There’s plenty of entertainment in store this Christmas at the Fox & Hounds, Longthorpe. THE BOY’S HEAD RE-OPENS The Boy’s Head on Oundle Road has temporarily reopened for business and has some great plans in the pipeline. They’ll be open through December, but as of January they’ll close for 4-8 weeks for a major refurbishment by the Scottish & Newcastle pub company. The plans are looking fantastic, and with a new garden area being put in place out the front, a new restaurant opening inside, and a new menu with food on the go every day – who wouldn’t be impressed! A stunning new show is coming to the Stamford Arts Centre stage later in the month. The famous Welsh folk tale of love and loss will be interpreted by talented ballet dancers with breathtaking choreography. Be prepared to feel the passion, as the dancers interpret the story of the Lady of Llyn y Fan Fach, the fair bride lured from her underwater home to become a farmer’s wife on the Brecon Beacons. The Nunkie Theatre Company presents two real spine chillers as another addition to the Stamford Festival Of Ghosts. The first story offers one of M.R James’ most memorable villains, followed by the second spooky story of a young archaeologist who’s haunted and hunted by a guardian of an ancient treasure. BLACK COMEDY @ THE KEY The show Black Comedy will be quite a challenge for Mask Theatre as in this play the usual conditions of light and dark are reversed: when the lights are 'on' we see nothing but darkness; when they’re ‘off’ we see the characters behaving as if they’re in a black-out. This very funny farce by Peter Shaffer is hilarious as the characters invent all sorts of excuses why the room must be kept in ‘darkness’. Characters Carol and Brindsley, an engaged couple, have invited a German millionaire to see Brindsley's sculpture, and to impress him have ‘borrowed’ antiques from a neighbour. Throw in Carol's formidable military father, an ex-girlfriend, a German electrician and other eccentric characters and mayhem ensues. BHANGRA NIGHT Fancy something a little different?

RSVP is the festival favourite bhangra band, and have played alongside top names at Glastonbury, WOMAD and Bath. Their music’s entertaining, unique, very catchy and will instantly create a great party atmosphere.

THE LITTLE STRANGER Join author Sarah Waters as she discusses one of her latest novels The Little Stranger as part of the Stamford Festival Of Ghosts. Sarah has had a number of award-winning Victorian novels, of which two went straight to number one in the bestseller chart.

The Little Stranger remains set in the 1940s, in rural Warwickshire where a crumbling country manor house is haunted, but is it haunted by something more sinister than first thought? STUNNING DANCE @ THE STAHL The C-12 Dance Theatre presents an emotionally charged double bill of danceinspired theatre, which has captured audiences since the premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Enough features a female duet who are struggling to deal with suppressed desire, and the title piece – The Chair – tells the story of a man who’s forced to face his past. JOE BROWN LIVE IN SPALDING One of the best guitar players around will be coming to Spalding to show off his talent with a stomping rock ‘n’ roll show. Derek Martin, best known for playing Charlie Slater on BBC’s Eastenders is coming to Waterstones, Bridge Street on November 14 from 1.30pm 2.30pm to sign copies of his new autobiography, An East End Life: My Story. Born in Bow, he grew up with some of the area’s well known characters such as the Kray twins, and his life off screen has been even more colourful than that on screen – he apparently first decided to become an actor after he was acquitted of a charge of receiving and larceny at the Old Bailey!

CHARITY GIG AND GROOVES @ RADIUS Loads of local bands and DJs are getting together on November 12 at Radius, Northminster, to help raise funds to build a Young People’s Enterprise Centre in Peterborough covering genres from R‘n’B to house, techno to rock. Acts booked to appear include local

Firstly though, Queensgate gets the festivities started with the launch of the centre’s gorgeous decorations and lights on Thursday November 4.

The entertainment starts at 5pm hosted by Kev Lawrence from Heart who’ll be joined by Face of ESP Lauren Hughes, Sportacus an Stephanie from Lazy Town, characters from the Key Theatre’s panto Jack & The Beanstalk and of course Santa himself, to switch on the lights.

Santa’s grotto will then be opened and then Santa will be there every day through until Christmas Eve. This month the centre’s open until 6pm during the week and late night opening begins weekdays from November 29 when the centre’s open until 9pm and there’s free parking from 5.30pm through until December 23.

Over at Serpentine Green the shopping centre at Hampton gets its festivities started when Santa’s Grotto is opened at 1pm on Saturday November 20. The decorations will be up along with a huge Christmas tree and the kiddies can get to meet Fifi and the Flowertots at intervals from 11am-4pm.

In Stamford the town council light switch on is on Friday November 26 with entertainment from around 4.30pm – 6pm and the light switch on by the Mayor at around 5pm in Red Lion Square. There’ll also be carol singing and the regular market will have a festive feel.

The Stamford Christmas Festival organised by the Stamford Town Partnership is on Sunday December 12 from 10am – 4pm. This will see over 100 exhibitor and trade stalls, selling everything from festive food to Christmas crafts all along Broad Street, Ironmonger Street, High Street and Red Lion Square.

JOIN ESP @ FIREWORK FIESTA The biggest firework display in the area is set to go bang on Saturday November 6 and the ESP girls will be there to join in the fun… and dish out some goody bags too!

Firework Fiesta at Ferry Meadows is East Anglia's largest firework display and one of the top ten in the UK, sponsored by Serpentine Green shopping centre.

In the largest display yet by the Firework Fiesta team a £20,000 show will light up the skies in a spectacular display lasting almost 25 minutes watched by around 15 to 20,000 spectators.

Spokesman Tony Cronin told ESP – “This is the only professional display of its kind in Peterborough and has been widely acclaimed as a spectacular show and one which the people of Peterborough can be very proud of.

“Almost £310,000 has been raised for Peterborough charities, with all the money raised going back into the community to help disadvantaged individuals and groups pf people in the Peterborough area.”

A fabulous Festive Fashion Show in Cathedral Square on November 20 will see ESP’s models showcase some of the best new trends available at Westgate Department Store. “In all honesty I didn’t feel I had blown it. I focused on just being me throughout the whole evening and as I got through to the higher stages I actually became more relaxed.”

Describe how you felt when your name was announced as winner: “Shocked! I remember thinking: ‘Oh my God they’ve just called my name, this is actually me! Now do I get up or say something? What should I do next?!’ I didn’t expect to win but after a few minutes I got all excited as I knew I’d be doing so much representing ESP.”

“Yes and some of us are friends on Facebook. But it’s hard to keep in touch, as everyone has different lifestyles so it’s nice when I walk past people I met on the night in the street or around town and we smile and say Hi.”

“All of them! When I got home after the finals night I had a look at the list of all the prizes and was so shocked but amazed at how much I had won. I’m really looking forward to getting my teeth whitened and the shopping trips, which means I can buy more shoes!”

So what’s there to know about our lovely new Face of ESP Lauren Hughes? This gorgeous sporty 20 yearold has a certain passion… the photo says it all doesn’t it?!

What does it feel like having been on the front cover?

“I would just like to thank everyone for voting for me and that I hope I can make you all proud.”

What made you enter?

“I wanted to be the Face of ESP and have people recognise me but I also wanted to represent the magazine, to be a good ambassador for Peterborough and the surrounding areas. I also wanted to have all the fun that the winners previously had; going to balls, taking part in charity events and lots of other worthwhile experiences.”

Have you any ambitions you'd like to realise while in the role?

“I’d love to go on a rally course. I love driving and would love to experience being in control of a car at those speeds. I’d also love to try skydiving. It’s something I’d never normally do being scared of heights, but I think it would still be an amazing thing to do.”

Tell me about your hobbies?

“I’ve always loved sports and played football for Yaxley Ladies until they folded in 2009. The girls were

Do you have any special skills?

“I guess my special skill would be shopping for shoes?! I have over 80 pairs! When it comes to shoes I know what I’m looking for and what I need to match any outfit or to just match my mood at that time. My family hasn’t room to put their shoes anywhere now!

My shoes have taken over my room, the downstairs cupboards and the spare room. I’m also hiding pairs because my parents get frustrated every time I buy a pair.”

What career aspirations do you have?

“I’m studying childcare but unsure what direction to take as there are so many options. I feel very strongly towards child protection and children who need someone to speak up for them, which is why I’m heading more towards becoming a social worker or working within this sector.”

BACON SARNIE THE HARLEY’S WAY I’ve found the perfect bacon sarnie and they serve it at Harley’s Diner in Market Deeping.

Although the name would lead you to believe this is a biker-infested eatery, don’t worry it’s not.

Harley’s is a family-friendly diner offering all-day breakfasts including American classics such as French toast and breakfast burritos. Head chef Tom Griffiths (pictured) uses fresh produce and even makes his own French fries and chips.

Desserts are damn good and there’s a mouthwatering selection including bourbon pecan pie, brownies, Oreo cookie cheesecake and a large array of proper ice cream.

MY GREAT EASTERN PROMISE Here I am pictured – a man among giants. And giants they were too. My Great Eastern Run buddies Petch and Jon completed the city’s annual half marathon in less than 1 hour 45 minutes. Sterling work. They trained for this target and achieved it.

I was on course to do the same before I hit ‘the wall’ at nine miles and just had enough left in the tank to walk the last four miles. It was the longest, loneliest walk of my life. I’ve never stopped in a race before.

What makes you laugh?

“I love playing practical jokes on friends. The best time was when we had one of our friends’ college work on us, she was looking everywhere for it until we put it back in her folder and she told us it was there all along and must have missed it. That was such a funny day purely because she didn’t even think we were the culprits. We did let her know and we still laugh about it now.”

My Man About Town sponsors were amazed by the number of motorcyclists (and one Vespa rider) who turned out to see their fabulous showroom. The ESP girls were there and there were nonstop test rides on new BMWs and plenty of exhibitors for everyone to have a browse at.

It was a difficult time for me but in truth I was never mentally prepared or fit enough to compete this year. If I can overcome a stubborn injury I’ll be back in 2011 challenging my personal best of 1.47.

Thanks to Petch for continuously pushing me in training and to Gary for our customary warm-up. And well done to the City Council, sponsors, runners, spectators and volunteers who once again made it a fantastic event.

The only thing I wish I could change was the fact we lost two lives on the day. May they both rest in peace.

Being the kind and caring person that I am (modest, I know) I decided to offer my help on a charity mission to India.

Curry anyone?

The purpose of the trip was to help those less fortunate than me, work with some orphans and Dalit people, and to have my eyes opened to another way of life.

“Meet back, one hour from now.”

The poverty and suffering I'd heard about sounded terrible and were hard to come to terms with in the flesh – but having the chance to play a part in improving things and to make a difference was something I'd really wanted to do, and I can now say it's been one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

And off she went, practically sprinting like a pro. I’d just mastered walking in my sari and off she went like a Cheetah in the night. She was actually a ‘cheater’ in the night I thought.

I was stranded in a place far and beyond, didn’t know how to get back, mobile was off and left in my bag (roaming charges undeniably extortionate) and my guide had vanished!

In true Susan style though (I’ve been sheltered by the Western ways for a tad too long!) I put clothes shopping quite high up on my priority list when preparing for this trip. I needed some clothes that would shield me from the humid weather, protect me from mosquito bites and also make me look like one of the ‘locals’. The perfect solution I thought was to buy a couple of saris and long dresses. A couple, turned into six but my thought process was thus; if I was going on a beach holiday I’d wear various bikinis so as I was going to India I should wear a variety of sari-type attire. Little did I realise then just how much fashion would pale into insignificance when I was out there…

So, day four and the start to my charity work had gone exceptionally well. I’d entertained children from an orphanage, avoided death many times when cows stopped the traffic (we didn’t have seatbelts) and reduced my food intake to avoid having to use the blocked, long drop loo!

We had two hours of free time, which we were advised to use wisely (i.e. sleep) because we had one of the most challenging days of the trip so far ahead – a medical mission. Instead of sleeping, I took the ‘use wisely’ advice and interpreted it into ‘do shopping’. One of the girls from the village that we were staying in, Suchita, offered to be my guide at one of the local markets. She obviously shared my love of shopping I thought. Shared my love of shopping?

Suchita had other ideas and instead, used the opportunity to get out (I later found out) to meet her secret boyfriend.

“Meet here in an hour,” Suchita informed me the minute we arrived.

“Huhh?” I mused as if I’d just been told to recite my 18 times tables.

“But why? Where are you going?”

“Must go.”

I decided to cover more of my face with my headscarf so I wouldn’t look too foreign, therefore less vulnerable and took each amazing market stall in my stride. I only made it to the 15th stall marvelling at the crafts and that was my hour up, which wasn’t as scary as I first thought (everyone was very friendly) and headed back for dinner.

I decided to stick to what I knew (it was the first night eating with one of the families) and so went for one of my favourites, chicken curry. Or that is what I’d thought. This was NOT the curry I knew, this was some spicier than spicy concoction of spiciness. To avoid spitting it out, I tried to wash it down with some chai. Uh oh. Even the chai was spicy!

Two things quickly raced through my head. If I spat it out, I’d be surely thrown out into the wilderness for my rudeness – but if I made a run for the door to “excccooooose” myself (the way that I’d pronounce it with a mouthful of edible lava) to the toilet, I’d be ok.

As a child I was always told to walk rather than run. Sound advice I thought as my back foot caught on the edge of the beautiful woven carpet… Needless to say the family and everyone laughed, including Suchita, as I peeled myself from off the floor. Judas!

I was always expecting my charity work in India to be a challenging experience and it was. Not only did I meet some really amazing people, we did some fantastic work and changed lives and circumstances for the better.

It was undeniably one of the best and most enriching experiences of my life. I may have made a dufus of myself at times but hey, if that's all I’ve got to worry about, I count myself lucky!

Petra Johnson was born and bred in Stamford and has been in the hairdressing trade for 35 years. “I reckon I’m as established as some of the oldest buildings in town,” says Pet. “For example my lovely holiday home Burghley House!” Petra’s salon is situated on Broad Street in a wonderful 14th Century building which provides a great environment to work in with a delightful courtyard which she shares with her daughter and son-in-law’s business the Bakehouse Kitchens studio. She’s a mother of two beautiful girls, Jazmin and Sade and a nana to three grandkids. “I’m a true believer in ‘women rule the world’ and I feel I’ve done my bit!”

What’s your favourite thing about Stamford?

“If I had to be honest it’s the people.

Although they can be a funny breed, I seem to get along with them OK! Obviously the town itself is so picturesque with the old stone buildings. I would defy anyone to find fault with my town – need I say more?”

What’s your favourite thing about the hairdressing business?

“As well as being my area for creativity, it’s the people around me on a day to day basis that give me a multitude of great times. Having fantastic staff and such interesting clients every day is totally different. It’s a great source for everyday human interaction. Changing someone’s outlook on life can start with a haircut for sure. The pleasure I get from seeing happy faces and them feeling great far outweighs material gain. You would think after 35 years in this trade my passion for it may have depleted but it only keeps getting better, especially now I’m also a NLP practitioner (Neuro Linguistic Programmer).”

Which celeb has the best hairstyle?

“In my opinion anyone who sets a trend is valuable to the world of hair and fashion. The greatest being Posh & Becks for team effort. My personal favourite is myself (LOL!) Only at the moment Florence Welch with her vibrant red hair is taking the country by storm. Let’s paint the town red!”

Where is your favourite place to go out in Stamford?

“Everywhere in Stamford is a

pleasure and I have different pubs for different experiences.

The Lord Burghley I call the ‘Office’ as it’s close to business and most decisions can be made over a lovely glass of Bacardi and Coke and a good laugh. The more serious ones are made in the privacy of my own head! (In the toilet!) For the more upbeat moments the Pear Tree offers me live music or my favourite DJ Steve McGurk. I only give it a miss if Matt Zilch is playing!” …Whatever Pet! What’s the strangest hairstyle/haircut you’ve ever been asked to do?

“I have two favourites and they’re the ones that challenged me the most. Being asked to create a style for a party with a Footballers Wives TV series theme. To me the hair had to make a statement.

So I used Stamford market’s flower stall outside our shop as my inspiration. I created a flower display using the hair entwined and interwoven through exotic flowers and leaves. The result was AWESOME! I’m always loving my clients bringing in a photo or cut out image to replicate but I was bemused when a young man brought in a picture of a cartoon character from Japan. Replicate it I did and his stunning ginger hair made it look amazing!”

BONFIRE AND FIREWORK SPECTACULAR So, are you getting excited about fireworks night? The Stamford and District Kiwanis are staging the annual Stamford Bonfire And Firework display at Stamford Queen Eleanor School, Green Lane on Saturday November 6. It’s the largest organised event in the Stamford area so should be good!

The gates open at 5pm and the bonfire’s lit at 6pm followed by the traditional firework display. There’s free parking, hot food and fairground rides from 5pm.

The Stamford Kiwanis area good hearted bunch and have been running charity events since 1977 to raise funds to support those in real need in Stamford and the surrounding areas. Funds are distributed only to deserving local charities and good causes. Events organised by Kiwanis include the Stamford Festival Parade of Floats, the Stamford Bonfire And Fireworks Night and Father Christmas on his sleigh, raising some £10-15,000 each year.

Lancôme’s international make-up artist Benjamin Rousseau recently came for his annual make-over session at John Lewis and Face of ESP, Lauren Hughes, was lucky enough to be invited along.

Benjamin in association with Lancôme does the make-up for the BAFTAs and has worked with many celebs over the years including Kate Winslet, Gemma Arterton and Sharon Stone. He has a unique way of applying make-up – he streaks it on like war paint before blending it using several brushes – he says this is because he actually started out as an artist.

He believes that make-up should reflect your mood and personality but that we shouldn’t make the mistake of overdoing it. It should simply highlight your best features, especially when it comes to everyday make-up. Having a good skincare regime is also one of Benjamin’s top tips, as having well-kept, moisturised skin means it’s the perfect base for foundation and will give you a flawless, smooth finish. If you’re lucky enough to have skin as good as Lauren’s though then make-up will just be an accessory.

Lauren really enjoyed her time with Benjamin and learnt a lot along the way too. She said – “I loved it. You could really talk to him and he had some great tips. It’s not a look I would’ve put together but it’s great. I was surprised he mixed eyeshadow with a clear lipgloss to create the colour he wanted, and used mascara on my eyebrows! I’ll certainly take his advice and experiment more.”

A LOOK BACK AT THE BEER FEST! Blimey – we’ve been so busy what with the Face of ESP and loads of other events that we’re only just able to include the fruits of our labours at the Peterborough Beer Festival. It’s honestly because we’ve had a lot of other pics to include… not that we’ve only just recovered from the hangover of course… Hic! Now that the dark nights are here it’s great to say a final farewell to the summer and look back at the city’s big social event of the season. If you were there and beat the rain to get to the bar you will have been among the 31,567 who went along this year. It’s amazing to think that 95,412 pints of real ale were supped and the atmosphere and live music from the likes of The League Of Mentalmen was as good as ever. Here’s just a few of you snapped by our Paparazzi team with Mike Harris the man behind the lens (not propping up the bar – honest!)

We know the new layout had one or two teething problems but with rain like that it proved they needed to make some changes in order to prevent their heavy vehicles used to build the site from turning it into a mud bath!

Anyway, we’re sure there’ll be a bit of tweaking next year but the Beer Fest remains one of ESP’s favourite events of the year and looking at these photos we reckon you had a damn good time too!

The Crazy Chick is back and she’s gone Back To Scratch – after years of silence Charlotte Church returns with a new album and some words of wisdom…

“I feel like I've grown, I've got something to say, I've had a bit more life experience and I just have to sing again,” says a grown up Charlotte Church. “Cause for me, from when I was young, that is all it has been about. I'm a singer, through and through.”

The Welsh singer’s been a star since she was 11 years old, exploding in the world's consciousness with the number one album Voice Of An Angel in 1998. She captured hearts everywhere she went, was garlanded with awards (including a Classical Brit), released five original studio albums and sold over ten million worldwide.

In 2006, still just 20 years-old, Charlotte decided to take a break from music. Not that she disappeared altogether. She hosted various television shows, including her own, and has been a near permanent fixture in Britain's gossip press, endlessly speculating about her love life and appearance. Meanwhile, she’s been doing her best to ignore it all and enjoy the quiet life in rural Wales with the two young children she has with Welsh rugby player Gavin Henson, Ruby, now 3, and Dexter, 2.

Desperate to return to her first love though, she started the process of writing songs for a new album last year. “It's been a bit of a journey,” she says. “I kind of just had to throw myself in and start writing with different people and see what came out. I really wanted to write for my range, to be able to show that off, because it’s quite rare to

find songs that will span three or four octaves. I suppose because of my classical days, I've got a reasonable amount of musical knowledge and understanding, I can read music and play piano.

The biggest difference is feelings I have, things I need to express.”

New songs include The Story Of Us, which she wrote about her mother. “She's brilliant, I love her to bits, but she takes a lot of care and affection. The song is kind of sad. She cries every time she hears it.”

The album’s title track, Back To Scratch, is a big, feisty pop song about the emotional detritus of a romantic break up. “I've got to be careful what I write, ’cause I wrote my future in that song,” she says.

It was originally inspired by problems her aunt was going through but by the time she came to record it, Charlotte's own long term relationship had broken up. “It became the perfect song for my situation, so I sing it with a lot of conviction. Gavin's been a massive part of my life, so it is definitely reflected in the music. You have to draw from stuff like that, to try and bring a positive out of it. I think people will hear that it's real. It might not have come out of the happiest times, but this album's got real heart.”

Charlotte's excitement about her return is palpable. “I'm so proud of this album, it’s been completely organic and honest and real. I can't wait to get it out there and remind people that I'm not a TV personality, I'm not some celebrity who’s just famous for being famous, I'm not some lager lout chav who sells papers. I'm a singer. And I'm good at it.”

Back To Scratch is released November 1.

IT’S RAINING MEN The world premiere production of Raining Men hits Peterborough this autumn, and marks the return to the stage of the Key Theatre’s artistic director Michael Cross.

Always a firm favourite with Peterborough audiences there was great disappointment when Michael Cross announced he’d no longer be playing his usual role of the dame in the Key’s annual panto – something he’d firmly made his mark on over the years! It’s fantastic to hear he’s now decided to perform again in this great new show.

Described as ‘the Full Monty meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, Raining Men sounds a scream and teams Michael with Patrick Kearns (who’s stepped into his high heels in the panto) and Andrew Ryan.

They play characters Phil, Doug and Colin who all work together in a nightclub. When they realise there’s no act booked to perform on Halloween they decide there’s nothing else for it but to do it themselves! Expect tunes from Shirley Bassey, Barbara Streisand and Judy Garland as the boys drag it up in style.

We're very excited to see you back on stage – what's prompted your return to the spotlight?

“Thank you – basically I read this new play and thought – ‘that part is just me’. Fortunately the producers agreed! It’s always good to go back to the roots of what it is you do and remind yourself why you wanted to work in the theatre in the first place!”

What are you enjoying most about this role?

“I love to make people laugh – the play has some great one-liners – when it’s going well it’s great therapy for cast and audience alike!”

What's Raining Men all about and who will enjoy this show the most?

“Three guys work in a night club. A Halloween cabaret has been arranged and due to a problem getting an act the guys decide to do it themselves… before they realise that it’s not as easy as it looks!

“The play will appeal particularly to women – hen nights and girls night out groups will really enjoy the humour and glamour – but guys do love it too.

But it is strictly adults only with strong language throughout.”

Will you be going on tour with the show?

“The show opened in Chesterfield and recently played the Central Theatre in Chatham. There are no immediate plans for more dates but who knows?”

Is it extra special for you to perform in front of a Peterborough audience?

“Oh yes. The home crowd will terrify me but playing to audiences that know your work is always special and I really hope that we’ll get lots of support.”

Are we likely to see you return to the stage again?

“I never say never! Initially though this really was a one-off trip down memory lane, but I have enjoyed going out there again and so perhaps when good roles come along I’ll always be tempted!”

VIVA ITALIA! The second Italian Festival in Peterborough was a big success and it’s now hoped it’ll become an annual event… although it may well move to a warmer time of year!

ESP’s Mike Harris was there to capture the action and of course our Man About Town Pep Cipriano dropped by to drool over the Ferraris and Ducati bikes! A city council spokesman told ESP – “It’s our intention to continue to work in partnership with the Italian Community Association to host this event annually. Next year we’re looking to move it to June or July to attract the winemakers from Italy.”

Several thousand people attended the event throughout the day in Peterborough city centre.

Highlights included the Italian flag throwers who marched from The Bull Hotel on Westgate to perform on Cathedral Square and Aldo Maglietta with the Euro Quartet featuring the tenor Angelo De Maio from Italy. There was also a stunning hair show by Image International from Spalding and Hair Xclusive in Thorpe Wood and the day of Italian themed entertainment had a big firework finale.

Tel: 01780 763136 Don’t be fooled into thinking that the Crown Hotel in Stamford is just for weekend visitors who need a central overnight location. This is a seriously popular drinking and eating destination as well.

On a recent Saturday evening visit, we found the bar to be buzzing and lively; it’s light and welcoming, but was only the start of what turned out to be a totally successful dining experience.

Through to the adjacent bright and colourful restaurant area, there’s none of your standard pub grub here. Starters that appealed to us were delicious hot goat’s cheese with a fruity chutney, a trio of fish and Hoisin duck. On to mains – it was perfectly cooked and oh-so-tasty rib eye steak and pork medallions. Sorry – can’t comment on the dessert as we were all too full. And it has to be said that the waiting staff managed to attain that difficult-to-achieve balance of excellent service with a sense of humour.

Would we return? Absolutely, it was all just like that big road not far away – A1!

The Boathouse… a place where the entire Peterborough population flock for a pint in the sun.

Most of us have planned a Saturday afternoon drink here at some point over the summer months, but that’s not all The Boathouse on Thorpe Road should be celebrated for. The inside has a lot of character about it, and offers a warm homely welcome in the winter months too (especially the sofa area which is usually taken when I’m there!).

During my latest visit, despite the new meals on offer I couldn’t help but be my typical self and order the same thing I do every time I’m at The Boathouse. Yes, I would recommend their Sunday roast to anybody who loves this classic weekend dish. I always find the meat to be cooked just right and the chef is generous with the portion size.

So, definitely something for everyone! I guess what I’m saying is, The Boathouse is for life, not just for summer.

Congrats go out to the Stamford Kebab and Pizza House for gaining a five star food hygiene award. South Kesteven District Council’s given the take-away the maximum in its ‘Scores on the Doors’ hygiene ratings after making major improvements.

Run by chef and owner Imtiaz Azam, The Stamford Kebab and Pizza House in Red Lion Street, Stamford, is the first kebab house in the district to receive the full five stars, and has managed it after year on year improvements since 2005.

Christian Polzin of SKDC’s healthy communities team said – “Since his early poor ratings he’s done a food hygiene course and has also undertaken the Safer Food, better business coaching previously offered by SKDC. He also had a large refurbishment in the summer of 2010, but although the structure does make up an element of the star rating he now appreciates that key areas are safe practices and careful consideration as to how food is stored, prepared, cooked and served safely.”

Imtiaz Azam says he’s delighted – “I’m very happy and proud to be the first kebab house in South Kesteven to get a five star food hygiene rating.

“We’ve worked hard over the last four years to get to this point and I hope that it’ll have a positive impact on our business.”

“After winning I went shopping with ESP’s style guru and image consultant Sue Donnelly to find an outfit for the cover shoot the following day,” says Lauren as she beams enthusiastically when asked what she’s been up to so far.

“I then did an interview for BBC Radio Cambridgeshire on the Monday and the next night Pep and I went to the re-launch of Flamas restaurant in Hampton where the food was lovely.”

“The following day after the meal at Flamas I was out again at the Beauty Begins beauty promotion night at John Lewis where I had a great night getting loads of beauty advice and goodies. I also attended the Sex And The City 2 movie night event at Voyager school’s community cinema in Walton which was all about being glam and enjoying the movie!

Oh, and I went to the opening of the new Bedeck bedding store at the Van Hage Garden Centre and I’ve also had my make-up done by one of Lancôme’s top make-up artists – Benjamin Rousseau!”

Lauren will have to make appearances at all kinds of events as she spreads the word about ESP and says they’ve already proved quite diverse – “There was the Balderston BMW open weekend where I got to sit on a very nice bike and pose with my shades on and then the Swish clothes swap for Deafblind UK. It’s been such a fantastic start!”

SAFE SEX-FACTOR Top boy band JLS, featuring Peterborough’s very own Aston Merrygold, have this month released their new single Love You More and not only is it a sure fire hit but it’s also this year’s official charity single for the BBC’s Children In Need Appeal. I’m all for the boys doing their bit for charity, and let’s face it, it’s bound to be huge and raise lots of money, but I can’t help thinking that they’ve already done more than their bit for that cause – by launching their range of condoms they’ve made sure that there are a few less children in the world, in need or not.

Not only does that sound well dodgy but I can’t believe it to be true; after all, if you do score, where exactly do you put their number?!

I once met the gorgeous Bruce Reih ana (Northampton Saints winger) in a sauna in a local gym (yes, I do go occasionally!) and, maybe because I was bright red in the face, my hair was plastered to my forehead and I was sweating like a serial cheat awaiting a DNA test on the Jeremy Kyle show, I most definitely didn’t pull. All I can remember is goin g even redder than the steam had already made me, and wishing I had a bigger towel!

BEAT THE BANGER Much as I love the Apprentice and V Plus it each week so I can watch them make idiots of themselves over again, I can’t get used to Lord Sugar being Lord Sugar. I’m sure he more than deserves his peerage but it just seems so wrong that S’ralan no longer exists. Whilst you read this why not grab a pint and have a chill for a bit? I am talking a pint of H2O – life-giving water as we know it. You’re probably like many other people who don’t drink enough of it and yet it serves more than just to satisfy your thirst.

So many excuses not to drink water and yet we’re made up of around 70% water particularly in our brains. Good health can never be reached without a good supply of it on a daily basis.

We need it for the function of all our cells and importantly to help digest our foods and clear away our waste products. Our brain needs a constant supply of water and if you’re dehydrated then some of the symptoms you may experience quite quickly could be – Fatigue Irritability Constant hunger Headaches Lack of concentration… and much more Longer term dehydration (which is very common) can age you more quickly. You’ll start to see other signs such as – Dry skin/wrinkled skin Skin and muscles losing elasticity Joint stiffness pain Muscle pain/fatigue Constipation... and much more

introducing more fluid that way. So, as always, how much one person needs can vary to another but as a general rule, which I tend to stick to, is to – – Take your weight in pounds (i.e. 140lbs which is 10 stone) – Divide that by 2 (which would be 70) – The total is then the number in ounces of water per day (so that would suggest about 70 fluid ounces per day – roughly 2 litres per day) However, if you’re also guzzling down lots of coffee, tea, fizzy drinks, alcohol, then you’ll find that these can accelerate fluid losses so you may need to a) reduce these types of drinks each day and b) add in extra water to replace the loss to help your fluid balance.

Of course you have to also think about exercise and fluid loss through sweating which may mean you need extra, or losses through sickness/vomiting etc.

“Our brains need a constant supply of water...” as landfill is being loaded up with water bottles and the safety of plastic bottled water is under scrutiny due to the chemicals in the plastic. Therefore a good filter for home or office use is probably the best option right now.

Before I leave this topic, let’s also be realistic – guzzling pints and pints of water is not a good idea.

We’re not fish – you do not need to over-do it.

This then got the biggest round of applause of the night and quite a few wolf howls as well, which prompted Russ to add – “You can tell this is Martin's home crowd!”

And there was a happy ending to the story for Adrian too because two weeks later he played Phil Taylor in the semi-finals of the Darts Grand prix in Dublin and beat him.

Wolfie's words of wisdom obviously had an effect.

WOLFIE RIGHT ON Q

On the night it was fantastic to see so many people from the citiy’s local darts team attend and give Wolfie such a great reception. There was a brilliant atmosphere throughout, helped by the shaven-headed, and gravel-voiced darts MC Russ Bray, a familiar face from Sky Sports who sounds like he's gargling razor blades when he shouts “One hundred and eighty!”

After the darts had finished I was just about to head off until Wolfie said – “Where are you going? It's not over yet, we're doing a question and answer session next.”

Now, having interviewed Wolfie numerous times over the years I thought I'd heard all the stories he had to tell, but nothing prepared me for the Q&A session. He, Adrian and Russ all took questions from the floor and I don't think I've laughed so much on a night out in Peterborough since Harry Hill came here in 2005.

The banter between the three of them was incredible. Adrian as a scouser had a funny line for everything, Russ was delivering deadpan put-downs every time anyone shouted anything out, and Wolfie's stories are a cross between Al Murray and Gordon Ramsay.

It was great to see our local darts legend Martin 'Wolfie' Adams in the city recently. The reigning World Champion and England captain took part in an exhibition match at Riley's Q Club in Cowgate with Adrian 'Jackpot' Lewis. Riley's have recently refurbished all their venues across the country and as part of the revamp have been putting on a series of exhibition matches with professional players. Manager, Tanis Johnson (pictured) runs a brilliant club and the dart, pool and snooker facilities they've got are second to none. If you've not been in there recently and fancy a game, it's definitely worth a visit.

You both know Phil Taylor's gonna do this stuff and you still let him? He never tries any of that when I've played him, and that's because he knows it won't wash with me!”

Denzel Washington and Tony Scott (The Taking of Pelham 123) continue their moviefetish for locomotive-based thrillers, as Washington tries to stop a runaway train loaded with toxic chemicals decimating an entire town – aided by Star Trek’s latest Captain Kirk, Chris Pine.

The cult trailer from Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror has spawned a feature-length movie featuring Danny Trejo (Desperado) as the deadly title character – supported by Robert De Niro and Jessica Alba – in this shamelessly violent flick which leaves tongue firmly embedded in cheek.

This is the game Formula One fans have been clamouring for – and Codemasters doesn’t let them down.

It’s only fair to judge this first-person shooter in its own right – ignoring the now ditched ability to play as the Taliban in the game’s very decent multiplayer section – as American special operatives go to war in Afghanistan.

The single player campaign is suitably gritty as EA does a notable job in re-igniting the campaign – but it sadly pales against similar more established genre definers. But FPS enthusiasts shouldn’t rule this out as it still boasts some standout moments – but in medal terms it's more bronze than gold.

Take on the best the sport has to offer, including Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, as superb visuals, excellent career mode and a plethora of realistic tracks brings F1 to life – despite a few racing flaws that need to be ironed out for the next version.

NBA 2K11 (X360/PS3/WII/PSP/PC) Out now Despite some strong competition from EA – their version has been pushed back until January – this is without doubt king when it comes to the NBA. And talking of king, the addition of arguably the greatest player of all-time in Michael Jordan – in which you can replicate some of his biggest games – is the icing on the cake of a game which is nigh on perfect.

This is without doubt the best incarnation for some time, and when you throw in the exceptional dynamic weather system, this is the closest thing to being there.

With improved dribbling controls and deeper career mode this even betters last year’s exceptional effort – and delivers a thundering slam dunk.

SOCCER 2011 (PS3/X360/WII/PSP/PC) Out now I’m a PES man and always will be – and this year sees the biggest wholesale changes in some time.

Fortunately the changes are for the better (even though they take a little time getting used to) as a new 360 passing and power gauge system makes it a more complete game.

An overhauled tactics system and far improved presentation undoubtedly makes it the best version since PES 6 – as it claws back serious ground on FIFA.

LORDS OF SHADOW

It’s clear that FIFA is the people’s choice – and I’ve had many friends convert from PES.

I’ve been a fan of the franchise since playing IV on the SNES some eighteen years ago – and this new re-imagining comes hugely recommended.

I have no gripes with that, as it’s arguably the more refined game – particularly with the more official license polish – and you know exactly what you’re getting.

This year’s version has a few gameplay and graphical tweaks that again slightly improve the formula – but FIFA fans don’t need convincing. Choose your side.

(X360/PS3/PC) Out now This game tries to do something different with a third-person shooter – but ultimately feels a few years out of date.

It suffers from comparison with a plethora of recent similar games (God Of War, Dante’s Inferno etc) but its core mechanics, production values and lengthy campaign are of an extremely high standard.

The script isn’t great and there are a few minor annoyances but this atmospheric adventure is well worth getting your teeth into.

Mech-heads will love using the hulking human-controlled war machine, the Wanzer, but when the novelty wears off and repetitiveness kicks in, it kind of falls a little flat.

This skews that thin line between whether this could have been expensive downloadable content compared to a full game – and just about falls into the latter. This bright and colourful game is a worthy companion to the Cartoon Network series as Batman teams up with the likes of Robin and Hawkman in this simplistic side-scroller.

It does have a few stand-out intense battle moments, but sadly this isn’t quite evolution, despite some decent ideas trying to break out.

Some noteworthy special moves ignite the extremely repetitive gameplay, but this will only really appeal to the TV demographic.

The History Channel dips their proverbial toe into the gaming world with this accessible real-time strategy – that just lacks a bit of depth.

It would be unfair to compare it to PC genre-definers such as Total War which is a more complete game, but with more than seventy medieval battles from the Hundred Years War, this is about as detailed as it gets on a next-gen console.

Ultimately this is a chivalrous effort that RTS fans should check out.

This captivating action game will undoubtedly be one of the dark horses for your hard-earned cash over the coming months.

Role-playing masters Square Enix go old-school with this stylish take on the successful franchise.

Not everyone can afford to splash out on full-price games so it would only be fair to point out one of the better downloadable offerings.

It doesn’t break any boundaries, but with effective mechanics that do exactly what it says on the tin it proves to be engrossing fare as you and three heroes attempt to rescue the king’s daughter.

The simple platforming cel-shaded world of Atari’s Blade Kitten harks back to 16-bit days as you battle as bounty hunter Kit in this anime-influenced world.

It is undoubtedly one of the best of its ilk on any handheld – and is charming to boot.

It may not be a Shadow Complex beater on XBLA, but this engaging game shows the growing quality available.

The basic mechanics sometimes don’t go beyond simple platforming and button-mashing, but the overall presentation is exceptional as you play as brutish Monkey, who becomes bonded with tech-savvy girl Trip to escape captors 150 years in the future. Hugely entertaining fare, that oozes quality production values.

After spending the summer in a multitude of fields and marquees Andy is firmly planted back in the area and is continuing his conversations with local musicians to find out more about their life and times in the music business…

As with many musicians Murray’s venture into the world of rock ‘n’ roll was maybe down to his older brother who handed him a Led Zeppelin album and suggested he listened to it. “It was like nothing I had heard,” he tells me, “I wanted to be part of that thing, that vibe.”

So with Steve his brother at his side they toured Britain extensively throughout the 80s and 90s under the Hockridge Brothers and Cage stage names, they even cut a dance track under the name Mo N Beev which was well accepted in some circles. He also toured in bands like Force Four and Future Shock at which Murray winces visibly… not at the band but the names… every musician does it Murray, you’re not alone!

He’s the first to admit also that they were never the luckiest of bands when it came to being signed, a lot of near misses as he delicately puts it. “There was one gig at the Rock Garden where the guy who signed Terence Trent Darby was coming to see us and was very interested, I broke my leg a while before so had to play with my leg in plaster on crutches… it didn’t go too well.”

Murray’s other current project is the collaboration with Rex Gates and Lloyd Watson in which all three take turns to sing a song of their choice. Often unrehearsed and unplanned arrangements of Ray Charles, Curtis Mayfield, Robert Johnson and Bob Dylan ensue. As Lloyd said to me in the break between sets recently – “It’s magic Andy, something magical is happening there.” And you know what?

He’s right; no two gigs are the same, there are variances on each song at each gig. All three have the licence to vibe-out the way they want with Murray driving the groove-on drums. It really is special.

No article about Murray can finish without a mention of his voice, yes he’s a great drummer and is quickly becoming a very good self taught guitarist. Yes he’s an intelligent producer and arranger who can also lay down decent keyboard but his voice is something else. Beautifully soulful, strong and with a range to die for, live and up close he’s quite mesmerising when he sings. If you haven’t seen him sing you’re missing out on one of the greats, maybe a kickback to his father who had the most amazing baritone voice.

When most people talk about making it in the business they reckon if you haven’t made it in your twenties you’re too late. Don’t you believe it – Murray Hockridge is on a journey that may just be entering its most fruitful period.

“There was always music in the house when we were kids,” says Murray who’s immensely proud of his family heritage. With his brother Steve and Kevin Murphy (now with The Malingerers) one of his first projects was a blues band which he took to the Scotgate Inn in Stamford, and as three fresh faced teenagers, blew away a hard-nosed bunch of middle aged blues fans – “We were only kids really but they loved it.”

The future however is looking good after a fated encounter at a Costa’s coffee shop in Milton Keynes where Murray was busking. He met up with Dave Killminster who’d just finished a massive tour with the remnants of Pink Floyd – “He actually came over and said he liked my stuff and bought a CD. We swapped details and it went from there really.” An album of covers will be out soon but not done in a normal sort of way. “We’ve taken some songs, stripped them down and put our spin on them, they really are different. I knock out the rhythm and sing which leaves Dave to do some fantastic lead, it’s a good vibe.”

Mikey continued – “Thanks so much to everyone who sponsored me. As the dressing up idea was so successful, I need to start thinking of an even better costume for the London Marathon next April!”

Of course our Mikey wasn’t the only one who did it in fancy dress – there were some great costumes and fundraisers taking part including this great bunch (pictured) from Alex’s Angels, who dressed up to raise cash in memory of their mate and local lad Alex McGuinness.

The Voyager school student sadly died earlier this year of leukaemia aged just 18 years-old and his friends have formed the fundraising group to raise cash for East Anglian Childrens Hospice (EACH) and Children with Leukaemia.

WHAT A GREAT (EASTERN) RUN! ESP’s Man About Town columnist Pep Cipriano and ESP writer Mikey Clarke are still nursing their blisters after taking part in the Great Eastern Run… along with thousands of others who braved the race or the fun run.

Mikey did his bit for charity and ran as… Wonder Woman!

He promised friends that if he reached over £500 in sponsorship money, he’d hire the costume and run the entire race in the dress.

Mikey chose this amount, as he didn’t think he’d quite reach the target, and therefore not have to do the forfeit. However, he quickly received a generous donation from David Dixon of Personnel Matters for the full £500!

Mikey told ESP – “Five hundred pounds is a lot of money, so I genuinely wasn’t expecting to have to run in the costume. When I saw www.es p m ag .co.u k ( No ve mbe r )

His mum Raena told ESP – “It’s fantastic Alex’s friends are doing this. He was the glue that held them all together, everyone would gather at our house before they went out – and now it’s like they’re still together because of him even though he’s gone.

“My experience with Alex totally changed my view of what hospices are all about – I just thought they were places people went to die but they’re so supportive, even now, which has been fantastic. They get very little funding so fundraising’s so important and sponsorship for Alex’s Angels is still coming in.”

In the main race Kenyan athlete Edwin Kipyego stormed across the finish line in 62 minutes 16 seconds to set a new course record while the first local man home was Glen Watts from March who crossed the finish line in 66 minutes 51 seconds.

Race director Stuart Hamilton said – "We had a record breaking number of runners sign up this year, so we knew we were in for a special day.

how awful I looked I almost regretted making the pact, but then I thought about what a great cause the money is going to. And to be honest, hearing the community shout things like ‘you can do it Wonder Woman’ helped me complete the run.”

"Once again the number of people registering to run has increased, which proves that the Perkins Great Eastern Run is now established as the greatest run in the Eastern region. We are very proud to have attracted some of the UK's most elite athletes this year. In addition I am very pleased that so many ordinary members of the community have turned out to run, whether it was for charity or simply for their own personal achievement."

He finished the run in just over two and a half hours, and raised nearly £700 in total for Sue Ryder Care, while poor Pep hobbled with injuries and had to walk the last few miles (see p.13).

Plans are already under way for the 2011 run and the principal sponsors have pledged funding to support the race for another five years. Good stuff – we can’t wait!
