ORNELAS STUDENT CENTER

Story by Hannah DeClerk, Marshall News Messenger East Texas Baptist University recognized a familiar name who has truly made her mark on the majority of its campus. “There is one woman in this room who has offered the main gift, and words cannot express what a difference she and her husband have made,” said ETBU President Samuel “Dub” Oliver. Dr. Louise H. Ornelas, a longtime donor to the university, was given the recognition of having her name stamped on the brand new new Louise H. and Joseph Z. Ornelas Student Center. The recognition was part of a dedication service Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, for the new 31, 852-square-foot, two-story facility. The $8 million it cost to build the facility was paid for by private donors, the bulk from Joseph and Louise Ornelas, who were the the lead donors. Ms. Ornelas said she is “happy the building is finally finished, since it has been in the works for some time.” “It definitely meets my expectations,” she added. Students began to enjoy the building when they returned from Christmas break on Jan. 10. The building is on the ETBU quad, a few steps from Marshall Hall. It includes a coffee and sandwich shop, Student Affairs and Student Government Association offices, post office, game room, copy center, chapel, and meeting rooms. “Our main focus, however, is to provide a place for our students,” said Oliver. “The type of community we have always desired is now taking place here.” Oliver added it was “not even 13 months ago when the last person moved out of Merle B. Hall.” Merle B. Hall was a dormitory, which for many years rested on the property before being demolished. ETBU sophomore Kallie Kent, who spoke at the ceremony, said everyone is “so excited to have the new building on campus. “It is such a surreal moment for me to see the new finished product,” said Ms. Kent. She said she has “pretty much spent every night in the building since it opened. “I know groups will meet here for years to come,” she said. EAST TEXAS BAPTIST UNIVERSIT Y w w w. et b u . e d u

COACHES were Tigers, throughout the history of the program, helped build a tradition of excellence and accountability every year, resulting in five conference championships, six division championships and postseason appearances in every year of the program’s existence. It’s that tradition and pride that Coach Shirley stresses every year and every day to her players now as head coach, and she encourages every one of her teams to leave its own mark on the program. And in 2010, the Tigers left an indelible stamp that will forever be in the history books. Shirley’s 2010 team -- just her third as head coach at ETBU -- started the season ranked No. 2 in the nation thanks to the return of several starters from a 2009 team that came within a couple of wins of advancing to the World Series. The Tigers were picked to repeat as ASC East Division champions and began the year as one of the top contenders in the nation. But a tough stretch of games in conference play left ETBU entering the final day of the regular season needing help elsewhere to finish third in the division and advance to the conference tournament. An 8-0 win over then-top-ranked Louisiana College at Taylor Field, coupled with a sweep of Mississippi College by UT Tyler in Tyler, sent the Tigers into the conference tournament field for an 11th straight year. The team’s struggles continued at the conference playoffs, with the Tigers finishing 2-2 and being eliminated on the second day of the threeday tourney. No automatic NCAA bid, no championships, nothing. ETBU was left to wait for over a week to find out if the NCAA would extend an at-large bid. New life came with the regional bids, as ETBU was selected for its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Tigers knocked off Mississippi College in the regional opener but then suffered a tough loss to upstart Southwestern in the second round. The Tigers were one loss away from a disappointing end to the season.

Janae Schlabs-Shirley HEAD COACH (4th season) Overall Record at ETBU: 105-36 (.745) As head coach of the ETBU Tigers softball program, Janae Shirley talks a lot about tradition. She knows as much as anyone about the history of the ETBU softball program, having played left field for the Tigers during her playing career that spanned the 2003 through 2005 seasons. She was the starting leftfielder on the 2004 ETBU team that won 40 games through the American Southwest Conference tournament that year, entering the ‘04 NCAA Tournament as the top-seeded team in the nation. The Tigers were a big favorite to advance to the College World Series and perhaps bring home the school’s and the ASC’s first national championship trophy. All those things happened eventually, just not during Shirley’s playing career. The Tigers were upset in the NCAA West Regional and never made it to the national championship. The program then entered a bit of a rebuilding phase from 2005 through 2008, with Shirley moving on to first an assistant coach position then becoming head coach following the 2007 season. But once becoming head coach, Shirley never forgot what it was like to win multiple ASC championships, or play with national recognition. She never forgot all the All-American teammates she played with, or heard about before she came into the program. All the talented players who

That’s when history began for Shirley’s Tigers. Beginning with an extra-inning victory over arch-rival Texas-Tyler, ETBU survived four straight door-die contests to win the regional tournament, including a pair of tight, pressure-packed victories against tournament host and ASC champion Louisiana College -- at LC’s home field. The wins were the first for ETBU in Pineville, La., since the ‘04 team swept a regular-season doubleheader there, a span of a dozen straight road losses to LC. The Tigers’ 2-0 win in the regional championship sent ETBU to its longawaited, first-ever berth in NCAA Division III World Series, in Eau Claire, Wis. Having generated championship momentum the week before, the Tigers capped off the national title season by going 4-0 at the World Series and winning the trophy with a come-from-behind, walk-off 5-4 win over Linfield College in the title game. Through it all, Coach Shirley continued to preach to her team about “leaving their mark on the program.” With the university’s first NCAA championship -- and first by an ASC school in softball -- the 2010 Tigers had taken that message to heart. “I’m so proud of these girls most of all because they are all great people and they want to glorify God in all that they do,” Shirley said in the national championship postgame press conference. “Being a former player and understanding what it means to be a lady Tiger, I know I speak for all the players who have come through our program that we are proud of what this team has accomplished.” After her playing career ended in 2005 following back-to-back seasons as the starter in left field at ETBU, Shirley continued to work with the program as an assistant coach. She got two years of valuable seasoning from her 2004 head coach, Kent Reeves, the all-time coaching wins leader for Tiger softball. Following the 2007 season, after two years as first-base coach and recruiter, Janae was promoted to the head coaching position. Her first team, in 2008, showed flashes of potential. ETBU started the season by winning 9 of its first 10 games and returning to the Top 25 poll for

COACHES the first time since 2004. The new coach had quickly put her stamp on the program, with eight of the nine Tigers named to the All-ASC East team that year having been recruited by Shirley. But after the hot start, the team finished 17-14 down the stretch and ended with a third-place finish in the ASC East and another conference tournament appearance. The Tigers fortified their roster with more recruiting, and the 2009 season again produced big-time results. ETBU shocked the conference by winning the ASC East Division for the first time since the 2004 season, and the Tigers were selected to host the program’s first-ever NCAA regional tournament. The Tigers were one of two undefeated teams remaining at the double elimination tournament on the next-to-last day of the championship, but two one-run, heartbreaking losses ended the year with a 39-9 mark. Through three seasons as head coach, Shirley has posted a 105-36 record, a winning percentage of .745. Her 100th coaching victory came in the first elimination game of the 2010 regional at Pineville, La., when the Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to steal a 3-2 victory over rival Louisiana College and send ETBU to its first regional championship game. During her playing career, the Tigers made two straight trips to the NCAA Tournament from 2003-04. The program also won the final two of its five straight ASC championships. Shirley earned All-ASC East honors as a senior in 2005, her second year as a starter. She endured an injury-filled first season at ETBU after transferring from Midland College but returned in 2004 to take over the starting job in left field, hitting .290 in 39 games. She also committed just one error.

A native of Hereford, Texas, Janae is the daughter of Ray and Charla Schlabs. She received a B.S.E. in Biology from ETBU in May of 2005 after received an associate’s degree from Midland College in 2002. Janae played volleyball, basketball, softball and also ran track at Hereford High School, where she graduated in 2000. At Midland College, she played on a squad that finished fourth at the NJCAA national tournament.

Her senior season in ‘05 saw her post a perfect record defensively, with no errors in 42 chances.

Janae and her husband, Guy, were married in the summer of 2007. Guy is a former ETBU baseball player who also works on staff as assistant softball coach. Janae and Guy welcomed their first child, son Carter, in October of 2009.

COACHES assistant coach. He continued to work with the program’s pitchers and in general off and on through the 2007 season. When that season ended, Shirley was named head coach. Her first move was to promote Galloway to a full-time top assistant coach on staff.

Bill Galloway ASSISTANT COACH It is a comfortable feeling for ETBU head softball coach Janae Shirley during a game when she knows at any time she can lean on the knowledge and experience of a coaching Hall of Famer who has over 900 Division I head coaching victories on his resume. The Tigers are certainly fortunate to have Bill Galloway on staff for that very reason. Shortly after retiring following a 20-year run as head coach at Louisiana Tech, Coach Galloway joined the ETBU staff in 2003 as a part-time

“Coach Galloway offers so much to me as a coach and to our program as a whole,” Shirley says. “The experience and knowledge that he brings to our staff is priceless. He has a deep knowledge of pitching and also has a wealth of contacts all over the country that are a tremendous asset in our recruiting efforts. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with and learn from a coach with such experience, and one that I respect so much.” Coach Galloway was inducted into the NFCA Hall of Fame in 2001 and spent 20 years as head softball coach at Louisiana Tech. He joined the Lady Tiger staff as a part-time pitching coach in 2003 and 2004, then rejoined the program on a part-time basis in 2006. Galloway has a wealth of fast-pitch coaching experience at the Division I level following stints as head coach at Louisiana Tech and Texas A&M. He has a 934-421 record (.689 winning percentage) at D-I, and his Louisiana Tech teams posted at least 30 wins in a season 16 times. That includes a 52-18 mark in his first season in Ruston in 1982. The Lady Techsters made seven straight trips to the NCAA postseason under Galloway from 1983-89, including a fifth-place finish in the 1983 World Series. Overall, Tech finished with eight playoff appearances under Galloway. In his career, Galloway had 11 players selected as All-American and has 10 former players currently working as head coaches at the collegiate level. He has coached 44 Regional All-Americans, and his players’ graduation rate ranks in the top 20 percent of NCAA schools. In just his second season on staff at ETBU as part-time pitching coach in 2004, the Lady Tigers went 41-5 and finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation in NCAA Division III. The ETBU staff that season, with Galloway serving as pitching coach, posted a 1.34 ERA and had four players -- Mandie McConnell, Kristen Abernathy, Ashley Stout and Carrie Mills -- finish with at least seven wins. The staff also held opponents to a .213 batting average in 46 games. Over the last two years, Galloway has coached a pitching staff that led ETBU to 79 victories. During that span, the team’s staff ERA is 1.52. A 1978 graduate of Indiana University, Galloway holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Russian-Soviet Studies. He has also served in the United States Army. Coach Galloway and his wife, Liguya, moved to Marshall from Ruston, La., in 2007

ETBU ATHLETICS KENT REEVES

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics 903-923-2228 klreeves@etbu.edu Entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in two athletics programs at ETBU, originally stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 10 in 2010, with men’s and women’s tennis set to be added in the fall of 2011. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with nine conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 41 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship last spring. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football and soccer. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the lady Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons, finishing with a program-record 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, a student at Baylor University.

ETBU ATHLETICS ATHLETICS FACILITIES

ORNELAS STADIUM Football

TAYLOR FIELD Taylor Field serves as the home for the 2010 NCAA Division III national championship ETBU softball program. The facility has received several upgrades and facelifts since its original construction prior to the 1998 season, when ETBU fielded its first fastpitch program as a member of the Heart of Texas Conference and then moving to the American Southwest Conference a year later. There are several noticeable changes at Taylor Field this year, other than the national championship banner that will forever hang on the fence as a reminder of the title run the Tigers generated in the spring of 2010. ETBU will move its home dugout to the first base side this season, to have the Tigers on the same side of the field as a brand new covered batting cage that was constructed this offseason outside the right-field foul line. A new Tiger bullpen is also being constructed. Visiting teams will now use the third-base dugout.

ORNELAS GYMNASIUM Volleyball, Basketball

A section of the right field fence has been cut down as well, as a new home run porch has been added just to the fair side of the foul pole. “The Century 21 Tiger Den” will be a special place for fans to gather and enjoy the game from a different perspective. A wooden deck sits just above the shortened fence and will hold chairs and picnic tables for fans on game day. New lights were added to the facility prior to the 2009 season. Prior to that, ETBU renovated the Taylor Field press box behind home plate in 2005 into a two-story brick structure with new climate-controlled press area on the second floor. A Tiger locker room and fan restroom comprises the first floor of the press box.

WOODS FIELD Baseball

The facility hosted the 2009 NCAA West Regional, as ETBU hosted seven of the top teams in the nation from Texas, Louisiana, California and Oregon. Taylor Field opened in 1998 along with the new softball program at ETBU. The orginal gift for the facility was provided by Earl and Louise Taylor. Distances to the foul poles are 190 feet from home plate, with distance to center field

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across the 422,060 square miles of the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement to conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference embodies a multidimensional mission aimed at creating an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for its conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities. Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. To guarantee the integrity of the association, the membership is committed to furthering the philosophy and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Conference. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2010-11 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.
