthetics of the beach area, adopting among others, the measure to remove illegal or unauthorised posters. It said they gave a disorderly and chaotic appearance to the surroundings. Pavements, gardens and public spaces are some of the areas in which signs or posters cannot be put up.

BBC takes tapas in Almeria THE movie Exodus continues to feature in headlines around the world. This week a film crew from the BBC visited Almeria City where they were seen filming in one of the city’s most famous bars, Casa
Puga. The crew were filming the actors dining and sampling tapas in different establishments. Aaron Paul, one of the film’s main stars, was seen signing autographs and posing for photos with the people of Almeria.
Filming at the Macael quarries, which at times lasted all night with several fires being lit, has now finished. It has moved on to Tabernas, namely Benavides, where a town set has been built especially for the movie.

Five projects come from Almeria Province. From Tinseltown, Los Angeles, in the US, there has been a science fiction entry. Latin America, Japan and New Zealand have also submitted entries and there is a ‘hallucinogenic surrealist film’ from Ethiopia. The 31 selected projects include
genres for all tastes. This year broke all records for participation in the Short Film Festival, which will be held from December 3 to 7. There were 1,446 projects submitted, compared to 1,167 last year. This is a 23 per cent increase on the previous year and almost 300 more than in 2012.

Never forgotten Families remember the dead

HILE Halloween has ballooned into a massive worldwide event, in Spain the more traditional celebrations fall on All Saints’ Day. November 1 is a national holiday and queues form at cemeteries as families remember the dead. Families buy flowers, visit the tombs of deceased relatives and spend the night praying for them. Sweetmeats known as ‘Saints’ Bones’ are made with marzipan filled with egg yolk. They are shaped in the form of a bone and can be found in most cake shops, along with ‘buñuelos’ which are fried dough balls with sweet toppings. Celebrating Halloween has become popular in Spain in recent years, with many stores selling foodstuffs and decorations, and schools holding costume parties. Some TV channels show horror films or Halloween Buñuelos and pumpkins

Spain in mourning for Manolo SPAIN has been mourning the loss of one its greatest entertainers, Almeriaborn Manolo Escobar, who has died age 82. The farewell was especially touching in Almeria, where he was born in El Ejido in1931. In a career that
spanned more than 50 years and 80 albums Manolo was not only an artist who succeeded in music, his record Y Viva España has sold more than 10 million copies, but also on celluloid with two of his 20 film credits among the top 10 most-watched in the history of Spanish cinema. MANOLO ESCOBAR: The famous singer had made Benidorm his home. Gongora, mayor of El Ejido, declared three days of official mourning for the town’s favourite son. The singer died in Benidorm, where he lived. Within two days around 8,000 people had visited the chapel installed in the city hall
of Benidorm to pay their respects. Tributes poured in from around the world as well as from the Spanish Royal Family. Manolo had requested in his will that his ashes
be scattered among the seas of Almeria, Badalona and Benidorm.
Investigation begins after fatal accident at quarry THE Marble industry in Macael suffered a blow with the death of another worker in a quarry. Manuel Rubio died when, for reasons that are yet to be clarified, he was run over by a large digger whilst it was reversing. He was the third worker in the marble industry to die this year in a work-related accident. The incident occurred at the
quarry known as Umbria del Pozo, owned by Gutierrez Mena last week. Although emergency services were called to the site, nothing could be done to help the worker, who lived in Macael. The local mayor, Raul Martinez, who visited the scene upon hearing the news, showed his dismay at the accident. “We have had two tough
years, because of the drop in activity due to the crisis, this type of tragic accident with a fatal outcome makes things worse. “The company complies with the safety measures and these are accidents that are due to human error unfortunately.” Guardia Civil officers and Works inspectors have launched an investigation into the accident.

Homes meeting off till November A MEETING organised to tackle the problem of illegal properties in the Almanzora Valley had to be postponed at the last minute. Now a new date has been set for November 11 at 12.30pm.
The date was agreed by the Association of Entrepreneurs and Professionals Albox (AEPA) to enable the attendance of the Junta de Andalucia Planning Officer in Almeria, Jose Manuel Ortiz. The initial meeting was to be attended by the 10 mayors whose municipalities are especially affected by this problem: Zurgena, Arboleas, Albox, Taberno, Cantoria, Fines, Partaloa, Albanchez, Líjar and Olula del Rio. Tourist board on a mission ALMERIA tourist board is set to visit London. The Vice President of the Provincial Council, Javier Aureliano Garcia, has confirmed the participation of the Tourist Board of Almeria at the World Travel Market in London in November. During the visit they will hold meetings with tour operators and airlines. It will also be an opportunity to clean up the image of Almeria after the demolition of two houses owned by British citizens in Las Terreras, Cantoria . “We have to clean up the image of Almeria, after policies being made by the Junta de Andalucia, especially with the British sector. Now more than ever we must try to prevent the British market from falling in our
province, despite the Junta,” Garcia said, in reference to the impact the demolition of the two houses has had. The Tourist Board intends to launch a major promotion, in addition to closing agreements with tour operators they will attend a reception at the Spanish Embassy in London. “We will be able to socialise with Spanish authorities and talk about the problems of Almeria to see if they can help us out from there,” said Garcia. At the World Travel Market, which is held between November 4 and 7, the tourist board will try to confirm deals with airlines and tour operators which were already sealed last year with the aim of maintaining them throughout 2014.

Feria fun begins THE Feria de los Santos gets under way today (Thursday) in Albox. Among the highlights is live music every day from Friday to Tuesday in the municipal tent, as well as music at the midday fair and in the evening from 10pm. There is a bird show from Friday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm in the indoor market area. On Saturday at 4pm is a horse show with Rosanna Porras followed by a horse ribbon race in the Rambla at 5pm. At 10am on Sunday is a bikers meet, with motorbikes passing through the streets before heading up to the Saliente Monastery to make a floral offering to the Virgen del Saliente. A Classic Car Show will take place on Monday in Plaza Nueva from 11am. The feria closes on Tuesday with a party for senior citizens at 9pm.
BRITAIN has appointed a new ambassador to Spain. Simon Manley, CMG, a member of the UK’s Diplomatic Service since 1990, has taken over from Giles Paxman as Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain and non-resident Ambassador to Andorra He said: “I am delighted to be here in Spain and look forward to strengthening our broad and deep bilateral relationship. Spain is a key ally within the European Union and NATO and is one of our most important trading partners.” Mr Manley, who is married with three young daughters, said he was eagerly awaiting meeting and working with companies in both Spain and the UK, whether established investors or new entrants keen to secure a foothold in their respective markets. He has served as the FCO’s Director Defence
and Strategic Threats (2008-2011), leading the government’s international counter-terrorist, counter-proliferation and counter-narcotics efforts, as head of Counter-Terrorism Policy (2006-2008) and as head of the EU Economic, Central Europe and Ireland Department (20022006). He has been posted to the UK’s Mission to the UN in New York (1993-1998), where he worked on Yugoslavia and UN reform, and has twice been seconded to the EU. Mr Manley was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 2009 and a Commander of the Polish Order of Merit in 2004. ALMERIA PROVINCE has closed the third quarter of the year with an unemployment rate of 38.7 per cent. And it is not even the worst rate in Andalucia. Both Jaen and Granada have worse ones. The total number of unemployed in Almeria Province stood at 135,800 people at the end of September. According to a Labour Force Survey by the National Statistics Institute, there were a total of 214,400 actively employed in the province. By province in Andalucia, Jaen leads in the number of unemployed, with a rate of 40.3 per cent, followed by Granada, with 38.8, Cordoba 37.6, Cadiz 37.4, Huelva 35.4, Malaga 34.3 and Sevilla with the lowest at 33.8 per cent . Nationally, unemployment fell by 72,800 people in the third quarter from the previous quarter, less than 1.22 per cent, bringing the total number of unemployed to 5,904,700 people. Thus, the national unemployment rate fell to the end of September to 25.98 per cent.

Lights set to go out in Mojacar FOR the second year in a row, as an energy-saving measure, Mojacar Town Hall is going to reduce the provision of lighting in the town’s streets. It will run from October
25 to March 31, 2014. The alternate turning off of street lights will apply in Avenida Andalucia, the road leading to the football ground, Paseo del Mediterraneo, Calle

Lions spectacles hit new heights
THE Torrevieja Costa Lions Club passed another milestone this week when its President Janette Bennett delivered more than 1,000 pairs of used spectacles to the Centro de Reciclaje de Gafas ‘Melvin Jones’ in San Vicente del Raspeig, Alicante. Emilio Moreno, the centre’s director, was delighted to receive the donation which brings the total provided by Torrevieja Lions to over 9,000 pairs in six years. This achievement is outstanding for the club and has been achieved with great support from the customers and staff of Specsavers in Torrevieja. The Lions have also agreed a collaboration with Francisco Jurado, Director of Specsavers in Guardamar del Segura. Nationally, Specsavers have launched an initiative in all their Spanish stores to collect used spectacles to donate to their local Lions Clubs for onward delivery to the recycling centre. The used spectacles are cleaned, graded and reframed at the recycling centre where they are then held awaiting orders from all round the world where eye care is not readily available.

Fruit policy was a big blunder... MERCADONA makes few blunders although owner Juan Roig recently admitted to one. The chain erred when it switched to pre-packaged fruit and vegetables in 2008. “People want a good aubergine picked yesterday and sold today,” he said. “You won’t see grocery stores in areas with a Mercadona, but you’ll find eight greengrocers,” he claimed. “Without going to Harvard, greengrocers were clever and went to Harvacete instead,” Roig said, combining the Spanish love of a pun with a reference to agricultural province Albacete. The supermarkets sell loose vegetables and fruit
once more, although customers now bag and weigh their own. Citing other policy changes, Roig pointed out that in 2009 Mercadona bought little Spanish fish but imported from all over the world. In contrast, the chain will buy 40,000 tons of Spanish fish next year, most of it directly from local fish markets. This policy will eventually extend to all food sections. He does not belong to the ‘buy Spanish’ school, Roig said. “You have to buy the best product at the best possible price. But by buying products in your own country, you generate wealth and obtain logistical advantages.”

WE’RE all different, us humans, that’s what makes us unique. So obviously, when it comes to applying for a job, we have our own way of going about writing a CV or prepping for an interview. And according to the confessions of a recruitment consultant, who wishes to remain anonymous, some job seekers are that little bit quirkier than others. For example, if you didn’t get a call back for a job it could have been the questionable photo attached to your CV that let you down. According to our recruitment source, some jobseekers just don’t seem to realise that an application for a job isn’t the same posting on a
Facebook page. Rather than the professional head and shoulders shot normally required, apparently recruitment agencies spend half their day bent over in laughter looking at the ridiculous pictures jobseekers send in. Like what? Well, how about a CV, where the first page is an A4 size photo of a woman wearing little hot pants and reclining on a tree. Or another classic mistake
that is - a photo on a CV of a girl wearing a Santa hat, who is clearly inebriated at a party. Recruitment agencies even get sent family photos where the jobseeker writes something like: “I’m the one in the blue shirt.” Some people have been known to send entire cover letters in capital letters too, while others write CVs in Romanesque-style fonts that look like calligraphy, or use

fluorescent colours. “No, no, no,” say recruitment experts. When it comes to CV writing the more normal and classic the style the better. And it doesn’t massively matter if your CV is longer than two pages as long as it contains interesting content, spelt correctly. Although the trend at the moment among many young graduate CVs is to send one page with really small font, which some recruitment experts like. And finally, nowadays with the internet everything moves at a fast pace, so as a jobseeker there is no time to be sitting around twiddling fingers. New jobs arriving to recruitment agencies are apparently posted online almost instantly, and recruiters begin to receive CVs within seconds. These CVs are sent on to the client within one or two hours, so it’s vital to be fast if you want to be interviewed.

Spain inching its way to recovery... THE jobless queues in Spain shrank more than expected to below 26 per cent in September. Although still amongst the highest levels in Europe, it was good news at the same time that Spain officially exited recession
for the first time in 27 months. It raises hopes that Spain may have finally turned the corner in its fight for economic recovery. The unemployment rate stood at 25.98 per cent, down from 26.26 per cent and
beating a predicted rate of 26.1 per cent. According to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security, the number of jobless is now at its lowest level since June 2007. Unemployment fell by 72,800 to 5.904 million in the third quarter of the year, still
well above the 5.778 million, or 25.02 per cent a year ago. Private businesses were the driving factor in the increase in jobs. While 12,600 jobs were lost in the public sector, 52,000 were created in the private sector, according to the INE National Institute of Statistics. On top of that there has been a migration back to their homelands of the weakest. These did not include thousands of immigrants Santander, Sabadell and Bankinter, unable to find work. THE eurozone’s biggest bank, Santander, has posted a big rise in profits as it put aside less money to cover bad debt in Spain. Banco Santander’s chairman, Emilio Botín, said: “After several years of high levels of write-offs and reinforcement of capital, Banco Santander is prepared for a new period of increased profitability.” Santander was not alone as Bankinter and Sabadell also had bigger profits in September, despite net income at all three falling. Net income is what banks take in from interest on loans less deposit costs. Spanish banks have seen income fall but profits rise mainly because they have had to put aside less cash to cover bad debt, particulary on property deals,

Time for a rethink on sex trade HARDLY a week goes by without another report of women being ‘freed’ having been forced to work as prostitutes. Whilst I am sure this is a problem in many countries, surely the ‘turn a blind eye’ attitude many people in Spain seem to have to prostitution is one of the main causes of the abuse of these women. The way forward is to tightly control the ‘trade’. At the moment it seems to exist in a legal grey area, with rules differing from place to place. Prostitution should be expressly permitted in law, but only by licensed operators in licensed premises, subject to inspection and control by the police and health authorities. Coupled with a total ban on street prostitution, it would go a long way to solving the problems of criminal gangs intimidating women into becoming ‘sex slaves’. Anthony Jones, Mazarron (Alicante)
Take notice IT’S amazing how the accumulation of rubbish in the streets has woken the coastal residents up to the fact that they are always short-changed by the administration in Orihuela. The minority government is struggling to make the money go round, and we on the coast are the losers. They are spending the money on projects in Orihuela and the surrounding villages in the hope that they will get reelected. There is no need for the government to take the coast into consideration, as we have no representation. That is in part the fault of residents not bothering to vote in the local elections, and the Press not even bothering to have someone present when the plenary meetings are being held. People on the coast are not aware what gets decided in

Well done! WHAT a lovely story about the AECC and the Pink Ladies! As someone who had a cancer scare (thankfully now having had the all-clear) I think it is wonderful what these ladies are doing for no reward. Bloomin’ disaster RE ‘Red tide disaster’ (Axarquia, Issue 1477) where fishing boats have had to remain tied up for months as the shellfish beds have been closed due to an algal ‘bloom’. This is the inevitable consequence of pollution. Nitrates from fertilisers plus sewage swept to sea feed the algae. Combined with warmer temperatures, these toxic
blooms will become more and more common, causing huge economic loss to the fishing industry and untold damage to the environment. It is in the best interests of everyone to have stricter controls of what we put into the environment. Mankind cannot continue to poison the land and sea with impunity forever more. Trade issues PERHAPS someone could explain why the world’s major manufacturing industries are concentrated in China, leaving the European workforce depleted of work opportunities. There appears to be a considerable number of contradictory, two-faced UK and European politicians who are quite willing to carbon tax our own homegrown industries into oblivion, but yet trade heavily with countries which pollute not only themselves but also the world. Britons first IN 1993, I went to Egypt, stayed at a hotel near Aswan. We chatted with Betani, a lovely Egyptian lad. He had not heard of Elvis or The Beatles, but he did say that he wanted to marry a nice English girl because “I can live in England and the Government will give me money!” It is no wonder the hardworking people of the UK are angry. Another occasion a guy in Calais, France, had been caught trying to enter the UK. The customs officer said: “Why don’t you stay in France?” He replied: “No, I want to go to England because I will be given money.” The UK has been a global joke for many years with respect to its benefits system. Their problem I READ the letter by D Blanchette (Issue 1476) about overpopulation in Third World countries and wondered how the women even get pregnant and carry through to birth if they are so emaciated. Anorexia usually stops a woman from having periods and therefore pregnancy. It takes two non-starved people to create a pregnancy. So are we being conned? Old people in England have to starve and freeze whilst hospitals, etc, are underfunded, so let these countries fend for themselves. Janet Hayden (By email)

UK Taxman Targets Rental Income s tax authorities everywhere look to increase tax revenue, rental income is coming under closer scrutiny. If you own and rent out property, whether in Spain, the UK or elsewhere, you need to be sure that you are paying tax correctly. It is quite easy to make mistakes, especially if the property is located in one country and you are resident in another. In the UK, HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) calculates that it loses up to £500 million a year from underpaid tax on rental income. It has launched a ‘Let Property Campaign’ to encourage landlords to regularise their position, whether they have made genuine errors or deliberately not declared income. It is open to UK resident landlords and covers holiday lettings, including properties owned abroad in countries like Spain. A press release from HMRC warned: “HMRC will use information it holds about property rental in the UK and abroad, along

For those that fail to come forward, higher penalties - or even criminal prosecution - could follow.” With increasing exchange of information between countries, you can expect the UK authorities to find out about Spain property and vice versa. Where necessary, the UK and Spanish tax
authorities can help each other collect tax. What are your tax obligations if you are a UK resident owning property in Spain? If you own property in Spain but are a UK resident, you need to comply with both the UK and Spanish regulations. As a UK taxpayer, you need to declare the rent on your annual UK tax return. Expenses can be deducted. Any gains on sale need to be declared and taxed in the UK. Overseas property must also be declared as part of your estate for UK inheritance tax purposes. Here in Spain, rental income from the property owned by nonresidents is taxed at 24.75% (on net income after allowable expenses for EU residents). If you do not rent out the property, or when it is unlet, a notional income is deemed to arise and tax is due on this. When you sell the property you
will pay tax on the capital gain under the savings income regime, at rates of between 21% and 27%. The net equity value of the property is currently liable to wealth tax if valued at over the individual allowance of €700,000 for individuals and €1,400,000 for couples owning in joint names. A mortgage can reduce its taxable value. The property will be subject to succession tax, which can be expensive for non-residents. Spain and the UK apply their own tax rules so the taxable amount is different in each country. You do not however have to pay tax twice. You can offset the Spanish tax paid against the UK liability to avoid double taxation. If the UK tax is higher, further tax will be due in the UK. If the UK tax is lower, you do not get a refund for the difference. This article looks at Spanish
rental income and gains for UK residents, but you will have similar tax considerations if you are resident in Spain and own UK property. It can be hard enough getting tax planning right in one country; getting it right when it involves two countries is even more complicated. DON’T often follow up on mail I receive, mainly because I think you can get too bogged down with a single subject. Frankly, with a short blurb such as mine, there simply isn’t enough space for such columnist luxury. I will, however, make an exception with regard to last week’s published missive, which likened the British expat community in Spain to the immigrants now threatening to swamp the UK. I agree many of the British are inclined to stick to their own, both socially and abodewise. It is, I suppose a tribal and comfort zone situation, and in many cases (not mine, I hasten to add) perfectly understandable. But there are one or two glaring differences. We don’t strut around with posters insulting and indeed openly threatening our Spanish hosts. It is only since the influx of the Muslim extremists that all the real troubles have reared up. It is a large section of the Islamic followers who have caused most of the unrest and bitterness. A situation that is now finally
being openly discussed by disgruntled British inhabitants and indeed many politicians. If a whole section of people from another religion and culture make every effort to disrupt and change the society that has taken them in, who can blame its locals for getting annoyed? You can’t really get more ungrateful than that! To compare British expats to these people is not only ridiculous, but to my mind also quite insulting. I think most of us are extremely grateful that we can live freely in the sunshine with our colourful and generally laid-back hosts. OK, so perhaps many could make more effort with the language, and I agree there are those who moan too much. Mind you, these are mainly people that moan about just about anything anyway! But heaven forbid we should try and change their culture, religion or laws. If I personally didn’t agree with the way our hosts lived, I would simply ‘up the roots’ and move to a country I did find ‘acceptable’. It’s a pity the same decision is not being made by many of those who are not satisfied with the British culture and way of life! As a final note I couldn’t make head nor tail of last week’s missive likening me to Sean Connery. Was it complimentary or insulting? Don’t ask me, I only scribble here!

Sick of it I USED to enjoy reading your free newspaper, especially the intelligent, political comments by a couple of contributors. They would highlight the real criminals, those people who gambled in the banking institutions. The banks the people of Europe have bailed out and now are facing the consequences of austerity with lost jobs, homes and much more. All we get now are the rantings of Leapy Lee. ICK CLEGG is not everyone’s favourite, even - or particularly amongst Lib-Dems. Joking apart, his remark that “Parents don’t want ideology to get in the way of their children’s education” will raise a hollow laugh in Spain. Education minister Jose Ignacio Wert’s ideology is now stamped all over the Spanish system, but in one respect he cannot be faulted. Students must obtain at least 5.5 in access exams to obtain a university grant although the cut-off mark is 5. This is patently unfair, say Wert’s critics, but the unloved minister pointed out that grants are not loans but funded by the taxpayer. “A greater effort is asked,” he claimed. There are many motives for criticising Wert but they should not include his policies on grants.

Strasbourg steps in TO the Spanish government’s intense frustration, the Strasbourg court of Human Rights has backed ETA terrorist Ines del Rio. Del Rio was already in prison when remission through work was removed from Spain’s Penal Code in 1995.
Responsible for 23 deaths, she received a 3,823-year prison term but under existing Spanish law would serve only 30 years. With remission she should have left prison in 2008. Instead, the authorities applied the same formula used with Etarra Henri Parot in 2006, deducting good behaviour allowances from each count and not the 30-year maximum. Applying the Parot Doctrine retrospectively is illegal, Strasbourg has said. Initially this ruling affects only Ines del Rio, although other Etarras will walk free. But they and Del Rio return to a different Spain from the one they left - one where there is no place for ETA which declared a permanent ceasefire two years ago. Furthermore, critics forget the Parot Doctrine still applies to Etarras or anyone else with sentences imposed after 1995.
Number One is first DOLORES DE COSPEDAL, secretary general of the national PP party, brought a lawsuit against the party’s ex-treasurer, Luis Barcenas. She was defending “her personal
honour” following his allegations of illegal funding and salary top-ups. Barcenas attended the hearing via video link as he is on remand for fraud and money-laundering. Unrepentantly contradicting De Cospedal he told the court he personally had handed her envelopes of black money. The party’s groan was audible all over Spain. Everyone had stopped talking about Barcenas and De Cospedal has stirred things up again. She gives the strong impression she is out to look after herself. This is common amongst politicians but usually they make a better job of concealing it.
Only here for beer WITH little money around and European elections looming, politicians fear they will not be sufficiently in the public eye. Inaugurations, openings and closings are thin on the ground and they will be seen at fewer politically-expedient functions. If they but knew it, they harvest votes only from those with invites. And they are only interested in the lunch or dinner after.

NUMBER of amusing statements have been attributed to Winston Churchill. These have earned him applause but the handclapping is often undeserved. When confronted by Bessie Braddock MP who admonished the wartime leader for being drunk he replied, “and you are ugly but I will be sober in the morning and you will still be ugly.” Churchill was copying an English quip of some lineage. It was old when WC Fields used the jibe in the 1930s movie It’s a Gift. This one-liner has been around for 130 years. Public life has always been WINSTON CHURCHILL: Copied a famous one-liner. a rich source of colourful
language. Lord Sandwich spoke plainly when he addressed the editor of The North Briton. “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of the pox.” The journalist swiftly replied. “That depends, sir, on whether I embrace your politics or your mistress.” This exchange has wrongly been attributed to Gladstone and Disraeli. This prompted Jack E Leonard to surmise: “There’s nothing wrong with you that reincarnation won’t cure.” A young violinist after trying to impress George Bernard Shaw asked the playwright what he should play next. “Dominoes” was the curt reply. The American filmmaker Billy Wilder spoke for many who despair at modern music. “He has van Gogh’s ear for music.”

T’S the silly season - you know, the time of year when Government party leaders disappear on their summer hols and the papers are plastered with silly stories - still with us and merging with Halloween? Especially about health scares and end-ofthe-world scenarios. For instance, earlier this month, astronomers at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in the Ukraine discovered an asteroid that doomsday headlines warn could hit the Earth in 2032. Well, could it hurry up a bit: Bruce Willis mightn’t be around any more to save us come 2032. Meanwhile, should we await Government advice about the importance of sheltering under a sturdy dining room table with a warm, fleecy blanket, a torch, a bottle of mineral water and checking our life insurance policies?

Now, calm down, people! Realistically, the asteroid has a 99.998 per cent chance of missing Earth. We should be more concerned about what’s happening to the environment and the potential depletion of
the world’s natural resources. Mankind’s the biggest threat to life on Earth. The other misleading headline concerned ‘research’ conducted at Glasgow University into the dietary risk factors of having a stroke from eating deep-fried Mars bars. Result of this ‘research’: findings below the normal scientific threshold for statistical significance. In other words, pointless.
Next week Glasgow University gets a £5 million (€5.86 million) government grant to figure out if water is wet. After that, a study of Scotland’s other favourite tipple: Sanatogen tonic wine. Followed by a major project to pin down the date of Easter. Which makes me wonder if all these health stories that are regularly trotted out aren’t belated April Fool jokes. Hardly a week goes by without the latest revelation that this or that is good/bad for us - take your pick. You know what I mean. Red wine is good for us - full of polyphenols and stuff - but only if we drink one unit a day. Or was it five or six... Maybe science reporters are getting hard pressed to come up with eye-catching headlines. One thing’s for sure, though. Health stories are getting more and more weird. Fact: short, dark-haired women are more likely to develop early menopause. I made this last bit up but you get the drift. Deep-fried cheesecake, anyone? Better times ahead... or not? THE good news keeps on coming. The Spanish economy has finally come out of recession. After 27 months of contraction the third quarter of the year saw growth in the economy. Tourism figures for Spain are up, with many regions recording record levels of visitors.

It causes difficulties with close up vision. In order to see nearby objects well the eye makes use of a focusing system called accommodation. This mechanism causes a change in the shape of the crystalline lens thereby bringing the image closer to the retina so that it can be seen more clearly. In young people this crystalline lens is soft and flexible which, with the help of some small muscles attached to it, changes its shape depending on the distance of the object, enabling it to be in focus on the retina. In adults this capability gradually deteriorates owing to rigidity of the crystalline lens and

as reading, using the computer or doing close work. Another accompanying symptom is usually ocular fatigue or even
severe headache. The symptoms are more acute in low light and at the end of the day. Longsightedness affects everyone in the same way even people who have never needed glasses before. Some people, at the age of longsightedness, read correctly in spite of the fact that it shouldn’t be so. This is because people with shortsightedness or myopic astigmatism, by having the focal point at a lesser distance and at rest, need to accomodate the crystalline lens less. This advantage can allow them, up to a certain point, to see more or less well close up. The most common treatment is to correct the sight with glasses, although there are three other types of solutions which could apply to each patient.
There are advantages and disadvantages to all treatments:Glasses: Suitable for all patients. There are three types, bifocal, trifocal and progressive lenses. Contact lenses: These require a minimum of skill for handling but have the added aggravation of not being able to see well close up for their insertion. Refractive surgery: At the moment this is still being perfected and is fundamentally by laser. Intraocular surgery: This is the implantation of multifocal lenses or accomodative lenses. fruit in takeover THE rare and costly Yuzu fruit from Japan is predicted to take the world by storm next year. It tastes like a cross between a lemon, mandarin and grapefruit and is already widely stocked in Asia. And now the popularity of this fruit is growing in Western cuisine and it’s being used to flavour everything from beer and chewing gum to vinegar and cocktails. Perhaps one of the reasons the fruit is becoming so popular is the fact that it has three times more vitamin C than a lemon, making it super-healthy. The fruit has already had some media exposure. Jamie Oliver has a recipe for home-made yuzu mayo which he drizzles over grilled scallops,

World’s strongest beer A SCOTTISH brewery claims it has created the strongest beer in the world. Brewmeister’s latest creation, Snake Venom, reaches a 67.5 per cent of alcohol by volume (ABV). This massive figure was achieved after a nine month development process in which both beer and Champagne yeast were used. Contrary to what it may seem, the Scottish beverage tastes like a beer rather than a spirit. Or so claim its creators, who describe its flavour as “malty and very pleasant.” The brew is presented with a yellow label warning drinkers to beware. Snake Venom can be bought online for £50 (€58.68) per bottle, a price that certainly matches its alcohol content. This is not the first time Brewmeister has released a beer to challenge people’s alcohol tolerance. Last year they launched Armageddon, a beer with ‘just’ 65 per cent ABV.

Starbucks makes cup of tea the next big trend STARBUCKS is starting a new venture to make tea the next big trend in hot drinks, and has opened its first ‘tea bar’ in New York City. The world renowned Seattle-based company says its new franchise will be known as the Teavana Tea Bar and will
promote a healthy environment to enjoy its selection of Teavana Fine Teas, with unique blends including Spiced Mandarin Oolong tea, a Pineaple Kona Pop or Blueberry Bliss iced tea. The Tea Bars will also serve small plates of healthy option food
including flatbreads and salads. Starbucks opened a similar tea shop last year near its headquarters under its Tazo brand and the company has said that next month, it will also be converted into a Teavana tea bar.

Sugar free Champagne launched for the calorie-conscious A LOW calorie Champagne has been launched. Champagne generally contains around 100 calories per glass. Sugar is added at the end of fermentation to ‘finish’ the Champagne with 12 - 17 per cent sugar being standard.
Now, Champagne maker Alexandre Penet has created the no sugar Brut Nature Cuvée Grand Cru, which contains just 60 calories a glass. The Champagne is available via Thomson and Scott website for £49 (€55) per bottle.

‘Rubbish’ restaurant opens in Copenhagen A NEW restaurant has taken the phrase ‘waste not, want not’ to new levels as it offers customers a menu made entirely from waste food. Rub and Stub in Copenhagen (Denmark) creates dishes using food which supermarkets and farmers would usually throw away. The menu changes daily and is dependent upon what surplus food has been donated that day. It is a non-profit venture, run and operated entirely by volunteers and caters for 60 guests every evening.

High society friends Last week I recounted how I took wealthy Philip Miller to Sevilla to see renowned Spanish bullfighter El Cordobes in action. The story continues… Ric Polansky

E talked as best friends should. Philip was inquisitive and wanted to know everything about the bulls - history, myths and just what made El Cordobes so famous? Oh, and how much money does he make? And who is his tax consultant? It all was a bit too convivial and friendly considering I hadn’t as yet secured tickets.

Yet, that one phrase careened between the crevices of my ears, ‘money is no object’. Maybe money was the solution and the escape? Then, the fault would be his. I parked close to the legendary plaza - the
Maenstraza as we had a full two hours before the corrida. “Philip, you know who Cordobes is, the greatest, most popular torero since Manolete. He hunts with Franco and fishes with cardinals. These
entradas are difficult to get, even for me. I’m gonna need about $1,000 to get us in.” He didn’t bat an eye and reached into his wallet and snapped out 10 crisp ‘C notes’ and off I sprinted praying to the gods of Sevilla. Buying bullfight tickets is an art form to combat the established cheats. I waited for the fools in line before me, all asking for the impossible and being rejected. I didn’t ask for tickets. I asked his name. “Paco, this is your lucky day. I am the bodyguard of an important Russian personage whose name I cannot divulge to you. BUT the CIA, the FBI and the United States embassy want this man to attend the corrida today. “For two tickets in the barrera (front row) I am willing to pay you $800 and a further $100 (propina) gift tax to you for those entrance tickets. Your failure to comply will result in an international incident.” He slammed them on the counter before I had finished speaking and I slid him most of the ‘C notes’ like it was an everyday transaction. Then back I raced to collect my client to whisk him off to the nearest bar
wherein I insisted we need finish at least one bottle of Jerez, “to please the Gods,” before admittance. Philip was slurring his words when I asked for la cuenta and made him leave a super exorbitant tip. We entered the plaza and

gradually worked our way down to the heralded and sanctified seats of the front row. There sitting on my right was none other than movie star Deborah Kerr and next to her Kennedy’s ex-press secretary Pierre Salinger, unmistakable with his large Havana cigar. I should have expected as much and plonked down my significant self without muttering a word of greeting and immediately waving for the beer guy. Rank has its privileges. I chugged a beer for Milwaukee courage then stood up and introduced myself as the ‘Indalo man’ guiding none other than Sir Phillip Miller, American Russian advisor to the Spanish Government. “More I regret I cannot divulge,” and with a toothy grin, bowed and further
proclaimed: “Señora Kerr, I believe we have met before, in Tijuana.” (Hemingway’s impact on the stars of celluloid was so dramatic that there never was a corrida held in T town that didn’t have the barrera packed by Hollywood’s elite during the 50s and 60s. But of course she thought she remembered me. I smiled that best condescending smirk I had and sat down and stared directly ahead, longing for the sound of the trumpets to announce the first bull. It happened just as I wished, that most beautiful of pronouncements: clear, invocative and curt. The first passes are ‘testing’. Just like a person is righthanded, bulls too favour one horn over the other. The peones (helpers) caped the bull just enough to allow the matador to study his adversary. Unimportant to the less knowledgeable, yet key to the ritual sacrifice. My brain flopped into an inconsequential pleasant lull when suddenly Philip bolted to his feet and screamed: “They’re tormenting that animal!” I couldn’t even blink, my mind frozen. What the hell would happen to him when the picadors arrived and he saw blood? “Come on, Rickey, we must go,” he exclaimed, but it felt upon deaf ears. “Philip, I have done what I promised, brought you here. You’ll have to wait for me outside, I cannot leave my friends Debbie and Pete.” Continued next week

ALLOWEEN is traditionally the most fearful of days: some of the costumes available in the shops should probably be rated 18 years or older and if your house is on the trick-or-treat circuit, there is always the ultimate fear that the visitor will deliver an unwanted trick, unsatisfied with the sweet offerings. Or worse, it may be an opportunistic tax inspector lurking in your neighbourhood. One segment of society, however, is surely beating the voodoo drum of joy at this increasingly popular tradition: the retailers. Last year in the US, Halloween expenditure amounted to a record $8 billion (€5.8 billion), while Brits spirited away some £300 million (€351 million) on all things orange and ghoulish, up from a mere £12 million (€14.06 million) only a decade ago, according to The Independent. But if Halloween, or ‘La noche de brujas’ as some call it here, is not your cup of witches’ brew, you should not lay the blame solely on the Americans, who have admittedly assimilated this season with such gusto and finesse.

Look no further than our forefathers from Scotland and Ireland who brought this predominantly Celtic tradition to the US centuries ago. It was not until the 1930’s, however, that the ‘trick or treat’ term was coined in relation to ritualised begging on Halloween and it did not become the ‘wholesome’ family pursuit it is seen as today until much later, only reaching most of Europe in the late 20th Century. Personally I am surprised it took so long; what with the immense money-making opportunity and our seeming fascination with all things occult, scary and morbid. In the US, Halloween lags only Christmas in
financial terms and accounts for a quarter of all sweets sold during the year. Yet come November 1, sugar highs have to be curtailed and any festivity-lag buried to head off to work or school. Not so in Spain - and much of Europe where All Saints Day is observed;
a day to visit the graves of family members, departed from this world. Halloween is also about the notion of life and death, yin and yang, or good versus evil something all humans tend to dwell on, regardless of religion,
race or background. So like it or not, this rather recent tradition is likely to go from strength to strength. If you still haven't the inclination or nerve to participate in these eerie festivities, may I recommend locking the doors, closing the curtains and turning off the lights to instead enjoy a good movie by candlelight. Some of my all-time favourites, for this particular occasion are The Blair Witch Project, Final Destination (there are four sequels, too, in case sleep eludes you) and The Sixth Sense. None are suitable for the kids, but then they will probably be out trick or treating with their friends. If this level of entertainment is not scary enough for you, then may I suggest opening a recent letter from the Hacienda or the Inland Revenue - an experience sure to send goosebumps down the spine of every living human being. Just remember not to open the door, should someone call...

T:Factor - Sing to Win!

ALLING everyone between the ages of 12 and 18! Telitec are launching T:Factor in the hunt for original singing and performance talent. Can you take a tune and make it your own? Have you got that extra something to be a true artist? The winner will enjoy a recording session in a top London studio where you can lay down your track with professional recording engineers. This is a competition so get competitive and give it your best! All you need is to be able to upload a video of you doing your stuff to
YouTube, and send in the link to T:Factor, who will make it available for your family and friends to vote, and keep on voting. There are three rounds in the competition: the initial round is for anyone to enter; the second round will include those who received enough votes, and again for the final round. You’ll need to tell everyone about it to get enough votes and stay in the competition.
How to get started Choose a song from the
list (right). You can cover it in any way you wish: instrumental, acapella, band or karaoke style, it’s up to you! Record your video and upload it to YouTube (you’ll need a YouTube account). Then fill out the entry form which tells T:Factor about you, and includes a link to your video. T:Factor will then start loading on the voting page and send you a link of where to find it. You’ll need to send the link to as many people as possible to stay in the competition. First round voting October 21 to November 24, Second round voting November 25 to December 8.

AFTER my radio show on Saturday, I had a chat with Nazil from the Pointer Clinic as I had a major problem with Boy Boy (BB). Having spent 10 weeks at Cat and Dog World, requiring an emergency operation for stomach torsion and coming into a new home with boxes everywhere, I can understand any animal, including myself, suffering stress. My daughter Sarah came
over and whilst relaxing in a chair was lightly scratching his hindquarters when BB jumped up at her. I stopped him with my voice and told him he was a good boy. Now, before you think I am out of my mind, it is important to remember that we are dealing with a ‘dog’ and the last instruction was ‘No’ at which he stopped so I told him rightly that he was a good boy. That is how we train dogs and never punish them for any reason whatsoever. Sarah had a small bite but had pain in her wrist for a few days. I was very upset at the thought that he could not be trusted and that Susan was now scared of him. I decided to discuss this with Susan, who confirmed she was afraid of him. We

chatted about moving home, his insecurity and what was to be his future and at this stage we agreed to give him more time. I made it clear I could not and would not give him to another home or have him put down. This was clearly

Help fight the demolitions By Stephen Lear THE demolition of the two houses in Cantoria has stirred up a hornet’s nest in the British community and beyond. Organisation Abusos Urbanisticos Almanzora No (AUAN) has seen a marked increase of interest in its activities and has arranged a recruitment drive for people wanting to join up. On Friday, Mike Challinor, the association secretary and Derek Brown, a committee member, were outside Colin the Card shop on the Longo Industrial Estate just outside Albox to meet people. Mike said: “Recruitment is slow but very promising. People are realising that the only way forward is through AUAN. All the information we give out is true, to the point and ‘kosher’.” Derek added: “The illegal housing
situation not only affects the Almanzora Valley but the whole of Andalucia.” AUAN’S next meeting is on Saturday, November 16, at the Parilla Hotel in Albox at 11am. More recruitment days are planned and it is also possible to sign up online at www.almanzora-au.org. The joining fee is €30 with a €50 annual fee which will cover the whole of 2014 for people who join up between now and the end of the year.

With a dry weight of 1,490 kilograms, the car benefits from a power-to-weight ratio of 1.99kg/hp. 19th Hole Golf Monthly Medal THE 19th Hole Golf Society played a Monthly Medal round at Aguilon. The Men’s Division was won by Mark Danson with a net score of 74 points, followed by Pete Dow (74) in second and Bob Tagg (75) in third place. The Ladies’ Division winner was Christine
Dow (76) followed by second place Zeta Denyer (89). The only two went to Michael Craswell and the nearest the pins went to Mark Danson, Ray Wicking, Dave Denyer. The 19th Hole Golf Society would like to thank all of their members and guests for their support. The society would like to announce it is now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area and that they play their home course Aguilon on a fortnightly basis.

Indalo win Kings Cup INDALO BC took on Quesada as they hosted the finals of the prestigious Kings Cup. Eleven players from each team took part and the format was men’s and ladies’ singles, pairs, triples and rinks. In the men’s singles Derek Webb (Indalo) won 21-14 against Pete Bonsor (Quesada), while Deidre Leeming (Quesada) won 21-17 against Ann Reynolds (Indalo) in the ladies’ singles. Alan DeBoer/ Jan Dando (Indalo) won 23-13 against Veronica and Derek Sale (Quesada) in the pairs, with Debbie Colquhoun/Mo DeBoer/John Colquhoun (Indalo) winning 23-11 against Ruth Birch/Derek Tozer/Nick Birch (Quesada) in the triples. In the rinks, William Holtham/Pearl Houghton/John Muldoon/Bill Pain (Quesada) won

Mick’s team fought back from 8-1 down and scored 10 points in the remaining eight ends to win the final 11-10.
