The Vaults of Terror‌ I would love nothing more than to have a supernatural encounter.

10

www.espmag.co.uk

I’ve taken part in the popular ghost walks around the city centre on numerous occasions. I’ve even headed into the buildings featured on the tour purely to see if I could hear things going bump in the night for myself… but nothing. At one point you’re sat in a room that genuinely used to be a morgue, whilst being told ghost stories that have been said to of happened inside the building at one point or another. Good luck finding a scarier and more atmospheric place in Peterborough to hear spooky tales!

I was chatting about my ghost hunting ways to the ESP editor recently, who asked if I’d checked out The Priestgate Vaults – which are historic cellars under Peterborough Museum, revealing 500 years of history from the building and the city. It turns out I hadn’t. “I’ve heard it’s one of the most haunted places in Peterborough,” she told me. That’s all I needed to hear. Later that afternoon I was booked in to a tour to check it out for myself.

I must confess that I didn’t actually see a ghost myself – the hunt continues. However, my tour guide did tell me that there are regular sightings of two ghosts in The Vaults. “I won’t tell you what people have seen,” she told me. “We like the fact that the sightings aren’t documented so that when people tell us what they saw, we know it’s not something they’ve read. It makes the consistencies even more scary.”

Stepping into the Vaults was pleasantly surreal. Each room is related to a different period in the building’s history. It was literally like transporting yourself into another time. In each of the rooms, the tour group and I met a different character – brought to life as an apparition from the past using modern technology.

“I’ve heard it’s one of the most haunted places in Peterborough”

The Vaults are a great place to go to get that spooky fix you’ll no doubt be seeking during the Halloween season. The half term building up to the Halloween weekend will see tours taking place twice daily. It’s perhaps worth noting that this is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the city’s incredible history, it’s not just for my fellow Ghostbusters. Book now to avoid disappointment. Simply call 01733 864663 for your tickets. Mikey Clarke

Photos: Emma Bothamley

One of the characters I ‘met’ was Abigail, the daughter of the Museum’s caretaker – who is a former documented resident of the building. During the Second World War, The Vaults were used as an air raid shelter for the Museum. As Abigail talks about the time a bomb was dropped on Priestgate – yes, that really happened – you’ll feel like you were really there. It sent shivers down my spine… as did the rest of the tour.

Nurun’s selling costume jewellery, accessories, clothing and Indian fusion homeware.

ALL SHOOK UP WITH LUKE “I wanna watch this, it looks good.” That’s what my girlfriend said when she turned the channel to Our Girl. I’m not a fan of dramas and was about to reclaim ownership of the remote when Michelle Keegan suddenly filled the screen.“OK, I like army stuff,” I said. The first episode went well for me and I encouraged her to record the series for which the response was:“Yeah, Michelle’s a good actress.” Result. But then came episode two and her real reason for wanting to record the series.“Oh look, there’s Luke!” she says, as he struts onto the screen every bit the hero after jumping from a helicopter. Unbeknown to me our city screen idol Luke Pasqualino stars in it too. Real reason for her wanting to watch it affirmed. Now here’s the thing. As much as

Michelle is very watchable and more convincing with every episode, Luke for me is the real star of the show. I think this is the best role Luke has played so far in his career and you just know the very best is still to come from him.

She couldn’t be more excited and told me:“I've always dreamed big and whether it’s having a successful business or appearing on The Apprentice, one thing’s for sure it was imperative just to make a start. Women’s fashion retailer Sophia Amoruso once said ‘If you’re dreaming big, don't be discouraged if you have to start small, it worked for me.’ Her words resonate with my small beginnings and have kept me inspired. “I’ll still operate my stall on the market, as this was my beginning, so it’s very sentimental to me but my main focus will be on my new shop. I’ll be adding to it all of the time and hope to offer items that you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere else. “It’s thanks to the support of my market customers and to friends like you Pep (I’m blushing Nurun) that I’ve been able to open my shop and I look forward to welcoming some familiar faces.”

He plays ‘Elvis’ a Special Forces operative who’s fearless, impulsive, self-confident, determined and cool under pressure. Elvis wants to make the world a better place, but he wants to do it his way – and then of course there’s the love interest, Georgie, played by Michelle. My TV screen has never looked so good with Luke and Michelle dominating it so well. I’m hooked and Luke’s performance is a winner. BACK IN THE DAY Who remembers the lovely Suzanne Cooper pictured here in what I think was the VIP lounge at Liquid? Suzanne and hubby Howard managed 5th Avenue for years before taking over from Mark May at Liquid and I’m guessing this snap was taken around 2001, give or take a year. It was during my transition from Sol to VK Blue as my preferred weekend beverage. If you’ve got photos from back in the day (particularly with me in them) then whizz them over to pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk and I’ll stick them on this page.

LARRY HOLMES IS JUST THE TICKET At the time of writing there are only 10 tickets left to see boxing legend Larry Holmes at The Solstice on November 18. Holmes is the only boxer to have stopped Muhammad Ali and he’s also remembered for coming face to face with another ring great, Mike Tyson. Photos: Chris Porsz

Any man who’s fought Ali and Tyson has some stories to tell and boxing greats like Holmes don’t come along that often. For tickets, call Kevin Sanders on: 07872 601467.

CITY’S PEOPLE IN REUNIONS BOOK

BRIDGE STREET’S LOWER EAST SIDE?

Around 30 years ago amateur photographer and local paramedic Chris Porsz took random photographs of complete strangers on the streets of Peterborough. Earlier this year, without any contact details but through the power of social media and word of mouth, Chris found many of his characters and returned them to the same location for a reunion photo. The result is Chris’s amazing and long-awaited book Reunions, which comprises of 135 reunions and their stories. The book, out this week, follows on from the success of his first book New England and both are a mustpurchase for anyone who’s fascinated with how the history of our city and its people have been captured by street photography. I’m a massive fan of Chris’s work and was delighted to have been able to help in his search of one particular reunion. Reunions will make a unique Christmas gift for people who love nostalgia and images of yesteryear. For details visit www.chrisporsz.com.

HARRY’S BAR FOR COCKTAILS AND TEA Formerly The Lounge (adjoining The Solstice), the city’s latest venue makeover has been named Harry’s Bar and it’s a job well done with an all day, and evening offering to suit everyone. I’m not sure who Harry is but that doesn’t matter because I was ably served up an excellent cocktail by bar tender Mark. Two

cocktails for just £11 is a steal and the menu is full of all the old favourites. Harry’s is fresh and contemporary and it’s already enjoying good lunchtime trade with the offer of three different afternoon tea options, served up seven days a week until 5pm. Nice work guys, just what the city needed that end of town.

CASTAWAY ASTON Another city celebrity currently on TV is singer Aston Merrygold and the JLS man has joined up with nine other famous faces to star on The Island with Bear Grylls. In aid of Stand Up For Cancer, Aston and the others are having to test their survival skills to the limit on a uninhabited Pacific island off the coast of Panama. The island boasts a treacherous coastline and a dense jungle, plus temperatures of up to 40 c. To start with the celebrities were given only two days of intense survival training with Bear’s team before Bear dropped them off in a small cove with just drinking water to last them two days, along with medical supplies and basic tools. 0

This is compulsive viewing but I think poor Aston would rather be in Luke Pasqualino’s shoes!

A GOODY GREAT EASTERN Good luck to the thousands of you taking part in the Perkins Great Eastern Run on Sunday October 9. The event’s come a long way since I last ran it in 2010 with it being superbly marketed and organised by organisers Peterborough City Council. But what’s most impressive is the fantastic goody bag runners will be receiving this year. I’ve had a sneak preview and it’s more than worth the entry fee alone. Trust me, you need to finish it just to get one! Entries are open until midday on October 7 and it’s on course for being the biggest ever with more than 5,500 running the half marathon alone. If you’re not running, then be sure to cheer the participants on throughout the 13-mile route.

CAUGHT IN TH

E ACT! Mayor, Councillor David Sanders in training for the annual Sausa ge Supper on Octob er 4.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

First we had Cathedral Square, then Bridge Street and Long Causeway, followed by Cowgate and now it’s the turn of Lower Bridge Street to have a much needed makeover. Domino’s Pizza recently opened up there for a reason, they must have known the city council had plans to improve the area’s public realm to include new paving, seating, coloured uplighting to trees and a new covered cycle parking shelter. For many, Lower Bridge Street is the gateway to our city centre and I for one want to feel proud and inspired during my walk into town. A lot of the works will be improvements to lighting, surfaces, cycle areas, railings and accessibility but it’s all necessary and what’s needed to finish the city off aesthetically. We’ll also see improvements to the paving between East Station Road and the Old Customs House across the Town Bridge. Hopefully the Town Bridge will get a lick of paint too. All this for just £2.1 million, which in today’s money sounds like a bit of a bargain. Let’s hope the scheme attracts retailers to the baron-looking units along there and breathe some much needed commercial life into the area. Manhattan has its buzzing Lower East Side and there’s no reason why Peterborough’s Lower Bridge Street can’t be the same.

WINTER

Forget autumn, I’m afraid it’s already begun. What’s to like about winter? White face, cold hands, runny nose, dry skin, more Greggs sausage roll, cold gear knob, de-icing, condensation, idiots still wearing t-shirts, beer doesn’t taste the same, no-one for Pimms, kids throwing fireworks, Christmas in shops by October and no-more motorsport on TV.

EVENTS

LET’S CHEER ON THE PGER RUNNERS! After all the months of training it’s finally here and now the call goes out to local people to support all those pavement pounding runners braving the Perkins Great Eastern Run and Anna’s Hope Fun Run. “Being a Peterborough lad, PGER is a staple in my running calendar and I love being around to take part. It's especially great to see Anna's Hope getting so much support through the event now, they're such a fantastic charity with a big heart and incredible dreams.”

Let’s hear it for the runners in chicken suits and super hero outfits and the hardy runners hoping for a personal best… or just to stagger over the finish! Yes, your support helps urge them over that finish line folks. ESP’s resident action man Darren Grigas has been in training once again for the event on Sunday October 9, and this year also has his kids taking part in the fun run. Darren knows just how important the support is of crowds along the route to help the runners complete the half marathon and hopes lots of people will turn out to cheer them on. “I'm not sure I'll be getting myself a new PB (personal best) myself this year but I'm still looking forward to enjoying the route, soaking up the atmosphere from the fantastic crowds and egging others along to chase their goals,” says Darren.

One of the best things about the PGER is that it takes the runners right through the heart of the city and residential areas and starts and finishes at the Embankment, so it’s ideal for crowds to line the route and enjoy the spectacle. If you’re not donning your trainers this year at least sponsor a runner to raise money for a good cause and yell some encouragement as they go by. ESP will be there to capture the action. Good luck to Darren and all the runners taking part in another great event. To find out about road closures and more details visit www.perkinsgreateasternrun.co.uk

So if you’re not sure what a Tour Of Colour is all about – allow us to explain! It’s basically a 5km fun run during which you get covered with coloured powder as you walk, run or skip your way round – it’s all safe and doesn’t stain so no worries – all in all it’s a great laugh and really good fun!

TOUR OF COLOUR RETURNS TO PETERBOROUGH FOR HALLOWEEN A great new event in the city makes a return this month – with a special Halloween theme! The Tour of Colour had its inaugural running at the East of England Showground in June this year. It was staged as part of the Tour of Cambridgeshire international cycling festival and attracted over 700 participants. The promotion for the Tour of Colour was very light and word spread rapidly on social media. Reaction to the event was exceptionally positive. The organisers, Golazo Sports: Media: Entertainment group are staging a re-run for Halloween in Ferry Meadows at Nene Park on the afternoon of Saturday October 29.

After checking in, the Colour Tourists – as the participants are known – join in the warm up routines led by a local DJ and dance troupe. Once ready you’ll start the Tour of Colour amidst a blaze of colour and music and over the next 5km visit five more colour stations before returning to the Tour of Colour Party. Friends and family are welcome to watch and enjoy the food and drinks and traditional Halloween games. The Tour of Colour is an inclusive event for all abilities so let’s get messy folks! SPORTS LEGEND KRISS AKABUSI @ NSPCC DINNER Motivational speaker Kriss Akabusi MBE has been lined up as the special guest to celebrate two decades of local fundraising for the NSPCC at a charity dinner in the city. The Peterborough NSPCC Business Support Group notches up its 20th anniversary this year and is marking the occasion with a gala dinner on Friday November 18. The black tie event at the Holiday Inn West includes a four-course dinner and a talk by the former athlete and sports/TV personality. Kriss will be talking about his own experiences of being put into care as a child, and on a lighter note will touch on his amazing sporting and television career, including Olympic and European Championship medals and his time as presenter of the classic TV show Record Breakers in the 1990s. Food Glori us Food NEW PIZZA PARLOUR & MUSIC CAFÉ The dining out scene in Peterborough just keeps on growing and Cathedral Square and the surrounding area has become a haven for foodies. Now there’s a new independent adding to the scene serving up pizzas with a difference which our Man About Town tipped you off about a couple of months back. The Pizza Parlour & Music Café on Cowgate is now open offering a unique combination of traditionally cooked Italian pasta and pizzas but will also have a great vibe with feelgood music from the 60s. There are some familiar faces involved with Andy Rowan becoming the new restaurant’s Front of House and the team have brought in the expertise of Paulo Bianchi, former owner of the highly successful Toscanini restaurant in Eye. There’s no shortage of Italian style restaurants in the city but Andy says they are bringing something different to the scene. “We have a very experienced team at The Pizza Parlour and we are well aware that the city has a good share of establishments offering Italian style cuisine. But, trust me, this is different! The business is Italian owned, local and independent and we will be the only restaurant in this area cooking with a wood oven, and that makes a huge difference. “Most pizzas in this city are cooked in ovens for four to six minutes, whereas our wood oven, being built brick by brick

on site, will hit temperatures of 550 degrees. Our pizzas will cook in a minute and a half, resulting in a better flavour and superior base texture and all our dough is prepared on site with top grade ‘00’ flour twice daily.” Paulo Bianchi has been brought in to create the menus, oversee recipes and organise the kitchen. “Our aim is to cook great food for people who want to enjoy the real flavour of Italy in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. We have a concise menu which will be cooked to order, with blackboard specials alongside classic salads, grills and of course, traditional desserts. And yes we will offer gluten-free options too.” The team are importing beers and a house-wine direct from the Italian growers and the restaurant is open from early until late. www.thepizzaparlourpeterborough.co.uk

WAGAMAMA OPEN AT LAST!

Karen says – “I thought it was fabulous, I really enjoyed the freshness of the food, as well as being able to watch the cooks in action.

“As it’s a particular concern of mine, I asked about how they handled nut allergies and was assured the preparation of nut free dishes is done using different utensils and well away from any other food preparation which is good to know.

The much anticipated new wagamama restaurant has recently opened on Long Causeway in Peterborough serving fresh Japanese-inspired cuisine.

“All in all I like it and will definitely be going back soon!”

There’s been a rush to try out the new 151 seat restaurant and ESP’s resident nutritionist and Wellbeing columnist Karen Devine was there for the launch.

It’s great to see this leading name come to the city with its delicious variety of new and classic dishes from the iconic menu including wagamama’s famed ramen; bowls of

fragrant soup filled with noodles, plus a range of curries, noodle dishes, sides, all made fresh to order. Simon Cope, Global Brand Director said he’s delighted to have opened in Peterborough – “Wagamama will continue to reinforce positive eating by using fresh ingredients, served in atmospheric surroundings. We look forward to hearing what our new and valued customers in Peterborough make of our arrival and hope that they enjoy all we have to offer.”

It’s all kicked off recently with the fuss over the Great British Bake Off’s move to Channel 4 coinciding with fans enjoying what looks like the last of the series in its present guise on the BBC. However, budding star bakers will battle it out to see if they’ve got what it takes to impress the judges with scrumptious scones and luscious loaves right here in Peterborough. The search for the region’s best bakers; men, women and children has been launched by the WI as part of the Peterborough Autumn Food & Country Fair on Sunday October 9. Keen to shake off the ‘stuffy and formal’ image often unfairly associated with the WI, members from Peterborough and Huntingdon will be setting up their Bake Off tent (actually the Atrium at the Peterborough Arena) to stage their Open Baking Competition. The judges will be making sure there are no soggy bottoms or overworked bread dough in sight so make sure drop by to watch! For details about the show visit www.autumnfoodand countryfair.co.uk

He may soon be back on our TV screens, all being well, but has been busy writing and directing his own projects.

Amy and David

Local actor David Proud may soon be back on our TV screens but his latest role has seen him star in his own wedding! Here at ESP we’ve long been supporters of the Peterborough actor and film maker who’s another local success story we’re proud (sorry!) to see doing well. Now it’s also a pleasure to congratulate him and his wife Amy following their recent wedding at Normanton Church in Rutland. The former EastEnders star tied the knot with his childhood sweetheart Amy Joy, who was the first girl he took on a date when they met at Sir Harry Smith’s school and despite losing touch they found each other 14 years later and fell in love! “The highlight was being able to say ‘I do’ in front of our friends and family,” said David reflecting on their big day.“Life gets busy and it was so lovely to have time to spend with people and celebrate the day. When we organised our guest list between us we could have invited so many people, so we took the decision to keep it relatively small and intimate so we got chance to talk to everyone, the whole day from start to finish was magical.” Since making his debut in children’s TV series Desperados he went on to star in EastEnders as Adam Best, BBC drama The Best of Men, appeared in the Secret Diary of a Call Girl, Doctors, TV

David and Ashley Kumar (from EastEnders and Spooks) and Jason Maza (who’s in the new Brotherhood film).

“I’m working across a mix of acting, writing and producing, I'm attached as lead to a new sitcom in development with a broadcaster that shall remain nameless for now, which would thrust me back into acting for a while but at the moment I’m enjoying writing so much. “I have a few scripts at different stages of production and have just picked up another commission for a play. The writing is so cathartic and I get to have a bigger impact on disability representation. I'm also directing for the first time in November and about to begin casting for that, it’s a comical short that has been picked up by a company for international release.” His wife Amy is a burlesque dancer and model and looked every inch the gorgeous bride in a 50’s style gown. “We are both very supportive of each other,” said David. “Amy has had some beautiful modelling jobs and I'm so proud of her work, she gets offered a lot more than she agrees too and is very selective in who she works with.” Their wedding day was a really local affair using Jamming with Gizz Butt

“We are really blessed to know some great local creative people and Peterborough is full of so much talent,” David told ESP. “We also wanted to use friends and people we know as looking back in a few years it'll be nice to remember who made our day special. Gizz Butt for example is a very dear friend of ours and to know that he rocked our magic day is a memory we will never forget. “We had a handful of actors there and one of my favourite directors but they are all people Amy and I count as really close friends. Once you start inviting everyone you've ever worked with it gets a little out of hand, although my Aunt Janet was disappointed I hadn't invited John Partridge (Christian from EE) as apparently she has a bit of a crush on him, I apologised and said I would invite him to the anniversary party! I pointed her in the direction of Ashley Kumar who was in EastEnders with me and I think she had a photo with him instead, he's equally as dapper.” One of the things we like about David is that he’s always generously shared his experience with others keen to get into the industry. “I've just finished writing a book on this very topic to try and help pass on my decade of experience and it is going to be published in the next few months,” he told us.“I'd say don't limit yourself to any one discipline, be creative always and in all ways. Working in the media is a marathon and not a sprint, if you love film making that much you will get there, but take it one step at a time and enjoy every minute of the journey.” If you’d like to get any advice from David he’s always open to chat on his twitter feed @prouddavid.

ESP’s Sarah Tempest chats to Rebecca Ferguson, our cover star and all round ‘superwoman’….

W

ith a string of hit singles under her belt and about to release her third studio album, Rebecca Ferguson stands alongside Olly Murs, One Direction and JLS in proving that it’s often the runners up that go on Sarah Tempest to be the real winners of the X Factor. But, rejected in the early rounds TWICE before her eventual break on the 2010 series of X Factor, as well as rejection from P Diddy’s American show Starmaker, it’s been a long and arduous journey to success, both personally and professionally, for the Liverpool singer. “No-one was interested!” she says of her early attempts at a singing career. “I was always writing and trying to be discovered and I kept going for auditions and being told ‘no’ but, thankfully, I believe everything falls into place when it’s meant to so maybe it just wasn’t my time. I did get offered an audition for a big West End show and had interest from an agent but I’d just found out I was pregnant with my first daughter. I don’t know what would’ve come of it but, with the baby, I just couldn’t be in two places at once.” Becoming a mum to Lillie-May and Karl in her teens, and splitting from their father, meant following her dreams and pursuing success was even more of a struggle for Rebecca.“Having my kids young did hold me back,” she admits,“but I think if you really want something, you can make it work.” Now 30, Rebecca went on to have another daughter, Arabella, who’s nearly 2 but a“horrible, messy break up” with the father (who walked out whilst she was pregnant) led to more heartache and dark days.“It’s been tough,” she confesses.“One of my friends said to me ‘I thought that would be the end of you, I genuinely didn’t think you’d build yourself back up’ but I’ve got my mum and tough Jamaican and English nans so I come from really strong independent women. Maybe it’s passed down.” And it’s a measure of those tough genes that Rebecca was able to channel that heartbreak to write her new album.“I’ve called it Superwoman because I just felt I’d overcome a lot. I felt so strong and I thought, you know what, I am a bit of a superwoman! The whole album is about feeling empowered. When you go through a break up, you always think that you’re never going to get over it so I tried to make an album that makes you feel better. It goes through all the different emotions but overall it’s really positive and hopefully it will help people.” With all the knocks she’s experienced, Rebecca has some important life lessons for her daughters.“Be independent,” she laughs.“Where I’m from, you’re encouraged to find a man that’ll look after you but, unfortunately, it’s in the culture now that relationships are so replaceable so I’d love to teach Lillie and Arabella not to be reliant on a man for anything. Also, my mum taught me that ‘there’s good in absolutely everyone’ and I wish she hadn’t because it’s not true! We live in a lovely world with lots of lovely people but there are some that just aren’t good and it would have saved me a lot of heartache looking for it in people that were just bad!” Writing the album was clearly a hugely cathartic experience for Rebecca and she admits she can’t wait to take it on tour.“I’m confident, happy and in a really good place. I just want people to come and have a really good time. I’ve realised that life is short and you need to get up there and chase your dreams and enjoy life!” And from the excitement in her voice, it’s clear Rebecca Ferguson intends to do just that! Rebecca’s single Bones is out now, the album Superwoman is set for release on October 14 and full details of her tour which kicks off on October 23 can be found at www.rebeccaofficial.com

DOCTOR STRANGE Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor Director: Scott Derrickson One of the most interestingly mysterious of all Marvel super heroes gets his first major big screen outing as part of the comic book pantheon’s third phase.

Avengers for 2018’s Infinity War – he must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond to protect the greater Marvel universe.

British star Benedict Cumberbatch stars as talented neurosurgeon Dr Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put his ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions.

Rachel McAdams (Spotlight) plays the love interest, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) the best friend, Tilda Swinton (The Beach) stars as his mentor, and Mads Mikkelson (Casino Royale) is the main protagonist.

In this fantasy story – that will undoubtedly solidify him as a pivotal character when joining the

Which makes this look rather intriguing – and it should at least do Ant-Man type business for Disney.

One of the most anticipated movies of the season sees Emily Blunt (Sicario) headline this movie adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ acclaimed novel. She stars as divorcee Rachel Watson, who becomes entangled in a missing person investigation after she spots a shocking incident – involving a young woman (The Magnificent Seven’s Haley Bennett) – from the train on her daily New York commute, which sends shockwaves through her own life as well as the local community.

Release dates were correct at time of going to press but could be subject to change.

Mark Wahlberg re-teams with Lone Survivor director Peter Berg in this biographical disaster thriller based on the 2010 Deepwater Horizon rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico – which cost lives and BP billions in damages. Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Kate Hudson and Maze Runner’s Dylan O’Brien complete an all-star cast for this movie, which is garnering good early reviews.

JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK Despite naysayers putting ‘The Cruiser’ down for saying he was too small for the title role from Lee Child’s iconic novels – the 2012 first film had enough stellar feedback for this action sequel from the director of Blood Diamond to be given the green light. This time Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) must uncover the truth behind a major government conspiracy in order to clear his name after being accused of a 16year-old homicide. Cobie Smulders (Avengers Assemble) co-stars.

MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN

INFERNO

TROLLS

Legendary director Tim Burton puts his trademark stamp on this family adventure which sees young Jake (Asa Butterfield, Ender’s Game) discover clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times. This leads him to Miss Peregrine (Casino Royale’s Eva Green) and her home that houses mysterious children with special powers. Samuel L Jackson, Chris O’Dowd and Judi Dench co-star.

After a seven-year hiatus Tom Hanks returns as Robert Langdon to join forces with director Ron Howard once again – for this third Dan Brown movie adaptation. After Langdon wakes up in an Italian hospital with amnesia, he teams up with Felicity Jones’ (the forthcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) doctor for a race against the clock across Europe to foil a deadly global plot.

This second major animated release of the month (Warner Bros’ Storks is released the previous week) comes from the creators of Shrek – with Pitch Perfect’s Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake (who also provided the theme tune, Can’t Stop the Feeling, for the movie) on voice duties. Russell Brand and James Corden join them for the comedic journey led by a group of optimistic trolls.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES

Released

OCT

28

Early trailers have looked good for this comedy from the director of Superbad, which sees a suburban couple – The Hangover’s Zach Galifianakis and Now You See Me’s Isla Fisher – become embroiled in an international espionage plot when they discover their seemingly perfect new neighbours – Mad Men’s John Hamm and Gal ‘Wonder Woman’ Gadot – are in fact government spies.

DEUS EX: MANKIND DIVIDED (PS4/X1/PC) This extremely worthwhile sequel to the cult tech-noir action-adventure truly provides a first class next-gen outing for elite covert agent Adam Jensen. Set just a couple of years after the events of Human Revolution and infamous ‘Aug Incident’ in Panchaea – in a bleak 2029 future – we see our hero unraveling a vast worldwide conspiracy with various factions manipulating people by twisting the public opinion on augmentation.

#####

And with some sensationally satisfying gameplay, accompanied by some slick storytelling, well-designed environments fit for exploration, and some superb technology-driven aspects – this is undoubtedly one of the year’s best that shouldn’t leave gamers divided.

PES 2017: PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER (X1/PS4/360/PS3/PC)

After years spent being in FIFA’s shadow it looks like the former king of the early ‘noughties’ has reached the football gaming summit once again – with its best iteration to date.

#####

Last year it made massive gains on EA’s also stellar game, by providing a compelling all-rounder – which has been further honed this year with some impressive gameplay tweaks.

Adjustments in goalkeeping and player AI are two notable differences in making this a more methodical experience when breaking down the opposition’s defence – which further enhances the realism of this latest version. Throw in more authentic visuals and player individuality – with decent myClub mode – then this satisfyingly hits the back of the net.

BIOSHOCK: THE COLLECTION (PS4/X1/PC)

Completing a truly impressive five-star sweep among this month’s games is this enhanced package to one of the best gaming trilogies of the past decade. You can return to the unnerving Big Daddy-inhabited underwater metropolis of Rapture with Bioshock 1 & 2, or take on a sky-grappling experience in the clouded utopia of Columbia in Bioshock: Infinite – with each offering compelling first class action-adventure’s with jaw-dropping merits.

#####

The games maybe could’ve received a touch more gloss, but there’s no denying this is one of the best collections to be given a next-gen spit and polish, with newcomers and returnees finding much to enjoy here – as this provides a truly awe-inspiring aftershock.

IT’S A STRICTLY CHRISTMAS @ SPRINGFIELDS Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole is tango-ing over to Springfields Outlet Shopping this month to add some glitz and sparkle to the centre’s Christmas lights switch on. Brendan will be getting the Christmas party started on Thursday October 27.

Photo: BBC/Jay Brooks/Matt Burlem

The professional dancer has been with the show since the start and remains a fans’ favourite as the BBC series gets into full swing on our TV screens. The popular pro who’s been with the series since the start is currently strutting his stuff with his popstar dance partner Anastacia.

would say it’ll be FAB-U-LOUS darling so make sure you’re there on the night and for some Strictly sparkle. There’s so much going on at the centre with top brands like Fat Face, Ernest Jones and Starbucks joining the retail line up so you’ll be able to kick start your Christmas shopping and pick up some gifts at a great outlet price while you’re there!

Brendan will be switching on the lights at 7.30pm and will be carrying out a signing afterwards for around half an hour to meet his many fans.

The Christmas lights switch on is followed by the Springfields Fireworks & Music Fest on Thursday November 3 – more details on that on P. 40.

The night will be hosted by Kev and Ros from Heart FM breakfast plus there’ll be entertainment from singer Chantelle Lee who’s proved popular performing at the centre throughout the summer holidays. There’ll be additional music from Peterborough Youth Choir.

Then of course Christmas gets into full swing with Father Christmas arriving on the Land Train at the centre on Thursday December 1 at 7pm and then the Grotto will open. Keep up to date with all the news on www.springfieldsshopping.co.uk.

As Strictly judge Craig Revel Horwood

It seems that our own local former Strictly Come Dancing champion can’t leave his dancing shoes behind! Olympic medal winning gymnast Louis Smith MBE has hopped off the pommel horse and back onto to the dancefloor once again. Fresh from winning his silver medal in Rio, Louis has got his wiggle on again to star in former Strictly pro dancer Robin Windsor’s production Keep Dancing and is guesting on the tour plus he’s starring with other Strictly stars in A Night at the Ballroom at the Rivoli Ballroom in London on October 21. Reflecting on his Olympic summer Louis told ESP – “Rio was incredible. There were so many scare stories about the Games and what it would be like but it really was better than a lot of people feared and I loved my time there. “It was again amazing to be a part of another Olympics for Team GB and to return with a medal again was everything I hoped for. I was just so relieved, especially with things having not gone to plan in the team final in the end, to have left with a medal in my hands. “It spurs me on to continue with my gymnastics career, although I will be taking a few months out to focus on other projects and recover! “What we achieved as Team GB was inspirational and just amazing to see, both at the Olympics and the Paralympics and I know that will do huge amounts to inspire the future generations coming through which is what it’s all about.”

PEOPLE’S STRICTLY CHAMPION IS BACK ON THE BOX Our other Strictly star – former marine Cassidy Little – is also back on our TV screens but in a very different role to performing his winning Paso Doble. Despite losing his leg while on tour in Afghanistan, Cassidy from Market Deeping stunned everyone with his amazing dance routine when he competed in the first ever People’s Strictly and took the title with pro dancer Natalie Lowe in 2015. Cassidy went on to make an acting appearance in daytime soap Doctors and this month makes an appearance on BBC’s Holby City which is likely to air on October 4 but keep an eye out!

GET A CLEAR VIEW...

BRAKES...

GET A GRIP…

You can't avoid danger if you don't see it coming. Play it safe. Be ready for any weather, any time with proper wiper blade maintenance.

Wet roads increase braking distance, giving you less time to react to danger on the road. Make sure yours don’t let you down.

Check your tyres to make sure you have the correct tread for the weather conditions and plenty of grip.

• Chattering or streaking wipers indicate that replacement is necessary

• Always replace wipers in pairs

• Replace wipers at least every six months or as needed

Don't forget the rear wiper! Rear wipers can deteriorate just as quickly and are just as important.

The components of hydraulic braking systems are subject to considerable stress and as a result require frequent inspection and routine maintenance. It’s recommended to have your brake fluid changed every 2 years regardless of the vehicle age.

The legal requirement for minimum tread depth on your tyres is 1.6milimetres, across the central 3/4 of the tyre around the complete circumference of the tyre. For safety – replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached.

POWER ON... The cold and wet can play havoc with your battery so make sure it won’t let you down. FRM will check your current car battery for FREE and recycle your old one. We have a large range, type, voltage and guarantees on car batteries.

AIR CONDITIONING... Aircon isn’t just for the summer and FRM are air conditioning specialists, installing, repairing and re-charging.

Aircon systems will control the humidity and the heater if needed will control the temperature leaving you free to enjoy the warmth without being stuffy.

Moisture on the glass will be evaporated very rapidly so you can see through the windscreen and all the other glass clearly without a film of mist. Aircon systems will work long before a screen-heater has had a chance to warm up so is effective for rapid de-misting and good all round visibility. Call Customer Services on 01733 333 838

STUART’S SHOW WINNING RS Yellow. It’s a colour that’s usually a bit like Marmite when it comes to cars but on the classic scene it has to be one of the best shades there is.

F

errari used it to great effect for years, starting with the Dino. Fiat bravely offered their modern day classic Coupe in yellow and VW campers (and the Beetle) I think look best in the sunshine colour.

What’s good enough for Ferrari is good enough for Ford and I have to say this RS2000 owned by Stuart Simmonds is an absolute belter in yellow. I’ve known Stuart for years and he’s always been a Ford man. He used to own an absolute peach of an Escort RS Turbo, which he regrettably sold, so I’m glad he’s got his Ford mojo back with this lovely MK 2.

34

www.espmag.co.uk

Stuart’s is a rare 1978 Ford Escort RS2000 ‘Base’ model. This means unlike the RS2000 and RS2000 Custom models, it didn’t come with alloy wheels, Recaro seats, a radio or even a clock. He told me: “A lot of people upgraded the Base models to make them look like Customs but mine’s a bit of a rare beast, as it is totally unmolested apart from a few minor engine mods and a five-speed gearbox. I’ve owned it for 10 years after purchasing it from a family friend who had it from new, so I know its history.” Stuart’s car was actually first registered on British Forces

Germany (BFG) registration plates, as at the time the former keeper was based at RAF Wildenrath in Germany. It was brought to the UK in 1980 and registered by the DVLA as HEW 763W (the original German plate is pictured on the vehicle). From that point the RS was used daily up until around 30 years ago when it was garaged. It was almost 10 years before Stuart got his hands on it. “I only had one garage and that’s where my RS Turbo lived but I had to have the RS2000 and made the heart-breaking decision to sell the Turbo. My new wheels lived in the garage for a few years whilst I saved like mad for the money I needed to get it back to its former glory. It underwent a full bare-metal restoration by Mick Dearing in Bourne in 2010 and she’s been gleaming ever since. “My first car when I was 18 was a MK2 Escort 1.3L. I’ve loved them ever since but never dreamed I would own an RS2000, so you can imagine how I feel when I take it to local shows – especially after it won Best In Class this year at Maxey!” What I love about classic cars is their rawness and simplicity. They have

character and soul and you do the driving instead of technology doing it for you. Stuart’s of the same ilk, he’s old school and appreciates there’s no better driving experience than in a classic. “Being behind the wheel in this car is like a step back in time. There’s nothing computerised in the car to distract you, it’s just you and the real deal. There’s nothing else to do or think about apart from driving it, enjoying it and listening to the sound of the engine and roar from the exhaust. It’s a real head turner and even though I’ve been asked on numerous occasions if I’d be interested in selling her, I’d never do it because she’s my pride and joy and that’s the way I want it to stay!” If you’d like your pride and joy to feature here, whether it has four wheels, two (or three!) just email us on office@espmag.co.uk.

FRM WILL GET YOUR CAR WINTER READY

The ULTIMATE Combat Gaming Experience

It pains me to think about it but the colder weather is on its way and that means time for a little TLC for the car.

Airsoft is a military simulation game similar to paintball. It costs a lot less to play, it hurts less and uses realistic looking replica weapons.

Good to see that FRM Automotive are offering their free winter health checks once again. Chilly mornings will mean it’s ice scrapers at the ready and wipers glued to a frosty screen so best get prepared. If you want to be thorough FRM do a more detailed winter check for £20 which includes tyre pressure and tread depth check, coolant check, battery check and a winter driving pack including anti freeze, ice scraper and screen wash. Francis Richards at FRM in Westwood told me – “At this time of year you need to consider checking you have good tread on your tyres for winter driving, that your brakes are in good condition to stop you safely in bad weather and that you have good window wipers that are effective in the rain. “Your air conditioning isn’t just for the summer either. If it’s in good working order it’ll be far more effective at quickly demisting your windows for the best all round visibility.” So be winter wise and make sure your car is fit and healthy to take on the worst of the weather. Beauty News MaC heads to the Boro! In the best news ever this month, Cosmetics specialist MAC have announced their plans to open a store in Peterborough. They will be in Queensgate Shopping Centre in the former Sue Ryder shop.

thiNk piNk it’s Breast CaNCer awareNess MoNth Sadly, every year 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK – that’s one person every 10 minutes. That’s why we need to spread the word about Breast Cancer Awareness Month – an annual campaign during October. 4. Describe and be specific about your symptoms while talking with your doctor. Breast Cancer Awareness Month reminds us all to check for symptoms, this can include monthly self-examinations or by attending a scan. Remember, it’s not just older women who experience breast cancer, it does happen at a younger age also. If you have any worries, it’s vital that you let your Doctor know exactly how you’re feeling. Here are 5 steps to avoid misdiagnosis: 1. Seek a specialist. 2. Write down each symptom. 3. Know your medical history.

5. Question. Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you possibly can. And stand your ground if you are still certain something isn’t right. Of course this month we’re all being urged to ‘think pink’ to fundraise for life safe saving research and there are several pink themed ways of doing this and various charities to support so to find out more visit www.breastcancercare.org.uk /the-big-pink All funds raised throughout October will help Breast Cancer Care to continue to

provide free services including; support over the phone with a nurse or someone who’s been there, welcoming online forums, reliable information and local group support. Or there’s the Breast Cancer Now campaign urging us to don our best pink outfits and raise cash – take a look at www.wearitpink.org. They use the money you raise to fund world-class breast cancer researchers across the UK and Ireland. Together, they’re working to discover how to prevent breast cancer, how to detect it earlier and how to treat it effectively at every stage so they can stop the disease taking lives.

weddiNG treNds I had the absolute pleasure of being a bridesmaid recently, to a great friend and ESP colleague Stephanie Phillips (congratulations to you and Andy again). Luckily I had the waterproof mascara out as it was a beautiful day. It also meant I had an extra reason to treat myself to some pampering. I went down to Serenity Loves Hair and Beauty Salon on Oundle Road, for a Gellicure Nail treatment which cost £25. They were very friendly and did a great job, matching the pink blush bridesmaid dress I described with a nail colour. Thanks guys and I will be back again soon. I then had my hair done (at the ungodly hour of 6am) with the lovely Laura from Hampton Hack Shack. She created a great vintage inspired hair roll, even with my very fine hair and then decorated with summer flowers. She also helped us get our wedding day makeup just right. If you need some hair and make-up advice, check out the Hampton Hack Shack on Facebook. Thanks Laura!

MAC is known for appealing to ‘All Ages, All Races, All Sexes’. They’ve been setting trends backstage at fashion weeks around the world for years. Mark Broadhead, Centre Director at Queensgate Shopping Centre told me – “When we announced Mac Cosmetics was coming to Queensgate, social media went into overdrive and since then we’ve been flooded with the same question: when is it opening? We don’t have a confirmed date yet but expect the store to open before the end of November – just in time for Christmas! “This really is a fantastic brand to come to Queensgate, and for central Peterborough, and for this to be a standalone store will attract people from further afield. This is the first of more big brands to announce in the near future, so this is a very exciting time for Queensgate.” We’ll bring you news of an opening date when we can. But make sure you look out for my favourite MAC product and one of their best sellers: Ariana Grande’s shade of VIVA GLAM Lipstick in a matte orchid pink.

She’s come a long way since her Spice Girl days, but is delivering the same ‘Girl Power message’ with her new brand. She’s said in the press – "I want to make women feel empowered, to feel sexy and confident. This makeup does that. It was really about not compromising and creating pieces that I wanted to wear myself.” Her products are currently exclusive to Selfridges, so watch this space. If you want to try some out, I recommend her highlighter in Modern Mercury, which is £48. In Victoria’s photographs she always has amazing cheek bones… and now we can get the look too!

BEING

ARE YOU A SMOOTH(IE) OPERATOR OR DO YOU LET LOOSE WITH THE JUICE? It’s been just over 19 years since I gave my first ever talk on the health benefits of juicing and blending (or smoothies as they are now known) with a small group of women in a village hall. At that time bread making machines were in most household kitchens so introducing my juicer was a little way out at that time. Today, passing someone in the street with a cup of green liquid in hand would not get a second glance. Many people own a juicer or smoothie maker today, even if yours may be collecting dust in the back of a cupboard locked up with all those good intentions! To juice or to smoothie that is the question? What is a smoothie? The mechanics of the smoothie machine break down the fibre helping to release all the nutrients and phytonutrients which are more readily absorbed when we drink it. Our teeth are designed to tear and break open the fibre by our chewing action. It’s been said many times that we should chew our food until it is a liquid – well a smoothie kind of does that for us. What is a juicer/juice? A juicer separates the fibre and releases all the liquid nutrients of the plant, it is therefore not a ‘true’ whole food after you have juiced the produce. A juicer extracts the liquid one end whilst throwing the pulp out the other. The key point to smoothies and/or juicing is that you’re able to boost your levels of veggies and fruits without much effort. Both take centre stage for boosting health but they do have a few differences. One is certainly not better than the other. What are the benefits of juices or smoothies? Smoothies • As the fibre remains it sweeps through the small and large intestine helping to clear out toxins as well as being a food source for our favourable bacteria and supports elimination. • You can blitz up a host of veggies, fruits and additional seeds or anything else you want to add into them to make it a quick go to

breakfast or even a fast food meal anytime if you’re likely to skip a meal. I would add to this though that too many ingredients such as protein powders, nuts, seeds, coconut milks etc can make it heavy and cause a lot of bloating for some, so I like to keep mine simple – but hey, it’s your smoothie so your choice! • Nutrients are already released and much easier to absorb as it is almost pre-digested, a big relief for our digestive system as it gets a little sabbatical from too much work (digestion uses up so much energy). • A great way to fuel the body in a faster time as the nutrients are ready to be taken into the cells. • The fibre that remains in the smoothie helps to lessen sugar and carb cravings, as it keeps you fuller for longer.

Juices • You can get a greater quantity of veggies in a juicer than a blended smoothie, the juicer extracts the juicy nutrients and spits out the fibre. Whilst it is fibreless it can quadruple your intake of greens and other colourful veggies. • Takes a huge burden off digestion as our digestive system has little work to do, the juice is readily available to drink and allow the nutrients to be taken up by the cells rapidly. • A great way to fast and cleanse (always take advice) as the higher quantity of produce without fibre allows the energy which is normally used up in digestion to be freed up for healing and regeneration instead. • Can really help those with a weak digestive system. • Can increase energy levels and also boost immunity.

• It gives us a host of live enzymes that are destroyed with cooking – only when we eat raw foods do we get the enzymes that our body needs for optimal health and wellness.

• Can help to refresh the system after a time of overload such as after Christmas, Easter or even the summer months of BBQ’s, weddings etc.

• May help support immunity as you’re getting a wider range of nutrients from various fruits and veggies as well as being able to consume more than you would at one sitting.

• A natural way to hydrate.

• A great way to get more veggies and fruits into the kids, or even the big kids!

In Health,

There are benefits to using both as you can see, both offer excellent ways of nutrient boosting and different reasons to use one over the other.

FIREWORK FIESTA SET TO LIGHT UP “Remember, remember the fifth of November….” and this year Peterborough’s biggest and most spectacular community firework display will be a night to remember, as it takes place on the traditional bonfire night date, Saturday November 5, at the Peterborough Arena, East of England Showground. This one is well established as the region’s premier firework display and a leading local charity fundraiser. Once again there’ll be a truly spectacular display of fireworks by Titanium, the company behind national celebration fireworks such as the Commonwealth Games and New Year displays in London and Edinburgh. Live music will be hosted by Heart FM and there’ll be food outlets, fairground rides and great family entertainment. Around 10,000 visitors enjoyed last year’s event and the organisers tell us traffic plans are in place to ease the departure process by managing the traffic flow and increasing the number of exits off the Showground at the event. Organised by the Rotary Clubs of Peterborough and Peterborough Minster and Round Table, Firework Fiesta raised a record-breaking £33,000 which was distributed to a multitude of charities and good causes in Peterborough. Advance tickets for Firework Fiesta go on sale this month priced £3 for children aged under 15 (under 2 years are free); £7 for adults and can be purchased from the Ticket Factory or from the following outlets (cash only): Van Hage Garden Centre, Queensgate Information Desk (upper ground floor), Peterborough Visitor Information Centre (Bridge Street). The Cresset (Bretton), Notcutts Garden Centre, Ferry Meadows Visitor Centre and Caravan Park. Tickets are also available on the gate at £5 (child) and £10 (adult). For more details visit www.fireworkfiesta.com.

A decade of Darragh...

Darragh MacAnthony celebrating promotion with Darren Ferguson

Photo: Melanie Escombe

what a decade it’s been with three promotions and a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success.

Elton John

I think it is fair to say that last month was certainly pretty eventful. I mentioned the new Life Wall in last month’s column in ESP and that created a bit of a buzz and to top it off, I made a call to Sir Elton John and he’s agreed to do a concert at the ABAX Stadium next year. Okay, part of that sentence is untrue. Either way, Elton John will become the first musical act to play a live concert at the stadium and it’s something that we’re all looking forward too. (To find out more about how you can purchase tickets, visit the club website, www.theposh.com).

On the pitch, it’s been a bit frustrating with a number of late goals costing us points, but everyone remains positive that we can enjoy a wonderful campaign. Of course, September was also the 10-year anniversary for club chairman and owner Darragh MacAnthony and

The promotion at Colchester is a day that will certainly live long in my memory. Being doused in champagne at Hereford when we won automatic promotion from League Two – the first success under Darragh’s rule – was something that will never be forgotten, particularly because I needed to then buy a new suit. And don’t get me started on the play-off success at Old Trafford – one of the moments of my life. There have been disappointments along the way, of course there have, if you analyse the club’s history, this is still without doubt, the most successful period and that would not be possible without the influence of Darragh. Not only does he keep the club going financially, but he’s also raised the profile of the club and trust me when I say this, he cares deeply about this football club.

“It has been a memorable 10 years that is for sure,” Darragh said. “Buying a football club was always something that I wanted to do and looking back over the last decade, it has certainly had its up and downs, but we have enjoyed some wonderful days. “The city has really taken to me. I go into the town centre, I visit the Cathedral and I like coming into Peterborough.” The biggest way to celebrate those 10 years would undoubtedly be promotion back to the Championship and everyone at the club is striving to achieve that. We have one or two more games on Sky to look forward to in the next couple of months, but the best way to watch Posh is by coming to the ABAX. You can view the full fixture list and how you can buy tickets at www.theposh.com.

A PINT OF COMEDY

THE GREAT BRITISH JOKE OFF

I'd loved to have been in the meeting when Channel 4 were negotiating with the production company who own the rights to the Bake Off. I'm pretty sure they put Father Ted in charge, but due to an urgent ecumenical matter, Dougal and Mrs Doyle went instead... "Good news Ted, me and Mrs Doyle have got Channel 4 the Bake Off from the BBC." "That's right Father, I made them all a nice cup of tea and when they weren't sure about moving channels I kept saying 'Go on, go on, go on, go on'. I left Dougal to agree a price. "Ted, the production company said the BBC had offered £15million, so I offered them £125million and would you believe it they agreed straight away!" Meanwhile onto comedy that doesn't come out of my sitcom-obsessed mind, and the new season of stand up comedy at venues across Peterborough and surrounding areas has begun. There are plenty of opportunities to get out and see familiar faces and rising stars of the comedy world and hear laughter coming out of your face for an hour or two. Here's a selection of comedians who'll be baking up a fresh batch of jokes that you might like to try... Ross Noble, everybody's favourite randomist is back with his show Brain Dump on October 30 at the Cresset. As always Ross has lots of stuff backing up in his head and it's time to let it all out. Famed for his super quick freewheeling style and highly imaginative flights it’s bound to be a good night.

The Joy of Mincing is Julian Clary’s celebration of 30 years as a camp comedian and on stage he will proudly wear his well-deserved M.B.E (Mincer of the British Empire) on November 2. It was the last thing he expected to receive when he knelt down in front of Prince Charles in the scullery at Buckingham Palace… And because Julian gives and gives (until it hurts) he’ll be handing out honours to the lucky few in the audience too. Go and witness a masterclass in camp comedy. There are only a few tickets left for Al Murray at the Cresset on November 16 so best be quick! Penny Hansen from The Cresset also told me – "We are in discussions with some other big names and have our fingers crossed but can't reveal those just yet. “John Bishop told me that comedians love the Cresset as a venue because it's not a traditional theatre with a balcony and they can see their audience up close and see their reactions." Lee Nelson’s already booked in for next May and there's also a very big name they’re trying to secure who sold out in just 3 hours last time so watch this space! For more comedy suggestions at other venues, see the gig guide opposite.

A new regular comedy evening in the Cellar Bar at Stamford Arts Centre features American stand-up and improviser Kate Mccabe, Jason Neale the main man from Leicester’s Proper Funny club and Sarah Johnson a likeable rising star on the Midlands comedy scene. Box office: 01780 763203.

Keith Dalton has the ESP guide to the best news and views from the local live music scene…

What great news to hear that Sir Elton John is to visit Peterborough on June 11 next year. And congratulations to the guys at Posh for securing the concert for the city at the ABAX Stadium. Legends don't come much bigger than Sir Elton as his superb performance in Hyde Park showed recently and it really is going to be a prestigious event.

The Parkway Club is the venue for a Special Olympics Rock ‘n’ Roll Dance starring The Houndogs on Friday October 28. It includes a sausage and chips supper and is aimed at raising money for Peterborough Special Olympics’ attendance at next year’s National Summer Games in Sheffield.

A similar event last year proved a huge success and the organisers are hoping for a sell out gig this year. With live rock ‘n’ roll music in short supply, and support from The City Sounds Disco, I suggest you book your ticket in advance if you want to jive. Contact The Parkway Club on 07963 214349.

The Tour That Never Ends – The Sensational 60’s Experience returns yet again to The Cresset on Friday October 28. It has been there more than once and the reason for its return is its popularity.

There’s a new tribute band in town! The Outlaw Eagles were formed in late 2015 and are all Eagles admirers and they perform a set which spans the entire Eagles’ recording career from 1971 to the 1990s and beyond. That covers their early country influence and their development into that unique guitar rock sound. Tony Harris together with brothers Richard and Mark Hall form the three duelling guitars at the core of the band’s music, and they are joined by Alec Rowsell on bass and drummer Andrew Cox. Peterborough music fans will be familiar with some of the names though their appearances in bands like Leon, The Guards and Isiah. You can catch the Outlaw Eagles on Sunday October 2 at the Cherry Tree, Oundle Road 7pm start, and at the Dragon, Werrington at 9pm on Saturday October 8. Their website is www.outlaw-eagles.com.

This year’s explosive tour features seven legendary names from the 1960’s taking to the stage.

Halloween is on the way at the end of the month and Stamford Corn Exchange have a show to get you in the mood for the spooky night. It features the return of The Zoots who proved very popular on their previous appearance at the venue. As usual their set will include music from a host of eras and an array of artists you’ll know and love. Artists like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Beatles, Stones, T.Rex Madness, Oasis, and Pharrell Williams span generations and the one thing that’s certain is, that besides that music the show will be lively and I’m sure special Halloween dress will be on stage. The band also tell me dressing up in the audience is positively encouraged for the night. The Zoots have toured over 30 countries, performed over 1000 shows, recorded two successful albums and travelled over 50,000 miles to bring their harmonies and infectious stage presence to music lovers. No wonder tickets are already in high demand for this one night only Spooktastic concert on Saturday October 29. You can book yours from the box office of the Stamford Corn Exchange on 01780 766455.

Herman’s Hermits, Chris Farlowe, New Amen Corner, The Swinging Blue Jeans, The Fortunes, The Ivy League and Alan Mosca from Freddie and The Dreamers. Between them, they must total over 100 UK Top 20 hits including many number ones from the 60’s. I was looking through the list and if I had to name one song from all those giant hits it would undoubtedly be Chris Farlowe’s classic Out of Time – a perfect song and what a voice. Coincidentally, this year is the 50th anniversary of the song topping the charts. It was in the charts for 13 weeks, reached Number 1 and coincided with England winning the World Cup in 1966 (this tour just happens to have 66 dates). It’s also rumoured that this will be the last chance for Peterborough audiences to see The Ivy League in concert, as they are retiring after The Sensational 60’s Experience Tour, although you never know, like they say – it’s the tour that never ends! Tickets available from the Cresset box office on 01733 265705.

THIN LIZZY TRIBUTE DEDICATION 13 Dedication 13, the annual event which pays homage to rock legend Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy, takes place on Saturday October 22. The venue is The Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club (PSL) on Lincoln Road.

WESTLIFE STAR SHANE LIVE IN CITY Westlife frontman Shane Filan has announced the second leg of his major indoor UK tour for October 2016, and it includes The Cresset in Peterborough onTuesday October 18. In the wake of the huge success of both his Right Here Tour in early 2016 and the Right Here album the Irish pop sensation will perform a number of Westlife favourites as well as his own recent tracks.

Local organiser Terry Narraine, who’s a massive Thin Lizzy fan himself, told me – “This year’s Dedication coincides with the 40th Anniversary of the iconic Thin Lizzy album Jailbreak which included the worldwide rock anthem The Boys Are Back In Town, a song which Phil is greatly remembered for and title track Jailbreak of the same album.” (Also my favourite Emerald) So did Terry ever envisage reaching 13 years of Dedications? “Our Dedication show was only meant to be a one off gesture back in 2003 at what used to be the old Coach and Horses pub. But, due to public demand, it’s reached the 13th year and we’re now at The PSL Club (Peterborough Sports and Leisure Club) on Lincoln Road which is run by Irish owners, John and Maggie Burns, and that seems only appropriate for the theme of our show.”

Westlife have been one of the world’s most successful bands of the last few decades, scoring multiple Number Ones all over the world, and The Cresset appearance will give Peterborough fans the opportunity to see him doing what he loves best; entertaining the crowd and singing from the heart. Announcing the dates for the tour, Shane said, “The Right Here Tour earlier in the year was fantastic and I was really proud of how this transcended over so many different venues and places that I hadn’t performed in before. It was incredible to see the reaction from fans, to have them there with me enjoying the songs and joining in. The tour was such a great experience and we have had so many requests for more dates that we thought we might as well give the fans what they want, and go back out on the road in October. I am really excited about this new phase in the tour and looking forward to seeing everyone at The Cresset in Peterborough – it’s going to be a great night!” The release of the Right Here album has cemented Shane’s position as one of the UK’s most popular male solo artists and the night’s going to be a unique opportunity for Westlife fans to get close to one of their idols. The box office of the Cresset is 01733 265705.

Philomena Lynott, Phil's mother will be making the trip from Dublin as special guest to help the show raise funds for The Roisin Dubh Trust, which was set up in memory of her son in order to help underprivileged children in Ireland and help support mothers who’ve lost their children at an early age. Four bands take the stage starting at 6.30pm. Peterborough's own Thin Lizzy tribute band Lizzy On The Loose headline with a greatest hits set, and special guests Black Rose (Society) from Northampton return after previous Dedication success. Pandora's Box, a female fronted classic rock covers band are making their debut this year and finally, show openers are Third Stone From The Sun, who are back by popular demand. Tickets for Dedication 13 on October 22 can be obtained in advance from Terry Naraine on 07796 250071 or direct from The PSL Club or on the door on the night of the show.

New Peterborough band Idolising Nova who we told you about a few months ago have just released their new single Take On The World. It’s an excellent follow up to the band’s previous success (their version of Robyn’s Dancing on my Own) which came out earlier this year. In addition to the singles it’s been a busy year because there have been numerous live appearances and radio dates. So what now? Bassist Jack Smith told ESP – “We're writing and recording loads at the moment, so we'll have more new music out in the near future. We plan to spend the rest of 2016 writing and recording and then book as many gigs as possible all over the UK from early next year, which sounds much further away than it actually is!

IDOLISING NOVA READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD

“We had a message from Janice Long, BBC Radio 2 DJ saying that she loves Take On The World and that she was going to play it on her show that night. We were so shocked, excited and proud that she is playing it. This is the first song we've written as a three-piece, which we wrote, recorded and mixed in Kris' bedroom, it's just crazy.” You can view a video on You Tube of Idolising Nova performing a stripped back version of Take On The World live on BBC Cambridgeshire Introducing.
