La Nucia campaign is looking for €1m boost LA NUCIA now has 20,000 registered inhabitants. The ‘padron’ campaign launched by the town hall in May has paid off. At the beginning of 2012, the town’s population had reached 19,135 but now exceeds 20,000, according to the National Statistics

Institute. Thanks to the padron drive, hundreds more have added their names to the municipal roll. This means that the yearly cash transfer from the central government in Madrid will increase by 4.52 per cent. The next objective is to reach

25,000, which is not an unrealistic one as unofficial estimates place La Nucia’s real population at close to 30,000. Once the municipal roll reaches the magic figure of 25,000, La Nucia will be in line for another €1 million a year.

Banks to pay town hall for giving us cash CAMPELLO TOWN HALL has provisionally agreed to charge banks for ATMs accessed directly from the street. Banks will have to pay €1,000

for each cash machine. They have been given a month to appeal against the decision. The proposal, presented by Campello EU political party, was

backed after modifications by the PSOE, and passed at a plenary meeting in July. “The banks make money by using the public right of way,” they

argued. The new charge would affect eight of the town’s cash machines but not consumers, according to EU spokeswoman, Raquel Perez.

SEASCAPE: Capturing the moment…

Sea is the subject as artists gather

THE fourth edition of the Painters’ Gathering took place on Albir Beach. It was organised by the ArtAvant association, in conjunction with Alfaz’s Culture and Tourism departments. Painters met to paint their surroundings between 9.30am and 5.30pm. Rain was forecast but failed to materialise. ArtAvant provided the canvases but the artists provided their own paints, brushes and palettes. Technique and the medium chosen were up to the painter.

There were no prizes at the end of the day, apart from the reward of the satisfaction to be found in painting. The pictures will be put on display by the town hall’s Culture department. The ArtAvant association was founded in 2007 and has 21 members who participate in activities including talks, conferences, workshops and exhibitions. It also holds classes for adults and children from October until June in the Casa de Cultura, every Thursday from 5.30pm until 6.45pm.

The Marqués de Riscal vineyard in La Rioja has been nominated for the prestigious award by the US Wine Enthusiast magazine. Each year, it honours individuals and companies who have had outstanding achievements in the wine world with the Wine Star Awards. The Spanish winery may be mulling over its chance of winning, but it is facing tough competition from Axa Millesimes (France), Joao Portugal Ramos (Portugal), Produttori del Barbaresco (Italy) and Vins de Michel Gassier (France). The winners will no doubt be raising a glass when they are announced in the special Wine Star Award issue of December 3.

Rice days spell out paella festival ‘RICE’ conjures up several images in English, but in Spanish ‘arroz’ is shorthand for paella. Benidorm is now holding the second edition of the resort’s Jornadas del Arroz. In other words, it is a paella

festival, conceived to combine and promote the area’s gastronomy and tourism, with 19 restaurants participating in the event. During the recent Valencia Day celebrations, the public were able to

sample a wide variety of the huge range of dishes that come under the heading of paella. Portions were charged at €1 each and the money raised went towards the town’s November fiestas.

Benidorm’s Mayor Augustin Navarro was on hand to dish out the rice, assisted by Tourism Councillor Gema Amor, Fiestas Councillor Cristina Escoda and members of the fiestas’ committee.

an event to combine the two. The Gourmet Race was organised by Club

Nautico and Teulada Town Hall. As the 26 competing boats sailed the two-hour course, down in each galley the cooks had to prepare a dish based on 300 grammes of monkfish. Once on dry land, the food was tasted and assessed by a jury headed by one of Spain’s most revered and influential chefs, Juan Mari Arzak. The dish produced by the Swiss Hotel Moraira’s boat was declared the winner.

And doctors are diagnosing the syndrome with growing frequency in the Valencian Community, warned Maria Jose Fernandez Carbonell, a psychologist at Manises Hospital (Valencia). More grandparents are increasingly affected as working mothers and single parents affected by the economic crisis turn to their own parents for childcare, said Carbonell. The usual profile of a ‘slave grandparent’ is a woman of more than 50 ‘who asks a lot of herself’ and is ‘excessively concerned with her family’s welfare,’ the psychologist said.

Gender equality comes to Callosa WOMEN were on an equal footing with men for the first time during Callosa’s recent fiestas. The town has been celebrating Moors and Christians fiestas for 153 years, with women playing an increasingly prominent part for the last 30. But although allowed to form their own groups or filaes these have always been part of, and subordinate to, the male companies. The women’s groups are now independent and the final barrier was lifted with the removal of a veto that prevented women from occupying leading roles during the celebrations. In Callosa as elsewhere, Moors and Christians celebrations re-enact a Moorish invasion followed by a mock battle and the Christian band’s

eventual victory. To underline the fiestas’ emancipation, this year’s Christian ambassador was a woman, Ainhoa Lopez Duran.

Coming years could see women as standardbearers or leading the combined troops of either band, Ainhoa said. She had received a

great deal of support, she added, although she was aware that not everyone had supported the decision to have a woman ambassador. “But the fiesta has to

evolve. With as many women as men taking part, it wasn’t logical not to be equal, independent and with the same rights,” she argued.

The season opens with the film El Llanero Solitario (The Lone Ranger), followed by

La Gran Familia Española on October 26 and 27. Tickets cost €4. Police to learn English ALMOST half of Javea’s Local Police have put their names down for an English course. Thirty-five officers will be attending lessons given by a group of volunteers. “Knowledge of English is good, especially in a tourist resort like Javea,” said Public Safety

Councillor Juan Ortola. Javea has a large British community, he said. “Besides,” he added, “the majority of Europeans speak English.” The classes will be held twice a week in the same building as Adult Education (EPA) classes.

Report on crematorium leaked IN exceptional circumstances San Juan’s much-opposed crematorium could pose a health hazard. This was admitted in a report by the regional government’s Health Department leaked to Informacion newspaper. Nevertheless, weather conditions would have to be ‘extremely unfavourable’ and the crematorium furnace would need to be functioning eight hours a day throughout the year, experts said.

In a league all of their own AN internet dating site has published its own football league table. The site, Ashleymadison.com, has 20 million users in 30 countries and specialises in contacts for married people wanting ‘a discreet adventure’. It has 1,000,000 Spanish users. After carrying out a survey amongst Spanish males, the site compiled a list of first division clubs whose supporters are the most unfaithful to their wives, if not their team. Barcelona-based Espanyol FC headed the list, with fans who claimed to be unfaithful 4.1 times a year.

Next came Real Madrid supporters with an annual 3.84 infidelities. Bronze went to Valencia FC, with male supporters alleging 3.77 ‘adventures’ each year. There is no first division Alicante City team but Elche CF, which ascended last year, is near the bottom of the Ashleymadison list. Its supporters ranked 16th with 1.80 affairs a year. Fans of another Valencia City side, Levante, who claimed to be unfaithful 1.57 times a year occupied 18th place. The most faithful of all were Granada supporters with 0.62 infidelities a year.

Calls for Aguamarga footbridge THREE people have died crossing the AlicanteMurcia line at Aguamarga in the past year. Lola Camacho, whose son Victor and his girlfriend Yoselin died after they were hit by a train in October 2012, is calling for a footbridge over this section of track. Warning notices were erected and part of the line fenced off after the deaths but people still cross it to reach Aguamarga Beach, and an angler was killed by a train there in September.

Cucumber-cool couldn’t cut it A COUPLE were arrested as they left a San Vicente property which they had just robbed. A resident in an adjoining building had been woken by a suspicious-sounding noise at around 2.30am.

“I rang the police after I looked outside and saw the front door ajar and part of the lock on the ground,” he said. A man and woman, aged 40 and 39, were leaving as the police arrived.

Instead of fleeing, they sat on a street bench outside in an attempt to allay suspicions. Checking inside the woman’s bag, however, police found jewellery stolen from the property they had just left.

Night service restored ONDARA, Pedreguer, Vergel and Gata health centres will once again open at night. The emergency service between 10pm and 8am was withdrawn 15 months ago. Marina Salud, responsible for the Marina Alta’s privatised health

service, must restore night-time attention at the four health centres, said the regional government’s Health Department. Some 14,000 people have signed a petition organised by the Platform for the Defence of

the Public Health System, calling for the cancellation of Marina Salud’s contract. Fourteen Marina Alta town halls have voted to terminate the agreement, a platform spokesman said, with only three in favour of privatisation.

Ozone therapy for fountain PLAZA DE LOS LUCEROS is the heart of Alicante City. It is also at the heart of the June Hogueras fiestas but the imposing fountain at its centre, created from

cast concrete in the early 20th century, is deteriorating. Vibrations from the daily ‘mascletas’ – fireworks’ displays whose object is

noise not colour – have damaged the structure. Cracks are appearing and fragments are falling from the fountain’s columns and embellishments.

To the disgust of residents as well as fiestas organisers, the city hall decreed that another location would have to found for next June’s displays. Meanwhile, the Luceros fountain will undergo a ‘profound restoration’, announced Culture Councillor Miguel Valor. Emarasa, responsible for the upkeep of the city’s fountains, has decided to substitute the chlorine usually added to the water with ‘less aggressive’ ozone.

NEWS Bypass not bypassed IMPROVEMENTS to Benidorm’s bypass will be completed next year, after all. Allocations for widening the N-322 bypass continued until 2018 in the central government’s budget for 2014. This immediately prompted speculation that the project, which began in 2009, would last another five years. The funds beyond 2014 cover final payments and other incidentals, confirmed senator for Benidorm, Agustin Almodobar. “There have been holdups owing to the economic situation and continual delays in payments arising from two disastrous socialist governments,” Almodobar said. “But we can confirm that the Benidorm bypass will be finished and functioning in 2014.”

Alicante loses out on internal flights ALICANTE-ELCHE AIRPORT has lost another domestic route. The Ryanair link to Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) ceases operating on November 4.

Flights are usually 90 per cent full but Ryanair terminated its agreement with the Galician Regional Government after subsidies were removed. The airport has lost its routes to Zaragoza, Oviedo, Vigo, Menorca, Valladolid and Las Palmas since 2011. Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Palma de Mallorca are now the only domestic destinations available from Alicante-Elche. Air Berlin operates the Palma link for passengers who change planes in Alicante. Aimed at tourist and not domestic flights, the few available seats are expensive. Above all, the AVE highspeed train between Alicante and Madrid is poaching Madrid-bound Iberia Express and Air Nostrum passengers. The first train arrives in Madrid well before the first flight and fares are cheaper.

Corridor on track THE Mediterranean Corridor linking Spain to Central Europe remains a government priority. From being ‘an idea’, the corridor has become reality, said Ana Pastor, the central government’s Minister of Public Works. The project received a budget of €2.4 billion between 2012 and 2013 and another €1 billion will be spent on rail infrastructure in 2014, the minister pledged. Contracts have been awarded for sections in Tarragona and Valencia, and the ministry is putting the finishing touches to conditions for tenders for the La Encina to Alicante section. Requirements for the Alicante to Cartagena line are now being drafted, Pastor confirmed.

One fish was severely wounded by a swimmer who stabbed it with a fishing spear and pulled off its tail. Another beachgoer, Miguel, protected the fish for 20 minutes while waiting for the oceanographic staff to arrive. “People who saw it were crying,” he recalled as he watched the six fish taken out to sea. Although tailless, the injured fish can now feed and swim normally, explained Josep Crespo from the centre.

No hosing-down COMMUNAL rubbish containers are being hosed down in Alicante City streets. This contravenes the contract signed by UTE Alicante, a consortium of four firms headed by developer Enrique Ortiz. Consortium employees have been photographed training high-pressure hoses on the containers.

The practice is a health risk, opposition councillors complained, as dirt and grime are merely transferred from the rubbish containers to the pavements and street. The conditions of the consortium’s 12-year, €435-million contract state that containers must be cleaned and repaired inside its own premises.

JAVEA’S Intersociedad de Vecinos Hispanofilos (ISVH) has received a Villa de Javea award. It was founded in 1973 by Swiss and German residents to present a united front during development and construction conflicts. The association gradually expanded to include new arrivals from all nationalities in the Balcon al Mar area, and eventually a permanent office was set up. The group, which is in constant contact with the town hall and police, has also created the Balcon al Mar volunteer fire

service, which has helped to extinguish more than 300 fires. ISVH currently has more than 825 members who collaborate with the Caritas charity, the Apasa animal protection society, the Red Cross and the town hall’s Social Services Department. ISVH typifies those who come to Javea not only to enjoy the area and its people, but also to work for the good of the community, said Javea Mayor Jose Chulvi. “They are an example of solidarity towards others,” he declared to loud applause.

An autumn clear-up for Benissa stream EIGHT volunteers spent almost five hours clearing part of Benissaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Barranco de la Solana. They belong to the fire-prevention group, Asociacion Benissera Anti Incendis (ABAI), which usually concentrates on Sierra de Bernia zones within the Benissa boundaries. This time their task consisted of clearing the bed of the Solana stream, which can rapidly become a river during the heavy rainfall that can be expected at this time of the year. The ABAI volunteers pruned trees, removed deadfalls and cleared undergrowth to ensure that the channel was entirely free of plants or rubbish that could hinder the streamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flow.

HARD WORK: Clearing the Barranco de la Solana. Most of their work was carried out where the channel narrows under the bridge on the Benissa to Bernia road. In all they removed half-a-tonne of plants, weeds and prunings,

together with a further 150 kilos of rubbish. This was later ferried to the Benissa eco-park by a lorry from Benissa Impuls, which also collaborated with the Solana clean-up.

Fertility rates hit by poor economy THE fertility rate of Spanish women has fallen since the crisis. The highest figure during the last decade was 1.36 children for every Spanish woman of child-bearing age, recorded in 2008 by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The higher rate amongst foreign women in Spain was at its greatest in 2002, with 1.86 children per woman. By 2012 the overall fertility rates for both had fallen to 1.28 and 1.54 respectively. The harder a country’s economy is hit, the greater the decrease in fertility, concluded ‘Focus on Spanish society,’ a report from the Funcas think-tank. In 2011, Spanish women who worked had 1.91 children while unemployed women had 0.80, Funcas found. This was in direct contrast to Germany, Austria and Norway with their generous social benefits for families and children. Germany has a fertility rate of 0.88 for women who work and 2.66 amongst those who do not. Funcas also pointed out that Spain has a high proportion of couples in the 25-49 age group where both work full-time and have children under six. Again, this pattern is not repeated in countries like Gemany or Austria.

AENA spending out of control AENA, Spain’s airport and air navigation operator, spends €863,200 a year on 83 cars for executives. It is one of Spain’s most unprofitable state-owned companies, owing €12.57 billion by the end of 2012. Ten per cent of its staff were made redundant last year. “AENA is outside public control,” said Pere Macias, an MP for CiU in the central

parliament in Madrid. “Its executives act as though they are employed by a private company,” he declared. Last year, prompted by adverse publicity, the company cancelled its Financial Director’s five-year car hire contract. The luxury vehicle with leather upholstery and a silk-lined roof would have cost the company €70,422.

Spanish held back as I in 5 fall below most basic reading level SPAIN is near the bottom of the list in a new survey of literacy and numeracy levels amongst adults in developed countries. That means the country, along with Italy, could be being held back in the fight to emerge from economic hardship. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Survey of Adult Skills measured the skills of 16 to 65-year-olds across 24 countries and looked at how literacy, numeracy and problem-solving is used at work. The results reveal the challenges some major economies face in boosting their skills levels. In reading, more than one in five adults in Italy (27.7 per cent), Spain (27.5 per cent) and France (21.6 per cent) perform at or below the most basic level, compared with one in 20 Japanese (4.9 per cent) and one in 10 Finns (10.6 per cent). Almost one in three adults in Italy (31.7 per cent), Spain (30.6 per cent) and the USA (28.7 per cent) perform at or below the most basic level of numeracy, compared to around one in 10 in Japan (8.2 per cent), Finland (12.8 per cent) and the Czech Republic (12.8 per cent). The Survey also reveals the extent of the ‘digital divide,’ with millions failing to master

even simple computer skills, such as using a computer mouse. This ranges from nearly one in four adults in Italy, Korea, Poland, the Slovak Republic and Spain to one in 14 adults in the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. It provides clear evidence of how developing and using skills improves employment prospects and quality of life as well as boosting economic growth. Investors say yes INVESTORS have given a vote of confidence to Spain by snapping up 31-year government bonds. It was Spain’s first new long term bond since 2009. IT was more than three times oversubscribed, with the Spanish treasury receiving €10 and the Treasury received €10 billion in offers, more than three times what it had planned to sell, half from foreign investors. Spain will pay around 5.2 per cent interest, a huge improvement on the 7 per cent for 10 year bonds it was forced to pay last year. Spain’s financial problems are easing as the European Central Bank has backed the euro and markets are flooded with liquidity by the USA and Japan.

MAY appear to be thick-skinned and emotionally uncaring when accused of ranting and racism, but I can tell you I most certainly am not. Particularly as far as the latter is concerned. Many of my past correspondents have really hit hard with their nasty accusations, including the occasional death threat. The reason I have stuck to my guns over the years, is not only because I believed I was right, but also because I have been strengthened by the amount of positive support I have received. Support which has far outweighed the dissent. Over the years, literally hundreds of readers have expressed their agreement with my views and have congratulated both me and the Euro Weekly News for having the courage to speak out when they themselves, fearing recriminations, have not been able to do so. I am also of the firm belief that the pen is far mightier than the sword. With the refreshing open discussions that have emerged this week, not only have all those dissenters been put firmly in their place, but also any violent alternatives have at least been put on the back burner for a while. The extremely ‘better late than never’ SKY News poll this week came up with the fact that

Far from integrating with their generous hosts, they have gone out of their way to recreate their own societies, even to forming segregated areas where they endeavour to reproduce the culture and customs of the countries they have actually run away from! Many companies, particularly cab firms, are manned and run exclusively by immigrants. This can only have been achieved by practising racism, something which they are very quick to whine about when they consider it is being instigated by locals, but in fact, they themselves can often be the worst offenders of all. The burka is a racist insult to the British people. It is a completely alien outfit, specifically designed to segregate and separate these people from the culture of Britain. Always in black (not pink or blue or some less intimidating colour, you notice!) it is nothing to do with religion and should be banned completely, except perhaps for specific occasional festivals. The list goes on. The British people have adapted to foreigners long enough. It’s high time they were shown respect, gratitude and reciprocated adaptation from those who wish to live among them.

More Families Pay More UK M Inheritance Tax any British expatriates remain liable to UK inheritance tax, where the tax take has been rising over recent years. If you are a British national it is important to understand how this tax, and any changes, will affect your heirs. If you live or own assets in Spain you also need to keep up to date with Spanish succession tax. It applies if the assets are located in Spain (regardless of residence of beneficiary), or if the beneficiary is resident in Spain (worldwide assets). UK inheritance tax is charged on your worldwide estate if you are UK domiciled (UK assets only, if not). The tax rate is 40%, above a tax free threshold. Your spouse is generally exempt (though not always). Crucially, it is based on domicile rather than residence, a much more permanent concept which does not change simply because you left the UK. The basic rule is that you are domiciled in the country you regard as your homeland. Many British expatriates therefore remain liable for

The tax rate is 40% and has remained unchanged since the late 1980s. A lower 36% rate applies if you leave at least 10% of your estate to charity. The tax free threshold, or ‘nil rate band,’ does change, and affects how many families are caught in the inheritance tax net and how much tax is paid. It used to rise each year with inflation, but has

been frozen at £325,000 since 2009 as part of austerity measures. The March Budget confirmed it would remain frozen until at least 2018. We have warned that freezing the threshold is effectively a tax rise. Now, analysis released by Saffery Champness reveals that HM Revenue & Customs’ tax take increased by 9% in just two years since 2009. (Data is not yet available for the 2011-12 tax year.) The number of estates paying this tax increased by almost 6%. With the freeze scheduled to continue until 2018, more families will be pulled into the inheritance tax net, and tax bills will rise. Rising property prices and asset values rise will also impact on inheritance tax bills. The £325,000 threshold is per individual. Any used portion can

be carried forward and used by the second spouse/civil partner. It is not all bad news. It is often possible to mitigate or avoid this tax with careful planning and professional advice. As an expatriate you may be able to change your domicile. This is hard, but not impossible if you intend to live in Spain permanently and cut ties with the UK. It is complex and professional guidance is essential. HMRC can deem you to be domiciled in the UK even if you consider that you are not - this would have unexpected tax consequences for your heirs. Even if you do change your domicile, you will still be deemed to be UK domiciled for the next three years. Also if you or your spouse return to the UK in future, you are likely

to immediately regain your UK domicile status, plunging you right back into the inheritance tax net. Changing your domicile is not the only way to escape UK inheritance tax. You should seek expert advice from a specialist who is au fait with domicile issues, and how UK inheritance tax and Spanish succession tax interact, so they can recommend the best solutions for your situation. Duran Lleida: ‘Brussels will not bend the rules for Cataluña’ Cassandra Nash

URAN LLEIDA shot down in flames the separatists’ belief that Brussels would bend the rules to keep Cataluña within the fold. “It’s impossible to say that Europe will save us a place. Europe left us with bare backsides after the War of Succession in 1714,” he warned. Old rancour lasts for centuries, especially when it’s the result of an unwise choice.

Voices of reason IS the PP milking the Cataluña question for all it’s worth?

Better a sovereignty issue that unites most nonCatalans regardless of ideology, than the corruption issue that temporarily united the entire nation. Meanwhile, voices of reason are becoming more audible and one of them belongs to Josep Duran Lleida. His party Unio Democratica de Catalunya is one half of Convergencia i Unio (CiU), a centre-right nationalist party that is actually an electoral alliance. The other half, Convergencia Democratica de Catalunya is headed by Artur Mas, the regional president. Duran Lleida would settle for leaving conflict to one side, he said recently, and happily accept wider self-government powers. Would Artur Mas settle for this? Possibly, but he has schlepped so far along the

Old loyalties SOMEBODY tried to blow up Senen Pousa who is a Franco-

supporter and proud of it. More accurately somebody tried to blow up the town hall in Beade (Orense). The council is controlled by the PP and Pousa has been mayor for more than 40 years. No-one was hurt and the building remained intact although badly damaged. “They’re not going to change the way I think with bombs,” he said afterwards. Pousa, a Galician who has never hidden his respect and admiration for the dead dictator, another Galician, claims that noone in the party has ever tried to bring him into line. Pousa went even further by claiming “there are many people in the PP who breathe the same air, but say nothing.” It is not an old man like Pousa who endangers democracy. On the contrary, he demonstrates that democracy can absorb and digest eccentrics. The real danger comes from the people who use bombs to make a political point.

Earlier this year, I compiled the book Your personal guide to making Authentic Valencian Paellas, which is now being translated into Spanish at the request of locals. As the weather was warm and dry and many vegetables were readily available on Valencia Day - October 9 - I cooked a paella for an international group of friends using as many ingredients as possible from the garden and following the ingredient preparation guidelines and recipe to the letter. The ingredients available were the last of the tomatoes, butter beans, haricot beans, Perona runner beans, globe artichokes, rabbit and chicken meat, a little from our autumn crocuses, home-

produced olive oil, garlic, thyme, parsley and the red peppers and rosemary branches to rest on the top while the rice was cooking. The end result was much appreciated and photographed by my good friend, Jurgen Schadeberg, the famous photographer, who took the famous prison cell return shots of Nelson Mandela. Incidentally if you live on the Costa Blanca, Jurgen has an exhibition of some of his photographs on at the Gandia Grau campus at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, until October 31. On this last day one of his films will be shown focusing on African music. Desserts included a deliciously ripe final melon harvested at the beginning of September and the last of the figs

cooked in sweet wine and anis liqueur. Planting vegetables During the next few weeks a variety of vegetable plantlets can be planted up in a veggie plot, raised beds, growing tables or builders’ buckets. Incidentally, an inexpensive range of coloured builders’/ gardeners’ buckets including attractive green ones is now available in some stores. After useful autumn rains we are planting/sowing beetroots, broad beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, dandelions, parsnips, peas, red cabbages, celery, garlic, leeks, lettuces, onions, spinach, radishes and rocket.

Foreign buying power stronger MORE foreigners are purchasing property in Spain. According to the latest figures published by the official college of notaries in Spain, the CGN, sales to nonSpaniards in the second quarter of this year had risen 22.6 per cent compared to the same period in 2012. CGN say that the increase in sales is due to non-resident buyers, with the number of Belgians buying in Spain rising by 78 per cent. There were also 70 per cent more non-resident French buyers than in 2012. More Russians and Moroccans also bought in the second quarter of this year, whilst UK buyers accounted for 15.5 per cent of the purchases made by non-residents, compared to 49 per cent in 2007. The Murcia Region led the way in terms of the number of foreign buys, with 42.9 per cent more sales compared to the same period last year, followed by Andalucia, Valencia and CataluĂąa.

Balearic property prices edge closer to those in London THE average price per square metre of property sold by Mallorca and Ibiza Sotheby’s International Realty this year is €9,000. This puts the Spanish islands into the same price bracket as certain parts of England’s capital. According to September research from Savills, prime ‘second-hand’ property in South West London is valued between £5,490 and £10,656 per square metre and for the East of the City between £5,382 and £8,503 per square metre. High prices in London are being blamed on strong overseas demand. Daniel Chavarria Waschke, Managing Director of Balearics Sotheby’s International Realty,

Port Andratx said: “Due to ease of access from most Northern European cities, more than 80 per cent of our buyers are not Spanish. Looking at the year to date, half of all our

enquiries are from Britons and Germans, 34 per cent and 21 per

cent respectively for Mallorca and 40 per cent and 10 per cent for Ibiza, and they are placing high value on location alongside quality of construction, a considered layout and a superior level of decor. Tastes are more refined and budgets seemingly limitless, but supply is relatively low, hence the

surprisingly high property values we’re now experiencing on the islands. “Whilst the assumption may be that it’s Russian or Middle Eastern buyers who have been spending an average of €9,000 a square metre on property with us this year, that’s not the case,” continued Daniel: “In fact, two thirds of our purchasers have been British, with German, Swedish and the occasional Far Eastern buyer making up the minority third. Brits certainly feature very strongly in 2013. “Whether the balance will switch further afield to China, Hong Kong and Russia when Spain’s new Golden Visa legislation takes effect remains to be seen.” Balearics Sotheby’s International Realty has also observed the effects of the ‘crisis’ are no longer being felt in the Balearic property market, and the trend is for bigger, more expensive villas.

ICHAEL WINNER was a friend of mine so I am certain he will not mind me stealing his wonderful catch phrase ‘Calm down dear boy.. calm down’ when dealing with a greedy eater. I am now writing about my Boy Boy (BB). For those that do not know, he is a Rottweiler who weighs in at 75 kilos, well trained and has never left my side since he was eight weeks old. Readers may remember how Boy Boy was rapidly diagnosed with bloat whilst staying at a kennels, and only the speed of

response from the staff to get him to a vet saved his life. I now confess that BB has always been a pain in the neck eater, I bet a lot of you know what I mean! BB always eats slowly and SCOFFING FOOD: A dislikes dried food. I am compelled to add a little tuna or sardine and then I have to talk to him like a baby to eat. Now back home after his ordeal he scoffs his food so quickly without any sardine or tuna and rather than be delighted I am very concerned, knowing that when a dog eats too fast he swallows too much air during a meal which can cause distension of the stomach and predisposing it to twist over on itself. Stomach torsion (bloat) which

dog can swallow too much air. is not uncommon, can occur a second time if the stomach has not been sewn to the side so that it cannot turn over. Fortunately BB’s stomach is now sewn to the side, but there are other problems associated with fast eating. Next week I will take another look at the consequences of, and tips to prevent, dogs bolting their food.

Porsche celebrates 40 years of 911 Turbo TO coincide with the 40th anniversary of the 911 Turbo, Porsche has presented the open-top versions of the new generation 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S. Making their worldwide debut at the Auto Show in Los Angeles in November, the two new models will double Porsche’s 911 series to four versions. The 911 Turbo Cabriolet and 911 Turbo S Cabriolet deliver the same performance and efficiency offered by the 911 Coupe model unveiled a few months ago. The turbocharged 3.8litre six-cylinder engine delivers 520 bhp (383 kW) in the open-top 911 Turbo and 560 bhp (412 kW) in the S model. The cars accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.5 and 3.2 seconds respectively, reaching a top speed of up to 318 km/h. Both of the new models comply with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), offering figures of 9.9 l/100 km (equivalent to 231 g/km CO2). The open-top 911 Turbo models come with PDK dual-clutch

transmission as standard, as well as the new PTM all-wheel drive and rearaxle steering. Opel updates its benchmark monocab GERMAN manufacturer Opel has presented the new Meriva, an update to the series that will premier worldwide at the Brussels’ motor show in January. The new Meriva benefits from many improvements that give it a more refined appearance. The front fascia features a new grille framed by front headlights that, for the first time, include LED daytime running lights. The car also features 17 and 18 inch wheels, becoming the only small monocab offering this option according to the German manufacturer. The new Meriva comes with Opel’s new generation diesel engine the 1.6 CDTI that had its debut in the Zafira Tourer. This diesel is initially available in the power variant 100 kW/136 hp and delivers 320 Newtons of maximum torque. It consumes just 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres and emits 116 grams of CO2 per kilometre, 10 per cent less than its 96 kW/130 hp, 1.7 predecessor. In addition to the 1.6 diesel, all petrol engines and the LPG variant in the new Meriva already comply with the Euro 6 emissions limits. The 1.4 litre petrol engines (88 kW/120 hp and 103 kW/140 hp) are now also offered in combination with a reworked low-friction six-speed automatic transmission.

As for the five and six-speed manual gearboxes, these have been upgraded to offer more precise gear changes. The Meriva also receives a new IntelliLink infotainment system enabling seamless smartphone integration into the vehicle. The system features Bluetooth hand-free phone connectivity and audio streaming, and additional connectivity via USB. Navigation is embedded into the system, and destinations can be entered via voice recognition. Map updates can be downloaded via USB. The car’s interior benefits from a redesigned central console and increased rear passenger legroom in the central seat. The patented FlexDoors system is less intrusive on rear passenger space than sliding doors. Doors open out at an 84 degree angle and facilitate, for example, the easy installation of child safety seats on both sides of the rear seat. In addition, the interior cabin can turn into a five, four, three and two seater thanks to the FlexSpace-Rear-Seating system by Opel. Prices of the Meriva will be announced in November when its order books are opened, and the first cars will be delivered to customers as of the third week of January.

The 66 club members and invited guests enjoyed two full days of competitive mixed triples, won by Malcolm Sprawson, Heike Ives and Velia Wood. The BBC Winter League team was on top form winning on all six rinks to take 12 points against Javea Green, putting them in pole position. The Berleen team also claimed maximum points with an impressive 19-12 victory. The Lions second fixture of the season in the Northern League was at home to Calpe where they had to settle for a draw at 5 points each.
