We won’t forget Tribute paid to expat killed in devastating floods By Stephen Lear VERA residents joined together to pay their respects to those who died in last year’s devastating floods One year on from the ‘gota fria’ that caused such devastation in the province of Almeria on September 28, 2012, a small group of citizens from Vera gathered at the bridge that joins Puerto Rey and Pueblo Laguna to lay floral tributes to the people who lost their lives in the floods. Veraplayazul President Miguel Jurado Hurtado presided over a simple ceremony in one of the worst affected areas and paid tribute to resident Diana Dudas, 52, who lost

her life on that tragic day. The neighbourhood association Veraplayazul has sent a registered letter to Queen Sofia of Spain with a request for help, asking for protection and mediation in order to get the government to sit down and address the problem of the floods. There are still hundreds of unresolved petitions asking for aid. Queen Sofia visited the area last year a few days after the storm and witnessed the devastation for herself. Ten people were killed in the floods across Almeria and into Murcia. Veraplayazul laments the fact that on the first anniversary of the disaster, there still continues to be a

threat from the rain with the lack of cleaning, dredging and channelling of the River Antas. One woman present at the ceremony was Mary McMurray who has had a property in Las Buganvillas since 2001. Mary had come along to pay respects to her friend Diana. Fighting back the tears, Mary recalled: “A lovely lady who is sadly missed by the community, a very gentle person who went far too young.” In a poignant moment, like teardrops from heaven, a few drops of rain fell from the sky just at the point when the small crowd threw flowers from the bridge.

18-tonne hashish haul

CUSTOMS officers have uncovered 18 tonnes of hashish in the largest drugs haul in the history of Almeria. Customs enforcement agents who searched the interior of the merchant ship Moon Light found the drugs on Saturday. The seven members of the crew are of Syrian origin and have all been arrested. The bales of hashish were

loaded on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, although the final destination is unknown. Custom officers followed the merchant ship by air after it crossed the Gibraltar Strait. The drugs were on the main deck covered by a dark plastic tarpaulin. The ship was sailing about 25 miles off the coast when it was approached by Customs Surveillance in a spectacular operation.

The investigation remains open and is focusing on two lines of enquiry, namely, the identification of the owner and the final destination of the drugs, and the theory that the ship was probably acting as a mothership to offload to smaller craft and fishing boats. The bales were unloaded by crane from the deck onto two trucks in the Port of Almeria.

Protecting Spanish borders ALMERIA AIRPORT was the scene last week of the first flight of a ‘drone’ within a project named ‘Perseus.’ The system is aimed at controlling the external borders of the European Union incorporating the latest technological advances to interact and receive on a single screen the data provided by different monitoring systems. This was the first flight of an unmanned airplane from a European civil airport. The test flight took off at 8am with airspace in the area closed down for two hours. The aim was to simulate the interception in the Alboran Sea of a boat transporting immigrants from the African coast attempting to enter the European Union illegally. The operation was directed from the centre of Maritime Surveillance Coordination and Border Coastal Civil Guard, located in Madrid. From there they instructed one CN-235 Guardia Civil aircraft to monitor the waters and provide real time information to the coordination centre, while another aircraft developed by Indra and equipped with radar and optoelectronic day/night

to develop and test the new system that aims to improve the capabilities and more efficiently organise human resources and technological advances.

Added to that figure are 9,920 emails and 1,184 telephone calls with tourists looking for information on special hotel deals, transport, activities and events. Mojacar has two Tourist Offices with one located in Mojacar Fronton Square, in the heart of the Old Town, and the second strategically placed on the coast. Among the queries raised in the offices were the attractions of the old town, the beaches of Mojacar and the many activities to do in the area and the province. Eurozone September report points to growth CORE flat CPI data coming in at the end of August, alongside poor German retail sales figures, led to the Euro weakening at the start of September. The currency dipped to 1.3220 against the greenback, leading to the start of the decline in the Euro. On the other hand, we have seen Eurozone firms point to growth in September. Purchasing managers in the Eurozone have indicated the strongest business surroundings for two years. Purchasing Manager’s Index (PMI) figures now sit at 52.1. Any value above 50 is always positive as it reflects growth. This was further backed up by the fact that business activity also grew in July and August. This is a good indicator for economic growth in the third quarter. France was also seen with a PMI score of 50, which was positive considering it

had not seen a positive number in the last 19 months! In addition, both services and manufacturing sectors have led to positive data indicating that the Eurozone will not dip back into recession, after small growth was recorded between April and June. Looking at the currency itself, the end of August and start of September saw the interbank rates for EUR-GBP fall to the 0.84 mark at interbank level. This further dropped to the 0.83 mark, having not witnessed these lows for at least eight months. Despite the fact that it has weakened against the Sterling Pound, it has strengthened against other major

Having seen the Eurozone emerge from its longest recession in at least three decades, recovery will continue to be slow, with access to finance still a major problem. Policy-makers will still have plenty to do to prevent the Euro weakening further. They will need

to take advantage of the relative financial and economic calm to fast-track restricting, particularly in the banking sector. The European Central Bank (ECB) will also need to be ready to counter any tightening in market interest rates emanating from the US. All eyes were focused on the build-up to the German election

to see if this would affect the currency for the majority of the month. The week before the election, the Euro enjoyed a steady run up to the German elections, given the weakness in the US Dollar. However, the currency upheld its strength as Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Party swept most of the votes. This was the biggest win in the last 20 years, which calmed markets greatly, indicating that appropriate steps will continue to be taken towards the survival of the currency. Finally, The Federal Reserve deciding not to taper stimulus and the release of fairly decent economic data has helped the Euro. Overall, a steady end to the month for the Euro but all focus will be on the ECB decision in October to determine whether the Euro will strengthen or decline.

OPINION & COMMENT

Always read the small print before paying IF you are thinking of taking out pet insurance, read ‘Is your pet really insured?’ by David the Dogman, ( Issue 1472). He illustrates that the cover provided by some companies is quite shockingly inadequate, and stresses the importance of reading the small print BEFORE paying for the policy. I can add to the list. I took out an insurance policy for my two dogs but when I read the small print, they were not covered for anything if they were not on a lead. Every day my dogs are taken to a remote part of the campo, where there is no traffic and where they can run free. Just like us, dogs need aerobic exercise which helps to keep them slim and fit, reducing the chances of diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and other medical conditions, many of which need expensive veterinary attention. My dogs are always slim, fit and happy and they have long lives. This policy was clearly useless for my dogs and I did not renew it, because it would not have covered trauma whilst exercising off the lead. I am not against pet insurance, but often the most expensive treatments are not covered, so read the small print and think carefully. Telefonica is an old monopoly company. In 2013, companies that want to expand have to listen to their customers. If they do not meet customers’ demands they will not survive. It is strange that leaders in such a big company do not understand that. Leif J Haarde, Marbella (Malaga)

So on September 23, I went down to enrol thinking I was in plenty of time, only to be told that the classes had already started and I had missed four of them. The office girl was kind enough to tell me that it was because we had been given extra weeks of lessons, but if you don’t know when the course starts it is rather stupid. Would it not be a good idea to put it in the paper so the public has some idea of the changes? I rushed to the one and only book shop in La Cala that sells the course books, Eco, only to find they had run out and the next delivery could be four weeks away. So for all those that have the same problem, the book shop in Fuengirola opposite the Casa de Cultura has them. It seems a shame that things aren’t organised a little better. Trilby (By email)

TELEFONICA is a big, multinational company concentrating on Spanishspeaking markets. It is almost impossible to find any person in their customer service department that speaks English. I live in Marbella and have landline and ADSL internet from Telefonica. The capacity on ADSL is 1 Mbit. That means the internet is very slow and not sufficient to install a BoxTV. I do however pay full price for a service, which according to Telefonica, can be up to 10 Mbit, but that is in other places. When I ask when capacity will be increased in my home it is impossible to get any answer.

I SEE global warming has reared its ugly head again. Does anybody look at the obvious? Population increase has been staggering for many years. It may come as a shock to these scientists that this increase of population creates harmful gases and who are the most prolific producers? It is not us, but we seem to have the finger pointed at us all the time. What do they do? Build a load of ugly, useless windmills. The answer to the problem (this will upset the Catholics) is contraception Clive Graham (By email)

Pay up! IT is an absolute disgrace that suppliers are owed €283 million by town halls and the regional government in Murcia ( Costa Blanca South Issue 1473). Many of these companies will be small and struggling. Being made to wait for their money could push them into bankruptcy. The councils should pull their fingers out, pay up on time, then people might start to view them with a little less cynicism. J G, Los Alcazares (Murcia)

NOTHER 70 or more men, women and children dead in the name of Islam. Not a peep (that I’ve heard) out of the imams and Muslim leaders condemning this latest atrocity. Children with eyes gouged out, castrated men hung up to die on hooks, dismembered body parts used on police as weapons, no doubt to the accompanying chants of Allahu Akbar, and still more victims buried in the rubble of this sickening attack in Nairobi. How much more will it take to convince the pussyfooting PC and ostrich imitators to finally admit that radical elements of Islam mean it is no longer a case of ‘it could happen’ in the UK, but a clear-cut case of ‘when’. I wonder which side the so-called moderates will take then? I guarantee that the most any of them will do is lock themselves away until it’s all over. Don’t expect to see any of them standing up and taking the side of the infidels. When are the authorities going to get a grip? What they should now be doing is using all their high-tech knowledge and information

sources to dig out all the caches of illegal weapons which are no doubt tucked away in their totally unacceptable ‘no go’

areas until the order to eliminate the infidels is heard throughout the land. They must act before it’s too late and our own citizens and dismembered bodies are taking up the front pages of the world’s media. Another thing I truly fail to understand is how the two lowlifes who hacked young soldier Lee Rigby to death on the streets of London live on video and then appeared with his blood dripping from their hands to inform the world they had done this foul deed in the name of Islam, have been allowed to plead not guilty? The mind boggles. This is where we should truly take a leaf out of a Muslim country’s book. In Saudi Arabia a confession of a crime as blatant as this would have been aired

for all to see, and the following Friday, after prayers, they would have been minus their heads on chop square. Job done. Instead of that these two will now appear in a trial that, with appeals, etc, could last for months, get an enormous amount of free publicity for their ‘cause’ and cost the British taxpayer millions. Give us all a break! I’m interested to see what their no doubt ethnic minority lawyers put forward as their defence. As a final note, thanks to all those who extended such a great welcome to the old boy on his recent British mini tour and tele appearance. And thanks to my Mallorca venues for giving me time off. It was a blast. See y’all soon.

East of Eden Set in California's Salinas Valley, this powerful, and often brutal, epic tells the story of the rivalry between two brothers challenging for the affections of their farmer father. The story follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Spain And Offshore Assets As the Spanish government seeks to increase tax revenue, it has set its sights firmly on offshore assets. The international move towards automatic exchange of information will now provide much more data on undeclared or misrepresented foreign assets and income. There is nothing wrong with owning assets outside Spain, but you need to ensure you fully declare them according to Spanish legislation. It is worth reviewing your assets, with the help of a tax specialist, to ensure they are in the most tax efficient vehicles for Spain. In spite of all the measures to increase tax revenue, Spain can still provide tax advantages for UK nationals if you have the right advice. Some people who meet the Spanish residency criteria do not declare themselves for tax. The tax agency, the Agencia Tributaria, has been cracking down on this, for example by looking through utility bills and lists of foreign children registered in local schools.

By Neil Jenkins, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks We are hearing more evidence that the tax authority is using information from abroad and writing to residents suspected of having undeclared funds abroad. A tax amnesty, the Voluntary Disclosure Procedure, was available last year to encourage taxpayers to regularise undeclared assets. As reported by Expansion this July, the Agencia Tributaria is following this up by sending requests to participants, asking for proof of the source of the funds or

clarification on discrepancies with data already on file. The requests are more numerous and detailed than before. Regular taxpayers are also being targeted. The article concluded: “It is clear that offshore assets are being targeted for full investigation.” The government then unveiled its new anti-tax fraud law at the end of October 2012, including the obligation to report assets and rights held outside Spain on Form 720. According to the guidelines of the 2013 Tax Control Plan, the tax office will look at taxpayers who did not submit forms, but who appear to conduct transactions abroad that imply that they do have assets outside Spain’s borders. Speaking in May, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said that 131,411 taxpayers had submitted Form 720, declaring assets worth €87 billion. According to GESTHA, the union of tax inspectors, this is a

very low number since there are around 2.6 million foreign residents alone, the group most likely to have overseas assets. This was reported in an article on the Sur in English website on 12th June 2013, where the Secretary General of GESTHA also told the newspaper that the government will now “seek to focus more on foreign residents in Spain, especially those from the US and those from EU member states.” Spain has signed an intergovernmental agreement for automatic exchange of information with the US. EU Directives, soon to be widened, also provide for automatic sharing of information. The G5 (Spain, UK, France, Germany and Italy) announced a pilot scheme for the multilateral, automatic and standardised exchange of tax information in April. The Treasury Ministry said this would also enable checks on information related to overseas assets.

In September the G20 pledged to introduce automatic exchange of information as a global standard. It is really only a matter of time before the authorities discover undeclared foreign assets. With the new asset reporting rules, the penalties for nondisclosure can be devastating. The tax authorities effectively have no limit as to how far they can go back to assess tax. When you add the various tax rates, penalties, interest and fines, it could add up to more than the value of the asset. While this all sounds very worrying, it need not be. With expert professional advice you can structure your assets to be both tax efficient and fully compliant in Spain, and so that Form 720 need not be such a concern in future. ILD spin, always detectable from the Zarzuela Palace, went into overdrive in April last year. This followed the King of Spain’s disastrous elephantshooting trip. Juan Carlos, now 75, has always had a roving eye but discretion ruled until he broke his hip in Botswana. That was when the press broke its silence regarding his elephant-shooting companion, Princess Corinna zu SaynWittgenstein. A nation that kills bulls for sport cannot criticise a monarch who shoots elephants, but the lavish trip and the fair Corinna were redolent of other unloved Borbons. Juan Carlos is not responsible for his son-in-law’s involvement in alleged misuse of public funds, but Iñaki Urdangarin casts a long shadow and the king’s popularity ratings have slipped inexorably. Coinciding with the king’s recovery from spinal surgery, the Zarzuela wanted to show him back on form and raring to go. The strategy faltered early on when, following his mediation

A different tack THE central government in Madrid is soft-pedalling, not backpedalling, over Cataluña. Mariano Rajoy and his team are reviewing a new financial model for the region. It’s not an independence referendum and it’s not constitutional change, but the way to an autonomy’s heart is always through its pocket.

And in Juan Carlos’s situation no amount of spin can deflect the stab-wound inflict that now-mentioned word, abdication.

WHEN the Costa Concordia cruise ship ran aground, its captain Francesco Schettino left before most of the passengers. He now blames the helmsman although whatever happens to a ship is ultimately the captain’s fault. No-one knows this better than 78-year-old Apostolos Mangouras, captain of the Prestige. He remained aboard until the last possible moment after the stormstricken tanker began to break up in November 2002. He wanted to take the ship to port to contain the inevitable oil

spill but was told to put out to sea. The order came from the Interior Minister of the day, one Mariano Rajoy, a decision that precipitated Spain’s worst-ever environmental catastrophe. Eleven years later, Mangouras now awaits sentencing for the disaster. The buck stops with the captain as Apostolos Mangouras knows. Although he has also learnt that politics will sink any ship.

Diversion backfires THE Noos corruption case centring on Iñaki Urdangarin could have gone to Valencia’s Upper Court of Justice (TSJV), owing to the involvement of Valencian politicians Francisco Camps and Rita Barbera. The TSJV rejected the Prosecution Office’s attempts to offload the case on them. It sees no evidence of wrongdoing, it said, bouncing the case back to Mallorca’s implacable judge, Jose Castro. Someone, somewhere could be disappointed.

too fast or learning too little?

T

HERE has been much press coverage lately about child beauty pageants. First, France announced plans to ban them for promoting ‘hyper-sexualisation’ of minors. Next, child abuse charity Kidscape condemned them while mother-of-six Natalia Adlington, from Liverpool claimed that, far from forcing her children to grow up too fast, they prepared them for adult life. Whilst I agree child beauty pageants come over as creepy - tots teetering down the catwalk in full make-up and bikini or BAN: France opposes child beauty pageants.

ball gown - is the other end of the spectrum any better? By this, I mean the findings a few months back of the parenting website,

Netmums - that childhood is over for many by the age of 12. More than two-thirds of its users complained kids are under pressure to grow up too fast - girls made to worry about their appearance and boys pushed into ‘macho’ behaviour too early. Doesn’t this speak more about Netmums users’ desire to keep their children ‘children’ long after their natural progression into adolescence? We tend to forget that the concept of ‘childhood’ is a relatively modern one. In agricultural and industrial society,

children were down mines, up chimneys or digging up potatoes well before age 12. So, Netmums, less whinging about lost childhoods and more waking up to the reality that kids are just small adults! Too many are cocooned in cotton wool these days - maybe that’s why so many think the world owes them a favour. Not just parents, but the UK education system, too, needs to play its part in teaching kids how to develop mental toughness. Far too many schools are failing to prepare children for adult life. To be successful, you need to learn to cope with failure, stress and hard work. Once this is removed from state schools, when children grow up they’re simply unable to cope except with drink and drugs. Finally, on a completely different note, many thanks to all of you who’ve helped my latest thriller, Retribution, sell so well, and left great comments on my website. In fact, there have been so many hits recently, I was starting to think the blurb on the back of Retribution had maybe gone viral! PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Pat yourself on the back for all of your efforts of recent weeks. Looking back just a few months, would you have thought so much progress could be made? Because of your efforts, home life is enhanced and you are more appreciated.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) When you are at home this week I would like you to consider how you view your surroundings. This is a good week to make changes and have discussions about future directions.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Rarely has your mind been as sharp as it is at the moment. There have been some awkward and downright bad periods in the recent past, but this week everything falls into place.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) For all of the things that you want to do, there are three others that you wish to do. Maybe they are waiting for their own time to come. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) When it isnʼt possible to change something, often it is just as effective to rearrange it. That is the solution which comes to you this week. Instead of being frustrated at a delay, try changing the conditions or times. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) When we have longstanding friendships, these are often taken for granted and yet often we could make so much more of them.

Sudoku Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3X3 box contains the digits 1-9. There’s no maths involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

VIRGO (August 24 September 23) As the saying goes, ʻno one ever said it would be easyʼ. In the past few months you have found this to be true. Hard work is not alien to you, but there is a point where you want to shout ʻenoughʼ.

OPINION & COMMENT

Is it time to let a woman take the reins of power in Spain? H

AVING a woman Prime Minister in Spain would be a good idea, according to David Collman, retired, who lives in Partaloa (Almeria). “It wouldn’t hurt. It would be good to have a change. Maggie Thatcher was a strong leader,” he said. Doreen Walsh and Carol Clark from Alfoquia (Almeria), both retired, agreed. “Yes, women should have the opportunity to be Prime Minister and to prove themselves. They can’t do any worse than the people running the UK government, for example.” Wendy White, retired, from San Luis, (Alicante) believes there are already a lot of women in government which can be a good thing: “Men can be so chauvinistic and Angela

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is on course to overtake Baroness Thatcher as the longest-serving female leader after her historic victory in the German General Elections. Following the re-election of Angela Merkel, do you think Spain should have a female Prime Minister?

Spain would do well with a female leader, but ultimately sex is irrelevant as long as you have

a strong personality, are well educated and have enough life experience to run a country.”

Her husband Gordon agrees: “Your ability will determine what you can achieve but your attitude will determine what you will achieve.” Nineteen-year-old student from Wales, Cary Williamson, on holiday in Alicante, said: “I think females make good leaders as I think they have to work so much harder to prove themselves than their male counterparts.” But Chris Adamson, a retired coalminer who lives in Estepona (Malaga), thought it is all irrelevant. “Whoever is in charge seems to be in thrall to big business and the rich. Look at Maggie, she was pro the rich and against the poor. Even Tony Blair was. He betrayed the working classes. Until there is a sea change in attitudes amongst the ruling classes you could have Minnie Mouse in charge and there would be no difference.”

forecast for autumn at London Fashion Week is clear, flawless skin, very little eye make-up and stand-out lips. So what’s the best way to get rid of spots and get skin looking clear and at its best for the cooler months? Dermatologists stick to a few simple rules for clear spot-free skin:

• Keep skin clean – exercising a daily routine will ensure oils that build up on the surface of the skin allowing pores to clog and spots to form are removed. Try washing the face with soap after removing any make-up, then steaming over a bowl of hot water or with a hot towel, this will allow pores to open. Exfoliate, using only creams specific for the face, to then clean the pores, rinse with warm water to remove and then with cold water to close pores. • Eat healthily – Stay away from too many foods that may increase sebum production like milk, chocolate and sweets, and stick to green vegetables, which include inflammationfighting nutrients, wholegrain items like quinoa for their antioxidant qualities and fish for their omega 3 qualities. • Don’t pick – When we touch the face we transfer dirt and bacteria directly on to the surface and when we pick directly into the pores only making this worse. Dermatologists suggest resisting the urge as best you can.

Social life in a capital town! T

HE many frequent trips I made to Almeria brought me in to contact with a varied assortment of characters composing the entire gamut of the social strata. The suits and ties were too self important and to busy fawning over each other to bother to get to know me. The guys with the jackets but no ties and exceptionally shined shoes did all the work. Then, on down the various levels to the solid clud of rock bottom. Lower than whale excrement on the bottom of the ocean were the two billion shoe shine guys that roamed Almeria’s streets day or night hawking their trade and seeking the smallest remittance in order to survive. And for me there was no better

way of learning the language and culture than from the bottom on up. I made it a point of buying them a beer and asking questions. It was good for my Spanish and knowledge of how this new world span. I too was pretty much a novelty to them, an obvious foreigner that tried to communicate with them and at worse - would listen.

Life was played out in the streets. They quickly LOOKING passed the ‘word’ amongst their peers BACK IN and it wasn’t too MOJACAR long before I graduated to maintaining a parade of followers guys I got to know when I came to town. All of my well enough they would drag me disciples were looking for free to their (barrios) neighbourhood beer and tapas. Some of these which inevitably was in the oldest

section of town, what is still called the Plaza Vieja. Above it was Almeria’s grand castle the Alcazaba, and all around it were caves of glorious and blatant colours which even in their attractiveness from afar appeared foreboding and dangerous up close. It wasn’t long before this area became my favourite to visit. The bars were raucous, noisy, belligerent and fun. I purported myself as a somewhat large fly in the corner so I could observe their daily life. It gave me a front row seat for thought and study. I never entered into the battles. Such esoteric communities leave no secrets behind domestic doors. Life was played out in the streets or it wasn’t LIFE. I had been warned that ‘those people aren’t Spanish but gypsies that follow their own laws.’ The admonition sounded too good to me. Yet, you couldn’t let them become too happy or they’d start singing. The down side was their cacophonous music that sounded as if someone was being strangled and in great pain. I later learned it was so; even if contrived and part of the intended emotion of conveyance.

CHRISTMAS GOODS: Shelves have a selection of festive treats.

Stocking up for Christmas

ICELAND is getting ready for Christmas! Iceland’s shops have begun displaying Christmas stock and will have small displays on show this month ready to be fully stocked in plenty of time for Christmas by the end of November. Fuengirola Store Manager David Doolan said: “Christmas is a very exciting time at Iceland.” “We get the shelves stocked with all the festive treats people like to indulge in during the winter months. Some of our best sellers are the chocolate selection boxes including Celebrations and Quality Street or novelty sweets like mince pies, Christmas puddings and Christmas cakes.” “The butchers in store will also begin stocking all the best cuts for a festive roast like turkeys and turkey crowns, along with beef and ham joints.” And David said “the butchers’ counter will begin taking orders as of now, so make sure you don’t miss out, the sooner you order the better.” David explained that the most important thing at Iceland is keeping customers happy, “I think one of the things customers at Iceland like the most about the store is ‘the feeling at home aspect’ and being able to

buy those home comforts and enjoy the friendly customer service that reminds them of the UK.” And in order to make customers feel even more at home the store will be adorned with plenty of Christmas decorations for the festive season, as is tradition in stores across Britain. And keep an eye open for their special promotions which are great value for money. Iceland now has a total of 13 stores overseas in mainland Spain, Tenerife and Portugal and is looking for more sites to build and expand further in areas without access to an English supermarket.

ORDER NOW: The butchers’ counter is fully prepared.

William Harrison a retired expatriate said: “We come to Iceland for all the things we can’t get elsewhere” Olivia 37 lives in Fuengirola said: “I like their selection of salads and vegetables, and it’s nice to come to somewhere to get all the naughty comfort foods you can’t get anywhere else.” Keely Richie 37 said: “I mainly shop for stuff for the kids, cereals, frozen goods, it’s convenient to get the stuff the kids like and sometimes there are really good deals” Laura Varity 34 said: “I love working at Iceland, there’s never a dull moment and we get customers from all over. We get people coming to the Fuegirola store from as far afield as Nerja and Morrocco! They often contact us and we keep items for them so that they aren’t disappointed when they get here.” Gabriel Pajares a Fuengirola resident who studied in the UK says, “When I lived in England I missed my family in Spain a lot during the Christmas period, but my landlord would make me feel welcome and offer me Christmas pudding. Now I often buy them at Iceland to share with my family here in Spain.”

New buyers heading to Islands BUYERS from Mexico and the Nordic Countries are boosting the property market on the Canary Islands. They join German, British, and more recently Russian buyers attracted by a property market that is giving signals of recovery thanks to these

international buyers. Property transactions on the Canary Islands have increased by 16.2 per cent between April and June this year. Mexican buyers especially focus on the tourism property market, that is to say, the buying of hotels and

residential complexes that do not necessarily have to be in a difficult economic situation. Meanwhile, Nordic buyers go the Canary Islands attracted by its climate and scenery. “They want to be able to enjoy being

on a terrace during the months of December and January,” Swedish company Fastighetsbyran representative Gabriel Alzola explained. Nationwide these buyers made an investment of around €2 billion in the property market.

Land prices still falling NOW could be the perfect time to self-build. The price of land in Spain has fallen, making it a very real option for people wanting to build their own Spanish dream home. Compared with the same period in 2012, the average price of urban land fell by 17.4 per cent in the second quarter of the year, to an average €161.5 per square metre; the lowest levels since 2004. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Development, year-on-year the price of land registered a drop despite their quarter-on-quarter appreciation of 2.7 per cent. In towns of less than 1,000 inhabitants the decline was 28.6 per cent compared to the second quarter of 2012.

P&R Direct Rugs Arboleas market and have been trading for over five years. They are firm believers that Spain does have a

winter and contrary to popular belief, it does get very cold during this period. The construction of houses here in Spain is different to that of the UK and heat loss is much greater. Covering your floors with a fitted carpet or a virtual fitted made to measure bespoke rug can cut your heating bills considerably particularly for static home owners. Pam and Bob have worked in the carpet

industry for more than 35 years and know the business inside out, right through from manufacture to the finished product on the floor of your home. Bob is a real craftsman and has certainly had an interesting career including fitting carpet for royalty and the aristocracy. Bob recently fitted the carpet in the new Bull public house in Albox and supplied a bespoke rug for the Albox Online Communication Company. Property owner’s fire plan threat over eviction notice ALBOX homeowner Patricia Martos was prepared to burn her house down after she was threatened with eviction from her property. The property, worth €500,000 has a debt of €89,000. Patricia refurbished the house in order that it could be used as rural tourism housing. Despite the payment of

€4,808 for the licence, a long wait for permission has caused the delay in making use of the home as a tourist destination. That has prevented her from earning the income that would allow her to

pay the mortgage. At the last minute, Patricia received 15 days grace because the authorities had not been presented with all authorisations for eviction.

Through the mediation of a former mayor and Taberno socialist spokesman, who contacted anti-eviction legal services in the province, an agreement was reached that

temporarily suspended the eviction. As a result of the conflict the mayor has made it public that he will not order the municipal police to use force in a similar situation.

Coffee morning a big success ALBOX hosted several coffee mornings in aid of the cancer charity McMillan Nurse UK. One event was hosted by Angie and Phil in Los Marcelinos who worked extremely hard to make the day a great success. The event was very well attended with several stallholders and plenty of entertainment with live music provided by singers Melaney and Marie supported by local radio station Smooth Fm which had a live link-up to the studio.

By Paul Glennie of UK TV Router

T

HERE is currently a huge amount of rumour and scaremongering going on about the possible loss of reception of our favourite UK TV stations via satellite, so I would like to try and give a concise explanation of what is going on. Tip number one is, don’t listen to the pub experts! I will start with an explanation of what has happened so far and then take a look at the changes and timing of the future events: So far: Early in 2012, SES Astra were forced to replace the Astra 2D satellite which then carried most of the Freesat channels (BBC, ITV, etc).

SPOTLIGHT

What is happening with UK Satellite TV? This satellite was not due for replacement for at least another year so its appointed replacement satellite was still under construction. They therefore moved Astra 1N as a temporary replacement to carry on giving service to Freesat and placed the channels on the pan-European beam which resulted in these channels becoming available on a smallish dish in most of Europe. In the second half of 2012, they launched the Astra 2F satellite which at that point was thought to be the full replacement for 1N, but as things turned out only a few channels moved and the majority stayed on 1N. Of the

channels which did move, Channel 5 was probably the most important and we can use Channel 5 as a guide to what may happen in the future. Astra 2E is the next satellite due to launch, it should have gone up in July but the launch was delayed by the explosion of the Proton rocket on the preceding launch from the launch site at Baikonur Cosmodrome. The best estimate I can find at present is for a launch date of around now. If they do manage to launch then this would be followed by a six to 10 week testing period before the channel migration process starts, so the earliest we should see any

change would then be November of this year. What’s the outcome going to be? There are a few suppositions here and as always we can never be certain of the outcome until the new satellite is actually broadcasting. But given that the satellite is built by the same manufacturer, is due to broadcast from the same location at 28.2º and shows identical footprint maps as the 2F satellite which went up last year, it would be reasonable to assume that the coverage will be similar. Effectively this would mean that if you live in an

Neater Heater: Your Norwegian heating solution for winter living in Spain

N

OW in their fourth year of trading as Neater Heater, Richard and Tony are still being asked the same questions. What makes Neater Heaters Special? Why should you choose them over other electric heaters? The simple answer is: design and build quality. Many families throughout the Costa Blanca are enjoying the soft warmth given off by these cleverly designed and unobtrusive Norwegian heaters. A good discrete central heating system has never been so affordable. As Richard and Tony explain: “The basic choices for heating your home are either a full central heating system with water-filled radiators and pipes, or gas estuffas, or electric. Or a combination. “Obviously with central heating the main obstacle is the high installation cost. Also, there is quite a high ongoing maintenance cost. “Gas estuffas are effective, but quite unhealthy, and give off a huge amount of vapour which causes black mould. “This brings us to electric. Until we started Neater Heater the options were

You either bought Jell-filled heaters that were as expensive as a central heating system to buy, or cheap but mostly inefficient - heaters that would make your electric meter wheel spin like helicopter rotors. There was nothing affordable, economical and effective available in Spain. We know, believe us, we looked.”

WINTER WARMTH: Whether wallmounted or free-standing, Neater Heaters fit the bill perfectly.

But sometimes in life luck plays a strange hand. It was while Tony was looking for a heater for his son’s bedroom that, quite by chance, he saw a heater in a house he was doing some maintenance jobs in and it fit the bill perfectly. It was a neat and very efficient, wall-mounted Norwegian convector heater. It could be used as an individual room heater, or as part of a complete integrated system. The rest, as they say, is history and four years down the road Tony and Richard

are making NEATER HEATERS available to us all. The time to buy heaters is before they are needed, so you can get what you want without compromise. Neater Heater has plentiful stock so install them now and you can be happy in the knowledge that when winter arrives you won’t be cold. If you are limited for wall space, we are able to offer custom designed brackets to enable the heater to be used freestanding and to be moved around your house to suit. You can now choose between wall-mounted options or mobile versions.

Alfa Romeo returns lightweight coupes

UPDATED: This special model highlights the sporty side of the original model.

Roadster with a sporty design BMW Motorrad has unveiled the BMW R 1200 R ‘DarkWhite’ special model motorbike, an update of the manufacturer’s R 1200 R launched in 2010. In the R 1200 R ‘DarkWhite’ special model, BMW highlights the sporty side of the original model, something that has always typified BMW roadsters with boxer engines. The special model underlines a contrast between the bodywork with its light white paintwork and the jet black of the drivetrain and wheels. With the frame in an

asphalt grey, swingarm, rear axle housing and triangular wishbone in matt black and the black anodised fork tubes lend the roadster an exclusive high-tech feel, the manufacturer claims. The sports windshield reduces the strain on the rider in the area of the helmet and upper body. The standard sports seat provides perfect contact with the motorcycle. In addition, the R 1200 R ‘DarkWhite’ special model can be individually enhanced with special accessories and optional extras from the extensive BMW Motorrad range.

DESIGNED, engineered and built as a pure driving machine, the new Alfa Romeo 4C marks the brand’s return to the world of lightweight sports coupes. Built at the Maserati plant in Modena, the midengined Alfa Romeo 4C employs the latest technologies of Alfa Romeo’s newest models. In total, global production for the Alfa Romeo 4C is limited to just 3,500 units. Carbon-fibre was chosen for the one-piece monocoque due its high levels of structural rigidity. Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC), which is lighter than both steel and aluminium, is used for the bodywork to help reduce the Alfa Romeo 4C’s overall weight. Less than four metres in length and with a wheelbase of 2.38m metres the Alfa Romeo 4C’s

MINIMALISTIC: Cabin focused on driving. compact shape accentuates its agility. Power comes from a new four-cylinder turbo engine which, thanks to its aluminium block, is 22 kilos lighter than the engine that powers the Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV. Turbo-charged and with direct injection, this new 1750 turbo petrol unit sets new torque and specific power records for this size of engine, at over 200NM and 137hp-per-litre respectively. Accelerating from 0 to 62 mph takes just 4.5 seconds in the new Alfa Romeo 4C, on sale from €53,990 with

deliveries expected early 2014. Due to its lightweight and advanced engine and transmission technologies, its official combined-cycle fuel economy figure is 6.8 litres/100km, its CO2 emissions are just 157g/km. The exhaust has been tuned to emit a full, rich sound and particular attention paid to the seat design so the movement and reactions of the car can be ‘felt’ properly. The steering, unassisted, is progressive, direct and engineered to convey as much feel as possible.

Inside the Alfa Romeo 4C, a multi-function, digital display occupies the instrument binnacle and the steering wheel is a bespoke, flat-bottomed, two-spoke item with integrated paddle gearshifters. The remaining controls are grouped together on the tunnel console, including the buttonoperated TCT transmission selector. Composite bucket seats and aluminium pedals complete the minimalistic, drive-focused cabin.

Q30 Concept aimed at younger customers JAPANESE manufacturer Infiniti revealed the next step in its strategy to expand into new segments with the debut of the Q30 Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The sleek Q30 Concept is the design vision for a compact Infiniti vehicle with a contemporary, individualised character for a new generation of premium customers. “We are becoming the younger, trendsetting brand, more relevant and more exciting,” said Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Ltd.

TRENDSETTING: The Q30 Concept premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

A unique blend of features reminiscing of a coupe, a hatch and a crossover, the Q30 Concept is designed to appeal to younger customers. Designers have explored bolder sculpting and enhanced playfulness, reflecting Infiniti’s alternative to traditional premium automobile brands, the manufacturer claims. Infiniti Q30 Concept is the design precursor for Infiniti’s future compact premium entry to be produced in Sunderland, United Kingdom, starting in 2015.
