‘neath the elms Dear Alumni and Friends, Many people look forward to a relaxing summer, but I always look forward to fall and the beginning of a new academic year. Campus is buzzing with activity and the leaves start to turn in the crisp autumn air. The arrival of new and returning students for the first day of classes is one of my favorite days of the year. Not long ago, you and I had a vision for this campus that seemed out of reach. Today, this vision is becoming the reality as Eureka enters its transformative years. In one short year, alumni and friends of Eureka College provided the resources needed to gain even greater national recognition and for critical improvement projects on campus to begin: • The Centennial of Ronald Reagan’s birth prompted a series of Eureka-related events and activities in 2011. The Chorale performed at the Reagan Centennial Celebration in Dixon and students Katie Rowen and Richie Gregory were members of the Reagan Foundation National Centennial Youth Commission. • Eureka’s signature Centennial event, the Reagan and the Midwest academic conference, brought an impressive line-up of speakers and scholars to campus, including Former Governor of Illinois Jim Edgar, Former Attorney General Ed Meese, journalist Fred Barnes, author Craig Shirley, and Drs. Martin and Annelise Anderson. • Eureka College implemented The Ivy Project: Historic Campus Construction with a ground breaking ceremony for a new $ 6 million, 28,000 square foot, three-story residence hall; and for renovations to existing residence halls, Vennum Binkley Hall, and the Mark R. Shenkman Reagan Research Center in the Melick Library. • Dr. Craig Barrett, former CEO of Intel, visited classes and met with student leaders on campus. • Faculty implemented a new freshman seminar class to introduce students to the liberal arts. • Dr. James W. Owens, former Chairman and CEO of Caterpillar, was the College’s first executive in residence. Dr. Owens visited classes, gave two public presentations, and met with students individually and in small groups. President’s Circle members, like you, are making a difference by being the catalyst for all of these dynamic events and achievements. Groundbreaking Ceremony. The ceremony featured a groundbreaking for a new $6 million, 28,000-square-foot, three-story residence hall. The event also included the announcement of $5 million in renovations to existing residence halls: Gunzenhauser Hall, built in 1928; Founders’ Court, 1966; Alumni Court, 1970; and Langston Hall, 1998. IMPROVEMENTS Last year: Harrod Lounge - 1,400 square foot area available for the 120 students who reside in Alumni Court.

Currently: OUR New Residence Hall is located just west of the existing Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house. It will have 28,000 square feet on three levels and will house approximately 100 students. The exterior will resemble nearby Langston Hall, with red bricks and white trim. The interior will feature what college officials are calling community living pods that include traditional double-occupancy rooms and shared bathrooms but with several wings that will include more lounges and meeting rooms than current residence halls. “The layout of the new residence hall will create a sense of community, with its multiple lounge spaces and meeting rooms that can accommodate all of the students living on that floor for meetings, studying, special programs and other social activities,” said Director of Residence Life Lisa Fischer. “Unlike suite-style and apartment living that can lose that sense of community, this layout greatly aids our residence life staff’s efforts to foster socialization and the feeling of ‘home’ for our residential students.” Mark R. STUDENT PHILANTHROPY
The Corporation for National and Community Service recognized Eureka College for its exemplary support of student volunteer work, service-learning, and civic engagement. This year’s
“Maroon and Golden Rule” service day highlights: • For the third straight year, Eureka College students held a community service day to provide Eureka College residents with free spring cleanup help and child care. • Funded from a grant from Illinois Campus Compact to promote leadership and citizenship.
Up ‘til Dawn student organization received the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award from the Central Illinois Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Over the past five years, Up ‘til Dawn has raised over $100,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which treats children with cancer and other diseases.
To benefit Heart House, a women’s shelter, Zane Ridings and a handful of freshmen men learned to knit and knitted over 80 hats and sold them at $10 a piece. 100% of proceeds went to Heart House. Each hat took over 3 hours to make, translating to approximately 250 community service hours. The Women’s Basketball team broke records on the basketball court last season (109 3-pointers!), raised their team grade point average from a 2.7 to a 3.3 and put in almost 600 community service hours.

Eureka College led the nation with the first conference to celebrate the Ronald W. Reagan Centennial. It was a resounding success. The goal of the conference was to remind the nation and the world of the importance of Ronald Reagan’s Midwestern roots. The noted historians captured the character and integrity of Ronald Reagan. In the words of author Peter Hannaford: “Reagan’s character can be defined in one word… Illinois”!

Last year 2,875 generous donors gave $ 3.3 million to Eureka College.
22% of Eureka College graduates gave a gift to support their alma mater.
Over $1.3 million was given to the College to support the Annual Fund. The Eureka College Phonathon alone raised over $126,000 to help meet that total.

As a part of the Reagan Legacy Foundation’s Liberty Tour programs, President Reagan’s son and former Eureka College trustee Mike Reagan brought students from Poland and America to see the place about which his father had once said “Everything that has been good in my life began here.” Former Governor Sarah Palin, who has written and spoken extensively about her admiration of Ronald Reagan, made a visit to the Reagan Museum and other sites. Ronald Prescott Reagan, son of Nancy and Ronald Reagan, made his first stop to campus. Ronald W. Reagan Society member Craig Barrett, former Chairman of Intel Corporation, spent time with the Reagan Fellows. Ronald W. Reagan Society member Michael Maibach, president of the EuropeanAmerican Business Council, spoke on campus about U.S. Competitiveness as a part of the Reagan Centennial Speakers Series. Reagan Fellows alumni Willie Wind (United States Secret Service), Carrie Thompson Wolf (Assistant Parliamentarian for the U.S. House of Representatives), and George Leal (Federal Prosecutor), returned to campus to speak to students and the public.
To kick off the centennial year, President Arnold announced that Ronald W. Reagan Society member Mark R. Shenkman of Greenwich, Connecticut, had committed the resources to help Eureka College construct a new center that would provide world-class archival care for the collections of the College and house every book ever written about Ronald Reagan, an estimated 950 books and manuscripts. The center is the first collegiate resource of its kind and was dedicated September 24, 2011 on the same steps Governor Reagan had dedicated the library 44 years earlier.
Honorary Reagan Fellow General P.X. Kelley, USMC (Ret.) Former Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, General P.X. Kelley, was named the third Honorary Reagan Fellow of Eureka College at a dinner ceremony held at the Ronald Reagan International Building in Washington, D.C. on the 21st anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, November 9, 2011. The event was co-chaired by FedEx founder Fred Smith, former Secretary of Defense Frank Carlucci, and Fred Fielding. Former Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H. W. Bush were honorary co-chairs. Proceeds from the event went to establish a scholarship named for General Kelley.
Reagan and the Midwest Academic Conference As his proud alma mater, Eureka College launched the centennial year with the first academic conference centered on Ronald Reagan’s roots. The conference, entitled Reagan and the Midwest, brought together scholars, former Cabinet officials, authors, and journalists including former Attorney General Edwin Meese, III, Reagan experts Drs. Martin & Annelise Anderson of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, best-selling author Craig Shirley, Weekly Standard Editor Fred Barnes, and author and former Reagan advisor Peter Hannaford.
Visiting Reagan Scholar Craig Shirley President Arnold named Craig Shirley first-ever Visiting Reagan Scholar at Eureka College. President of Shirley & Bannister in Alexandria, VA. and best selling author of Reagan’s Revolution and Rendezvous with Destiny: Ronald Reagan and The Campaign that Changed America, Mr. Shirley will teach a mini-course on Ronald Reagan open to students and the public in May of 2012.
Reagan Fellows Named For the 28th year, Eureka College named a new class of Reagan Fellows to the program established by President Reagan in 1982 at his alma mater. The Ronald W. Reagan Leadership Program offers 24 current Reagan Fellows full-tuition scholarships and opportunities to travel around the world to learn from mentors and to develop themselves in the servant leader mold of Ronald Reagan. Experiences of the Reagan Fellows range from working at a hospital in India, interning at the Sagamore Institute of Indianapolis (led by former Reagan Fellow Jay Hein), to interning at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in Simi Valley, California.
Governor Edgar speaks AT Ronald Reagan Society Dinner At the conclusion of the Reagan and the Midwest Conference, members of the Reagan Society gathered for their annual recognition dinner. Former Governor of Illinois, Jim Edgar, gave the keynote address on the topic of leadership and trust. Several hundred guests attended the lecture. Governor Edgar also serves as Eureka College’s Honorary Chairman of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Celebration.
Speaker Newt Gingrich Gives 150th Commencement Speech Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich toured the campus and met with Reagan Society members before speaking to the graduates and their families at the 150th Commencement Ceremony of Eureka College in Rinker Amphitheater. He announced his intentions to run for the 2012 presidency just two days prior to his visit to campus, but his remarks stressed the importance of Eureka College in American history. “I would argue to the national media that Eureka College can claim to be one of the most influential institutions in the last third of the 20th century,” Gingrich said.
