Cable Ingles work on hold after six months THE project to restore the ‘Cable Ingles’ in Almeria is at a standstill six months after the first renovation works concluded. After many years of

neglect, work on the emblematic mineral loading platform in Almeria finally began. However, the work has been discontinued due to financial issues. The Cable Ingles, which was declared a Cultural Heritage Site (BIC) in 1998, was constructed by the Gustave Eiffel architecture school at the beginning of the 20th century. Talks to renovate the site and transform it into

an exhibition centre, a restaurant and entertainment complex have been going on for years. The current problem has arisen because it is not clear where the rest of the project’s funds are going to come from. The initial work, which required a €2.7 million investment, was paid for by the Ministry of Public Works with the government’s ‘1 per cent cultural programme’ and the Junta de Andalucia.

Now, a joint commission will have to decide how they will fund the remaining €3 million which is needed to complete the delayed project. “The Cable Ingles is as much of a priority as it has been for years,” Provincial Culture Councillor Antonio Lucas announced, adding: “To this date we do not know the joint commission’s decision and we will have to wait and see what happens.”

Real Flamenco this week in Vera THE first Flamenco and Trovo Festival opened in Vera on Tuesday. Vera has an important link with Flamenco and Trovo. Pedro el Morato, the creator of one of the most skilled Flamenco dancestyles ‘El Taranto’, was born in the town in the 1840s. El Taranto roots come from the voices of the Gador and Almagrera miners. One of the most famous Trovo performers, Pepe el Raspajo, was born there, too.

The festival is on until Saturday, ending with the grand finale of the Flamenco Competition at the Vera Bullring at 10pm. This is authentic Flamenco in ‘real’ Spain, as opposed to commercial performances designed for tourists. Thursday’s show is a tango-flamenco fusion and Friday’s includes a performance by Anabel Veloso. Tickets are on sale at Vera’s tourist offices, La Frontera Bar in

40 require medical care due to heat FORTY people have required emergency medical assistance in Almeria due to the extreme temperatures. The regional government has established a yearly ‘Health Prevention Plan against the Effects of High Temperatures,’ which informs locals and visitors of how they can protect themselves from the extreme temperatures and keeps a record on the

number of people who require medical assistance due to heat-related health issues. According to the Health and Social Wellness Council of Almeria 15 people needed emergency medical assistance due to cramps, dehydration, and exhaustion due to the heat, while 25 cases were related to previous illnesses worsened by the temperatures.

Weather forecasts for August initially predicted temperatures between 24 and 35 degrees, although temperatures of above 40ºC can also be expected. The Health and Wellness Council has issued a series of recommendations including staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure during the day and healthy food choices. These measures are especially important for senior citizens and children.

NO TAKERS: Boris’ luxury villa named Son Coll which lies amid olive groves outside the Mallorca town of Arta.

Boris villa to go under hammer

U

NLIKE many foreign homeowners in Spain who want to sell up, Boris Becker is unlikely to be short of a euro or three. For although the former tennis star’s luxury Mallorca villa is set to go under the hammer at a court-enforced auction on September 28, the 44year-old still possesses commercial sell-ability. Proof is that last week one well-heeled charity event diner in London paid €26,250 for the chance to play tennis against the three-times Wimbledon ace. Becker has not been seen at his Mallorca bolthole one hour’s drive from Palma and which carried a €13 million price tag for ‘a long time’, according to a woman caretaker. Recently a Palma judge - on the

advice of a valuation expert - ruled that bidding for the home should start at €8.5 million in a move that profits from the long-awaited sale can settle debts for building and landscaping work said to total around €710,000. Becker’s lawyers had argued that the debts ought to have been settled by the estate agents handling the property sale under an agreement that they pay all upkeep while it remains on the market. But this was rejected by the courts, leading to the auction. Meanwhile, Boris, second wife Lilly and toddler son Amadeus, recently moved from a stylish rented London property to live in a more modest home nearby.

Two men in jewel arrest Eco-gardening TWO men were arrested in Cuevas de Almanzora for allegedly stealing jewellery valued at €18,000, as well as €1,000 in cash. Officers have been able to recover part of the stolen items, and the safe in which they were held along with the victims’ personal documents in their private residence. The investigation has also been able to show that the two men were allegedly involved in three other burglaries in the area. The men were caught selling the stolen items at local pawn shops in Cuevas de Almanzora as well as other towns including Vera, La Garrucha and Aguilas (Murcia).

The Junta invests in La Alpujarra tourism

Belen Carnicer, Councillor for Planning and Public Works, said she had decided to take a 3 per cent pay cut, in support of other public sector workers, who had faced similar measures. Carnicer said her actions are part of the effort needed to overcome the current economic situation.

THE Junta de Andalucia has presented a project to attract more tourists to the Alpujarra mountain area shared between Almeria and Granada. The project will cost the regional government a €716,914 investment, which will benefit 14 towns in Almeria. The money will go towards 19 projects to modernise infrastructure and revalue the region’s natural resources; there

Protests against debt to lawyers PP PARLIAMENTARIAN Rosalia Espinosa defended the cause of the 670 lawyers in Almeria who have not been paid in the past year. According to Espinosa, the legal system is at risk of losing the legal aides who take on cases with government funding. She also noted that the current situation is “very complicated”

and it has made many workers “take to the streets to protest against the Andalucian Government’s debt.” She was referring to the lawyers’ protests that were held in Almeria on June 20. The lawyers of Almeria have taken on 24,420 ‘free’ cases in the past year, most of which have not been paid for. Espinosa declared that it

is the government’s responsibility to ensure citizens’ constitutional rights to have a defendant despite not being able to pay for one. For this reason the PP party has planned to make a petition in September for the Andalucian parliament to commit to setting payments to be made in 90 or 100 days after the legal work is done.

Labour unions plan for strikes LABOUR unions CCOO and CSIF have organised two ambulance worker strikes due to the recent changes in the way they will work. The strikes are planned to take place on August 21 and 23, and September 4 and 6. The Andalucian Health Service (SAS) and company Ambulancias Quevedo have recently reorganised the workforce, which will suppress on-site

ambulance duties, allowing workers to stay at home or continue their daily activities under the condition they be available to work when they receive an emergency call. When they receive the call, they will have to go to the health centre, pick up the ambulance and go to where the patient is. According to a union spokesperson “this will slow

down the response to emergency calls for town residents and visitors, which will risk human lives.” The two unions have also jointly denounced that with this measure 23 ambulances drivers “have lost their jobs,” and that 33 others “have had their full time contracts reduced to part time, which means their salaries will be under €600 a month after taxes.”

A new home and play area for the Doghouse THE DOGHOUSE dogs in the Huercal-Overa area have a brand new home and play area. With the help of a UK school’s head teacher and pupils, more than €500 was raised to buy sheds and other much-needed materials for the foundation. Paul Tighe, who runs the Doghouse said he was really thankful for Anita Warwick’s support and that of her Uplands Primary School pupils. The children from the Sandhurst school have designed and printed special Doghouse charity Christmas cards which are already on sale. The inauguration took place during the Play Day on July 28. These are held on the last Saturday of every month. British people of all ages came to walk and groom the dogs, and generally socialise with them. There was a prize wordpuzzle to win a bottle of bubbly. The answer sheets are to be handed in at the next Play Day on Saturday September 1. Paul and his volunteers said they would really love to see more EWN readers there. They invite people to bring a ball or squeaky toy and help teach the dogs how to play, as some of

The new wooden sheds have open doorways and provide shade and comfort. Paul said he would love to be able to put in a shallow paddling pool and plant some strong shade-trees. Up until opening the new living quarters adjacent to his house, Paul was sharing his home and patio with more than 80 abandoned and in some cases abused, dogs. Last week there were fiestas in Palomares, Sopalmo and Santa Maria de la Nieva, and now they are coming to Garrucha, in honour of the town’s patron Saint, Joaquin. On Tuesday from 11pm there will be live music and a flamenco fashion show. Next Friday there’s a procession starting at 7pm, followed by a magic show and dancing from 10pm. Next Friday children’s rides will be almost half price (1.50₏) at Garrucha’s fair. The times given for events in this article are approximate. Activities in Spain often get behind schedule and are sometimes rescheduled. To avoid disappointment, contact your town hall to confirm details.

SLINGS & ARROWS is set in a health and safety department at a local council, and contains ‘a team of misfits who are hellbent on causing as much chaos as humanly possible’, reports Chortle. The Thin Blue Line’s David Haig will star as the department’s boss Gerald, described as an ‘exasperated everyman’. If the series is picked up, it will be Elton’s first British sitcom for seven years after the short-lived Blessed in 2005. The pilot was recorded at Teddington Studios last Saturday and was directed by The Vicar of Dibley’s Dewi Humphreys. • Room 101 has been renewed for a 13th series. Frank Skinner will return for a second run of the revamped version of the long-running BBC One series, according to Comedy.co.uk. The show was originally hosted by Nick Hancock and then Paul Merton from 1994 to 2007, before it returned in January 2012 with Skinner as host. However, the series saw a new format, where three guests per episode nominated items in different categories, rather than just one guest each show. The eight-part 13th series will shoot in October, with a broadcast expected in early 2013 on BBC One. Room 101’s series finale in March dropped around 800,000

viewers from its launch show. • BBC Two has picked up Rev for a third series. It was reported back in April that the channel was in negotiations with Big Talk Productions to recommission the series. Rev stars Tom Hollander as Adam Smallbone, a vicar who relocates from a rural parish in Suffolk to an inner-city London church. Development on series three will commence this autumn, with a 2014 air date planned, Variety reports. “We’re absolutely delighted to have Rev back on the channel,” said BBC Two Controller Janice Hadlow. “It’s one of the real comedy jewels in BBC Two’s crown.” Big Talk’s Kenton Allen added: “Such is the brilliance of the Rev cast that getting everyone back together for further adventures is always challenging. But I’m delighted that we’ve managed to get Adam and his congregation back into church for what I hope will be an extraordinary third

Ben Elton back after seven years. season of a show that is extremely special for all those involved.” Rev concluded its second series in December last year. • Lance Reddick has claimed that the popularity of Downton Abbey is down to HBO’s The Wire. Reddick - who played Cedric Daniels on the cop drama - told Zap2it that the show paved the way for

Downton’s ‘complex’ storylines. “The legacy of The Wire is tricky,” he said. “It changed television in that it set the bar to a whole new level - a level that I think has never been done before.” The actor continued: “I also think that something like Downton Abbey - which is so complex and so rich in characters - in some ways its popularity is possibly due to The Wire. People realised that this can be done and that people want to watch.” Downton Abbey recently received a total of 16 nods in the 2012 Emmy nominations, including one in the category of ‘Best Drama’. Despite critical acclaim, The Wire never won an Emmy award, but did scoop a writing nomination in 2005 and again in 2008. Property boost from sick euro By Business Editor Brendan Small ONGOING poor euro exchange rates against the British pound are providing a small ray of hope over limited parts of the Spanish second

The strength of the pound now sees it worth around €1.28, compared to €1.14 a year ago. Money! A case of adios all round

Bank of Spain in Madrid.

SPAIN’S banks are haemorrhaging money with depositors reportedly continuing to pull cash out at a frightening rate. More than €40 billion was withdrawn in May, according to a new report from the Bank of Spain. That made total withdrawals for the first five months of the year to €163 billion, representing about 16 per cent of the nation’s GDP. Domestic banks sending money abroad, foreign lenders pulling out cash and mostly non-resident investors dumping domestic assets are said to be jointly responsible for the huge losses. The figures show that austerity measures and requests to help recapitalise Spanish banks only calmed investors temporarily.

BETTER BUYS: Ever-lower prices and a strengthening pound against the euro are giving real estate sales a ray of hope.

Is there stamp duty on a shop rental contract?

Q

I am in the process of renting shop premises in Fuengirola. The rental is to be €2,100 a month, and a gestor tells me that I will have to pay stamp duty of €1,000. Is this absolutely necessary, as I have never heard of it before? D G (Costa del Sol)

A

The short answer is that it is not absolutely necessary to register your contract and to pay the corresponding stamp duty, but it is a very good idea to ensure that the terms of the contract can be You and the effectively enforced. Let’s go into a little Law in Spain more detail. By David Searl The rental contract can be a simple written agreement between you and the owner of the premises. This private agreement may serve very well as long as it is perfectly clear and no serious dispute arises. However, very few contracts cover all the possible situations that can arise. What if you cannot pay the rent for a time? Is this specified? What if the landlord sells the premises? Do you have the right to continue in the shop? Usually it is better to have a formal contract, which you make before a Spanish notary, and which is then registered in a special section of the Property Registry. This registration requires payment of stamp duty, just as if you were registering the purchase of a house in your name, along with the notary fee. Your contract is then a registered legal document and its terms can be enforced more effectively. The fee for this registration has risen steadily recently and is now 1.5 per cent. This percentage is applied to the total contract amount. Your contract sounds like it comes to about €25,000 a year, which would give about €375 for the stamp duty, usually referred to as Actos Juridicos. If the agreement is for a total of three years, this would put your stamp duty somewhere around the fee set by the gestoria. David will respond to queries but reserves the right to select letters which will be of interest to the greatest number of readers. WOOLWICH ferry workers in London have finally reached agreement - after months of talks on extra compensation for additional work during the present London 2012 Olympic Games.

When a real crisis is not seen as the top priority AS many will know, I have often considered the ‘peripheral’ members of the Eurozone, and suggested means by which their problems might be resolved. Most solutions have revolved around the impoverished southern countries voluntarily quitting the Euro instead of just passively waiting until a final economic collapse forces them out. Now, however, Ambrose EvansPritchard, a leading financial correspondent, has come up with an intriguingly alternative plan. Taking Spain’s predicament as a prime example of a bad situation mainly of the national banks’ own making - rendered even worse by political interference and incompetence, he suggests that the debt-ridden peripheral countries, Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Italy and perhaps Ireland - should form their own bloc. Then, using their joint ECB voting representation (against Germany’s two votes, plus a few from other ‘hard-core’ states) they should compel the European Central Bank (ECB) to comply with the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty which oblige that entity to ‘contribute to the stability of the financial system’, thus forcing a showdown. Of course, pointing as it might to ECB bond purchases, this would run contrary to Germany’s long-

standing mistrust of anything that smacks of its own taxpayers being obliged to dig even deeper than they already do, to cover the undoubted costs of such a move. It may also prove to be the proverbial last straw, leading to the hard core nations, led by Germany, storming out in protest. But if this were to happen, it might in fact be the best solution, the final cutting away of the wreckage, and leaving the path clear for a once-again prosperous Europe. With the ‘hard core’ removed from the equation, the ‘Club Med’ countries would have the Eurozone to themselves, which would of course lead to the single currency being drastically devalued on international markets. At first sight FOUR consecutive years of falls in completed this might appear home builds have been recorded in Spain a truly frightening since the 2007 peak in construction, official prospect, but just data shows. In total this represents a 74 per think about it for cent fall in the market overall. a moment.

Falling, and still falling

A devalued Euro would provide these nations with many of the advantages of reverting to their own currencies, but with the provisions of the Lisbon Treaty providing backup from the ECB. Such a realignment would, following a settling-down period with the devalued Euro, allow these countries to recover their competitiveness while honouring their euro-debt contracts. There would be difficult times of course, but for the presently-desperate Eurozone citizens, a glimmer of light in the darkness, leading eventually to the clearing of debts and, should they wish, to making a new start with their own separate currencies. Dearly as I would like to claim credit for these revolutionary ideas, it is Evans-Pritchard who must be awarded top spot on the podium, with a gold medal glinting in the sun. Ideas are wonderful, capable of changing - sometimes quite drastically - the course of individuals and nations, but they need the will to bring them to fruition. Perhaps it’s time the politicians of the peripheral states - those searching so desperately for rescue - considered such proposals. They may, after all, contain the seeds of their salvation.

ONE of the most financially damaging taxes facing wealthier British families is UK inheritance tax. Living overseas does not automatically protect you from inheritance tax since liability does not rest on residence or even nationality, but on domicile. Domicile is a complex UK common law concept. If claiming a change of domicile the onus is on you (or more usually on your family when inheriting your assets) to prove you were non-UK domicile at the date of death, in the event of a challenge from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Anyone who is UK domiciled or deemed UK domiciled is liable to inheritance tax on their worldwide assets. The current tax threshold is £325,000 per individual or £650,000 for spouses/civil partners. Any amount over these figures is taxed at 40%. Transfers between spouses are exempt (unless your spouse is a non-domicile). Assets situated in another country may also be liable to inheritance tax there, although in most cases the UK would give credit for the tax paid overseas. This would be the case for British expatriates living here in Spain. If you are an expatriate

EWN

Your Domicile Status And Liability To UK Inheritance Tax l by Bill Blevins, Financia Correspondent, Blevins Franks

with a worldwide estate worth over the inheritance tax threshold, you need to take professional advice from a firm such as Blevins Franks to establish both your domicile status and how inheritance tax interacts with Spanish succession tax. Blevins Franks are highly experienced in determining domicile and how double tax treaties affect an expatriate’s tax position. Under UK law you can only ever have one domicile at a time. You can never be without a domicile. Your place of domicile does not have to be the country where you have your closest personal association. You can live in Spain for many years and remain a UK domicile. The basic rule is that you are domiciled in the country

where your life is centred, and which you regard as your homeland. Changing your domicile is seen as very serious step. There are three types of domicile under English law: Domicile of origin - a child takes his father’s domicile of origin at the time of birth, not necessarily the country where you are born. A child of a single or widowed mother takes the mother's domicile. Domicile of dependence - applies to women married before 1974, children and mentally disordered persons. Domicile of choice - can be acquired by moving to another country which then replaces either domicile of origin or dependence. To acquire a domicile of choice here you must be physically present and tax resident in Spain, and have formed the intention of living here permanently, and not foreseeing any reason to return to the UK, such as widowhood or illness. You need to sever as many ties as possible with the UK. This in-

cludes disposing of UK property; resigning from memberships; cutting business interests; scaling down UK bank accounts, investments etc, and setting up new ones elsewhere. You should also be careful about the number of trips you make to the UK. Even stipulating in your Will that you wish to be buried in the UK will count against your case. HMRC will look for any indication that you regard the UK as your homeland and may return for good one day. It takes at least three years to shed UK domicile for inheritance tax purposes. You will be deemed domiciled in the UK for inheritance tax if you were UK domiciled at any time in the previous three years, or were resident in the UK for any part of at least 17 of the last 20 tax years. Although the link to domicile of origin can be removed, it is not destroyed and can be instantly reinstated. If you leave Spain and move to a third country, you

would re-acquire your UK domicile of origin unless you can demonstrate you have moved to a new domicile of choice. Inheritance tax is often described as a “voluntary tax” since tax planning devices are available to mitigate or avoid it. There are a number of ways in which your domicile status can be satisfactorily tested, but professional guidance will be required. SPENDING by tourists is putting bread on the table for many Spaniards this summer, and especially for the people of Madrid. Internatonal tourists spent nearly €24 million in the first half of the year, according to figures from the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. This was a 5.6 per cent improvement on figures for the same time last year. The bulk of money was due to spending by British tourists, followed by German, Nordic and then French travellers. But on the reverse side of the coin, there has been a mass exodus of British expatriates worldwide - including an estimated 150,000 plus living in Spain going back to London for the 2012 Olympics. Just over one in every five were said to have plans to return home for the Games. At the same time they would also see family, according to a bank survey.

‘Glamping’ offers a glam side to the challenges of camping CAMPING in any shape or form is not my preferred way of enjoying life. I am not a total novice, as the following clearly displays: I once tried it in the deserts A look of Arabia at finance but almost for females sweated to death. Jane Plunkett Then I jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews. also tried it com in Thailand though there I spent the entire night swatting mosquitoes and poring antiitch cream onto massive bites. And additionally I gave camping a whirl in my native Ireland, and there the wind nearly swept the tent away, while at the same time, a flood of rainwater

Micro motoring keeps industry on road SALES of micro vehicles - which can be used by motorcycle licence holders - plus purchases of small 4x4s are increasing, but Spain’s motoring industry is otherwise in the doldrums, with new vehicle sales falling 17 per cent in July, one of the worst in history.

UNDER CANVAS: Added extras now available with ‘glamping’. soaked my sleeping bag. Not surprisingly, I am therefore now slightly encouraged to hear about ‘glamping’ (glamorous camping). Basically it is camping, but without the mosquito swatting, neck cricks from dodgy pillows and serious sweating induced by cheap plastic tents. Glamping means instead luxurious tents, an outdoor shower, chefprepared meals, organic food, spa treatments and maybe even a butler! In these times of austerity

alternative holidays aren’t just all-therage, they are also a necessity. And luckily for us in Spain, the world of glamping is booming. On the Goglamping website, which offers details about glamping across the world, Spain features the most choices and opportunities. From Extremadura to Murcia, to Alicante and the Spanish Pyrenees, accommodation options range from beautiful traditional Bedouin tents and Safari tents to self-contained yurts and much more. Most glamping sites are set in picturesque mountain areas or cosy bays, but they are always a little off the beaten track. This equals less temptation to spend money in the local shops and restaurants. Glamping prices vary, but for four people sharing, tariffs start from only €30 a night, and just €180 per person for an entire week. Take your own food, barbecue, chill by the pool, enjoy long walks, horse ride or head for fun in the world of water sports... it all sounds appealing. And most importantly the chance to relax and get away from it all in luxury without spending a fortune you do not possess.

Spanish architect takes forgeries fight to court A SPANISH architect, who alleges that Qatar forged nearly 1,000 street lamps she designed, has filed a lawsuit against the Gulf state. Beth GalĂ said she was invited to design the street lamps for a 10kilometre stretch of road in Doha for the 2006 Asian Games. Authorities in the gas-rich state chose the ‘Latina’ design but instead of purchasing the lights from the official manufacturer, they commissioned Ashghal, the Qatari Public Works Authority, to copy the design, the architect claims. GalĂ, together with manufacturer Santa & Cole and the Barcelona Design Centre, have now issued a public statement confirming that after six years of attempting to reach an amicable agreement, she plans to press ahead with a legal case. “The case is now in the hands of the Courts of Barcelona and one of the largest acts of piracy in the history of design committed by a sovereign state is now being made public,â€? GalĂ said in a recent statement published on the

LIT UP: Doha, the capital of Qatar, where forged Spanish-designed street lamps have allegedly been installed. Barcelona Design Centre website. Catalina-based GalĂ said Ashghal requested Santa & Cole to submit lighting designs for a project for Al Waab Street in 2005. GalĂ submitted five designs with models and technical specifications and adapted the design of the Latina light. Ashghal installed approximately

900 forgeries of the light in 2006, said GalĂ. Javier Nieto Santa, Chairman of Santa & Cole, said the forgery shows a complete disregard for copyright. “It is unbelievable that Qatar, a sovereign nation and member of the World Intellectual Property Organisation, could commit such a large case of forgery.â€?

Down to earth AN Australian man claims he was kept on hold for 15 hours by national airline Qantas, during which time he read a book entitled ‘Judgment in Managerial Decision Making’. The carrier says it has no record of the call.

Golden rule is to keep asking one simple question In the first of a new monthly series, Nigel Fitzpatrick looks at how to buy a business BUYING a business in Spain is a daunting prospect when you are from another country. The language barriers, the process plus the red tape make it at times seem impossible, yet actually it’s fairly straightforward. Buying a business here in Spain is no different to buying one in the UK or in other parts of Europe. But there is a simple question to keep asking yourself in Spain. “Would I do this elsewhere, including in the UK? If the answer is no, then invariably it’s right. The golden rule is not to get carried away with it all and keep your head; after all, you are about to go into business! Number One rule is to always appoint a well-known and recommended lawyer. He or she as a lawyer will negotiate on your behalf with the Spanish business owner and landlord (if language is a problem) and help you get the best deal. You may well be purchasing a business run by someone originally from the UK, and because of no language barriers, you may think you don’t need a lawyer. Wrong! Prepare yourself for the purchase, sit down and structure a personal business plan.

Nigel Fitzpatrick

Research the business in question. Do your ‘due diligence’ and don’t rush in. Visit the business at different times of the day, sit outside and watch. Do this for a week and it will provide a good understanding of the situation. Do not ignore potential competitors. See how and what they are doing. Build your knowledge and use it to full advantage when starting your business.

How long does it take to buy a business? Purchasing is not a lengthy procedure as long as all financing arrangements run smoothly and to plan, and normally can be completed in a matter of weeks. A lawyer will normally charge â‚Ź80â‚Ź1,500 for the conveyancing work carried out, and an opening licence, if needed, costs in the region of â‚Ź600.

Next month: I will cover how to compile a business plan. Every business should have one!

Cancer and quake survivor has a clear eye for charity Globetrotting freelance journalist Ulrica Marshall survived the 2011 Japanese earthquake and has now lived in Spain with her family for just seven months. Nicole Hallett reports. Tell us about your debut novel $Expat Wives. Stranger than fiction stories on events witnessed or heard, set to a fictional account of a British woman living in Japan with her family. It is an eyeopener and armchair visit to Japan, although also partially set in Mallorca. Why donate the profits to Run for the Cure Foundation? I am a breast cancer survivor and led an Englishspeaking support group in Tokyo. A friend and fellow survivor established it to help Japanese women receive early diagnosis. Most like to meet? A Hollywood producer keen on turning $Expat Wives into a TV series or movie.

Present work? I write a weekly column for EWN. Future plans? Another novel; really different in the light, tongue-in-cheek tone of $Expat Wives. Scariest experience? In Tokyo during the 2011 earthquake; I thought I was facing the final curtain. Then there was aftershock after aftershock and the radiation scare. Seeing all the horror of people who suffered major losses. Funniest? Six people arriving at my apartment in Japan to change the dishwasher and they returned one week later to ensure it was working to capacity. I guess that is why they have full employment.

EWN COMMENT A study in perpetual motion SPAIN’S short-selling crackdown can bring only short-term benefits and the ban is a threat to liquidity and the functions of the markets, experts warned. Markets are not NGOs and they have little remorse for the misery they inflict with their lust for

constant movement. The economic crisis might be a battlefield for Spain and its government but for the markets and speculators it is simply a croupier’s table.

A drop in the ocean FORMER presidents and ministers must now choose between the 24-month payment routinely granted on leaving office and earnings from their public or private employment. State handouts to those least requiring them are a covetable feature of public life and the measure is a step in the right direction. Nevertheless ‘shut’ and ‘stable door’ come to mind, while a cull of aides and close advisers is still sorely needed.

Taxi! Paying the high price of no late buses

L etters OPINION & COMMENT

EWN

IN his letter (Issue 1412) Andrew Coates asked why public transport terminates so early in Spain. I believe local town halls have an arrangement with taxi drivers. In most leading countries public transport continues with a night service, even if a restricted service. I would gladly pay up to €1 more on top of my usual €1.40 to get out of Benidorm at 2am than pay €14 for a taxi for the same trip. I would rather spend that money on a show or a meal. Spain would do well financially if they encourage people to stay in town for the night and spend money rather than people getting on the 10pm bus back to their towns. The same goes for the airport. The last bus leaves at 11pm when flights are still arriving in the early hours of the morning. M Hughes, Altea, (Alicante)

A little late IT is commendable that the European Commission has sent €21.1million to Spain to cover the cost of the Lorca earthquake (Issue 1413). However, this is 15 months later. Surely this money to repair the streets, railway lines, water supply and sewage as well as re-housing 10,000 residents, who lost their homes, should have come sooner. Ah, well, better late than never, I suppose. Rachel Button, Almeria

Much better I LIVE just outside Javea Port and frequently walk in the area referred to by Phil Harding in his letter (Issue 1412). The two ‘before’ and ‘after’ photographs with his letter show how use of this public thoroughfare has benefited by the removal of the tables and chairs beside the sea wall. No longer is it a narrow and often terribly congested obstacle course. It has become a beautiful, wide and spacious walk, to be appreciated and enjoyed by all residents, visitors and cyclists. A pleasure to view and use and a huge asset to the port’s water frontage. The mayor should be congratulated for his foresight in enforcing the regulations which have brought about this splendid transformation. Peter Twelftree, Javea (Alicante)

Picturesque end to day

I AM 14 years old and have lived in Spain nearly seven years. I enjoy spending lots of time on the beach near my house. I love photography and would like to go to university and study it. This photo was taken one evening when I was walking along the beach and the sun started to set. I picked a good spot behind some tall dry grass and took a few photos. The sky was absolutely beautiful. The colours were amazing and the sea was very calm. SUNSET: A pleasing beachside photo.

WHEN YOU WRITE All letters, whether by email or post, should carry the writer’s postal address, NIE and contact number though only the name and town will be published. Letters may also be edited. Readers who have missed earlier correspondence can see all letters posted on:

Issue 1413). This trend started in the 80s with Andalucia workers wanting to enjoy a cheap drink outside instead of paying bar prices. In the 90s young people adopted it and it is now standard practice. I think they should provide an area away from residential homes so that they are not a nuisance. If they wanted to they could charge €2 for entry, which would then pay for the cleaning staff to clear up the mess the next day. Louise Linnen, Almeria

Bouncing back FOLLOWING the opening of a popular supermarket chain our two little shops in Javea and Benissa started to lose business. The town hall were not much help. Our prices have always been the best around as we have not got large

overheads. We have worked in our business for nearly 18 years and it upset us when suddenly we had to fight for our survival. The town hall employed an authoritarian policeman and in September alone we had three parking tickets for unloading our van and, as is usual, parking spaces disappeared in the village, and trees and paved areas were put in instead. This seems to be happening all around the Costa Blanca. I cannot understand their logic. They do not care for their local businesses. They only thing we could do, other than close, like the majority of little shops, was to move into our present premises and we have not looked back since, and with the help of our EWN advert we are definitely on the way up. Julie Day, by email

Helping hand I WOULD like to thank the EWN and Paul Deed for all their help prior to me opening my cancer research charity shop in La Nucia. The shop was empty with no sign of donations. Paul came along and took a picture of me with my empty shelves and did a piece about it in the paper. After it appeared in the paper (Issue 1408), the phone did not stop ringing and the shop was soon full. We are now due to open thanks to

9 - 15 August 2012 Costa de Almería the generous EWN readers. If the EWN and Paul had not come to my rescue, I fear the shop would never have opened. Gary Burr, Finestrat (Alicante)

Heartbreaking I KNOW hundreds of thousands of cows must be slaughtered in Spain, but I found the story on the 5,000 horses killed each month due to the crisis heartbreaking (Issue 1413). It is a shame there is such a long waiting list at animal charities. They do the best they can in difficult circumstances and really need all the help they can get from the public so they can help these animals. JB, Mojacar (Almeria)

Travel alert I WOULD advise passengers to keep hand luggage with them when travelling with a certain airline, especially if there are valuable items inside. My daughter was travelling with hand luggage only. Because the flight was full they offered to put her case through free of charge, which she did. When home, she found her case had been unzipped and a letter ripped open and the contents removed. Her make-up was tipped out and an expensive shaver taken. My neighbour has also had things removed from his case a few months ago and I had things taken from mine in January of this year.

L Grinyer, Cartama (Malaga)

Trade in trams I AGREE with Peter Wilkinson’s letter (27/7) concerning the ‘ill-conceived’ tramway of Velez Malaga and Torre del Mar where there are only 75,000 people. In Morocco, the recently opened tramway connecting Rabat and Sale serves a population well in excess of two million. The tramway under construction in Casablanca will serve in the region of six million people. I read recently that Velez were wondering what to do with the carriages. Perhaps they should try and sell them to the Casablanca Tram. Peter Sanderson, Estepona (Malaga)

Stolen plants TORREVIEJA Town Hall has spent time and money on improving the area in Calla Salinas, Los Balcones. It looks really good. They planted trees and plants and water them frequently but someone has already pinched four plants from opposite our home. What low-lifes! Barbara Dale, Torrevieja (Alicante)

Oddly, the Olympics keep getting their own back

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT

Good luck to Britain in winning more medals.

‘Hey Jude’ keeps rearing its annoying head. This song was the McCartney composition that kept me at number two in the British charts for 23 weeks and subsequently cost me a fortune. So all of you who wrote and gloated can gain even more satisfaction knowing this stroke of utter mistiming keeps coming back to haunt me.

OTHERS THINK IT

As this week’s final word on these glorious Games, I would like to add I have never been more delighted to be so utterly wrong and hope by the time you read this I will have been proven even more of a nit. As a final, final word, I still consider many of the events that have brought a whole swathe of medals, are not open to the hoi polloi, and are restricted to the privileged few and not as

accessible as they should be. Horse-riding, rowing and sailing, to name but a few. Another wonderful result this week was seeing those ‘parents from hell’* jailed for 25 years for the ‘honour’ murder of their beautiful 17year-old daughter. And what wonderful words from the judge when he told them, and I quote: ‘Shafilea was a determined, able and ambitious girl who wanted to live a life which was normal

in a country in which you had chosen to live and bring up your children. ‘However, you could not tolerate the life Shafilea wanted to live. Although she went to local schools you objected to her socialising with fellow white pupils. You objected to her wearing Western clothes and objected to her having contact with boys. You wanted your family to live in Pakistan in Warrington’. Well done, judge! Couldn’t have put it better myself! Keep the faith, Love Leapy. Leapylee2002@gmail.com *Iftikar and Farzana Ahmed, strict Muslims from Pakistan, were found guilty of the 2003 honour killing of their daughter Shafilea. They suffocated the 17-year-old in front of their four other children at their home in Warrington, Cheshire, after she rejected a forced marriage in Pakistan.

AN Italian man who told his cousin he had ‘no balls’ will now have to pay a fine. The judge has ruled that the insult had an ‘injurious quality’ to the male pride.

Bruce advice WORLD leaders should listen to Bruce Springsteen for economic advice, claims Australian Treasurer, Wayne Swan. He says the American rocker’s lyrics predict economic hardship way before economists pay attention.

Whale tale DON’T you hate it when you go for a swim only to find a dead 30-tonne whale in the pool? That’s what happened to Sydney swimmers last week, after heavy rain washed the sea creature inland.

WELL, now I know how Michael Fish felt. For those of you who don’t know who I’m referring to, Michael Fish was the TV weatherman who scornfully dismissed warnings that Britain was in the path of an approaching hurricane. The following day the whole country was flattened by the worst storm in living memory! My predictions for the Olympics were so akin to Mr Fish and so short of the mark I’m delighted! In my somewhat pathetic defence, however, I was referring mainly to track events and although I knew Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah were in with a chance, we didn’t have much more in the bag. Hopefully I’ll be proven wrong about that as well. Oddly, these Olympics do keep getting their own back.

Why are the British the butt of Olympic-size fitness jokes?

I

N a recent UK medical journal, the British were labelled one of the laziest populations in the world. Lazier even than the Americans, a nation not known for their love of walking. Anywhere. Twice as lazy as the French. More than 63 per cent of Brits fail to get off their butts to carry out the recommended 150 minutes of weekly activity needed to maintain basic good health. Now, why are the British less active as a nation? I’d say the weather has something to do with it. I mean, who really enjoys going for a nice jog in the rain or NORA JOHNSON snow? Then, there’s the Nora, who has lived on the Costa del Sol for a number of years, is the author of psychological distance to work, suspense and crime thrillers. invariably necessitating a bus, train or car journey. Labour-saving devices like washing machines from working longer hours and and lighter vacuum cleaners more days than anywhere else in play their part as well. Europe might have a lot to do And just being plain knackered with it, too!

RULE OF TV: A killer for the couch potato. But the killer? It’s got to be the TV. More than anything else, it welds a significant number of the population to the couch. Keeping up with the ‘soaps’ to be able to converse with peers. Or the latest reality/makeover show to see people cry because they’ve just sung for their sick mum, or

because they’re remembering their dead cats, or because they’ve just been made over by Gok. That such idleness results in sickness - often major health problems - isn’t surprising. It isn’t surprising either that it results in a massive load on the NHS and the Exchequer.

Now, I’m not suggesting Brits hurl themselves about like rippling-muscled Olympian athletes. On the contrary, an acquaintance has a couple of simple ‘rules’ he sticks to. He uses the car as little as possible. Once parked, the car stays parked. The rest is done on foot, by bike or public transport. He never take lifts or escalators where there are stairs. Oh, and he walks a couple of kilometres a day. No big deal, but he does it every day… and that’s what counts. So, you could be spending your next 20 years being spoon fed by a nurse after a massive stroke. Or, if you exercise, spend the next 20 years chasing the nurse at Bradley Wiggins-speed around the front room. Your choice!

Heard of the Forsyth Code? CATHERINE DE MEDICI had a penchant for indiscriminate destruction and being a member of one of Renaissance Italy’s most powerful families, she was permitted to indulge in her chosen hobby with abandon. The Medicis were at various times either in cahoots with or directly opposed to that other powerful family, the Borgias, well known for their desire for political and papal power at any cost. It was said that Lucrezia Borgia’s poisoning skills were second to none and that while her brother Cesare was off causing mayhem and terror in France she was happily despatching her own enemies with a nice cup of tea and a side of arsenic. An invite to dine at the Borgias was greeted with as much dismay and trepidation as a summons to ‘discuss’ your overdraft with the bank (although death by fiscal ineptitude is probably more painful than death by poisoning). While Catherine de Medici was encouraging lithe

Suzanne Manners Suzanne has a degree in Fine Art from Goldsmiths and an MA in Writing from Lancaster University. She is currently teaching in Alicante and writing a book for teenagers (which doesn’t have a vampire as its central character).

Leonardo da Vinci is now more famous for a code he never wrote. young artists and having an allegedly thoroughly debauched time of it, Lucrezia was bemoaning the fact that no one ever RSVP’d. Perhaps at this point her father (the Pope) should have taken her to one side and explained the cause and effect ratio of her arsenic habit: “Now

look here, little miss serial killer,” he may have said, “you’re not going to find a husband if you keep poisoning everyone within range. So get a grip and pour me a goblet of wine from the interesting looking bottle with the skull and crossbones label.”

Thankfully life has moved on and the Renaissance has been relegated to a room at the National Gallery and interminable lectures in front of a flock of bored-looking art students. Leonardo da Vinci is now more famous for a code he never wrote and is probably spinning in his tomb as hordes of bespectacled, socks and sandals wearing geeks, brandishing copies of Dan Brown’s oddly hysterical (as opposed to historical) book, attempt to erase layers of priceless pigment in the hope of discovering the truth about Christ. I can imagine Da Vinci, hands on hips, calmly yet forcefully explaining that the ‘Last Supper’ is actually a representation of the Last Supper. For the most part things really are what they seem. Close study of Machiavelli’s ‘The Prince’ would have afforded those desperate

conspiracy theorists a little insight into the workings of the political mind; he suggested that rumour and supposition and whispered threat of treason and espionage were cunning devices to divide and occupy an enemy that would have been spending far too much time planning and preparing for attack. The illusionist’s skill at distraction was one that Machiavelli felt all great men must master, that and the ability to snatch a coin from thin air and drink a casket of wine without falling over. Whether the stories about Catherine de Medici and Lucrezia Borgia were true, the fact remains that they and many other historically peripheral women were responsible for the patronage of great artists like Michelangelo and Bellini. It is quite likely that Catherine was the poster girl for sobriety and celibacy and Lucrezia was just a really bad cook. Oh, and have you noticed that the second figure to the left of Christ looks like Bruce Forsyth? Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Eat like a champion

We don’t say we are number 1, our customers do

WITH a certain international sporting event in full swing, health websites have been abuzz with advice on how to eat like an Olympian. British Olympic swimmer Gemma Spofforth has revealed she cuts out sugar prior to an event, and abstained from chocolate, ice cream and sweets prior to setting a world record in 2009. Meanwhile, taekwondo competitor Jade Jones swears by protein bars to supplement her diet. As well as helping her post-training recovery, this helps to keep her feeling fuller longer. Doctors do not recommend trying the Olympic rowing team diet, however. A heavyweight rower has to consume around 6,000 calories a day, more than twice the recommended daily allowance. This includes breakfast, second breakfast, lunch, post-training snack, dinner and a bedtime snack, as well as various sports drinks during training.

BALANCED DIET: Athletes have various eating regimes.

Could perfume provide sweet smell of dieting success? BIKINI season is upon us, but is there a way to get the body beautiful without giving up croquetas and cañas? It seems that a solution may be at hand… French cosmetics company Velds has launched a perfume that claims to help weight loss. Prends-moi was

apparently created following extensive ‘aromatherapeutic’ and ‘neurocosmetic’ research. Independent tests showed that 75 per cent of women felt the perfume limited their need to snack and 73 per cent said they felt a feeling of pleasure after using it. Statistics do not make clear how much weight the women lost. Some have been sceptical of the claims, including Dr Kim BellAnderson from the University of Sydney who told the Sydney Morning Herald that there were ‘absolutely no peer reviewed publications to support

CLAIM: Perfume limits need to snack. this product’. The perfume does not appear to be available in

Spain as yet, but is available online for less than €40.

Sunscreen dilemma: To use or not to use? COULD you be using too much sun cream?, The Telegraph asked last week. While sunscreen is important in preventing skin cancer, The Telegraph points out that vitamin D, which our bodies produce from sunlight, is good for our health.

The NHS suggests spending 1015 minutes in the sun without sunscreen every day to get the correct amount of the sunshine vitamin. However, with skin cancer on the increase, Cancer Research UK urges the public to stay safe.

Ex-AIDS sufferer ‘cured’ TIMOTHY RAY BROWN, also known as ‘The Berlin Patient’, addressed the media in Washington DC recently as doctors announced that he was “cured of AIDS and will remain cured.” Brown underwent a stem cell transplant of his immune system, using cells from a donor who was genetically immune to the HIV virus. He was diagnosed with HIV in 1995 and was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2006. After trying chemotherapy unsuccessfully, in 2007 his doctors suggested the new treatment. He has not taken his HIV medication since the day of the transplant. Since then, he has become a figure of inspiration to AIDS sufferers around the world, and has established a new foundation in his name. However, Steven Yuki, part of a team who claimed at International Workshop on HIV and Hepatitis Virus in Sitges, Spain in June, claims they might have found some of the virus still in his body. Brown is adamant that any remnants of the virus are dead and cannot replicate, declaring: “Let me be clear. I am HIVnegative.” Doctors say the case is highly unusual, and may not lead to a widelyavailable cure, due to danger, expense and the scarcity of stem cell donors with the necessary gene mutation. On his blog Brown remains optimistic, saying: “My dream is to not be the man who stands before you and says ‘I am cured’, but to be the man who stands before you and says ‘We are cured’.”

Storm over treatment for chronic fatigue syndrome CONTROVERSY raged over a study claiming that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) was the most costeffective way to treat chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). The study examined the costeffectiveness of different treatments for sufferers of the illness, which affects between 120,000 and 200,000 people in Spain. It found that there was a roughly 63 per cent chance that CBT would be the best choice, graded exercise therapy was ranked second at just over 25 per cent, while pacing (avoiding overexertion) scored only 2.6 per cent. Professor Paul McCrone, lead author of the study, said: “Investment would be justified in terms of improving quality of life for patients and could actually save costs to society if the impact on family members is taken into account.” However, The ME Association (which represents UK sufferers) was critical of the findings. Spokesman Dr Charles Shepherd said that the results “do not match

the feedback that we consistently receive from people with ME and CFS.” He argued that ME and chronic fatigue syndrome were umbrella terms for a variety of problems, and could not be prescribed a uniform treatment. He also alleged that those who prescribe CBT falsely believe that there is no physiological problem behind these illnesses and that “symptoms are largely maintained by abnormal illness beliefs.” The ME Association pointed to their own surveys, where over 50 per cent of patients found CBT made no difference, exercise caused over half to get worse, while 70 per cent felt pacing had a positive effect.

DIFFERENCE OF OPINION: Experts split over best treatment for CFS.

Pessimists right all along?

NEGATIVE THINKING: Embrace pessimism as a route to happiness.

A RECENTLY-PUBLISHED book explores the power of negative thinking and promotes the idea of embracing failure and pessimism as a route to happiness. Unlike many self-help books, ‘The Antidote: Happiness for people who can’t stand positive thinking’ argues that we spend so much time trying to be happy, that it is actually making us miserable. Instead, author Oliver Burkeman adopts a technique known as ‘negative path’, which promotes thinking that however bad things are, they could always be worse. In the course of his research he attends a motivation seminar (headed by George W Bush), tries his hand at meditation and pretends to be mad on a train.

Tried all the diets? Did none of them work for you? Do you need professional help? We know that losing weight is only half the battle. Keeping it off long term is what really matters. With its unique one-to-one support, Cambridge 800 is the nutritional, convenient and proven way to lose weight.

T Restaurant El Mar La Mar, Villaricos, they care. Their excellent food is prepared using the highestquality ingredients. Owner-chef Richard Shepherd only uses fully certified sustainable produce. He downright refuses to work with inferior food such as Panga (Vietnamese river cobbler). “There’s such a great selection of local produce here. Why buy fish from Vietnam?” El Mar La Mar swears by their policy of working with and supporting local suppliers. Richard Shepherd and his team simply do not cut corners when it comes to quality and customer service. Ever. Quite the opposite. They go just that little bit further to make sure you are happy and well-fed, while still managing to keep prices affordable. Richard knows that being hands-on and honest in all aspects, is key to business success. He’s proud of his team, and feels they are probably the best El Mar La Mar has ever had. Two previous team members have recently returned, too. They all work really hard together, to maintain the restaurant’s superior standards, creating a pleasant environment, clearly apparent

friendly, tasteful sea-view restaurant in Villaricos. We all know times are hard. El Mar La Mar strives to serve the very best, lovingly-prepared meals on a sensible budget. There really is no other seafront restaurant in the area offering such an honestly good set menu for 12€. Goat’s cheese and almond salad with beetroot

Customers say this is the very best place to eat in the Costa de Almeria, all things considered. “The Mar, in El Mar La Mar, is clearly an abbreviation for Marvellous. This is the only word that reflects the wonderful food, excellent service and value for money delivered by Richard, Louisa and the team. “Once again we have been made to feel like family to them,” commented one customer just a few days ago, on the TripAdvisor international website. Another diner said the restaurant is “still one of the best” and that it catered really well for their “awkward vegetarian.” The only advice customers give is to book ahead whenever possible, especially on Sundays. Richard says a huge thank you to Louisa, Jonny, Leanne, Christina, José, Carmen and Natasha and, of course, to you, his valued customers, without whom “none of us would have jobs.”

Time Out The ultimate in accessories

10-star quiz

BOOKS

Drama, Romance

THE story starts in Manhattan. Blue (Bluebell) Byrne works in New York fashion marketing, and needs the ultimate in accessories - a bitchproof suit. She had it made by bespoke tailors, cut with precision for sheer cutting edge class. Blue is sent on a top fashion marketing assignment - to work in Dublin, Ireland. She sets off for Dublin. It’s the one place she swore she’d never

LEO (July 24 - August 23) Looking for answers? They are there if only you go to the right source. There is no 'quick fix' this week and you need to delve deeper to get the information you need. It will be tempting to take a short cut but, believe me, it will not be worth the hassle in the longer term. Once you have the right facts you are truly in charge of what happens next.

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23)

IF ITʼS YOUR BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK:

Taking a more forceful approach with an authority figure will work only in short bursts. Nagging on and on won't, but you do need to get your point across.

so much easier.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23)

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21)

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) The thing that you have to tackle this week is uppermost in your mind, but don't dwell on it. Write it down and what you intend doing about it, then put it away. Relax and get on with other things. When you do come to take it out again and face the situation it will be

You are very much in two minds about how to deal with a personal situation. Ask yourself which approach will help and which will do nothing to help at all. Although you want to shout at someone and feel negative at times, hold fire.

Getting a romantic situation wrong could cause a humourous moment this weekend. I am not telling you this so you can avoid it. You could do with a good laugh right now. Planning ahead is your preferred method but sometimes it is the last-minute decision that brings the best results.

books@euroweeklynews.com

Imposing restrictions on someone else also imposes restrictions on you. Why? Well, you have to hang around and see that your wishes are followed and take further action if they are not. Wouldn't it be easier to find some kind of compromise?

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Avoid getting involved in other people's arguments. There is no way that you can come out a winner if you do. Taking a step backwards is sometimes the best thing. You have been down this path before, and did your intervention do any good? Go and trim the roses or sort out those rockery stones instead.

Antonio Banderas,

Born in Malaga on August 10, 1960, he is a famous actor, producer, director and singer. His full name is Jose Antonio Dominguez Banderas, although he took his motherʼs surname for the stage when he joined a theatre troupe, beginning an acting career that would lead him to be one of the best known Spanish actors in the world. Although he is a self-declared agnostic, he visits his home town to participate in Easter processions every year.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19)

ARIES (March 21 - April 20)

The need to be popular midweek could see you veer off track on a business matter. You have been warned and will be able to avoid it if you wish. Do not underestimate how much hassle a wrong move could cause you. On the domestic front, you are able to fully relax and enjoy good company.

Having been dashing about like a mad thing, you find this week a refreshing change. Only when you slow down do you realise how much you have been doing and just how tired you have become. There are some social engagements that you would not miss for the world, however.

PISCES (February 20 - March 20)

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21)

As someone is not showing the required amount of interest in your activities, you need a plan. Telephoning them and pointing out what you have achieved is one way, but it's not cool. Getting a few people together and using someone else to blow your trumpet for you is better.

By using your intuition midweek, you will be able to solve a small problem at the weekend. Thinking ahead sometimes seems a waste of time to you because circumstances have a way of changing, but it makes sense to put in a bit of extra effort if you are able to avoid aggravation.

GEMINI (May 22 - June 21)

Just joking “Do you believe in life after death?” A boss asked one of his employees. “Actually, I do,” replied the subordinate. “Well, so do I,” the boss went on. “Because after you left early yesterday to go to your grandmother’s funeral, she stopped in to see you.”

A mistake seems a small thing until someone notices it. Although you feel that they are making a mountain out of a molehill, it still leaves a nasty feeling. Get out and do something completely different at the weekend. Not only will it blow the cobwebs away, but it will also put in perspective any negative thoughts.

SU DOKU HOW TO PLAY Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3X3 box contains the digits 1-9. There’s no maths involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23)

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

A business colleague may be less than honest with you. When it is a small matter you are used to them bending the truth. This is not, however, something that you will want to let go by, so stay on your toes. On the home front, you tend to be snappy with loved ones because you are feeling stressed.

SPORTS BAR: There’s free WiFi at the Millionaire Sports Bar & Café near Garrucha in Vera Playa. Advertising Feature

More than just sport at The Millionaire RIGHT in front of one of the best bits of the Garrucha-Vera beach is one of the best sports bar cafés in the Costa de Almeria, The Millionaire. Neither owner Colin nor chef Krasi has raked in their first million yet. Hardly surprising, really. The generous-sized delicious homemade dishes they serve don’t give much scope for huge profits. Lasagnes, curries, jacket potatoes and tasty chilli are just a few of the old favourites on the menu. You definitely won’t go away hungry, but you’ll very likely soon be back for more. The café’s all-day English breakfasts are hearty and inexpensive, and you really shouldn’t go home without trying the ‘Millionaire Sandwich’ wrap. The Millionaire Sports Bar and Café is the place to watch the Olympics, football, tennis and other SKY Sports programmes.

SEA VIEW: The bar is right on the promenade. The fun poker meetings on Wednesdays and Sundays are a popular way to make new friends. There are very few other places nearby to enjoy Guinness, Strongbow and other British favourites from 10am until late. The local beer is cold and good, but sometimes only the best of British or Irish will do.

Colin and his bilingual team will take good care of you, your family and friends at their beachfront oasis. They’ve been living and working in the area for years and know what’s what, so feel free to grill them. The Millionaire’s large terrace with shady and sunny spots is the ideal meeting place before or after the beach, and children are welcomed with open arms. There’s a full freezer of ice-creams and some yummy desserts, too. Be warned, though, the lumpy-bumpy and apple crumble have got many locals addicted. You can walk to the Millionaire from Las Buganvillas or Garrucha, and even Puerto Rey if you’re feeling up to it. With so many police patrolling the roads in the high season, that’s a selling point in itself. Don’t be fooled. Times have changed. Licensing laws are just as strict in Spain as in the UK and other countries.

HANUMAN Music Beach Club on Mojacar Playa opened on June 1. It is a beach bar and club with a difference. From 7pm until shortly after midnight the atmosphere is relaxing, with ambient background music, and therefore appealing to all ages. After midnight things start to hot-up, with dance music, top DJs, bar shows and lots more. Hanuman is new to Mojacar and strives to go just a bit further to provide fun and memorable nights out for both tourists and locals. One important point making them stand out from the rest is that they have done away with disorganised queues at the bar. They have personalised waiter service both inside,

where you will be impressed by their select Indian-style décor, and on their fantastic seaview terrace. The waiters and waitresses even prepare your cocktails and specialised gins right in front of you, at your table. Try their Arab-style Shisha smoking pipes that come in a range of flavours if you feel like adding a bit of spice to your night. Contrary to popular belief, these exotic looking ‘bomb’ pipes are not drugs but vaporised pure tobacco. Up until midnight you can chill out, chat, meet new friends and simply enjoy Hanuman’s uniqueness in its entirety. If you decide to make a night of it, you’ll be pleased to hear that the

bar stays open until 3am during the week and 4am on Fridays and Saturdays, (an hour later than other Mojacar bars). Its modern terrace right in front of the sea is the perfect place to get a breath of fresh air between dancing. August is party-month with five Djs hosting their ‘Fun Parties’ on Saturday 11 and 25. On Tuesday August 14 there’s a ‘Musica Electronica’, party and every Friday there’s ‘Flower Power’, starting at 10pm. Hanuman isn’t just a summer hangout, though. They organise stag and hen parties, special events, model shows and more throughout the year so watch this space or call Miguel on 654 036 359 for reservations.

EASTERN PROMISE: Hanuman is opposite Lua in Mojacar.

A triumph for PAWS By Bill White and Michael Palmer AT one stage it was a concert heading for disaster. Billed as a quiet classical guitar recital to raise money for PAWS, one of the two guitarists, Robin Wright, damaged his wrist two days before and couldn’t take part. Then the transport bringing the second guitarist, Spanish maestro Pedro Clemente, broke down. Yet three hours later the evening, held in the courtyard of the Villa Lamayuru, ended in a resounding triumph, a standing ovation from a packed audience and just over €2,000 raised for the animal charity. The surprise ingredient was an unplanned, impromptu performance by members of the Budapest Conservatoire, who happened to be

staying with host Robert Barlow. From the start there was a party atmosphere as the audience mingled in the delightful surroundings of the courtyard and balconies of this amazing house. Guests were able to relax with drinks and canapés setting the scene for a most memorable evening. Pedro Clemente is an accomplished, classicallytrained guitarist, and everyone was held spellbound as Pedro played with sensitivity and solemnity one minute and climatic gusto the next, teasing our emotions to the limit. He mixed his programme well with some very flamboyant flamenco, and even tossed in a couple of crowd-pleasers like the lyrical rendering of Paul McCartney’s ‘Yesterday’. The courtyard of Lamayuru provides an absolutely perfect setting for this kind of intimate music. And it proved equally adaptable when the pianist and opera singers of the Budapest Conservatoire offered to supplement the shortened programme. This began with a piece by Schubert expertly played on the grand piano, then from above us came the voice of an angel as one of the sopranos sang from the gallery. Solos and duets were sung from the balcony of the main house overlooking the courtyard and the evening concluded with a haunting rendition of Verdi’s Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves. It was a triumph from unlikely beginnings, and proof (if any were needed) that everything comes to those who wait. We have been asked to thank the Voices of Almanzora for the generous loan of equipment, especially the Walkie-Talkies. Robert Barlow may find himself receiving approaches from other musicians wanting to perform in such a beautiful setting.

All stock is readily available, with some items flatpacked or for a small charge, delivered and assembled. A keen swimmer!

I

recently came across an interesting article written by Andrew Linn on the importance of dental hygiene for dogs. As the once-owner of a Yorkshire that died because of internal complications originally caused by a mouth infection (as is often the case with this breed), I have since been scrupulous about keeping my dogs’ teeth clean. Although it is not the most pleasant task in the world, taking the trouble to sit down with your dog on your lap and clean its teeth with a toothbrush and doggies’ toothpaste will usually ensure it lives longer. Having two dogs and getting lazier as I get older, I thought of using an electric toothbrush for the job, as I personally use one (not the same brush though...). Much to my surprise and my vet’s when I told him about it - the noise

Chillaxed THIS is my Fox Terrier Rosie, who likes nothing better than to swim a length of the pool and then stand on the step chilling out! Dogs prefer an electric toothbrush to manual scrubbing. does not appear to upset the dogs and I would even say they prefer to have their teeth cleaned by the less vigorous use of a small circulating brush, rather than the energetic motions normally necessary with a manual version. I started with a €5 battery-powered brush, which lasted for three months on two AA batteries, but have now upgraded to a more expensive rechargeable version. For dog-owners who may have been put off cleaning their pets’ teeth by the possible stress and effort involved, an electric

toothbrush is the answer. Do your dog a favour, he or she cannot clean its own teeth and whatever they say on the pack of those chews you can buy, only a toothbrush gets into every corner of the mouth.

Impact on environment from ‘cradle to grave’

LIFE CYCLE: Range Rover Evoque passes environmental study.

AND ROVER has received certification from the VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency) for a comprehensive ‘cradle-tograve’ study which analyses the environmental impact of its new Range Rover Evoque. The life cycle assessment (LCA) of the Range Rover Evoque was fully audited and approved by the VCA, making Land Rover one of only a few vehicle manufacturers to have completed an officially

EWN

recognised study of the environmental impact of a vehicle - from manufacturing, through a lifetime of customer use, to ultimate disposal and recycling. The report highlights many of the processes that make the Range Rover Evoque the brand's lightest and most efficient vehicle to date. These include the use of recycled materials, lightweight components and stop start

technology. In addition, the ventilation systems in body construction have been rationalised, giving a 25 per cent reduction in electricity consumption. The study will enable Land Rover to identify more opportunities to improve the sustainability of their vehicles in the future, and highlights JLR's progress in reducing the carbon footprint of its products.

S tronic twin-clutch makes gear shifting even quicker

A

UDI has incorporated faster S tronic twin-clutch sports transmission and new lighter and more powerful V10 models for the 2013 Model Year Revisions. The totally new seven-speed S tronic transmission replaces the R tronic automated manual option in the latest R8 range, delivering blink-of-an-eye gear shifts and improved sprinting ability. The update is available as an alternative to the acclaimed six-speed manual gearbox with its open stainless steel gate, which continues to be offered for all versions in the UK. The twin-clutch S tronic transmission can make its rapid fire shifts via the selector lever or the steering wheel paddles. It offers a sports mode that adjusts the shift pattern to extract the very best from the V8 and V10 engines, and a launch control function that manages engine speed and permits exactly the right degree of tyre slip for the quickest possible take-off when accelerating. A subtle yet significant change can be noted in the R8’s style. Its single-frame grille is a new design with bevelled upper corners and horizontal chrome inserts adorning the struts on the V10 variants. The bumper is

LED head and tail-lights are complemented by the innovative new indicators which appear to perform a ‘sweeping’ movement which makes them even more noticeable.

Audi's wealth of expertise in ultra-lightweight design is evident considering the aluminium Coupé body with the Audi Space Frame (ASF) weighs just 210 kg, and the Spyder body 216 kg. OTR prices range from £91,575 to £127,575 (€117,000 to €162,995) and may be ordered beginning of next month with deliveries in early 2013.

THERE is so much to discover in this region and we at 4x4 Spain never tire of exploring. On one of our safari day trips you can experience the lost and hidden corners of Almeria where a few kilometres’ journey can encompass centuries of diverse history and influence evident in the castles, towers, abandoned mines and holy buildings; even the farmed terrain has history dating back to 5000BC. With our specialised Land Rovers built to cope with the rugged, everchanging terrain, we allow our customers to travel the old packhorse routes and take a peek at the traditional Spain with its hidden villages, isolated hamlets and cave houses still occupied to

this day. The mountain ranges reach up to 2,080 metres with breathtaking vistas and are in vast contrast to the dry river beds and rock gorges. Each trip has something different to offer, from a walk through an old mining gorge, a soak in the thermal pools, to simply sitting and watching the world go by. Our meandering pace in quiet and remote areas allows the keen-eyed to spot the varied wildlife. All safaries come with stop-off points to stretch legs, take photos or swap seats and where possible take coffee and tapas at a traditional bar. Whether you are a couple celebrating, a party adventuring or

a family exploring, we have gained extensive knowledge of the local area and compiled a variety of trips to engage and entertain everyone. We also provide one to one offroad tutorials and tailored routes to suit the self-drive 4x4 enthusiasts. Throughout summer as well as being open for bookings we are arranging some scheduled dates for our most popular outings, also adding evening routes to enjoy the sunsets and cool air of the mountains with a return under the stars. Huercal Overa CF 2-3 UD Almeria B THE future is looking bright for Huercal Overa CF after playing UD Almeria B (who play in the Segunda B division) at the Desert Springs Resort on last Thursday. Almeria took the lead after 10 minutes through a well worked move. Not long after this, they scored a second from the penalty spot. Huercal Overa then put in some good attacking runs down either flank, one of which resulted in a free kick roughly 30 yards out. A good ball was played into the box and a knock down was met by Tomas Campanas to fire home. Almeria took the 2-1 lead into the break and in the second half Huercal Overa were awarded their

From the 30th minute of the first half and the majority of the second, Huercal Overa were playing on equal terms against a strong Almeria side.
