Senior will seek third straight state title BY DAVID SWARTZ MANAGING EDITOR

SPIRIT LAKE — The Spirit Lake wrestling team will be hard pressed to repeat the success of a year ago in the 2012-13 season. However the Indians, ranked 10th in Class 2A to start the season, still will give teams a good battle this season. Spirit Lake’s top returning wrestler is senior Doug Miner.

After winning consecutive state titles at 106 pounds the past two season, Miner is the top-ranked wrestler at 120 pounds this year. After 50 straight wins a year ago, Miner is starting the 201213 season with a 13-1 mark. However his one loss came at the hands of a North Dakota wrestler. Another returning state qualifier from a year ago is Zach Skopec. The junior is ranked fourth at 138 pounds and is 14-0

with many wins at 145 pounds. Look for him to settle at 138 pounds as the season progresses. At 152 pounds, senior David Trucksess is ranked sixth in Class 2A. He’s off to an 11-2 start with both losses by decision to Minnesota wrestlers. Kenten Murray is a junior off to a fast start and should see time at 145 pounds as Skopec drops to 138. At 106 pounds, freshman Gate Roberts is off to a 4-7 record.

Another freshman, John O’Neal, has wrestled at both 106 and 113 pounds this season. Sophomore Ben Parks has seen time at 126 and 132 pounds. Another freshman, Ethan Bergendahl has helped out at 138 pounds. At 160 pounds is senior Hayden Wilson with junior Javier Tapia at 170 pounds. Junior Jacob Jenness (182), senior Brady Mart (195), Cody Wernimont (195, 220) all have

helped fill in the varsity lineup. Senior Cody Norton is at heavyweight and off to a 9-3 start this season. The Indians will battle Class 2A No. 5 Spencer and Class 1A No. 3 Emmetsburg for the top spot in the Lakes Conference. Spirit Lake has opened the conference season with a 4-0 record with wins over Western Christian/Unity Christian, Estherville Lincoln Central, Cherokee and LeMars.
