Spending to accumulate plan to promote tourism A RECORD tourism budget of €100,000, is predicted for Roquetas de Mar. The Association of Tourist Promoters, comprising of hoteliers, the town hall and related services, held its first assembly of 2013 to analyse ways to build the tourist potential of the town. The meeting is seen as the first step towards a final agreement on the budget, which the association has so far failed to achieve in its two year existence. But the association hopes it will get agreement for the €100,000 figure. It claims to have united the public and private tourist sectors of the

Drugs network wound-up A DRUGS network that was allegedly trying to smuggle 93 kilos of cocaine into Spain for distribution in Almeria has been wound-up by the National Police. Five people in Galicia and two in Malaga were arrested as alleged members of the gang. The drugs were supposed to be smuggled to Spain via Chile from Bolivia through Algeciras Port (Cadiz) before being sold in Almeria. But Chilean customs seized the packs of cocaine which were hidden inside blocks of marble, before they were shipped to Algeciras. Spanish and Chilean customs and police liaised in the investigations, leading to the arrest of the alleged gang members.

Three detained for violent robbery TWO people are being held by the Guardia Civil as suspects and another one has been charged for a series of eight robberies targeting elderly victims. The gang allegedly specialised in home and street robberies, mainly focused in Roquetas de Mar and Aguadulce, with some also committed in Huercal de Almeria and Turre, according to the Guardia Civil investigations. Almeria’s wilderness years for business Roquetas and 15 per cent in El Ejido, the three main municipalities in the province since 2006. Wholesale business’ figures are not much different, as decreases recorded in Roquetas and Almeria since 2006 were 20.8 per cent and 17.4 per cent respectively.
Wholesalers in El Ejido, however, suffered a modest 4.2 per cent drop in sales. The report also depicts the changes in business trends depending on their size. Small retailers account for scarcely 2.3 per cent of the overall

A Disney welcome to Mojacar A STRING of popular characters linked to the history of Mojacar is welcoming tourists coming to town. Open doors an attraction THE emblematic fort of Huercal Overa has received around 400 visitors since opening its doors. School timetable WORKS for building two new schools are on time. Storms batter Almeria ALMERIA is counting the cost of storms after torrential rain, snow and winds of up to 110km/h battered the province. An orange alert was called on Saturday as the storms swept across the region. Emergency services were called out to 2,054 incidents, mostly traffic accidents due to fallen trees, ice and other debris on the roads. The AL-302, AL-5407 and the AL-3102 of the Capitol, Bacares and La Cañada regions were closed. Sea crossings to Africa and flights to Melilla were cancelled, leaving travel-lers stranded in hotels across the province until the alert was lifted on Monday. Since then workers have been clearing the debris from roads and towns.

Care home fraud MANAGERS of a home for the elderly kept charging the authorities for medicine for 24 residents even after they had died, it has been claimed. Now the managing directors of the centre in Vicar have been charged with alleged fraud worth nearly €4,400. According to Guardia Civil investigations, they kept prescribing medicine for the residents who had died between January 2010 and June 2012. Inspectors from the Andalucian Health Deputy Office in Almeria discovered the alleged offences and reported them to the Guardia Civil.

Ex-mayor faces 180 years in jail
Mugger targets elderly women A MAN aged 37 has been arrested for a string of vicious muggings of four women in their 80s. National Police in Almeria accused him of attacking the elderly women in the Zapillo area of the city. Officers allege he would assault them in their apartment halls or inside lifts, grabbing their purses. Police sources reported the suspect had stolen around €290 and two mobile phones in the assaults. In two cases the mugger allegedly punched the women in the face, causing them injuries.

FARMERS have been left counting the cost after strong winds and heavy rain damaged greenhouses. Worst affected have been structures more than 30 years old, said Livestock and Farmers Co-operative (COAG). Now it says 30 per cent of older greenhouses need to be modernised and structurally
strengthened. But the problem is who will pay for the work. COAG holds little hope that the Andalucian Government will help. And, it says, farmers are having trouble raising cash from banks and financial companies due to the economic crisis, with grants from the EU also in short supply.
FORMER mayor of Zurgena Candido Trabalon faces a long prison for his role in a corruption case. Almeria Public Prosecutor’s Office will ask for a sentence totalling 180 years and a ban from holding public office for 1,050 years for the Socialist Andalucia Party (PA) ex-mayor who formed part of the team in coalition with the Conservative Popular Party (PP).
He is accused, along with 23 other people including estate agents, promoters and architects, of 120 offences, including falsifying documentation, bribery and corruption. It is alleged he granted licences for the construction of One Family housing units in areas not designated for development. In exchange the constructors involved built a house and flats on two plots of land belonging to the mayor.
Cut free from car FIREFIGHTERS had to cut free a seriously injured man from the wreckage of his car near Barranco del Tesoro. He was the only occupant of the car, which left the A7 at Km 506. He is in a serious condition at the Inmaculada Hospital, Huercal Overa, with a suspected broken hip.

Burly councillor catches thief A BURGLAR got more than he bargained for when he broke into a city councillor’s home. Burly politician Fernando Molina, a martial arts expert, captured the would-be thief and held him for nearly an hour until police arrived. The PP (Conservative) councillor in Merida, Extremadura, was woken at 4am by noises. He went downstairs and found himself confronting a
stranger. The councillor, described as a large and strong man, dragged the thief to the porch to get him as far away as possible from his family. His wife followed Monlina’s instructions to take their 17-year-old daughter to the car and call the police. “I’m not a hero, nor a brave man. I think anyone would have reacted in the same way if the life of those they love was in danger,” said the councillor.
Used oil campaign A CAMPAIGN to heighten awareness of the need to recycle used cooking oil has been launched. The oil is highly toxic to the environment and should be disposed of properly. Everyone who participates will receive the gift of a plant donated by the provincial government’s garden centre.

Heritage rewarded THE Al Mosaquer Moors and Christians Association from Mojacar are to be given the Indalo de Oro award. It is awarded every year by the town hall to people or organisations whom they think contribute the most to improve Mojacar’s public image. The association, which gathers together seven Moors and Christians
brotherhoods, will be presented with the honour during the upcoming Fitur tourism trade show in Madrid, from January 30 to February 3. This year’s Moors and Christians festival, marking its 25th anniversary, will be held in Mojacar from June 7-9. It marks the reconquest of Muslim Spain by the Christians.
Probe into abusive graffiti AN internal investigation has been launched by the head of Almeria Police after abusive graffiti about a city councillor was daubed on walls. In a series of graffiti attacks on walls around the city, PP (Conservative) councillor Maria Muñiz has been described as ‘the cancer of the local police’. But the vandalism is not all bad news for the police department as more graffiti lauds a dozen officers as ‘good colleagues’. Now the head of the local police has ordered an investigation on the assumption that the perpetrator works within the department. Muñiz has called the authors of the insults against her ‘cowardly’ and added that this kind of behaviour cannot be permitted amongst comrades.

Council in parking cash row A POLITICAL row has blown up after Mojacar Council diverted cash destined for improving degraded areas of the town into a private parking scheme. Manuel Zamora, spokesperson for the Socialist PSOE
party at the town hall said: “We are taking action and opposing what we believe to be an underhand move by the mayor and the local PP (Conservative) government. We are determined to not
let this plan go ahead.” The PP has justified its actions by saying it is trying to improve the parking services of the area. “All the proposed project will really achieve if it is allowed to
go ahead is to reduce services further than they already are. In the end, if they keep privatising everything, they’ll have to explain to the public what the town hall is actually there for,” said Zamora.
Mobile home broken into A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Cabo de Gata has been arrested, accused of stealing from a mobile home. Guardia Civil officers caught the man after the victims of the crime came forward to report the incident in which the home’s window was broken. Cash, a video camera and a mobile phone were stolen during the incident in Pujaire. The Guardia Civil was helped in its investigations by several witnesses, who said they saw someone wandering around the home at the time of the crime, believed to be an acquaintance of the owner.

Stepfather held for alleged child abuse
Conviction for murder overturned A MAN jailed for 15 years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend has been acquitted by the High Court. In confirming an earlier appeal against his conviction the court ruled that it could not be proven that he had murdered Mari Cielo Cañavate, in Hellin (Albacete) in October 2007. Judge Antonio del Moral said that despite FRG having a ‘cold attitude’ or that evidence he gave was contradicted by others, there was not enough proof against him for a safe conviction. FRG was released from prison in Albacete last March. He said: “I have always had confidence in my lawyer, justice and God.”

Up to 10 per cent more for electricity ELECTRICITY has gone up by 3 per cent at the start of 2013, but users will be paying between 6 and 10 per cent more on their bills. The need to put up prices is due to the €1.95 billion deficit which the Ministry of Industry reported recently, and which it aims to reduce to zero. From now on, clients will be able to
contract a wattage which fits the needs of their home and will be provided at an average, pre-agreed price. Bills will be based on the consumer’s use of electricity, and if they use more than average, they will be made to pay 10 per cent extra. This will affect consumers with low tension power of between three and 10 kilowatts.
A MAN has been arrested in Lleida, Cataluña, accused of raping his stepdaughter and two other underage girls. National Police report that the alleged attacker, of South American origin, has lived in Spain for many years. He is accused of sexually abusing his stepdaughter since she was 12, when they were still living in his country of origin, until she was 15, when they were living in Palma de Mallorca. The girl was allegedly forced to have sex with him, and he used physical violence if she refused, as well as threatening reprisals against her
younger brother and mother if she told anyone what had happened. The National Police Family Attention Service in Palma de Mallorca discovered what had happened after the accused separated from the girl’s mother, who later decided to report him. Investigating officers were able to identify the other two minors involved, friends of the victim, who were also sexually abused by the accused. He had threatened to publish intimate videos of them if they did not submit to his demands. He has been remanded in custody.

Violent burglary FOUR armed raiders handcuffed an antiques dealer and his wife while robbing their home. They threatened three members of the same family in Sanlucar de Barrameda, Cadiz, with guns and later gagged them while they stole items from the house. According to police sources the robbery took place when the man and his wife and a third member of the family entered the house. The four men, who had been waiting in the garage, then forced their way into the house. Once inside, they immobilized the family and ransacked the house, taking €3,000 in cash, jewellery and other valuable objects, and then escaped in the family’s car.

20 per cent of youths threaten people online ALMOST 20 per cent of youths between 12 and 18 admit that they have used the internet to threaten friends or acquaintances. Twenty-seven per cent used the internet to insult their friends and acquaintances using a false identity. This was revealed in the Adolescents and Social Media report carried out by the Spanish Confederation of Educational Centre and supported by the European Commission. It shows that the use of violent language has increased on social networks, as a reflection of a society in which 55 per cent of youths justify the use of violence as a means of defending their rights. Twenty-five per cent would work for a company which issued violent content and 24 per cent would teach their children to use violence if necessary. The study was carried out with 7,000 youths at 50 schools in Spain and Italy. One in four would be interested in using firearms and 12 per cent would sign a petition to legalise them, 56 per cent would sign a manifesto against violence and 30 per cent consider there should be laws to limit violent media content.
INTERNET: Most parents don’t know what goes on. Forty-two per cent of youths spend more than three hours on their social network profile and 72.5 per cent have at least one profile, although only 14 per cent have a blog or upload videos. Only 30 per cent of youths who spend a lot of time online carry out activities with their friends,
and while 67 per cent say their parents control their studies and what they do in free time, only 42 per cent of parents control what their children do online. Almost 50 per cent do not give them advice on how to behave online and 60 per cent of youths don’t talk to their parents about what they do online.

Q: IN 2002 we bought a house off-plan on an urbanisation near Mazarron. The house was finished and we received the keys in 2005. We moved to Spain in 2007 to live here. Now we have been told that our house, along with 28 others, is illegal because the developers did not have a proper building licence. I would be happy just to get my original money back, about €100,000. Is there some way I could do this? I asked the estate agency for a valuation after we get our official title deed, the escritura. EU flogging a dead horse as eurozone misery is inflicted THE day after Manuel Barroso announced that ‘the existential threat to the euro had been overcome’, the monthly report from Eurostat showed eurozone’s unemployment levels soaring to figures that can only be described as disastrous. Maybe not, perhaps, for the EU barons, but certainly for the millions of unfortunates suffering as a direct result of the commission’s demanded austerity. The jobless percentage of the Spanish active population has climbed to 26.6 per cent overall and 56.5 per cent for the youth of the country, lying second only to Greece in this macabre sprint towards oblivion. Portugal, Ireland and Slovakia have all achieved record levels, and taking the eurozone as a whole, the percentage is a frightening 11.8 per cent. Of course, these are merely numbers – cyphers – as far as the EU fat cats with their inflated salaries and expense accounts are concerned, but one might be forgiven for wondering how long Barroso, for example, would survive unscathed, if he decided to embark on a ‘presidential walkabout’ unescorted! The problem is the widening gap between the more affluent economies of the eurozone north, like Germany, Austria, Holland and Finland, and the south, represented by Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal and, as an offshoot, Ireland. This gap was, from the beginning, forecast by many financial correspondents who asked: ”How can such widely differing economies and cultures be expected to work and

FAT CATS: EU barons unaffected while millions suffer. live together?” It was clear to many that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ single currency could not work, but as always, the politicians insisted they knew what was best for ‘the children’ who should be seen but not heard. Mario Draghi has done his best, overriding Berlin’s ingrained suspicion of anything carrying the aroma of ‘mutualisation’, and engineering a write-down of Greece’s unsustainable mountain of debt, hoping that this would be enough to lift that economy back into balance. However, the managers of international finance houses – not to mention the credit agencies – beg to differ. The unremitting fault in the single currency lies, as Peter Oborne says in his beautifully argued article in The Telegraph, in the fact that it was born of an ‘idea’ which, under the
creed of ‘idealism’ means it is immutable and therefore must be correct. That is the very opposite of the Anglo-Saxon way of thinking, which holds ‘empiricism’ as the mainspring. As Oborne explains, the empiricist, having burned his hand in a flame, will resolve not to repeat the exercise, whilst idealists are much less likely to renounce a course of conduct, not even when reality gets in the way. An Anglo-Saxon, upon designing the single currency and witnessing its faults, would have given up on it long ago. But the Continentals hold to the thought that the ‘idea’ itself must be made to work. A noble sentiment, perhaps, but one that has inflicted, and will continue to inflict, abject and hopeless poverty and misery upon millions of eurozone citizens.

www.euroweeklynews.es Spain’s new asset reporting law, with the first deadline of 30th April this year, applies to anyone who is resident in Spain and who owns assets outside the country worth €50,000 or more. As this is a completely new requirement, there are many questions about who needs to file a report, what assets to declare, what values to use, how to report jointly owned assets etc. It does not help that the law is unclear in certain areas and so open to interpretation. Residency is an important starting point as to whether you need to file a report or not, and if so when. The new reporting obligation is only imposed on Spanish residents. If you own property here but are not resident, it does not apply to you. However, you need to be 100% sure that you do not fulfil any of the residency criteria. Tax residency in Spain can be more complex than people realise. Many people believe they are not resident but actually are, and so should be paying tax. This issue becomes even more critical with the new reporting law, since the consequences for failing to report an asset are much higher than ever before – you can lose more than the value of the asset. To ensure you get it right, talk to a specialist advisory firm like Blevins Franks which are experts on both Spanish and UK residency issues and how the two interact.

If you own property and spend much time here each year, you need to know where you stand, tax wise, so you can establish the best way to move forward. With specialist advice you could structure your assets to be tax efficient in Spain. Are you planning to become resident? If so, when, and how it will affect your obligation to report? If you were resident in Spain in 2012, you need to file your report by 30th April this year (in future years it will be 31st March). You need to report the value of your assets as at 31st December 2012. With bank accounts you also need to include the average balance over the last three months of 2012, and with property the acquisition value. If you were not resident in Spain
in 2012, but become resident this year, then you do not need to file a report this year. You will need to report assets as at 31st December 2013, so your first reporting deadline is 31st March 2014. This applies even if you move to Spain before 30th April this year. If you left Spain before the end of 2012, your residence condition is still assessed during the tax year ending 31st December 2012 (as with wealth tax returns), and you should file a report if you met the residency criteria. Although the law did not come into effect until 2013, it states that the first year of reporting is for information corresponding to the tax year 2012. Tax residency in Spain You are resident for tax purposes – and so liable for income, capital gains and wealth taxes on your worldwide assets and subject to Spanish succession tax rules (if you are the recipient of a gift or the beneficiary of an estate) - if any of the following apply to you. • You spend more than 183 days (not necessarily consecutive)
here in one calendar year. Temporary absences are ignored unless you can prove you are/were habitually resident elsewhere for over 183 days. • Your “centre of economic interests” is in Spain. • Your “centre of vital interests” is in Spain – i.e. your spouse and/or your dependent minor children live here. In this case you are presumed Spanish resident, unless proven otherwise, even if you spend under 183 days here per year. There is no split year treatment in Spain. You are either resident or not resident for the whole tax year. If you arrive, with the intention of staying indefinitely, during the first six months, you are likely to be regarded as resident in Spain for the full calendar year. If you moved directly from the UK you would also be regarded as UK resident up to your leaving date, so you need to look at the UK/Spain Tax Treaty rules. If you move to Spain in the latter half of the year you will probably be regarded as non-Spanish resident that year. However this would
depend on what previous visits you made to Spain that year, so seek advice. The same principles apply if you leave Spain part way through a tax year. The only way to be certain that you understand all the implications of the new asset reporting law, as well as the residency issues and how to legitimately structure your assets tax efficiently in Spain, is to take professional advice from an established tax and wealth management firm like Blevins Franks. Dia is now in top 100 of retailers LOW-COST supermarket chain Dia now ranks in the commercial world alongside Mercadona, El Corte Ingles and Inditex. They are all amongst the 100 top retailers, according to statistics released by Deloitte. Valencian chain Mercadona continues to lead in the ranking amongst similar stores, although it slipped two points to 44th place. At 47th position is textile giant Inditex, which has risen two places and is eight places in front of its rival H&M (who are at 55), whilst El Corte Ingles is placed at 54 after falling seven places. Dia appears in the ranking for the first time following its split from Carrefour and is currently at number 73. Eroski lost positions this year and fell from 98th to 119th place.

Debit not credit say shoppers THE financial crisis has changed the way in which the Spanish control their spending. The use of Visa debit cards increased by 4.9 per cent in 2012, to €32.3 billion, to the detriment of credit cards and businesses. Transactions increased by 3.5 per cent to €1.6 billion, although the average amounts spent fell by 2.75 per cent to €48 per operation. This
shows that cards are used to pay smaller amounts. Even so, Spain remains a strategic marketplace for Visa, mainly because in Spain people continue to pay with cash more frequently than in other European countries. There are plans to increase the use of the cards to pay on the internet, as last year it rose by 16.4
per cent to €3.9 billion, which is just 5 per cent of the total spent on Visa cards in Spain. Visa is making the launch of its new Digital Wallet (V.me) a priority for 2013. It also intends to increase the use of payment using mobile phones. The company hopes that within four years to have increased the use of this method to 70 per cent of establishments in Spain.

Rather than just snapping and sharing photos or trawling the internet, remember that there are many tricks to cutting down on mobile costs, too. One smart way to use your Smartphone is to sign up to cost-saving apps including WhatsApp and Viber, so as to cut down on the price of individual text messages or phone calls. As a ‘guiri’ living in Spain, I used to rack up a hefty bill for international texts and calls, but now, as many of my family and friends abroad also have Smartphones, we speak and message, free, over various mobile applications. My monthly phone bill has more than halved.

was put on hold as we entered Louis Vuitton, Versace, Alexander McQueen, and Jimmy Choo - and exited from each with a bag. Clearly a case of no expense spared for Daddy’s princess! But when we finally grabbed a sandwich - with the weather more like spring - I noticed most shoppers around were sales bargain-hunters. I just do not see the point in sales. If you want something bad enough, buy it, or fool someone into thinking they want to treat you to it. The latter is my preferred choice much of the time. Thankfully, all the shops on my Daddy’s spending spree don’t believe in sales either, so all my carriers dutifully carried by the driver were fashionably patterned. Shopping and lunch were later followed by dinner and as Daddy wanted to see the apartment which he pays the rent for - we called by, and I added to the treat by ordering a sushi dinner just for the two of us. It can be a little difficult sourcing fresh sushi in the winter, but luckily I know a local delicatessen which brought around the desired dishes especially for us. The next day - after a night of slumber in five-star hotel surrounds, but breakfast alone while Daddy was making phone calls from his room - it was off to the local car dealership. He agreed last year that I could have a new car when he next visited... how lucky was that? But among our jovial bonding, I fear something is wrong. Daddy just doesn’t seem his normal cheery self, and doesn’t want to open up to me. I’ll have to dig a little deeper.

The paper chase in Spain is a huge turn-off WHEN will Spain enter the 21st century? A neighbour trying for three years to arrange for her finca to be linked to the main power supply now available in her area has been asked to provide original papers for the 200-year-old property! When she pointed out to the power company that she did not have them - hardly surprisingly and tried instead to supply all papers to hand, including ownership for the last nine years, and land deeds, she was told these were not sufficient. The paper chase that living in Spain involves cannot even be blamed on the 20th century Franco days, for it is more akin to 18th or 19th century life. Sadly, the authorities however only seek paperwork when they want to be awkward. Proof is found when they automatically dip into bank accounts to take monies owed... without providing any documentation to the account holder, or follow-up receipt! N Hilton, Velez-Malaga (Malaga)
Free Willy I VISITED the Museo Alborania Aula del Mar at Malaga marina. It has left me with an unforgettable image of a lone turtle swimming in an under-sized glass container. A beautiful creature entrapped in terrible conditions. Part of the display highlights the plight of marine life endangered by our everyday rubbish. It shows how turtles in particular suffer in many ways. But the centre spoils this message by keeping its various species in sub-standard conditions, particularly the turtle (I have named him Willy). So through your readership, can we have a campaign to free Willy the turtle, I suggest he is given to the Fuengirola zoo (Bioparc) which has an excellent aquarium section. know excessive drinking bar games go on in Magaluf and Arenal in Mallorca. But that does not mean we should put up with the abuse of our amenities, the police, ambulance crews, bar staff, residents and other holidaymakers by drunks. The prostitutes, robbers and illegal street traders also need to be stopped. These problems are dragging down the name of Mallorca. Clear the air HAS anybody else commented on the air pollution that is now almost daily hanging over the Almanzora Valley (Almeria)?
As I drive towards the valley from the Oria direction, there is a blanket ‘fog’ visible from a distance. It stretches from Arboleas to Olula. This was not present when we moved here in 1996, and it has got steadily worse. For a while it was just in the summer, but now it is here all year. Some days it is possible to see a plume of, I assume, marble dust, coming from the top of the ‘Reverte’ processing plant on Albox Industrial Estate, but that is not the only culprit. Vehicle pollution must be high on the list. The only things that clear it temporarily are good rains and high winds, but once these stop, it is soon back. We came to Spain for good weather and good air. What happened to the latter? Harvey Gooch, Albox (Almeria)
Opening times IF I was a shop owner I would know most people are at work from 9am till 1pm. It would be better opening from 1pm because people are on a break. If bars and restaurants closed between 1pm and 3pm I’m sure the Spanish would have something to say. Things need to change to help Spain get back on its feet. Paul Smith (By email)

Golden geese MIJAS COUNCIL has decided to implement a 1999 law that all electric and telephone wires must be placed underground. The electric cables belong to Endesa, and the telephone wires belong to Telefonica. These private companies should be responsible for the cost of this work. Why are the residents of the urbanisations being penalised again? Residents pay to maintain the roads and they pay for lighting the streets on their urbanisation. They pay the same IBI and rubbish fees as residents in the towns and villages but receive no services in return. They pay for gardeners to keep the urbanisations neat and tidy, while in towns and villages this is carried out by employees of the council. Stomach churning LEAPY’S piece (Issue 1436) stating that hasbeen entertainers should not be challenged about past behaviour because it will stop them earning money is too serious to be laughed away. Hundreds of adults have reported being abused and sexually manipulated when they were underage. That’s children to you, Mr Lee. This is not a witch-hunt. It’s an investigation to uncover those who have damaged young lives. Leapy’s notion that poor showbiz types are being persecuted by public servants jealous of past opportunities is stomach churning. S most of my regulars are aware I don’t make a habit of replying directly to most of the correspondence I receive. Not that I don’t appreciate your letters; of course I do, it’s merely a matter of space and time. This week I’m making one of my rare exceptions. To be accused of being a paedophile sympathiser, and indeed virtually called one, does to my mind merit a bit in my somewhat limited scribble section. This letter is to me a glaring example of how the views of a writer can be twisted and misconstrued. In the first place, my ‘witchhunt’ piece didn’t condone artistes who may have been involved in abusive acts towards children, merely the heavily publicised accusations that they may have been. Hopefully the law in the UK still maintains that a person is innocent until proven guilty. My whole point was that careers were being ruined and livelihoods threatened merely on the basis of accusations. Believe me, when and if these people are found to be guilty, I would like to see them all strung

When you have a crisis, you have to remember why you fell in love with Spain in the first place. You still have the sunny weather and the beach, the warmth and openness of the people. “There is a lot of misinformation about Spain in the European media. We do get up on Mondays to get to work, you know. We even work harder and longer hours than in other European countries! The Nordic media say their countries are paying Spain’s bailout, but it is just not true, Spanish citizens cannot be blamed. And her advice to those wondering whether they dare stay in Spain? “I simply say no worries!”

Web of deceit weaved by the West I WAS one of a privileged few who recently watched a video of the Iranian city of Tehran. Rarely have I seen a more beautiful and modern cosmopolitan city. There were broad tree-lined boulevards lined by fashionable arcades, malls and stores; architectural wonders; super bridges, buildings, parks and highways. A transport structure to impress, randomly taken video images of city parks and plazas showed well dressed people going about their business. The video has since been pulled by those who wish us to think of Iran as a backward and corrupt primitive hellhole desperate for liberation. Iraq was similarly peaceful and prosperous until Western democracies decided to liberate its

TEHRAN SKYLINE: A beautiful and modern cosmopolitan city. Sadly, one only has to read a popular newspaper’s readers comments to blush at the ignorance of today’s generation. There is common belief that Russia and former Eastern Bloc nations are politically corrupt, impoverished and drab. This is far from the case but it helps to maintain the illusion all is well in Western Europe; that Britain and elsewhere in the European Union, though imperfect are better off. Trying to convince people otherwise can be difficult. Visitors
to Kiev, the capital city of Ukraine; Budapest, Prague; the Czech and Slovak republics, Croatia; the Baltic States are taken aback. They are not only impressed by the natural loveliness of these locations but of the lack of crime, lifestyle and wellbeing of those fortunate enough to live there. Yes, there is social deprivation, corruption and hard times are experienced in these lands, but is far less evident than in the West. Throughout the former Soviet nations there is an illusion that
opportunity, prosperity and political integrity are superior in Western Europe. The truth is corruption and incompetence is a widespread political failing regardless of country. Riots and institutional violence in the West remind me of the collapse of the USSR. Because of the internet and budget air travel we now have the freedom to explore as never before. What a shame if the harshest censor of all was our own lack of curiosity.

A
HEFTY milestone in my life swept past largely unnoticed last week: we have now been in Mallorca for one whole year. The anniversary was not accompanied by the pop of a Champagne cork due to the tediously dry January (damn those New Year’s resolutions) and no congratulatory cards dropped through my letterbox even though the occasion, here in the land of the sun, may deserve it. It would be handy if we expats had a little badge with the number of years in situ. That way we’d know whom to turn to for information when needed. Or reassurance we plumped for the right country to emigrate to. Or someone to explain the curious cultural differences in layman’s terms. The plethora of celebrations for various saints for example. I had just mastered the holy trinity of Santa Claus, the Easter bunny and the tooth fairy, when along come
more fiestas than you could shake a sacrosanct stick at. Hot on the heels of Three Kings Day came San Sebastian and then Sant Antoni; each occasion seems to call for processions, vast amounts of bonfires and people dressed in anything from royal fineries to demon incarnates. The dressing up seems to be constant. Now, I am all in favour of livening up the humdrum of daily life with a costume, but the slightly fearsome white outfits they don for Easter won’t be finding their way into my wardrobe any time soon. Of course, all these festivals seem to take place so late in the evening that I am nodding off and pleading with my kids to let me go to bed. With 12 months under my belt, I really thought I would have the hang of this ‘up-all-night’ capacity of the locals, but, sadly, this is one cultural aspect which shall forever remain a mystery. “Don’t worry! By next year you’ll have dinner at
10pm and go to bed at 5am,” Spanish friends reassure me, but I think there is little hope. How many years do you have on your badge? Do write in and tell me at what stage you magically metamorphosise into a night owl. Of course, it could all be down to the fact that here in Spain emotion and following your heart rule the roost. Just listen to the music. You could probably count on the one hand the number of songs that don’t include heart-rendering wails of ‘mi corazon’ being ‘roto’. Clearly, sleeping slips down the to do list when engaged in such raptures of emotional torment. And what follows music if not dancing; a huge cultural difference. While I can just about survive a bit of wedding dancing if push comes to shove, the Spaniards seem to be born with the ability to Flamenco or shake their booties in manners entirely out of this world. I sometimes skulk into the Zumba class at

my local gym to glean a few tips. The Spanish contingent generally dance their hearts out at the front while I and a couple of equally double leftfooted individuals stay firmly at the back. So, as you can see, I still have a long way to go to become a true Spaniard, but I am working very hard at it: Language classes, tick. Learn to keep up with the local drivers, tick. Absolutely positively refuse to leave the glorious sun here for at least another year, tick! IN COSTUME: The dressing up seems to be constant.

So with the wind in my hair and sand in my toes (and ears and eyes and socks and knickers and even in my bra) I set off all Wordsworthian leaving the fey Byronic killjoy behind. The stumble down the cliff was great fun and the walk on the beach bracing. We talked and laughed and admired the view (although no nude bathers appeared to brighten, or darken our
day). The Mediterranean looked stunning and the winter sun warmed us. Our children played, or argued as was their wont, and we all ate chocolate biscuits. Lou Reed would have been proud of our perfect day. Sunday; day of friends and reflection, of comfort eating and view admiring, is the yardstick by which I will measure the success of my life. From now on, the settee will have to compete with the sea, but fear not sweet indolence, you shall not be usurped. For truth be told I am still a creature of gentle contemplation and daydreams, except that now and then I will intersperse those pleasures with a stiff walk and an even stiffer Scotch at journey’s end. www.euroweeklynews.es FOR Frank El Malagueño, from Altea on the Costa Blanca, it would be quite a surprise if he found himself eating horse meat instead of pure beef. “I have no objection to eating horse meat but when shoppers think they are buying beef, that’s what they should get,” he said. Blaming manufacturers for misleading the public, he plans to continue to check the labels on food products. But Alan Walters was not surprised to learn that horse meat has been found in beefburgers. “They put anything in burgers and sausages, but in the end horse meat is better than artificial flavours and chemicals,” said the resident of Dolores, in Alicante. “However, it would make me think twice about buying them,” he added. Meanwhile, Felisa Cortes from Benidorm on the Costa Blanca has often eaten horse meat and has no qualms about continuing to do so. “But I have never eaten a bought hamburger and do not intend to start now as it is anyone’s guess what goes into a commercial burger,” she said.

wouldn’t eat anything I have not prepared myself.” His wife Valerie agreed. “We don’t eat processed food or ready meals and this is why, there is so much rubbish in them,” she believed. For Paul Dominy on holiday in Benalmádena on the Costa del Sol, when he returns home to Loughborough in the UK, he says: “I’m going to toss out all the burgers I have,” adding that when shopping nowadays: “You really never know what you’re getting and this is the proof.” Businessman Graham Clark, owner of the Café Porky Pies in Benalmádena, said that until now: “Frozen beef patties have been the only thing we buy out,” but following the revelations of horse meat in beefburgers he has decided to start making his own using Frank. meat from a local butcher’s, the same place he gets the rest of his meat products from.

Start to get fit for the new year ahead TODAY’S article is aimed at those of you who have not done any exercise for a long time, maybe never, but feel that the new year brings a fresh incentive to start getting a little fitter. Guidelines constantly change on how much exercise we should take for optimum health, but here are the latest recommendations for a complete novice:How much should I be doing? For general health benefit, adults of all ages should achieve a total of at least 30 minutes moderate activity a day on five or more days of the week. Moderate activity means any activity that leaves you feeling warm and breathing more heavily than usual. You don’t have to be completely out of breath or work up a sweat. Why 30 minutes? Any increase in activity will benefit your health, but research shows that 30 minutes
of moderate intensity physical activity on five or more days a week is the amount needed to keep the lungs, heart, muscles and bones in good working order. You can split the 30 minutes up into two bouts of 15 minutes or three bouts of 10 minutes. If 30 minutes a day sounds a lot to you Then start with five minutes at least three times a day and build up gradually to the 30 minute target. If you are limited by a health condition such as arthritis - don’t worry -any amount of addit-ional activity will make a difference. As soon as you start to
become more active you will notice the following changes: You will feel better, have more energy and start to enjoy life more. Your concentration and sleep patterns will improve. You will relax more easily, leading to a reduction in stress and anxiety. This will lead to you feeling more selfconfident and give you a sense of achievement. If you are exercising out of doors or in a group, this will keep you in touch with other people and you will make new friends. After 10-12 weeks, add in some weight training and stretching and you’ll have a plan you can stick to for a lifetime.

This was a building boom and we all enjoyed and shared it - as with the local fiestas - from what I remember of it.

HERE seems to be an ‘it’ll do’ mentality about airport design. They spend hundreds of millions building unused white elephant airports, but approach roads to existing airports are badly signposted. Valencia’s airport approach is a maelstrom of fast-moving multi-junction roads every few hundred metres. The few airport signs are tiny and half obscured. Placed within 500 metres of the turn off on what appears to be a road leading to an industrial estate you have .05 seconds to turn. In daylight a nightmare; in darkness, don‘t ask. JUST REDUCED! ATTENTION will turn to the FA Cup this weekend. The first of 16 fourth round FA Cup-ties takes place tomorrow (Friday) night when Millwall play Aston Villa. On Saturday a further 12 will be played including Bolton v Everton, Brighton v Arsenal, Macclesfield v Wigan, Manchester United v Fulham, Norwich v Luton, QPR v MK Dons, Reading v Sheffield United and Stoke v Manchester City, while the last three on Sunday see Oldham take on Liverpool, Spurs visit Leeds and Brentford entertain Chelsea. There’ll be an upset or two; there normally is! The African Cup of Nations is well under way with at least one game taking place virtually every day over the next two to three weeks. Early results saw South Africa held to a draw by Cape Verde and Morocco likewise by Angola. The strongest countries seem to by DR Congo, Ghana and Nigeria. We’ll see what transpires. The winners of the Australian Grand Slam singles finals will be crowned this weekend, and at the time of going to print, Olympic gold medallist Andy Murray was looking strong, as were Messrs Federer and Djokovic (after one gruelling five-hour, five-set marathon) while Maria Sharapova was bang in form in the women’s section.

The last Reds’ player to achieve a three in three feat was Ray Kennedy in 1974… And QPR (who’ve got rid of Djibril Cisse) earned a point at West Ham for whom Joe Cole scored his first goal for 10 years. • Southampton sacked manager Nigel Adkins three days before Monday’s home PL game with Everton, replacing him with unknown Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino. The fans aren’t happy! • It’s ‘Cities’ 1-2-3 in the Championship with Cardiff leading Leicester and Hull by 10 points. • Barcelona (2-0 up and despite another Lionel Messi goal) lost in La Liga for the first time this season, beaten 3-2 by mid-table Real Sociedad. • Watch out for some interesting deals this week with the ‘transfer window’ closing next Tuesday. Several people have put a spoke or two in his works (or should that be his wheels) so we’ll see what happens once the solicitors get involved!

Hard work on green paying off
Good day for the Miles’ FORUM GOLF SOCIETY’S first event of 2013, an individual stableford at Valle del Este was a very good day for the Miles family. Phil Miles picked up two prizes, but had to give centre stage to his wife, Ann, who strolled to victory with a very impressive 44 points. Pat Garrigan cemented his place at the top of Division Two of the Ford League standings by scoring 38 points to finish second, one better than Phil Miles, who was third with 37 points. Alan Crofts was fourth with 34 points, edging Reno Palagano into fifth on countback, with John Mills taking sixth ahead of several others who all scored 32 points using the same method. Five nearest the pin in two prizes were on offer, with these going to Derek Manning, Pat Garrigan, Adrian Foster, Phil Miles and Mike Duckham. Forum’s upcoming fixtures are February 8, a team lone ranger competition at Lorca and on February 22, a stableford at Alboran.

Triples winners at Cabrera Bowls Club CABRERA Bowls Club held the finals of the Los Amigos Drawn Triples. The four day competition finished on Sunday under blue skies, but in blustery conditions at the Turre club.
In the final, eventual winners, Maureen Stakes, Tony Bird and Gill Young had to play catch up after a shaky start, but after picking up a four, they steadily built up a lead.
Superb win to say a big farewell to striker Tomas Huercal Overa CF 3 – 1 Aguilas CF HUERCAL OVERA CF overcame the conditions to warm up the fans with a big farewell to Tomas Campanas. A great win for Alonso Parra’s Huercal Overa side who in a turbulent week have had injuries, suspensions and transfers dictate a busy seven days against a strong team from Aguilas who are doing well in the league. Striker Campanas has played his last game for Huercal Overa as he moves to Real Murcia Imperial. The striker has been top scorer for the last few years and will be missed. The first half was entertaining; with the home side having the first effort on goal after a shot by Alex was missed by the Aguilas
keeper only to find a defender clear off the line. Then in the 20th minute, Aguilas were awarded a corner from the right hand side which was met on the penalty spot by the head of Raul Fernandez who made it 1-0. The first half finished 1-0 with only some terrible work by the linesman denying Huercal Overa two clear penalties. The second half was vibrant and had everything on a blustery Sunday afternoon, with the home team scoring three, two sendings off, plus injuries. Huercal-Overa finally made the pressure count in the 55th minute when top scorer Tomas Campanas found the net, then
followed up with a second on the 58th minute with a straight forward tap in. In the 81st minute Huercal Overa were awarded a free kick 25 yards out, Jose Moreno stepped up and sent the ball flying into the top right hand corner which sent the home fans wild. The game finished with two straight red cards, one for Huercal Overas Finidi after a high arm was deemed unacceptable by the referee, who then evened up the numbers by sending off Ruben for the visitors with two minutes to go.

CORTIJO GRANDE had two divisions with 38 golfers for its weekly competition. The course is getting better every week thanks to the hard work of the green keeping team, which is really paying off. Winner of the first divison with 33 points was Gary Cashman. He narrowly beat Peter Jackson with 32 into second placed and third with another 32 was Phillipe Dunne. Ball sweep winner was Phillipe Dunne. On Sunday there was a cold wind blowing for the medal day competition. Winner with a net 72 was John Hill. Magnificent Patrick MAGNIFICO is the only way to describe the golf which Patrick Vickery played at Valle del Este golf society’s weekly competition. Patrick, who plays off a handicap of five, had a tremendous round of golf. The results for Friday: first Patrick Vickery 44 points, second Dick Hull (41), third Byran Brown (34). Nearest the pins winners were Phil Dunne and Dave Kaymer. Winners of the four ball better last week were husband and wife Ray and Doris Harrison.
