SPIRIT OF PETERBOROUGH The Spirit of Peterborough event was a big success at The Brewery Tap with loads of fantastic local acts performing to show off the great talent we have here and to help raise people’s spirits. The event was the idea of Patcharee Shaweewan who runs East restaurant on the river and was raising funds for the Talking Fountain charity. The entertainment included the Key Youth Theatre through to The Gangsters and it’s hoped there’ll be more events to come. Nominations were taken on the night for people worthy of winning the new ‘Spirit of Peterborough Award’ to recognise what they’ve done to positively help the city, but the organisers are still looking for more names to be put forward. If you’d like to get involved with the events or have someone to nominate just email Lorraine.slynn @oakagroup.com

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SPRING FORWARD It’s hard to believe it’s a year since specialist hair and beauty shop Spring Forward opened up on Eastfield Road in Peterborough, but on May 7 they’ll be holding their first birthday celebrations. Shop owner Maria Situmbeko told ESP - “Women of colour have very special needs when it comes to hair and skin products, and there are very few shops in Peterborough that cater for us. This last year has been a time of growing the business and making people aware that we are here; the response has been fantastic! We have already had to move into plaiting, weaving and braiding and we’re planning to open a small hair salon in the near future.” The shop also sells a range of hair care products, skin treatments and hair extensions and is the exclusive local stockist of the Doris Michaels cosmetics range. Pop in or call 01733 319870.

LEVELLERS HIT THE BORO People often complain that we don’t get enough big bands coming here – well the guys at the Cresset are looking to change that. They’ve managed to get The Levellers to come to town on May 25. This band is amazing – if you’ve ever stood in a field with a lukewarm beer then you’ll love them. Their most famous song is ‘Beautiful Day,’ a real summer time anthem which you’ve almost definitely heard and when they play it

Lite FM programme controller Greg Nunney told ESP - “This was a real coup for us at Lite FM – Sir Alex hardly does any media interviews these days, so for him to talk exclusively to us was amazing! We’re really proud of what Posh have achieved this year, and what better way to celebrate Darren’s achievement than with a pat on the back from his Dad!” You can listen to the weekly sport show from 7pm ‘til 8pm every Wednesday.

LOCAL GIRL FIGHTS BACK IN NEW MOVIE Fran Walker from Thorpe Meadows, Peterborough has recently had the break of a lifetime. Her PR company has landed the job of supplying clothes for a new independent film starring Michael Harvey (MC Harvey of So Solid Crew) and Brian Harvey from E-17 – and she even has a part in the movie! The film, called ‘Fight Back’, will be set in London’s East End and Michael Harvey plays Tom, a young man who joined the army to escape bullies and a bad home life but returns to find things have gone downhill. He loses faith in the justice

system and decides to take matters into his own hands. Fran, who runs her own fashion PR company, went to the rough edit film premiere and got chatting to Fight Back’s director, Martin J Thomas. He looked at her website www.generatepr.co.uk, liked the look of her clients’ labels and asked if she could supply the clothes for the film! Fran also has a few scenes herself, as a bolshy barmaid. Fran told ESP – “He asked me if I could do a cockney accent, then he invited me to an audition and I got the part!” The filming begins in June, and rumour has it Danny Dyer may have a cameo role. Good luck Fran!

If you didn’t know, Kidney Research has its headquarters in Peterborough so no wonder loads of local people were keen to support their special Sky Dive Weekend which Kerry took part in. Around 52 people jumped and raised in the region of £10,000 for the charity. Kerry was buzzing from the thrill of the jump ”It was so amazing! I was so nervous before doing it and going up in the plane was a whole new experience in itself... I thought it would drop out of the sky at any minute during the whole flight. “I was paired with the most experienced guy (I demanded that as I thought there would be less risk of death!) The view from up there is amazing; I got to see Rutland Water and Wittering. I would recommend this to anyone. As soon as I landed I wanted to do it all over again!” If you missed out, there’s another great chance to help. A mad bloke called Steve Truglia is likely to become a household name soon as he attempts to break the High Altitude Parachute Jump World Record. He’ll be leaping from a hot air balloon up on the edge of space and diving more than 120,000ft. Steve’s ex-SAS, a Bond stuntman and a sky dive expert who

DOES WINE MAKE US BETTER LOOKING? Researchers at Glasgow University have discovered drinking wine can increase visual attractiveness by up to 30%. Boffins tell us it can take as little as two glasses to get in the mood for love and the more glasses we consume, the more our ‘romantic notions increase’. In other words you’ll end up boneing a minger thinking she’s Kirsty Gallagher. Then daylight breaks and you’ve woken up next to Rosa Klebb. When it comes to women and wine, a poll by Cyberpulse revealed that 59% of women aged 21-39 often prefer to be given wine as gifts rather than chocolate. But I’m not so convinced with the Glasgow Uni findings. Yes wine may help to let go of your inhibitions, but does drinking it really make you end up fancying someone who ordinarilly wouldn't stand out in a crowd? I put this question to the Man About Town Lady Reader Panel…

JOANNE QUINNEY

“Wine is just evil! I'm more partial to my trusty Malibu and Diet Coke. Put it this way, if a guy is creepy, dripping with beer, sweating and leaning on you like he's forgotten how to stand up; he’ll still be all of the above when the Malibutinted goggles are on! Alcohol shouldn’t be an excuse for copping off with a minger!”

ROMINA PINTO

“I’m quite partial to the odd glass of vino rosso. When I go out, I go out to have a dance and a laugh and I wouldn’t go as far as to say a glass of wine or two can make a man seem more attractive. Luckily I’m able to keep my wits about me! It does, however, give me that extra boost in confidence and I feel less inhibited about working that dancefloor!”

www.

JILL ROBERTS

“When I'm out I very rarely go out with the intention to ‘pull’. Touch wood I've never fallen victim to ‘beer goggles’ and I don't think it makes men seem more attractive, perhaps women just feel less picky! For some perculiar reason I seem to have gone off wine ever since I knocked my front tooth out vomiting after one Chianti too many late last year. Shameful!”

ANNA ELMORE

“A man with no inhibitions does it for me. No point hiding who you really are. No inhibitions means I don't have to hide mine. Drunkeness makes me realise that whoever comes on to me means he's horny not fit. After that it’s up to me...”

SUSAN SAUNDERS

“Most definitely, absolutely YES! I agree you can make, shall we say errors of judgement, after a glass or two of vino (red, rosso, white – it doesn’t matter – the outcome is usually the same). After a recent night on the vino, I was pointing out a guy who I thought was cute to my friend Kerry and her boyfriend Chris. They laughed and said how yucky he was – and it begged the question: just how drunk was I?!! Girls be warned, wine gives your rose-tinted spectacles!”

HOWARD LAUNCHES HIS CAPELLO PIZZA!

City man Howard Brown’s stint as a dead ringer for Fabio Capello has gathered pace at an alarming rate since appearing in this column a couple of month’s ago. I recently invited him to join me on my weekly Wednesday slot with breakfast show presenter, Keith Dalton, on Lite FM and he told us how his ‘career’ as the England manager continues to grab him loads of attention. One of Howard’s biggest publicity angles has seen him become the face of the latest Papa Luigi pizza menu. The city’s first and original pizza delivery firm have launched the Capello Pizza and 20% of each one sold across their franchised shops in Peterborough, Huntingdon, Northampton and Milton Keynes will go to the RNIB where Howard works. Owners of the pizza company have also approached the Pizza & Pasta Association in a bid to make the pizza available to all of its 5,000 members, which could mean the Capello Pizza is sold nationwide! And if that’s not enough, there’s a strong possibility Howard could make an appearance on Soccer AM as one of the country’s leading Capello look-alikes. Watch this space…

WANT TO BE MY RUN BUDDY?

“I don't think it makes men more attractive, even after one glass or bottle too many I can still tell the difference between a George Clooney type and a Pete Docherty! Although my friends might not agree!”

Now that I’ve done the Thorney and Eye 10k runs, I’ve sort of decided to give the Great Eastern Run (13.1 miles) a whirl. I notch up about 10 miles a week, which isn’t a great deal, so I’m a tad apprehensive about the Eastern even though it isn’t until October 12. You can enter now by visiting www.peterborough.gov.uk

Apart from Anna’s answer, which has me puzzled, and Susan who maybe had a Sambucca or two along with her wine bless her, I’m beginning to think those guys at Glasgow Uni lost their findings along with their bagage at Terminal 5 and made it all up.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to train with me (to make sure I do it and turn up even if it’s raining) then drop me a line, pep.cipriano@espmag.co.uk. Or you can join me (when I can be bothered to get up Sunday mornings) to blast out a few miles at Esporta Running Club. Anyone who’d like to sign up should contact Phil Elmer by emailing philelmer@aol.com. I’m pictured with the Esporta guys after the Thorney run – the silly looking baseball caps we’re wearing came with goody bags for participating. They’re not compulsory don’t worry.

A LESSON LEARNED

I was recently wheel-clamped behind Barclays Bank in town and had mixed emotions about it. • I was p*ssed off some sad individual bothered to report me to the clamping company when I was taking up one space from six that were all empty during a weekday evening • I was p*ssed off the clamping notice on my car window was stuck down so firmly that it had to be removed with a vigorous application of white spirit (I made the clamping man do it)

Contact lenses Designer eyewear

• I was p*ssed off it cost me £100 to release my wheel • I was surprised the man who came to take it off only gets £20 for doing it • I was pleased the remaining £80 didn’t go to the clamping company (so he told me) • I was pleased after learning the remaining £80 goes towards the upkeep of the parking area • I was p*ssed off the upkeep is defined as, ‘removing graffiti from walls and replacing outside lamps that vandals smash for fun’ • I was surprised to learn one of the spaces doesn’t actually belong to anyone – and I can park there without getting clamped from now on

THANK YOU EL ESHA

I’d like to say a big thank you to El esha hair salon who are making way on this page for another of the city’s successful businesses to sponsor Man About Town. I’d like to thank owner Jayne for making me look a few years younger with a decent haircut and big hugs to all the team who always brighten my day when I pop in to get my ears lowered. El esha continue to raise money for the Peverels old people’s home in Peterborough, with monthly donations generated from their salon theme days. Last month it was Disney characters and on May 17 you can see the El esha crew all kitted out in 1980s clobber. Congratulations to Georgia and Kirsty for qualifying as fully fledged hairdressers and Jayne would like to compliment Claire for being a fab ‘holiday rep’ and Maggie for doing a great job as salon manager. See you soon guys, keep up the good work and Georgia, get the wax on for me please…

NEW JOB – HOW BI G IS TH E PACKAG E? Massive congratulations to the Posh who’ve gained promotion and will return to League One football next season. Having been born in Northampton, I was brought up a dyed-in-the-wool Cobblers supporter, but I soon managed to split my allegiance once I moved to Peterborough and was invited down to spend a day at the Posh. Sitting in reception, waiting to be collected, who walked through and asked if we were OK but Sir Barry himself. I don’t know what it is about that man but it was as much as I could do to resist the urge to curtsey although I did manage to stumble a - “Fine, um thanks, err Sir Posh, erm Fry, erm Barry,” and yes, I’m still recovering from the embarrassment. In the words of the Big Bro 8 twins “double cringe!” Highlights of the day were gettin g to sit in the players’ bath (sadly alone) and Barry responding to my obvious intere st in footballers thighs (I blame Gary Linekar, I’ve never been quite the same since I saw his shorts in Italia 90) by offering me a job as apprentice groin strain massa ger. Barry, if you’re reading this, I’m still waiting… and still very much up for the job! Blue would most definitely be the colour.

IT’S ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU SICK I’m confused by the whole John Prescott Bulimia thing. I’m not going to make the obvious gag that he must’ve been suffering from dementia too as he clearly forgot to throw up afterwards, because that would just be cheap but I don’t understand all this praise he’s getting for being brave. “I took refuge in stuffing my face,” he has said, admitting to gorging on burgers, chocolate, crisps and fish and chips throughout his time in government. Surely this is not some big revelation, I can’t believe there’s a single person in the country who’s going to say - “No way, really? Wow John, you kept that quiet, I’d never have guessed you were seeking comfort in stuffing yourself full of high calorie, high fat junk food.” I guess though, that his comments are a good thing as it has brought more awareness about what can be a very serious and hard to talk about condition but he did get me seriously worried when he said - “Marks & Spencer trifles, I still love them, one of my favourites. I can eat them forever.” Blimey, this condition must be more widespread than I thought - if that’s a symptom, then me and half the population must be sufferers.

PRAISE TO THE LARD ALMIGHTY! The best bit of news I’ve heard all month is that doctors in Portugal say a 20st British man survived being shot by a taxi driver because his lardy belly stopped the bullets. So technically, that’s a medical endorsement that being obese can actually save your life! What a license not to feel guilty next time I’m feeling the need to attack an industrial sized bar of Galaxy! I shall just tell my conscience that with gun crime on the up in Britain, what I’m actually doing is not so much stuffing my face in a frenzy of chocolate covered delight, but more being incredibly socially aware and taking important steps to protect myself. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.

1950’sFASHION It’s time to head back to the future and say Grease is the word! Guys turn your collars up and girls get practising that hand jive, ESP’s Joanne Quinney steps back in time with those guys ‘n’ gals from the bopping 50’s!

Whether you’re a T-Bird or a Pink Lady, everyone has their favourite character from the classic musical Grease. Set in the rocking 1950’s, each character, and their clothes in particular have something to suit every style. The prom frocks, ruby red lips and leather jackets are hitting high street stores everywhere, already having made a huge impact on the catwalks and with celebs. Was the Sandra Dee-esque Sandy your fave? Look to stores like Warehouse and River Island as they’re full of the original 50’s style prom dresses, in a variety of pastel shades. Choose from pink and lemon to floral and mint green. Acting and looking ‘lady like’ was virtually taught from birth back then, so complement your look with pearls, or go all out with cute ankle socks and gloves! Sexy Sandy more your vibe? Take a tip from the T-Birds and invest in a good vintage leather jacket. This black classic never dates and can be worn dressed down with jeans or go for the rock chick look a la Alexa Chung and wear one over a dress. Guys this is a great look for you too, just as it was in the 50’s, the one thing a guy back then couldn’t let go of was his leather jacket and his comb! There are worse things you could do, than take a tip from Rizzo or two. In fact

w w w.

her style is bang on trend! No wardrobe was complete without a pencil skirt back in the 50’s; they were seen as sexier as they showed off a woman’s curves and gave a ‘figure eight’ look. Our model Kathryn looks like she’s stepped out of a scene with Kenickie in this gorgeous yellow shirt tucked into this season’s skirt, the higher the waistline the better, it really cinches in the waist to give that hour glass effect. If you’re feeling a bit more daring try high waisted denim shorts, worn with simple accessories and a vest top or shirt this look can be very high trend, just don’t try to do too much to the outfit, the shorts speak volumes! The great thing about this trend is that it’ll suit all different body shapes. Those who are curvier can flaunt their assets with cinched in waistlines, and full skirts are flattering on the lower body. It’s time to ditch the straighteners for loose curls or a cute pony tail, neck scarf at the ready, then head to the diner or maybe the prom and dance the night away! Out thanks to local Rock ‘n’ Roll band The Houndogs, modelling their own gear in our shoot. For the best fifties sound book these guys on 01664 474239.

Steve Gonzalez

steve.gonzalez@espmag.co.uk

The page that's come up with an idea for a TV show where Tim Lovejoy investigates unsolved crimes in football... It's called "Soco AM".

Let's recap. Series one winner Tim, a former British Rail manager was employed by Sugar to sell a range of cosmetic products for women. Can't remember what it was called, probably something like ‘Amslap’. Tim now no longer works for Sugar and has set up his own business selling a product the public would like to buy, unlike ‘Amslap’.

A SPOON FULL OF (SIR ALAN) SUGAR Hurray, The Apprentice is back and Sir Alan Sugar is as quotably laughable as ever. "This is a business boot camp. Mary Poppins I am not!" he bellows at the schmucks in his fake boardroom. Altogether now - "Super-cali-fragilistic-ex-be-ala-docious… most of the the-apprenticecontestants-are-atrocious." From the moment he came out with "Mary Poppins I am not" I knew this month’s comedy page was half way written. It’s up there with the time he told one of the contestants - "Don't try and bulls*** me, because you'll be out that

door as sure as there's a hole in my bloody arse!" Anyway series four has seen the usual collection of egotistical pretentious big-heads with overblown claims of greatness. The good, the bad and the downright ghastly - all vying to win a job in some part of Sugar's business empire; but what job will they be offered? Well, we don't know, because Sugar never tells them that until the end. But if previous series are anything to go by, then it's normally a subsidiary company of Amstrad that features Alan Sugar's initials 'AMS' at the front of it.

Series two - Michelle Dewsbury. The much maligned Michelle was employed to work on Grumpy Al's latest brainwave. A company that offered a waste disposal service for electrical goods. Can't remember what this was called either, (I think it might’ve been Ams-crap.) Michelle left after a couple of months. The press made a big thing about her relationship with fellow contestant Syed and her miscarriage, but the real reason she left was because Sugar scrapped 'Amscrap' when he found out that local councils offered a similar service for free, and also because if people want to get rid of broken electrical goods they normally put it in the bin or take it down the tip... or if you're me you ring up Sky and get them to send a man round with a new satellite set top box receiver made by Sony which hasn't had any of the problems the Amstrad one did. Series three - Simon Ambrose, employed to work at Sugar's property company called 'Amsprop' which is run by Sugar's son, Daniel. Ambrose, we were told would be working on developing a new golf course and hotel 'Amsprop' were building near Stansted airport. A year on and Ambrose is no longer working on the golf course project, (probably fed up making cups of tea for the builders). According to Sugar, Simon’s now developing a website for him. Hmm, I wonder what Sugar's called that business? Amstillnotgoingtotrustatvshowwinnertodoapro perjobformeassureastheresaholeinmybloodyar se.com Anyway, enjoy the rest of the series and watching Sugar choose the wrong winner for the fourth time in a row.

THE MR POSH MONOCLE MYSTERY

As all Peterborough United fans know, Posh have the smartest looking mascot in the country. Mr Posh (AKA Mick Jones) has been a regular part of match days at London Road since the early 90's and is known to football supporters across the country. However, despite his dapper appearance (morning suit, top hat, rosette, those funny white bits that go over his shoes) there’s one accessory that I feel his 'Posh' look is missing... a monocle. For far too long, Patrick Moore and Chris Eubank have monopolised (or should that be monocolised) the monocle, but if there's one person who can reclaim the monocle and restore it to its rightful place (i.e. on the face of a poshly dressed gentleman) then it's Mr Posh.

JOKES OF THE MONTH

"I've got a pet pig called 'oink oink'. He's the only pig in the world that can say his own name." Elliot Gable "I was walking past my local shop before Easter, and they had the opening times up. In between Good Friday and Easter Sunday was a day they were calling 'Holy Saturday'. Holy Saturday? There is no Holy Saturday, it's just a Saturday like any other. 'Holy Saturday' sounds like the kind of thing Robin would say to Batman when he was made to come in and work on his day off." Russell Brand "For the new series of 'Top Gear' Jeremy Clarkson has test driven the Skoda car that was made out of cake in their advert. Apparently it drives just like a normal car, except the brakes are a bit spongey, and the windows keep icing up." Liza Tarbuck

STAND OUT, STAND UP There are two great comedy nights coming up in May that are well worth a mention. First up on Friday May 23 is The Best of Leicester Comedy Festival on Tour at the Stamford Arts Centre. This features Robin Ince (pictured with me), Zoe Lyons (who looks a bit like Cherie Blair, but is a lot funnier), Carl Donnelly (who I once shared a flat with in Edinburgh) and Andrew Bird (who I've never met so can't comment). If you're a fan of Ricky Gervais then this night’ll be worth going to as Robin Ince is Gervais' regular warm-up man when he tours. He’s also featured on all three of Gervais' extremely successful stand up DVD's, normally being tormented or wound-up by Gervais. If you have the 'Animals' DVD, then put the 'commentary' option on and you'll hear some great stories from the pair of them. It's quite possibly the best 'commentary' ever put on a stand up DVD, and Ince deserves to be known by a far wider audience than he is. Stamford Arts Centre box office: 01780 763203. Then on May 30, the last in the current season of The Cresset Comedy Club with American stand up Dave Fulton. Dave will be familiar to many of you from countless appearances on TV panel shows, and he also put in a very funny performance as an American car enthusiast in Saxondale with Steve Coogan. Do go check these guys out if you have the time/money/sense of humour as I can highly recommend them, and when it comes to comedy when have I ever let you down? The Cresset box office: 01733 265705.

Next Month:

I'll bring you some exclusive details about the Rock for Laughter comedy/music extravaganza that's you'll see advertised elsewhere in ESP. It takes place at Elton Hall on August 15 and features Lenny Henry, Jasper Carrott, Jo Brand, and Phill Jupitus plus musical guests.

BRIGHT EYES

Gym memberships, detoxing and the latest work out DVDs are just some of the things we use to stay healthy but how many of us think about our eyes? As we head into summer it’s particularly important to think about eye care as the strength of the sun increases and we try to grab as much of it as we can! Independent optometrist Gerry Sondh from The Oculist in the Westgate Arcade, Peterborough, has helped us out by suggesting a number of ways to keep our eyes healthy as we move into summer. The first thing to think of is eye protection – good shades, prescription sunglasses if needed and safety glasses for gardening or DIY – that should keep your eyes safe from most summertime hazards! Dehydration can affect your eyes badly – so Gerry suggests drinking lots of water and drinking alcohol only in moderation. Smoking and consuming excessive booze in particular are big no-nos if you want to keep those eyes shining bright! A key thing to remember is that healthy eyes come with a healthy body – diet’s a really important factor in eye health, which many of us often forget. A balanced diet with lots of fresh fruit and veg as well as a good balance of protein, carbohydrates and the right amount and type of sugars and fats can do wonders for your eye health. Having fresh fish in your diet can really help and it’s best to steer clear of fatty meat. So we’ve taken care of the food part of our ‘healthy body, healthy eyes’ motto – but what about exercise? You may not relate it to your eyes, but cardio vascular exercise is really important in keeping blood vessels healthy – something our eyes rely on. So take advantage of those sunnier days and get active! All this healthy eyes stuff may sound like hard work but here comes the good news – Gerry advises that we get plenty of rest too! As most of us have a pretty hectic lifestyle, it’s important that we get plenty of rest so our eyes can recover from the stresses and strains of daily life. So there you have it, the perfect excuse to sit back and chill out – your eyes will thank you for it! National chain Vision Express also claim that an overwhelming 82% of us say eyesight’s our most precious sense, so it’s vital we take care of our eyes. Sally Polak from Vision Express says it’s really important that people keep their eyes healthy. Diet’s just one step in the right direction but having regular eye tests is also essential. Having an eye examination is not just a check to see if you need glasses, but also a health check that can pick up on conditions such as diabetes or glaucoma. So even if you think that your eyesight’s fine it’s worth having an eye test every two years to make sure you maintain a good level of eye health and detect any potential medical conditions early on. The guys and girls at the Michael John salon in Queensgate are still celebrating after some of their up-and-coming hairdressers made a big impact at a national hairdressing competition. Six trainees went through from the area heats at Nuneaton to the National Finals of the A.H.T competitions event in Blackpool. Jade Bingham won first place in the first year Blow Dry. Next up was Hollie Hunter winning first place in the second year Cut & Blow Dry followed by Tony Barsby gaining third place; this was her second year qualifying for the event. Salon owner Michael told ESP - “They’ve all been working really hard, it’s great to get six trainees to qualify for the National Championships, I think that’s a record for us.” Joanne Cooper

KERRY GETS PHYSICAL AT NEW WAREHOUSE

Our Face of ESP Kerry Bates got physical when she hung out (as it were!) with Barry Fry at the launch of the Physiotherapy Warehouse on Maxwell Road in Woodston (just behind Flower Scene).

We would like to welcome Nicola and Jenny our new Nail Technician and Beauty Therapist.

109 Welland Road, Dogsthorpe PE1 3SJ Tel: 01733 894060

This place has the works when it comes to physio and fitness gear and Kerry seemed to try out most of it! It’s been set up by Craig Fleming who decided to go into the business after he suffered back problems himself and struggled to find the products he was being recommended to buy. Well, he’s certainly solved that one! The Physiotherapy Warehouse has the lot with everything from physio supplies, through to sport and fitness equipment, even pregnancy and first aid. Whatever you need for any rehabilitation or pain relief. “Products here are accessible and affordable plus you can try everything on to get just the right fit. We’ve had a really good response from physiotherapists already who now have somewhere to send you if you need any kind of support or equipment to get yourself back to full health after an injury.” So lads, when you suffer that groin strain at Sunday five-a-side you know where to head! Barry Fry says the lads at Peterborough United will no doubt be making use of some of the kit, but let’s hope the team don’t need too much help eh? “It’s a great idea,” said Barry. “We at POSH will give it 100% support, it’s absolutely fantastic.” Tel: 01733 391388. www.physiowarehouse.co.uk

Karen Devine

AS SEEN ON

karen.devine@espmag.co.uk

It’s 2am in the morning, not the usual time I sit and write my column but tonight, or should I say this morning, the head and body are not in sync, one says sleep the other says no. Don’t you just hate that? Thankfully the night owl is not the norm for me. But what about the thousands of people in Britain who’ve tried everything from the odd herbal pill to lavender and counting sheep (where the heck did that remedy come from?) who are constantly faced with this problem? At some point in all our lives we find we can’t sleep for the odd night or two. There’s nothing worse than running through the day you’ve just had whether that’s with the kids, in the office or the dire game of golf you played. How many times do you go through the conversations that took place, thinking about the next day and what needs to be done? Then of course you might have a snoring buddy next to you! You try breathing into their snoring rhythm; when that fails you use the natural tried and tested remedy called the ‘back heel kick’… that usually does the trick! Falling off to sleep can be a problem, or you may get to sleep but wake two hours later. Or what about the falling asleep about four or five in the morning, then the alarm goes off three hours later - makes you feel like a steam roller has rolled over you as you try to peel yourself out of bed! We know lack of sleep can contribute to – • Weight gain • Low immunity • Premature ageing

TV

GMTV, LK Today and UKTV Style’s ‘Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses’

If you can identify any of these key areas then getting regular sleep can be achieved as most of them can be dealt with by yourself, by looking at your diet (honestly!) and replacing that unhealthy diet with one that feeds your body what it needs (don’t tell me your body needs that bacon butty in the morning, or your packet of Hob Nobs!). Good quality protein foods (fish, eggs, chicken etc.) fats, small amounts of complex carbs, fresh water and high levels of veggies will help feed your body. Other measures such as yoga, identifying any food intolerances, getting some fresh air in the day, detoxification, stress management and much more can help. There are nutritional supplements that can be taken, but always take advice. Enough said, it’s now 3am so hopefully I can get some Zzzz’s Sleep well, Karen N.B If you’re on medical drugs and are looking to take herbal or nutritional supplements, always discuss with your doctor or get advice from a nutritionist or practitioner who can help you make the right choices, some supplements can interact with the medical drugs. Karen has a diploma in nutritional medicine, nutritional therapeutics and homotoxicology; she is a member of the British Association of Nutritional Therapists and runs her own private practice.

KAREN’S BACK ON THE BOX!

Yep, you can see ESP’s regular columnist Karen Devine on the tele again this month. She’s back with a second series called The Weightloss Spa. Karen will again be starring alongside TV’s Amanda Hamilton on UKTV Style on Tuesday May 6

• Lack of concentration and motivation • Sugar, alcohol, nicotine and other cravings and much more Whatever the reason for short or long term sleeplessness, some causes can be… • Food intolerances • Chemical imbalances in the brain • Nutritional deficiencies • Unresolved emotions • Hormonal imbalances • Dehydration • Chemicals in foods such as sweeteners • Too much alcohol, salt and caffeine • Having a deck phone near your bed (a cordless phone -) not a good idea so unplug this at night (better still get it out of the house!)

through ‘til Friday May 9. On the Tuesday night you can watch the first two episodes and then the other three episodes will be shown each week night. Since first appearing on ‘The Spa of Embarrassing Illnesses’, Peterborough based nutritionist Karen has become a bit of a regular on the goggle box and has recently been on GMTV helping one viewer to lose weight for her wedding. If you’ve been following the story it’s all going according to plan and with Karen’s help and recommended diet, the bride-to-be is on course to slim into her wedding dress having never managed to lose much weight before. Just shows you should read our Karen’s column each month for a healthy new you!

‘Joe’ of all trades... master of one! The ESP Dance Crew meet up with Joe Ballard the main man behind this year’s Peterborough Festival… Booking some of the country’s best performers and mingling with the acts might seem like the most glamorous job in the city council, but when it comes to festival week Joe will have to be ‘the man who can’. So even if the loo cleaner doesn’t show up when needed, he’ll have to muck in to make things right as he’s the main man! Yep, it’s hard to believe this 25 year-old is the guy who has to make it all happen, but when you meet Joe you can see just how passionate he is about making this year’s Peterborough Festival one to remember. “My role as Festival & Events Manager includes programming, fundraising, marketing, audience research, managing the events of the Festival,” he tells us. Safe to say he’s a busy guy then! “At 25 I’m young for the role, the youngest in the country, just as I was the youngest venue artistic director in my last job. It’s nice while it lasts with its

funny experiences like being ID’d at the bar at events I’ve organised! Turning up at meetings as people wait for someone older to arrive…” The Peterborough Festival is now in its ninth year and runs from June 28 to July 6 and Joe has been working really hard to move it forward with a fresh feel. The theme of ‘Summer Fantasy’ certainly gives it new scope and the ESP Dancers and promotions crew will be there to add to the fantasy flavour. “We’ve had some really good suggestions and response to the theme so far,” Joe tells us. “Some really imaginative and some quite raunchy! And there’s nothing wrong with making a Council service look sexy! “I really want to abolish the impression that we’re all oldies in suits spending council tax!” Joe tells us. “In recent years, 80% of the Festival has been externally funded (e.g. English Partnerships and corporate sponsorship etc). I’m proud that what we present is actually very good value. Another city’s Festival has a turnover of just under a million pounds and it engages with just 40,000 people. We engage with that number of people with a budget ten times smaller!” It’s not easy convincing people you can deliver but Joe’s determined to make this year’s Peterborough Festival stand out with shows like ‘Hydromania’, a light and water show on the

d ont s cr ap t h et ap . co m

river which has performers with tubes running through their costumes which spurt fountains of water into the air as part of a spectacular light show. “A Festival is the interaction between a place, artists and its people, which is why we have brought in world-renowned artists but have local people taking part alongside them,” adds Joe “The Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra’s performance on Sunday June 29 will have local people performing on stage with them at the beginning. Imagine that – performing on stage with the nation’s favourite orchestra!” Here at ESP we’re all about promoting the great things Peterborough has to offer and we want to see the Peterborough Festival become one of the main events of summer in the city. We’ll have more on what you can expect from this year’s Summer Fantasy next month but grab a brochure for the full line-up from midMay at various outlets across the area, or check out www.peterboroughfestival.com Festival info line: (01733) 207200 or email festival@peterborough.gov.uk We’ll have full details of what’s happening at the Festival in next month’s issue. Come on, let’s party… summer’s coming!

Confessions... Susan Saunders

susan.saunders@espmag.co.uk

One flute of vintage Dom Perignon followed another and after a few perfectly timed ‘hurrahs’ and ‘jolly goods’ AND collecting my huge win of £14.50 (how lucky am I?!) day wore on in to evening.

This month Susan’s playing it posh and betting on a ‘racey’ hen do… When you think hen do’s in Peterborough, may I be forgiven for suggesting you’d generally think of a p*ss up and a not-so-hunky stripper down your local (…you could’ve at least sent a fit one – cheers sis). Later on, you’d probably be found tumbling around to the beat, utterly intoxicated, in Chicagos. But no, not I. Last month saw the truly refined hen do, of my friend and true to life ‘WAG’ (sorry I couldn’t resist). For a little bit of background, if you actually care, we were celebrating the future wedding of my pal, Claire soon-to-be-Norris, to Peterborough born and bred footy player David Norris, who now plays for Ipswich. Anyway, enough of all that and back to the refined hen do. So, I went to my very first day at the races – The Grand National - and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed myself, it was an experience and a half I have to say. Aintree was filled with two types of person; the rich and the definitely NOT rich. The two groups wouldn’t normally mix, with the rich on the higher tiers, in a kind of hierarchical fashion, and the ‘not so rich’ and the expert gamblers of the world around the track. On this day however, the unheard of happened and I, part of the definitely not rich camp (but Sir Alan be aware – I will create an empire bigger than yours one day), rubbed shoulders with couture Vivienne Westwood and Louis Vuitton. This label namedropping malarkey actually translates as ‘I got barged by some toff wearing Couture Viv Westy (excuse the fashion blasphemy – me and Vivienne go way back!) ‘Susan, must really know her labels’ I hear you cry – no actually I was so close to said toff because she was standing (heavily) on my high street leather-clad big toe as she teetered past in her Jimmy Choo's. She was practically on top of me so I was able to see her protruding couture Viv Westy label, which on a normal day I would’ve tucked in for her, but between us lay the tail of what could be loosely described as AN ACTUAL DEAD FOX (is that legal?!). Remembering where I was, I restrained myself from shouting - ‘Oh mighty s*@t’, and replaced it with a more lady like ‘balderdash’. Ignoring the fact that the lady didn’t really apologise, ‘Errrrrr H-E-L-L-O?!’ and seeing past the red mist, it was back to the betting.

The evening was home to the ‘Living Room’ amongst other trendy bars in Liverpool and I felt much more relaxed. Not really understanding what some keano Spanish guy was saying to me, I kind of gave him the cold shoulder as tonight was a girly night and his humour, I didn’t get (!)…until my gorgeous friend Claire said to me…”Susan, that’s only bl**dy Torres.” “Torres, schmorres I reply. Makes no bl**dy odds, I need to understand what a guy says to me… got to be a good place to start right?!” Claire and all other women worldwide: silence. Later, unveiling the previously and explicitly banned (by Claire), tacky hen do decorations, which were draped all over our private table (Claire, you love it really) - it was obvious that we were ‘out of towners’ for the evening, which we didn’t mind one bit (you can get up to more mischief that way). So, I’m writing this to you on my four-hour train journey home (driving with a hangover not a good look!!) and next time you think you fancy a different type of hen do and all of your hens can afford to spend the price of a small island on the trip, you may wish to use the above formula for a fun weekend. Not one to alienate those of you who aren’t attending a hen do any time this century, Liverpool’s a must. Please be warned however that the guys are very forward in that neck of the woods. I got a complimentary chat-up line with my drink to the tune of…“S*x with me is like white water rafting; challenging at first but then exhilarating!” Excusi me but absolute CRINGE with a capital, like, everything (said in an American accent)! Susan’s disclaimer OK, yeesss so maybe I made up the part about meeting Torres. I do this sometimes; embellish the truth, for two reasons – 1. to make a story more fun and 2. to make myself feel better! The only Spaniard was a man called Hugo, the 67 year-old pot washer who’s son would love me ( apparently?!) Maybe his son’s Torres…or maybe not, whatever?! We did meet some of the Hollyoaks crew though – Mercedes is HOT!

Caught in the a ESP PAPARAZZI

WE JOIN THOMAS COOK CHARITY NIGHT This month’s Paparazzi crew of lensman Pep Cipriano and his lusty trusty sidekicks Kerry Bates and Susan Saunders dropped into Peterborough United’s Executive Suite where Thomas Cook hosted a charity night for the Variety Club Children’s Charity. The charity’s aim is to raise money to help create a larger and more modern Variety Club Children's Hospital - and to provide two new state-of-the-art children's wards at the Kings College Hospital in London. Staff at Thomas Cook are working hard to raise £2 million, which will dramatically improve the hospital environment for sick children from all over the UK, as well as many from overseas. Almost £1 million’s been raised for the Variety Club by Thomas Cook in the last 18 months and a further £1,600 was added following a night of fun and frolics at London Road. The money was raised by staff giving karaoke a whirl (some of them should stick to their day jobs!) and through ticket sales for the event and a giant raffle. Posh star striker Aaron McLean was on hand to sign autographs and pose for photos with dozens of Posh fans, some of them visibly star struck by his presence – and why not! The event went on until the early hours, proving the Thomas Cook crowd really do know how to party hard and raise cash for good causes at the same time. Well done guys and keep up the hard work.

ESPCELEBS Watch out world, the Diva is back! More than 160 million worldwide album sales… hey, it’s all relative to Mariah as she hits us with new album ‘E=MC2’ After bringing London to a standstill on her recent visit to the UK Mariah Carey‘s promotional rollercoaster hasn’t paused. From lighting up the Empire State Building in her favourite colours of pink and lavender (hey, if you’re gonna promote a new album it doesn’t get much better!) to a live gig in Times Square on ‘Good Morning America’ (OK so that one didn’t go quite as well – the backing track jumped!) she’s back in the limelight big style. The native New Yorker was sent a proclamation of congratulation on her eighteenth number one by the mayor and they’ve even declared April 15 official Mariah Day in LA! Her new album ‘E=MC2’ has been one of the most eagerly anticipated albums of the year. It’s her eleventh studio album and is the follow-up to ‘The Emancipation of Mimi’, Mariah’s worldwide ten million selling number one album, which generated three Grammy awards, two number one singles and helped make her the most successful female recording artist in history. Back in January 2007 Mariah attended the opening of the ‘Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls - South Africa’ and of course was invited on to the Oprah Winfrey show to discuss her phenomenal success. Much like Oprah, Mariah's fluctuating weight has been just as popular a topic as her huge recording success - "I think the whole body image thing and people expecting everybody to be this thin is ridiculous. It just isn't reality." However, she is indeed back in fine physical form and has graced the cover of US Weekly revealing her diet and fitness routine which saw her lose 20lbs and drop three dress sizes. She told the Oprah audience that after a close friend made a comment about her weight, she was

inspired to get into shape once and for all and turned to her nutrition and fitness coach, Patricia. "Finally I just said, 'It has to be a life decision if you're going to really lose the weight’. So Patricia created a number of things for me... one is a workout regimen." That means sixty to ninety minute workouts of combined cardio and resistance training. The biggie though is diet – lean protein, loads of veggies, all cooked with very little oil and no more cheese burgers – yep even the pop Diva likes her naughty feel-good snacks girls! "That's the thing that I have difficulty letting go of,” she confessed, “because that's comfort food." Having achieved the seemingly impossible and slimming down to her teenage body shape, she still maintains it’s not that much of a big deal. "For me, it's not about a number on a scale. It's not about necessarily even a size. It's about feeling good and being comfortable in your own skin. Right now, I feel really great. I feel better than I've ever felt." Mariah recently performed her latest single ‘Bye Bye’ on American Idol on which she mentored the final seven. It’s just one of the songs she co-wrote on the new album and is an emotional song about the loss of her father. Although some of the lines are specifically about her dad, Mariah thinks everyone will be able to relate to her words "A lot of people are saying it helps them get through the difficulty of maybe losing a loved one, a grandmother, a sister, a mother, and this is something that a lot of my friends and I have kind of gone through together. I almost feel like it's my job to write these kinds of songs for everybody who will go through it." www.mariahcarey.com

LOCALFOOD

The Haycock Hotel

It’s all change at The Haycock Hotel in Wansford so if you fancy some fine dining in a fantastic setting it’s time to see what the new team has to offer… Let’s face it; it’s not always easy to find somewhere to dine out with the right mix of quality food, atmosphere and surroundings so if The Haycock has dropped off your radar, now is a great time to seek out this gorgeous restaurant and give it a try. It’s all about change at The Haycock at the moment with new general manager Linda Nicholson at the helm, a team of eleven chefs, with Anthony Fletcher in charge and a whole new menu.

Anthony Fletcher

Executive Chef Anthony might be just 26 but he has a wealth of experience which makes your taste buds tingle. With a mouth-watering CV which includes names such as Sopwell House, with Warren Jones and Charlton House with David Cavalier, he’s catered at many huge events, for VIPs and celebs including the England football team. Safe to say this guy knows his onions then! Anthony’s keen to serve up ‘real food’ and to use as much locally sourced produce as possible so you’ll see frequent changes to the menu. A great reason to get your other half to treat you to a lovely meal every few weeks! “It’ll all depend on what’s available at the market,” Anthony explains, “the weather, and what’s in season. We want to utilise what our country has to offer, not fly in food from abroad and make as much use of the fabulous local produce that’s available as we can. “We want our customers to feel they’ve had a fantastic meal but that they’re getting good value so there’ll be larger portions – you won’t leave the restaurant hungry!” Taking inspiration from restaurants he’s eaten in up and down the country and Central Europe and modifying dishes cooked for previous chefs, Anthony has a particular flair for light sauces and has heavy Italian influences in his cooking. His talented team including Nigel Jeffery and Shaun Langdon certainly know how to produce some gorgeous looking, and tasting, dishes and pastry chef Nigel creates desserts to die for! The hotel itself is in a beautiful setting near the river and has been extensively refurbished but still retains its historic character. There’s a lovely cosy restaurant area with stone walls and dimmed lighting or the brighter and airy conservatory restaurant which overlooks the gardens. The courtyard area is ideal for tea and cake outside on those sunny days – when we get some! The guys promise a Sunday lunch to remember with potatoes cooked in goose fat, joints carved in the restaurant and silver service for £24.99. Looking ahead, if you’re mulling over where to take your Dad for Father’s Day the guys are putting together an ‘All You Can Eat BBQ’ for June 15 for just £14.95 which sounds pretty good to us! Go on, a change is as good as a rest…

Shaun Langdon (left) and Nigel Jeffery (right)

Meet the guys… You need talented chefs to really put a restaurant on the map and Anthony’s ably supported by Nigel Jeffery and Shaun Langdon. Nigel the pastry chef began his apprenticeship in Sydney Australia in 1994 but came to England in 1998 to work at the Branston Hall hotel in Lincoln and raced through the ranks, he then went back home to work at the Quay restaurant – one of the top six in Sydney – which was then awarded restaurant of the year. During Nigel’s time there it also received the highest award possible in the Good Food Guide. Fortunately for us he returned to England in 2006, was snapped up by Maze (Jason Atherton and Gordon Ramsay) and later Japanese restaurant Zuma before ending up in our neck of the woods at the Haycock. He then encouraged chef, Shaun Langdon to come to England as he also started out in Australia where he worked with some of the big restaurant names out there. Shaun joined the team at The Haycock a few months ago and is making his mark with some wonderful dishes as part of the new menu. We’ve seen him in action and the results are amazing!

The day kicked off at The Cherry Tree car park with the Custom Show, with prizes for the best scooters. The judging of this caused a few arguments – ending with Steve from PLVSC being presented with a bottle of wine just to keep the peace! By 12.45pm there were over 220 scooters waiting to head off and when they did, the smoke from all those twostroke engines nearly choked Kerry! The road outside The Cherry Tree was lined with spectators cheering and taking photos. Travelling past Peterborough United Football Ground they headed out on to the parkway and what a fantastic sight this must’ve looked from the other carriageway! Once the eggs had all been dropped off at Thorpe Hall and Manor Respite Home, they returned to The Cherry Tree for a few pints, to look at each other’s bikes and have a chat with people from all the other clubs that turned up. It was fantastic turn out including local guys from the Stamford SC to further afield like Kettering Massive, Leicestershire Alliance and Lincoln Knights SC.

Peterborough Lambretta Vespa and Scooter Club hit the road on their 11th annual Egg Run recently and our Face of ESP Kerry Bates went along to see them off… In case you’ve missed this before, the guys and girls get on their bikes and drop absolutely tons of Easter eggs off to places like Thorpe Hall Hospice and Manor Respite Home in Dogsthorpe. Knowing how much she loves chocolate, we sent our Kerry along to join in the fun. Organiser Mark ‘Corky’ Courten was particularly pleased to be able to pose with the ESP babe sitting on his scooter!

The day didn’t end there – the evening saw a massive party down at the Fleet with Ska Trek (wonder what kind of music they play?) doing a few sets that got the whole room bouncing. One club member Si Billy Bosett told ESP – “This was a great end to a fantastic day in what is becoming one of the top egg runs to be seen at. Thanks to Corky, Sherrie and all the unsung heroes at PLVSC for making this all happen!” PLVSC was formed back in 1997 and is going strong with around 60 members. The guys (and girls) put in loads of work on their amazing looking scooters but put just as much effort into helping local charities with events such as this. Good on yer guys! They meet at The Cherry Tree every second Sunday, so if you fancy joining in then have a look at their website www.plvsc.co.uk.

This month’s car is supplied by Marshall Peugeot

LET OUT THE DEV L INSIDE YOU Peugeot 207GTi THP175

This car will take you to the limit… or the city limits in my case anyway.

After doing the boring bit like photo shoots, information gathering and talking to different people about the cars I test drive, I finally get to do the exciting stuff, like driving them anywhere it takes me! The new Peugeot 207GTI THP175 brings back memories of the old 106GTI and 306GTI and is one of the best cars I’ve had so far. The handling’s superb and very responsive and does 0 – the shops in about 1 minute, so in this case it’s a fab car for us girlies too. It has a good size boot and like most hatchbacks you can fold the back seats flat

which is great to get more shopping bags in, or if like me you have children you have plenty of room for them too. See - you don’t have to have a boring car just because you’re a mum! There’s plenty of room too for sunglasses, drink holders etc. and the seats are really comfortable. They make you feel safe when driving as they seem to fold around you. This car looks and feels very sporty and it’s easy to go a bit too fast without knowing it! I love the colour as black and silver do seem a little too common now – it’s great to stand out from the crowd. The model I test drove, had the ‘octane pack’ which comprises of loads of lovely little extras… ‘black chrome’ finished headlights, dark tinted rear side windows and rear window, rear parking aid with body coloured rear

bumper, cruise control/speed limiter, electric folding door mirrors, electrochrome rear view mirror, directional headlights, tyre pressure sensors, automatic lights and wipers, dual-zone climate control air conditioning and athermic windscreen - all this for as little as £1000 extra! This sexy little devil starts at £15,495 so it won’t break the bank either, so get yourself down to Marshall Peugeot in Peterborough and take one out for a 24hour test drive. I’m sure once you’ve done that you’ll want one. Thanks to Shaun Pluck at Marshall Peugeot for the loan of the car… I’ve told the husband to put some savings to one side ready! Shirley Frost

MOTORING WHEELS

BODY WITH A SAINTLY PRICE

The summer’s coming and we thought it would be good to check out the city’s favourite lunchtime spot for a bit of peace and tranquillity - after all, it’s all about the look with the Tigra Air. After finding the right catwalk we put our model to the test, top on or off we thought she looked great both ways. The roof goes back within a few seconds and the best thing about a hard top is that it still feels like a proper car when it’s up and you haven’t got any wind buffeting the roof. That means you can actually hear your music and sing along (not necessarily great if it’s me singing!), plus it’s more durable. This little coupe is great for two and a perfect girlie car, but if like me you need a bit more space then I’d recommend the Astra Twin Top as this has four seats but you still have that sporty feel too.

The interior of the Tigra Air feels good and you have a large storage space behind the seats. The boot is OK and you can still use it when the roof is down. If you’re planning a big shopping trip though girls, there’s not that much space! Beneath the good looks this car’s low profile tyres give you a sense of control, impressive grip and superb ride comfort. The model I test drove was a Tigra 1.4 Air and this starts at £9,995 (terms and conditions apply). I’d like to say a big thank you to Joe and his team at Marshall Vauxhall Peterborough for the loan of the car… it was fun while it lasted! Shirley Frost

SCENE

Tony Stephens has the ESP guide to the hot new releases…

IRON MAN OUT THIS MONTH

Out: May 2

Tony Stark is a little different to other comic book heroes; prior to deciding to wear their pants on the outside, they’re usually tortured souls and underdogs. However, Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a multi-millionaire living the high life, and it’s not until he’s kidnapped, forced to build a WMD and has somebody sacrifice their life to help him escape that he changes. He wants to help others, but rather than donate to charity he utilises his wealth to develop pants he can wear on the outside. They’re hi-tech though, and star in a movie that should at least provide an enjoyable distraction until the new Batman is released.

SPEED RACER Out: May 9

This may be coming from the Wachowski brothers of The Matrix fame, but aside from a dash of Kung Fu and Anime influence this is completely different. Most of the action takes place on the racetrack, the colours are bright and vivid, and check out these character names: Speed Racer (of course), Mom Racer, Pops Racer, Racer X, Inspector Detector and Chim Chim the chimpanzee. Brilliant. This seems to have ‘fun’ written all over it, but I don’t think this is for the same crowd as that aforementioned cyberpunk action classic.

DVD SCENE CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR

GAME ON

BOOM BLOX

(Wii) Out: May 9 Another Spielberg release for this month, though it lacks any archaeology based action. Instead he’s presented us with a reversal of the popular party game Jenga, where instead of trying to dismantle the tower one brick at a time without letting it topple over, you fling a ball at it and try to cause as much destruction as possible. Hundreds of levels offer you instant gratification without labelling you a party pooper.

Out: May 5

Based on the true story of how the unlikely trio of playboy congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks), a CIA agent (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and a socialite (Julia Roberts) manage to drum up enough support to help a 1980’s Afghanistan fight off its Soviet invaders. A satirical comedy that’s as entertaining as it is informative.

WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY Out: May 12

Walk Hard is a spoof of the musical biopic genre, making fun of films such as Walk the Line and Ray, in a style closer to Airplane than This is Spinal Tap. Dewey lives out every rock ‘n’ roll cliché in the book, and encounters stars such as Elvis, Bob Dylan and The Beatles along the way. It’s from the same bunch behind Knocked Up and Superbad, but it’s far sillier, and as such does not stand out from the comedic crowd as well, but that doesn’t mean it won’t give you a good laugh.

ROCK BAND

SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET Out: May 19

After 15 years of imprisonment Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) returns to the crazy town of London, intent on exacting revenge upon the Judge that sentenced him unjustly and took away his wife and daughter. What follows is a tale of death and adoption, love triangles and love rectangles, back stabbing, throat cutting, hair trimming and pies that taste like Sacha Baron Cohen. And strangest of all, people keep bursting into song, seemingly at random! Ah, because this is a musical too. Apparently Johnny Depp had been too shy to sing before this film, but director Tim Burton insisted he give it a go. Still, even if he’s no Sinatra, give the guy a break and just enjoy the show.

50

www.e s p3 .ne t ( M ay )

www.

d ont s cr ap t h et ap . co m

(Release dates are subject to change).

(XBOX 360) Out: May 23 Although this will be one of the best party games out there, it’s hard to recommend as it’s also one of the most expensive. The disc goes for £50, which is standard for a 360 game, but the catch is that to actually play it properly you’ll need to buy the instruments (guitar, drums and microphone) separately for £130. Ouch. Hopefully it’ll have dropped in price by the time the Xmas holidays come round, as that’s when you’d probably get the most out of it anyway.

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL Out: May 23

I’d usually be a little suspicious and certainly less than optimistic if a favourite old movie (or series of movies) was to receive a sequel after a decade or two had passed. The Indiana Jones trilogy is near perfect as it is, and could be left alone and remain so. But I think you really should be getting excited about Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (despite the rubbish title). Why? It’s directed by Steven Spielberg, it has THAT music by John Williams, Harrison Ford still does most of his own stunts and surprisingly, for a film with George Lucas involved it uses a minimal amount of CGI to maintain the look and feel of the classic movies. Forget all your Tomb Raiders and National Treasures; Indy’s back to whip bored movie audiences into shape!

STREET KINGS MOVIE REVIEW Out: May 23

‘Training Day’ scriber and ‘Harsh Times’ director David Ayer brings us yet another James Ellroy adaptation in the shape of heavyweight crime thriller – ‘Street Kings’.

You’re more than just a number to

us!

Ellroy’s original tale is the basis of our story involving Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves), a boozing LA cop who shoots first and asks questions later, but after the murder of a former partner, Ludlow becomes a suspect and begins to question the tight knit police force he’s been a part of for so long. Street Kings throws up no shocks, from its ending to its leading man the film lacks any kind of surprises, and while Ayer gives us an entertaining and action-packed romp he receives no favours from Reeves who is as wooden as ever. On the plus side the film does include favourable support from the likes of Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie and Chris Evans and it certainly has its moments but if you were hoping for another ‘L.A. Confidential’, ‘Kings’ will disappoint. Rating

COLUMN Andy

Slater andy.slater@espmag.co.uk

Peterborough guitarist Gizz Butt is a local hero. He’s toured the world with the Prodigy and now his own band, The More I See, have their CD stuck to the front of a national mag. ESP’s Andy Slater gets to grips with Gizz in his latest music profile… he’s not defensive of this situation he’s proud of it. He is however fully committed to his band The More I See, whose new album The Unholy Feast was stuck loud and proud to the front of Metal Hammer magazine last month and is in the stores now. “It’s the album I’ve had in my head since 1983. I have finally had the right blend of musicians and people around me to produce it.” back and look through things. I’ve used them in lyrics for songs. It’s also like an anchor for me, keeps me sane, it’s good to look back and see where I’ve been.” For someone who belies his years his tenacity is impressive. So what drives him? “I’ve got to finish things,” Gizz tells me. “It’s like a force within me to keep going ‘til it’s finished, I can’t stand frayed edges. People told me that if you haven’t made it by 21 you won’t. I kept trying, pushing. I got the Prodigy gig at thirty…”

There are many people in and around the city who have various opinions and thoughts on Gizz Butt - some of them founded and some unfounded. Having known him for around ten years I have my own and during the conversation I had with him for this article I learned more about where he is now and how his experiences have shaped him. His home is not a shrine to his career but a family home with only a few pointers to the fame he’s achieved, the odd platinum disc here, the odd MTV award there, a reflection on what is important to him. “I’ve always written things down in diaries and books, a ‘brain book’ I call it. It can be anything, a phrase, a statement, a band name or just an observation I’ve made. It’s great to go

52

That heady time performing with the Prodigy on the Fat of the Land tour is well documented. Like others who’ve joined big name bands on worldwide tours filling the vacuum afterwards was hard and expensive, both financially and emotionally. It wasn’t until a good friend in Bruce Dickinson of Little Angels (not Iron Maiden) told him - “Go back to your teaching that’s what you did before, that’s what you do now,” that he got back on an even keel and resumed giving guitar lessons. The real thing that strikes me about Gizz now is how he’s maturing into his role as a father and a family man, moving out of the city centre has helped. I broach the subject of arrogance and his prima donna reputation, of which he is aware. “The trouble is everybody wants you to come to this gig, go to that night, help out here do a gig there,” he tells me. “I can’t do loads of stuff like that anymore, I have a family. Trouble is when you say no, they think you’re being arrogant. It’s not that, I have other responsibilities these days which I am taking seriously, I have two young children.” The pleasing thing within this statement is that

d ont s cr ap t h et ap . co m

Another testament to his humility is the fact that he considers everyone in his band and management just as important as himself in getting the album done: “Everyone has to be together, it’s like a wheel, one piece not quite right and the tyre goes flat,” a typical Gizz analogy but you get the picture. He is without doubt a gifted guitarist. He’s been there and done it, my own guess is that a lot of the flack he’s received in the past is out and out green-eyed jealousy. If I had my foot on a monitor playing guitar to 125,000 people in the biggest band in the world at the time, I would be full of it, who wouldn’t? Oh yeah, those that are green eyed and jealous wouldn’t be… liars! He will soon be wandering off to the States to play guitar with friend Andy Sneap’s band Sabatt - New York, Chicago Los Angeles and Springfield (no Simpson jokes please ) not bad for a spring tour eh? So how do I sum him up? Tortured genius? Arrogant show off? Neither, he’s a man coming to terms with the responsibility of family life whilst still striving to achieve the best in everything he does. He is quite simply one of the best rock and metal guitarists this country has ever produced and as a city we should be proud of that. By the way …he plays a mean lick of the Blues too! If you want to book Guitar lessons call him on 01733 700318 - my mate Rob does and he says it’s worth the money just to watch Gizz play! Andy Slater

ROOTS FESTIVAL FEVER

WANTED: KEYBOARD PLAYER FOR THE BRINK

Hands up who clocked these guys on Britain’s Got Talent recently? The guys from local fourpiece Rock/Pop band, The Brink, fresh from their ITV appearance and bid for fame are now looking for a keyboard player to join their ranks. If your CV says you’re between 19 and 28 years of age, have excellent piano/keyboard skills, can sing, have your own transport and are based in Cambridgeshire… you’ve got the job… unless you’re really ugly, that is! But even if you’re ugly, if you have experience writing original music and can bring new and exciting ideas to the band, then they’ll still consider you, especially if you have your own keys and have the drive to be in a successful band. Matt from The Brink told me – “We’ve had a few keyboard players in the past who’ve let us down due to other commitments (i.e. university, big weekends away), so we’re only looking for someone who is serious about playing in a band. We’ve got two big festivals coming up in the Summer, playing to 20,000+ people, so we need someone to start soonest.” For more info email Matt mj_strafford@yahoo.co.uk or phone 07791 280017.

The Brays have been on and tell us they’ve sexed things up and have brought in local model Kelly Bell to star in their new big budget video for their new single ‘Sin’. Not content with just Kelly’s assets they’re now on the search for four dancers to appear in the video as well and are auditioning at Radius on Sunday May 11. I understand our Man About Town Pep Cipriano is on the judging panel but don’t let that hold you back girls! The Brays are hoping to get as high up in the charts as possible and we’re right behind the lads. Contact them on thebrays@hotmail.co.uk to arrange audition time. www.myspace.com/thebraysband

THE UNHOLY FEAST

The More I See have just released their second album, 'The Unholy Feast' through Transcend Media (April 28). The Peterborough band’s made history by becoming the first Heavy Metal act to physically give away their whole album! This is being given away with the May edition of Metal Hammer magazine. The More I See will be having an album launch party and will also be playing at the Stamford Riverside Festival on July 5 but before then you can catch them at the new Peterborough Live Lounge on King Street on May 16. www.themoreisee.com

THE KEY TO ART & SOUL

Following on from the success of the recent ‘Thorpe Hall Hospice Presents’ CD and its launch party at Radius… both of which I had the pleasure of being personally involved with… our friends at Art & Soul magazine are helping the cause further by joining with The Key Theatre to host an evening of live music to raise much needed funds for the local hospice. The event on Thursday May 22 sees four great local bands taking to the stage, including Angryman, The Surgens, The Brays and Opaque. For more information on how to get hold of tickets, check out the websites below. www.myspace.com/thorpehallpresents www.myspace.com/artandsoulgig

Rumour has it there are plans to hold a music festival on the embankment this year on August 2 - 3… provisionally named ‘City Roots’, it looks to be a collaboration between the city council and the Muddy Promotions team and likely to go some way to replace what was The Willow Festival held until a few years ago. There’ll be three stages featuring mainly local original bands plus craft stalls, food and fairground rides. While on the subject of festivals, I hear that Randall Rootz Community Music is planning the Randall Rootz Festival Mk2 for mid-August. Following the huge success of last year’s efforts, the team are looking to build on their reputation of putting on a totally independent music and arts festival in the city. Watch this space for more details of both festivals as news comes in. Prior to both of these, however, comes the Peterborough Trades Union Council May Day Festival on Saturday May 3 at Radius club on Northminster and Sunday May 4 at The Cherry Tree on Oundle Road (see bands in Gig Guide). www.muddypromotions.org.uk www.randallrootz.org

JOHN LITCHFIELD

Mr John Litchfield launches his long-awaited EP at The Glass Onion on Saturday May 31. As there’s not much of a biog on his MySpace, I can’t tell you any more about this man, other than to say that there is an awesome set of preview tracks on the site, which will get your toes tapping and head nodding in seconds… I can’t wait for this gig! www.myspace.com/johnlitchfield

NEW EP FOR MIDWEZT

They’ll be flogging plenty of merchandise on the night including CDs of course, T-shirts, badges and the like. www.myspace.com/midwezt1

MARSHALL DODGE SPONSORS OF THE PETERBOROUGH SAXONS

e h t e v o l “I game!” James Ussery

If you haven’t heard of the Peterborough Saxons then you soon will do. They’re our local American football team who’ve just kicked off a brand new season and are set on promotion. ESP’s Liam Papworth met the team and veteran player James Ussery… Playing beyond the years could arguably be seen as an understatement in the case of Peterborough Saxons’ James Ussery, who at the age of 50 refuses to hang up his boots because of his love for the game. The offensive line player was introduced to American football back in 1968 by his father and has felt an affection and passion for the sport ever since. James has an interesting history, before coming here to England he joined the American military and was in it for 20 years; he told ESP that his experience in the military teaches you a lot, not only in life but out on the field of play as well. “I think being in the military will help you stay disciplined. With any type of team structure there’s got to be some discipline; you’ve got to follow the leader, you’ve got to follow directions, and you’ve got to be willing to buy into a team concept.” While Ussery’s age has proven to be no stumbling block in getting himself into the squad he revealed his motivation was to do good for the team and how it was never his intention to become a bit part player for The Saxons. “It’s important to be at my age and still be able to compete,” said James “I wasn’t going to come out here and just make up the numbers or be terrible, if I was going to be terrible then I wouldn’t have played, so I’m convinced and the guys are convinced that I can compete at this level. I still have some skills.” Last year Argos revealed they sold more than 12,000 replica American footballs which shows just how the game is gaining fans in this country. Ussery admits he’s noticed a change in people’s attitudes towards the sport since he came to England and hopes that teams like The Saxons can encourage more people to take part. “The goal is like David Beckham going to the States and trying to teach our guys world football, we want to see more English people coming into the American gridirons. It’s good to have Americans but you want to

60

www.

d ont s cr ap t h et ap . co m

integrate more English people and when I came here like 30 years ago, English people didn’t really have an interest in gridiron football, they thought it was kinda sissy.

The Peterborough Saxons are sponsored by:

“But now it’s good to see young lads and young ladies as well wearing American football jerseys and also we’ve got our youth team going, it would be nice to see more people interested in American football.” After a strong season last year and only just missing out on promotion, Ussery feels that reaching the next division is a realistic target for the Peterborough Saxons, who’ve been backed by sponsors Marshall Dodge, and believes they have a strong enough team to fulfil those aspirations. “This team is a good team; I haven’t been with the group as long as some of the other guys but from what I can see the club’s got a strong foundation. Last season was a building block but this season you take another step and then next season hopefully we’ll take another step.” His coach, Mark Kerr believes players like James Ussery bring much to the game and that age should never be a problem when playing the sport. “If you’re in shape and athletic and skilled enough, age needn’t necessarily be an obstacle to play,” Mark told ESP. “Guys like James who are playing beyond the years bring infectious enthusiasm that raises the whole spirit around the club.” If you fancy seeing James and the rest of the guys fight for promotion then go down and check them out. The Saxon’s start the season with three away games before competing in their first home game against the Milton Keynes Pathfinders on May 25 at Stanground College. The team looks more than ready to build on last season’s exploits, but they need you there to cheer them on, so don’t miss them this month – C’mon Saxons! www.thesaxons.co.uk

LOCALSPORT

LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS! WHO’D HAVE THOUGHT WE’D BE CELEBRATING AN OPEN TOP BUS PARADE THROUGH THE CITY TO MARK PETERBOROUGH UNITED’S EXTRAORDINARY ACCOMPLISHMENTS – “UP THE POSH!” Long gone are the days of ‘Big Ron Manager’ or ‘Fry Out!’ Peterborough United is now a team on the up, and even though it seems ages ago since they confirmed their place in League One – the city (and the ESP office) is still buzzing.

ESP’s always followed the club’s progress in the magazine and were as excited as anyone when the result came through. An almighty roar could be heard around the office, and yes, we did go out and celebrate with a few, umm… lemonades. Well, it wouldn’t be right not to…

In the last few weeks the Peterborough fans have all had a reason to celebrate thanks to Darren Ferguson and his boys clinching an automatic promotion spot and we just want to say - “Well done lads!”

Somebody equally as excited as us was manager Darren Ferguson who told ESP how he felt after earning promotion.

It’s a fantastic achievement for a club that has gone through its hard times, but all that has now been forgotten, and so it should be – The Posh deserve a lot of credit.

“It’s been a fantastic season and I’m a very proud man because the players have been superb. I have to give praise to my management staff who’ve been first class and of course the supporters who’ve stuck by me. I know when I was appointed a few fans were a bit sceptical but they

ESP JOINS POSH OPEN DAY It’s been a busy time for Posh which began a few weeks back, prior to the big win, with an open day that attracted thousands of fans to London Road, and ESP of course.

As well as giving audiences the chance to purchase season tickets for the eagerly awaited 2008/09 campaign, the new Adidas kit was also unveiled in the club shop. The ESP Dance Crew performed throughout the day, Face of ESP Kerry Bates made an appearance as did Posh chairman, Darragh MacAnthony and CEO Bob Symms, who held a fans forum Q&A session. Guests were also treated to a stadium tour plus the players spent over three hours in the sponsors’ lounge signing autographs and posing for photos.

have always backed me and their support has been crucial in the run-in. “The fans were superb and it was great to see them enjoying themselves after the final whistle. The dressing room was a good place to be afterwards and there was certainly a party atmosphere on the coach journey home.” This has been a season that the city will not forget in a hurry, clinching promotion is an unbelievable feat and here at ESP we’re already dreaming of The Premier League.

DOWNLOAD POSH WE ARE!

Peterborough are pushing for another top slot… they’re hoping for a Top 40 single this month after a local collaborative group came together to re-release the anthem ‘Posh We Are’. The group’s made up of the Voyager school, The Free Kicks Foundation, professional band The Lightyears and Peterborough United Football Club and all funds raised are going straight to charity. Steve Thorpe from The Free Kicks Foundation told ESP: “I came up with the idea to re-release 'Posh We Are' earlier this year as a new way of raising money for Free Kicks. Posh have been so successful this season I thought it would be great to have an updated version of the song to tie-in with the new era at the club since the arrival of Darragh MacAnthony. What has happened since then has been amazing.” The song’s available now for download from sites such as iTunes and Napster. www.PoshWeAre.co.uk www.myspace.com/FreeKicksFoundation
