A BUBBLING SPRING The “Printemps de la Typo” at the Estienne school, the International Poster and Graphic Arts Festival in Chaumont, a season of Graphic Arts in Le Havre, Designers’ Days in Paris, lectures (Robin Kinross, Matthew Carter, Office abc, “Knowledge in Architecture and Graphic Design” in Valence, and Graphic Art Today at the Cneai), workshops (Processing Paris, the WaWaWorkshop), exhibitions (Vincent Perrottet, Philippe Millot, Etienne Robial)… Spring is on the way, a new season is about to begin, and with it, a whole series of events devoted to graphic design are lined up, showing how dynamic this sector is in France, with everyone wanting to share their methods and challenges. Schools are opening their doors at the end of the month and showing their students work – another opportunity to go and discover where teaching and curricula are headed right now. And there is plenty happening too beyond our borders: 100 Years of Swiss Graphic Design at the Zurich Museum, the Fernand Baudin Prize award ceremony in Brussels, and for anyone visiting New York in the next few months, there’s the “Millennium Magazines” exhibition at MoMA. This is not a Mountain Graphic artist, illustrator and photographer, Luis Dourado contorts geography and distorts space. In his Untitled Map series, he cut up maps of the world and rearranged the continents as he so desired. Departure questions the immutability of mountains when confronted with man’s imagination or digital manipulation. Semitones Roman Sherbakov (aka Dase) uses contrast and matter to portray the perceptible world. His play of light and textures is a plea for a reality that collides with the nature of digital images. In half-tones and muted tints, his monochromes lead into several kingdoms: living and mineral; natural and built. His sources of inspiration can be found in urban landscapes: the atmosphere of rainy mornings, daybreak and dusk, light on a summer night. Hand-crafted Illustrations An illustrator always on the move, Camille Lavaud draws her inspiration from words, images and music. Her unpretentious approach needs little more than a desk, playlist, sheet of paper and pen. She gets her ideas from the environment she finds herself in; to express them on paper, she makes lists of words, adding colours, collages or fabric appliquĂŠs. These visually unstable, hand-crafted illustrations refer to multiple sources, from Italian disco music to the hardcore punk band Minor Threat. CL www.camillelavaud.com 14

Animal Faces: Hybrids As part of the exhibition “2062, Back and Forth to the Future” now running at the Parisian digital art space, the Gaîté Lyrique, the collective Pleix has produced an interactive installation that presents a series of Geneviève Gauckler’s hybrid animals. As onlookers approach the screens, these creatures gnash their teeth, are clad in an array of objects or plants, as their eyes light up, change colour or shoot forth electric daggers. Graphics in France The 18th edition of the catalogue Graphisme en France examines the question of programming tools in graphic design today. In addition to the calendar of graphic design exhibitions and related events planned for 2012, three contributing authors present their different views on the subject. After more than 15 years of computer-assisted graphic design, information technology remains a mystery for the majority of graphic artists and few practitioners dare to dabble too deeply. EESAB (École européenne supérieure d’art de Bretagne) graduate Kevin Donnot puts programming into its historic context and discusses the position of the designer and the role of software tools in the creative process. Art historian and teacher Annick Lantenois outlines her thoughts on incorporating programming into educational syllabuses and professional practices. Lastly, Casey Reas and Chandler McMullan team up and propose a selection of graphic designs for which programming and invention software were integrated into the design process. Each edition of this CNAP (Centre national des arts plastiques) publication is entrusted to a different graphic designer. Pentagon, the studio founded in 2010 by Vanessa Goetz, Guillaume Allard and Johann Aussage, was awarded the commission for 2012. After writing several programmes, they developed a system that produced a numbered, one-off cover for every copy of the book. Each uses typography by Christian Schwartz (in Stag Light, Stag Thin and Stag Sans Regular) and two kinds of paper. So both the contents and the container may be described as precious objects. Point the Way Vincent Autin’s end-of-study project in product design at La Martinière Diderot, Lyon, culminated in his Girouette signposts. His work, based on augmented reality, eventually moved away from individual interfaces (smartphones and tablets) to settle in urban spaces and generate interaction between city residents. His multidirectional signs swivel round on their posts and are connected to social networks, so as to send messages and recommendations from passers-by: an exhibition or concert worth seeing, somewhere special to be visited. All people need do is put a message on Twitter and the GPS will transmit the information to the right destination. Having found backing from a private investor and the laboratory Erasme, Autin produced three prototypes, which were shown at the 2011 Biennale de Lyon and the Cité Internationale. For the present, the LED-based graphic design is minimal. Yet with the use of electronic paper, the interface could soon progress in leaps and bounds. CB HTTP://IGIROUETTE.FR HTTP://VINCENTAUTIN.FR

The Bouroullec Brothers Go Digital The French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have arrived on iPad in an application called Cercles. It presents the work they have been exploring for the past 15 years. All in all, a compilation of 200 drawings and models that coincided with their exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz. In pencil, felt-tip, biro, or on fabric cutouts, their collected sketches provide insight into the their creative process. The sequence in the brothers’ studio shows just how central these sketches are to their working method: they are indispensable phases in the transition from idea to object. All these “imperfect supports” attest – in somewhat disorderly fashion – to their creative investigations. Designed by Felipe Ribon and Alain Bellet, the intuitive app lets visitors navigate its content in a linear or random manner, with very high definition images viewable on a white background.
