LOCAL NEWS KEEPING YOU UP TO DATE

RIDE FOR HELEN IS BACK

Ride for Helen is back on Sunday 13th May for its fifth year and promises to be one of the region’s biggest and best cycling events in 2018 for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity! (HRCC) Cyclists from across the county will be meeting at the Crix in Hatfield Peverel, Essex to take part in this fantastic, family-friendly event which offers a choice of cycling routes to suit all capabilities; 6 miles, 15 miles, 35 miles, 65 miles and new 100 miles.

CLASSIC IBIZA EVENT SET TO SELL-OUT

Following the resounding success of Classic Ibiza with Ministry of Sound in 2017, the high demand for tickets at this year’s concert at Hatfield House, on Saturday 1st September, indicate that it will sell-out ahead of schedule. So, sign up now if you don’t want to miss The Urban Soul Orchestra, DJ Goldierocks and a host of live vocalists performing some of the biggest dance tracks from the last 20 years. The evening starts with a chill-out set where people can enjoy their picnics and a drink, or dance along as the sun fades. Then DJ Goldierocks will turn things up in the interval, getting the crowd into the mood before the USO and vocalists return to the stage to ramp things up into full, party mode. The second set last year started with Fat Boy Slim’s “Right Here Right Now” and Insomnia’s “Faithless”. The euphoric crowd responded by getting on their feet and dancing, while the accompanying lasers turned the setting into a magical, alfresco nightclub. One classic dance track followed another and the atmosphere was electric. This year’s set list will include a number of new tracks that are sure to thrill the crowd. In addition to the amazing artists, what really sets Classic Ibiza apart is that it is a concert for all the family. Set in the delightful outdoor setting of Hatfield House, with easy access to transport links, concert goers can bring their own food and drink, or take advantage of numerous stalls selling high-quality street-food and refreshments. For full event details and tickets visit www.classicibiza.co.uk or call the event box office on 01283 841601.

New Festival Announced

MP SUPPORTS DISABILITY CHARITY’S #MAKECAREFAIR CAMPAIGN

Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing joined the Leonard Cheshire disability charity at a parliamentary event to highlight its #MakeCareFair campaign for good quality social care and an end to rushed 15-minute personal care visits which can deprive people of dignified and compassionate care. More than 12,000 people are still receiving ‘flying’ 15-minute personal care visits across England, according to Freedom of Information requests by Leonard Cheshire, a leading disability charity.

Liam Gallagher and Stereophonics have been announced to headline the brand new RiZE Festival which will take place at the iconic Hylands Park in Chelmsford on Friday 17th and Saturday 18th August 2018. Celebrating its very first year RiZE Festival brings together an exciting mix of the very best music from classic indie, pop, urban, dance and new upcoming talent across four stages. Hylands Park has a history of hosting world class events and this new local festival promises to bring an incredible weekend of live music plus a huge hub of the best food and drink on the festival circuit. Liam Gallagher will headline the main stage on Friday night. Releasing one of the biggest albums of 2017 ‘As You Were’, the album debuted at number one in the UK, outselling the rest of the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart combined and achieving gold certification in its first week. One of Britain’s best live bands Stereophonics will make their festival return this summer headlining RiZE Festival, TRNSMT festival in Scotland and two huge stadium shows in Wales. Also performing are James Bay, Manic Street Preachers, Bastille, Maxïmo Park, Years & Years, Plan B, Rag’n’Bone Man, Dave, Rita Ora, Example & DJ Wire, Tokio Myers, MNEK, Disciples, Sinead Harnett, The Manor as well as Craig David’s world famous TS5 show. Many more acts will also be announced across four stages. Tickets are priced from just £59.50+BF and are on sale now, please visit www.rizefestival.co.uk for official outlets.

Mrs Laing said: “I was delighted to join Leonard Cheshire Disability in support of their #MakeCareFair campaign. These 15-minute personal care visits rob too many people of their dignity and are completely unacceptable.” The charity has long campaigned against the use of 15-minute personal care visits to support people with basic needs such as washing, dressing and eating. These can deprive people of dignified and compassionate care. Leonard Cheshire’s chief executive Neil Heslop said: “As we approach the long-awaited government green paper on social care, the situation is tough in the sector. Inadequate flying visits are indicative of a care system in crisis and coupled with PIP shortcomings have rendered disabled people an increasingly embattled, beleaguered community, singled out for punitive measures. We will continue to campaign for the critical long term funding that is needed to transform the provision of care and improve the quality of thousands of lives.”

GET SOCIAL

The New Eatery in Debden is a Very Tasty Affair

When Jane and Marc Linch opened the Green Owl Café & Deli in Buckhurst Hill almost five years ago, the idea was to create a foodie haven for residents and people working in the area. They weren’t novices and this wasn’t a passion project; their ‘idea’ was based of years of experience working in the fine food and hospitality industry and their love of good food. “You can dress up food to look fabulous,” says Jane, “but it must have amazing flavours to match, and that requires top quality ingredients and exciting recipes.” Together with chef Alessandro, they created new dishes, gave family favourites a twist and always made sure that everything on the menu tasted as good as it looked. The ‘welcome’ was important too and Jane’s talent for interiors ensured you felt relaxed the minute walked in. She sourced miss-matched second-hand wooden furniture and combined this with interesting vintage pieces and warm lighting. The formula

proved so popular, that Jane and Marc decided to branch out to bring their brand of good food to a wider audience, and opened the Green Owl Canteen, their second eatery, in Debden this month. On the site of the old Debden post office in The Broadway, the Canteen is twice the size of the Café with over 80 covers, and has a very contemporary vibe. You’re welcome seven days a week to have your breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea, and it’s a great place to meet up with family and friends. If you want to celebrate, there’s a cocktail menu to help you and, if you’re on a health kick, there’s a wide range of Healthy Shakes to choose from. Whatever your palate or your age, this interesting menu will not disappoint. You can also pre-order your take-away lunch or organise your party or event using the Canteen’s catering service. At its heart, the Canteen is all about the food. Everything, from the

amazing range of patisseries and sour dough pizzas to the handmade patties and the baked beans (yes, I did say ‘baked beans’), are made from scratch in their state-of-the-art kitchen. If you took a peek though the Canteen’s window in March, you may have seen Alessandro and his team working with Savino from Milan, who was teaching them his family’s sour dough recipe. You can rest assured that you have probably never tasted pizzas as good as these before… unless you’ve been to Milan. But this article wouldn’t be complete it I didn’t mention the prices; they combine the quality, care and attention to detail that goes into every item on the menu, with respect for their customers’ pockets because Jane and Marc want their Canteen to become yours. 12-14 The Broadway, Loughton, Essex IG10 3ST. 020 8508 8811 eat@greenowlcanteen.Co.Uk greenowlcanteen.co.uk

COLE’S A LOCAL BUSINESS STANDING THE TEST OF TIME Back in 1928 William E Cole founded a business that would outlive nearly all others in Epping. Originally known as “Cole’s Tailors”, Mr Cole would be the Master cutter who made bespoke suits and jackets for the local community and Air force uniforms during WW2. In the early 40’s Cole’s moved into its flagship building, a 200 year old listed building, hardly changed from its original glory.

closely with core British brands such as LOAKE, Barkers, BARBOUR, as well as beautiful European products like GANT, MEYER and many others.

As times moved on so did Cole’s, now with a team of 20 in the workshop, in the mid 60’s the bespoke suit business was at its prime and with the introduction of the second generation, David Cole also a bespoke cutter, it helped the business turn out over 12 suits a week, fully hand made in house. During this productive time Cole’s expanded to include other premises to the business.

Alongside the ever changing retail shop is the Hire Wear, which will fit all shapes and sizes for some of the biggest events in the country from Ascot’s top hat and tails to specialised evening tails to meet the Queen. Or perhaps more important, your wedding day, Cole’s will show you around their selection of modern mohair 3 piece suits to the more traditional dinner and tail suits, the choice is yours, as long as you and your men look perfect on the day.

By the late 80’s Cole’s had to evolve to survive, moving away from hand made products, and in the direction of a high-end outfitters. Cole’s soon encompassed the country and city gentleman’s every need. Customers soon became well accustomed to the personal customer service that the stores offered, offering etiquette advice to helping a gentleman find a new summer wardrobe. In the early 21st Century Cole’s was to enter its third generation with the introduction of Freddy Cole. To date the company has become more of a lifestyle brand with a very wide range of clothes that cater for the most formal of occasions to the every day, working

Cole’s have never forgotten their roots, and still to this day offer a traditional personal service unlike any other high street store. When the time comes for a new suit, staff will assist you to find the correct colour, shape and style and then, to make sure it is the perfect fit, will utilise the in house tailor to ensure you look great whatever the occasion.

For the future the shop will continue to evolve making sure its customers are always dressing at their best, making sure the brands and products provided meet the shops high standards of quality and style. Moving forward will be the introduction of an online option for their products so that the unique stock can be shared to a much wider audience. Cole’s are always looking to the future and the introduction of new stores, products and services. Here’s to another 90 years. 313-315 High Street, Epping, CM16 4DA. Together at the table Research shows that there are many health benefits for families that regularly share meal times. Sadly however, this once traditional habit of eating together around the table appears to be falling out of favour.

According to research, whether it’s every night or just a few times a week, eating together at the table is an excellent way to bring families together and promote healthier eating habits in a supportive and sociable setting.

Here are our 6 reasons to eat together at the table: • Controls portions - Turning off distractions like the TV, phones and tablets while eating at the table could help you to focus on what, how much and how quickly you eat. Mindful eating is a great way to tune in to your body’s natural fullness cues preventing you from over-eating and reducing the temptation to over-eat.

• Control what’s on offer - Ditch the ‘TV dinner’ – ready meals and takeaways are often high in fat, salt and sugar which can have a negative effect on heart health. A more structured mealtime routine around the table could give you the incentive to make that extra effort to prepare delicious healthy meals from scratch.

• Nurture happy minds - Turn off distractions and let the conversations flow around the table as you enjoy meal times together. Sharing your day, worries and aspirations with those around you creates a supportive and nurturing environment boosting social skills, intellect, self-esteem and ability to manage stress.

• Lead by example - Set a good example to children by sharing the same healthy meal together at the table, including a variety of different vegetables. Remember, it can take up to ten tries for children to accept new foods, so keep exploring new and innovative ways to increase the veggie content of family meals.

• Adopt healthier behaviours - Sharing mealtimes as a household will help to build a healthy relationship with food and could make teens less likely to fall into risky habits. Use this opportunity to embed change such as experimenting with new flavours and ways of cooking or simply enjoying the ambience of the shared experience.

• Develop skills for life - Make mealtimes a family affair and give everyone a role from the food shopping and preparation, to stirring and laying the table, setting them up with positive skills for life. Working together will instil a sense of pride and make cooking and eating as a family enjoyable rather than a chore.

For the sake of you and your family’s future health and wellbeing, make a pledge today to share more mealtimes Together at the Table– you’ve got so little to lose and so much to gain because happy minds lead to happy hearts. HOME TRENDS

SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME FOR SPRING ROSE GOLD ROMANCE Rose Gold, a trend that started in recent years is now one of the world’s most recognisable colours. It is used across a wide range of products and has filtered through to home furnishings. MY Furniture have fully embraced this gorgeous metallic colour with a range of furniture, mirrors and pendant lights, all cloaked in the soft glow of Rose Gold. Placed squarely between icy blanched white gold and warm, sophisticated yellow, rose gold is at once modern, romantic, and somehow unexpected, a candy-coated surprise in the midst of often impersonal metallics. Unlike the cold feel of chrome or yellow gold’s aspirational opulence, our new favourite colour is bubbly, cheerful, and stylish.

COASTAL CHIC Incorporating a nautical look in your home doesn’t have to be all about anchors, stripes and rope. Why not opt for a relaxed, beachcomber feel with reclaimed furniture from Wooden Furniture Store. Laidback, with a colourful aesthetic, the Coastal Chic reclaimed furniture range is filled with character as it’s been sourced from buildings, boats, railway sleepers and storage containers. Featuring furniture for the dining room, living room, home office and hallway, each piece is made of recycled wood and welded with cast iron to add an industrial vibe to its rustic design. Finished with a satin lacquer, which highlights the gorgeous colours of the reclaimed timber, the Coastal Chic range is completely individual and unique. The Coastal Chic Large Rectangular Dining Table is a beautiful statement piece for the home. This wooden dining set comes with one table and 4 matching chairs. Made from reclaimed timbers from Southern India, the wood is given a resilient satin lacquer to highlight the beautiful colours in the timber and ensure that it’s hard wearing as well as practical. Finished with contrasting metal legs, this is the perfect dining set for bringing a distressed edge to your kitchen. www.wooden-furniture-store.co.uk

The new Rose Gold and White glass Stiletto range is MY Furniture’s latest furniture collection that embraces this theme. Elegant and glamorous, the collection consists of pieces for both the living room and bedroom, including a coffee table, dressing table, console unit and chest of drawers. www.my-furniture.com

WILDLIFE WATCH

Look out for the first bumblebees to arrive on the warm days this month. These will be the queens which have successfully survived the winter and are now seeking nectar and pollen from spring flowers.

PESTS AND DISEASE

GARDENING

Box tree moth is quite a new pest to Britain. The box tree caterpillars feed within webbing and can completely destroy all of the foliage on box plants. To stop the damage remove all the caterpillars by hand.

WITH VICTORIA ROBERTSON

A SEASONAL GUIDE TO HELP YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR GARDEN. Spring has really started to take hold in the garden inviting you to spend longer outside. Even though there will still be occasional days ahead filled with April showers one thing is for sure the milder weather is now on its way.

JOBS FOR APRIL _ This month begin giving your garden a general feed. Sprinkle a general fertiliser around the base of all your plants and shrubs. Suitable fertilisers to use are Grow more, Chicken Manure and slow release pellets. Roses are greedy plants and will greatly benefit from feeding as they come into growth. _ If you have a lawn now is the time to

get out your lawnmower as the first cutting time is here. Keep the blades high to start with and lower as the spring and summer moves on. _ Start tying in new shoots on your rambling roses, clematis and jasmine. _ If you want to get ahead with your summer lily display, you will need to start planting now! Planting them in pots will give you the freedom to move them around the patio or to help fill in any gaps in your borders when they come into flower. _ Prune your Penstemons, cut all the old shoots back to the base provided there is new growth at the bottom of the plant. If there are no new shoots at the base, cut just above the lowest set of leaves.

RESTAURANT REVIEW TEMPLE INDIAN FUSION

This iconic Woodford venue is one you’ve probably seen hundreds of times, situated just outside the station with its large wooden outdoor terrace area for summer dining, and evening cocktails. Inside, the restaurant is split in to two dining areas with a central bar, the décor is very nicely designed with comfy seats, ambient lighting and the tables are not too close together so you don’t feel like you’re sat on top of other diners. We visited during the weekend of all the snow from the ‘Beast from the East’ and we expected to be the only diners there but were pleasantly surprised a lot of other people had made the trip, which filled us with confidence, if the regulars were prepared to brave such harsh conditions to make it to Temple then we were surely in for a treat. For starters we had Paneer Shashlik, which was a spicy home-made cheese cooked in the Tandoor, along with Ajwani Salmon; 2 plump portions of fresh Scottish salmon char-grilled in the tandoor with lemon juice, ginger and carom seeds. Both were delicious and very well cooked, with lots of flavour. The paneer is a personal favourite as I’ve tried it many times elsewhere and I’m pleased to say the cooking at Temple was just right for this cheese, and it had just the right texture. The salmon fell away in flakes with a light push from the fork, each piece expertly cooked in the traditional tandoor. For mains, we opted for the stunning Tandoori Mixed Grill: a plate of mouth-watering tandoori specialities which include pieces of king prawn, chicken tikka,

sheek kebab, lamb chop and tandoori chicken, served with a nan. This is great for anyone like me who can never decide exactly which dish they want, and this lets you sample a bit of everything all on one plate. Each piece was delicious, full of flavour and went perfectly with the house rose wine. My dining companion went for something a little different, the Nazakath, this had succulent pieces of the most tender lamb we’ve ever eaten, marinated in natural yoghurt, fresh ground nutmeg, black pepper and green papaya paste slow baked in the clay oven and drizzled with sugar syrup. This dish was exquisite, the papaya and sugar gave a beautifully exotic twist to the lamb and lifted the flavour of every bite. We’ve never tried this dish before but would definitely order it again. For desserts we decided to try the Ferrero Roche chocolate ice cream which has a lovely creamy texture and a nostalgic Roche on the top, and the lemon sorbet which gave a refreshing zing in the mouth after such a wholesome delicious meal. Throughout the evening we enjoyed Cobra beers and a selection of delicious house wines. I’d fully recommend the Temple restaurant, if you’ve not been before then head down, it’s very reasonably priced for the high level of food they serve, and now we can definitely see why so many other diners had made their way through the snow to get there! FEARLESS ADVENTURE

If you’re looking for a taste of Costa Rica’s highlights but want to keep things spicy with a sampling of hidden treasures, we have an action-packed 16-day trip that tops the menu.

Curiosity piqued? Here’s some of the highlights, put together with our friends at G Adventures. More than a quarter of the total land area is protected and the country’s tropical ecosystems are home to some of the most diverse flora and fauna in the world. One of the most thrilling ways to experience such a place is in the footsteps of conservationist, researcher, and animal advocate, Dr. Jane Goodall. More than a half-century ago, Dr. Goodall began her pioneering research with chimpanzees in Tanzania, and her legacy has left an enduring mark on scientists and wildlife lovers alike. The Jane Goodall Collection offers travellers the rare opportunity to visit the planet’s wildest places for closeup, larger-than-life encounters with animals - while ensuring that their natural habitats are protected. ENTERING FATHERHOOD

WITHOUT A MAP...

This month is George’s 5th birthday, so this week he took a load of party invitations to his school for his friends. Initially he wanted to invite, “everyone in the world,” I explained this would be a logistical nightmare, and his eyes seemed to glaze over when I went into details about the cost of airfares and the need to build an unimaginably large dome for over 7 billion attendees. He then scaled it down to, “everyone in my school,” again, this was a no from me, all these kids will need party bags and I’m not Willy Wonka. Eventually he settled on, “everyone in my class,” (my initial idea) and we proceeded to write out the invites. However, when we picked him up from school later that day he look absolutely distraught and we couldn’t work out why, could it be that no one wanted to come? Was everyone busy that day? Through torrential tears he tried to explain the devastating news… “Everyone got an invitation to my party… Except for me!!” Through stifled laughter we tried to console him and explained how invites work and the concept of a ‘host of the party’, and eventually he understood he’d also be there… after we decided to give him his own invitation as well. In other news, Jake’s hair continues to grow at a relentless rate, he looks like the offspring of a scarecrow and a pineapple. However, each time we take him to the barbers he immediately takes the free lolly and slides down under a table, crying as we drag him out by his legs and put him in the seat. The muscles in his stomach work overtime as he pushes his gut outwards to try

38

ESSEX CENTRAL

and escape, and we keep trying to push him back into the chair. After a few minutes of this we give up, as we’re aware it’s starting to look like child cruelty and leave the shop once more, defeated. In hindsight I should take him to a different barbers, as the local one I use is a traditional Turkish barbers, so Jake sits with his mum whilst I go up first and have the flaming cotton buds on the ears, the cut throat razor blades trimming my stubble and then my head fully wrapped in a steaming towel… it must look like torture to a 2 year old.

“He looks like the offspring of a scarecrow and a pineapple.” My cousin has said he will come down and cut Jake’s hair whilst he’s watching Blaze or Paw Patrol, the only problem I see is that Jake likes to jump like a kangaroo when watching these, so perhaps we need to think this plan through… or just superglue him to a chair. We had Mother’s Day in March and the boys picked out some dinosaur earrings for the Mrs, it was cute, she was happy, and all seemed good. The problem is that Jake loves them so much he keeps trying to rip them from her ears, and quite soon she may start to look like one of those dangly ear lobed Goths. I guess at that stage the boys can throw basketballs

through the hole so they still won’t leave her ears alone, I think next year I will give them a selection choice that contains earrings they don’t wish to steal from their mother’s ears. With George’s birthday coming up we asked him want type of cake he would like, in previous years the Mrs has done some incredible creations (last year was an octopus) and felt confident she could fulfil any recommendation George came up with, and whilst looking at her earrings he proudly yelled, “a Brontosaurus!… next to an erupting volcano!!… with pterodactyls flying overhead!!!” With each suggested addition I could see her cheery face crumble a little further, by the time he’d reached the word “overhead” her own head was in her hands (whilst Jake tried again to steal her earrings). “Erm, that could be a tad tricky George, for starters most cakes don’t fly,” we toiled with the idea of wires for the pterodactyls, and dry ice for the volcano explosions, but it was starting to feel more like a science project than a cake and so we managed to talk him round to just a volcano (dormant) and a 3D standing brontosaurus (tricky!), let’s see how it goes. We’re going to take all the kids to a farm for the actual party so I’m just hoping the old saying of, “never work with kids or animals” doesn’t come back to bite us doubly bad… wish me luck.
