Members & Readers

Message from the President Doyle T. Phillip, FCPE, CCCA, CPC National President

Exciting times ahead for ASPE! I have to feel sorry for those of you who could not make the Estimating Academy and Annual Business Meeting in Indianapolis this year. Attendees were carried into a world of virtual reality; given access to continuing education; and treated to a lot of great fellowship, food and fun. There were workshops on membership, and expectations of serving in an officer capacity at the local chapter level and beyond. The business session was one of the shortest in history, which left a lot of time to begin the President’s party early to everyone’s pleasure. I must begin by thanking all of you for your vote of confidence in selecting me to help lead our society through the next year. I want to welcome the entire board and thank them for stepping up to service. These volunteers give a lot of their time and financial resources to work for the society and we all owe them our gratitude. We have four new board members in our group this year, one Vice-President and three Governors. Please join me in giving a warm welcome to TJ Schwertfeger, CPE, Chuck Hesselbein, CPE, Jim Hanna, CPE, and Mike Alsgaard, CPE. They will all be huge assets to our board. Thanks to Chris Morton, CPE for providing an excellent workshop on Governor training that was well received by all. During my incoming President’s remarks, given Friday night at the Awards Banquet, I talked about the power of “one”. “One” not in the selfish perception, but as in “one” voice. How powerful could our organization become if each of us individually invited a potential member to a meeting, reached out to someone in need, mentored another individual, wrote one article for Estimating Today, volunteered for a committee, or assisted someone in reaching one of their goals? Each of these selfless acts, when combined together, work to make us all stronger as individuals, a local group, and as a national organization. I want to challenge everyone during this coming year to find your power of “one”! If we work on growing ourselves professionally, our great society will be the benefactor of that growth. Look for a lot of exciting things taking place in the upcoming year. There are new committees being formed to target higher education. The Awards program is being reworked to bring emphasis back to special accomplishments. The revised Pie exam is being released. The new and improved Standard Estimating Practice 9th Edition is available for purchase. I invite everyone to buckle up and get ready for the ride because exciting times are ahead and you will not want to miss them! May God Bless you each and every day!

ASPE Annual Meeting My First Time A National Convention Recap

A New Prespective

I’m sitting on the plane after my first national convention. I have been to one regional in 2013 so I had an idea of what to expect at a convention. Classes, caucuses, mingling and networking but national was so much more.

By: Stacie Flynn ASPE Denver #5

Being my first national convention I registered for everything I could. I took the two day estimating academy, I didn’t need the credits; I wanted to learn. The topics were issues that either I relate to daily or sounded interesting to me. The classes brought on discussions and with attendees from across the country they were fascinating. I wasn’t disappointed. It is great to be surrounded by people’s passion for their careers and our industry. It helped bring part of mine back too. After the academy, the convention began. The first day was workshops related to membership and by-law amendment reviews. As a society we struggle with member retention and getting members involved. We all face different challenges across the country and there isn’t an easy solution or answer as to why others don’t want to participate. I could write another article on my personal frustrations as to why people join a society yet do not show interest in meetings, fundraisers and events. It was helpful to hear my chapter wasn’t alone and that it wasn’t due to shortcomings as a first year chapter president. When you believe in an organization, a cause to bring awareness, a vehicle for scholarships like we all did in that room it’s hard to comprehend why others don’t. We exchanged ideas for meetings, advertising, fundraising events and I am excited to implement some this coming year.

(Right) Stacie Flynns accepts the Chapter Achievement Award for Outstanding Chapter for Denver #5.

That evening was the awards banquet preceded by a cocktail party. As a first time attendee I was invited with others to sit at Joe Flemming’s, outgoing national president, table. As the awards were given out, some not so formal, I found myself gaining a vested interest in the recipients’. We laughed, some cried, we applauded. Three days earlier I barely knew anyone and that night I was elated for these colleagues. It is nice to be recognized for jobs well done. All too often we criticize and critique and forget to reward. It was a great banquet. The last day was business. Regional meetings were held in the morning and the business session in the afternoon. The national officer installation was nice. Standing before you, proud members ready to serve and preserve the society. Later that night, the last evening, we had dinner and live entertainment. As I looked around the room, at the people smiling, laughing, the years of wisdom in the industry, these people I had not known days before, I was smiling too. I was glad that I came to Indianapolis. So as I descend back home into Denver, back to the daily grind tomorrow, I seem to have a renewed excitement for my career, my chapter and the society. I look forward to applying what I learned from the academy, workshops and fellow attendees. I look forward to seeing my new friends again next year in San Diego and meeting new ones. Thank you all for making me feel welcome for my first time

at a national convention.

A Personal View . . . ASPE National Convention – Indianapolis, Indiana ASPE National Convention – Indianapolis, Indiana I wish I would have been more familiar with ASPE and all that it stands for back when I began estimating 18 years ago. What an incredibly supportive group of people! All of the ethics and fairness and accuracy I have tried to embrace over the years is summed up in one organization. To be fair, I did become aware of the organization many years ago as one of my first employers was a member, but the organization itself only really came up once or twice in discussion. He taught me the “rules” of estimating on his own and it’s just something I’ve always held dear. Finally, I am a member of this elite group that holds each other to that higher standard. No longer is estimating just “bid collecting”. There is a process to it, and I feel justified in all of the work I’ve tried to put into it over the years. My overall experience coming to my very first ASPE convention was extremely good. The ability to meet with other professionals that really “get it” and that really do hold each other accountable for the work that they do. I’m even more proud to be a part of this group than I was when I first joined. It’s brought a new urgency to accuracy and fairness in evaluating bids from other trades and in making sure my take-offs and estimates are fully thought out as well. I enjoyed the comradery, discussions, and honors bestowed on those who truly have gone above and beyond to make this organization what it is today. I only hope that I can bring as much to the table one day as some of these others. As a brand new member and brand new Chapter President, I hope to do just that. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the convention, meeting other estimating professionals and networking with other people that do what I do. Having just started my own estimating consulting business, it’s really nice to know there are others in this game with me. I only wish that I would have had more time to explore the city. After the first night, I was quite disappointed when the hotel staff advised us to “stay inside” for the rest of the weekend for our own safety due to other organizations being in town that had caused issues in the past. When I go to conventions, I typically bring my wife and daughter with me. We had been looking forward to doing some site seeing and unfortunately we were stuck in the hotel pretty much the entire weekend. A safer venue and a little more “free time” would have been nice, but even this didn’t tremendously detract from the overall experience since I was there as a “new” face and wanted to spend as much time as I could networking and getting to know the other professionals. All in all it was a great experience and I applaud the Central Indiana Chapter for hosting the event and doing the very best they could with what they had and the situations at hand. Thank you to everyone that made this an overall positive experience for a first timer! Sincerely,

Micah J. Hessinger, CSI, CDT Estimating Systems, LLC President - Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter #41

National Scholarship Winner

Jacob Luna Farmington, IL STUDENT ESSAY Essay Topic: What would Be the Benefits of a Career in Estimating? I first became interested in the construction industry after visiting New York City in 2010. During our last day in Manhattan, we took a subway to ground zero to see where the Twin Towers once stood. I remember looking through the chain link fence that separated the public from the construction site and thinking how amazing it would feel to be part of a project that is so important to our country and that will be visited by people all over the world. This elite group of people who were given the chance to work on this project could forever say that they were a part of it. As we walked around Manhattan I spent most of the time with my head turned upward, gazing at the massive buildings that surrounded me. My trip to New York is what sparked my interest in the construction industry. After my freshman year at Bradley University I was offered an internship with P.J. Hoerr, a general contractor in Peoria, IL. During the course of my two years at P.J. Hoerr I have been serving as the company estimating intern. My responsibilities as an estimating intern include sending out ITBs, tracking bid statuses, managing all bid proposals, and providing senior estimators with take-off quantities. I have learned a colossal amount about estimating in my two years at P.J. Hoerr. In fact my experience has been so good that I am now confident that I want to go into estimating after I graduate. Estimating is one of the most important parts of the entire construction process because an estimate sets a job up for success or failure. One of my professors once told me that estimating is as much of an art as it is a science. Not everyone has the ability to provide estimates. It takes an immense amount of organization, wit, and communication skills. Estimating demands these traits and the process of estimating can help anyone improve them. Estimating is also a great field because an estimator gets to experience so many different things. A typical project manager may be placed on a large job that lasts well over a year, but an estimator may see five jobs go across their desk in just one week. This helps keep the job fresh and interesting day after day. A career in estimating also has thebenefit of being a position that typically involves less travel. Since estimating is an office job there is usually less travel involved compared to a superintendent or project manager who has to travel to a job site. I view this as a major benefit of estimating, espe-cially ifl end up starting a family. Lastly, estimating is incredibly exciting and rewarding. It is hard for me to think of any other career in which companies are able to provide competitive bids in the same way construction does. I will never forget the adrenaline rush of my first bid day. It is enough to keep you coming back to work every day ready to tackle the next bid. Estimating is an incredibly challenging and rewarding field that offers its professionals a wide range of benefits. The career of a professional estimator is not for everyone, but those who choose it will be rewarded with an exciting work environment. I someday hope to become a professional estimator. I can't imagine a career better suited to my specific skill set.

2014 President’s Award Recipient

A Heartfelt Thank You Patsy and Joe, On Tuesday evening at the Chapter 6 ASPE monthly dinner meeting I was presented with the 2014 Presidents Award. I am sorry I wasn't at Indianapolis to receive it directly from you. I wanted to thank both of you for the honor of receiving this prestigious award. I was also told of the kind words that were spoken of me and my willingness to give to the society. As I am sure both of you know, I do this because of a career and profession that has been very good to me and to hopefully show others that giving back is as much fun as receiving. Membership and participation in ASPE has enabled me to do this as well as cultivate some life long friends that had I not joined, I would not have the benefit of these dear friends, yourselves included. I will continue to help in any way that I can and in fact, I have made provisions in my estate trust for a donation to be given to ASPE upon my passing. Hopefully they will not see this for a long time.

Charles “Pete” Zoller, CPE Arizona Chapter #6

Patsy M. Smith Executive Director Wording of the Anniversary Announcement Plaque 2003-2004 Board of Trustees This year, 2014, is the ten-year anniversary of Patsy Smith’s service to our Society. In late 2003 the Board of Trustees decided to make a change in the administration operation of the Society. This started with a complete reorganization of the Society Business Office (SBO) in Wheaton, Maryland. Patsy was interviewed and hired as Interim Director of Administration with the directive to do whatever was necessary to improve the function and operation of the SBO. Essentially she had to start from scratch, hiring new staff, reviewing our financial status, updating the office equipment, installing new software – all while maintaining the everyday operation of service to members.

Patsy Smith accepting the Anniversary Announcement Plaque

After six successful months as Interim Director, she was hired as the permanent Director of Administration. Her next challenge was to relocate the SBO to a Central Time Zone location in order to provide more time for members on both coasts to interact with the office staff. She searched for and found space in a modern, pleasant office park near the Nashville airport and oversaw the arduous task of closing the Wheaton office, packing and moving the office with minimal impact on the daily operations. Since the move to Nashville, with the approval of the BOT, she has worked tirelessly to improve the efficiency of the staff, installed the best hardware and software available for publications and operations, added office space in order to have Board and committee meetings in-house and generally improved the quality and image of ASPE’s place in the construction industry.
