Anna Ruggiero brings you our ESP guide to the best shows around… ALADDIN AT THE KEY THEATRE

Photo: Chris Brudenell

With everything you expect from a Key Theatre pantomime, this year’s production is returning with an all singing, all dancing month of music, madness and a lantern full of magic!

LET’S GO TO OZ! This year the Cresset brings us panto lovers a wonderful production of the Wizard of Oz, adapted from the book with some fun twists and turns. Running from December 12 - December 30, we can look forward to a bit of celebrity dazzle to the show in the form of ex Coronation Street star Steve Arnold who’ll be playing the Scarecrow. Steve told ESP: “I want to bring warmth to the Scarecrow, which is really important in pantomime, and as he doesn’t have a brain, I got the part straight away! “Panto is great fun and if you’re having fun, then so will the audience. Do I get nervous before? Yes, I do, but that’s good – you need to use that. The adrenalin keeps you up there and I’m sure there’ll be many funny moments in this show.” So head to the Cresset in Bretton for what looks to be another year of show-stopping fun offering all the fabulous entertainment we’ve come to expect with these productions. Read our full interview with the cast on www.espmag.co.uk. Tickets are available on 01733 265705.

This is the story of Aladdin, the poor boy who finds fame and fortune thanks to a genie in a magic lamp. Magic, adventure, excitement and of course plenty of local references are always a major part of panto at the Key, together with an abundance of slapstick, humour, music and spectacle and this story has it all. Running from Thursday December 3 - Sunday January 3, this is one show not to be missed. Ticket prices start from £10 and are available on 01733 207239.

CHRISTMAS @ SACREWELL

Time to visit Santa at Sacrewell – he’s been described by some visitors as “Best Father Christmas ever” and he’s ready to see if you’ve been naughty or nice! He’s settled in at the old farm house by the roaring fire and kids will hop on tractor ride to visit him and will be entertained as they wait their turn. This year to combat long queues they’ve reduced the number of children on each tractor ride. The kids will love the Living Nativity in the Animal Village, the refurbished mill will be decorated for a Wartime Christmas and the Playbarn will be open with Origin8 serving hot drinks and snacks. Santa is now there at weekends and then daily from December 19 – 24. It costs £9 per child to include a tractor ride, visit to Father Christmas, and farm entry (concessions for members and under twos) and adults pay normal farm admission. Call 01780 782254 to book your time to see Father Christmas.

SANTA’S BACK @ NENE VALLEY RAILWAY Santa is back at the Nene Valley Railway just off the A1 at Stibbington near Peterborough from now until Christmas Eve. The jolly Gentleman will be hosting the festivities with a little help from the Railway staff and a great big steam train! He'll be around every weekend and Wednesday plus the Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (Christmas Eve) of Christmas week. Booking is essential on www.nvr.org.uk and 01780 784444.

LIGHTS OF LOVE CAROL SANTA STROLL CONCERT AND RUN If you’re looking to add a bit of festive cheer to exercise next month then how about signing up for the 5k Santa Stroll and Run on Sunday December 20. Entrants receive a free Santa suit on the day and Ferry Meadows Country Park will be covered in a sea of red as hundreds take a stroll or run the 5k route. It starts at 11am and proceeds go towards the Peterborough Dementia Action Alliance, which is a partnership of local organisations working to support people to live well with dementia. Entries can be made online at www.pdaa.org.uk, by post or by picking up an entry form from the Visitor Information Centre on Bridge Street in Peterborough. Adult entry is £15 and £10 for children aged 5 to 14. Family entry (two adults and two children) is £45. For more details email Dick Hughes on hughes1937@btinternet.com or call 01778 348434.

Carols, fireworks and mulled wine will all feature at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice’s traditional Lights of Love concert this month. But the centre piece will, as usual, be the giant Christmas tree decked out with handwritten messages of love, remembrance and inspiration. For thousands of people across the area, Lights of Love has become a key event in the festive calendar, offering the chance to take time out of the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparation to remember loved ones.

CHRISTMAS DOWN ON THE FARM! Christmas is coming to Pigeons Farm and here’s the low down on all the fun that’s happening on the farm this December. On Sunday December 6, get ready for lots of fun in the shape of Christmas shopping, carol singing and of course Santa, at the Pigeons Farm Christmas market. Carols can be enjoyed by everyone on Sunday December 13 for the Fenlands Family Church evening at the barn. From December 10 - December 17, there’s the fun Christmas tea party with Santa and Friends which can be enjoyed from 4 - 6pm.

This year’s carol concert will take place on Sunday December 13 in the gardens of Thorpe Hall in Longthorpe, Peterborough, with the mansion house as the backdrop. Doors will open at 5pm with the carol singing beginning at 5.30pm.

If that wasn’t enough, visitors to the farm can enjoy breakfast with Santa, a magical morning of breakfast, crackers, mince pies and presents running from December 12 - December 20.

During the event, which is free to attend, Thorpe Hall’s Chapel will be open and the hospice’s books of remembrance will be available to view.

For more info visit www.pigeonsfarm.co.uk.

The farm will be closed for Christmas from December 20 until January 2.

PETERBOROUGH LIGHTS S CITY CENTRE LIGHTS UP WITH LOUIS Thousands turned out to see local Olympic hero Louis Smith MBE turn on the Christmas lights display in the city centre.

Afterwards Louis sold calendars and posed for selfies in the town hall until 7pm. ESP grabbed a word and you can read our interview with Louis on www.espmag.co.uk Hundreds of pounds were raised for the Mayor’s charities from festive stalls in the town hall, the Mayor’s mince pie reception and sales of Louis Smith’s new calendar.

Louis is famous for his gymnastic skills but also his dance moves since winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2012 and he demonstrated a few salsa steps on stage.

It features the story of the Nativity told by young children, using theatre and singing with audience participation throughout.

There’s a new and improved Santa’s Grotto, set within a giant tree of lights, just outside John Lewis, now open daily until Christmas Eve. Grotto tickets are available on arrival and tickets cost £5 per child (which includes a present).

A lantern parade around the centre led by Santa and his elves with the Classical Reflection Choirs launched the festivities.

ENJOY

Classical Reflection Choirs from Discovery Primary School and Werrington Primary were followed by a great dance performance by Gemz Diamondz who have auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent! A new Toys R Us store has just opened at the centre, there are several new pop up stores and there’s free parking and late night opening every night.

The Business Workers’ and Shoppers’ Carols takes place on Tuesday December 22 at 1pm with traditional Christmas carol singing at lunchtime. This 30 to 40 minute event is followed by mulled wine and mince pies for those who have time to stay. All are welcome. SEXUAL CELERY STICK IS NEW WINGMAN

Researchers in Chicago say the fragrance omitted by eating celery is a natural aphrodisiac for women. To think I wasted years taking girls out for a drink when I’d have been better dating them at the allotment.

MY WORD OF THE MONTH

FESTIVE

We do it best in the UK don’t we? Muffin tops in minus 1 degrees, office romps, enough food to feed a small African country, family feuds, unwrapping cartoon socks, another murder in Eastenders, Superman II, cheap crackers, decorations up in November, country’s productivity at a standstill, pine needles everywhere but on the tree and everyone asking that annoying question: “Are you ready for Christmas?”

DIARY DATE WITH A LOCAL TWIST

WILL I BE THE NEXT MILK TRAY MAN? I’ve only gone and done it and applied to be the new black-clad hero with a soft centre who likes to sneak into ladies’ bedrooms to deliver chocolates. Yes, to mark the selection box’s 100th anniversary Cadbury are scouring the country to find a modern-day hero who can carry off the iconic black polo neck and become the new Milk Tray Man.

According to the person specification the next Milk Tray Man will need to ‘thrive with adventure, welcome the limelight and above all else go the extra mile to make a certain someone feel special.’ Cadbury, you’re looking at him – I’m your new guy with the mysterious calling card…

JOSEPH’S DREAM COAT OF PAINT You can’t get better praise than this from Lord Sugar: “Joseph, you are staying whatever happens.” And rightly so. In what was his best performance to date, Peterborough’s candidate for The Apprentice Josepth Valente was given the boardroom seal of approval after taking the initiative to lead on handyman tasks when project manager Elle crumbled from the start. Her lack of leadership signalled her downfall but our Joey wasn’t prepared to join her. His natural survival instincts kicked in and he inspired the team to complete the theatre basement

CIAOS OUT > 14

www.espmag.co.uk

decorating task with consummate direction and assertiveness. In the boardroom Lord Sugar was quick to praise him for practically steering a sinking ship to safety, which in turn guaranteed his own protection. Joey’s demonstrated he possesses numerous skills that are required in business, which I’m sure he uses in his everyday livelihood. He’s not afraid to get his hands dirty and has to be a frontrunner for being crowned as this year’s Apprentice. But it’s getting tougher and he’ll need eyes in the back of his head. Forza Joey!

I’ve just treated myself to my perfect Christmas present. Perfect because I like reading about myself and being listed in the DayBy-Day Peterborough Desk Diary 2016 is just a formality. For me it’s bedtime reading at its best but the problem is, I’m not in it. Presumably former colleague and author Simon Potter is saving one of my many achievements and services to the community for the 2017 version?! So, if you want to find out how Rinaldo Fasulo gets a mention (while I don’t) and which Woodston pub Engelbert Humperdinck performed in or what the connection a Gladstone Street family had with the Titanic was, then be sure to get yourself a copy. This is obviously no ordinary desk diary, as it’s packed with more than a thousand Peterborough-related anniversaries, typically about three for each day of the year. And it's not just about the usual suspects such as Katharine of Aragon, John Clare and Edith Cavell – and Rinaldo Fasulo. It’s kind of a Steve Wright’s ‘factoids’ but for Peterborough, which makes it the perfect Chrimbo pressie for anyone who lives or has ever lived in our city. But above all it doesn’t miss the point of what a diary is for and there’s plenty of space to write all your appointments for 2016. There are loads of facts about Peterborough and links to the city I never knew but perhaps the one that sticks out in my mind is that Adrian Lyne, director of Fatal Attraction, 9 1/2 Weeks, Flashdance, Indecent Proposal and Jacob’s Ladder was born in Peterborough in 1941. He even directed a Milk Tray Man advert! The diary is also accompanied by a sort of odd promotional video (search for The Peterborough Diary on YouTube). I got my copy from the Visitor Information Centre in Bridge Street or go to www.peterboroughdiary.com.

>> Edmund N. – don’t forget Gables info >> Dave – half a lemon cheesecake again? >> Lettuce – you in town for Chrimbo? >> Chris B. – did she like the chocolates? >> Lenny – what happened to the t-shirt? >> Tom – you my new handyman now?

CLASSICAL REFLECTION ARE REACHING FOR THE STARS

Photos: Tim Steele @ Studio One

Anna Ruggiero catches up with the singing twins from Longthorpe, Classical Reflection, to discuss Christmas concerts, albums and Marmite…

I

’ve seen the girls perform on the popular BBC singing competition The Voice, I’ve seen the girls perform live at the John Clare Theatre on Broadway, Peterborough, so I was already aware of their exceptional talent, but meeting the girls in person was a great chance to find out more about this talented duo and it was clear to see why people have taken them in to their hearts. So, ladies, gentlemen and ESP readers, without further ado, I give you Hannah and Naomi Moxon of Classical Reflection. ESP, and myself, are huge fans of Classical Reflection and have eagerly followed their promising career, which although still in its early days, looks set to stand the test of time. The talented identical twins made it through to the battle rounds on The Voice and since then, they have completely embraced the experience.

16

www.espmag.co.uk

They both thoroughly love what they’re doing, have won an army of adoring fans (count us in on that), played at sell-out concerts and if that’s not enough, they have released an EP and have a Christmas concert and album coming up! It was a delight to catch up with the happy girls, enjoy an apple juice at a local café and chat about their lives. The girls excitedly told me:“It’s been like a dream! We are enjoying ourselves so much and are truly grateful for the experience and the support from our fans. “The Voice was an amazing experience and one that we’ve really embraced, shows like this are a great platform for artists. “Classical music is a really strong genre and we love being able to add our own twist to popular classical songs.”

Their eagerly awaited album, The Vow, will be released early next year (don’t worry, we’ll tell you when), and includes eight songs carefully handpicked by the girls. I know how much thought goes into selecting their songs. One of my fondest memories when watching them perform, was how they guided the audience with a brief description as to why they’d chosen the song they were about to perform. This was a beautiful touch and really showed their connection to their songs and the music. If you can’t wait until their album, don’t worry, you can enjoy the release of their Christmas EP of three Christmas songs plus The Living Years available now by downloading from Amazon, iTunes or Spotify. It will also be available to buy at the girls’ Christmas concert on Sunday December 13 where you can catch Classical Reflection performing live at The Marriot Hotel in Peterborough.

For more information, to shop or buy tickets for the concert visit www.classicalreflection.co.uk or you can buy them from the Peterborough Tourist Information Centre on Bridge St, 01733 452336.

Fun facts Their second career choice other than singing would be to work in Pets at Home as they have an exceptional love for animals! They both love Marmite. They share a best friend called Rachel.

The Crab & Winkle is heading into a new year with a new look and new management set on putting this village pub at the heart of the community. Charlie, the Crab & Winkle’s new landlady

C

harlie and David have years of experience running pubs around the country and have already made plenty of changes.

The pub’s recent refurbishment has transformed the place with a light and airy contemporary feel that’s much more welcoming. If you haven’t visited for a while just check out the changes – light wood, trendy lamp shades, all new furniture and a complete redecoration, it’s looking good! “We’re really excited to hear what people think and keen to hear from customers what they would like to see,” says Charlie. “We aim to make this a family friendly pub where everyone is welcome to come and enjoy good food and good drinks and to make it a community hub.” During the day it’s fresh and bright and proving just as popular for the tea/coffee and cake offer for £2.99 as for its food and beer. In the

18

evenings a lovely fireplace will be great for cosy evenings snuggled up with a brandy.

You can even pop in for a quick sandwich, chips and a drink for just £5.99 Monday to Saturday.

As well as offering the Greene King beers the team have just received the Cask Marque certificate of excellence for their real ales so you know you’ll get a quality pint and they rotate their guest ales so there’s usually something new to sample.

As it’s party season there are plenty of reasons to head for a festive tipple at the Crab & Winkle with a bottle of Prosecco or wine just £8.95. Cheers! There are Christmas party packages too ideal to meet up with friends and celebrate without breaking the bank.

Keen to add to the community atmosphere with entertainment and events they’ve revived the Sunday pub quiz with Aaron and are looking out for more bands to play there. They’re hoping to introduce karaoke nights and come the summer it’ll be BBQ time on the great new patio area.

Sports fans will love the dedicated sports area with big screens able to show two different games at once and techy types will be delighted there are USB ports in the seats. Music lovers can use the Vidimixer music system – just log on to facebook and you can choose the music in the pub!

“We aim to make this a family friendly pub where everyone is welcome...” Quality food is top of their menu and with new chef on board, Michela Herodotou, they have some fantastic meal deals including two meals daily for just £9.99, buy a burger and get any drink for £1 and a tempting Sunday roast with fresh veg and home cooked meat for just £8.29.

It’s that time of year again when we all go Christmas crazy, and for me, the best part is eating delicious food with my favourite people. So for the December issue, I’ve picked a nice selection of eateries you can enjoy dining at with your loved ones during the festive season.

DISCOVER A BEAUTIFUL GEM IN THE COUNTRYSIDE! If you haven’t yet experienced dining at The Kings Arms in Polebrook, you should seriously consider doing so – it’s a beautiful gem in the Northamptonshire countryside. Based in the quaint little village of Polebrook and just a 25 minute drive from Peterborough, The Kings Arms is run by Sharon Booker-Chester and her fantastic team who offer traditional British dining with a Spanish twist. The building itself is stunning – the open fire is a lovely addition this time of year – and the Mediterranean styled conservatory is light and perfect on a sunny day. They’ve managed to weave rustic simplicity with contemporary to offer a relaxed venue serving top notch food that’s beautifully presented and mouth-wateringly delicious. I was also pleased to hear that, where they can, the food is sourced locally from places such as the fantastic Stilton butchers. The wine list offers something for all tastes and I really like the single serve

bottles of Champagne for when you’re in the mood for just one. Okay so let’s talk food. The menu is well-thought out and I’d highly recommend the mixed tapas for two as a starter (pictured) which is a tasty array of peppers, olives, cured meats, aioli (a Spanish garlic mayonnaise) and olive tapanade. This made the perfect starter and you can’t beat sharing a nice plate of food with your dining companion to add to the experience. The Mainplates menu offers wholesome food such as steak, lamb, Catalan fish stew, amongst some tasty vegetarian dishes and you can view the full menu at www.kingsarmspolebrook.co.uk. They’re also now taking bookings for Christmas parties which include a two and three course option and New Year’s Eve looks set to go with a bang too with their fantastic Hogmanay Night and a three-course meal for just £39.50. Call 01832 272363 to book.

MARKS AND SPENCER LAUNCH NEW FOODHALL JUST IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS! Calling all foodies! The refurbished Marks & Spencer Foodhall in Queensgate Shopping Centre is officially open! This year’s festive food highlights include winter berries and prosecco with fizz and sparkle crisps, Christmas sandwiches, British pork, sprout and bacon bangers, haggis, Beluga caviar, parsnip in a pear tree juice and M&S’ own twist on guacamole - the Brusselsmole! That all sounds rather delicious to me and it’s great timing for picking up those little Christmas extras.

CHRISTMAS TIME WITH THE KING OF ROAST DINNERS The Toby Carvery restaurants are well known for their fabulous roast dinners and this December, at the Hampton restaurant, us lucky diners can enjoy a delicious carvery served with a Christmas twist. Diners can look forward to extra Christmas trimmings such as honey roasted parsnips, pigs in blankets and Brussels sprouts (of course). Sean Johnson, restaurant manager, told me: “Toby Carvery restaurants are all about bringing families together and I pride the Hampton restaurant on offering a great experience for all the family alongside serving tasty and wholesome food.” The Festive Fayre menu looks delicious and offers diners a two course lunch from £9.99 and a three course meal for £13.49. As they’re experts in roast dinners, it makes perfect sense

to enjoy Christmas day at the Toby Carvery, where you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome and a three course meal for just £45.99. Tasty options include Severn & Wye smoked salmon with crayfish and prawn cocktail, traditional British roast turkey, followed by classic Christmas pudding served with a rich brandy sauce or custard; it makes sense for your taste buds and the pocket too. We also hear that the Hampton restaurant will be having a full refurbishment ready for Christmas and the plans sound fantastic adding even more comfort and style to the popular restaurant. For more information and to book, you can either use their new online booking service on www.tobycarvery.co.uk or call 01733 565392.

MAKE CHRISTMAS TIME SPECIAL AT THE RAMBLEWOOD INN The scenic Ramblewood Inn at Orton Longueville is now taking bookings for Christmas. Surrounded by trees, it’s a cosy place to dine and the food’s good too! There are five Christmas menus on offer which include a Christmas Lunchtime Carvery, the delicious Christmas Fayre Menu, an all you can eat Boxing Day and New Year’s Day buffet plus a delightful Christmas Day lunch. For more info on opening times and to see the full menus visit www.traditionalinns.co.uk/ramblewood-inn or call 01733 391111.

It’s a Strictly Christmas for local hero Cassidy! Strictly Come Dancing has become as much a part of Christmas as the tin of Quality Street, the festive Radio Times and your Nan falling asleep in the armchair and this year we have even more reason to be glued to the goggglebox. Peterborough’s very own People’s Strictly dance champ Cassidy Little will once again be gracing the dancefloor on the Christmas special! Cassidy from Market Deeping is a former Royal Marine Medic and despite having lost a leg in an explosion whilst serving in Afghanistan he went on to win The People's Strictly for Comic Relief 2015 earlier this year. It was the first time ordinary people had a chance to don the sequins and fake tan and Cassidy followed Peterborough gymnast Louis Smith to become a Strictly winner.

Photo: BBC/Ray Burmiston

Local people couldn’t have been more proud of his incredible paso doble with professional dancer Natalie Lowe and the support was amazing. ESP featured Cassidy and can confirm he’s a great guy so we know who we’ll be rooting for. Six of the most loved Strictly Come Dancing winners and contestants from previous series will return for a festive edition of the nation’s favourite show and add some sparkle to BBC One on Christmas Day.

Wake up Beautiful Every Day

The celebrity ladies and gentlemen rocking around the Strictly Christmas tree along with Cassidy are – model Abbey Clancy bubbly TV presenter Alison Hammond, McFly drummer Harry Judd, TV and Radio presenter Lisa Snowdon and actor Tom Chambers. Cassidy will once again partner Natalie Lowe and all six couples will each perform a magical routine themed around a host of family favourites including Alice in Wonderland, Jack Frost and Scrooge, in a bid to be crowned Christmas champions 2015 and lift the famous Silver Star trophy. And the icing on top of the Christmas cake will be a spectacular music performance from the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey. Following the Grand Final of Strictly Come Dancing 2015, Sir Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly will be back for the annual Christmas Special on BBC One on Christmas Day. The Judges will score each couple for guidance only and the studio audience will decide which couple will win the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special 2015. We know who our votes will be for… go Cassidy!

Movie Previews

Cast: Daisy Ridley, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill Director: JJ Abrams

We never thought it would happen after George Lucas supposedly closed the sixpart saga in 2005 – but now the biggest movie franchise of all-time continues.

Released

Set around thirty years after the events of Return of the Jedi, Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Leia (Carrie Fisher) and their allies face a new threat from the evil lightsaber-wielding Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and his army of Stormtroopers.

Release dates were correct at time going to press but could be subject to change.

DEC

17 VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN

James ‘Professor X’ McAvoy and Daniel ‘Harry Potter’ Radcliffe star in this thrilling twist on the legendary tale, as radical scientist Victor Von Frankenstein and his brilliant protégé Released Igor Strausman DEC respectively. When Victor takes their groundbreaking research into immortality too far, only Igor can bring his friend from the brink of madness.

3

Expect Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and new robot BB-8 to play important roles in the seventh movie in the series, with other old favourites such as Chewbecca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and of course Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker returning – even though his appearance, like most plot points in the film, is shrouded in mystery.

SNOOPY & CHARLIE BROWN: THE PEANUTS MOVIE

Peterborough’s own Warwick Davis will also be showing up as a new character as well – to provide the city with a presence in what should be the biggest film of the year. It will have to go quite a bit to beat Jurassic World, but with JJ Abrams at the helm this should go stratospheric at the box office…

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA

Charlie Brown, his lovable dog companion Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang make their long-awaited Released big-screen debut in DEC this state-of-the-art 3D animation. Charlie embarks upon an epic quest, while Snoopy takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis, the Red Baron.

21

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind) Released puts a new spin on DEC the legendary tale of Moby Dick. In 1820, a ship was assaulted by a vengeful whale of truly mammoth proportions – and this film reveals the harrowing aftermath of the encounter. Chris ‘Thor’ Hemsworth stars alongside new ‘Spider-man’ actor Tom Holland.

Christmas Special Extra

MY PASSPORT X 2TB PORTABLE GAMING HARD DRIVE

The answers to all your gaming storage prayers are here – with Western Digital’s portable hard drive products. With most next-gen consoles starting off with only 500GB of hard drive a lot of gamers have been running out of space, but that needn’t be a problem anymore with the 2TB My Passport X device (which has been specifically designed for Xbox One/360 and PC), or sister product, the My Passport Ultra (available in 1TB and 2TB versions). With just a 1TB version Ultra added onto the Xbox One (to compliment the 500GB internal drive) for example, with 15 full games (including large downloads such as Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Batman: Arkham Knight) and seven massive gaming files (for the likes of Destiny and Far Cry 4) there was still more than half the storage left.

30

www.espmag.co.uk

But the Passport X is the sleek new kid on the block, and with an improved interface designed for the Xbox One (which has a dedicated port and correct firmware) this will hold up to around 50 extra games for the console. The Xbox One console packages (like the new Halo 5: Guardians pack) do now boast 1TB consoles (along with new Playstation 4 offerings) to get around this growing problem of storage. But if you're not starting from scratch, the My Passport products are undoubtedly the best in their field and come highly recommended this Christmas - as X marks the spot.

£14.95

• Any 12” pizza • Two side orders One 500ml tub • of Haagen-Dazs

l ia c e p S s a m t is r h C FALLOUT 4 (X1/PS4/PC)

The first next-gen console version of the award-winning postapocalyptic series of games has finally hit – and boy has it been worth the wait. In this iteration of the game – the first console instalment since 2010’s New Vegas – you enter the nuclear-ravaged world of Boston, Massachusetts, as the sole survivor of Vault 111 after seeing your wife murdered and young child taken. Fallout 4 offers more of the same mutant, raider and deathclaw-fuelled universe that fans will know and love – complete with next-gen spit and polish – with literally hundreds of hours of Pip Boy-inspired questing, perk-building and weapon-making abilities at your disposal as the lone wanderer.

#####

Those who didn’t previously subscribe to this role-playing open world may again struggle here, but for hardcore fans this is an absolute dream – particularly with the addition of the Power Armour suit and inspirational new crafting options – and will consume die-hards for months. War… war never changes.

STAR WARS: BATTLEFRONT (PS4/X1/PC)

CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS III (PS4/X1/PS3/360/PC)

This great-looking multiplayer game – which has the tried-and-tested Battlefield mechanics – sends you to such famous locales as Hoth, Endor and Tatooine, as you fight as either characters from the Rebel Alliance or Empire across several great modes (see Drop Zone and Walker Mode).

It arguably has the most content in the series yet – from the four-player co-op campaign mode to new in-game powers (see killer bee swarms) – with online and Zombie modes being perfectly honed to give it that ultra-smooth complete feel.

With anticipation for The Force Awakens at fever pitch – the best Star Wars game in ages has done the franchise justice.

####

It does scandalously lack a much needed single-player campaign – and some cohesion at times – but is still the perfect gaming accompaniment to the forthcoming film.

Die-hard fans of the series will lap-up this latest action-packed version in the shooter franchise.

#####

As a new breed of Black Ops soldier collides with cuttingedge technology, first-person shooter fans needn’t look anywhere else – with a new multiplayer ranking system being the tasty batter on this COD fillet.

The force is strong with this one.

ASSASSIN’S CREED: SYNDICATE (PS4/X1/PC)

WWE 2K16

With its exploration-based main story/side quests, notable tomb-inspired puzzling elements, and truly entertaining ways of traversing the inspired locales – this treasure hunting adventure has it all. Throw in an emotional core – then this rises to the top among the year’s best.

(PS4/X1/PC) Publisher 2K have learned from their mistakes of last year to arguably provide the best WWE version since 2003’s Here Comes the Pain.

You play as twin assassin siblings as the industrial revolution hits 1868 London – and you must take out the city’s greedy leaders by rallying the underworld to break the corrupt stranglehold on the capital.

The first thing that they get right is an absolutely huge roster – including favourites such as Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, Bad News Barrett and Sheamus – which now boasts, for the first time, NXT grapplers.

Despite inevitable repetition this has a fun and actionpacked main story and excellent Charles Dickens-inspired side missions – which take the stealth-inspired series back to what it does best – and makes this the best AC for years.

Couple this with more intuitive (and less stop-starty) gameplay – despite a few online teething issues – then this delivers a ‘Bull Hammer’ of a blow that truly satisfies.

####

#####

Developers Crystal Dynamics have raised the bar once again for the next generation of Lara Croft fans in this Xbox timedexclusive. This beautifully rendered and truly captivating arena may not be quite as open world as some games – and the combat is still a tad linear – but everything else oozes quality from every pore.

NEED FOR SPEED

(X1/PS4/360/PS3)

After the bug-filled mess that was Unity this is a welcome return to form for the much-loved series – with a distinctly British twist.

RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER (X1/360)

####

After a two-year hiatus this semi-reboot of EA’s stellar driving series is a bit of a mixed bag.

###

It tries so hard to find a new identity – which it seems to have based around the fan-favourite Underground incarnations from ten years or so ago – but falls foul of schoolboy errors.

The Fast: superb visuals, familiar arcade-style handling and nice drift modes. The Infuriating: undersubscribed single-player, hit-and-miss multiplayer and the inability to pause the ‘always online’ gaming mechanics. But there’s still plenty of speeding to enjoy here.

Two conventional rear doors just like the original British Leyland Clubman

TIME TO JOIN THE

CLUBMAN

When I think about it I’ve never really conformed to the masses. At school instead of lunching on jam sandwiches I’d be tucking into a mortadella and prosciutto roll. In my teens it was all about listening to Nirvana while I stuck to The Housemartins. I didn’t go on to work at Pearl Assurance or settle down in my 30s. The MINI Clubman shares my DNA. It treads a different path. It appeals to the driver who refuses to conform to a Ford Focus, Audi A3, VW Golf or even a BMW 1 Series. The type of person behind the wheel of a Clubman sniffs out a slice of novelty, style and uniqueness. They want to stand out from the crowd and owning a Clubman allows them to. Earlier this year my Man About Town sponsors Sycamore MINI handed me the keys to the new MINI John Cooper Works. The car was a technological masterpiece and I’ve been pining for it ever since. It was a proper baptism to the MINI brand and I have to say I’m tempted. This time they were in a tamer mood and suggested I got to know the second generation Clubman, which has just been launched. Admittedly at first glance I struggled to get excited. I’m a full blown petrol head and I’m not happy unless I’m darting as quickly as I can from A to B whether it be on four wheels or two. So, the Clubman had one job – to change my mind-set. It was almost like, “Tonight Matthew I’m going to

34

www.espmag.co.uk

be…” I had to be someone else and drive like that someone else would. And credit where it’s due, the Clubman did a job on me. I actually rather liked it. Looks #### First things first, the new Clubman is bigger than its predecessor. It’s longer and fatter inside and out which means extra luggage space and more planted handling. But although she’s looking all grown up she still has enough curves and cheekiness to draw a smile each time you walk up to her. The exterior design is largely derived from the hatchback but it’s at the rear where the most significant change has occurred. The rear-hinged door from the old model has been scrapped in favour of two conventional rear doors just like the original British Leyland Clubman from back in the day. The best thing about them is they open on their own at the touch of a button or, on this model, by waggling your foot below the rear bumper and then you look like a magician!

Inside ##### The cabin in this Clubman is its jewel in the crown. You’ll be hard pushed to find another car on the market with a £20k starting price tag that makes you feel so welcome, safe and overwhelmed in a good way. Granted, this model was furnished with the everpopular Chili Pack and was bursting at the seams with trick bits but the Clubman in naked guise still packs a standard equipment punch. Standard kit includes climate control, cruise control, sat-nav, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, keyless start and aircon. Inside is quality all round and the best optional extra for me are the excellent leather heated seats that toasted my bum and lower back to perfection. Ride ##### The way this car drives can be summed up in one word: civilised. I felt like a cross between an on-call doctor making his way to an appointment and a stay-at-home dad on a school run. The ride is calming and comfortable. The Clubman is a family car and a perfect long distance cruiser, which is purposefully not wired up like the MINI

Pep Cipriano

hatchback but the blueprint still lies beneath. It’s still alert (especially in sport mode) and the chassis helps to reassure you with enough feel and poise when you’re driving through the motions. Best of all the Clubman strikes a balance between a planted ride and suspension that’s forgiving over less smoother surfaces. Performance #### All the engines in the new Clubman range come with a standard six-speed manual gearbox with either a six or new eight-

speed automatic gearbox and optional steering wheel shift paddles. This model was the manual version and produces 134bhp from its 1.5 litre petrol engine. The dash to 62mph is achieved in a smidgen over nine seconds and top speed is 127mph. For anyone obsessed with fuel economy, the average is 55 miles per gallon. Diesel fans will like the 2.0-litre, 148bhp Cooper D Clubman with nearly 69 miles to the gallon to boast and performance figures to match most mid-range hot hatches.

Verdict #### If you blindfolded me and took me for a drive in the Clubman I’d have probably guessed I was in an Audi or Golf. But in the driving seat, despite it feeling like no other MINI ever made, the Clubman still retains enough of those unmistakable MINI hatch genes to remind you of the quirkiness and edge it has compared to its counterparts. It’s a car that’ll be sensible like it’s designed to be but being all grown up doesn’t mean it can’t have fun. Minis are unique and the new Clubman is testament to that individual selling point that’s kept our love for the brand unconditional for so long. You can see why so many join their club(man).

Micro-blading by Janette Rickman

Micro-blading might sound like something you’d find in a sports shop, but in fact it’s the new ‘must have’ beauty treatment. The lovely Janette Rickman in Yaxley is one of the only qualified ladies in the area to provide this service. Janette explained that microblading is a new form of eyebrow tattoo treatment – and she’s so delightful, any reservations I had were soon put to rest. I sat back in her soothing studio to learn why Micro-blading is a must have. It turns out it gives a more natural look; it’s a quicker treatment, has a faster healing time and allows hairstrokes to stay defined. And the best news of all, Janette is doing a special offer for the treatment and follow up all for £130 if you buy before Christmas. A great present perhaps for a mum or sister! Check out www.egoeyes.co.uk. You don’t have to go too far away to enjoy some post-Christmas pampering. Why not treat someone special to an Imagine Spa Break at BEST WESTERN PLUS Orton Hall Hotel and Spa right here in Peterborough? This spa break is £85 per person based on two people sharing (a single supplement may apply) so an ideal way to enjoy some ‘me’ time. It includes a relaxing overnight stay with dinner, bed and breakfast, plus 30 minutes of treatment and full use of the leisure facilities and pool. It is available from December 27 – January 4 2016 and sounds perfect for relieving the stresses of the festive season. To book, just call 01733 391111. straighteners they sell, £10 will go back to the charity. They’re sooo pretty and the new top of the range technology means they stay constantly heated at 185 degrees, so when I used them it only took one stroke for my hair to be straight. Amazing! Breast Cancer Now is the UK’s largest breast cancer charity, dedicated to funding research into this devastating disease. One in eight women in the UK will face breast cancer in their lifetime. So this purchase is a great way to give a little something back this Christmas. Speak to Natasha at the John Lewis GHD stand for more info.

And finally one for the guys, the very manly sounding Bulldog skincare range for men. Not only does it have a great name and uses natural ingredients but it’s award winning and great value. Win win! Bulldog have five gift sets this Christmas. The ‘man’s best friend’ range is just £10 and contains a face wash and moisturiser. It’s available at Boots and also in Tesco and Sainsbury’s so you can even sneak it in the trolley during your weekly shop.

BEING

A HUG IS FOR LIFE NOT JUST FOR CHRISTMAS! T

ouch is one of our body’s main physical senses which we all desire and thrive on whether that comes from a hand placed gently on the back, a squeeze of the hand, a hug, our hair being stroked, feet being held, the linking of arms with another or a massage. When our body is touched in this positive way it can have many benefits on our mind, body and emotions.

– Lowering blood pressure

When we experience the warmth and love of a hug or other positive physical touch it sends stimulation via the nerves to the brain to release a hormone known as the ‘love hormone’ called Oxytocin. This love hormone is said to help us feel safer, more trusting and connected. Oxytocin is also called the ‘cuddle hormone’

Massage is of course one way of experiencing the benefits of human touch and is well known to have a range of physical and mental benefits relieving not only aches and pains but mental stresses too. Serenity Loves on Oundle Road offer a full range of massage treatments including, full body, back, neck and shoulder, hot stone therapy, Indian head massage and even pregnancy massage. The therapeutic power of massage is enhanced with the use of essential oils.

Physical touch may also have other benefits such as: – Lowering Cortisol which is the stress hormone – Increase immunity – by lowering the stress hormone which can suppress immunity – Relaxing muscles which can reduce tension

eyelashes etc and not so much thought goes into these types of treatments which can offer so much on the health and wellbeing front.

– Release of endorphins which can release positive feelings – Stimulating healthy levels of serotonin – a chemical that can support mood, appetite, sleep and more

Massage therapist Tirren from Serenity Loves told me – “If you feel better physically you will also feel better mentally. Massage helps improve circulation, the elimination

‘Massage is of course one way of experiencing the benefits of human touch...’ With the Christmas and New Year celebrations starting off now you won’t be short of a therapeutic touch, a hug or even a kiss under the mistletoe along the way, so pucker up and get ready for some of the best (free) medicine around, but remember a hug is good for life not just for Christmas. In fact for the year ahead why not make a physical therapy such as massage or reflexology a part of your health regime. So many splash out hundreds or even thousands of pounds on aesthetic treatments such as nail treatments, eyebrows,

SO COMEDY LIVE

11 DEC

Scottish Comedian Of The Year Award winner Larry Dean brings us the laughs at Stamford Arts Centre with support from Tieran Douieb and special guests. Box office: 01780 763203. The toys are in the shops, the spoilers are on the internet, and people are getting so excited about the new Star Wars film it's like they've just completed the Kessel Run in less than 12 par secs! Now, if you were part of the generation that grew up with the original trilogy of films you'll understand why there's so much anticipation around Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. When I was a youngling, going to the cinema to see Star Wars, the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi was an unforgettable experience. For those like me, our childhood years and Star Wars went hand-in-hand. It captured our hearts and fired our imagination like no other set of films. We relived stories and battles through toys and games and forged a lifelong affinity with even the most

minor of characters. From the sounds of it The Force Awakens looks set to take Star Wars into a new era with the kind of ideas and epic storytelling that made the originals so memorable. My oldest son is the same age I was when I was taken to see The Empire Strikes Back at the cinema so I'm excited that he'll get the chance to see a brand new Star Wars film unfold on the big screen in front of a packed audience. He’s become utterly absorbed in the Star Wars universe over the past few years, while my youngest son at the age of 2 could hum the Star Wars theme before he said his first word! All of which has re-awakened my interest in a film series I thought I'd left behind a long time ago on a housing estate far, far away. Living in Peterborough, we're fortunate

enough to have our own Star Wars actor amongst us. When Warwick Davis turned on the Christmas Lights last year at Serpentine Green I took my son along. He had brought along his Wicket the Ewok cuddly toy and had a smile as wide as 'Beggar’s Canyon' when Warwick was interviewed on stage and said his favourite film role was as Wicket in Return of the Jedi! It's fantastic that Warwick's in the new movie (possibly as a new character) and if you haven't seen the Star Wars sketch he recently made for Children in Need check it out on YouTube. Star Wars has always been an irresistible force of film and fandom, and when we hear that familiar John Williams fanfare strike up at the cinema it all begins again. I can't wait. This will be a Christmas long remembered.

THE POSH PAGE

ESP’s columnist Phil Adlam brings us the exclusives on all things Peterborough United… The feature for Soccer AM was a laugh a minute and as you can see on the club’s YouTube channel, the behind the scenes content provides a giggle from start to finish. “It’s good to be back,” Bullard exclaimed as he met up with former West Ham United team-mate Grant McCann, former Fulham mate Gabriel Zakuani and former Posh star David Farrell.

Jimmy Bullard with ESP’s Phil Adlam

Sometimes when you see people on the television, you wonder whether they will be ‘just like it’ when you come face to face with them in person, but I can assure everyone, that if you encounter Jimmy Bullard in reality, he is just as crazy as he is when you see him prancing about on your TV screen. I’m quite fortunate though, I know what to expect. I’ve been at the football club for 14 years now and encountered Mr Bullard as a young footballer trying to make his way in the game. I had hours of fun trying to interview him (as YouTube will demonstrate) and as a practical joker, there is no one better in the business. So when Soccer AM contacted me recently to arrange a feature involving the former I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here contestant, I nervously clicked yes to the email. When he arrived, I knew it was going to be an eventful day. From the moment he hooted the horn with enthusiasm at the Mick

George Training Ground at the sight of me standing there at the gate, to the big bear hug he gave when he departed hours later, Bullard’s personality was infectious and I genuinely felt shattered at the end of the working day thanks to his non-stop humour. Interviewing him is like eating a tub of Pringles. You start off with the intention of finishing the interview all in one go, but in reality, you need a chance to breathe somewhere in the middle. He gets distracted easily, whether it be my unique fashion sense, my hair or just the fact we both have radio shows, getting a word in with Jimbo is a challenge in itself.

“I love this club,” Bullard continued. “This is where I got my big break in the game so I always have fond memories. There were a few good characters here. We had some good times didn’t we, me and you Phil?” Of course being brought into an interview is always amusing, but he’s right, he was a person, both on and off the pitch who brought entertainment.

After completing the drill for Soccer AM (and joining in with the training session), Bullard retired to the dressing room to see the Posh players had provided a prank in his honour – tying his shoes to the ceiling with a few choice comments about his gear. It brought back happy memories. “See that’s what it’s about, a bit of banter. I must be going soft in my old age letting them get away with that,” Bullard concluded. And with that, he was off. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of this column a Happy Christmas. I hope you all have a great time! Phil

Of course nowadays he can be considered a bit of a celeb. And not just because he starred in a show that had the word Celebrity in its title. It was just over a year ago that he became the first person voted out of the jungle in the ITV show following a bit of ‘banter’ that was taken too far according to the voting public. “I didn’t think it was too bad,” Bullard said. “I might have opened my mouth a little bit too quickly, but it was only a bit of banter. I loved the show and it has done a lot for me since. It was hard though, I thought they would airlift a pizza in, but what you see is what happens and I really struggled with the food. My advice to any contestant would be to smuggle in some salt because the food is so bland,” Bullard recalled.

INTRODUCING:

DARREN JAMES – FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC by Anna Ruggiero Photo: Wayne Williamson www.pixel-logic.co.uk

“I’d always wanted to be a DJ and have what you’d call a natural ear for music. When I was out dancing, I’d listen out for the drop and even sync the tunes together. I learnt on vinyl and I’m happy to say that my career has taken me to some of the best clubs in the world. “My style varies depending on the crowd and one of the most important things as a DJ is reading the crowd. Some like it deep, some like it funky, but I’m always about the killer, not the filler tunes!” Darren is an energetic character and you can see why he does well as the front man on the decks. “I get a nervous kind of excitement before I play and even after all these years, that feeling hasn’t gone.”

I caught up with local DJ legend Darren James who’s been a firm fixture on the house scene for over 18 years now and who’ll be gracing the decks at the Solstice on Boxing Day with the legends that are Alex P and Brandon Block. Darren’s passion for music comes through loud and clear and it’s easy to see why he’s become such a success in the music industry. With clubs like Ministry of Sound, Bora Bora in Ibiza and Pacha in London under his belt, I had a feeling he’d know a thing or two about DJing. He told me: “The key to being a good DJ is to genuinely enjoy what you do, that passion will shine through and the crowd will pick up on that. After all, the DJ is there to create the vibe and I’ll always have a little boogie to my own music.” It all started back in 1989 with a visit to the legendary Gatecrasher Nightclub which propelled Darren into the house scene and after his visit he went home and produced his first mix tape.

Darren also teaches DJing, so if you fancy giving it a go, or would like to book Darren, you can get in touch with him on his Facebook page www.facebook.com/darren.james. So what’s next for the man who’s played alongside the greats such as Mark Knight, David Guetta and The Swedish House Mafia? “You can catch me playing with Alex P and Brandon Block on Boxing Day at the Solstice and I’d like to say a big shout out to Steve Andrews and Sean Boyle for their continued support. On a more national scale, house fans will be aware of the legendary nightclub Egg in London, and I’ll be back there again on Friday December 11. I look forward to seeing you all there!” You can also check out Darren’s Mixcloud page www.mixcloud.com/Discjockey to hear all of his latest mixes and ESP wishes him the best of luck for London and beyond.

Keith says...

The festive season beckons and for those looking for some live music to celebrate with, I have picked out a few choices below that you can consider in the lead up to Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Whatever you decide to do I wish you a very Merry Christmas…

MCV BRING US A NIGHT OF SOUL

They have had yet another very successful year and local soul fans have the opportunity to see the year out with the Motor City Vipers at Radius in Peterborough City Centre. The MCV visit the venue above The

Solstice on Saturday December 19 for Christmas Soul Night Out.

due to their increased popularity on the soul scene.

It’s a real treat as their success has meant that MCV have performed away from the area more this year

This has become an annual event so best secure your tickets before it sells out. ww.motorcityvipers.co.uk

LIVE TUNES ON THE YEAR’S STAMFORD STAGE LIVE AND LOUD

ON NEW

EVE

(keyboards/vocalist T-REX) and with Philip Wright (original lead singer and drummer with Paper Lace), providing vocals and additional percussion. It’s sure to be a night for your air guitars! This is followed on Saturday December 12 by Bootleg Abba’s Christmas Party Night. Bringing all the Abba classic hits to Stamford are one of the most acclaimed tribute acts. They were formed in 1998 and have performed all over the world and if you’re a fan of the music of Abba this will definitely be a perfect way to get in the Christmas mood.

Live music gigs on New Year’s Eve include the ever popular One Eyed Cats at The Brewery Tap, with Dizzy Miss Lizzys at Charters following their brilliant performance at this year’s Beer Festival. There’s a chance to see Reggae maestros Zeb Rootz bring in the New Year at the Anchor Inn at Sutton Bridge and over at Ebeneezers in Woodston it’s Mullered at the Mill. The Cock Inn at Werrington features Ramshackle Serenade, £15 and ticket only including a buffet, it’s also ticket only for Velocity at the Crown on Lincoln Road. In Stamford you can catch the great reggae band Tallawah at Mama Liz’s Voodoo Lounge. Looks like there’s a real mixed bag if you like your New Year’s Eve to be live and loud! Keep checking our gig guide on www.espmag.co.uk for more.

I recently went to a show at The Stamford Corn Exchange and was reminded that the venue has a unique feel to it with an integrated bar and restaurant not to mention a very intimate auditorium which makes you feel very close to the performance.

Finally Saturday December 19 sees a unique appearance by Terry Rice-Milton. Terry was the original voice of Cupids Inspiration and along with some of his fellow original Cupids he brings a Christmas Special to the Corn Exchange.

The Christmas period brings some great entertainment with a festive flavour starting on Saturday December 5 with The Original Jukebox Heroes, who bring a high octane show, with a set list boasting some of the best 70's glam rock tracks . This super-group is made up of six members who have an impressive four decades of live music experience. Featuring Jeff Brown on vocals and bass guitar (Sweet and Tremeloes), Steve Whalley on guitar (Slade frontman), Pete Phipps on drums (original drummer with The Glitter Band, Eurhythmics), Phil Hendriks (The Stiffs, Les McKeown's Bay City Rollers) and Dave Major

Famous for their massive hit Yesterday Has Gone the band originated in Stamford so there is a nostalgic feel to the evening which perfectly suits Christmas. Tickets for these gigs are available from the Stamford Corn Exchange Box Office on 01780 766455.
