Voetbal toer-
Op 19 en 21 oktober worden wedstrijden gespeeld in het kader van een vanuit Nederland georganiseerd zaal voetbal toernooi. Natuurlijk hebben we meer info in deze uitgave.
Bataan in Meer dan drieduizend Amerikaanse Mariniers bezochten Salou en omgeving nadat hun vliegdekschip, de USS Bataan in de haven van Tarragona was afgemeerd. Dat betekende natuurlijk feest.
Met de herfstvakantie voor de deur leek het ons een goed idee om de puzzel en jokes pagina’s uit te breiden. Je weet maar nooit in deze tijd van het jaar, wellicht is het eens geen mooi weer. Dan hoef je je met deze pagina’s bij de hand niet te vervelen.

USS Bataan in Salou
Het zit er weer op
Het is alweer 2 jaar geleden dat de USS JF Kennedy zich hier meldde en met meer dan 6000 opvarenden voor een aardige drukte zorgde in Salou en omgeving. Nu was het dus de beurt aan de USS Bataan. Met meer dan 3000 opvarenden ook geen kleintje. En deze keer waren we er op tijd bij
Dit is ‘m dan de laatste Eurotourist van 1999. Natuurlijk zijn we er in 2000 ook weer bij. Maar nu gaan we eerst de winterstop in om dan straks weer fris en hopelijk met een nog beter produkt in april te verschijnen. Terugkijkend op het afgelopen seizoen kunnen we niet anders constateren dan dat het best wel goed is gegaan. Veel drukker dan het jaar ervoor en weinig echte problemen.
Voetbal in Salou In deze uitgave van Eurotourist kun je alles vernemen betreffende het zaalvoetbaltoernooi dat tijdens de herfstvakantie hier in Salou zal worden gehouden. Zoals jullie kunnen zien is Nikki er ook klaar voor. dus dat betekende vanaf de eerste dag veel Amerikaanse mariniers in Salou. Snoepy’s was natuurlijk torenhoog favoriet vooral bij de jonge opvarenden van de USS Bataan. De officieren hadden het vooral naar hun zin in Charlie Chaplins.
Groeten uit salou Tijdens de op vrijdag 15 oktober georganiseerde Salou reünie, waaraan o.a ”De Prins van Oranje” en ”‘t Gat van Nederland” meewerken zal de nieuwe CD ”groeten uit Salou deel II” officieel worden geïntroduceerd.
Er is er een jarig... Onlangs waren wij uitgenodigd op de verjaardag van Maria. Maria werd 30 jaar. Dat was dus taart en champagne. Maria werkt in restaurant Bei Claus. Natuurlijk wensen wij Maria nog vele jaartjes toe in gezondheid.
Nu de dagen weer korter worden worden de nachten weer langer. Dat betekent natuurlijk meer party time. Tot en met 30 oktober kan dat nog uitstekend bij Discotheek Snoepy’s. Zijn vele collega discotheken al dicht gegaan, zoniet Snoepy’s. Traditioneel de discotheek bij uitstek voor de Nederlanders in Salou. Op 30 oktober nodigt Hilario, dat is de sympathieke eigenaar van Snoepy’s, iedereen uit op een drankje van het huis, spreekt voor zich dat de entree ook gratis is die laatste avond.
Natuurlijk wensen wij iedereen, en in het bijzonder onze trouwe adverteerders, zonder welke het niet mogelijk zou zijn om deze magazines boordevol met belangrijke informatie betreffende Salou en omgeving te vervaardigen, het allerbeste toe en hopen dat we iedereen weer gezond en wel in 2000 mogen terugzien. or o t s a P Jean Zo, dit is’m dan, het GOUD is grotendeels verdeeld en de KUST is nagenoeg leeg. Aan mij om de laatste GOUDKUST aan het papier toe te vertrouwen. Ik doe dit met plezier en tegenzin. Met plezier omdat ik het enorm leuk vond om te doen en met tegenzin omdat het de laatste is. Het is, zoals de meesten zullen hebben ervaren, een iets andere rubriek geworden dan het jaar ervoor, hetgeen ik in april ook had beloofd. Ook de sceptici onder de lezers zullen dit moeten toegeven. Wij, van de EUROTOURIST, hebben tot nu toe alleen maar positieve reacties op de artikelen en het gehele blad vernomen en dat geeft de burger weer moed en energie om nu al reeds aan volgend jaar te denken en te werken. Nieuw was ook de Spaanstalige rubriek, hetgeen tot gevolg had, dat ons blad ook onder de Spaans sprekenden werd verdeeld en er ook Spaanse ondernemers gingen adverteren, hetgeen voor iedereen goed is. Hoe het blad er volgend jaar gaat uitzien weten wij nog niet, maar er komt zeker weer een GOUDKUST, in welke vorm?? Git, Han, Chris, Elly en Sue, Willy en Natascha, Babette, Peter en Edwin, William, Maarten, Nino, Eric, Dinny, bedankt voor jullie welwillendheid en tijd. Zonder jullie had ik deze Goudkusten niet op deze manier kunnen invullen. Git ( Koko’s) is met iets bezig wat ik niet mag vertellen maar dat merkt men hier van de winter wel. Han (Hippoos/Time Out) gaat de komende maanden nadenken over zijn nieuwe zaak. Voor geinteresseerden, een van zijn huidige zaken wil hij wegdoen. Info 629012425. Chris (Werken in Spanje) gaat eerst vakantie vieren na een vermoeiende zomer en wat het volgend jaar gaat brengen kon hij nog niet vertellen. Elly en Sue (Bei Claus) blijven met hun gezellige zaak van de winter open. Voor de juiste dagen en tijden kunt u het beste even bij hun binnenwippen. Willy en Natascha (Knabbel en Babbel) hebben het ook dit jaar behoorlijk druk gehad en weten nog niet wat de winter gaat brengen. Open of dicht, we zullen het ongetwijfeld snel merken. Babette (Solmar) zal ongetwijfeld van een welverdiende vakantie gaan genieten en verder nadenken over een eventuele mogenlijkheid voor een kinderopvang. William (Bruintje Beer) Voor hem was het het eerste jaar met een zaak in Salou. Hij gaat
van de winter naar zijn gezin in Holland en planningen maken voor het volgend jaar. Maarten (Snoeyink enz.) en Peter (Mooi Sikke/Peter Langhout) gaan een beetje afkoelen en in Andorra werken. Peters partner Edwin denkt erover om richting Oostenrijk te vertrekken voor een paar maanden, maar het kan ook dat hij een geheel andere richting uitgaat. Wij zien wel waar het kerstkaartje vandaan komt. Nino (Yogiburger /Saloon) zal de winter gebruiken om zijn gezin wat meer aandacht te geven nu daar tijd voor is. Zeker is dat hij een ,al een tijdje geleden naar zijn vrouw gedane, belofte gaat verwezenlijken. Thuis de keuken verbouwen. Dinny (Heineken Hoek en meer) gaat ongetwijfeld een verre reis maken, maar kan niet stilzitten, dus......???? Jongelui, want dat zijn jullie voor mij allemaal, ik denk dat veel mensen van jullie ondervindingen best wel iets hebben kunnen opsteken. Al is het alleen maar dat men begrijpt dat het gewoon keihard werken is tijdens het seizoen en dat een deel van de winter wordt gebruikt om het volgende jaar te plannen en/of voor te bereiden. Ik hoop jullie volgend jaar allemaal weer in goede gezondheid tegen te komen, in welke zaak of hoedanigheid dan ook. Voor mij was het een hele ervaring om , met Frank en Nikki aan dit blad te werken. Wij kenden elkaar en toch niet en voor mij was het de eerste maal dat ik mij in de journalistieke wereld stortte, maar ja, je bent nooit “te oud” om te leren. Een blad maken is niet: advertenties verkopen, stukjes schrijven, of een beetje computeren en daarna lekker de hele zomer op een terrasje zitten. Nee, daar komt iets meer bij kijken. Elke keer weer een verrassing wat er nu weer zou gebeuren. Trouwens over verrassingen gesproken. Wat vindt u ervan als u op een donderdag een BMW 318I, rood van kleur en voorzien van het kenteken, T-5713-AB koopt en deze binnen 2x 24 uur weer wordt gejat? Juist, zo reageerde ik ook. Het is nml. mijn auto, dus als u hem ergens mocht zien of weten waar hij utihangt, hoor ik dat graag van u. Zoals u nu begrijpt waren mijn ritjes op de fiets een beetje noodgedwongen en niet omdat ik opeens zo sportief was. Hoe dan ook, ik heb het weer over onze EUROTOURIST, 2x per maand kwam ie uit, zoals beloofd. Wat
mij betreft is het enorm goed bevallen en gaan wij gezamenlijk de nieuwe eeuw in. Geen vakantie dus naar Eindhoven of Benidorm, maar gewoon niet uit Salou weg te branden. Goed, iedereen gaat denk ik een beetje zijn of haar zomer evalueren om er volgend jaar weer tegenaan te gaan, of niet. Ik in ieder geval wel. Buiten mijn redactionele werk om is een aantal geplande dingen voor mij niet doorgegaan, dus dan pak je iets anders aan., met het risico of dat wel of niet lukt. Als je het niet probeert, zul je nooit weten of het gelukt zou zijn, of niet. Enkele bedrijven gingen vroegtijdig, vrijwillig of noodgedwongen dicht, om welke reden dan ook. Dit jaar was er in de horeca in Spanje een gigantisch personeelsgebrek. Velen verkeken zich op de werkdruk en trokken het niet een heel seizoen. Daarbij komt dat er in de bouw ook een personeelstekort was en velen hebben het dienblad of keukenmes geruild voor een hamer of troffel. Ook moesten er enkele zaken midden in het seizoen dicht vanwege een enorme brand in de C/lle Andora. CHAPEAU voor de ondernemers die binnen ongelooflijk korte tijd hun bedrijf weer open hadden. Ook zijn er enkele zaken van eigenaar veranderd en dat zal ook volgend jaar weer het geval zijn. Ondernemers die er, om welke reden dan ook, de brui aan gaven of iets anders, of groter wilden. Mocht u willen weten wat er zoal in de verkoop/verhuur is of komt,of wilt u niet dezelfde personeelsproblemen hebben als dit jaar, kijk dan even bij de pagina met zoekertjes, of bel gerust 629012425 en misschien kunnen wij u helpen. Het is zo weer Pasen en waarom wachten? The early bird catches te worm, zoals de Fransen zeggen. Trouwens wat ik begrepen heb, blijven of gaan er behoorlijk wat zaken de gehele winter open. Er is nog een groot zaalvoetbaltoernooi, een internationaal schaaktoernooi en steeds meer mensen willen de stad niet verlaten, om eens gezellig uit te gaan. Ook enkele Spaanse zaken zijn voornemens hun deuren in de winter enkele dagen per week open te houden. Niet verkeerd dus om ook na het seizoen open te zijn, zij het dan met iets andere openingstijden. Mocht u van de winter iets van plan zijn, sla even tegen de klepel en wij hangen het graag voor u aan de grote klok.Onze planning is om gewoon door te gaan, zij het in iets andere vorm. Wij zijn zowiezo hier om voorbereidingen te treffen voor het seizoen 2000. Op het laatste moment alles regelen heeft geen zin. Ik eindig met een opmerking die ik ook in de eerste Goudkust en wel vaker gebruik, nml. dat ik u allen het dubbele toewens van hetgeen u mij en de mijnen toewenst. Het ga u goed, voor wat betreft GOUDKUST tot volgend jaar maar tot die tijd ben ik gewoon in Salou of telefonisch bereikbaar voor ideeen of vragen. Hola a todos los amigos de nuestra revista y en especial a los mañicos-as, que en estos días han celebrado “Las Fiestas de la Virgen del Pilar”. Todo español que se aprecie por serlo, tiene que ir a Zaragoza y visitar la Basílica “De La Virgen del Pilar” y yo como tal he ido varias veces, pero la primera vez reconozco que fue la más especial, el impacto de los sentimientos propios y de otros seres, conocidos o no, fue sensacional. La Asociación Cultural Aragonesa en Salou, eligieron a Esmeralda Orte Lainez como reina de las Fiestas, una preciosa jovencita de dieciséis años, nacida en Zaragoza y que desde que tenía tres años de edad, reside en Salou. Este año y como en los anteriores, nuestro alcalde y el presidente de la Asociación Arago-nesa, han puesto todas sus ilusiones y expectativas, a organizar unas inmejorables Fiestas, por aquello que ya tanto escuchamos en estos días: “Las últimas del Milenio”, de todas formas estoy super segura, que las próximas, aunque parezca imposible, aun serán mejores y así sucesivamente, año tras año con ilusiones re-novadas, “La Pilarica” ayudará a todos para que así sea. La devoción e historia a ésta Virgen Milagrosa donde las haya, creen que proviene del año mil seiscientos cuarenta, con el milagro del “cojo de Calanda”. Este joven tenía cortada una pierna , y que la Virgen se la volvió a restituir, obrando así el milagro. Ya desde el año mil doscientos noventa y siete, en Roma el Pontífice Bonifacio VIII, concede el perdón a los fieles que contribuyan con su limosna a la reparación del Templo del Pilar, que corre un riesgo inminente de ruina, a causa de su antigüedad. En el mes de septiembre, en concreto el día veintisiete, en el año mil cuatrocientos cin-
cuen ta y seis, el papa Calixto I I I, concede indulgencias a los peregrinos que visitan el Santo Templo. Esta bula fue firmada en Santa María la Mayor. En mil quinientos uno, el Papa Alejandro V I, tramita un documento firmado de su puño y letra, para todos los fieles o peregrinos que visiten el Pilar de Zaragoza. Todas estas connotaciones y otras muchas más, son incluidas en la circular, que el Obispo de Zaragoza, Don Pedro de Librana, remite a los Obispos de la Península Ibérica, adjuntando la Dispensa o Bula, del Papa Gelacio I I, en la urgente necesidad de auxilio, para la reconstrucción del templo tan dañado por causa del deterioro producido por la opresión musulmana. Con toda esta serie de documentos, que revelan la gran importancia del Templo, así mismo también nos revela, la asiduidad del paso de los peregrinos, que llegaron a Zaragoza, mucho antes del año mil seiscientos cuarenta; como por ejemplo “Audado” un monje que visitó el templo en el año mil ciento dieciocho, ó también Santo Domingo de Guzman que lo visitó en mil doscientos veinte. En mil doscientos veintinueve, el Papa Nicolás V. San Vicente Ferrer en mil cuatrocientos treinta y tres. El Cardenal Mendoza en mil cuatrocientos noventa y ocho. El Cardenal Cisneros y el Emperador Carlos V, en mil quinientos dieciocho. En mil quinientos veintiuno el Papa Adriano. San Ignacio de Loyola ,San Francisco Borja, y Hernán Cortés “El Conquistador”, pasaron por El Pilar en el mil quinientos sesenta y nueve. La Emperatriz María de Austria y Felipe I I, en mil quinientos ochenta y cinco. La lista sería interminable, pero aquí más o menos se citan los más conocidos o famosos de aquellos años.
La playa de Poniente (Paseo Miramar) Días atrás, tomando el sol en la playa de Poniente, llegó a mis oidos, que van ha comenzar las obras del “proyecto de desviamiento, canalización y recubrimiento del barranco de Barenys. Este proyecto se basa, que en un futuro no muy lejano, esta zona tenga tanta importancia turística, como en la playa de Levante. maar dat is pas omstreeks 23.30 uur op het terras van KNABBEL&BABBEL, daarvoor kunt u in principe op maandag- en zaterdagavond genieten van het live optreden van NICK en als u wilt kunt u zelf met een karaokesysteem zingen. Wanneer u alleen maar wilt luisteren en/of kijken, geen probleem er is zat te knabbelen en te babbelen in bedoelde zaak. Ook worden nagenoeg alle voetbalwedstrijden op t.v.schermen vertoond. Ook dit jaar kon K&B zich weer verheugen in een grote toeloop van toeristen uit alle windstreken. Niet te verwonderen, want het is er altijd een gezellige boel. Ook op stille momenten schroomt Willy niet om op de bar het hoogste lied te zingen of om de aanwezigen in polonaise de straat op te sturen (en weer terug te halen uiteraard). Ook de keuken heeft weer volop gedraaid dit jaar. Een hoop gasten van vorig seizoen wisten de weg weer te vinden en ook vele nieuwelingen werden verwelkomt en verrast met een varia aan (ook echte Nederlandse) gerechten. Hoe de winter er uit gaat zien weet men nog niet maar voorlopig gaan zij gewoon door, met in ieder geval op bovenvermelde avonden live-music. Karaokemogenlijkheden zijn er elke avond, dus u behoeft zich niet te vervelen.

Of dat je hier nu met vakantie bent, alleen tijdens het seizoen of permanent hier woont, het is een streling voor de tong om eens een keer echte Hollandse stampot te eten. Tijdens een gesprek met William van Bruintje Beer hadden wij het erover, wat er van de winter allemaal ging gebeuren en hij zei dat hij in Nederland de nodige soorten stamppot zou gaan nuttigen. Wij heel jaloers natuurlijk en (u kent ons smulteam een beetje) wij kregen William zo gek dat hij voor ons een echt boerenkooletentje regelde. Dat hebben wij geweten. Voorlopig kunnen wij geen boeren, geen kool en geen worst meer zien. Alhoewel, de winter wordt lang. William en medewerkers bij deze hartelijk bedankt, misschien een idee om volgend seizoen eenmaal in de week een stamppotavond te houden. Wat precies wilde hij niet zeggen, maar William had voor volgend seizoen wel wat verrassingen in petto. Voorlopig draait hij met zijn medewerkers door tot het eind van oktober dus u kunt nog even genieten van de culinaire kunsten van CHRIS DE KOK zoals de keukenmeester af en toe wordt genoemd en met DAANTJE in de bediening, zult u zich ook zeker niet vervelen.

Funky Charlie van Charlie Caplin’s en onze eigen Nikki Safari er iedere zondagavond een feestje van gemaakt met de enige echte Miss wet T-shirt verkiezing in Salou. Zoals aan alle leuke dingen komt ook hier een eind aan met de winter voor de deur en vooral het ontbreken van genoeg vrijwilligers om een nat T-shirt aan te doen is onlangs de laatste van dit seizoen gehouden. Maar als we de eigenaar moeten geloven dan komt ie er zeker weten volgend jaar weer, die Miss wet T-shirt verkiezing. Mooi Sikke gaat door tot het einde Bruin café Mooi Sikke trekt zich niets aan van kreten als ”Het seizoen is voorbij”. Er zijn nog meer dan genoeg Nederlandse vakantiegangers in Salou om ‘s avonds nog een flink feestje te bouwen, aldus Edwin en Peter, de twee eigenaren van bruin café ”Mooi Sikke”. Gezellig aan de bar hangen, er eens een flinke foxtrot uitgooien of Rock & Rollend door de zaak, is in Mooi Sikke nog aan de orde van de dag. Natuurlijk kan je ook zelf eens door de microfoon je eigen zangtalent ten gehore brengen. Daarbij moet vermeld worden dat Edwin (Elvis) meestal daartoe de voorzet geeft. Bij badmode speciaalzaak Xatanga blijft het mooi weer deze zomer. De sympathieke eigenaar is zelf van italiaanse afkomst en kan in veel talen zijn mondje roeren. Samen met zijn lieftallige assistente hebben zij menigeen van een fraaie tanga, bikini of badpak voorzien, ook onze eigen Nikki heeft dit jaar heel wat verschillende creaties van Xatanga gedragen. Natuurlijk zijn er meer winkeltjes die badmode verkopen maar een zo uitgebreide collectie als bij xatanga heeft er geen een. Ook als het om grotere maten gaat kun je hier prima terecht. Verder kun je er louter topmerken verwachten met een perfecte snit en van uitstekende materialen vervaardigd. De prijzen zijn vergeleken met de omringende landen waar deze topmerken ook te koop zijn goedkoper, een reden temeer dus om eens langs te gaan bij Badmode Xatanga in Salou
Het kan jullie, lezers van de Eurotourist, niet ontgaan zijn dat deze lange, hete zomer in Salou nog een vervolg krijgt. De traditie is dat de zomer ’99 niet in Salou eindigt maar in Amsterdam, de hoofdstad van de vrijheid en het mekka van het nachtleven. Ieder jaar weer zijn er een aantal gelukzoekers die ook één of andere feestje in Nederland proberen te organiseren maar er is er maar één die de kwalificatie Mega verdient en dat is natuurlijk de:
Salou Mega Party
De eerste vrijdag van november wordt alweer voor de vijfde keer de Salou Mega Party georganiseerd. Niet alleen de toeristen die een toptijd hebben gehad in Salou maar ook alle werkers kijken uit naar deze happening. Na een lange zomer hard werken kunnen ook zij de remmen los gooien.
De historie
"Het feest is eigenlijk een uit de hand gelopen grap" wordt ons verteld. Na een zomer vol feest en plezier gaat iedereen uiteindelijk weer terug naar Nederland. Eenmaal terug, komt er snel weemoed naar die heerlijke zomer in Salou. Op een regenachtige dag in november gingen een aantal Salougangers elkaar bellen om weer het zomergevoel en de verhalen op te halen. Uiteindelijk werd besloten om ergens in een kroeg in Amsterdam af te spreken. Zo gezegd, zogedaan. Die belde die, die belde die en die belde weer
die. In plaats van de geplande veertig, vijftig man zaten er ineens 300 Salougangers in de Coco’s in Amsterdam. Het idee was toen geboren. Het jaar daarna, we schrijven 1995, moest het gaan gebeuren. Er zou ergens een feest komen maar waar en wanneer wist nog niemand. Eerst was het de RoXY, toen weer de Escape maar uiteindelijk werd het Marcanti Plaza in Amsterdam. "Toen de promotie nog", Iedereen die wat met Salou te maken had ging als een gek helpen promoten door op roze copietjes zoveel mogelijk adressen te verzamelen. "Allemaal lekker primitief en hobbyistisch", maar ja, who cares. Voor de muziek zorgden twee dj’s die met de allerlaatste bus uit Salou mee naar Nederland kwamen. Al met al waren er die eerste avond toch zo’n 1200 mensen bijeen.
Promotie team
Van links naar rechts zie je John, Sabine, Frida, Analieke, Herbert, Ellen, Cees en Bregje het zijn de jongens en meisjes die de afgelopen zomer in het promotie team voor de enige echte Salou reünie hebben gewerkt.
Wat is er allemaal te doen?
"Salou, Salou, Salou, alles is Salou". De dj’s van Snoepy’s en Flash Back worden speciaal overgevlogen, er zijn verschillende acts, er is een groot videoscherm met de beste beelden van Salou 99 en natuurlijk zijn er Go-go dancers. Ook mag een kwartiertje Holland Party niet ontbreken. Als klap op de vuurpijl komt Dj Erick-E draaien, van de oude RoXY Amsterdam. Degenen die even wat minder house willen, komen ook aan hun trekken, want in de andere zaal wordt zowel lekkere swingbeat als populaire top-40 muziek gedraaid. Om vijf uur is het over maar voor de echte feestgangers is de nacht nog niet ten einde. Ergens in Amsterdam wordt er nog een "after" georganiseerd. Helaas, zelfs wij van de Eurotourist zijn er niet achter gekomen waar dat zal zijn. Al met al wordt het dus weer een geweldig feest. Zo’n 4000 Salou-fanaten samen op een avond bij elkaar doen de zomer nog eens dunnetjes over. Ook wij van de Eurotourist zullen er zeker bij zijn.
Natuurlijk hebben wij van de redactie er alles aan gedaan om zoveel mogelijk info over Salou aan boord van de USS Bataan te brengen. Meer dan 1500 Eurotourist Magazines hebben wij met toestemming van de legerleiding onder de manschappen verspreid. Geen wonder dus dat Nikki op menig door de diverse Legeronderdelen georganiseerde parties was uitgenodigd om voor het nodige vertier te zorgen. Natuurlijk hebben wij ook van de gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt om een aantal fraaie plaatjes van het schip te maken.
De USS Bataan maakt deel uit van een vloot die momenteel in de middellandse zee opereert en meer dan 6 maanden van huis blijft. Met als thuisbasis Norfolk Virginia in de verenigde staten, zijn ze dus een heel eind van huis en voorlopig ook nog niet terug. Met zijn meer dan drieduizend koppige bemanning een ware stad op zee. Tijdens hun 5-daags verblijf in de Haven van Tarragona hebben velen van hen Salou
weten te vinden. Nog voordat het schip was afgemeerd waren al verschillende verkenningseenheden aan land gezet om de omgeving te verkennen. Lees: waar je het beste een feestje voor meer dan 3000 man kunt organiseren. Dat werd dus Salou, en niet het veel grotere Tarragona. Waarom? De taal, hoofdzakelijk de overweging om naar Salou te komen. Daarnaast bezit Salou een heel arsenaal aan supergezellige barretjes, disco theken en restaurants. Veel officieren hebben er een kleine mini vakantie van gemaakt en de kleine verblijven aan boord verruild voor een luxe hotelkamer in Salou.
USS Bataan in Salou December 22, after two weeks of diversionary tactics, a large Japanese invasion force landed at Lingayen Gulf. Japanese General Masaharu Homma, with a contingent of 80 ships and 43,000 troops, waded ashore through both a typhoon and the resistance of US trained Philippine reservists. Homma landed tanks and artillery later that day and began advancing south toward Manila despite the valiant resistance of Major General Jonathan Wainwright’s Philippine Scouts.

Zowel heden als verleden van deze vooral in de Amerikaanse geschiedenis zwaar beladen naam zullen je worden uitgelegd. Ook de technische gegevens van het schip en de data betreffende de leidinggevende officieren aan boord van de USS Bataan zullen geen geheim blijven. In de diverse gesprekken die we hebben gehad is Engels de voertaal geweest en dat betekend ook dat we de rest van deze reportage in de engelse taal zullen afdrukken dit om eventuele fouten die bij het terug vertalen naar het Nederlands zouden kunnen ontstaan te voorkomen.

Wainwright, USA Last message from Corregidor May 6, 1942 Just ten short hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, Japanese planes again surprised US forces with an attack on Clark Field, the main US air base on the Philippine island of Luzon. Subsequent Japanese landings on Luzon took place on December 10th and 12th, and on
On Christmas Eve, 1941, more of Homma’s forces landed to the east at Lamon Bay and began their advance toward Manila, preparing to crush the American-Philippine forces in a ‘pincer’ maneuver. General Douglas MacArthur put into effect plan ‘Orange 3’; the original plan for defense of the island. The Philippine Scouts heroically opposed the Japanese advance while the main forces complied with MacArthur’s order to withdraw to the Bataan Peninsula. The retreating units were forced into leaving behind the stockpiles of food and medical supplies which were to sustain them. On December 26th Manila is declared an open city by General MacArthur and he orders all troops and anti-aircraft guns to be withdrawn in accordance with The Hague Convention of 1907. On 30 December 1941, President Manuel Quezon is inaugurated on Corregidor for his second term of office. Quezon pledges to ”stand by America and fight with her until victory is won.” The War Department receives a radiogram from MacArthur declaring that the Japanese raids on Manila are ”completely violative of international law” and that ”at the proper time I bespeak due retaliatory measures.” The Japanese occupation force move into Manila on 02 January 1942, and Japanese planes begin daily attacks on Corregidor. The Japanese assumed that overall victory was assured, and a small Japanese reserve force was tasked with clearing the Bataan Peninsula of remaining opposition forces. On January 10, these Japanese troops met up against an Allied stronghold just north of
Abucay. Allied forces held off the Japanese advance at the Abucay line until their foes took advantage of a weakness at Mt. Natib on January 22nd. The American-Filipino fighters were forced to retreat further into the Bataan peninsula. The rugged terrain forced a slowdown in the Japanese pursuit , and the Allies were able to establish another stronghold further south on Mt. Samat. On February 8, Homma received reinforcements from Tokyo, and began to regroup for another assault. The continued successful opposition of the American-Filipino fighters to the Japanese takeover of Bataan provided the much needed hope to the US homeland that the battle in the Pacific was not yet lost. In March 1942, General MacArthur received orders to escape to Australia and take over as Supreme Allied Commander in the Pacific Theater. He reluctantly left Bataan on March 11th with the proclamation ”I shall return.” General Jonathan M. Wainwright, U.S. Army, immediately assumed command of the forces on the island of Corregidor off the southern tip of the Bataan peninsula. Major General Edward King commanded the remaining Allied forces on Bataan. While relatively well armed, these forces were living on one quarter the prescribed combat rations and had virtually no available medical supplies. Malnutrition and disease were becoming rampant. Hunger and sickness eventually accomplished what the Allies’ Japanese enemies could not. The odds against the American-Filipino troops remaining on Bataan became overwhelming, and on April 9, 1942, with face in palm, Major General King surrendered all forces on the peninsula. Thousands of prisoners were taken almost immediately by the Japanese. With Allied fighters spread throughout Bataan, it would be days before the word of surrender could reach them all. Many refused to believe that the news of US surrender was real, and some retreated further into the mountains and continued to fight.

The Crest Designed by the crew, the seahorse represents Bataan’s natural association with the sea. The central path commemorates the Bataan Death March. The spears from a wedge underscoring amphibious assault and deplloyment of men and cargo ashore, as well as combat readiness, while highlighting USS Bataan’s battle stars. Bamboo alludes to the tropics and the Pacific Theater where the first USS Bataan served. The wings represent the aviation heritage of the ship. The stars are for the seven battle stars earned during the Korean Conflict, while the five points of the central star are for World War II Battle sttars. The mount suggests the mountainous terrain of Bataan; the sun is adapted from the seal of the Republic of the Philippines. The crossed swords represent the Navy-Marine Corps Team.

Robert T. Conklin DCCM(SW), United States Navy Command Master Chief USS BATAAN Master Chief Damage Controlman Robert T. Conklin assumed the duties as Command Master Chief of BATAAN on October 6, 1997. Master Chief reported to BATAAN from duty as the Force Master Chief, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. His prior Command Master Chief tours include USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and USS Conolly (DD 979). Master Chief hails from Paterson, N.J., where he enlisted in the Navy in July 1969. He graduated from Damage Controlman Class "A" School in 1970 and reported to the Mayport-based destroyer USS William C. Lawe (DD 763). His next sea duty was aboard the Charleston-based guided missile destroyer USS Semmes (DDG 18) as Repair Division LPO. In 1982 he reported aboard USS Conolly for his first of two tours in the Norfolk-based ship. He served first as ship’s Repair Division LCPO, then as the Damage Control Assistant. His next sea tour was in 1988 when he reported aboard the Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA 2) after graduating from the Senior Enlisted Academy at Newport, R.I., Class 32. Aboard USS Saipan he served as Repair Division LCPO, Fire Marshal and Ballast Officer. Ashore, Master Chief was a recruiter at Navy Recruiting District, Newark, N.J., from 197680. From 1985-88, he served as the Senior Instructor and Curriculum Model Manager for the Afloat Safety Officer and Safety Petty Officer courses. Master Chief Conklin qualified as an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist in 1981. He was designated a Master Training Specialist by COMTRALANT in 1986. Later that same year, he received Fathom magazine’s "Writer of the Year" award from the Naval Safety Center. A 1994 graduate of the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, he also earned an Associate of Science degree in General Studies from Mohegan Community College and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Relations Management from Golden Gate University where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. female sailors. This ”Women at Sea” modification provides LHD-5 with living areas for nearly 450 female officers, chiefs, enlisted personnel and embarked troops. Overall, the ship has living areas for nearly 3,200 crew members and troops. In carrying out its primary mission, BATAAN will transport and land ashore not only troops, but also the tanks, trucks and other vehicles, artillery, ammunition, and complete supplies necessary to fully support the assault. The assault support system aboard ship coordinates horizontal and vertical movement of troops, cargo and vehicles. Monorail trains, moving at speeds up to 600-feet-per-minute, transport cargo and supplies from storage and staging areas throughout the ship to a 13,600-square foot well deck, which opens to the sea through huge gates in the ship’s stern. There, the cargo, as well as troops and vehicles, are loaded aboard landing craft for transit to the beach. The LCAC air cushion landing craft can ”fly” out of the dry well deck, or the well deck can be ballasted down for conventional craft to float out on their way to the beach. Simultaneously, helicopters are brought from the hangar deck to the flight deck by two deck-edge elevators, and loaded with supplies from three massive cargo elevators. LHD-5’s armament system includes the NATO Sea Sparrow Surface Missile System (NSSMS) for antiair warfare protection, two Rolling Airframe Missile (RAM) Systems and two Phalanx Closein Weapon System (CIWS) mounts to counter threats from low flying aircraft and close-in small craft. Six missile decoy launchers augment LHD-5’s antiship missile defenses. LHD-5 is 844 feet long, with a 106 foot beam. Two steam propulsion plants, developing a combined 70,000 horsepower, drive the 40,500ton ship to speeds in excess of 20 knots. Fabrication work for BATAAN (LHD-5) began at the Ingalls Shipbuilding facility on August 2, 1993, and the ship’s keel was laid on March 16, 1994. LHD-5 was launched on March 15, 1996. BATAAN was built utilizing efficient pre-
outfitting and modular construction techniques. Hundreds of smaller subassemblies, in which piping sections, ventilation ducting and other shipboard hardware, as well as major machinery items, such as main propulsion equipment, generators, and electrical panels were constructed. The preoutfitted subassemblies were then joined with others to form assemblies which were welded together to form five completed hull and superstructure modules. These five giant ship modules, each weighing thousands of tons, were joined together on land to form the completed ship’s hull prior to launch. The result of this early outfitting and modular construction was a ship 74 percent complete at launch. The ship’s launching was just as innovative as her construction. LHD-5 was rolled from her construction area to a floating drydock for launch on a rail transfer system. The drydock was then positioned over a deep-water pit and ballasted down, allowing LHD-5 to float free. LHD-5 entered service with the U.S. Atlantic Fleet when commissioned on 20 September 1997.
USS Bataan, A city at sea You have entered a tradition-rich culture of nautical life and a unique way of living and working. The ship is “awake” 24 hours a day. The crew works morning, evening and night shifts, known as “watches”. In addition to working their regular jobs, Sailors participate in the ship’s numerous drills, such as man overboard, abandon ship, every Bataan Sailor is taught how to save the ship in the event of fire, flooding or battle damage. When crewmembers are not working, they can take advantage of many services offered on the ship. Like a small city, it has equivalent services of: Restaurants, Store, Bank (with ATMs), Post Office, Laundry/Dry Cleaners, Library, Photography Studio, Printing Plant, Police Department, 2 Barber Shops, College Courses, City Hall, Gym, TV and Radio Stations, Hospital, Chapel, Jail, Basketball Court, Chemical Lab, Fire Department, Legal Services, Electrical Power Plant and a dentist. Executive Officer Norma Lee Hackney Captain, United States Navy Executive Officer USS BATAAN Captain Hackney is a native of Bradenton, Florida. In 1978, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Florida and received her commission through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Program. Captain Hackney’s first assignment was to Naval Data Automation Command, Washington, D.C. as an Ecomomic Analyst. In 1980, she transferred to USS PROTEUS (AS 19), homeported in Guam, as the Damage Control Assistant and Engineer Officer. In 1985, Captain Hackney graduated with a Master of Science Degree in Operations Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. Her follow-on tour was aboard USS YOSEMITE (AD 19), Mayport, Florida, as Engineer Officer. In 1988, she graduated from the Armed Forces Staff College, Norfolk, Virginia and reported to the Joint Saff, 58, to serve as an Operations Analyst. Captain Hackney was Executive Officer aboard USS MERRIMACK (AO 179), Norfolk, Virginia, from 1991 to 1992. Afterwards, she was assigned to the OPNAV Staff N81, as Head Surface Analyst. From November 1994 until November 1996, Captain Hackney was the Commanding Officer of USS WILLAMETTE (AO 180) The highlight of this tour was deploying to the Western Pacific and the Persian Gulf as a member of the USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) Battle Group. Her next assignment was to Surface Warfare School, Command Department, Newport, Rhode Island to instruct Prospective Commanding Officers and Executive Officers. In June 1998, she became Executive Officer of USS BATAAN During her various afloat assignments, she sailed to the Mediterranean, Western Pacific, South Pacific, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, and the Caribbean. Personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medals, Navy Commendation Medal as well as various other expeditionary and unit awards.
When Japanese forces entered Mariveles, they had captured 76,000 prisoners, most of whom were sick, wounded or suffering from malnutrition. The Japanese supply line, barely sufficient to support their own troops, would be unable to transport these POWs. The prisoners were forced to march the 65 miles of treacherous terrain to the Japanese POW Camp, Camp O’Donnell, to the north. The infamous ”Death March” had begun. Many members of the prisoner garrison were systematically executed, while the sick and weak were pushed to exhaustion before being bayoneted or beaten to death with the butt end of a Japanese rifle. Many of the 54,000 who survived the march across Bataan would later succumb to disease or torture while imprisoned. The Bataan ”Death March”, recognized as one of the greatest inhumanities of WWII, is also one of the greatest displays of heroism and human spirit on the part of those who did survive. By May 6, on the island of Corregidor, Japanese troops forced the surrender of Wainwright and all U.S. and Allied forces in the Philippines. It would be nearly two-and-a-half years before General MacArthur could fulfill his promise to return to, and retake from the Japanese, the Philippine Islands. USS BATAAN (LHD 5) commemorates those who served and sacrificed in the Philippines in the name of freedom in the Pacific.
Technical Data BATAAN (LHD-5) is the fifth ship to be christened into the WASP (LHD-1) Class of U.S. Navy Multipurpose Amphibious Assault Ships. The first four LHDs — USS WASP (LHD-1), USS
ESSEX (LHD-2), USS KEARSARGE (LHD3) and USS BOXER (LHD-4) — are already serving the Fleet around the world. Following BATAAN, which was commissioned in September 1997, are two additional LHDs, BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD-6) and IWO JIMA (LHD7). Massive cranes place LHD 5’s superstructure The principal mission of WASP Class ships is to enable the Navy/Marine Corps team to accomplish a seamless transition from the sea to a land battle, primarily as the command ship of an Amphibious Ready Group (ARG). LHDs are specifically designed to lay off a troubled area of the world, and insert forces ashore by helicopters and 50 m.p.h. LCAC hover craft. The assault forces are provided combat air support by embarked AV-8B Harrier II V/STOL ”jump-jets”. One ship of the current class, USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3), served as the base ship for the successful rescue of Air Force Captain Scott O’Grady from Serbian-held territory in Bosnia. In its role of commanding an Amphibious Ready Group, an LHD is fully capable of amphibious assault, advance force and special purpose operations, as well as non-combatant evacuation and other humanitarian missions. Additionally, the ships are fully-equipped with command and control (C4I) systems for flagship command duty; and have medical facilities — including a 600 bed hospital — second only to the Navy’s Hospital Ships in capability. Commanding Officer David Churchill Taylor Captain, United States Navy Commanding Officer USS BATAAN Captain David Taylor was commissioned an Ensign in August 1974 and designated a Naval Aviator in August 1975. Following flight training, Captain Taylor reported to HM-12 in Norfolk as an H-53 (Sea Dragon) pilot and squadron legalofficer. From September 1978 to September 1981 he served in Washington, D.C. at the Bureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) as an assignment officer; on President Reagan's inaugural committee; and as a Joint Chiefs of Staff Intern officer. He returned to sea duty at HSL-37, NAS Barbers Point, HI., where he made two LAMPS deployments aboard USS KNOX (FF-1052) and USS FRANCIS HAMMOND (FF-1067). In November of 1984, he reported to the Collegeof Command and Staff, U.S. Naval War College. Captain Taylor graduated with honors as the U.S. student in the Naval Staff College international class, and earned M.A. degrees in National Security and Strategic Studies from the NWC, and International Relations from Salve Regina College. Captain Taylor returned to the Norfolk fleet in January of 1986 as a squadron Operations Officer, Maintenance Department Head and Detachment Officer-in-Charge. In January 1988 he returned to Washington, to the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (Aviation Warfare). During his tenure as Commanding Officer of HSL-37 at NAS Barbers Point, HI., the squadron won the 1992 CNO Safety Award, Top Torpedo Award and deployed detachments to support Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. From April 1993 to May 1995 he served as Operations officer aboard USS INCHON (LPH-12) in support of operations off Somalia and Haiti. He reported to the staff of Supreme Allied Command Atlantic in June 1995 where he served as a staff officer responsible for the coordination of Partnership for Peace activities and providing advice on NATOenlargement issues until April 1997. Captain Taylor assumed duties as Executive Officer aboard USS BATAAN (LHD5) in September 1997, and assumed command of BATAAN on 10 July 1998. Personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (2), Navy Commendation Medal (2) and other service, campaign and unit awards.
Een van de weinige zaken die niet geheel op toeristen draait maar tevens de plaatselijke bevolking tot haar clientèle mag rekenen is restaurant BEI CLAUS. In deze door Ellie en Sue beheerde eetgelegenheid is het goed toeven. Bij binnenkomst heb je meteen het gevoel dat je een beetje thuis bent en toch uit. Het eerste door de gastvrijheid, het tweede door de internationale kaart. BEI CLAUS heeft als een van de specialiteiten een spies met heerlijke vleesgerechten en bijbehorende sausjes en groenten. Bij het eten van een varkenshaas met Stroganoffsaus, één van de huisspecialiteiten, welke met een hele verzameling toebehoren wordt geserveerd, kun je het gerecht naar hartelust zelf op smaak brengen. Een echte aanrader zeker een keertje proberen. Ook de mosselen in knoflooksaus uit de oven zijn overheerlijk. Tot slot nog even aandacht voor een heerlijk nagerecht met als hoofdbestanddeel frambozenijs. Heel verfrissend en het verdrijft het zgn. “volle gevoel” dat je soms na het eten wel eens kunt hebben. Eten bij BEI CLAUS is echt “uit eten” lekker, gezellig en ongedwongen. Met zijn tweetjes of met een grote groep (vrijgezellenfeesten e.d.) het kan er allemaal. Kortom BEI CLAUS is een zaak met voor ieder wat wils en naar wij begrepen hebben, zijn ze ook van de winter enkele dagen per week geopend. Welke, dat kunt u beter even zelf vragen aan Ellie en Sue van Restaurant Bei Claus in de c./Rodriquez Pomatta, 14 in Salou ( nr 34 op de plattegrond)
In discotheek Snoepy’s is het dit jaar echt feest. Nog nooit hebben zoveel landgenoten hun avonden, nachten, in deze discotheek doorgebracht dan dit jaar. Niet zo verwonderlijk natuurlijk als je bedenkt dat het één van de enigste discotheken in Salou is waar je als Nederlander echt van harte welkom bent. Nadat begin dit jaar het nieuwe gedeelte in gebruik is genomen werd al snel duidelijk dat dit één van de gezelligste cafés van Salou zou worden. Sfeervol ingericht en in allure niet onderdoende voor een Hardrock café is het in dit Snoepy’s café goed toeven. Ze hebben dit jaar wel heel erg hun best gedaan om steeds weer entertainment van de bovenste plank te organiseren in Discotheek Snoepy’s. Getuige de professionele Go-Go danser. Natuurlijk weet het bedienend personeel ook hoe je de sfeer er in brengt. De D.J.’s weten ook precies wat wij Nederlanders lekkere muziek vinden en in de discotheek kun je dan ook steeds de nieuwste hits beleven. In het café is het allemaal iets rustiger zodat je zelf kunt kiezen wat je wilt horen. Daarnaast kun je ook gezellig op het grote terras plaatsnemen en een beetje tot rust komen dat is soms best wel eens lekker. Discotheek Snoepy’s is geopend tot 6 uur onder de morgen, 7 dagen per week. Aan alle mooie dingen komt een eind en dat betekent een knallende afscheidsparty op zaterdag 30 oktober. Dan gaat de discotheek voor het laatst open dit jaar en moet je weer tot volgend jaar april wachten.

Tevens zal er uitgekeken worden naar de vrolijkste supporter. Voor de winnaar/winnares is er een fraaie prijs op de avond van de prijsuitreiking. De prijsuitreiking vindt plaats op 22 oktober omstreeks 22.00 uur in de bar van Hotel Delfin Park.
Beste Sportvrienden, Het is dit jaar weer gelukt om het zaalvoetbaltoernooi in Salou te organiseren. Een toernooi welke vorig jaar met veel enthousiasme is ontvangen in deze bloeiende sportieve badplaats, met z’n vele uitgaansmogelijkheden en attracties. Met assistentie van plaatselijke persoonlijkheden en spontane hulp van medereizigers groeide ons toernooi vorig jaar uit tot een prachtig aanvullend evenement in Salou, waar verbroedering tussen vakantiegangers en ingezetenen belangrijker was dan sportief succes. Als iedereen weer hetzelfde steentje wil bijdragen kunnen wij het succes van vorig jaar evenaren. Zonder uw sportieve instelling en sociale bijdrage is evenaring niet haalbaar. Een special welkom voor de teams van Ziekenhuis Walcheren, Knabbel & Babbel, De Lange Wapper en de Kempische ZVB, die dit jaar voor het eerst meedoen. Er zal met twaalf teams gestreden worden om het Recreatieve en het Prestatieve kampioenschap van het PNL-Doesport toernooi. Vier teams meer dan vorig jaar. Uw kwaliteiten als sportman/sportvrouw kunt u tonen in de zaal van de Gemeentelijke Sporthal van Salou. Wanneer kwaliteit en inzet gepaard gaan met de Olympische Gedachte, zal dit internationaal evenement een behoorlijke bijdrage leveren tot verbroedering door sport. Met dank aan de mensen die op welke wijze danook hun medewerking aan dit toernooi verlenen. Zonder uw speciale bijdrage is organisatie van deze sportweek niet mogelijk.
