Activities close to nature Eskilstuna has a beautiful countryside for you to discover. And if you want to make the most of it while enjoying activities at the same time, you can simply pick and choose. We have numerous nature trails for hiking and biking in varied surroundings, including Näckrosleden, Sörmlandsleden, Gyllenhielmska leden, Lejonrundan and the central river stretch Å-stråket, to mention a few. If you prefer to make your way along the water, there is even a canoeing trail that features both easy and demanding parts. And if you want a challenge: go gliding at Ekeby airstrip, try your hand at Värjan Fencing Club, or ride a mountainbike along the winding woodland biking trail in Odlaren. Eskilstuna’s Light Festival Returns!

On October 21 to 23 a light festival will be held in Eskilstuna. The festival Nattljus was a hit in the autumn of 2014. The festival will return every two years. This autumn the concept is ” From Square to Square ”– from Järntorget in the district Nyfors to Fristadstorget, the heart of the city, where the festival this year will offer an experience where

Parken Zoo in Eskilstuna is a popular, family-friendly destination. At the zoo you have the chance to take a close look at animals such as the Asiatic lion, the Sumatran tiger, Amur leopards, giant anteaters, Komodo dragons and pygmy hippos. In the tropical Amazon house, you can see such animals as Chinese alligators and pygmy marmosets. The animals on display in the Little Zoo are not quite as exotic, but there is a significant advantage to this: children are more than welcome to pet them! The animals here include mini-pigs, alpacas, horses and rabbits. The Wilma & Morris Playground gives children the chance to get to know Wilma the red panda and Morris the otter from the Himalayas. In spring and summer, the large outdoor stage hosts concerts by well-known Swedish artists. parkenzoo.se

In the heart of Eskilstuna you will find the Rademacher Forges, an open-air museum consisting of a number of well-preserved timber buildings from Reinhold Rademacher’s manufacturing business from the 1650’s. Large outdoor notice boards present the ‘Forgotten stories’ photo exhibition, which tells of the people who once lived and worked here. One of the houses is the Museum Smithy, a blacksmith’s workshop and home from the early 1800’s. The area has a number of small companies where traditional arts and crafts items are made for sale. Flea markets and other markets are held here all year round, and the outdoor stage is used for open-air theatrical performances in the summer. While you are here, make sure to visit Restaurant Jernberghska, which serves delicious meals and is recommended in the White Guide.

Köpmangatan in Eskilstuna still has the same stretch as during the Middle Ages. Moreover, many of the wooden buildings from the 1700’s and 1800’s still remain today, due to the fact that Eskilstuna has never suffered from ravages of a city-wide fire - which is quite unsual. The area is distinguished by its numerous charming cafés, stores and art galleries. Take a walk through this part of the city, peep into some of the courtyards and immerse yourself in history.

THE OLD TOWN

> CITY BIKING Follow Eskilstuna’s special cycle track signs to find your way quick and easy from one place to another by bike. The route, which mostly covers the same area as the bus lines, focuses on various sights of interest. You can rent bikes from Eskilstuna Tourist Center, where you also borrow helmets. If you prefer cross country cycling, you have every opportunity to do so as well. For further information, see the list at the end of this magazine.

DISCOVER OUR NEW SWIMMING CENTRE Munktellbadet opens 28 May and is an extraordinary swimming centre. It comprises a total of 9 500 square meters, open to all. The building is located directly adjacent to the Eskilstuna River with a detachable 50-meter pool, flexible training facilities and a family-friendly area with lots of fun for children - a paddling pool, a mini water slide and television among other things. For the young and daring there is a climbing wall with a waterfall, a water stream and a jacuzzi. This ultra-modern facility is environmentally friendly, meeting with the Swedish Green Building Councils requirements for Miljöbyggnad Guld (Green Building Gold).

Some 3 km east of Eskilstuna city centre, you will find Ekeby wetlands – the largest constructed wetland in Scandinavia. More than 150 species of bird can be spotted here. It is a wonderful place to have a picnic, go for a walk, watch the birds and take photos. If you like to look at birds together with other birdwatching enthusiasts, make sure not to miss ‘Birdwatching Day’ on 7 May. – A LITTLE GEM ON THE SHORES OF LAKE MÄLAREN One of the treasures in Eskilstuna is to be found about 10 km north-east of the city centre. The heart of this area is without doubt Sundbyholm’s white castle. Surrounded by the northernmost beech woods in Europe, it stands proudly on the top of a hill, overlooking both the castle grounds and Lake Mälaren. Right nearby, you will find Sundbyholmsbadet, with the longest sandy beach in the county of Sörmland. In the summer, just like the castle grounds, the beach is filled with keen sunbathers and swimmers. Sundbyholm is also home of the Sigurd Rock Carving, which tells a part of the 1000 year old famous Sigurd Saga. It is one of Sweden’s foremost ancient remains, being in an excellent condition and telling such a well-known story. His Royal Highness Prince Eugén spent the summer of 1893 at Sundbyholm Castle. It was during this visit that he completed his famous painting entitled Det gamla slottet (The Old Castle) which, along with another of his paintings Molnet (The Cloud), is one of his most well-known works. Trotting track and riding arena The Sundbyholm Trotting Track hosts not only trotting events, but also various types h ot Gr of entertainment and other r e :P get-togethers. to o Ph There are two restaurants and a pub, and trotting meets are often accompanied by performances by pop singers and groups, which makes trotting an event for all the family to enjoy. The biggest trotting events of the year include the ICA Maxi Eskilstuna Fyraåringstest with V86 in July, and the Breeders’ Crown finals with V75 in november. In 2012 an international quality show-jumping arena was built in the centre of the trotting track. The 95 x 70 m jumping area and the 25 x 70 m dressage area both have a top-quality fibre sand surface, and in the coming year they will be hosting events including the Swedish Show-jumping Championships in August and the Sundbyholm Summer Games in the end of July to beginning of August. TORSHÄLLA

Torshälla has a population of 9,500 and is located just about 7 km north of Eskilstuna. Despite its small size, the town is home to a great deal of culture and has numerous historical settings that are well worth exploring. For example, in the old part of Torshälla, you can visit Torshälla mill, dating back to the 1600’s and now houses a library and an art gallery. Another interesting sight is Torshälla Church, with its extraordinary frescoes and medieval wooden sculptures. It was in Torshälla that the multitalented artist Allan Ebeling lived and worked. His works can be seen in the Ebeling Museum and on public places

in the town of Torshälla. Vatten bärerskan at Östra Torget square and Tors bockar in the Torshälla River are two of his most well-known works. Next to the Ebeling Museum you find the studio of Gunilla Lifvergren, the glass artist. Gunilla is happy to receive visitors by arrangement (gul.nu). Situated close to Lake Mälaren, the small town has its own harbour, where you can board the M/S Havsörnen, which will carry you through the archipelago to Sundbyholm or Västerås. Another option is to enjoy shrimps and live music on board the M/S Tor.

The Torshälla Museum of Local History – Bergströmska gården – is an excellent example of Torshälla in the 1700’s. This particular estate survived the great fire of 1798, and still stands proudly as one of the few museums of local history still on its original site. The museum hosts a variety of events during the summer months, such as an arts and crafts market, a flower market, and singing and music events. The museum is also open during the Torshälla Market in September, and the Torshälla Christmas market.

THE TOWN OF TORSHÄLLA – 700TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2017 The countdown has begun. 24 February next year marks the 700th anniversary of Torshälla, and preparations to celebrate this impressive milestone have already started. A great deal of work is being done to prepare Torshälla for its anniversary year, which will feature all kinds of events and activities organised by Torshälla residents, associations, companies and other participants. The actual birthday party will be a special anniversary week, held in July. If you would like to take part in the festivities, make sure to be in Torshälla the last week of July in 2017. The Rademacher Forges (G-H6) is an open-air museum in the heart of Eskilstuna. Open all year round, it shows a number of very well preserved houses on their original spots at ReinholdRademacher’s blacksmith business, dating back to the 1650’s. Today, the area also houses working craftsmen, a museum, café and restaurant. HIKING AND BIKING TRAILS

Sörmlandsleden The Sörmland Hiking Trail is one of the longest nature and culture trails in Sweden, and a pioneer among lowland trails. When the trail was officially opened in 1973, it covered 320 km. Today, it is 1,000 km long. The route meanders through a varied nature and a cultural landscape, dotted with historical memorials. The trail is clearly marked with signposts and S-posts, as well as orange-coloured rings around trees and posts. In some parts, it is marked with the colour blue, which means that the stretch in question is part of a circuit. The section signs present facts, maps and descriptions of the immediately preceding and following sections. The route features numerous resting places, often with stone fire places. In some places, there are even shelters where you can spend the night. sormlandsleden.se Gyllenhielmska leden This hiking trail runs from Årbystugan via Sundbyholm to Björsund by Lake Mälaren. The entire trail is 36 km long, but you can easily choose to walk parts of it. The route leads through woods, across hilltops and alongside fields. The countryside that lines the route is a delight in spring and autumn, too.eskilstuna.nu Fogdöns Pilgrimsled This old pilgrims’ route runs from the cathedral in Strängnäs to Björsund on the northern end of the Fogdön peninsula. It is a hiking trail composed of minor gravel roads trails and paths, passing through open land and woods. It covers a total of 60 km. pilgrimsled.se Lejonrundan This is a 14 km biking trail. It is a family-friendly option, suited to easy, gentle biking both in the city centre and through the varied countryside nearby. The route is signposted with

an image of a black lion’s paw on a dark yellow background. cykelframjandet.se Näckrosleden is a regional biking trail that winds its way through all the local authorities in Sörmland. It links local cycle paths with nature trails, and covers a total distance of 700 km. The cycling surface is half gravel and half asphalt. The route is signposted in both directions with yellow signs with black text. There are places to stay at the end of each leg of the route. sormlandsturism.se Mälardalsleden passes Sundbyholm, Torshälla and Eskilstuna, and follows a largely car-free network of biking trails through the built-up area of Eskilstuna. svenska-cykelsallskapet.se Odlarens mountainbikeled The mountainbike trail runs through the forest by the water tower, just opposite the school building of Odlarskolan, close to the hospital. There is a way up to the water tower where the track has its start and ending points and where there is a map on the notice board, showing the different paths to bike. The track is in broken grounds consisting of steep hills, and is marked by arrows showing the biking direction. Don’t forget helmet while biking the track. eskilstuna.nu
