Beat the brain freeze! You know that feeling. We’ve all been there! When you’re sucking away on your favourite slush flavour when suddenly a lightning bolt of severe pain shoots to the top of your head! Also known as ‘cranium cramp’, here are some theories for relief, so you can drink more. Method 1 Some say one of the first things to try is the ‘thumb method’. As soon as you feel your brain freeze coming, put your thumb to the roof of your mouth and hold it there until your brain freeze goes away.

Mike’s mutterings Being an entrepreneur of sorts, I often find myself balancing confidence and humility — a challenge that everyone must face in its own form. Whenever we start a new brand and commit to a complex research project, I need confidence in myself and others. And when feedback arrives with obstacles I must treat with respect and I must humbly correct my plan without losing faith. Identifying new opportunities is what we do best. Some go on to be well-known brands that we associate with EBG, and some other ideas sometimes end up on the scrap heap, but that’s life, right? Unless we continue to look, we will never evolve and create new opportunities. As a dear friend once said “We must evolve and adapt to create change to survive.” It was with the aforementioned paragraph that both Gayle and I recently sat down with our adult kids and asked them what the “future” is! Our daughter Remy said with extreme precision, it’s all about the following: Technology; Relationships; Consistency; Honesty; Convenience; Loyalty; Service and Social Media Considering all of the above 8 points, I asked myself how we can adapt all of these into our EBG portfolio considering that almost all points do exist. But what stood out was that we must be better at delivering these attributes. To continue to thrive as a business over the next ten years and beyond, we must look ahead to understand the trends and forces that will shape our business in the future and move swiftly to prepare for tomorrow today. That’s what our 2020 Vision is all about. It creates a long-term destination for our business and provides us with a “Roadmap” for winning together with our manufacturing and strategic partners, staff and various stakeholders. I was very fortunate to recently spend some time in Europe researching new opportunities. These opportunities, with you, our valued customers, in mind to add value to our suite of brands. One area of serious interest for me is H2O (water). Every product we offer at EBG requires water. Water is the lifeblood of our planet, and soon to be the lifeblood of EBG. So stay tuned for what’s ahead in this column.

Method 2 Drink a warm substance (can we suggest a coffee?). The drink doesn’t have to be really hot, it just needs to be room temperature or above to restore your mouth’s normal temperature. Sip the drink slowly and swish it around your mouth a bit. This will warm up your palate. Method 3 Make a mask with your hands to cover your mouth and nose. Breathe quickly into your cupped hands. The idea of this is to trap your warm breath and raise the temperature inside your mouth. Method 4 Wait it out. The brain freeze will usually pass on its own within 30-60- seconds. Sometimes the shock of it can make it seem worse than it is, however if you expect it and know that it will pass it might not be so bad. Method 5 Easy tiger! As tasty as I Luv Slush is, try to sip it slowly. Consuming icy cold slush really fast in a couple of slurps may be fun and super tasty, but it also makes you much more likely to get brain freeze. The theory here is that enjoying it this way slowly keeps the cold from overwhelming the blood vessels in your mouth with sudden temperature changes. Now that you’ve beaten the brain freeze, there is nothing left to do than enjoy another cup of your favourite I Luv Slush!

What’s your flavour, tell me what’s your flavour… One of the many benefits of having an I Luv Slush or Essential Slush machine is the huge range of flavours to choose from. Did you know that we have six syrup varieties including Fun Flavours, Fruit Slush, Kidsafe Slush, Isotonic and our Cocktail range? This means there are over 30 flavours across the range to choose from!

Our Client Care team tell us the most popular two flavours are Cola and Blue Lemonade from the ‘Fun Flavour’ range. There must be some blue tongues out there? Well, we know you have good taste! As summer approaches, our cocktail range is a big hit.

Choose from aptly named flavours such as Cosmopolitan, Pina Colada, Strawberry Daiquiri and Lemon Margarita’s! We’re dreaming of Summer already! Give your Client Care team a call today and if you mention this issue of our Essential Newsletter we’ll throw in a bag of straws!* *Terms and Conditions apply. To view visit www.ebg.com.au/terms

Our global search for innovation At Essential Brands Group (EBG) we are always looking to improve our product knowledge through research and development. We are continually on the look-out for new and exciting opportunities to expand on our already impressive suite of products, equipment and services, that you have come to know and Luv! We want to share with you some of our recent R&D journeys from our Team, including our CEO and our Executive Chairman/Co-founder, as they search the globe and our great southern land, to continually bring you quality and innovative products. A recent trip saw our CEO, Todd, head to the tropical haven of Hawaii to visit coffee plantations based on the North Shore of Oahu. When we asked Todd to comment on his visit, he shares “Even in the tropical Hawaiian climate, I was amazed to see the locals drink this wonderful elixir of life all year around, they are now even replacing pineapple

plantations with coffee plantations to feed that ever growing demand for more great coffee all year round!” Our Executive Chairman & Co-founder, Mike’s, recent journey found him in Italy for HOST 2015, the International Exhibition of the Hospitality Industry. Mike shares with us “As you’ve read in ‘Mike’s mutterings’, my passion for innovation and quality drives our future vision for EBG. My travels in search of new and futuristic opportunities will only enhance our position in the marketplace and continually offer our Customers the best there is.” Closer to home, a small contingent from our Head Office, including our Master Roaster ‘Lord Phil’, visited a coffee plantation located in Northern NSW in the name of research. The tour commenced with a cupping session run by our host in the tasting room with breathtaking views of the plantation.

Phil shares with us, “To walk amongst the coffee trees with basket in hand and pick the ripe cherries, taste the sweet mucilage which coats the coffee bean protected by the skin, was truly beneficial for me in understanding the life of the green bean.” With our team’s combined years of knowledge in coffee roasting and refining our knowledge of coffee making, the Plantation experience provided us with the understanding of the whole ‘bean to cup’ process.

Coffee through the seasons The best part about being a coffee addict is that there is a coffee for all seasons! Whether it is a scorching hot Aussie summer or a snowy winter, there’s no need to miss out on your coffee fix because the weather is not conducive to your favourite drink. Coffee comes in all shapes, sizes, types and forms. From the Espresso with milk to the coffee with chai tea, the coffee with liqueur to the iced coffee, there is a taste for everyone and a variation for every season – just the way you like it! The good news is that there is no need to go without your caffeine fix just because it is hot. Although cold coffee drinks can contain any type of ingredients you so wish, such as fruit, different types of milk or even tea, there are some officially recognised and standardised cold coffee drinks that many people

are fond of all over the world. Some of these include: Iced Latte. Espresso in cold milk and poured over ice. Iced Coffee. Typically refers to a cold espresso, milk and ice cream, with cream or without. Mocha Frappuccino. This involves adding chocolate and cream with blended ice to provide a creamy coolme-down. Frappe. This involves foam-covered iced coffee with either milk or no milk, depending upon what you like. Polazzo. This typically involves two shots of espresso and cream that is sweetened according to taste. The espresso is cooled instantly after being made. Or here’s a new one! Banoffe Espresso Smoothie: Make a smoothie with banana, dates, almond milk, and of course a double shot of coffee!

So, as you can see, these are just some of the cool, delicious and refreshing cold coffee drinks that can be consumed in summer. There’s no need to cut back on coffee in summer! Why not explore the many cold variations of your favourite beverage that are out there. Let’s face it, what could be better than drinking coffee all year round?

Q. What’s your favourite coffee blend? Roasters Choice is my favourite for Barista machines but the automatic machine at my Uni uses Atomic coffee and that blend is really nice also. Q. How long have you worked for EBG? I started off as Receptionist and was given the opportunity to then take on a role in Client Care six months later.

Q. What do you luv about working at EBG and living on the GC? I luv drinking lots of coffee every day and being able to help our customers. I really enjoy interacting with customers and being able to constantly learn new things. Living on the Gold Coast sure beats my home town, Grafton! The weather is amazing 99% of the time and there is always something to do or see. Q. What’s the best thing about EBG equipment and products? I used to be a Barista so I have an understanding of how important the quality of the machine you are using is. Our Barista machines are of a really high quality and are easy to use. Even my colleagues are able to make their own coffee with the automatic steam wand. I find that feature really amazing.
