Welcome to my Eskilstuna “Eskilstuna is my home town, a city that is constantly evolving. I have lived here for eight years and during this time I have come to appreciate Eskilstuna more and more. I love the short distances in the city which makes the bike an excellent way of transportation. I have spent most of my time in the Vilsta area, where I would like to allege the best gymnastic hall in Sweden is located. In Vilsta there is always something going on, gymnastics competitions, dog shows, an orienteering competition or a market. In the summer you can have a run in the tracks, and during the winter they are excellent for skiing. When I have a day off, I like to take a walk along the river in to the town and enjoy a nice lunch with my friends. Welcome to discover our nice city! ”

“My Eskilstuna is brave! Here we dare to invest in new and untested ideas and see opportunities. Everything is closeby; beautiful parks, city life and rich nature, accessible to everyone! I prefer to spend most of my time in the world’s coolest mall - ReTuna Recycling mall! ” ANNA BERGSTRÖM MALL MANAGER RETUNA

Fresh air, untouched countryside and clean water. Welcome to Eskilstuna for wonderful relaxation and exciting outdoor adventures.

Spend the holidays outdoors ENJOY BEACH LIFE AND HISTORY IN SUNDBYHOLM Magnificent Sundbyholm Castle lies on the shores of Lake Mälaren. The castle was built in the 17th century and is today a delightful hotel and conference facility. South of the castle is one of Sweden’s foremost unique runecarving from the 11th century, Sigurdsristningen, situated. After a visit at the runecarving you can enjoy a pleasant summer day observing the boats in the harbor, go on a boat trip, paddle a canoe, take a stroll in the Castle Park, have a nice lunch at one of the cafes or restaurants or take a refreshing swim at the longest beach of Lake Mälaren. In the winter when the ice has settled it is a perfect place to go long-distance skating or ice-yachting. THE FISH ARE BITING! Fishing rainbow trout in the middle of the city? Yes, it is quite possible in Eskilstunaån. But remember that you need a fishing license for some parts of the river. In Lake Mälaren outside Sundbyholm, you can catch pike and perch. More fishing is to be had at the small islands at the eastern part of the lake Hjälmaren.

- the charming town in town Torshälla has a population of just above 10 000 and is located about 7 km north of Eskilstuna. Despite its small size, the town is home to a great deal of culture and has numerous historical settings that are well worth exploring. THE TORSHÄLLA MUSEUM OF LOCAL HISTORY Bergströmska gården is an excellent example of how the mansions in Torshälla looked during the 1700s. Visit eskilstuna.nu for opening hours. Another interesting sight is Torshälla Church, with its extraordinary frescoes and medieval wooden sculptures. Torshälla is the town where the multitalented artist Allan Ebeling lived and

12 / ESKILSTUNA.NU

worked. His works can be seen in the Ebeling Museum and on public places in the town of Torshälla.” Vattenbärerskan” at Östra Torget square and “Tors bockar” in the Torshälla River are two of his most well-known works. The same building that houses the Ebeling Museum is also home to Rolf Berg Keramik – a ceramic studio and shop. While the company is best known for its Santa Claus figures in all shapes and sizes, it also sells ceramic items suited to other times of the year.

ALLAN EBELING’S SCULPTURE ”TORS BOCKAR” Thor’s goats, on display in the middle of the Torshälla river, symbolises the city’s pagan past.

ALLAN EBELINGS KUNSTWERK ”TORS BOCKAR” Tors Böcke steht mitten im Fluss Torshällaån und symbolisiert die heidnische Vergangenheit der Stadt.

THE CHURCH THAT IS OLDER THAN TORSHÄLLA The oldest parts of Torshälla Church was built in the 1100s to replace a previous wooden church. It is likely that the site was originally a place of sacrifice in honour of the Asa-god Thor – Thorshaergh – from where Torshälla takes its name. The artist Albertus Pictor decorated the walls with a number of paintings, one of which features what is believed to be the oldest depiction of glasses in Sweden.

MÄLARBADEN & WÄSBY MAGASIN Visit Wäsby Magasin, a rural idyll that houses a mix of the past and the present, with modern shopping of clothes and interior design, art gallery, cheese and flower shop, ceramic studio and a café and in a traditional Swedish rural environment. It’s located in Mälarbaden, a nice bathing area with camping and golf course, just outside Torshälla.

TAKE A BOATTRIP Torshälla’s proximity to Lake Mälaren provides ample opportunities to enjoy different outdoor activities. Bring your family or friends on a cruise with the boat M/S Havsörnen and enjoy delicious food and the scenic views. More info: eskilstuna.nu
