01733 239029. Entry night is 7-8pm on Tuesday September 2 or make prior contact with any committee member. The traditional village show is an ideal place to look at the exhibits, enjoy meeting people, while having tea and cake, and trying your luck on the tombola or bottle stall, with the children playing a variety of games. It’s a great family day out so head to the village on Saturday September 6 from 2pm - 4.30pm.

There’s a chance to stretch your legs, enjoy the sun (hopefully!) and do your bit for a great cause by joining the Alzheimer’s Society’s Peterborough Memory Walk. It all takes place in the perfect setting of Ferry Meadows on Sunday September 7 which is also home to a new Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Café, launched as part of Peterborough’s pledge to become dementia-friendly. Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s flagship fundraising event with walks taking place around the UK throughout the autumn to raise money for people affected by dementia and their carers. Participants at the Peterborough Memory Walk can choose between a relaxing mile long walk or the longer, more challenging 7 mile walk. Live music, face painting for the kids and refreshments will be waiting for walkers after they cross the finish line. To register or for more info go to www.memorywalk.org.uk/ peterborough. The Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Café is held in the Ferry Meadows Visitors Centre on the third Thursday of every month from 2pm to 4pm. For more info e-mail peterborough@alzheimers.org.uk

NEW FRAGRANCE SHOP @ SPRINGFIELDS Springfields Outlet Shopping at Spalding continues to add new attractions and if you like to smell good you can now visit their new store packed with fabulous fragrances. The big Christmas Lights Switch On is a great family night so diary October 30 now! That’s followed by the Military Fireworks Spectacular on November 6 and then it’s the arrival of Santa on November 13.

David told ESP – “I got the call about Siblings and as it's from the same company that made the Inbetweeners I knew it was going to be funny. I jumped at the chance to go read for it and I was delighted when they offered me the part. I was working in Sheffield and had to leave the next morning to go to the table read. It all happened so fast but it was such a good team to work with. We laughed so much making it.” David’s been working on some projects of his own including a movie called iWitness, based on Rear Window “It's a thriller,” he explains.“It's my first feature length film as a producer so it was a lot of responsibility as I was also playing the lead. The director had written it for me and I helped secure the finance and then cast the film. Casting was fun as I got to make the calls to say ‘you've got the part’ to other people.” There’s another big project coming up too but we’re sworn to secrecy for the time being! However if you’re interested in film making David’s keen to help. “I would love to chat to anyone looking at working in film or TV locally. Find me on twitter @prouddavid and I will help any way I can. Peterborough has some serious talent and I’d love to connect more with film makers in the city.”

STRICTLY’S VINCENT TANGOS INTO CITY’S ITALIAN FESTIVAL Strictly’s Vincent Simone will be the special guest star at this year’s Italian Festival in Peterborough. Famous for his Argentine tango performances with Flavia Cacace on the BBC show, the flirty Italian (who also had a stint on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here) will be strutting his stuff on Cathedral Square on the Sunday. The Festival has also been given a special seal of approval by TV celebrity chef Gennaro Contaldo who’s been named as official ambassador for the annual event.

HARVEST FESTIVAL FUN @ SACREWELL It’s Harvest Festival at Sacrewell and there’s loads of fun lined up over the weekend of September 13 and 14. You can watch ploughing demonstrations using Shire horses and vintage tractors and the chance to see these lovely gentle giants being groomed. Animal displays will also include sheep dogs rounding up ducks and a falconry demonstration.

Annette Joyce, Assistant Director for Commercial Operations at Peterborough City Council, told ESP: "Gennaro was overwhelmed by the effort and enthusiasm shown by the Italian Community Association to ensure the event’s continued success and he showed a keen interest in wanting to help take this established celebration to the next level. Gennaro’s support will mean we can put the festival on the national calendar of events where it belongs.

Rural crafts will be brought to life with wool spinning sessions and visitors can try their hand at corn dolly making. The festival will also showcase local produce with plenty of enticing craft, food and real ale stalls to browse.

"The city centre is transformed into a Little Italy that is big on personality. There will be more entertainment on show including a focus on activities for children. In true Italian style expect music, lots of dance – especially with Vincent – and plenty of food with a drop of vino to wash it all down with."

And there’s plenty to entertain younger visitors with activities including lamb national races, duck races, pond dipping and parachute games.

The Italian celebrations will take place in the city centre over the weekend of September 20 and 21.

Tractor rides around Sacrewell will feature the journey of food from field to fork with a focus on the harvesting process.

The farm’s open every day from 9.30am – 5pm. For more info visit www.sacrewell.org.uk or call 01780 782254.

New entertainment at the event will include four-piece band Irpinia’s Sounds from Avellino, traditional brass band Ottoni Animati from Sicily and London-based solo artist from Florence Francesca Biscotti. Of course there’ll be plenty of food and you’ll be spoilt for choice with pizza, pasta, confectionary, panini, coffee, wine and spirits to sample and purchase from local exhibiting Italian businesses. There’ll also be a large Italian food market and fruit and vegetables from The Green Backyard will ensure shoppers can get all the ingredients they need to create their own mouth-watering Italian dish. Fans of cars and motorcycles will be able to enjoy displays of Italy’s finest motoring marques from Ferrari to Alfa Romeo and Fiat, to Ducati’s, Vespa and Lambretta. Maseratis will also be showcased as part of a special pop-up restaurant on the Saturday evening. For more info or to take part, call Carmela Cocozza on 07771 604069.

How to look and feel great even if you like to party hard and have a hectic summer schedule. G ive up smoking before 30, maintain a healthy relationship with alcohol and you can significantly reduce your chances of getting a serious disease like cancer and ending up infertile. You’ve been out all night dancing and drinking with friends, you’ve woken up with a sore head, and you’ve just realised it’s Friday morning and you’re running late for work. Playing hard and working hard is manageable, especially when you’re young, but you need to think about the effects this lifestyle can have on your health long-term. We’re not suggesting you don’t go out and have a good time that’s what these years are good for! But there are a few simple things you can do to protect your health now and in later life.

chlamydia, gonorrhoea and herpes are becoming increasingly common in the UK. And ladies, don’t forget to organise your cervical smear too - you’re encouraged to book this once you turn 21, it’s a fact that early detection from screening saves lives each year. Those of you between 40 and 74 can book yourself a FREE NHS Health Check - all GP practices are taking part, so book an appointment at your surgery today.

Stop smoking - Giving up smoking is one of the most important lifestyle changes you can make and it’s never too late to stop, but the sooner you quit the better. Loads of people across the city are giving up. Since 2006/07, Peterborough City Council’s Smokefree team has helped almost 10,000 people quit for good and can help you too. Just think of the benefits no more smelly breath, yellow fingers or reeking of tobacco!

Drink sensibly - What you know about alcohol will be based on what you’ve heard or experienced, but how much is fact and how much is myth? Do you know how many units are in your favourite drink and do you know your recommended limit? For women it’s one 175ml glass of wine per day, for men it’s a pint and a half of beer.

You’re four times more likely to quit for good if you get dedicated expert help, so if you’re ready to give up get in touch with the council’s Smokefree team who provide services across the city. They offer lots of options to help you quit, including confidential advice, support and medication. Whether you’re thinking of contacting them for the first time or have worked with them before, they want to hear from you and will give you all the encouragement and assistance you need.

Here are some things to think about if you fancy cutting back a bit…

Eating healthily, getting active, getting checked, drinking sensibly and stopping smoking can significantly reduce the risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, kidney, liver and heart disease. Building these healthy lifestyle choices into your routine will give you more energy, help you keep your weight under control, improve your complexion, help you sleep and reduce stress. And not only will these choices help you look and feel great - they don’t have to take up a lot of time or cost loads of money!

• If you tend to have a drink at a certain time of day, break the habit by doing something different at that time.

Top tips for getting that all-important healthy balance

• Have a smaller, quality bottle of beer instead of a large, cheap can; or a branded single instead of a house double.

Eat healthily - Eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day and eat fish at least twice a week. Base your meals on starchy foods like bread, potatoes, pasta and rice. Try and cut back on salty foods and foods high in saturated fats and high in sugar. Drink plenty of fluid; about six to eight glasses of water each day and don’t skip breakfast.

• Swap your usual for a drink with less alcohol. (Check out the ‘ABV’ information on the side of the bottle or can for help with this). There are more drinks with less alcohol available these days - some of them are cheaper too and often include fewer calories.

Get active - Being active can help lift your mood and make you feel happier. If you are 18 and under you should exercise for at least an hour every day; over 18s should try to do 2.5 hours of moderately intense activity over a week (remember every 10 minutes counts!). Get checked - If you are sexually active wear protection and get checked regularly. Sexually transmitted infections including

• If you drink every day, try to have at least two days a week when you don’t drink at all. • Why not try spacing and pacing? Space your drinks out and pace yourself by drinking slowly and add a soft drink or glass of water in between.

• If you are planning on a big night out, then eat before you go out or have a large glass of milk. First World War Peterborough played its part last month commemorating the First World War and it was great to see such a wide spectrum of ages getting involved.

F

rom descendants of those who lost their lives in the war through to young cadets, local poets to vintage car enthusiasts, war veterans to city councillors, and local people who just wanted to be there to mark the day 100 years ago when Britain entered the First World War, August 4 was a special day. Here in Peterborough we lost more than 1,000 service personnel during the First World War and veterans worked with Peterborough City Council to plan the commemoration. During the day there was a civic service at the war memorial on Bridge Street and a car show displaying vehicles from the early 1900s. In the evening lively music from the era was played by Sara Spade and the Noisy Boys under the Guildhall, an old fashioned bus served fish and chips, and there was a 1914 style meal in a marquee along with emotive poetry readings by the city’s past and present poet laureates. At 11pm, the exact moment Britain entered the war, a rocket maroon was launched and it was a touching scene as people gathered in Cathedral Square holding candles.

The commemoration events have inspired many people to find out more about WW1 and its effects on the city and there’s still time to discover more at several related events listed here.

MORE NOOKIE TO BEAT CANCER

Pep Cipriano

BACK IN THE DAY...

pressure towards the end of its reign but I have fond memories of Quo Vadis in the late 1990s when the crew in there was the best in town. Manager Claire was a bit of an extrovert. She struck me as someone with a split personality where one day she’d rule with an iron fist and the next she’d happily hand over the reins to the chief glass collector if she could. But her unorthodox management style worked and Claire assembled an excellent team of the best DJs at the time, loyal front of house personnel and fun bar staff.

...QUO VADIS When I was 15 it was all about trying to look and act like Don Johnson’s Miami Vice character ‘Crockett’ to pull the birds at school discos. Despite having the three-buttoned T-shirt, linen trousers, white slip-on shoes and matching jacket my success rate was equivalent to a D minus in academic terms. So it was time to fish in bigger lakes and this meant my first official outing to a nightclub. It was called Shanghai Sam’s and Mondays was when the venue would put on our very own nonalcoholic clubbing night. Manager, Claire The mission was simple. Down as much Thunderbird or MD 20/20 as possible, keep a sober face when parting with your hard-earned paperround money to enter and snog as many birds as you could, so the next morning all the girls at school thought you were a stud. The reality was, you’d puke up in the toilets within an hour of getting in, your parents were called to pick you up and you’d be in bed by nine. Those hazy Monday nights were my only memories of Shanghai Sam’s but it wasn’t until the venue – after years of being vacant – re-opened as Quo

Vadis that I became part of the club’s (sticky) furniture. I was always a Rinaldo’s boy and loved it in there but there was a certain air of prim and properness about Rinaldo’s in the early days that made me feel I couldn’t really let my hair down. At the time 5th Avenue was an alternative but it was a bit too foam party and glow sticks for me. The right balance was at Quo Vadis. This was a club that knew how to throw a party without laying on a load of cheesiness. It buckled under

CIAOS OUT > 14

www.espmag.co.uk

It was occasions that the club did brilliantly well. I remember its first Malibu Mission night, which my friend Stewart and I filmed as part of marketing collateral Claire wanted to show her sponsors. The venue was heaving that night and I’m hard pressed to think of a night when it wasn’t busy. The brilliant Brown Sugar events were arguably the best there’s ever been during this time and the midweek disco themed nights were also very popular. People flock to clubs if the vibe is right and the music is even better and there’s no doubt Quo’s DJs had a huge part to play in its success. Two of its finest – Eddie Nash and Steve Andrews – are still spinning tunes from their Zimmer frames today. Bless them, that’s how good they continue to be. Quo wasn’t a big venue but it wasn’t pokey either. What I liked best was its entrance. I’ve always been a fan of being led into the main area via stairs, as it gives you a sense of journey and arrival instead of just walking into a big open space like some clubs have you do. Even though the name Quo Vadis was hardly an inviting one for a club in comparison to the exotic sounding Shanghai Sam’s, it was every bit as successful and carried the baton into the new millennium when in 2003 it became Faith. Now that’s another story for another time…

MEET ROBERTO DURAN One of my favourite middleweight boxers off all time will be appearing at The Solstice on Thursday September 11. There are still a handful of places left to see Roberto Duran and hear him talk about a glittering boxing career that saw him fight other greats including Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns. For tickets call Kevin Sanders on: 07872 601467.

RUNNING IS IN DAVE’S BLOOD Perhaps this headline is slightly misleading. Dave from Man About Town sponsors Balderston is hardly Mo Farah but he’s fairly proficient over 13 miles, which is why he’s signed up for the Perkins Great Eastern Run (October 12) for the second year in succession. The team at the Hampton-based BMW dealership will be cheering Dave on as he attempts to get round the half marathon route in under two hours. What will help get him round is the promise he’s made of raising at least £300 for Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes Service (LEBBS). LEBBS has been transporting essential medical items between hospitals and healthcare institutions since the 1960s. MY WORD OF THE MONTH

The service is planning to expand and currently there are 13 groups covering 32 counties in the UK, reaching more than 65% of the country’s population. The Lincolnshire arm of LEBBS was formed in January 2012. ‘Blood Bikes’ operate from 7pm until 7am during weekends and Bank Holidays. They carry any medical items that will fit either in the bike’s panniers or on their racks. Dave’s a top man for running for such a good cause. As for the rest of the Balderston crew, there’s no excuse not to enter. Closing date is October 6 and there are even free training sessions laid on to help you reach your goal. What are you all waiting for?!

AUTUMN

Yes I’m afraid it’s on its way and it’s our first line of defence against winter. But we like autumn don’t we? Wind, leaves in your face, Singing Detective skin, chapped lips, dark at 4pm, sore throat, rotten toffee apples, heating on, slippers for flipflops, soup instead of salad, cyclists with no lights and Christmas cards for sale in October.

PEP’S LOCAL HEROES:

PLANS FOR 5TH AVENUE ARE A GEM My boyish good looks in this photo will give you an idea as to how long 5th Avenue has been closed for. This snap was taken shortly after the nightclub had called it a night and I was mourning its unfortunate passing. So you can imagine how pleased I am to hear the building has finally been purchased and plans, which I’ve had a sneak preview of, to bring it back to life are well underway. From what I’ve seen the new owners will be aiming to keep the building’s exterior look and create a restaurant with plenty of alfresco seating that’ll put the icing on the cake to an area that’s beginning to attract its fair share of footfall. The City Market is improving all the time and Laxton Square is becoming a mini hive of activity at lunchtimes. There’ll be at least four more new restaurants opening in the city centre in the coming months and this is all great news for the local economy. Long may this enterprising streak continue.

TARANTELLA WITH VINCENT ANYONE? Bring your dancing shoes to the city’s annual Italian Festival this September 20 and 21 when professional dancer and former Strictly Come Dancing star Vincent Simone takes centre stage. This year’s festival has already been given a special seal of approval by TV celebrity chef Gennaro Contaldo, who’s been named as the event’s official ambassador and Vincent’s appearance is the icing sugar on the panettone. The Latin and ballroom dancer who also had a stint on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here will be strutting his stuff on Cathedral Square on the Sunday and offering a spot of tutorage to those of us with two left feet. Organisers the Italian Community Association and Peterborough City Council have previously attracted culinary stars to the festival starting with Antonio Carluccio who was followed by Gino D’Acampo and last year Gennaro Contaldo – and the latter’s ambassadorial role will help grow the event into the country’s biggest and best. As always I’m looking forward to sampling all the pizza, pasta, confectionary, panini, wine and limoncello that’ll be on the go and of course showing Vincent some of my cha cha cha moves. New this year is a four-piece band from Avellino, a traditional brass band from Sicily and solo performances from London-based singer from Florence Francesca Biscotti.

And of course fans of cars and motorcycles can see displays of Italy’s finest motoring marques from Ferraris to Alfa Romeo and Fiat, to Ducatis, Vespa and Lambretta. Maseratis will also be showcased as part of a special popup restaurant on the Saturday evening. For more info about the Peterborough Italian Festival or to take part, telephone Carmela Cocozza on 07771 604069.

BBQ AND NO ORDINARY JOE AT FLEET It’s your last chance to grab tickets to see brilliant Australian-Italian comedian Joe Avati who’s performing at The Fleet on Thursday September 18. If you’re married to an Italian or have Italian friends and know a thing or two about our traditions and culture then I promise this show is worth a shout and features all new material.

Apart from a load of pretty Italian girls and trendy (Lenny aside) Italian lads there’ll be a DJ spinning some tunes too.

And earlier in the month (Saturday 6) Facebook group the Peterborough Italian Community (previously Italian Horn Brigade) is hosting an all you can eat BBQ for just a fiver!

Sadly I’ll be in Italy eating everything in sight and whizzing around the Tuscan landscape on a clapped out Vespa, so please have some braciole on me.

The entry fee will go to installing a load of TV sports channels and a table football game like the one Muswells used to have (if any of you remember back that far).

CAR SHARE FOR PARTY IN THE PARK Most of my selfies are of me demolishing a plate of food but on this occasion I thought I’d break the mould and take part in Travelchoice’s #CarShareSelfie competition. Car sharing means you’re doing your bit for the environment and posting this snap of a dinosaur (yeah it’s who I hang out with) sharing my ride put me in with a chance of winning a sat nav. We’ll be sharing wheels again to get to Travelchoice’s Party in the Park at Ferry Meadows on Saturday August 30. This year’s party is from 11am until 7pm and expect to see local bands playing on a pedalpowered music stage, me scoffing a BBQ and plenty of rides, stalls and sideshows to keep the family entertained.

DAVID FARRELL

I’ve added former Posh player David Farrell to my illustrious list of heroes because it’s the last thing he’d expect and because he’ll probably get some stick at London Road for being honoured with such a worthy accolade. Posh fans will know what an excellent player he was for the club and most would put David Farrell into their top ten Posh players from the modern era. I was the club’s head of communications from 1998 until 2002 and it goes without saying I too was a fan of David on the pitch. But putting aside all those pacey runs and the hat-trick against Barnet, David was one of my favourite players during this era because he was simply just a pleasure to work with. I probably came across 50 or 60 Posh players during this period and in the main they were all a great bunch of lads. But few fully understood and embraced the responsibilities of being a professional footballer on and off the field like David did. Those who were like David would ordinarily be worth a mention on this page but this is about David Farrell, the only former player I’m in touch with and the man who returned to London Road to become the club’s community manager for health and education. Loyalty is a rare trait in modern day footballers and it’s something I’ve always admired in ‘Faz’. It’s comforting to see a former player return to a club that was the main stay of his career and continue to give. David was always seen to be doing the right thing off the pitch as well as (most of the time) on it and he’s still contributing to the club’s future and the local community that supported him as fans over the years. Faz is a gentleman too. Banter, practical jokes and ego were all part and parcel of a footballer’s life when I was working at the club and chances are nothing’s changed with the make-up of today’s professional footballer. David was consistently one of the fans’ favourites even when players like Leon McKenzie, Andy Clarke, Simon Davies and Jimmy Bullard

were making the headlines and I could always rely on him to give his time generously when some of the club’s ‘stars’ were sometimes nowhere to be seen. I’d often have players make excuses for not being able to go on public appearances but David would always be happy to attend and fulfil this other side of a professional footballer’s life. He was also a dream to work with on camera when being filmed for The Posh World while others would make themselves scarce. Faz understood how a football club worked and the importance of marketing and PR. He also valued the contributions made by businesses and was a player I could trust to leave with sponsors. David’s kit sponsor Adrian Rands was always telling me what a pleasure it was to be associated with such a professional. Faz took his kit sponsorship seriously and always went the extra mile. There was a shy side to Faz but you’d never have known it. Even today I see him mingling with runners at free training sessions for the Perkins Great Eastern Run, which he’s entered for the second time. It’s nice to see a former sportsman who used to be idolised by fans and sign autographs by the dozen now mixing it with the rest of us by taking part in one of the city’s biggest community events. This is because David’s always been grounded and if he had a typical footballer’s ego I certainly never saw it. Anything I needed from a signed photo for a fan to an interview just before he was about to have his lunch, nothing was any trouble and never did he make me feel inferior or patronised. David was a true professional and still is a salt of the earth kind of guy to know. He may be Brummie by birth but Faz will always be Flettonese to me. www.espmag.co.uk

place for everyone. Their philosophy is to serve really good food, to make sure every customer has a good time, and go that bit further to make sure Bill’s is always somewhere people want to come back to. So fingers crossed we’ll see another great addition to the city centre dining out scene which is developing well.

Although the company wouldn’t formally comment at this stage the City Council has confirmed a licence has been granted for the Lakeland shop unit. Bill’s started out in Lewes and now has dozens of outlets across the country serving food from breakfast to evening, with the nearest to us being Cambridge.

Meanwhile The Argo Lounge which is part of the Loungers chain which runs the Cosy Club in Stamford promises a similar vibe but even more relaxed and informal. Work is set to start on that soon in the former Natwest building and adjoining Barista coffee shop in St. Peters Arcade. The planned opening date is December 17 so all being well there’ll be a new venue open in time for your Christmas get togethers! We can’t wait.

FUN

INTO YOUR GREAT EASTERN RUN!

Wonder Woman... no it’s Mikey Clarke

When I first started writing about this year’s Perkins Great Eastern Run for ESP Magazine, the event seemed so far away. Time flies – it’s now next month! To be precise, the date for the run is Sunday October 12. Therefore, I hate to say it but if you haven’t started training for the Perkins Great Eastern Run yet, the Half Marathon may not be for you. However, the Anna’s Hope Fun Run could still be an option. With this particular run being 5K, it’s not too late to get those running shoes on to train for it.

The official Fun Run charity Anna’s Hope

And why not have a little fun with it? It’s not called a Fun Run for nothing. People tend to be a little sillier with this distance. Many do the run in fancy dress – myself included, after a bet I lost a few years back resulted in me running as Wonder Woman! You may also want to have your kids take part. To add a little competition to the run, your children might be interested in the Junior Challenge. Young runners can raise money for whichever charity they choose, but can win additional prizes if they raise funds for local charity, Anna's Hope. The school, club or group that raises the most money for Anna's

Hope in the Junior Challenge will be given a free sports team kit (or equivalent) worth £500 by Chroma Sport & Trophies. They will also win the Anna's Hope Junior Challenge Cup. Whether you’re doing the Half Marathon or Fun Run, don’t forget to sign up before it’s too late. From Friday September 26, an extra £2 is added to the registration fee. Don’t miss the deadline to get a discount and most importantly, don’t miss the overall closing date – Monday October 6.

Dinomite & Pudsey For more details on everything I’ve mentioned and much more, visit www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk I look forward to seeing you at the run next month. Look out for myself on route and the ESP photographers amongst the crowds. Mikey Clarke

ESP’s style guru Sue Donnelly has our guide to looking great in denim whatever your shape and size… The right Jeans can be obstinate and tricky to locate. Colour, fabric, stretch-a-bility, style, leg length, waist size, pocket placement and embellishment/detail all form part of an equation that equals the ‘perfect pair’. Where jeans are concerned, one size does not fit all. Your body shape, and the illusion you wish to create are the starting points to find jeans that you love – and that love you back.

Girls Curvy: Wider hips and thighs and a small waist can be hard to fit. You need jeans that hug the curves but cinch into the waist. If you’re tall, choose wider leg styles to balance out your lower half. If you’re shorter, a baby bootcut will work well. A straight leg jean suits most people but check out higher waistbands so there’s no gaping round the waist. A higher rise also lengthen legs. A dark denim with good

recovery stretch will be the most flattering. If you have a tummy, choose a heavier weight denim to hold you in. Too much stretch will not support you. Avoid too much embellishment on the back pockets if you don’t want to draw attention to your bottom. Apple: Bodies with weight around the mid section with higher, flatter bottom need to show off their slim legs. Choose straight leg styles with high pocket detail. A low-mid rise is often the best option as high waisted jeans can cut you in two. Choose less elasticity to keep your tummy held in. Boyish: Generally, straighter slimmer figures can wear most styles. Use zips, pockets, shading and washes to give the illusion of shape. Baggier, boyfriend styles will add shape to thighs and pocket details will balance out flatter bottoms. A mid to low rise usually gives the best fit. No need for stretch. Petite: Smaller bodies always need balance so they don’t look overwhelmed by what they are wearing. Never choose jeans with wide legs, flares or lots of fabric. A baby boot cut, straight jean or cropped are your best options. Ruching up the bottom of an extra long straight jean is OK too. You can choose any colour but darker denim is more slimming. Long legs: Mid to low rise with low back pockets, light colours, shading or washing will give shape and shorten. Cropped jeans can look like they are just too short so choose ones that end around 3 inches above the ankle.

Short legs: Mid to high rise, higher placement of back pockets, darker colours in straight or boot cut will lengthen. Skinny jeans tucked into boots the same colour will also work well. Cropped jeans with low fronted shoes, such as flip flops, or high heels will be your summer option.

Guys Slimmer build guys can wear most styles. Much will depend on your own preference. A standard straight jean suits most body types but a slim tapered leg will look great on a leaner frame. Like boots? Then choose a boot cut to accommodate chunky footwear. Bulkier frames and those with wide shoulders need to be balanced. Slim leg styles will be hard to fit so look for loose tapered, boot cut and a looser straight style. Styles that taper at the ankle suit men with longer legs and narrower shoulders. The lower the back pocket, the shorter the leg appears. The darker the denim, the more ‘dressy’ the jean will look. The cleaner the seam work, the smoother it'll feel against your skin. Avoid too much stretch in the fabric because the jeans will become too large, too quickly. One last tip: Jeans were never meant to be ‘washed’!

It’s all in the genes! Sharon McAllister catches up with Louis Smith as he shows he’s hot in the gym and in his jeans... Local hero Louis Smith MBE is back clutching more medals from the Commonwealth Games, sitting pretty as a judge on the BBC’s Saturday night TV show Tumble and featuring on many a magazine cover, including ours! As if that’s not enough our local Olympian and kind hearted gymnastics star has thrown his support behind the Jeans for Genes charity campaign this month. “I’m really pleased to be part of a national fundraising appeal that’s helping transform the lives of children with genetic disorders for the better,” says Louis. “It’s really simple for people to show their support, they just need to wear a pair of jeans for the day and pay a small donation – it couldn’t be easier! I’ll be wearing my jeans on the 19th September, make sure you do too!” There seems to be no stopping our boy and as ESP always likes to celebrate local people living their dreams we’ve chosen to make him our cover star once again. The last time was in August 2012 at the height of Olympics fever and following his fantastic comeback at the Commonwealth Games we felt we should do it again. For some in the sport it seemed Louis may have forgotten his discipline and that he’d gone over to the ‘dark side’ of celebrity, winning Strictly Come Dancing and making countless TV and public appearances. He took a break from the gym he’d virtually lived in since he was four years old and let his carefully styled hair down. But after his breather Louis wanted to get back to the pommel horse, proved his worth in sweat and determination, made the team and came back with the medals to prove he’s still got it. “The Commonwealth Games for me was a good opportunity for me to show everyone that I was serious about coming back into the sport,” says Louis, “and it was an amazing competition as well and I really wanted to be a part of it. The atmosphere’s crazy everyone really gets behind you.”

But it wasn’t easy; there was hard graft both in terms of winning over those who chose the team and in the gym. “Obviously I trod on a few toes just to get recognised,” admits Louis, “but once I said what I had to say and once people started taking me seriously I made the team.” His pommel horse routine gave Louis a bronze medal of which he says – “I was very pleased. It could’ve gone better but it could’ve gone a lot, lot worse but ultimately I’d only been training seven months. It was a massive pat on the back.” It seems these days that every time I turn on the TV Louis is making another appearance and it’s been great to see him achieve so much. Surely he takes TV in his stride now? “I don’t take any of it for granted, all the things I do and all the people I meet – I’m absolutely loving it. I think a lot of people that are cynical about it are probably jealous. But I think the bigger picture is that I’m not just going on Celebrity Juice, when I’m on it I’m an ambassador. I’m always representing British gymnastics. People always remember me for gymnastics, so the more shows I can go on and the more publicity I can get I think gymnastics is also getting it as well.” His prime show at the moment is as a judge on Tumble on BBC One on Saturdays of which he says – “I’ve got an easy job, I just have to sit there and judge it and enjoy it whereas the celebrities, they’re the ones being put through their paces, they’ve got serious hard work to do. “A lot of the shows out there everyone can practically do – everyone can kind of sing, everyone can kind of dance but not many people can do back flips!” Having been on the other side of the floor when he competed in, and won Strictly Come Dancing, I wonder which judge he’s modelled himself on?

“I love to see my friends, people I grew up with and coming back to Peterborough.”

24

www.espmag.co.uk

After all the pressure of the Olympics and having chilled out why was he so keen to climb that mountain back to peak fitness once again?

“I’d say probably Len or Darcey just because I’m honest. I can have a laugh but I think first and foremost people want me to be credible. I am still a competing athlete.”

“Just because I missed it. I missed training every day and being at the top of my game. I wanted to compete with the best in the world again and prove that I deserved to be there. I’m an athlete, I’ll always be an athlete I’m naturally competitive and fell back into my old ways.”

At the end of the first episode of Tumble it was fantastic to see Louis and his gymnastics teammates perform a jawdropping routine that gave the lads the chance to really show what they can do outside of a sporting arena. Look it up on iPlayer if you missed it!

“We did a few rehearsals back in my gym club and I don’t think they realised how much fun it would be,” says Louis. “When they came to the studio they couldn’t believe it. The lights and the set and everything was handed to them on a plate. The look on little Niall’s face! I said to the boys – ‘Fun isn’t it? This is what I live for. This is what I enjoy’. And they were like, ‘it’s brilliant’ – they absolutely loved it!” Our boy has also become a bit of a sex symbol and another calendar is set to adorn many walls in 2015 (Calendar Club £8.99) featuring Louis looking pretty hot, but how does he feel about being portrayed in this way?

Photos: www.calendar-club.co.uk

“I don’t mind at all,” he says with a smile. “Anything that I do and all the things that come my way – it’s fun. I’m a gymnast that’s managed to get where I am and it’s not going to last forever. In ten years time I’m probably going to have children and be settled down and people are barely going to remember who I am so I’m just making the most of everything.” And who keeps him down to earth amid being idolised? “I’m always down to earth. I meet so many famous people and I’ve made famous friends but that lifestyle comes out of mingling and that’s not really for me. I love to see my friends, people I grew up with and coming back to Peterborough. It’s kind of like a turn off from all the stuff that’s going on and all the people I meet, the glitz and glam and celebrities. I love to balance it out by having normal things around me.” That’s why he says he built his house in Helpston, so he can hop on a train home from London, relax on his sofa and “just be normal”. He’s now working on plans for a new gymnastics, arena based competition that he says is – “Going to be very fun and urban, more of a show based competition.”

Then it’s back to training hard and looking forward to 2015 and then… maybe Rio. I remind Louis he was the first guy to feature on our front cover for over a decade back in 2012 and we’re delighted to recognise his success once again. “Yes, I remember, it was awesome. I love Peterborough so it’s an honour.”

JOIN LOUIS AND SUPPORT JEANS FOR GENES DAY THIS MONTH! Jeans for Genes raises money for Genetic Disorders UK and aims to change the world for children with genetic disorders. Individually, genetic disorders are rare but together they affect 1 in 25 children born in the UK – that's more than 30,000 babies each year. Their associated health problems mean that genetic disorders are the biggest cause of death of children aged 14 years and under. Jeans for Genes Day provides funding for the care and support of children with genetic disorders through a grant programme. Each year they offer funding to a range of charities. It’s easy to help raise money just by wearing your jeans on September 19 – check out the website www.jeansforgenesday.org and order your free fundraising pack.

BACK TO THE FUTURE @ FLAG FEN

ESP’s Mikey Clarke visits Flag Fen for a diy project with a diffence… Stuart was keen to emphasise that Flag Fen is continually developing and offers many activities for all ages and interests. In the last few weeks a ‘dig tent’ has been opened to educate budding archaeologists. The mock dig site allows the young to experience dig techniques and to uncover their own finds!

lag Fen is internationally recognised as one of the most important Bronze Age sites in the world. I once interviewed TV’s Time Team presenter Tony Robinson who spoke passionately of the local landmark. “I love the place, I’ve been there many times,” he said. “It’s an amazing archaeological site. With the museum and Flag Fen, I’m convinced Peterborough is well on its way to becoming one of the most provincial centres for history and archaeology in the country.”

F

If Flag Fen is good enough for the Blackadder legend, it’s good enough for me! I recently visited the site to witness a unique challenge taking place. A group of re-enactors were challenged to re-roof a roundhouse in a week (Monday August 11 to Sunday August 17). This once-in-a-lifetime event brought to life the techniques and tools used 3,500 years ago. The Bronze Age roundhouse at Flag Fen was originally built 20 years ago using modern tools to replicate the style of a roundhouse. The Black Knight Historical re-enactment group had the difficult challenge of re-roofing the roundhouse with only basic Bronze Age style tools. This experimental archaeology project is believed to the first of its kind for this era that has taken place in the country. I grabbed a few words with the Events and Programme Manager for Vivacity Culture and Leisure, Stuart Orme. He told me – “Flag Fen is a great place to visit to see what things were like back in the Bronze Stuart Orme Age. We thought it would be great to give people the opportunity to see how things were built back then too. There

28

www.espmag.co.uk

wouldn’t have been any roundhouses on this site back in the day, as what is now Flag Fen would have been underwater – but the roundhouse we’re building is actually based on one that was found about a mile away at what is now Fengate.”

The main visitor centre also has a new display telling the story of the Bronze Age and one of the most exciting new permanent visitor attractions is the restoration and conservation of the ‘Must Farm Boats’, some of the oldest boats found anywhere in the world. The eight log boats were found just two miles east of Flag Fen in a wetland site near Whittlesey. Found in a good state of preservation, with some being virtually intact, these boats are now at Flag Fen and being preserved and restored in a similar way to the Mary

This project would have obviously been much easier and quicker using modern tools. I asked Stuart why they’d made things more difficult on themselves. “This gives us a much clearer window into the past,” he said. “We have discovered roundhouses, and many tools – but nobody knows exactly how the two are connected. By building with those tools, we get a greater idea of how they may have been used. And it’s great for the customers. We’re literally bringing the past to life and giving people a more memorable experience, as Vivacity often does at its sites – here, Longthorpe Tower and the Peterborough Museum.” On the topic of interesting things discovered at the site, Stuart explained –“England’s oldest wheel was found here, we’ve discovered Bronze Age swords, and no other causeway compares to the scale and complexity of the one found here.” Stuart and I spoke about Tony Robinson’s passion for the site. He revealed, “Tony and the Time Team crew have been here quite a few times. In fact, there’s an episode that should be airing at some point during the next couple of months that features Flag Fen.”

Rose. The restoration programme can be viewed as part of one of the Flag Fen guided tours and as the site closes for the season at the end of September I’d recommend you visit soon, it’s a really worthwhile day out. Movie Previews

THE EQUALIZER Cast: Denzel Washington, Chloe Grace Moretz, Marton Csokas Director: Antoine Fuqua

Released

SEP

26 Film executives have reportedly been so impressed by Denzel Washington’s take on the hit TV series – they’ve already started work on a sequel. Early screenings have been favourable for the Oscar-winning actor’s latest collaboration with director Antoine Fuqua – Washington snagged a Best Actor Academy Award when they worked together on Training Day – and the winning combination could make this autumn’s must-see actionthriller. Denzel stars as a former Black Ops commando who faked his death for a quiet life in Boston – as in Massachusetts, not Lincolnshire – only to come out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl (Kick Ass’ Chloe Grace Moretz). Unfortunately he finds himself face-to-face with Russian gangsters in the process…

IF I STAY Released: August 29 The second major film to feature Chloe Grace Moretz in this edition (see above) has got a The Fault in Our Stars vibe.

All release dates are correct at the time of going to press.

She stars as Mia Hall, a girl who falls into a coma after a car accident, and during an out-of-body experience must decide whether to wake up and live a far different life than she imagined. Should she pursue her musical dreams, or follow a different path to be with the love of her life (Jamie Blackley) – as she’s caught between life and death for one revealing day. But the previous conundrum pales in comparison to making one ultimate decision – that will not only decide her future, but her fate.

THE BOXTROLLS Released: September 12 From the makers of two of the most innovative animations in the past few years – Paranorman and Coraline – comes a new adventure based on Alan Snow’s renowned children’s novel Here Be Monsters. A young boy raised by underground cavedwelling trash collectors, tries to save his friends from an evil exterminator – in this enigmatic tale that could well be the animation of the autumn. Featuring the voices of Maleficent’s Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Toni Collette and Ben Kingsley, this could well be one for both the young ’uns and adults alike – with clever comedic touches that were prevalent in the maker’s previous outings.

LET’S BE COPS Released: August 29 Despite the lack of notable stars the intriguing premise has got the box office tills ringing Stateside for this buddy cop comedy. Two struggling pals (Damon Wayans Jr and Jake Johnson) dress as police officers for a costume party – then take up the gig full time after getting taken seriously in the neighbourhood. But when they get entangled in a real-life web of mobsters and crooked detectives, the duo must put their fake badges on the line.

ULTRA STREET FIGHTER IV (PS3/360/PC) Out now The fourth iteration of the greatest fighting game of all-time has finally received the complete five-star version. With five new characters – including Final Fight and Alpha version favourites Hugo and Rolento – the roster has been expanded to a whopping 44 combatants, along with gameplay and mechanics ‘balancing’ via fan feedback.

SEX TAPE

Throw in some new modes/features and six new arenas, and this just about offers enough for fans to shell out a few more ‘queen quids’ – but you could feel like you’ve received a dragon punch if you own one of the previous versions. You’ve now made your teeth meat out of IV now Capcom, so let’s just put this version to bed and move onto Street Fighter V on next-gen consoles. Capiche?

Released: September 3 Despite a decent-looking trailer this has received mixed reviews – and purported negative reaction due to the blunt title. It sees Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel’s married couple wake up to discover that the explicit pornographic tape they made in an alcohol-fuelled clinch the night before has gone missing in their computer’s ‘cloud’ – leading to a frantic search for its whereabouts. Rob Lowe co-stars in this comedy from the director of Bad Teacher.

DIABLO III: REAPER OF SOULS – ULTIMATE EVIL ED (XONE/PS4/360/PS3) Out now With more than 13 million players having tackled Diablo III – the ultimate version has now been released for next-gen consoles (or honed for last-gen).

A MOST WANTED MAN

####

Released: September 12

Battling the eternal war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells with up to four players now comes in the ultimate edition – combining the original game and the Reaper of Souls expansion in one definitive pack. Even with the generally uninspiring graphics, battling ancient demon hordes in one of five powerful character classes is simply sensational stuff for RPG fans – and after several years of patching this is the most rewarding experience of the game yet.

The late Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman stars in one of his final films, as a terrorist-hunting German spy in this quietly under-stated thriller that has garnered impressive reviews. He tracks a half-Chechen, half-Russian, brutally tortured immigrant, who’s mysteriously turned up in Hamburg’s Islamic community laying claim to his father’s ill-gotten fortune. An impressive cast includes Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe and Robin Wright.

THE LAST OF US: REMASTERED (PS4) Out now Few games deserve all the plaudits it receives, but this remastered PS4 version of one of the greatest games of all-time does – and more.

A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES Released: September 19 Likeable Liam Neeson has undoubtedly found his niche area (and payday) when it comes to action-thrillers – after going Non-Stop, becoming Unknown, and being Taken twice (and will be for a third time soon). This time – in another similarly stereotyped movie – he stars as private investigator Matthew Scudder, who’s hired by a drug kingpin to find who kidnapped and murdered his wife. Neeson’s always good value, so don’t rule this one out.

#####

Set twenty years after a catastrophic pandemic, this gripping adventure follows the journey of Joel, Tess and curious teenager Ellie, across a much-changed America that is rife with zombie-like abominations and ruthless human survivors. With more than 200 gaming awards to its name, this refined version features full 1080p and higher-resolution character models – and basically looks even more fantastic. This masterpiece will now probably win PS4’s Game of the Year…

SACRED 3 (360/PS3/PC) Out now The franchise forgoes the RPG style that gave it a legion of hardcore followers – hoping to gain a new fanbase with its multiplayer hack ’n’ slash style. On one hand it’s an artistically enjoyable co-operative romp, on the other the repetitive and linear storyline may alienate fans of the open world structure that have been the backbone of the series.

REVIEW

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Chris Evans makes sure the Marvel superhero juggernaut continues on track into its third phase – with a smart and exhilarating second standalone outing for Captain America. After the events of New York, Steve Rogers – the super-powered, shieldwielding man that is Cap Am – is still struggling to

embrace his role in the modern world, particularly exasperated by the questionable tactics of Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and the SHIELD agency.

RISEN 3: TITAN LORDS (PS3/360) Out now Much like with Sacred 3, this third instalment in the Risen series has enjoyable elements – but is distinctly last-gen. This swash-buckling role playing game has a certain amount of charm – with decent combat mechanics, some nice sea-based encounters, and the freedom to explore – but it sorely needs to be brought kicking and screaming into the new generation.

The developers have brought it back to its roots to offer a notable slice of RPG action for fans of the genre – but it simply doesn’t rise to the required standards expected. www.espmag.co.uk

The life and times of an estate agent... Club which is managed by their lettings manager Matthew Driscoll. Woodcock Holmes are heading into their third year of sponsorship for the team. Malborne FC have been together for over four years and during that time have won the league, been quarter finalists in the League Cup and have also recently won the Yaxley Tournament. Home is where the heart is but it’s things like those heart stopping moments on the pitch when your kid’s footy team scores that make you feel life is good. It’s not just about bricks and mortar when you buy a house, it’s location, a sense of community and feeling ‘at home’. Adrian Woodcock and Neil Holmes set up their independent estate agency in 2002 with all that in mind – wanting to make sure the

place you choose to settle back on your sofa in really does become a home that’s right for you. They’ve been breaking the mould of sales obsessed, pushy estate agents for years and have built up a team keen to really help you buy or rent what’s right for you. They like a happy home too at the office on Broadway and not only want to give a bit back to their city but to support their staff too. They sponsor Malborne United Football

The team’s made up of players from the Orton and Hampton area incorporating three secondary schools and Matt says – “We’ve recently celebrated our end of season which included taking the team paintballing in Peterborough which they thoroughly enjoyed, and the management team were able to get their own back on some of the players!” Their new season starts on September 7 when they’ll be playing one of their biggest rivals, Voyager FC.

IN THE KNOW:

THE RENTAL MARKET CONTINUES TO GROW! According to the English Housing Survey, commissioned by the Department for Communities and Local Government just 67.9 per cent of English households own their home, the lowest percentage since 1991. There was a decrease in the number of owner-occupied households from a peak of 14.8 million in 2005 and 2006 to 14.6 million in 2008-09. In contrast, the number of households renting privately has surged by one million since 2001, from 2.1 million to 3.1 million in 2008-09. Private rented sector housing has accounted for nearly all household growth over the past decade, with 1.1 million additional households in the sector compared to 2000. The sector is up from 13.9% of households in 2008 to 14.2% in 2009.

SHOW YOUR CLASSICS ON THE EMBANKMENT I was like a kid in a sweet shop at last month’s Vintage Day Out at Peterborough Arena, which was organised by The Vintage Sports Car Club. There were so many beautiful vintage cars on display (check out the photobomb in this picture of me) that I found it overwhelming. These pre 1960 vehicles are very special indeed and it was great speaking to some of their owners. Hopefully there’ll be even more vintage delights at the Peterborough Classic and Vintage Vehicle Show that’s being held at the Embankment on Saturday September 13 and Sunday September 14. The event’s being organised by Peterborough City Council and more than 250 vehicles have already registered. It’s open to classic and vintage cars, motorcycles, scooters, commercial and agricultural vehicles, buses, ex-military and other forms of transport

from yesteryear to modern classics. There is no cost for vehicle admission and the show is free to enter for the public. People bringing their vehicles have the option to stay overnight with onsite camping facilities. There’s also live music, a bar area, hot food, grocery, craft and clothing stalls as well as traditional fairground rides to add to the family atmosphere. Proceeds from the sale of the show’s programme will be split between charities East Anglian Air Ambulance and Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund. To register your vehicle for the show and for more information email city.centre.services@peterborough.gov.uk or paula.thacker@peterborough.gov.uk Alternatively, telephone Paula Thacker MBE on: 07885 240494.

CLASSIC CARS AT WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL More than 100 classic cars are expected to be at this year’s popular Whittlesey Festival, which takes place on Sunday September 7 in Market Street and Broad Street. ’ n i k c u r t n o Keep says Mark!

Stibbington trucker Mark Hull is the star (or rather his truck is) of this month’s Pride & Joy feature as owner of an impressive 1996 Freightliner Century Class. This fantastic machine has been Mark’s since January 2012 when he bought it from Neil Yates Recovery in Snodland, Kent in memory of his friend John Atkins. He’s hired his beloved Freightliner out for proms and weddings and the idea has caught on with bookings already scheduled for next year.

Mark told ESP – “I’ve always been around trucks, as my dad used to own them. From as far back as I can remember I wanted to grow up into his shoes and this is why I'm such a fan of trucking. It's what makes the world go around and I feel I'm doing my part. “My truck is my pride and joy and I enjoy taking it to shows around the country. As far as I know it's the only one in the UK and that's what makes it special and I’d only ever sell it if the price was right! “I love trucking and always look forward to going out on the road, whether it’s for tipper work or a chauffeur for a wedding or a prom. The only down side sometimes is the lack of awareness from other road users that don't

understand the dangers of getting in our blind spots and don’t allow enough distance for braking. “I think it's safe to say though that trucking is in my blood and I will continue to do it for as long as possible and I hope one day my children want to be part of it too.” Keep your pride and joy vehicles coming into office@espmag.co.uk. It can be a car, motorcycle, caravan, truck, bus or anything that has wheels! And remember, you don’t have to currently own the vehicle, it could be one you used to have in your possession that you wish you still had. We’ve all been there, wishing we hadn’t sold or even scrapped our one time pride and joy…

ESP’s Charlotte Jolly has all the latest health and beauty news…

charlotte.jolly@espmag.co.uk

Girls, you may have just landed from your holidays, well so has Stila’s Miles High Lashes mascara. Give your lashes an upgrade with their revolutionary NEW jet black mascara. The gorgeous formula will give your lashes everything they’ve ever dreamed of, infused with plumping plant extracts and fuelled with emollients to maximise fullness and curl. The result is flawless lashes without smudging, clumping and flaking. So get ready for lash lift off and hold onto your seats as Stila brings something new to the beauty runway… once you’ve tried it you won’t want your lashes to wear anything else!

AUTUMN BEAUTY TRENDS I hate to say it but it’s nearly time to wave goodbye to summer as autumn is almost upon us. With fashion week having been and gone some of the top make up trends for next season have been revealed so let’s take a peek to ensure you look awesome this autumn… Severe eyebrows in the style of Cara Delevigne are here to stay as showcased by many of the designers including Jean Paul Gaultier. They help to frame faces and compliment fresh, healthy looking skin. Getting the perfect eyebrows can be a hairy business though but luckily Paul & Joe Beaute are here to help. Definition is key so I recommend their Definition Brush to help groom your brows. I always find that a powder works better than a pencil as you get a softer look. Available in two shades; light and medium, their Eyebrow Powder is ‘eye’ deal for emphasizing and filling in any gaps. Raw, natural beauty also seemed to be a strong theme with barely there make up looks being popular. It’s all about glowing, highlighted skin and clever sculpting for that perfect pared down look. Try Benefit’s High Beam highlighter for a girly glow. This pink highlighter with a silver shimmer is perfect

for any skin tone especially pale skinned girls and it looks so pretty when the light catches it. Then there’s Topshop’s The Face Collection, available from October, which has been created to give the ‘no make up’ effect. Featuring primers, foundations and concealers the products all have skin tone adapting formulas. It’s 100% all about the eyes for autumn/winter 2014 so look away now lipstick fans! From metallic eyeshadows to bold blue hues, whatever you choose just make sure all attention is on your peepers. Who’d have thought blue eye shadow would make a comeback? Not me, but Dior, Burberry and Kenzo certainly disagree as they showcased shades of sapphire, azure and cobalt. If you’re feeling brave and ready to embrace colour, now is the time. Max Factor Wild Shadow Pot in Sapphire Rage will give you a fierce shot of colour and has great staying power. Apply wet for a more intense hit of colour. Metallic make up has never been bolder. Follow this metallic trend and you’ll

definitely be fashion forward. This glittering trend is not only for eyes but lips and face too. Metallic is everywhere and once again Topshop is there to help you showcase this 1980’s inspired trend. They’ve opted for wearable metallic shades like rose gold and silver pink. Their blendable Metallic Cream blush comes in 2 shades; Pulse (rose gold) and Aorta (mauve pink) but it’s the Metallic Nail Polishes that are the molten of the collection. There are four colours to choose from but at only £6 each why not go for gold and get them all?

BACK TO UNI BUDGET BEAUTY BUYS Make your student loan go further with these great little beauty bargains. Feel refreshed after a long day’s study with Treacle Moon Cool Melon Fresca Bath and Shower Gel, just £2.99. Their Raspberry Kiss Body Butter smells good enough to eat (but don’t!) and My Coconut Island Hand Wash, £2.49 will remind you of your holidays. The stress of a new term can play havoc with your skin so take care of it with Pro Formula Hydrating Face Wash, £1.50; Hydrating Night Cream, £3 and Hydrating Cleansing Wipes, £2. The younger you start looking after your skin and getting into a good routine the better. And then there are the essentials… Tesco Sensitive Toothpaste, 65p; Pro Formula Deodorant, £1.25 and Pro Formula Satin Smooth 5 Blade Razor and Replacement Cartridge, £5. At these prices you’ll have no excuses. The above products are available in Tesco stores and online at www.tesco.com/beauty. Lush are also good for quality products but at affordable prices. If it’s your first term at Uni then this might come in handy – Lip Service lip balm, £5.75. Kiss goodbye to dry, parched lips and enjoy a full lip service thanks to a combination of beeswax, shea butter and apricot kernel oil. Rather have an extra half hour in bed before your lecture? Not a problem with their No Drought Dry Shampoo, £3.75. With oil absorbing powders this instantly refreshes hair without water. Hair is left looking matte and clean without any dustiness. Simply massage into your scalp and through your hair then brush out. Voila!

SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS Male grooming brand Bulldog Skincare for Men has added two new products to its award winning range; Original and Sensitive After Shave Balms available exclusively at Boots. Both balms, £5.49, help soothe and calm the skin after shaving. With rosehip oil to moisturise, cucumber oil to soothe, chamomile extract to calm and green tea extract as an antioxidant these brilliant balms really are the dogs. The Original After Shave Balm is scented with Bulldog’s signature blend of eight essential oils including Bergamot and Vetiver.

Whilst the sensitive balm features a light yet masculine fragrance of patchouli & cedarwood oils. Not only do these balms do the job with no fuss but they’re body friendly containing only natural ingredients. Free from parabens, artificial colours and synthetic fragrances, these products are not only good for your skin but good for the environment too. So put down the soap and water and get your face a new best friend with Bulldog.

WeLL Time for a ‘change’… Being with Karen Devine

transition or a passage through which the woman is no longer just a member of the community but now the ‘spiritual elder’, they are the wise ones that can now lead the rest of the community. However, here in the west the menopause creates such powerful and often sudden symptoms mentally, emotionally and physically it is hardly likely to be seen as any celebration, far from it and depending on factors such as past and current lifestyle, genetics /epigenetics and outlook on life, symptoms vary greatly. Whilst it’s common for many to take various prescribed hormones and for some it is a lifeline, we may be able to make changes to our diet and lifestyle that balance hormones more gradually and naturally or at least give this avenue some exploration before dismissing it.

L

ife itself is in constant change, as we enter our autumn time, change can be seen in all its splendour in the colours of the trees, the sky and the sun as we start to embrace a new time of year. Like the seasons we too are also a dynamic expression of life. Menopause is one such life change for a woman, now before you turn the page at this point thinking ‘well that’s a long way off for me’, let me say this – ‘what you do today will affect you tomorrow’. If you are knowingly eating the wrong foods, living a life that is opposing health then you may find that when change comes you have very little resilience and energy to deal with the shift. Hormones are chemical messengers that communicate to the whole of the body but they are incredibly delicate and influenced by the environment and what we put into our body. They determine our physical, psychological and emotional states. When they are out of balance (at any age) we can notice physical symptoms with our monthly cycle, fertility issues, as well as our mental thinking, creativity, it can affect our confidence and self-esteem. Menopause in many indigenous cultures is seen as a

It can be seen as the start of a lifelong healthy transition to a new way of supporting health physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually as hormones are the chemical messengers that influence all these levels. Menopause is natural but when we’re out of balance, toxic, exhausted, demineralised, acidic and not living our life according to nature’s laws, we are more likely to see the body screaming back at us with symptoms such as hot sweats, fatigue, tearfulness, mood swings, depression, lack of creativity and power and more. Prolonged levels of stress (our typical lifestyles) plays a vital role as the glands of stress also release our sex hormones (as well as others), when our reserves are low then you could also notice more hormonal symptoms. However this is a part of the jigsaw and not the whole picture. Changes and additions we need to think about are – • Reduction in stress

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

• Reduction of alcohol and grains. • Boost the friendly gut bacteria with fermented foods and/or probiotics as these guys can greatly help remove unwanted old hormones. • Foods to include – flax seeds, more brassica veg (broccoli, cauliflower etc), leafy green veg, berries, seeds, some nuts, healthy fats and proteins – basically as natural as possible all of which deliver good levels of fibre. • Exercise enough to avoid diminishing long term energy, get outdoors, more walks in nature, drink only fresh filtered water (not bottled). In my opinion and in my own experience cleansing the toxic accumulation is the no.1 way to support hormones, but please don’t be fooled and buy into 3-5 day detox methods, you cannot rid anything in that time. Imagine 30, 40, 50 years of poor food choices, stress, lack of sleep, accumulated acidity then you will understand why I would make such statements. Sure you may feel better due to elimination of grains, sugars, mucous forming foods, caffeine, alcohol etc. but cleansing the body is a lifestyle change; it’s a new road to travel on where you work with nature instead of against it, listening more closely to your own personal needs. Also, take a media detox – that includes TV, celeb mags and the like that can trigger feelings of low self esteem, as we measure ourselves against these images and feel something is wrong with us. Explore your spirituality if you are getting a calling to understand who/what you are and why you are here that may start to open you up to your greater creative self. You may not know who you are going to meet through this process but I am sure you are going to like her!

• Sleep – 8 hours, please do not think that your current 4-5 or even 6 hours is adequate for a body to repair and rejuvenate during the night, it is not.

In Health,

• Remove – sugar, caffeine, refined carbohydrates, along with the use of plastic wraps, bottles as these are foreign oestrogens that interfere with our own.

Dick toasts his new novel

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover and those popping to see their friendly local GP in Peterborough a few years ago may not have expected to see Dick Cartmel as a future author. Yet here he is clutching his first published book The Richebourg Affair after taking a real change of direction. Chatting with Dick at his book signing at the Royal Oak in Castor – one of his former patches as a GP – he’s clearly delighted with the reaction.

Local GP prescribes

a dose of

wine and crime

“It’s wonderful – but it was surreal when a pallet arrived on a lorry at my house with 15 boxes of my book in it! “I’m very excited. Having changed direction 2 years ago it was the right thing to do for me. “It's always been there, I’ve written things all my life, but I had a calling to be a doctor which was the career until my retirement. The last ten years I was beginning to think about what happened when I retired. Two days after I did so I was en route to NuitsSaint-Georges in France to try to create a story around the character of Chief Inspector Truchaud who’d come to me about 5 years previously, in a café in Nuits. That café features quite heavily.”

He describes the story as a ‘cosy crime thriller' similar to the likes of Martin Walker (who sets his books in the Dordogne) or Simon Brett who sets his in a small village on the Sussex coast. “I specifically picked those writers as their books too have a major sense of place, and the local geography is an important character in the book in its own right. “The character Truchaud was born in Burgundy but joined the police. Some 20+ years later his elder brother who still makes wine in Burgundy, dies suddenly, and Truchaud takes compassionate leave to support his family. When he’s trying to find out about the last vat of wine his brother made, he comes across a body… and it gets more complicated from there. Do you want me to spoil it for you?” Not at all as I’m only half way through it! Dick is a real wine connoisseur so it’s no surprise this is such a big theme in his book. “I wanted to read a detective story set in Burgundy about the Vignerons,” he explains, “and I couldn't find one so I wrote it. The inspiration comes from the people there I know, and the wine they make.” Dick’s already written a sequel and has started on the third book of the trilogy.

Dick’s cousin reads a chapter at the launch

40

www.espmag.co.uk

However there is also a completely different, contemporary style book currently being edited about a

dysfunctional Peterborough which he describes as “fiction but based on gritty reality, with some very nasty bits!” Although the success of the likes of JK Rowling is rare, many people think they’ve got a book up their sleeve so what’s the best advice to any other potential local authors out there? “Just write it!” says Dick. “But you do need someone to hold your hand.” Dick was helped immensely by Sarah Williams from The Book Consultancy which offers support, coaching, editing and publishing guidance. Sarah says – “If you don’t have somebody encouraging you and judging you then the result isn’t going to sell. What you need is a team to support you. You can’t do it on your own. “If you’re writing because you want to and have something to tell other people then somebody, somewhere will want to read it.” The Richebourg Affair by R.M. Cartmel is available now from Crime Scene Books RRP £7.99. Sharon McAllister

PAUL CHOWDHRY - PC'S WORLD

A few weeks ago when Robin Williams died, my brain didn't go straight to remembering him in Mrs Doubtfire, Good Will Hunting or Good Morning Vietnam. Before it got to them via Dead Poets Society, Hook, Aladdin and repeats of Mork & Mindy on C4, it went straight to the part of my brain that remembered a school half-term holiday of over 20 years ago. The sadness of his untimely death mixed with the joy of remembering a long forgotten comedy film he was in from 1986 that me and my mate Stu watched called Club Paradise. It made me laugh then, and it still does thinking about it now. Don't worry if you haven't heard of 'Club Paradise', because my junk

Host of Channel 4’s Stand Up For The Week and star of BBC1’s Live at the Apollo, Paul Chowdhry is back in 2014 with his biggest tour to date and is heading for the Key Theatre. The Lafta funniest stand-up award winner of 2013 tackles everything borderline within the human psyche. PC may be his initials, but the relentless world he lives in definitely isn’t. Paul tackles hard-hitting subjects like the fine art of attracting a woman, jokes cut from his TV appearances, homosexuality, nonexistent customer services and the now infamous 1980s. Strictly 16+ only. Box office: 01733 207239.

filled brain had completely forgotten to remind me for nearly 20 years about it! Too busy trying to keep track of all the PINs, passwords and user IDs I need to know, but how did I ever forget Robin Williams' character trying to run a run-down holiday resort in the Caribbean?! What's there not to love about that! Especially when Eugene Levy and Rick Moranis arrive intent on pulling every woman they meet (SPOILER ALERT: They don't). Anyway, Club Paradise never seems to have been shown on TV and for some reason is not readily available for £3.99 on Amazon like most of his films – but perhaps posthumously it'll get a DVD and Blu-Ray re-release and

you'll be able to judge whether it was as funny as I remember it. One thing that definitely shows his comedic brilliance is his stand up. One of his last ever recorded performances was on a TV show called Set List on Sky Atlantic in 2012 which they've been repeating (also on YouTube). It shows all his improvisational comedic skills, quicksilver wit, and the speed his mind could work at as a screen behind him flashes up topics he's never been shown before and he has to create a routine around it. Robin Williams was a true master of his art and O Captain, Our Captain we salute you.

ESP’s new columnist Neil Gilby brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United…

When you talk about football it’s hard to avoid envying the glamour involved but this month we look into one of the most important yet un-glamorous roles up for grabs at a football club, the kit man! This person ensures the players have a clean kit to play in on a Saturday afternoon, think that’s it? Think again… When you were offered the job of kit man, I am guessing it was an easy decision? “In my previous employment, I’d been there for over nine years so it was a big decision to leave, but it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.” What does the kit man role entail? “It isn’t all glamour believe me. It involves a lot of washing for a start. I think everyone would expect that to play a big part in the role!” Were you this domesticated at home prior to starting here? Dan Wood is living the dream as Peterborough United Kit Man, a Posh fan since the age of 6 and now a huge cog in the football club ensuring his team are set for the 90 minutes ahead. What’s it like being the kit man for Peterborough United Football Club? “I’ve supported the club since I was sixyears-old, so to be in and around the dressing room is really something you can’t buy. Every day is different. It is great to be so involved. It was my Dad that got me into supporting Posh and I just carried it on from there.”

44

www.espmag.co.uk

“I have to be honest, I didn’t do a lot of washing at home prior to joining, but you soon get to grips with it. It is all about being organised. I am certainly a bit more domesticated at home now though, although my wife won’t claim that (laughs). I think the role has helped me become a bit more organised in everyday life.” What are the players like, are they demanding? “My ideal scenario on a match day is that no player asks me for anything because it means I have done my job. Each player has got their own routine, things they like,

things they don’t. When I first started in the role, I made a point of doing a bit of networking, speaking to other kit men from other clubs and finding out how it works at their club. There is actually a private group on Facebook for Football League kit men.” A bit like the Masons? (laughs) “Yes a bit like the Masons, but it’s great for advice. They are all really nice guys and they have certainly helped me progress in my role.”

What is the most difficult part of being a kit man? “I think the most difficult part is the hours. We sometimes travel three or four hours a day before a game but it’s all part of the job. Our third kit is white so I think most people who wash kit will sympathise when it’s a wet, muddy pitch, this can be a challenge (laughs) – that is just one of those things. On the opening day at Rochdale, Jack Baldwin broke his nose and we actually went through four shirts, a first for me. Each player has two sets of everything. Some players will wear a different shirt in the second half. As a kit man, it is best to be prepared, so I try and pack everything.”

Do you prefer home games or away games? “I like going to the different grounds. I have been to 65 now as a supporter and a kit man. Some grounds’ dressing rooms are tiny, some are superb. MK Dons have an unbelievable dressing room.” What’s been the stand out for you so far as a kit man? “Working at Wembley was a boyhood dream. I was never going to be good enough to be a footballer and play at Wembley so to be able to tick that off is a great feeling.” How does a normal Saturday match day at London Road go? “I’d set everything up the day before, as in hanging the shirts up. I never find out the squad until the Friday so that afternoon I will have all the shirts out. I will come in at 10am on a Saturday. The other team staff turn up at 10.30am. I have a quick chat with the opposing kit man and our team turn up at 1pm. During the game, I need to be close to the dugout. If we need blood shirts, I am on hand. After the game, it’s a case of getting all the washing back in and getting it into the machines. The warm-up kit can be washed during the game. It takes around 45 minutes per cycle.”

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

If you have caught local 1950s rock and roll band Rocket ’57 in action you’ll have seen singer/guitarist Claude Domino out front, making lots of noise with electric guitars. Now, as regular visitors to Mama Liz’s in Stamford will already know, he’s showing a gentler side with a series of acoustic shows dedicated to songs by some of the finest writers from the past century or so of popular music. Claude explains the concept: “Over the series of shows, I’m playing songs by 50 of my favourite songwriters, with two songs by each writer. Each show features ten writers, so that’s 20 songs per show. It started at Mama Liz’s in July and the next show is on Sunday September 28.” So what prompted him to do it? “With Rocket ’57 we’ve built up a large playlist of Rock n Roll songs and the gigs prove very popular and we all hope they will continue to be. At the same time, I felt I wanted to challenge myself to do other genres of music whilst at the same time, making it even more variable with the use of acoustic guitar.”

open it to a wider audience having used The Royal British Legion predominantly in the past.” Past ‘Dedications’ have been honoured by an appearance by Phil Lynott's mother, Philomena Lynott making the trip from Dublin as special guest and Philomena will be in attendance once again as the show raises funds for The Roisin Dubh Trust, which was set up in memory of Philip Lynott. Last year’s show raised over £1,000 and those funds raised over the years have helped underprivileged children in Ireland and help support mothers who’ve lost their children at an early age. Also, a proportion of the funds helped towards the statue of Phil Lynott, which has now become a major tourist attraction in Dublin city centre and joins an exclusive top 10 of statues around the world in memory of rock stars including Freddie Mercury and Elvis Presley. This year’s Dedication night once again produces a very strong line up. The four bands taking the stage are, Rapture, Faster Muttley, The Rocket Dogs, (Special guests) and headline band Lizzy on The Loose who’ll play a full Thin Lizzy set. It’s nearly time for ‘Dedication 11’, the annual event which pays homage to rock legend Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy. But this year the venue is in New England at The Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club. Local band promoter Terry Narraine, who’s a massive Thin Lizzy fan himself, organises the evening and explained the reason for the change: “This year I’ve been approached by Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club on Lincoln Road to move the show to them which will bring the show to a different part of the city and

46

www.espmag.co.uk

There’ll be a raffle of Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy memorabilia with the main raffle prize being a guitar signed by Philomena. It promises to be a great night at a new venue and is already attracting a lot of interest. You can pay on the night of October 4 at Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club, but as ticket sales are going very well, you can reserve yours by phoning Terry Narraine on 07796 250071.

And he tells me you can expect a wide variety of tunes – “These acoustic shows feature a greater variety of styles. In July, for example, there were songs by people as diverse as Cole Porter, Bruce Springsteen, ABBA and Smokey Robinson. It’s also exciting because half of the songs are new to me performance wise.” Any clues on what we can expect in the September gig? “Not all decided yet, but I can tell you that it will include some material from Carole King, who I think is without question one of the greatest songwriters of all time.” At each show Claude will be joined by some friends from the local music scene, including Rocket ’57 drummer Lorretta Black. Meanwhile Rocket ’57’s gigs continue with their next appearance at The Masons Arms in Bourne on September 5. Claude Domino and friends are at Mama Liz’s in Stamford on September 28, from 4pm-6m. Visit www.rocket57.net/2by50 for more details.

On a visit recently to Thorney Golf and Leisure Centre, I noticed that they’re starting to bring some music to the club. The Clubhouse (The 19th Hole) has a large room which is capable of staging many different shows. And they have two shows which are bound to interest local soul fans. Firstly, they have local favourites Motor City Vipers appearing on October 25. This is a chance to see the band in what has undoubtedly been their best year so far, recently topped by being the Saturday headline act at The Peterborough Beer Festival. On Saturday October 4 there’s a real treat with a party night starring the Don’t Tell a Soul duo in what looks like a cabaret style show where you have a luxury buffet included in the ticket price and have your own seat to watch the show. Dancing of course will be catered for! The Don’t Tell a Soul duo feature the very popular Peter Jay who’s entertained a host of audiences in the area with his own unique style. Peter is very suited to this style of show and having seen him a number of times myself, he’s never failed to entertain. Appearing with Peter is Della who’s also earned a high reputation in the local area performing her soul act. Both will do solo sessions as well as their duo performance. The organisers have also attracted soul legend Freddie Hall. Freddie enjoys singing jazz standards, blues, Motown and soul. His style of music has been influenced by the likes of Nat King Cole, The Temptations (whom he sang with in Orlando), Ray Charles and Van Morrison. I understand that tickets for both shows are selling well, so if you want to reserve tickets for either phone The 19th Hole at Thorney on 01733 271218.

thinK FLoyD @ the Key Think Floyd are returning to the Key Theatre on Sunday September 14. I’ve seen the band a few times myself, including once in the intimate atmosphere of the Key, and they’re always very impressive. Pink Floyd were always renowned for a big performance on stage and, with their latest show, Think Floyd have managed to faithfully recreate all the atmosphere and visual magnitude of Pink Floyd live on stage. However to achieve the accolade of being commonly regarded as the UK’s finest tribute to Pink Floyd, the band need to be of an incredibly high standard to replicate the complex music of the originals and this group of talented musicians achieve that every time I see them. The Think Floyd production for 2014 features the whole range of classic Pink Floyd from early Syd Barrett, through Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here to The Division Bell. A look at the Vivacity website shows the popularity of Think Floyd and there are limited seats available for this gig. To book yours go to www.vivacity-peterborough.com or call 01733 207239.

LARRy MiLLeR LiVe And he’s achieved a lot of what he set out to do. His engaging personality brings a dimension of showmanship to his performances which show his true versatility featuring music ranging from blues to heavy rock, and is highly respected within the music industry by fellow artists.

If, like me, you marvel at skilful guitarists, I recommend you visit Stamford Corn Exchange on Friday September 19. Appearing there, as part of his UK tour is the legendary Larry Miller. Larry is influenced by some of the guitar greats – Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Gary Moore and reveals: "For me, my moment of inspiration was seeing Rory Gallagher live, I had never experienced anything like it. So loud, so gloriously on the edge of total mayhem, yet Rory was still totally in control. How could I not do this too! Like Rory I'd work under my own name, with a band. I'd do all the writing, singing, producing, playing and leading."

Larry’s released six albums, all of which have had critical acclaim. The latest being Unfinished Business which has had rave reviews. One journalist in his review stated – ‘Unfinished Business is the business’ and Classic Rock magazine wrote a glowing review of the album, giving it a top five star rating asking – ‘Why isn't he a superstar?’

Lizzy on the Loose

You’ll probably have seen local band The Tunnel belting out some great covers at various venues across the city but did you know they also appear in another guise? As a side project they formed Lizzy On The Loose playing songs from the vast back catalogue of the Thin Lizzy legacy. They formed in 2013 to play a one off show as a tribute to Phil Lynott. However, Lizzy On The Loose is now overtaking The Tunnel as the band to see! James Grace-Caswell told ESP – “Collectively we've played Lizzy songs in other bands for longer than any of us would care to admit and have played on stage with Philomena Lynott on more than one occasion.” This is a tribute to the music of Thin Lizzy and it’s played with passion and power. The band consists of the twin guitars of Bill Selcraig and Simon French with the solid rhythm of James Grace-Caswell on bass and Paul Quinlan on drums. Bill says – “This is a tribute not looking to imitate Thin Lizzy but to play the songs with passion as heard on the original versions.”

The answer to that is maybe because he won’t compromise his performances for fame.

As with Thin Lizzy it is all about the live performance for the Peterborough lads and they pull it off well, from the unmistakable opening of Jailbreak through to the rousing encore of Black Rose, Lizzy on the Loose give a full on live and dangerous performance!

When asked to name his favourite guitar great, Larry nominates Rory Gallagher, and many critics compare his style to Rory’s.

A night with Lizzy on the Loose is not to be missed for all fans of rock music in a time when it was ‘classic’ rock! You can catch them live this month on Thursday September 4 at the Solstice, Friday September 5 at The Green Man in Stamford, Friday September 26 at The Dragon in Werrington and next month on October 4 at the Dedication 11 night featured left.

The most famous name in the world in amplification is Marshall, and it is a huge mark of respect to Larry that he is sponsored by Marshall. They only sponsor guitarists who can show off their world beating equipment to its full potential. Larry Miller is at Stamford Corn Exchange on September 19. Box office: 01780 766455.

Then there’s another biggie for the band with The Highway to Hell’oween triple bill at The South Grove Centre along with Blag Sabbath and Let There B/DC on November 1. The guys are currently taking bookings for 2015, so head over to their contacts page and get in touch if you want to bring Lizzy On The Loose to a venue near you. http://lizzyontheloose.bandzoogle.com
