53 families homeless TOURISM HOPE: Palma to be a year-round hub for all kinds of visitors.

€6m project set to boost Palma’s trade PALMA City Council officials have announced the creation of a new €6 million project which aims to turn Mallorca’s capital into a year-round hub for all kinds of travellers. Another proposal within the plan is to super-charge

commerce by keeping shops open on Sundays all year round, taking advantage of short-term tourists coming over for city breaks as well as cruise-ship passengers. The council recognises that tourism is the

preferred path towards job creation and economic revitalisation. The project entitled ‘Palma de Mallorca Tourism Foundation 365’ was presented at the recent FITUR tourism fair in Madrid.

SINCE January, 53 homeowners have been evicted in Palma along with 38 tenants, according to figures from the Balearic Justice Department.

Rubbish tariffs not set to fall THE prospect of rubbish tariffs in Mallorca being cut seems bleak. The local governing People’s Party (PP) sought to decrease tariffs by 2014, but Mallorca’s government has temporarily frozen the month-old agreement to import waste from mainland Spain in order to incinerate it here. The stalled project stems from a viability report carried out this month wherein 1,086 tonnes of waste was shipped in from Sabadell, Cataluña and which had been set to receive a total of 40,000 tonnes over a year’s time. Initial figures said fee reduction was predicated for Mallorca importing between 100,000 and 200,000 tonnes in order to make a reduction in tariffs feasible. Environment Councillor Catalina Soler was asked at a Press conference about the future of municipal waste tariffs, and said: “They can go up or down, no one can say, we will continue to work towards lowering prices.” As a result of this latest development, calls from opposition party coalition More for Mallorca (MES) are being made

Wetlands to be a mall HEAD of Urban Planning Jesus Valls has announced a plan to convert Palma’s last remaining wetlands into a macro shopping and tourist complex. In a Palma Town Hall press conference, Valls explained that they intend to utilise a 75,400m2 area in Ses Fontanelles to build 23 two-storey structures and parking for up to 2,500 vehicles.

One third of the 320,000m2 that make up Ses Fontanelles will be utilised including a 225,000m2 green zone with 100,000m2 dedicated to botanical and urban gardens with walkways for hiking. The project, complete with pedestrianised zones resembling Festival Park, Marratxi, was furnished with a preliminary licence to start construction for

which Palma Town Hall can expect to receive €6 million. The GOB, Mallorca’s biggest association of environmental protectionists, has filed a legal complaint signalling that there are serious irregularities surrounding the plan. Earlier this month several local ecological NGOs staged a protest in the form of a family bike ride in order to draw attention to the issue.

Twelve hurt in bus crash

TWELVE people were injured when a bus veered off the road and crashed near the Can Penasso Restaurant in Bunyola. It was around 2:30pm last Sunday when the driver of the TIB public transport bus on the Soller-Palma line apparently suffered a heart attack causing him to lose control, swerve off the road and slam into a stone wall. According to the Guardia Civil, the impact was such that three of the passengers flew out of the windows and landed in the garden of a home owned by a well-known athlete. At the time of going to press the driver, aged 45, was still in intensive care.

Dry dock launch SA RAPITA YACHT CLUB in the municipality of Campos, has announced that come April 1 it will open a new €300,000 dry dock able to accommodate up to 60 boats at a time. Sa Rapita’s 40-year-old Club Náutico will foot the bill and members are confident the investment will pay for itself due to the high demand for maintenance and winterisation. The port of Sa Rapita is very busy as it is just 12 miles from the island of Cabrera. The new dry dock will be 60 metres long.

General Tourism Law passed last July by parliament to get final approval. The bungalows will sit on 60 hectares of land that was supposed to be the site of a golf course during the 1980’s. The golf plans died in 1991 when the land was re-categorised and subsequently protected. According to the project, the new Club Vacacional de as Canova will be working under a strict premise of absolute respect for the environment and stipulates that all structures are to be built out of wood and glass and be elevated on wooden pylons so as to harmonise with the natural surroundings. Outside the complex there will be a 350 car park but there will also be regular minibus transport for holiday makers.

Jobs boost as promise kept TELEFONICA created 5,000 direct and indirect jobs in Spain last year. “At a time when backing Spain looked complicated, that is what we have done,” said Telefonica president Luis Miguel Gilperez. The multinational provided direct employment for 450 people in 2012 as well as work experience for 555 interns through its Talentum programme. The majority will ‘probably’ join the company when their probationary period was over, Gilperez said. Regarding indirect jobs, a call centre that recently opened in Las Palmas would provide employment for approximately 2,000

people over the next two years, the president added. Another 4,000 jobs have been generated by Telefonica’s fibre-optic network. The company has taken to heart criticism from users, and intends to reduce outsourcing, Gilperez said. At present, 50 per cent of calls to Telefonica’s customer care centres are answered in Spain. By the end of this year, this should have increased to 100 per cent. Gilperez defended the 2011-2013 redundancy plan for 6,500 Telefonica workers. This had helped the company to increase efficiency, he insisted.

2012. Average price increases of 1.2 per cent were responsible for the apparent anomaly. Packaged food and fresh products were respectively responsible for 41 and 34 per cent of family spending in 2012, Nielsen found. CLEAN-UP: Cleaning products account for 14 per cent of family spending.

‘Tithe’ keeps church tills filled THE Catholic Church in Spain was once notoriously rich and still manages to get by. Every Spanish income tax declaration has a box that taxpayers tick if they wish 0.7 per cent of their taxes to go to the Church. Although 78.5 per cent of the Spanish say they are Catholics, only 33.4 per cent of them tick that particular box.

This donation was originally 0.5 per cent but was increased in 2006 by the Zapatero government. In return the Church relinquished its annual allocation from the state budget. Years back, the Church announced its intention of becoming selfsufficient but made little progress. For this to be feasible every Catholic in the land would need to pay 50 cents each time they went to Mass.

Still confused about driving licence medical certificate Q: I AM hoping that you can explain exactly what David Searl meant in his column two weeks ago regarding the medical certificate for driving licences. We have read his answer several times and it You and the remains a puzzle. We have had our medicals Law in Spain By David Searl and carry them with our UK driving licences but David Searl says confusion arises because the certificate says it is valid for three months. We cannot find this anywhere on our certificates. The most worrying thing is that he said if one does not apply for a licence or a renewal within three months, then you may have to get a new certificate. As our driving licences have not expired we have not either applied or renewed them so we really do not understand. Perhaps there is something we have not done. We do not want to change to a Spanish driving licence but is David Searl saying we now need to do this? LM (Costa Blanca) A: No, you do not need to change your UK licence until it expires. Then you must change it for a Spanish licence as you cannot renew your UK licence because you are not resident in the UK. 1. Your medical certificate you carry with your UK licence does not expire in three months. It is valid for 10 years. Unless you are over 70 years of age, in which case it is valid for only two years. 2. Now, if, and only if, you are applying for a Spanish driving licence, or the renewal of one, then the medical certificate is only good for three months. That is, if you do not complete your application within three months, you must obtain a new certificate. 3. It does not matter whether your certificate states it is valid for three months or not. All such documents are valid for only three months, as noted in paragraph 2 above. I hope this helps to clarify the situation. Industrial base is absolutely essential for Spanish hopes READERS might recall that in a previous article I set out the idea that, to have a stable and successful future, Spain had to forget the old times of property bubbles and floods of tourists. Instead it should concentrate upon establishing an industrial bedrock to underpin the economy, a manufacturing base to develop, not only full employment, but also a profitmaking ethic capable of financing it. The present level of unemployment in Spain, particularly with that for young people (under 25s) running at more than 51 per cent, should be seen for what it is: the result of successive governments, both Socialist and Conservative, having focused only upon day-today topics leading up to the next election. Problems have been left to fester until they have become almost incurable ulcers in the body politic. This laissez-faire attitude has proven itself to be dangerous, and once confronted and overcome – which must be the case if Spain is to have a viable future – should never be allowed to show its face again. Spain must break away from the old, seductive comfort zones. They have gone; the damage has been done, and future governments must ensure that such short-sighted cupidity never again infests the national mind. Let us imagine for a moment what Spain might come to if nothing is done to correct past mistakes. It is doubtful that the

BAD IDEA: Mechanised megafarms not good news for Spaniards.

‘property bubble’ would ever be re-inflated, not for a very long time anyway, seeing that just about every square metre of the Mediterranean coastline already lies beneath bricks, mortar and concrete. But suppose some powerful group of international financiers should look upon Spain with a different money-making plan in mind? Instead of apartment blocks and villas, what if they saw the potential for vast profit if the

present co-operatives and privately-owned farms and smallholdings, stretching from Cataluña, through Valencia, Murcia, Castilla la Mancha, into Andalucia and Extremadura, were bought up and turned into huge farming factories? Highly mechanised and with their own transport and storage facilities they might have their own shops and supermarkets, operating throughout Europe and spreading the gospel of low prices. Sounds good, eh? But such vast tracts, planned to maximise profits, would require far fewer people. The others? Well, what would a few more added to the roll of the unemployed matter? Then Spain really would become that which I forecast earlier, that is the food-producing reservoir of low-paid, unskilled labour that highly-developed industrial groups have always required. You think I’m seeing the world, not through rose-tinted glasses but through cobwebs? Well, it has happened in the past, and will again. It occurred in Great Britain as the 19th century Industrial Revolution gathered pace, and in Germany a few years later. The commercial rivalry between these two great powers was the true fuse that set off the conflagration of the Second World War and brought the United States of America into the equation. Now, while 21st century China and India endure their own industrial revolutions, the world teeters.

www.euroweeklynews.com You will soon be able to file your first declaration under Spain’s new overseas asset reporting law. While the deadline is 30th April, forms can be submitted anytime in March and April. The official form, Modelo 720, is now available and will need to be submitted online. This year you need to declare your assets as at 31st December 2012, where the value of the assets in each of the three listed categories amount to over €50,000. The Spanish tax authority, the Hacienda, has now published a list of Q&As and since Euro Weekly News readers will find them useful I have paraphrased some of the key points of interest below. There are a number of other aspects which I could not cover here, and you will probably have more queries yourself on what you need to report and how. Looking ahead, this is the time to review if your assets are in the right place to be as tax efficient as possible. You could be paying more tax than you need to. Ask an expert advisory firm like Blevins Franks to review your current arrangements and discuss the tax efficient vehicles available in Spain. This is a specialised area, and you do need professional advice to make sure you avoid any of the consequences of getting it wrong. If an overseas bank has joint or multiple owners, does it still need to be reported?

Asset Reporting Obligations – Q&As by Bill Blevins, Financia l Correspondent, Blevins Franks

The obligation to report exists where the balance of the account is over €50,000 regardless of how many account holders there are. Each account holder should declare the total balance (not pro-rated), indicating the percentage they hold. If, for example, an individual ceases to be the account holder in June 2012, is there an obligation to make the declaration? Yes, if the balance on that date is over €50,000 (when combined with other overseas accounts). Full details need to be given about the account, the bank it was held with, and the balance on the date the individual ceased to be the account holder. Do overseas pension plans need to be declared? There is no obligation to provide

information on pension plans situated overseas provided that they do not give rise to a temporary or lifetime annuity. Where there is an annuity, the capitalised value, as calculated for wealth tax purposes, should be declared. If an individual moves overseas once the tax year has started and he has to file an income tax declaration as a resident for this period, does he need to file a reporting Form? Yes, provided that the conditions for reporting are met. If a property is acquired as a gift or an inheritance, what acquisition value needs to be declared? The real value of the asset at the time of its original acquisition. Where an account is held in a different currency, what is the exchange rate that should be used? The exchange rate should be that in force at 31st December each year. The same rate should be used for valuing the average balance of the last quarter. If the account was closed during the year, you should use the exchange rate at the date of closure.

In relation to assets declared on Form 720, in the event that they relate to undeclared income, can this be regularised? If the asset was purchased with undeclared income, this can be regularised under the normal regularisation procedures. What are the penalties for failing to report: a) One overseas account, two other movable assets, and three immovable properties? The minimum penalty for failing to file a Form 720 in this example (where all three categories should have been reported) will be €30,000. b) Assets in just one category? Where only one category of information should have been reported, the minimum penalty is €10,000. Note that this last question just covers the fines for failing to make a report; there are more consequences. Any undeclared income will be deemed to arise in the last tax year that is not statute barred, so the Hacienda can look back indefinitely to review unpaid

tax. It will charge income tax on any undeclared income, plus late payment interest, plus penalties as high as 150% of the total tax due on the asset. It is possible that the total amount is more than the value of the asset. While you should use an accountant for help filling in your form, for peace of mind about your overall tax planning you should speak to a tax planning and wealth management firm like Blevins Franks who are Spanish tax experts. With its in depth understanding of Spanish taxation and law, Blevins Franks will advise you on what you need to include in the form and at the same time guide you through the opportunities to legitimately lower your tax liabilities in Spain on your offshore assets. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual should take personalised advice. MENU FOR SUCCESS : Many Spaniards are opening their own businesses.

Create your own job SPANIARDS are becoming their own bosses in an effort to escape the economic crisis. Between 2008 and 2011 more than 625,000 self-employed had to give up, according to government figures. But last year, as the unemployment rate climbed above 26 per cent, 53,000 newly registered

self-employed made their numbers rise rather than fall for the first time since 2008. These entrepreneurs created 72,000 jobs, said Lorenzo Amor, President of the small entrepreneurs’ association ATA. “For the next few months it is going to be easier to create your own job than to find one,” Amor said. He added that in Spain 67 people an hour register as self-employed. But in these tough times it is hard to keep a new business going. THE number of people who used planes to travel Just half of new within Spain fell by 12.5 per cent in 2012, while train businesses are still passengers fell by 2 per cent, according to the running after three National Institute of Statistics. years.

The death of the teenage odd job means a shock in the real world AS a kid, my brother had a paper round from the age of 11. I used to babysit for neighbours from the age of 14. My friend packed bags at the cashier of a local supermarket at the age of 16, while nearly every friend I have worked parttime in a café or restaurant during their college years to make a few extra quid. In our home, apart from keeping our bedrooms clean, my brother’s job was to load A look and empty the at finance dishwasher, while I was for females the queen of ironing, which I enjoyed because Jane Plunkett it’s a job where you can jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews. watch TV at the same com time. That’s why it always surprises me how little many Spanish kids do around the house, or how unaccustomed they are to dreaming up small jobs in their neighbourhood that could enable WORK: Odd jobs to make money. them to earn a few euros. Just last week, I was speaking to a group of together to spend at the weekends?” I asked. teens about pocket money and odd jobs. “So “Que?” was the unanimous reply from blank and what do you have to do to get a bit of money confused young faces.

From the looks of things, the concept of working doesn’t enter their minds until they finish studying and start looking for a job. Having surveyed five separate classes of Spanish kids between the ages of 10 and 17, regardless of receiving pocket money each week, about 80 per cent do not have to do any small chore in their homes in return. The girls among the classes definitely admitted to doing more jobs around the home, but the boys blatantly confessed that ‘mama’ didn’t ask anything of them in exchange for their pocket money. Earning a bit of money as a kid is an important start to lessons in finance and managing money. If a child thinks money just appears on a silver plate for doing nothing, it’s some shock they are going to get when they enter the real world. Kids need to dream up silly jobs to earn some money. Even if it’s picking flowers from gardens, mixing the petals with water and selling it door to door as perfume. This is the start of entrepreneurialism and creative thinking that could make a person rich in the future. A child that doesn’t begin to understand the value of money early in life is in for a tough lesson on dealing with finances in the future.

Mystery shoppers shop Santander SPANISH banking giant Santander’s UK division is suspected of providing clients with flawed investment advice, according to internet rumours. The UK’s Financial Services Authority (FSA) has ordered an in-depth investigation of Santander UK, claim industry sources. Between March and September last year, ‘mystery shoppers’ from the FSA paid 1,231 visits to six banks and building societies, posing as potential customers. “A major high street bank” was referred to its enforcement division, the FSA announced. It could face a fine or licence changes preventing it from providing these services in future. But as yet the FSA has refused to reveal which bank is involved. Santander

There were concerns that employees would be unable to meet new FSA rules arising from its Retail Distribution Review (RDR) introduced at the end of 2012.

SPAIN exported 75,000 tons of garlic worth €130 million in 2012. The average price per kilo last year fell to €1.80, compared with €2.40 in 2011.

Less beauty TURNOVER for Spain’s 78,000 hairdressers and 11,000 beauty salons fell by 7.5 per cent last year. While some independent establishments struggle, chains continued to increase their share of the market.

Time to learn a lesson in honest politics I’VE lost track of the corruption cases involving Spanish politicians or other public servants. The worst is that the average Spaniard on the street is now so used to it that they almost automatically accept their daily dose of political scandal with resignation. The word ‘transparency’ recently coined by Barack Obama enjoyed a certain amount of popularity here until Spain’s voters discovered that their political representatives were economical with the truth. So much so that the word transparency might as well be eliminated from the Spanish dictionary. It would be worthy of a Marx Brothers’ movie if it were not so tragic. I humbly but urgently suggest that Spain’s politicians take an example from Obama’s honesty before its irate voters abandon the polling stations like rats from a sinking ship. Richard M McBride, Benidorm (Alicante)

Quiet anticipation I RELISH the opportunity for quiet discourse and relaxation in public bars that the rumoured upcoming disappearance of British television from Spain will bring. The chance to enjoy a quiet drink without having to yield to the almost daily onslaught of football fanatics who are generally capable of volubly expressing ‘qualified’ opinions; the inane audible hum of analysis of soap operas; the discussion of vapid televised talent. Karl Marx may now be inclined to state that ‘Vacuous televised entertainment is the opium of the people.’ British televisions’ entertainment output is as appalling as that of Central and South America and even ranks lower than that of Nigeria and Tanzania given, at least, that the latter output is made more amusing by the introduction of witchcraft. imprisonment. The same thing happens here. Take the case of Jose Maria Zaragoza Berenguer, a popular garage owner from Polop, who for the last 16 months has been languishing in Fontcalent Prison (Alicante). The reason for his unjust imprisonment is that in 2011 his garage assistant allegedly killed two people. Yet Jose Maria, although innocent, has not been liberated. This is obviously an injustice that should be corrected ASAP. We are not in the Gulag Archipeligo. Name supplied, Polop (Alicante)

Weevil solution THERE is a simple, safe and cheap preventative measure against red palm weevils which has been tried with some success in Castellon. It’s to spray a diluted mixture of turpentine (aguaras) on the fronds, top centre and at the base of plants

likely to get infected. The weevil is killing palms, and the black version, agaves, yuccas and aloes. This application doesn’t cure infected plants, it apparently keeps the bugs away because they hate the odour. The turps should be diluted about one part to five of warm water. How often the spray should be used I don’t know. Probably every month or so or after heavy rain. Chuck (by email)

SINCE the no smoking in public places law was introduced, there has been a dramatic increase of terrace coverings, with gas heaters and in some cases a door fitted to enter the premises. This covers entirely all tables and chairs placed outside some restaurants and cafés. This forces the non-smoker to go inside. Is this area classified as inside or as an outside smoking area? Don Ralph, Benijofa (Alicante)r Editor’s note: Terraces where smoking is permitted should have a minimum of two sides open under Spanish Law.

Water expense

Gas trouble

THERE are lots of advertisements on TV asking for donations for the African children as they cannot drink the water. I have lived in El Galan for 10 years and during that time I have spent thousands of euros on bottled water as the tapwater was unfit to drink. Will anyone send me money to compensate for all those years as I am only a hard-up pensioner? Deirdre Drayton, San Miguel de Salinas (Alicante)

WE received a visit from two alleged gas inspectors. They insisted that they had right of access and if we refused then we would be denounced and face a €2,000 fine. They were told to depart and off they went with many glowers and muttered threats. A few days later, we heard gravel crunching and the sounds of conversation. There was a loud bang and on reaching the lounge we found a piece of firewood protruding into the room between the door and frame. My wife shouted, and we heard footsteps running. By the time we got out of the cottage there was nothing to be seen except slashed fly screens front and rear. We called the police who were with us in 15 minutes. Excellent service. initiatives at all to prevent Britain’s core of rottenness and indecision expanding unchecked, until it totally engulfs the once beautiful country so many of our forefathers fought and died for. Sorry, Dad! My piece on the alleged cache of weapons stored under Buckingham Palace caused quite a stir last week. One gentleman, who didn’t want his name published as he is still bound by the Official Secrets Act, assured me there are actually no weapons stored directly under the palace. He suggests my friend was probably in the basement of Wellington Barracks, some 500 metres away. Thank you, sir, for that information. It did strike me, though, that if a cache of weaponry and explosives of that magnitude is not exactly under the palace, at only 500 metres from the royal abode, it may as well be! Ignorance was bliss but meat scandal makes me think harder

I

HAVE just had a conversation with my husband that I don’t think either of us thought we would ever have. We have just discussed, in detail, the contents of burgers of two well known fast food places (I feel calling them “restaurants” just a little far fetched) and praised both of the businesses for seemingly getting through the horsemeat hoo hah unscathed, so far. We did deviate into an argument thinly disguised as a debate about how these burgers were cooked, as he did seem to know a lot about this. Looks like he may have been doing some research, all in the name of science, of course. When I was a kid, indeed for the entirety of my childhood, I was obsessed with horses. Like many girls I was mad about ponies. I worried myself the other day by considering the

fact that I have probably eaten horsemeat, and just not really cared. It turns out that I don’t think you should mind eating horse any more than I mind eating any other animal, in my opinion it’s no worse than eating dog, or cat, or cow, or chicken. If you eat one, then why not the other? My choices come down to squeamishness or how it tastes. I have knowingly eaten ostrich in Sydney, Australia and donkey in Verona, Italy (it’s the local meat, it’s in everything) but I couldn’t bring myself to try chicken’s feet in Taipei, Taiwan (too bony), or octopus in Mallorca, Spain (too,

TV DINNERS: The recent scandal has forced us to think about what we are eating. just too everything, yak!). What I do object to is the meat industry’s deception of its customers. It didn’t occur to me that perhaps it wasn’t what it said it would be on the tin. Silly Vicki, what a chump. Ignorance was bliss though, ooh, how much do I love a banger, and what about my husband’s ‘Boy

Chocolate’ as he calls it (chunks of salami), and how useful to have a couple of ready meal lasagnes lurking in the freezer for those moments when I don’t have the time to cook. Wonderful. But sadly, these days are now no more. It’s been a wake-up call for a lot of people I think. Reports have

said that the sale of horsemeat has gone up, great news, eat what you like as long as you know what you are eating and you have made an informed choice. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank the abattoirs who managed to mix up (deliberately or not) horse and cow meats, because it has finally pushed me into seriously thinking about what I eat and what my family eats. I now have a definite leaning towards more and more vegetarian and even vegan (I know, sounds extreme, but in reality quite delicious) cooking. There are side effects to this: lowering cholesterol, reducing the cost of the shopping bill, but most notably, increasing the amount of farting competitions my daughter and husband can have with each other. There’s an upside to everything if you look hard enough.

Taxing times as authorities seek to know about every last cent…

RE you sitting comfortably? Taken the daily Valium? Good, then I will begin.

Life for us expats in Spain, it seems, is about to become a whole lot more complicated and perilous within the next couple of months. If you’ve been reading the financial comments here in the Euro Weekly News or recent emails from your diligent tax advisor you know what I am talking about. In case you have been on the moon or in denial, let me sum it up in a simple, nonfinancial advisor sort of way: before the end of April you have to tot up all your savings, flats, houses or shares you happen to own outside of Spain and jot them all down online on the relevant parts of the Tax Agency Form 720. Because this government wants a cut. Sounds easy enough? Think again… because if you missed something - maybe the inheritance from dear Aunty Ethel - you will have to pay 150 per cent of what you failed to declare as a fine. And yes, that means you will have to give away the whole inheritance plus half again from some other pocket to clear the ‘multa’, a

Spanish word we risk becoming all too familiar with. Oh and remember when you followed the UK government advice and invested in tax-free Personal Equity Plans or Individual Savings Accounts back in Blighty? You have to declare those, too, because here in Spain they are taxed. And although it is not strictly related, never give any money to your spouse, because that too could be taxed at 7 per cent. In fact, there are very few parts of life that are not taxing. Of course, taxes are a necessary evil and we do live in this country so it is only fair that we pull our weight. It’s just that these latest measures seem a tad Draconian. The new law is not intended to target expats specifically, rather the wealthy

WISE WORDS: Nothing in life is certain except death and taxes. Spaniards who have tucked away nest eggs in distant tax havens. But since many expats still have a property or a savings account outside Spain, we are the ones who have to be particularly careful, especially since we’re unlikely to enlist the top tax gurus to guide us. Mistakes can be more than costly, they can be ruinous, so it may be worth seeking advice after all.

Unemployment may well run at 26 per cent but at the tax advisors’ they’re working around the clock, it’s a real bonanza year for this lot. In fact, with the swings and roundabouts in this sector, every year is a good year. Benjamin Franklin was spot on when he said that nothing in life is certain except death and taxes.

Japan’s ‘dirty’ dinners ONE Japanese restaurant is spearheading a new filthy food fad as it launches a menu of dishes cooked with dirt. Ne Quittez Pas restaurant in Tokyo’s Gotanda district uses eco-friendly compost made from coffee grounds and palm fibre which is safe for human consumption. The menu includes potato starch and dirt soup, dirt risotto and sautéed sea bass, and for dessert there’s dirt ice cream and dirt mint tea. Sampling this dirty menu is not cheap and you’ll have to fork out around €81 and make a reservation at least a week in advance.

Mould-free future to extend life for food RESEARCHERS have developed a technology that stops bread from going mouldy without the use of preservatives. The new MicroZap technology, produced at Texas Tech University in the US, has been made with the aim to reduce outbreaks of food-borne illnesses by sterilising and extending the shelf-life of different food. And the university claims it does not affect the bread’s taste. Along with bread, food including turkey, herbs and jalapeño peppers was also tested. The bread treated with the MicroZap technology showed no mould growth up to 60 days after being tested, providing the evidence that the bread

The company is also promoting it as a way to eliminate the drugresistant MRSA virus, which has become a major problem in hospitals worldwide.

Sweet trends return CAKE was once considered a luxury treat but now it is much more affordable and more common. During the 1960s, cheap and simple cakes were made as part of afternoon tea but expensive cakes like chocolate were a rarity. Today, we see cake reaching new levels of popularity. The cupcake has become a fashionable phenomenon in the cake industry, with trends in unusual combinations in flavours and styles becoming hugely popular. Cupcake bakeries and shops can be found worldwide as the fashionable delicacy continues to grow in popularity.

Benefits of tomato juice MUSCLE BOOST: Taking tomato juice after exercise speeds up INSTEAD of reaching for energy drinks after a workout, try tomato juice. Research suggests it could be better than energy drinks at helping the body recover from exercise. Experts say tomatoes have vital chemicals that can help muscles recover and blood levels return to normal after being stretched and strained.

Health institutions in Greece spent two months carrying out tests on 15 athletes. They looked at vital signs before, during and after exercise. Nine of the athletes drank tomato juice after exercise and six consumed their regular energy drink. The results showed that those drinking tomato juice had quicker levels of muscle recovery and their glucose levels returned to normal faster after

T is 32 years on Saturday - when democracy was just two years old in the new Spanish constitution since a civil guard coup attempt failed in Madrid. On February 23, 1981, Spanish television viewers were treated to a few minutes of high drama. As 220 heavily armed civil guards took control of the Cortes (parliament) in Madrid their leader, Lt-Colonel Antonio Tejero made his way to the central parliamentary chamber and, waving his pistol in the air, informed the deputies that their “ineffectual” services to the country were no longer required. But most of the army sided with the King. Civil Guard units were stood down; the people demanded an end to the madness, and in all the coup bid lasted just eight hours. And what of Tejero? He is the most remembered of the conspirators, mainly because unlike many conspirators who distanced themselves from the plot, he remained true to the objective,

Now approaching 80 and living a sedate lifestyle, he enjoys painting and strolling. One wonders if, between brush strokes or during tranquil strolls, he contemplates his actions of 32 years ago when he stormed into the parliamentary chamber to ‘save Spain from terrorism’. It appears so far, through a more peaceful parliamentary process, that Spain is saving itself.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20) So far as your work or business life is concerned, those in authority may seek to see things done their way. Where they seem to pay lip service to your needs, that is all it is…talk. Be clear that you want action and that you will not give in easily. Humour will not help. ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Putting yourself first is necessary at the moment. There is so much happening this week that you may be tempted to run yourself ragged trying to do it all yourself. It is possible to persuade others to give a hand and, although it may seem too much trouble at the time, you will reap the benefits in the longer term. TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) You should bear in mind that you are the best one to decide what you want, when you want it and how you will go about getting it. Others may offer you short cuts, but is that really going to deliver the goods? I think not. GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) You know where you are going and who with, but there is this one unresolved thought in your mind. It is just a thought, isn't it? Or is it more? This is something only you can answer. Be prepared this week to take advice and ask questions. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You are still looking more to the past than to the future, but now it seems that circumstances are urging you to move ahead at more of a pace. Because the matter becomes urgent, it may seem to you that circumstances are overtaking you. The choice is still yours if you show speed and determination. LEO (July 24 - August 23) What you truly want in life is now becoming clear to you. Not for you the fuzzy ideas of the past. Now, you realise that, if you do

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) With your self-confidence on a high note, you are ready to sing the song of your future. There will be highs and lows but that is what makes life interesting and exciting. Do not now avoid changes for the sake of peace. What is exciting and balanced this week is where your future lies. As former soccer star and alcoholic Paul Gascoigne undergoes rehab in the US, England footballers and the FA have paid €48,000 towards treatment, also

being financed by Piers Morgan and friends. Could this money perhaps be better spent? EWN newsdesk reports.

Gascoigne’s alcohol rehab cash wasted or well spent?

OSE LUIS GONZALEZ, a 56-year-old salesman from Madrid visiting family in Altea thinks it’s a waste of money to pay for more rehab, but also considers footballers can afford it. “Since footballers are so ridiculously overpaid they’re not likely to miss the money, are they?” he said. Spanish resident Sito Fabrega Navarro who is the president of Albox Football Club, said: “Footballers can spend their money where they like. If they want to drink themselves to death it’s their choice.” Recently retired Oria resident Wilhelmina Rice said: “George Best was given a new liver and it didn’t stop him. These footballers should be like Alan Sugar and give their money to Great Ormond St Children’s Hospital.” Roger Davies, a retired mechanic from Benalmadena was surprised to hear the news. “Where is his family when he needs help? Maybe they have given up on him after all these years of abusing himself.” Meanwhile Tony Quintero from La Marina felt that Paul Gascoigne has made enough money over the years to pay for his own rehab. “It would be nice to

know a few famous people who would be willing to pay for their mistakes.” He added: “I do hope he gets sorted out, but I think the money could have been better spent going to charity.” Alicia Pico, a student at Alicante University, had never heard of Paul Gascoigne. Once the Euro Weekly News briefed her on the troubled footballer’s career and his failed attempts at rehabilitation, Alicia felt compassion towards him. “Everyone deserves a second chance,” she said. But Terry Matthews a resident of La Marina feels Gascoigne should pay for his own rehabilitation. “He should take responsibility and sort himself out, it is not down to anyone else.” Fuengirola resident Simon Canales believes there is no hope left for Gascoigne. “After hearing that he was drinking two litres of gin every day and his massive drug binges, I don’t think he can ever recover mentally or physically.” PAUL GASCOIGNE: Undergoing rehab.

Cut the apron strings UNIVERSITY students with over-controlling parents are more likely to be depressed. That’s the claim by the University of Mary Washington, Virginia, (USA) which conducted an online survey of 297 American students aged between 18-23. Their study said that so-called ‘helicopter parenting’ affected students in a negative way making them feel less competent and increasing their levels of depression and their dissatisfaction with life.

SLIM DOWN HIGH UP: It is believed that living at a higher altitude can help lose a few pounds.

Living higher up can help you slim down IF you want to slim down, you may want to move inland to the Spanish mountains as it is believed that living at a higher altitude can help lose a few pounds. Researchers found that Americans who lived well above sea level were less likely to be obese than those in low-lying areas. The study assessed data from 400,000 people living in Colorado (USA) with the figures showing that

a person’s obesity risk dropped with every 660 feet increase in elevation. Other factors that could influence the results were also taken into account, like retirement age. The researchers found that adults living at the lowest altitudes had a Body Mass Index (BMI), which measures weight in relation to height, of 26.6. Those living in a higher altitude range had a BMI of 24.2.

Music lessons can make children smarter CHILDREN who learn to play a musical instrument at a young age could be smarter in later life. Research shows that there is a special window of learning in a child's brain between the ages of six and eight, when musical training boosts the development of the motor skills regions of the brain. Concordia University in Montreal (Canada) carried out a study on the brains of 36 musicians, all of whom had played for around the same number of years. They were split into two groups, those who started playing music before the age of seven and those who started at a later stage in life and then they were monitored as they carried out nonmusical tests of their motor skills.

Grow your own plants and save yourself money T HE self growing or propagation of plants is an economic way of producing new plants and can be an interesting and fascinating hobby. Luckily the warmer Spanish climate makes some propagation easier than in Northern Europe and in many areas without the need of a greenhouse. Much of our garden was planted from our own plants raised from cuttings or seeds from our own or a friend’s garden. The cost of buying each plant from a garden centre would have been astronomic and we have some plants that are often not readily available on sale. This month we therefore review a number of practical ways of propagating and indicate what can be produced with relative ease by each method. Splitting of mature root balls: The easiest propagating method is to split large root clumps in the autumn or spring. This can be done with a wide range of perennials including herbs, vegetables, bulbs

EXPENSIVE: Garden centres can be pricey.

and flowering plants. Often pots of the latter are already root bound when purchased from a garden centre. We therefore carefully remove the plant from its pot and prise the roots apart to produce up to a dozen or more good plantlets from a single purchased plant. Root cuttings: New herbs such as mint and

ginger and rhizomes such as irises can be produced by cutting off and planting up a short length of a healthy strong root. Leaf cuttings: Pot plants can be easily raised this way. Remove any healthy young leaf and pin the leaf down on the surface of the soil or sink one edge of the leaf into the soil. Stem cuttings: This is probably the most popular method used by both amateur gardeners and commercial growers for the reproduction of shrubs. The cuttings can be rooted by planting up in pots or directly into a flower bed or special nursery corner of the garden. Rooting can be stimulated by dipping

CUTTING: Propagating plants can save a fortune. the cut ends of cuttings in rooting powder before inserting them into the potting compost. For roses a useful Spanish trick is to cut a two centimetre slit in the end of each cutting and insert a dried sweet corn seed in the slit before planting. Removing runners or baby plants: Some plants develop runners with small rooted plants on the ends. Strawberries, raspberries, spider plants and aloes are easily multiplied in this way. Next week we will give more tips on propagating plants.

The truth about treating black mould ALTHOUGH the internet abounds with mould related, horror stories and some accounts are liberal with their use of poetic licence, the truth is that mould is bad for you. People who live in an atmosphere where they are inhaling the airborne spores that are present where mould growth is visible, expose themselves to a very definite, significant and, in some

cases, serious health risk. Symptoms can range from a persistent cough to the far more shocking instances where mould inhalation has been cited as the cause of death. Especially around children and the elderly, its presence in our homes should not be tolerated and trigger immediate action. Those who have tried, know how difficult it is to successfully remove mould

NO MORE MOULD: The Mould Medics provide a treatment guaranteed to prevent mould re-growth. that has taken hold and how frequently it just keeps on growing back. We can all testify that bleaching and repainting it simply doesn’t work. Even those expensive additives that claim all sorts of properties rarely seem to work very well. Mould Medics are a specialist, mould treatment and damp-proofing contractor who are providing a treatment guaranteed to prevent mould regrowth for a minimum of 10 years. “The success of the ‘NoMoreMould’ system is its common sense approach to the problem and it has been formulated with only one thing in mind. Kill mould and stop it coming back.” says Mould Medics’ Tim Webber. “The product we use to kill the

mould does just that. It’s made for the job. Similarly, the treatment that we apply bears no resemblance to the offerings you will encounter in any retailer. Our product uses a very different technology. When dry, the surface of the product simply won’t allow mould to grow on it and although it comes in white as standard, we are able to tint it to fit in with customers’ decorative preferences. This flexibility combined with the 10 year guarantee against regrowth of mould makes the ‘NoMoreMould’ system tough to beat”. Check out their website at www.mouldmedics.es for more information. Geneva showcase for the McLaren P1 THE new McLaren P1 supercar will be making its official debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Photos from its Middle East launch in front of VIPs in Bahrain show the ‘mean street racing car’ concept of the British company’s team of designers. It will use the twin-turbocharged 3.8L V8 used in the smaller MP4-12C. But with a state of the art KERS energy storage system power will be boosted to more than 800 horsepower. That should see the successor to the F1 accelerate from 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds and from 0-100mph in just 5.5 seconds. Even the P1’s steering wheel has been designed for performance, with its diameter determined by McLaren’s extensive experience in Formula One racing. With this much attention to detail, the P1 is bound to be exceptional to drive on the track, even if it won’t be the most comfortable ride. A McLaren spokesman said: “It is designed with one aim in mind, to simply be the best driver’s car in the world, on road and track. The McLaren P1 is one of the decade’s most highly anticipated cars.

SUPERCAR: Inspired by Formula One engineering.

“Inspired by Formula One engineering, it will offer exceptional aerodynamics, amazing performance and bespoke design for every owner.” Only 500 will be built, at a price tag expected to approach €1 million. McLaren calls the cabin ‘minimalist’ in its design, and the carbon fibre used throughout the interior is there for function as well as to look good. You’d be hard-pressed to find anything that isn’t necessary for performance.

There’s no wood trim, no metallic accents and no leatherwrapped dash. In fact, spartan may be a better word to describe the interior than minimalist, and the full-on race-carfor-the-street look probably won’t appeal to all potential buyers. While the driver is surrounded by everything he needs and nothing he doesn’t, the passenger is left looking at a vast expanse of carbon fibre. To save weight, the P1 forgoes interior sound deadening and makes lightweight carpeting an available option. The racing-style seats use minimal

Audi reveals its Black Edition AUDI has revealed its Amplified Black package on TT Coupé Black Edition models. It adds distinctive black exterior styling features to the sporty high-end Black Edition. It also includes 19-inch ‘five-arm rotor’ design black alloys. The package is available in combination with a choice of four exterior paint finishes: Misano red, Daytona grey, Glacier white, or Samoa orange normally only available on TTS. In the UK it will add €840 to the list price, on top of the Black Edition cost.

Specification (in addition to Black Edition) • 19-inch x 9J five-arm rotor-design black alloy wheels with 255/35 R19 R tyre • Black exterior design elements: fixed rear spoiler, front spoiler, door mirrors, exhaust tailpipes • Three-spoke multifunction steering wheel with a more contoured rim • Metallic paint (choice of four colours) • Samoa orange inlays.

public reaction while carrying out engineering tests on a prototype. Toyota’s i-Road promises to generate a lot of interest, having been developed as a compact, emissions-free personal mobility concept. The concept is designed to offer fast and efficient urban transport for two people. Also at the Japanese car giant’s stand will be the production-ready Auris Touring Sports and the fourth-generation RAV4, supported by two design studies, the RAV4 Premium and RAV4 Adventure.

padding, and their carbon fibre shells deliver a weight of just 10.5 kilograms each. Though standard seat belts are fitted, anchor points for six-point harnesses are also included. Even the seat recline function is limited, with the seats offering a 28 degree from vertical setting and a 32 degree from vertical setting, to accommodate helmeted drivers. The seat height (for driver and passenger) is determined at the time of ordering, though this can later be changed in the workshop. Unlike a race car, however, the P1 does make concessions to civility and occupant comfort. There’s a standard climate control system, as well as a navigation system and an audio system developed specifically for the P1 by Meridian. The car’s glass canopy maximizes outward visibility, allowing precise placement while also opening up the cabin.

SOCCER ROUND UP Last week, it was two wins, two draws and two defeats for six British clubs in Europe. In the Champions League, Manchester United drew 1-1 with Real Madrid in Spain while Celtic crashed 3-0 to Juventus at Parkhead. In the first legs of the knockout stage in the Europa League, Tottenham were ‘Baled out’ again by Gareth who scored both goals from free-kicks in a 2-1 win over Lyon… Oscar hit Chelsea’s winner against Sparta Prague to give them an away goal advantage… Newcastle drew with Metalist Kharkiv… and Liverpool lost 2-0 to Zenit St Petersburg. The return legs take place this evening. As predicted, there were shocks in the FA Cup, the biggest coming at The Emirates where Arsenal, who haven’t won a trophy since 2005, were KO’d 1-0 by Blackburn and Oldham scored a dramatic late equaliser to hold Everton 2-2. Unfortunately, it’s all over for non-League Luton, beaten 3-0 at home by Millwall; MK Dons lost 3-1 to Barnsley, Brentford and Leeds both suffered 4-0 defeats at Chelsea (with Frank Lampard’s 199th goal) and Manchester City respectively, Wigan beat Huddersfield 4-1, while Manchester United ousted Reading 2-1 on Monday. • Coventry City FC has been told to ‘pay up or shut up’ and leave the Ricoh Arena unless rent arrears of £1.3 million (€1.51 million) are paid sooner rather than later. WHILE most of England’s focus is on the matches being played in New Zealand, here the Mallorca Cricket Club’s 25 members are keeping their attention on the fields just outside Magalluf. February in Mallorca is mid way through the local cricket season. Although the history of the MCG is not particularly long (established in 1988), they have rather quickly grown from a loose group of expats, yachties, neighbouring islanders and visitors into a well established team. They are capable of playing other competitive teams from Spain’s Asociación Española de Cricket (ACE) league as well as UK based teams travelling down from Britain for a nice sunny game in the islands. The grounds at Magalluf are in excellent condition, with a clubhouse, lounge and bar. Changing rooms and showers complete the professional area and outside there is an area with tables and chairs on a large covered terrace. Anyone interested in watching cricket is welcome to come along for a nice cricket experience. If you think you might be interested in playing you are invited to contact the Secretary at robhughes@mallorcacri cket.com or go along to the club.
