We brengen verder aan de ene kant klassiekers en gevestigde namen, als ambassadeurs van de Turkse kunsten: de draaiende derwisjen uit Konya, het traditionele schimmentheater Karagöz, maar ook grote hedendaagse kunstenaars als Gülsün Karamustafa (De Centrale for Contemporary Art & Argos, p.24), Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin (M HKA, p.25), Ayşe Erkmen (SMAK, p.26) en Gouden Palmwinnaar Nuri Bilge Ceylan (p.27). Een eerbetoon aan Istanbul mocht ook niet ontbreken. Twee hoofdtentoonstellingen voeren u naar de legendarische stad. Imagine Istanbul in Bozar toont de inspirerende stad door het oog van fotografen, filmmakers en beeldende kunstenaars (p.17). Istanbul-Antwerpen. Twee havens. Twee steden. in het MAS bekijkt wat de aanwezigheid van water voor een stad en haar inwoners betekent (p.21). Dit 25ste festival wordt ook een laboratorium. Een laboratorium voor onze nieuwe missie, waarin we naast de gebruikelijke erfgoedprojecten en hedendaagse projecten, de noties creatie en uitwisseling naar voren schuiven. Zo nodigde een hele reeks venues in België en omstreken Turkse kunstenaars uit om in dialoog te gaan met de locale kunstscène en om nieuw werk te creëren. EUROPALIA

zelf organiseerde in Istanbul een heus EUROPALIA TURKEY appartement, waar kunstenaars op residentie konden gaan naar aanleiding van het festival. En zo zal er overal nieuw werk van uiteenlopende kunstenaars te zien of te horen zijn: beeldend kunstenaar Gauthier Oushoorn in het CID (p.28), geluidskunstenaar Débruit en fotografe Bieke Depoorter in BOZAR (p.17), danser Melih Kıraç in Workspacebrussels (p.77)… Gedurende de 4 maanden van het festival zijn er ook continu verrassende samenwerkingen te ontdekken: jazzpianist Jef Neve met digital artist Candaş Şişman (p.60), percussionist Okay Temiz met La Fanfare du Belgistan (p.60), componist Mustafa Özkent met een Belgische gelegenheidsband (p.62), misdaadschrijvers Ahmet Ümit en Pascale Fontenau (p.92)… Zo hebben we er met dit programma niet naar gestreefd om exhaustief te zijn, wel om een divers beeld te geven van een rijk patrimonium en een sterke artistieke scène met veel ruimte voor nieuwe creaties en dialoog tussen kunstenaars. We verwelkomen u graag in het najaar voor EUROPALIA TURKEY!

N Deze herfst gaat EUROPALIA TURKEY van start en opent de centrale tentoonstelling, Anatolia (p.13). Een erfgoedtentoonstelling in BOZAR rond het belang en doorleven van rituelen: een inleiding op het gastland, vanuit een nieuwe en boeiende invalshoek én een toeganspoort tot het festival.

F Le coup d’envoi du festival EUROPALIA TURKEY sera donné cet automne, avec l’inauguration de l’exposition phare Anatolia à BOZAR (p.13). Une exposition patrimoniale qui se penche sur l’importance et la pérennité des rituels : elle présente ainsi le pays invité sous un angle nouveau, captivant et constitue une véritable porte d’entrée du festival. Nous avons prévu des classiques et des noms connus pour être les ambassadeurs de l’art turc: les derviches tourneurs de Konya, le théâtre d’ombre traditionnel Karagöz, mais aussi de grands artistes contemporains comme Gülsün Karamustafa (De Centrale for Contemporary Art & Argos, p.24), Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin (M HKA, p.25), Ayşe Erkmen (SMAK, p.26), ainsi que lauréat de la Palme d’or, Nuri Bilge Ceylan (p.27). Il était inconcevable de ne pas rendre hommage à Istanbul. Deux grandes expositions vous feront donc naviguer dans les méandres de cette ville légendaire. Imagine Istanbul, à BOZAR, révèle cette ville inspirante à travers le regard de photographes, d’écrivains, de cinéastes et d’artistes plasticiens (p.17). Istanbul-Anvers. Deux ports. Deux villes. au MAS se penche, quant à elle, sur les effets de la présence de l’eau sur une ville et sur ses habitants (p.21). Ce 25ème festival sera un véritable laboratoire. Le laboratoire de notre nouvelle mission : outre les projets patrimoniaux et les événements contemporains qui nous sont coutumiers, nous faisons dorénavant la part belle aux notions de création et d’échange. Divers partenaires culturels situés en Belgique et dans les pays

limitrophes ont invité des artistes turcs à dialoguer avec la scène artistique locale et à créer de nouvelles œuvres. EUROPALIA a même aménagé un authentique appartement EUROPALIA TURKEY à Istanbul, destiné à accueillir des artistes en résidence à l’occasion du festival. Partout, il sera donc possible d’apprécier visuellement ou acoustiquement de nouvelles créations réalisées par divers artistes : le plasticien Gauthier Oushoorn au CID (p.28), l’explorateur sonore Débruit et la photographe Bieke Depoorter à BOZAR (p.17), le danseur Melih Kıraç au Workspacebrussels (p.77)… Nous vous invitons aussi à découvrir de surprenantes collaborations qui seront présentées en continu pendant toute la durée – 4 mois – du festival : le pianiste de jazz Jef Neve et l’artiste numérique Candaş Şişman (p.60), le percussionniste Okay Temiz et La Fanfare du Belgistan (p.60), le compositeur Mustafa Özkent et un groupe belge spécialement réuni pour l’occasion (p.62), l’auteur de polars Ahmet Ümit et Pascale Fontenau (p.92)… Avec cette programmation, nous n’avons en aucun cas tenté d’être exhaustifs ; nous avons plutôt voulu rendre compte de la diversité de ce riche patrimoine et de cette solide scène artistique, où les nouvelles créations et le dialogue entre les artistes ont toute leur place. E This fall EUROPALIA TURKEY opens with the main exhibition, Anatolia. Home of Eternity (p.13). An exhibition in BOZAR around the importance and continuity of rituals: an introduction to the heritage of the guest county, from a new and fascinating perspective and a gateway to the festival.

Therefore new artworks by different artists will be displayed and performed: the visual artist Gauthier Oushoorn at the CID (p.28), the sound artist Débruit and the photographer Bieke Depoorter at BOZAR (p.17), the dancer Melih Kıraç at Workspacebrussels (p.77)…

We are bringing forward more classic and established names as ambassadors of the Turkish arts: the whirling dervishes of Konya, the traditional shadow theatre Karagöz, but also essential contemporary artists such as Gülsün Karamustafa (De Centrale for Contemporary Art & Argos p.24), Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin (M HKA p.25), Ayse Erkmen (SMAK p.26) and the winner of the Palme d’Or Nuri Bilge Ceylan (p.27).

Furthermore, surprising collaborations will be unveiled throughout the 4 months of the festival: the jazz pianist Jef Neve with the digital artist Candaş Şişman (p.60), the percussionist Okay Temiz with La Fanfare du Belgistan (p.60), the composer Mustafa Özkent with a Belgian band specifically formed for this occasion (p.62), the crime writers Ahmet Ümit and Pascale Fonteneau (p.92)…

The festival would not be complete without a proper tribute to Istanbul. Two main exhibitions take you to the legendary city. Imagine Istanbul (Bozar) sheds light on the inspiring city through the eye of photographers, writers, directors and visual artists (p.17). Port City Talks. Istanbul-Antwerp (MAS) explores the decisive role played by water for a city and its inhabitants (p.21).

The programme is not meant to be exhaustive but aims to give a diverse overview of a rich heritage and a strong artistic scene with plenty of room for new creations and dialogue between artists. We gladly welcome you this upcoming autumn to EUROPALIA TURKEY!

EUROPALIA TURKEY Team This 25th edition of the festival will also be a laboratory. A laboratory for our new mission where, alongside the usual heritage and contemporary projects, we will put forward the notions of creation and exchange. Indeed, a wide range of venues in Belgium and its surroundings invited Turkish artists in order to engage them in a dialogue with the local art scene and create new works. EUROPALIA even set up a EUROPALIA TURKEY flat in Istanbul where the artists were invited for a residency.

N Imagine Istanbul is een portret van Turkijes legendarische stad die

al sinds de 19de eeuw zowel Turkse als andere kunstenaars inspireert. Naast foto’s van de grote Ara Güler – het ‘Oog van Istanbul’ – wordt werk van de hedendaagse Turkse fotografen Ahmet Polat en Ali Taptık getoond. Daarnaast ook foto’s van Europese fotografen zoals Henri Cartier-Bresson en Bieke Depoorter, die nieuw werk voor de expo maakte. Het parcours is ontworpen als een fotografische reis en wordt aangevuld met muziek van Débruit (met nieuwe composities voor de expo), interviews (o.a. met Orhan Pamuk), films en installaties van Ayşe Erkmen, Sophie Calle, Atelier Bow-Wow en Kasper Bosmans. Bezoekers maken er een multimediale reis langs de Bosporus, de Gouden Hoorn en de Schelde. Wat betekent een haven en de aanwezigheid van water voor een stad? Hoe wordt zo’n havenstad geleefd, doorkruist, bebouwd, … Hoe is dat in Istanbul? En in Antwerpen? Een groep Turkse hedendaagse kunstenaars creëerden nieuw werk rond dit thema. In foto’s, video’s en installaties werpen ze een nieuw licht op de torens van Istanbul en Antwerpen. Ze belichten de dokken, kranen en scheepswerven in beide havens en leiden de bezoeker over de bruggen van de Bosporus en door de tunnels onder de Schelde.

logical findings and stunning historical objects tell the parallel story of Istanbul and Antwerp. Visitors take a multimedia trip alongside the Bosporus, the Golden Horn and the Scheldt. What do a port and the presence of water imply for a city? How is a port city experienced, crossed, built…? How is it in Istanbul? And in Antwerp? A group of Turkish contemporary artists created new works around this topic. With pictures, videos and installation they shed light upon the towers of Istanbul and Antwerp. They bring into the open the docks, cranes and shipyards in both harbours and lead the visitor over the bridges of the Bosporus and through the tunnels under the Scheldt.

Te bekijken in het MAS: enkele schakels van de enorme ketting die in het Byzantijnse tijdperk de toegang verhinderde van ongewenste schepen in de Gouden Hoorn, de natuurlijke haven van Constantinopel. Ze werd gespannen tussen de stad en de Galatatoren aan de andere kant van de zeestraat en was honderden meters lang. Ze werd maar een keer gebroken, door de Venetianen in 1204.

A voir au MAS, quelques maillons de l’énorme chaîne qui interdisait, à l’époque byzantine, l’entrée de bateaux indésirables dans la Corne d’Or, le port naturel de Constantinople. Tendue depuis la ville jusqu’à la tour de Galata de l’autre côté du détroit, elle faisait plusieurs centaines de mètres de long. Elle ne fut brisée qu’une seule fois, par les Vénitiens, en 1204.

On view at MAS are a few links from the huge chain that, during the Byzantine era, prevented undesirable boats from entering the Golden Horn, Constantinople’s natural port. Several hundred metres long, it used to be hung between the city and the Galata Tower on the other side of the strait. It has only been broken once: by the Venetians in 1204.

Kaval N De kaval is een wijd verspreide herdersfluit in de Balkanlanden en Turkije. Om erop te spelen, blaast de muzikant op 45° op een van de afgeschuinde hoeken. De Turkse benaming komt van ‘q-w-l’, wat ‘woord’ betekent in het Arabisch. F Le kaval est une flûte pastorale très répandue dans les Balkans et en Turquie. N De hit Holigan – massaal overgenomen door voetbalfans bij de release in 1998 – bezorgde de ska-punkgroep een onverwachte bekendheid in Turkije maar ook in Duitsland. Sindsdien heeft de groep niets van zijn onstuimigheid verloren: duizenden fans wonen hun concerten bij. En net zoals alle ska-punk swingt het! Depuis, le groupe n’a rien perdu de sa fougue : ses concerts rassemblent des milliers de fans. Et comme tout ska punk, ça déménage ! bruisend centraal plein in Istanbul maar ook het Turkse woord voor ‘improvisatie’. Het trio bespeelt traditionele instrumenten en improviseert op basis van Turkse en oriëntaalse motieven waaraan ze invloeden uit de jazz, blues en gypsiemuziek toevoegen. Een muzikale mozaïek als afspiegeling van het kosmopolitische Istanbul. F Outre le nom d’une place névralgique à Istanbul, Taksim est le mot turc pour « improvisation ». Jouant d’instruments traditionnels, le trio improvise sur base de motifs turcs et orientaux, en y insérant des influences jazz, blues et tziganes. N Amigo werd geboren in Turkije en groeide op in Berlijn. Om zijn

dubbele identiteit uit te drukken, maakte hij zich meester van de zeybek*. Zoals de naam zegt, is Zeybreak een samentrekking van zeybek en breakdance, van de traditionele dans van zijn geboortedorp aan de oevers van de Egeïsche Zee en de hiphop van zijn urbane ik. F Amigo est né en Turquie et a grandi à Berlin : il s’empare du zeybek* pour exprimer sa double identité. A l’instar du nom, le Zeybreak est une contraction entre le zeybek et la breakdance, entre la danse traditionnelle de son village natal des rives de la mer Egée et le hip-hop de son moi urbain. E Amigo was born in Turkey and raised in Berlin and uses the zeybek* to express his dual identity. As its name suggests, Zeybreak is a contraction of zeybek and breakdance, between the traditional dance of his home village on the shores of the Aegean Sea and the hip-hop of his urban self.

Featuring leaps, genuflexions and pirouettes, the dancer moves freely from one movement to the next, with each rhythmical stop acclaimed by the audience.

In Ad Noctum gaan zijn twee topdansers Julie Guibert en Kerem Gelebek een interactie aan met een totem van beelden, geluid en licht van de Taiwanese kunstenaar Iuan-Hau Chiang. Sakınan göze çöp batar tot slot, is een solo geschreven voor Kerem Gelebek en gaat over ballingschap, een thema dat deze danser van Turkse origine bekend is. Hij werd twee keer bekroond op het filmfestival van Antalya, onder andere voor Dot, het tweede deel van zijn trilogie rond traditionele Turkse kunst. Als auteur ontving hij de Yunus Nadi-literatuurprijs voor zijn debuutroman, Ares in Wonderland. F Derviş Zaim est un auteur et réalisateur turco-cypriote. Il fut primé par deux fois au festival du film d’Antalya, notamment pour Dot, second volet de sa trilogie consacrée à l’art turc traditionnel. En tant qu’auteur, il a reçu le prix littéraire Yunus Nadi pour son premier roman Ares in Wonderland. E Derviş Zaim is a Turkish Cypriot writer and director. Verschillende bibliotheeknetwerken doen ook deze keer mee door workshops, conferenties, themaweken en filmprojecties over Turkije aan te bieden. Sommige grijpen de kans aan om ook hun Turkse boekencollectie en filmverzameling uit te breiden. EUROPALIA TURKEY zal dus in heel Belgie aanwezig zijn via de deelnemende bibliotheeknetwerken. F C’est devenu une tradition : à l’occasion des festivals EUROPALIA, les bibliothèques se joignent au projet et se mettent aux couleurs du pays invité. Plusieurs réseaux de bibliothèques participent à la fête en proposant des ateliers, conférences, des semaines à thèmes et des projections de films liés à la Turquie. Skatepark artiesten Esk Reyn en NUKA voor om het Skatepark Ursulines (Brussel) te herschilderen. De 2 graffitikunstenaars werken hiervoor voor de eerste keer samen met het team van de Sk8boarders. EUROPALIA INDIA (2013) een speciaal schoolaanbod: schoolgroepen kregen voor slechts € 1 per leerling toegang tot de hoofdtentoonstelling. Deze schoolactie wordt opnieuw herhaald voor EUROPALIA TURKEY: zowel de allerkleinsten als de jongvolwassenen kunnen aan het speciale tarief van € 1 elk van de twee hoofdtentoonstellingen in BOZAR komen bezoeken. F EUROPALIA a lancé depuis EUROPALIA INDIA (2013) une offre speciale à l’attention des écoles : les groupes scolaires avaient accès à l’exposition principale pour seulement € 1 par élève. Cette action est renouvelée pour EUROPALIA TURKEY : les deux expositions principales à BOZAR sont accessibles au tarif spécial de € 1 pour les élèves du primaire au supérieur. Liberté et créativite en situation réelle, encadré par notre équipe de communication et par les professeurs.
