Season preview

2009 Season Outlook

The Bucs look to turn things around after a disappointing season in 2008, but things are looking bright as this year’s team is loaded with talented and experienced players. ETSU returns 14 players who saw valuable playing time last season including Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Paul Hoilman. Derek Trent also made a splash into Division I last year breaking the ETSU freshman home run record with 15. Head coach Tony Skole hopes to continue the offense output from last season as the Bucs hit .302 as a team and had a school record 78 home runs. ETSU has made some key additions to the team as Louisville Slugger High School AllAmerican Bo Reeder joins the squad along with several other talented freshmen. The Bucs will heavily rely on freshman and sophomore arms to fill the weekend rotation, and keep ETSU in games.

Catcher Junior Danny Petro and sophomore Derek Trent will battle for the starting job at catcher. Petro has started at catcher for the Bucs for the last two seasons, earning Atlantic Sun AllFreshman honors in 2007, while Trent had an outstanding freshman campaign. Freshman Skyler Barnett will add depth to the catcher’s position, and will back up Petro and Trent.

Infield 2008 Freshman All-American Paul Hoilman takes over at first base after leading the team in batting average (.353) and onbase percentage (.442) in 2008. Hoilman

was also second on the team in RBIs (47), doubles (18), runs (48) and slugging percentage (.598) after coming off the bench to start the season. Senior Ben Allen and freshman Garrett May will start in the middle for the Bucs. Allen had a good 2008 campaign, finishing the year hitting .303 and was the fifth toughest player in the nation to strike out, while May is a talented player who had a good fall and is quickly adjusting to the speed of the college game. Allen is also very good defensively as he led the team in assists (172) a year ago. Senior Chris Rankhorn and sophomore Chas Byrne will provide depth up the middle, as both will see substantial playing time. Last season the two combined for 55 hits, six doubles and 28 RBIs. Freshman Bo Reeder is set to start at the hot corner for the Bucs. Reeder is coming off of a very impressive fall and figures to be a very exciting player to watch.

Outfield The outfield is the deepest position for the Bucs this season as Troy Mendez, Jacob Fabry, Derek Trent, Chas Byrne, Matthew Scruggs and Cory Betterson will all battle for a starting position in the outfield. Mendez comes off of his most productive season in an ETSU uniform as he hit .332 with eight home runs and 36 RBIs. Mendez also has good speed as he was 4-5 in stolen base attempts last year. Fabry also had a good season last year as he hit for .299 with 22 RBIs and led the team with 12 stolen bases. Derek Trent and Chas Byrne saw plenty of time in the outfield last season and both bring solid fielding and speed to the outfield.

Freshmen Matthew Scruggs and Cory Betterson are also speedy and are quickly adjusting to the college game. Scruggs has the potential to be a very special centerfielder for ETSU, while Betterson is a talented athlete with a huge upside. Both Scruggs and Betterson give the Buccaneer coaching staff the ability to be flexible in the starting lineup in the outfield.

Pitching Josh Gonzaga, Bo Reeder, Chas Byrne, Taylor Gouffon and Bo Burton are in the mix for the starting rotation as Gonzaga, Reeder and Byrne seem to be the front runners to start on weekends. Gonzaga and Reeder looked impressive on the mound in their first fall at ETSU. Gonzaga is a southpaw with good stuff and is a competitor, while Reeder is a very talented player who has good velocity and locates well. Byrne has one of the most electric arms on the team, while Gouffon and Burton have the potential to be really good. The Bucs return an experienced bullpen that includes four seniors, a junior and a sophomore. Dustin Plumlee and Ben Andrews both had a good first year at ETSU as they combined for two of the team’s three saves last year. Plumlee will play a prominent role for the Bucs as he can start on the weekends or close games out. Both Darren Caldwell and Drew Story are competitors on the mound and will be used a lot, while Ben Allen and Paul Hoilman will pull double duty coming in at times to log innings for the Bucs as both have good live arms.

Tony Skole

Tony Skole Head Coach The Citadel, ‘91

Tony Skole enters his tenth season as the Buccaneer skipper. The Roswell, Georgia, native has brought confidence and respect to the East Tennessee State Baseball Program. A winning attitude, superb graduation rates, excellence in community service and a baseball team that is as close as a family are attributes that reflect on the man who will guide the Buccaneers into their fourth season in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

taken some time, but because of a strong commitment to our baseball program by our administration we have been able to recruit some very talented young men. It has been nice to see them mature into successful college athletes. An important goal for us is to become more consistent throughout the season. If we can do that then we feel like we will be in a position to contend for an Atlantic Sun Conference Championship and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.”

When Coach Skole came to ETSU in the fall of 1999 he found a program that was searching for strong leadership and a rebirth of success. He instantly instilled a sense of pride in those players who were wearing the blue and gold. “Making ETSU Baseball important again in the minds of our players, administration, alumni and community was our first objective,” said Skole. “We then wanted to develop a tradition that would be in our players’ hearts for the rest of their lives. Our players understand that ETSU Baseball is something that will be important to them their entire life, not just for the years they are on campus.”

Nationally known for being a great teacher of the fundamentals, Coach Skole and his staff are ensuring that Buccaneer baseball will become one of the nation’s top college programs and compete on a national level. “It has been our goal from day one to give ETSU a baseball program that will last, and one that will be worthy of postseason play every year,” Skole said. “We want to continue to raise the bar every year.”

“It has been very enjoyable and gratifying to see all the pieces of the puzzle come together,” says Skole. “My early years at ETSU were very difficult, but we knew it was going to be that way when we arrived. We have had to be very patient and it was frustrating at times, but we now have established a foundation and implemented our system. We have all of our own kids and coaches in the program that we have recruited and hired. This has made the biggest difference in our program since we have been here. During those early years we had to concentrate on breaking bad habits which ran deep inside our program. It was a little more challenging than we expected, but now I believe we have eliminated the things that were holding us back. We now can begin to create a new tradition — a winning tradition. It is nice to see our program start to develop. It has

2009 ETSU Baseball

The Buccaneers appear to have turned the corner the past four seasons, posting the program’s first back-to-back 30-win seasons since 1981-82 and averaging 29 wins a season during that span. The Buccaneers moved to a new home in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2006 and represented themselves very well, playing in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament championship game. This marked the first time in the history of ETSU that a baseball team had played in a conference tournament championship. Every year Coach Skole sets two major goals for the Buccaneer baseball program: 1) To develop quality young men who will come through the program and leave prepared to be successful for the remainder of their lives; and 2) To continue to make the ascent to be one of the premier baseball programs in the Atlantic Sun Conference and in the country. “These two goals represent a great deal of hard work, development and commitment,” says Skole. “We understand that baseball will end one day for every one of our players, whether they play professionally or not. We hope our program is a training ground to build a strong character and help them succeed in ‘life after baseball’. Qualities like personal accountability, sacrifice, work ethic, and a commitment to family are some of the things I hope our players gain while at ETSU. The second goal is obviously only obtained by producing a championship-caliber team, which encompasses the three major areas of coaching, recruiting and scheduling. “I am very proud of the young men currently in our program and the young men that have come through our program.

THE TONY SKOLE FILE Full Name: Tony Skole Birthdate: September 26, 1968 Education: Bachelor’s degree from The Citadel in 1991 Personal: Wife Jody (eleven years), three sons Tilo (age 9), Jack (age 6), and Gehrig (age 2) Playing Experience: Four-year letterman in both football and baseball from 1987-1991. Helped lead The Citadel to the College World Series in 1990. Coaching Experience: Head coach at Lincoln Memorial, (1996-99), Head coach at ETSU (2000-present).

They are special individuals and they all are earning their degree. Not only are they outstanding athletes but they are even better young men. We hold our baseball players to a very high standard here at ETSU and all of them must live up to it every single day. Our players are expected to succeed in the classroom, be involved in community service and conduct themselves like gentlemen at all times. There is a huge responsibility that comes with being a student athlete at the Division I level, and we want to make sure our players are accepting that responsibility.” Skole has coached 20 all-conference performers at East Tennessee State, including a school-record six in 2005. In addition to 2004 Southern Conference Player of the Year, catcher Caleb Moore, 2006 seniors Shane Byrne, Blake Church, Jeremy Hall and Chuck Hargis were all named to the team. In 2004, Moore arguably had the best season in ETSU baseball history, leading all NCAA Division I players in batting average (.455) and doubles (.60 per game). Following the season, Moore was named as a Louisville Slugger All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. Since Skole’s arrival 15 players have moved on into professional baseball, including five players drafted from the 2006 squad. Prior to becoming the head coach at ETSU, Skole served in the same capacity at Lincoln Memorial University. While at Lincoln Memorial, Skole helped turn a mediocre NAIA program into a nationally ranked NCAA Division II program. At LMU, Skole coached 20 AllConference players, three All-Americans and 25 All-Academic honorees. Seven of his former players at LMU were taken in the Major League Baseball draft. Two of those players, Scot Shields and Brad Voyles (both right-handed pitchers), made it up to the big leagues for their first time during the 2001 season. Shields is with the Anaheim Angels and pitched in and won a World Series Championship in 2002. He is considered one of the top relief pitchers in Major League Baseball. Voyles was with the

Kansas City Royals. Skole led his LMU team to a 95-57 (.630) record in three years. His squads were ranked as high as 13th in the country. Before becoming head coach Skole served as an assistant coach at LMU from 1992-1996. Skole graduated from The Citadel in 1991 where he established himself as one of the most popular athletes in the school’s history. Skole enjoyed a career on both the baseball diamond and football gridiron. In baseball, Skole helped guide the Bulldogs to two Southern Conference Championships, an Atlantic Regional Championship, and a berth in the 1990 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. It was Skole’s home run versus the University of Miami in the Atlantic Regional Championship game which propelled The Citadel into the College World Series.

Skole attended Roswell High School in Roswell, Georgia, where he earned 10 varsity letters in baseball, basketball and football. Skole received all-state recognition in all three sports, and is the only athlete in Roswell High School history to be named the Most Valuable Player in all three sports in a single year. During his career he led his teams in all sports to the state playoffs and in 1986 he was the catcher on the baseball team that won the state championship. Coach Skole enjoys reading, running, golf and spending time with his family. He and his wife Jody have been married for eleven years and recently completed the Atlanta Marathon together. They along with their three boys, Tilo (9) Jack (6) and Gehrig (2) reside in Johnson City.

Skole’s good fortune followed him to Omaha as he had the game-winning hit in the 12th inning to defeat Cal State Fullerton in The Citadel’s secondround victory. Skole ranked at or near the top in numerous alltime statistical categories when his career ended. During his football career, Skole started in 35 consecutive games and helped guide The Citadel twice to the NCAA I-AA national playoffs. In 1990, Skole led the Southern Conference in interceptions and in his senior year was selected Team Captain by his teammates.

Clay Greene/Reid Casey

Clay Greene Assistant Coach Tennessee, ‘97

Clay Greene enters his fourth season as an assistant coach at ETSU. He works primarily with outfielders and team base running, along with assisting head coach Tony Skole with the hitters and coordinating the Bucs recruiting efforts. With Greene on the staff the Bucs have seen some of its most productive offensive seasons including the most home runs in a season in 2008 and most hits in a season in 2006. “First of all I am very proud to have such a quality person on our staff,” Skole said. “Our program is producing successful young

men because we have good people like Coach Greene around them on a daily basis. To work for me you have to be passionate about baseball and passionate about helping young people become successful. He has these passions. “Coach Greene brings a lot of positives to our program and has been a great asset to ETSU Baseball. It has been very gratifying to watch him get better and better each year he has been with us. He has really grown as a teacher and especially as a recruiter. Coach Greene is on his way to becoming one of the top young, assistant coaches in our profession. He has experience at the highest levels of baseball and he has a very innovative and creative mind when it comes to teaching baseball. Coach Greene had a tremendous career as a player and he relates those experiences very well to our players.” Greene comes to ETSU after spending three years at the University of Tennessee as an assistant, helping guide the Volunteers to the College World Series in 2005. Prior to his coaching career, Greene also played for Tennessee from 1996-97, and spent four seasons playing professionally in the San Francisco farm system. Greene, who was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1997, played four seasons in the minor leagues. He began his career with Salem-Keizer in the short-season Northwest League before spending three seasons with the San Jose Giants in the Class A Advanced California League from 1998-2000. He also spent two years coaching at the Thunder Baseball School in Knoxville, Tenn.,

Reid casey

Assistant Coach East Tennessee State University, ‘02 Reid Casey enters his third season at his alma mater as a Buccaneer assistant coach. A former pitcher for head coach Tony Skole, Casey’s primary responsibility will be the pitching staff and assisting with recruiting. Casey pitched four seasons for the Bucs from 1999-2002, and holds several school records, including career marks for strikeouts (323) and innings pitched (410.1). “Coach Casey is on his way to becoming one of the top up and coming, young pitching coaches in the country. When he first arrived at ETSU we sort of threw him to the wolves. He arrived at mid semester and didn’t really have the opportunity to put his plan in place,” said head coach Tony Skole. “Now that he has had an opportunity to get settled, implement his program and develop a relationship with our pitchers, I’m sure our pitching staff will continue to get better and better. Reid brings a unique blend of professional baseball experience and college baseball experience to our staff.”

Following his career at ETSU, Casey spent two years playing in the Cleveland Indians organization, playing for the high A affiliate in Lake County of the South Atlantic League in 2003. While playing for Lake County, Casey was 1-0 with one save in seven relief appearances. After his playing days with the Indians, Casey joined the Jackson Senators of the old Central League. In the 2004 season, Casey led the team with 40 appearances while going 5-3 and compiling a 2.29 ERA. “As a former player of mine, not only was Coach Casey one of the finest pitchers I have ever coached, he was also one of the fiercest competitors I have ever seen take the mound,” Skole said. “I am excited about our pitching staff taking on his personality. Coach Casey is very passionate about pitching, a tireless worker, and he will have a great impact on the personal growth of our players, on and off the diamond.”

A powEr power Trio trio BUiLT built on ExTrEmE extreme pErFormAnCE performAnce TECHnoLogY. technology. When it comes to bat handles, stiffer is better. We’ve proven that year after year in championship after championship. Now, we’ve taken stiff-handle bat design to an extreme level with the Triton, H2™ and Exogrid®. These three power hitters get their performance from maximum handle stiffness. A stiffer handle produces more barrel flex, resulting in outstanding performance. See what Slugger stiffness can do for your game. Swing the Triton, H2 or Exogrid today.

Exogrid® The innovative Exogrid delivers power and performance through handle stiffness and strength. A time-tested performer that has been proven in championship after championship.

H2™ The next step in hybrid technology. The H2’s stiff handle and transition produces exceptional alloy barrel flex for great trampoline effect and performance.

TriTon Unique 3-zone design allows the barrel and handle to be designed and built as individual units. Exclusive Bubble Transition Zone brings everything together to function as an advanced 1-piece bat.

HYDROWORX Without a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

GENERAL ATHLETIC TRAINING AREA The general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

Strength and conditioning

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure, and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research. The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport teams 2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to coaches regarding coaching practices 3. Advising on the Training Process 4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 24th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC), ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual’s or team’s off-season conditioning program.

erforming well in the classroom is an expectation of student-athletes who wear the Buccaneer uniform. Not only are time management skills and self-discipline musts, but also dedication and commitment are needed from each individual student to maintain eligibility and progress toward graduation. ETSU Athletics provides many resources to assist the student-athlete in achieving his/her academic goals and in preparing ultimately for life after college. The staff not only advises students in scheduling classes and making academic progress, but offers support in the areas of group and individual tutoring, academic mentoring, career and personal counseling and life skills programming. Winning the right way

Winning the Women’s Basketball The ETSU women’s basketball team went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history after posting a program-tying 21-win campaign. The Lady Bucs stormed through conference play with an impressive 14-2 record and followed that up with three straight wins in the Atlantic Sun Tournament to receive the league’s automatic bid to the Big Dance. Along the way Michele DeVault and Siarre Evans received First Team All-Atlantic Sun accolades; head coach Karen Kemp was tabbed Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. Five Lady Buccaneer players were named A-Sun All-Academic, including TaRonda Wiles – who also was named to the All-Tournament Team. Joining Wiles on the tournament team were DeVault and Evans as well as Tournament MVP Latisha Belcher. As a team, ETSU ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring offense (14th), steals per game (18th) and assists per game (19th); DeVault ranked 12th in three-point field-goal percentage and 23rd in three-point field goals per game. DeVault also set a new all-time record with 239 treys made for her career.

Men’s Tennis After winning the Atlantic Sun regular season and conference tournament for the second straight season, the ETSU men’s tennis team earned its sixth trip to the NCAA tournament. This time around the No. 7th regionally ranked Bucs added to its program’s storied history by advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Notre Dame, 4-2, in Columbus, Ohio. Individually, junior Enrique Olivares earned All-America honors after becoming only the second Buccaneer to advance to the NCAA Round of 16, earning a final ITA ranking of eighth regionally.

Men’s Golf For the first time in school history, men’s golf became the only program at ETSU to ever compete in the NCAA Championships 20 times. Under the direction of head coach Fred Warren, the team built on its record number of NCAA appearances, while once again finishing with a trio of Top 20 national team rankings. In addition, senior Gareth Shaw was named PING All-American, marking the second straight year he has earned that honor.

Women’s Golf Women’s golf made history in 2007-08 by capturing the program’s first-ever conference title and earning its first trip to the NCAA Championships. The Bucs picked the perfect place to win their first Atlantic Sun Conference championship, doing so on their home course at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough. In addition, the Bucs watched sophomore Laura Jansone capture the A-Sun individual title as well, becoming the first woman to ever win a conference individual championship.

Current senior Enrique Olivares earned All-America honors after becoming only the second Buccaneer to advance to the NCAA Round of 16, earning a final ITA ranking of eighth regionally.

Shaw earned his second straight Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar award, becoming the first-ever ETSU player to be named to that list two years in a row. Shaw, who enjoyed his own successes on the course with three All-America selections, an Atlantic Sun individual championship, and a conference player of the year award, reached several impressive criteria to receive the award.

Jenny Knox Shattering school records was a common theme among the 2007-08 Buccaneer track /field team. Jenny Knox set a new time in the 100m, which resulted in her second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Mideast Regional. Knox also helped guide the women’s relay team to the Regional, and ended her career nationally ranked in the 100m as she finished the season 47th.

Yevgeniya Stupak Current senior Yevgeniya Stupak finished the 2007 season with an individual regional ranking of 14th, becoming the first-ever ETSU women’s tennis player to be ranked in singles and doubles regionally at the same time. After claiming 24 victories, including wins over No. 39 Yvette Hyndman of Georgia and No. 17 Amanda Taylor of Vanderbilt, Stupak became the first Lady Buc to qualify for the NCAA singles championship last May.
