A helping hand! Cash grants for taking jobless off dole BUSINESSES that take on the long term unemployed could be in line for cash grants. Torrevieja is aiming to get more people working thanks to the Joint Employment Plan. The aim is to promote the hiring of unemployed people in the city by giving grants to companies who take on the long-term jobless. For the 2013 fiscal year, â‚Ź312,750 has been set aside for the plan which will be used for a maximum of 278 contracts of a minimum 25 hours per week. Workers must be registered unemployed for at least six months.

The promotion of the Joint Employment Plan by Mayor Eduardo Dolon comes as figures released show that 17 per cent of the city’s residents are workers. Proving its status as a retirement city, statistics show that 26 per cent

of the population is over 65 years old. Of the 107,009 registered inhabitants, 18,538 of them work. This compares to the neighbouring municipality of Orihuela, which has a population of 92,087 people and 19,234 Social Security contributors.

Profits up due to new trading hours GREATER freedom for shops and stores in their opening times is being thanked for the increase in tourist purchases in the Valencia region. According to the National Association of Large Distribution Companies (ANGED), there has been a strong growth in purchases by foreign tourists in the region between January and August, compared to the same period last year. Whilst visitors increased by 12 per cent, sales have risen by 20 per cent which they say has been “driven by the liberalisation of trading hours.” In Valencia City after declaring an area to have a high tourist inflow at the start of the year,

Father banned from seeing children attempts suicide A PORTUGESE man attempted suicide by setting fire to himself in the centre of Murcia’s shopping district. He is currently in a critical condition in hospital with 80 per

cent burns. Witnesses say he had a placard saying he had been refused access to his children and as a result, would set himself on fire.

It is understood the man has two children, both of whom have mental disabilities. When their mother died they were placed in a home with the father having regular visits.

However, staff complained of his increasingly violent behaviour towards them and a temporary ban on visits was put in place while an evaluation was carried out.

Working unpaid overtime EMPLOYEES in the Valencia region worked an extra 4.1 million hours in 2012. The unpaid overtime is the equivalent of 2,172 40 hour contracts, and is saving companies more than €2,000 on the annual payroll per worker. The average employee find themselves working an extra 3.2 hours a week for no extra money.

This is an increase from 2011 when they were expected to work an average 2.3 hours extra. The authors of the report used data from the International Confederation of Private Employment Agencies (CIETT) and the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. However, Ana Garcia, Head of Employment and Training at CCOO union said the

actual figure is expected to be higher: “We are sure that there are many more hours than the report says. “Employers are using fear as a weapon. Overtime has always been there, but now it is unpaid.” A recent study by Adecco, a human resources company, puts the average salary of a full-time worker in the Valencia region at €20,818 per year.

If you hear a refrain of ‘shiver me timbers’ and are accused of being a landlubber, it is because today (Thursday) is ‘International Talk Like a Pirate Day.’ From small beginnings it has swept the world and is now entrenched in 40 countries worldwide. The holiday was created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol’ Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap’n Slappy) of Albany, Oregon, initially as a private joke. The native English West Country dialect is considered the origin of the ‘pirate accent.’ That has led to difficulties for Spaniards wanting to join in the fun. By Dilip Kuner A LITTLE girl who desperately needs intensive therapy will get her treatment thanks to a local expatriate charity shop. Last week the Euro Weekly News reported how the family of five-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer Keira faced a race against time to raise €2,500 after a disappointing turnout at a fundraiser. After reading of her plight John Griffiths of the Moraira Charity Shop was so moved he got in touch with the family and pledged to pay the full cost of the treatment. That has left Keira’s mother Debbie delighted. She said: “I want to thank them a million times. Thank you so much to everyone there, and thank you to the Euro Weekly News for publishing the story. “One minute I was lying in bed with a migraine trying to think what I could do to raise the money, the next an email popped up from John with the offer. You can imagine the relief I felt.” John said: “When I read about Keira we just had to help. Everyone on the ruling committee felt it was a very deserving cause.” More information: www. morairacharityshop.com.

A woman’s work is never done!

BUSINESS EXTRA

I

READ an article this week written by a woman who says she feels guilty about spending her husband’s earnings. The woman described how she has always been a hard worker and enjoyed making purchases for herself and her husband using her salary, but since having a baby she now doesn’t feel as comfortable spending as she describes it - ‘his’ cash. When she was working, she says she wouldn’t have thought twice about buying lunch out or a new top, but since giving birth to a little girl and stepping back from her desk job the writer is hesitant to spend, as she doesn’t see the income coming into the house as her money! I imagine this attitude

is something that might enter many women’s heads if they decide to

IT’S YOURS: His money is your money too. stay at home and look after a newborn, but it’s an attitude that makes the 1950’s look progressive and a stop needs to be put to such negative thinking immediately.

A woman looking after a newborn baby is working, and often working long, hard, tiresome days at that. It’s an important job bringing up a child and it deserves to be valued

in the same way that professions outside the home are valued. The decision to have a baby is a joint effort, so there is no need for any stay-at-home mum, or dad for that matter, to feel uncomfortable about spending what should be considered as being the family’s money. Obviously, if one income is lost after having a baby, it’s wise not to be wheeling the new pram around town spending carelessly. It’s important to be organised and stick to a budget, but a stay-athome mum or dad should never feel as if the worker has the only claim to an income. In an ideal world it should be shared and spent fairly between the worker outside the house and the worker inside the home.

Telefonica plotting a comeback… TELEFONICA, which has been suffering in the domestic market, has predicted better times ahead. The company has been losing customers to cheaper rivals, particularly from its Movistar mobile brand. Luis Miguel Gilperez, CEO of Telefónica España, had pinned his hopes on ‘bundling’ together landline, ADSL and mobile products plus TV into one monthly payment under its Fusion banner. Since its launch the Fusion bundles have signed up 2.8 million customers. But despite its efforts

many cash strapped Spaniards are still moving to budget companies. Many mobile customers do not necessarily want to pay for a landline as well. So it remains cheaper to switch to other providers, many of whom offer free or very cheap data downloads as well as phone calls. Others offer good value ADSL internet deals and landline at very competitive prices. Movistar mobile lost 248,000 customers during March which brought its loss of customers in the first three months of the year to 700,000.

New chairman for Pescanova

IN CHARGE: Luis Miguel Gilperez, CEO of Telefonica España. Spain’s mobile virtual network operators companies that offer a service using bigger providers’ infrastructure gained 210,000 customers in March alone. But Telefonica at a press conference has said that it is confident of an upswing in its fortunes. Gilperez said although not yet back to growth, the company

was close to reversing the trend of losing customers. It is planning to launch some innovative and cost effective products. These include the ability to use data ‘bought’ on a contract to be shared across different devices, negating the need for pricey contracts across all a household’s devices. And it plans to roll out the most modern and

fastest 4G mobile network across Spain at no extra cost to consumers. That is in contrast to other countries where customers who want 4G will have to pay a premium, usually around an extra €5 to €10 a month. It claims that 50 per cent of the country will have access to its 4G coverage by Christmas.

INSOLVENT frozen fish company Pescanova has appointed a new chairman. Shareholders decided to put Juan Manuel Urgoiti into the hot seat to guide the company through what is expected to be a lengthy insolvency process. The previous chairman left amid charges of insider trading and falsifying information. Manuel Fernandez de Sousa who left the post in April denied any wrongdoing. He and nine other executives are under court investigation. Urgoiti is a former chairman of Banco Gallego and sits on the board of directors of retailer Inditex, owner of Zara.

Gibraltar suffered as well! MR GRAHAM (Issue 1471) is quite right in praising Malta’s George Cross, but totally wrong about everything else. No one in Gibraltar has called for it to be granted to Gibraltar. The initiative has come from an English MEP. For the record, Gibraltar was bombed during World War 2 by both the French and Italians. The majority of the population had been removed to French Morocco only to be rounded up at gunpoint when France fell and crammed into ships that were obliged to sail to the nearest friendly port, Gibraltar, as they had no food or water. A second evacuation settled people in Madeira, Jamaica and, the bulk, in Blitz-torn and V-bombed London! Worse than that, our Indian Community was shipped to India, captured by a German raider, shipped to France, their ship torpedoed by a British submarine and the survivors interned in German Concentration Camps. Most of the population suffered five or six years of exile but some lingered in makeshift camps in Ireland away from home and family for 15 years. All able bodied persons helped in the war effort, not forgetting those in essential posts in Gibraltar. Since then, Gibraltar has contributed to the defence of democracy during The Korean War, the ‘withdrawal from Empire,’ the Falklands War and all the recent conflicts in the near and Middle East. Despite all this, no one in Gibraltar has ever asked for the George Cross. Charles Rosado (by email)

Parking blues I AGREE with Allen Everington (Issue 1469) and Mick Scarles (Issue 1470) with regards to people parking in disabled parking bays without a badge. Just as bad are the people who abuse the parking privileges that come with a disabled badge. In the past few weeks I have seen four different cars parked in a disabled bay, display a badge and walk away with no apparent disability and there has not been anyone else in the car. A couple from Holland in Moraira parked in a disabled bay next to an empty normal space, put the badge on the dashboard and were quicker than us into the store. Len Atkinson, Benichembla, (Alicante)

Despite of.... MR ERIC CONWAY (letters, Issue 1470) refers to Oxford and Cambridge as though the Catholic Church set them up in their present form, when this actually came about gradually in spite of religious control, not because of it. The early religious academies functioned more as places of indoctrination according to dogma rather than as centres of inquiry and the search for knowledge and understanding. The non-acceptance by the medieval Church of factual discoveries about the physical world is well known, as is the forced retractions made by men of knowledge under Church duress. The ‘unprecedented human achievement’ of the Renaissance owed more to the discovery of Arab translations of Greek and Roman

texts and to Gutenberg’s invention of printing with re-usable type than to any positive input by the Church. I have no problem with people following their bliss but I think it diminishes their credence when, in their bliss, they either misrepresent historical facts or erase them altogether. Eric Robinson, La Herradura (Granada)

Lanes needed I WAS interested to read the report about how poor Malaga’s cycling lanes are (CDS Issue 1471). The city is not alone. Cyclists in Spain are very badly catered for. I have read motorists complain about cyclists, but really the majority of us would rather not use the roads or pedestrian paths in town. Well designed cycleways are in everyone’s interests, leaving the roads for cars and pathways for pedestrians. Samantha Lacalle, Nerja (Malaga)

So sorry! I WOULD like to say sorry that we had to cancel the paella at the Arts & Crafts Market in Rojales on Saturday evening Sept 7. Many visitors complained about that, but I had to make the decision early on due to rain and the

possibility of cancelling the event. Secondly, sorry I wasn’t able to do demonstrations or portraits due to lack of space. Thirdly, sorry that the event was severely curtailed with only a fraction of the artists expected, but they didn’t want their precious work ruined by rain. One visitor said “Is this all there is?” - but at least it went ahead! But better than turning out to find nothing there, I hope. The event started at 7pm but at 6pm it was still likely to be cancelled and it was only because I knew the gallery cave - Sala Mengolero - was empty and I suggested we used it, that the event happened. Thanks go to Rojales Town Hall for allowing use of Sala Mengolero at the last minute. Also thanks to the artists and artisans and the Funtastic Dixieland band. Martin, Rojales (Alicante)

Another mystery RE the ‘Mystery Statue in Marbella,’ (Costa del Sol, Issue 1470). I always admire this when leaving Venta Los Pacos, but there is more of his work in Marbella in Carib Playa in the beach restaurant Rama. It has to be by the same artist as it is nearly identical, and at Rama the trees are alive! Jamie Stonehewer (By email). Editor’s note: The Euro Weekly News reported on a mystery statue on Marbella’s Golden Mile, the origins of which are lost in the mists of time.

Thank you I AM writing in appreciation of the article on page 2 (Issue 1470, Costa del Sol) regarding the fire and our horses which have found a new home in Barranco Blanco. This is very much appreciated especially the accompanying photo... a very big thank you. Vera Wates (Malaga) Editor’s note: The EWN reported how Equinatural, a charity that looks after abandoned horses, had found a new home after a massive bush fire that swept across parts of Mijas, Coin, Alhaurin el Grande Marbella and Ojen (Malaga) last year.

Automatic Exchange Of Information As A Global Standard

2013 has seen unprecedented political support for automatic exchange of information. Various multilateral initiatives are being developed, and on 6th September the G20 announced plans to introduce automatic exchange of information as the global standard. Governments and tax authorities will start to receive much more information than ever before on their taxpayers’ financial affairs. In 2009, triggered by the financial crisis, the 20 wealthy nations declared that the “era of banking secrecy is over”. Within four years 119 jurisdictions had committed to the global standard for transparency and exchange of information for tax purposes developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Around 1,100 new bilateral agreements had been signed. Tax authorities everywhere, including in Spain, have continued to explore more ways to co-operate and prevent taxpayers hiding assets and income overseas. Activity escalated this year, with the EU, G5, G8 and UK offshore centres all making significant

By Bill Blevins, Financial Correspondent, Blevins Franks announcements. Even Swiss bankers suggested it is time to change direction, initially by dropping banking secrecy for EU residents. Tax evasion is a global issue, so a model for automatic exchange of information needs to be developed and used worldwide to prevent people moving money elsewhere. We have therefore seen a move from the traditional bilateral agreements between two countries to multilateral agreements where several countries share vital information. At the September G20 Summit world leaders committed to

automatic exchange of information as the new global standard. They “fully endorse the OECD proposal for a truly global model for multilateral and bilateral automatic exchange of information” and will work together to present a new single standard by mid-2014. They aim to have all G20 members automatically exchanging information on tax matters by the end of 2015, and called on all other jurisdictions to join them by the earliest possible date. The G20 also pledged to close loopholes that allow tax avoidance by big businesses, and to help developing nations, not part of the international convention, to track funds in tax havens and improve their ability to prevent tax evasion. The G20 commitment is viewed as a major breakthrough in the global fight against tax fraud. It will provide authorities with much more

power to track down tax evaders and assets hidden overseas. This will be welcome news for the Spanish authorities who are focusing on overseas assets and increasing investigations. Expansión newspaper reported in July that, following last year’s tax amnesty, the Spanish tax agency has been asking taxpayers for proof of the source of the funds declared or clarification on discrepancies. Requests are being sent by both the Department for Administration of Taxes and Department for Investigations. The requests are more numerous and detailed than in the past. Regular taxpayers are being targeted as well as those who took advantage of the amnesty. As Expansión concluded, “it is clear that offshore assets are being targeted for full investigation.” The tax authorities will be going through all the 720 forms received

earlier this year, looking for discrepancies between the overseas assets declared and the data they have on file. All the new exchange of information agreements coming into force will enable them to check the declarations, to ensure that the information reported was correct, and that all overseas assets were included in Form 720 and none were left out. The consequences for failing to report an asset can be devastating. The days of financial privacy are long gone. This does not mean that you cannot still arrange your assets in a tax efficient way. There are effective, legitimate arrangements available to Spanish residents which can significantly lower your tax liabilities and in such a way that you need not worry about Form 720. You should seek specialist, individual advice. To keep in touch with the latest developments in the offshore world, check out the latest news on our website www.blevinsfranks.com

Mad to even think of voting for Labour after their squandering HOW could anyone in their right mind even consider voting Labour at the next election? Personally the idea of Miliband, Balls and co. actually empowered to introduce just about anything that even vaguely controls the way we exist, fills me with absolute horror. Last week’s conference did precisely nothing to change my views. The only thing I agreed with in the whole sorry, uninspiring shambles, was the pathetic smattering of applause that greeted Miliband’s final summary. As a lifelong Conservative, I am still of the unshakable opinion that the UK is a business and should be run as such. Left wingers, with their ‘everybody out’ and ‘a better deal for the workers’ piffle is just that. Unadulterated hypocritical claptrap. Workers only prosper when the business prospers. Wages only rise when profits become healthier. Keep handing out more than is coming in and there can be only one inevitable result - bankruptcy.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT NEXT ELECTION: Who to vote for. Which is exactly what happened when the ‘New’ Labour brigade took over. Conned by self-ambitious Tony Blair, they inherited a business that, under the Conservatives, was thriving (with a basically happy and suitably rewarded work force) and proceeded to run it into the ground. In the end they even sold off our gold reserves - at an absolute pittance I may add. Labour and its

OTHERS THINK IT leftwing incompetence, couldn’t run a tombola at a church hall - let alone a UK INC. In an effort to replace millions of disgruntled voters they then opened the immigrant flood gates. Without a single thought for the decent British hard working men and women, who had sacrificed their time and energy to help put the

country firmly on its feet, they subsequently allowed in a positive deluge of often spongers and grabbers, without a patriotic bone in their bodies, who then proceeded to bleed the country dry. Our National Health Service, schools and public services, which should have been part of the British people’s reward for their hard work, are now strained to breaking point and will take years to recover - if ever. They squandered even more money by attempting to bribe the masses with handouts and subsequently created a vast army of spongers who consider working for a living a mugs’ game. They embroiled us in a war which cost billions and brought the misery of death and maiming into thousands of British homes. And some of you want to vote them back in. Keep the faith. Love Leapy. END COLUMN Giant leap into space A FROG was caught by specially designed, remote cameras on the side of NASA’s LADEE rocket during its takeoff from Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

Bump bust A CANADIAN woman was arrested in Columbia for trying to smuggle two kilos of cocaine using a fake pregnancy bump.

Andes man A MAN who disappeared in the Andes four months ago has been found alive after surviving on rats and raisins. He got lost in a snowstorm trying to cross the mountains when his motorbike broke down.

The agony and the ecstasy TO my knowledge a question that has never been asked or answered. Was your marriage better than that of a society wedding? My recent marriage to my Ukrainian bride, Nadezhda (Nadia) could hardly be bettered. I would say that wouldn’t I. However, what made it special was the euphoric enthusiasm of multi-national friends and officials in their Mike Walsh determination to make our tying the knot special. Mike Walsh. Our betrothal was made possible by an office that had in the past brought together ‘in holy matrimony’ Sean Connery, Roger Moore, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Lawrence Harvey and similar romantics. What can be said of our entourage? The practical support and well wishes poured in from Russia, the Ukraine, France, Britain, Spain and the Baltic States. On our return we stayed at a friend’s Sotogrande villa where we received a celebratory call from a country’s EU representative. In my idle moments, I reflect on the enormous wealth that international marriages bring to Gibraltar. Each such marriage, including an entourage of 100 people, could easily add £100,000 (€118,500) to the local economy. A diplomatic spat over an artificial reef costs a lot of money; so does turning away besotted couples intent on marriage.

ANGELA MERKEL: Livid.

Cassandra Nash

A weekly look and not entirely impartial reaction – to the Spanish political scene

Olympics were a luxury neither Madrid nor the country could afford. Treasury minister Luis de Guindos had vowed that cash would be available. So spend it on Health or Education, comes the call now. De Guindos could explain at length why he cannot but few will listen. Social wellbeing is currently the country’s biggest preoccupation, not sport. Except football, of course.

War games SPAIN had little stomach for international wars until Aznar trotted after Bush and Blair into Iraq, doing himself no good at all. And then along came Rajoy, present at the G20 meeting and staunchly adding Spain’s name to the joint resolution

from Britain, France and Italy supporting Obama on Syria. This went down well with the US but badly in Spain where 96 per cent oppose military action. Still worse, Angela Merkel was livid. It was wrong, she said, to sign the statement without knowing where other EU members, absent from the G20 meeting, stood. Rajoy afterwards hastened to clarify that Spain was not “expressing support for a specific military action.” The suspicion remains that the rectification was for the German chancellor’s benefit, not Spain’s.

Main undoing A RECENT POLL showed the PP and PSOE neck and neck. If there were elections tomorrow, Rajoy might not squeeze home. His huge parliamentary majority has been his undoing because the government’s disdain for consensus is alienating potential voters. Rajoy could not keep his

election promises regarding the economy and unemployment, but he has been able to carry out election threats. Labour reforms designed to combat austerity and create more jobs went through parliament like a dose of salts but created more austerity and fewer jobs. This has lost him the support of first-time PP voters. Unpopular abortion reforms have been delayed for almost two years although Justice minister Alberto RuizGallardon plans to resuscitate them in October. This one is likely to cause concern even to women (and men) who usually vote PP. A popular slogan with women’s groups translates as “Keep your rosaries out of our ovaries” and Rajoy must lose the PPChurch alliance image if he hopes to attract non-PP voters.

SPAIN’S Olympic Committee set off so hopefully to Buenos Aires. This was going to be third time lucky, wasn’t it? It wasn’t. “This isn’t sport, it’s politics,” said a committee member after suffering defeat in the first round. It was politics although a few high-profile doping scandals didn’t help. The desolation visible in the faces of the Spanish delegation from Prince Felipe downwards on being eliminated in round one was less evident back home. Many felt the

Rebalance and heal with the help of the angels BODY HARMONY has been relaxing, rejuvenating and helping to restore people’s health in Spain since 2005. Christine Quinlan, an experienced and certified practitioner in Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Therapeutic Massage, Indian Head Massage, the Bowen Technique, Hopi Ear Candling, Angelic Reiki Healing as well as being a Reiki Master, started Body Harmony in 2000 in Cardiff, Wales before she resettled in urbanisation La Marina. Over the last eight years, she has enjoyed a regular clientele. Some have remained with her ever since those early days, others have returned to the UK, while new ones arrive. All are a testimony to her calming and friendly manner, healing hands and reasonable prices that have remained unchanged. As well as offering treatments, as a member of the International Federation of Therapists (IFT) the professional board for certified practitioners, Christine is able to offer several courses including Indian Head Massage, Reiki, Reflexology and Hopi Ear Candling. These one to one courses are tailored around the student’s availability and range in length. She is

also able to offer Archangel Michael attunements for those who are interested in angels and want to connect with them. Christine said: “You can connect to Archangel Michael’s energy to use for yourself and you can then call him at any time and attune people yourself to this wonderful energy.” Christine explains that Archangel Michael is the mighty warrior angel who protects the vulnerable and gives strength and courage to those who need it. Christine uses her connections with angels to offer clients Angelic Reiki; a powerful system of personal empowerment and healing. During a healing treatment Christine works as a bridge for the angel’s energy to pass to the recipient, allowing them to let go of physical, emotional and karmic imbalances, offering a deep sense of relaxation and feeling of well-being. “Anyone can benefit from Angelic Reiki healing. If you have already had a Reiki treatment and enjoy the feeling, just imagine the difference when you add the angel energy to the Reiki energy.” For more information, call 966 795 103 or visit www.bodyharmony therapies.co.uk.

HEALTHIER: Still looks and feels like smoking. Advertising feature

Stop smoking and start vaping!

YOU don’t want to give up smoking. It’s difficult, and anyway you like the nicotine hit. There is a definite satisfaction in smoking you don’t want to lose. However, perhaps you don’t like the idea of the 4,000 harmful chemicals that the Cancer Research UK team say are in tobacco. According to them the following are just a small selection of harmful carcinogens contained in your regular cigarette: ammonia, benzene, acetone, formaldehyde, tar, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon

monoxide, lead and arsenic. Ugh! Surely there must be an answer! Well of course there is. In the form of electronic cigarettes. They mainly contain food flavourings, water and nicotine. Instead of ‘smoking’, you start ‘vaping.’ Harmless water vapour is emitted. It feels like smoking, it looks like smoking and it tastes like smoking! The differences are that you don’t subject those around you to secondary smoking which is just as much a danger as smoking itself. Give your loved ones, including your children a

break. You might think that you are not getting enough of ‘a nicotine hit’ with electronic cigarettes. The answer is simply just upgrade to a higher strength. If you are getting too much nicotine, drop down the scale. There are five strengths available. It just takes a little patience and experimentation until you get it right. You can also get the nicotine hit whilst enjoying the flavours of strawberry, blueberry and many other flavours. Think of the advantages, ‘smoke’ anywhere, no lighters or matches. No ashtrays and sweeter breath as well. You will find a very large range to choose from, catering for the lovers of the classic range that look like a cigarette and also for those that like the idea of a refillable system. There are also e-Pipes for pipe smokers and e-Cigars for the cigar smoker. The range has grown enormously recently in a bid to satisfy all tastes and all preferences. There are referral discounts available and also quantity discounts for shops, bars, restaurants and for just those that want to sell to friends and acquaintances. Find out more now. Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson and Michelle Rodrigez. Directed by Justin Lin. Runtime 130 minutes. Rated 12.

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) By showing confidence in your own way of doing things, you inspire others. This is chiefly because you are at last finding a balance between work and home life. In the past you may have felt stressed and equated that with working - not so now. LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Because you are intent on pleasing others, you may be cramping your own style. This is something that you have in abundance and it should be used. You may be feeling that a business idea does not stand a chance and, in any case, you donʼt want to risk any money. . SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) A juicy bit of gossip comes your way this week and it is hard to keep it quiet. You must do so, however, because there is a lot riding on it. When people trust you, they are saying much about the relationship. In this particular case, the person may well be able to progress you socially at some time in the future. SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) The rather more serious side of your nature needs to take over this week. Someone in a higher position is keeping an eye on you. This may be because they are considering you for promotion, so be on your best behaviour. It is important at the moment to stick to any rules and regulations or your reputation (and pocket) could be hit. CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Letting life get too tame will eventually irritate you no end. Your social life needs a boost which, in turn, helps romance blossom. It is easy to be a bit lazy when things are going smoothly but we all need constant stretching. With an active mind such as yours, the important thing is to keep making progress. This may be in a physical way or in some kind of business. AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) A chance remark alluding to your past brings a flashback. This helps you to see a current situation more clearly. We all make mistakes and follow the same old

TOP TEN www.bva.org.uk MAGICIANS

MAGIC has evolved considerably in the last century; today’s magicians are a daring breed who routinely put their lives at risk in order to shock audiences. Magnificently exciting, unnerving and totally unpredictable, the magicians of this century are taking tricks to another level.

Love conquers all BOOKS books@euroweeklynews.com

1Criss Angel

Star of American TV series Criss Angel Mindfreak, Criss is singlehandedly reinventing modern day magic with his dramatic illusions. Criss has worked on shows with Cirque de Soleil and shocked Las Vegas onlookers when he performed a stunt and walked on water across a swimming pool.

2 Derren Brown

The British ‘psychological illusionist’ uses a combination of suggestion and misdirection in his outlandish performances to exploit how the brain fills in the missing gaps. His victims do the majority of the work by absorbing the subliminal messaging he plants. His most famous stunt to date involved playing Russian roulette with a loaded gun and a member of the public.

3 David Copperfield

The world’s foremost illusionist, David Copperfield - described by Forbes magazine as the most commercially successful magician - has wowed audiences around the world with enormous, eye-popping stunts that have included levitating over the Grand Canyon and walking through the Great Wall of China.

Without ever falling into the trap of being a tourist guide of Tenerife, Morton’s book offers the reader a visual feast, a detailed view of the island, its scenery, its people and its culture. It’s a well-constructed love story and thriller with plenty of suspense, false trails and action. The bad people get their comeuppance, the good find

for stunts including staying in an ice enclosure for two days and suspending himself above the Thames for 44 days in a transparent, Plexiglas case.

5Lance Burton

Hailed as ‘the most brilliant magician of this century,’ this two-time Magician of the Year has performed his tricks in front of presidents and foreign royalty. Lance’s speciality illusion includes levitating anything from body parts to cars.

6 Penn & Teller

The American illusionists and entertainers have performed together since the 1970s, and are renowned for their numerous stage and television shows. Their tricks are shocking yet comical and contain fantasy violence including Teller being submerged in a huge container of water or being run over by an 18-wheel tractor-trailer.

This American stand-up comedian and magician is also known as the ‘Freddy Krueger of Comedy’ for the level of gore incorporated in his Vegas shows, which often include him apparently sucking on his own eyeball, cutting his wrists and skewering his tongue.

7Steve Wyrick

American magician and Vegas showman Wyrick has won the prestigious Merlin Award as Magician of the Year from the International Magician’s Society for his signature trick ‘Blades of Death.’ The illusion sees him effortlessly walk through the blades on the turbine of a 747 airplane.

8 Siegfried and Roy

Although they may not necessarily be modern, considering their careers ended 10 years ago, Siegfried and Roy are certainly worth mentioning for their flamboyant and extraordinary shows involving wild animals including tigers and lions. One of their most memorable acts included making an elephant disappear in the blink of an eye.

www.euroweeklynews.com SALADS are a versatile dish. Served warm or cold, as a side or as the main meal, they fit in every occasion. Almost any ingredient is suitable for a salad, and they can elevate them into a fine cuisine dish when the produce is good and seasonable. Equally varied are salad dressings, although people usually stick to the classic French, Caesar or ranch dressings. In Spain olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper make up the traditional dressing, but there are a whole lot of possibilities

Elevate your salad with new dressings to make salads stand out. A good variation of the traditional dressing is the lime honey mustard dressing. Honey softens the lime’s sour acidic flavour, while a sprinkle of coriander gives an earthy fresh touch. Unusual in savoury dishes, cinnamon can be used in dressings to bring new flavours to salads. Combined with olive oil, vinegar and a bit of hot pepper sauce this dressing will give any salad a little kick. Any vegetable salad can turn into an Indian dish by adding curry vinaigrette. Apart from adding a wonderful flavour, this spice provides many health benefits. A feta cheese dressing

adds an extra creaminess and Greek flavours to any salad. With plain yoghurt as a base, this dressing arouses Mediterranean flavours using dried oregano and

garlic. Those looking to give their salads an Asian touch will find the zingy wasabi

Chocolate digestives come out

SALMON: Rich in omega 3 fatty accids.

Salmon can prevent rheumatoid arthritis EATING fish rich in omega 3 fatty acids can reduce the risk of having rheumatoid arthritis in women. A study carried out by scientists from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm (Sweden) on 32,000 women has

confirmed that eating a portion of oily fish per week can prevent this illness. Results showed that the risk of having rheumatoid arthritis decreased by 29 per cent in women who ate 0,21 grams per day, the

equivalent to a portion per week. “This is the first study that attributes omega 3 fatty acids present in fish such as salmon or trout a protective effect,” said researcher author Daniela Di.

THE chocolate digestive has come out as Britain’s favourite biscuit. Nearly a quarter of Britons questioned in the survey said they would opt for the chocolatey treat ahead of any other variety. Plain digestives came second with chocolate chip cookies, bourbons and custard creams making up the rest of the top five.

A

S more and more children are being given phones we asked readers how young was too young to have a phone. At what age should children own a mobile phone? Do you see any danger in younger children using mobile phones? Five years is too young for children to have a mobile phone, said Mick and Janet O’Hanrahan, 68, both retired and now living in Arboleas. “Around the age of 12 is when they start to get independent and is a good age to start. We can’t see any real danger if they use a locked mobile phone. Tania Hanks, 42, a part time supermarket worker on holiday in Almeria, lives in Norfolk, England. She said: “My eldest daughter had a mobile phone at 10 years old. We live in a small village and

VICTORIA: Absolutely not. she walks or bikes up to the next village to see friends so it is handy to keep in touch. “I had to cancel internet access on the phone because it is easy to view inappropriate content and phones can easily get damaged. She added that her two younger children do not have a phone. My grandson has one, he is seven, and he uses it to play games, listen to music, take photos and even read books. He has the internet turned off on it though. Mothers we spoke to on the Costa Blanca thought a child

having a phone by the age of five was ridiculous. Children under 10 were too young to have a phone, said mother of three Victoria Vasey, aged 31 from La Marina. “They should not have one, absolutely not. My eldest was 13 when she got one. It is OK from when they are a teenager at high school and they start going out by themselves a bit. I do know someone who just bought her six-year-old an iPhone. Sheena Parkington, 34, a mother of one, agrees it is not necessary for a young child to have a phone but believes it is more a British thing she said: “I think in the UK it is more about peer pressure. Spain isn’t so gadget orientated or into having the latest items or designer clothes, so I don’t think Spanish children would have a phone so young.

No one could ever doubt their dedication to the animals; despite Paul’s allergy to his feline friends, he and his wife Carol sourced the perfect property to enable them to open their own cattery. Situated in Hondon de las Nieves, the couple purchased their finca and opened the cattery in 2006. Carol has over 20 years of veterinary care, so owners know their precious pets are in safe hands. If they need extra care, medication, injections, special diets if they are very old, young or just plain normal cats, they will all be lavished with love and care. Every cat is welcomed as long as they have up to date vaccinations. Each unit has its own run with a centrally heated house; the houses have tiled roofs so your cat can sit up

We also work in conjunction with Puntovet veterinary clinic in Aspe.” Isolation units are available if needed and every unit is disinfected, all linen laundered and litter boxes sterilised. The challenges of a Spanish garden By Dick Handscombe SPANISH gardens in all areas with Mediterranean climates present challenges compared to gardening in the UK. We suggest the following: Build up fitness and strength before tackling the heavy jobs. Get used to wearing a sunhat on the hottest days. maintenance required when you start to design, construct and plant up the garden. Start a compost heap for kitchen and garden rubbish as soon as you move in so that within six months you will have compost to mix into the soil. Select plants that are reasonably drought resistant and frost resistant if inland - we indicate these in Part Four of our book ‘Your garden in Spain.’ Plan to grow at least some of your own fruit and vegetables. growing books were written to help you in getting going and avoiding the problems that we had in our early days. If you plan a pool for the hot summer months consider covering it with a sliding roof and installing solar water heating. ‘Growing healthy vegetables in Spain’ has a special section on growing vegetables in containers. These are the best reasons for living in Spain. © Dick Handscombe www.gardenspain.com gardenspain2@yahoo. com

Simply Pro Floor Care

www.euroweeklynews.com

GIVE your floors a new lease of life with Simply Pro Floor Care, specialists in restoring and polishing marble and stone floors. Owned and run by Mike Butler, he is an expert in his field, having previously owned a large cleaning company in the UK with over 30 years experience in the cleaning industry. After moving to Spain and realising the problems people had keeping their marble floors shiny and sparkly he retrained and attended several stone restoration courses in London to become a specialist restorer and cleaner.

GOOD AS NEW: Mike Butler has years of professional expertise. Marble and other stone floors will stand up to a lot of use but things like hard water, dirt, grit and shoes will eventually make that once lovely floor look tired and lack lustre. But Mike

can bring up the shine in dull floors, repair chips and cracks and remove marks that may have been made by drinks, furniture or standard cleaning products, making them look brand new. He also restores stairs, work tops, vanity units and fireplaces. There is no job too small or large, inside or out, for Simply Pro Floor Care. Whilst your marble and stone are getting a new look, why not treat your upholstery also. Rugs can be cleaned on site or, if you have a few that require cleaning, he can pick them up and bring them back at your convenience.

Mike is based in Los Montesinos and works throughout the Costa Blanca and Murcia region; he is fully insured and registered in Spain and has worked at Roda Golf, La Finca, Las Ramblas, El Raso and many other resorts in the south east. Call Mike on 691 649 515 or 966 721 331 or email simplyprofloorcare@hotmai l.com to arrange a no obligation quote. He is happy to come to your home and give you a free demonstration on any marble, or other stone requiring polishing or restoration to show the sort of results you can expect.

Foreign buyers help boost house sales LATEST figures released by the Government indicate that the fall in house prices could be slowing down. On June 30 this year, prices were an average of 12 per cent lower than the previous year, although this figure varied with Murcia’s prices on average being 16.6 per cent lower, while Ceuta’s was 7.6 per cent. This decline had slowed by around 3.5 per cent in the second quarter of the year. Between April 1 and June 30, over 80,000 residential properties were sold across Spain according to Government statistics. Over the 12 month period, ending June 30, a total of 345,471 properties were sold, marking an increase of 2.3 per cent over the previous 12 months. Purchases made by international buyers accounted for 16.9 per cent; the highest number of foreign buyers since the statistic was first calculated in 2006.

Homes to be saved by the new coastal law MORE than 7,900 homes built on the Basque Country coast will be saved due to the new Spanish coastal law. These homes, built when the 1988 coastal law came into force, were in danger as their authorisation was expected to expire in 2018 allowing their demolition. Now these homes are safe under the new coastal law passed by the Spanish Parliament in May. But this new law is no amnesty. According to Environment Secretary, Federico Ramos, sentences already handed down ordering the demolition of any of these houses will have to be

OUT OF DANGER: Properties will be saved by paying a tax on their value. obeyed. “The Spanish Government is optimistic as most of these houses fell in a legal grey area.” Also affected are 21 hotels, 78 beach bars and restaurants and 39 factories as well as the 7,992 homes soon to be saved.

Together they generate more than 2,500 jobs and have a turnover of nearly €42 million. These homes and businesses will be allowed to stay on the coast by paying a tax depending on their value.

From down-and-out to rich and famous - it can work! NORA JOHNSON

DFREE / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

THE university graduate who felt ‘humiliated’ at having to perform a David Brent-style dance during an interview for a Currys job in South Wales got me thinking about interviews. Many of us have experienced sessions where you undergo a series of challenges and tests with other candidates and the best get chosen. Always nerve-racking. The worst part the end, where they split the group into two and tell you you’re doing another test. Your group’s then led through a door where somebody’s waiting to tell you: “Unfortunately you guys haven’t made it through. Thanks for coming and please use the rear exit.” X-Factor style. And that’s part of the problem. Reality shows like X-Factor which instantly (and, apparently, effortlessly) make contestants into ‘celebrities’ that young people strive to emulate. Coupled with the fact many seem to think the

Breaking Views A Costa del Sol resident for a number of years, Nora is the author of psychological suspense and crime thrillers. To comment on any of the issues raised in her column, go to www.euroweeklynews.com/columnists/nora-johnson

world revolves around them - the ‘me me me’ generation - and that they’re the star of the show. But success is neither instant nor effortless. Before JK Rowling started writing Harry Potter, she struggled as a single mother living off welfare. Likewise the American novelist Stephen King and actors Sarah Jessica Parker, Demi Moore and Hilary Swank all had difficult beginnings. Surely though, the greatest rags-to-riches story of our era is that of Oprah Winfrey. Born into abject poverty in rural Mississippi,

OPRAH WINFREY: From rags to riches success story. Winfrey transformed herself from news anchor to talk-show host to head of her own multiplatform media empire now worth $2.7

billion (€2.03 billion). Pretty sure she didn’t let the least bit of ‘humiliation’ hold her back! We frequently read about sales

jobs in UK high street chains attracting hordes of applicants. With such competition they’re able to pick and choose those who’ll best sell their products in a tough marketplace. With youth unemployment in the UK at 21 per cent - and here in Spain at 56 per cent - I just don’t get why anyone should feel ‘humiliated.’ So job applicants, get real! Apologies for ranting a bit but it really gets my goat when people claiming to be desperate for work moan about being tested at interview. It’s like taxi drivers who moan about being in traffic. Anyway, rant over. Off to take another look at The Office - and that robot-dancing… Nora Johnson’s thrillers ‘Retribution’, ‘Soul Stealer’, ‘The De Clerambault Code’ (www.nora-johnson.com) from Amazon in paperback/eBook (€0.89;£0.77) and iBookstore. UNVEILING: There are more than 1,000 stand s.

Spotlight turns on Frankfurt THE 65th Frankfurt Motor Show is being held until September 22. The international exhibition could not come at a better moment for the Spanish industry, which recently ousted Russia from 11th place in the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers ranking. The Spanish car industry registered a profit of €6.3 billion during the first half of the year, according to the Spanish Car and Lorry Manufacturers Association (Anfac).

In Spain 210,581 cars were manufactured in July, an increase of 15.36 per cent in relation to 2012 said Anfac.

Many of these cars, including the Ford S-Max soon to be produced in Valencia, are being presented at the Frankfurt

Motor Show. The show gathers all the segments of the car industry together on a 230,000 m2 site and more

than 1,000 stands. Two themes are being highlighted at the show; electric cars and so-called car connectivity, that is

James Bond submarine car sold for €643,500 A SUBMARINE car used by James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me has been auctioned in London for £550,000 (€643,500). The Lotus Esprit, also known as Wet Nellie, was used in an underwater scene in which agent 007, played by Roger

Moore, escapes with Russian spy Ana Amasova, actress Barbara Bach. Although the auctioned vehicle cannot be driven on the road, it is said to be fully functional underwater. The car was bought by a telephone bidder for £550,000

(€643,500), a lower figure than the initially estimated price of between £650,000 and £950,000 (€760,000 and €1,111,500). Classic car auction company RM Auctions representative Peter Haynes claimed to be very happy.

technology that aims at connecting the driver with the car and the environment. German manufacturers will unveil 16 electric cars, with many more produced by Chinese, French, British, Japanese and American manufacturers. This is proof that this technology has ceased to be just a concept but has become a reality, according to the organising German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA). Car connectivity is being planned to change the driving and safety of cars, with technology capable of assisting the driver in the most dangerous situations. Experts claim 210 million of these ‘connected cars’ will be on the roads in 2016, four times more than today.

Mazarron off to a flying start EMF Fuente Alamo 1 Mazarron FC 2 MAZARRON’S season got off to a flying start with a 2-1 away victory at local rivals EMF Fuente Alamo. On a hard, sandy playing surface, it was never going to be an attractive game to watch but Mazarron produced a hardworking performance and deservedly took the three points. Mazarron started the game brightly with newcomers Tico and Moha impressive in midfield but chances were hard to come by on the difficult surface. Alcaraz headed an Alfonso corner over the bar and Juanillo hit a rasping drive from 15 yards that was turned away by the Fuente keeper. Then Cecilio made a surging run forward but his shot from 25 yards was again well saved. Fuente Alamo had shown little up front but took the lead after 30 minutes when they were awarded a penalty following a handball in the Mazarron box. Garcia sent Ruben the wrong way with the

HARD TO WATCH: But Mazarron took the three points. spot kick to give the home team an undeserved lead at half time. Victor replaced Juanillo at the interval allowing Alfonso to push forward in a more attacking role and Mazarron equalised after 54 minutes.

Alicante trip for Fairwayz TWENTY-SIX players from Fairwayz Golf Society turned out for a day at Alicante Golf course on September 12. We played individual Stableford competition and had a ‘Guess the number of lost balls’ prize In the Gold Category first was Peter Jones (33) followed by Steve Ashurst (32). Best front nine was by Steve Lawrence 17pts and best back by Geoff Branton 17pts. Nearest the pin was Gerry Williams and nearest the pin in three was Steve Ashurst. In the Silver Category Tony Macmillan (34) was first, with second Paul Smith (27). Best front nine was by Stuart Taylor 15pts and best back Bill Howie 13pts. Nearest the pin was Tony Macmillan.

Moha made a surging run down the right and, despite being clearly fouled, managed

to put in an excellent cross which was expertly turned home at the near post by last

year’s leading marksman, Jose Ruben. Mazarron were in total control of the game and took the lead after 62 minutes when Alfonso’s right wing cross struck a Fuente defender on the arm and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Alfonso himself took the kick and blasted the ball into the roof of the net. It could have been 3-1 after 74 minutes after excellent work by Pescao and Cecilio saw Tico hitting a powerful drive which was just turned over the crossbar by the Fuente keeper. Ruben in the Mazarron goal had a fairly quiet game but dealt well with some difficult crosses and made a good save from a rare Fuente breakaway in the latter stages. A rare mistake by Alcaraz in the dying minutes almost let in a Fuente striker but he blazed his shot well over the crossbar with only Ruben to beat. Overall it was an excellent display by Mazaron which augurs well for the rest of the season.

Opening day win for CD Montesinos AFTER several player departures and arrivals it was back to normal for CD Montesinos as they kicked off at Benijofar. A crowd of more than 300 reportedly attended the first game of the season. The first scoring opportunity went to Diego whose header from Fernando’s free kick went just wide. Montes number 10 Edu was causing the Benijofar defence problems with his pace and it was his cross that gave Monte the lead by virtue of an own goal. The midfield battle in

the first half created little chances for either side. The second half was better for chances and Montes keeper Christian made some excellent saves, but despite this and their opponents being down to 10 men, Monte was still being penned back. The last 10 mins saw wasted chances, but all in all a good solid performance by Monte who are gelling as a team nicely. The final score was CD Montesinos 1 0 Benijofar. Organisers state that next week’s game will be held at home to ALMORADI B and kick-off is at 5pm. For more information see the website cdmontesinos.com or email thefullmonte2011@ hotmail.com.

GOLD CATEGORY: (From left) Liam Foley, Merv Williams and Malcolm Anderson.

Rockets are back home IT was back to their home of Vistabella for Rocket’s GS. In the Silver Category Arthur Williams (39) took first with Ron Chambers (36) second, Mick Hithersay (33) third and Ron Nicholson (25) fourth. Nearest the pins were Malcolm Anderson, Ken Lindsay and Ron Chambers. It is the start of the Vega Baja Premier Golf League on tomorrow (Friday) at Altorreal Golf, Molinas de Segura - Rockets are playing La Manga North from the 10th
