Dean’s Message

ESC Rennes of School of Business is an international management school in France. 80% of its faculty and 33% of its students are international. This cultural melting pot ensures a rich study environment based on an exchange of diverse viewpoints and experiences. Founded by companies from Brittany in 1990, ESC Rennes School of Business has kept its close links with the business world and these continue to have a strong impact on the content of our academic programs.

Focusing firmly on practical applications, our Executive MBA provides access to the very latest insights into leadership management and corporate social responsibility and assures competency in the core management skills. Concepts, tools and skills are acquired in an interactive manner through case study work, business simulations, business plans and the analysis of real business organisations. Our alumni describe the program as demanding and intensive, but highly rewarding.

Recent developments, notably the financial crisis, have clearly demonstrated the need for managers to adopt a different pattern of behaviour and to learn new skills. Today, managers face the challenges of increasingly intense international competition, a changing global context with complex environmental and social consequences and growing criticism from stakeholders such as non-governmental organisations.

TEACHING

The purpose of the EMBA program is to prepare practising managers and entrepreneurs to lead complex business operations in a global and changing environment. Its integrated learning approach provides students with the tools to develop innovative solutions, to implement sustainable strategies and to achieve a sound financial, social and environmental performance. The Executive MBA of ESC Rennes School of Business emphasises Sustainable Performance. In the different sessions and activities the theme of sustainable performance will be approached from several angles. Participants are challenged to develop solutions to a wide range of business problems and to critically evaluate their own management practise.

This EMBA program addresses all these issues and provides a wide range of learning opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Program participants typically represent a wide range of nationalities, industries and professional experiences. The active exchange of ideas, positions and experiences and intensive collaboration on a diversity of projects and assignments constitutes a vital element in the overall learning experience.

APPLYING MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Assessment of the impact of environmental forces on business.

Linkage of concepts and application of tools learnt in the first five modules while working on more complex projects reflecting realistic and real business situations.

• Economics & Geopolitics Analyses of the impact of economic and geopolitical factors on international trade and business organisations in the context of increasing globalization. • International Business Law Introduction to a wide range of legal problems involving international trade and business transactions in the European Union. After an introduction and background on the institutions, students will learn to identify potential legal issues and develop adequate strategies for dealing with them in an international business environment. • Managing Sustainability Focus on how business impacts social, environmental and economic development and on how firms can improve their social and environmental performance. For this purpose, management tools such as the Guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative, ISO 14001, ISO 26000 and stakeholder management will be examined.

• Team Strategic Consulting Project In this project, students will work in groups in order to offer a company or an organisation consulting on a strategic issue. The students will acquire consulting skills, identify strategic issues and define a project objective in collaboration with the company’s management. After an analysis of the external and internal business environment they will develop alternative recommendations and an accompanying implementation plan. • Developing a new Business the Entrepreneurial way Understanding of the entrepreneurship spirit and strategical analysis of business opportunities and research and development of a formal business plan for a new enterprise.

• The International Business Study Tour Application of concepts learnt during the first 3 courses of the global environment module. The course will expand EMBA students’ vision and understanding of international business by giving them the opportunity to observe and analyze firsthand how cultural and other environmental forces impact management practices and business operations in a different national context.

FINANCIAL AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

CORPORATE STRATEGIES FOR LONG-TERM PERFORMANCE

THE OBJECTIVE

Introduction to key concepts which link operating performance and financial resources by using modern management control tools.

Acquirement of the fundamental knowledge and skills regarding corporate strategy, introduction to the key concepts and practices of marketing management, development of a marketing plan for a product or service, and an overview of innovation and knowledge management.

• Financial Statement Analysis Focus on “fundamental” financial analysis encompassing both the evaluation of the quality of financial information and the utility of this information to appraise a firm’s financial condition. • Management Accounting and Control The management of a firm creates new demands and requirements addressed by accounting and control information systems. The course aims to develop the participant’s critical awareness of the function of those systems for decision makers. • Operations Management This topic has become of strategic importance in the performance of manufacturing and services companies. This course aims to provide participants with a conceptual understanding of operations and supply chain management and underlines its links with other business functions. • International Finance The corporate management requires from decision makers multiple skills to assess risks and opportunities related to the globalization of the economy. At the end of this course, participants will be able to identify the major risks threatening a business and to take profits from synergies resulting form mergers or acquisitions.

• Strategic Analysis Focus on how to carry out a strategic diagnosis of internal and external environmental factors influencing the performance of the firm. Students learn to identify major strategic problems and challenges as well as make strategic decisions. • Marketing Management Presentation of marketing concepts such as market segmentation, models of consumer behaviour and market research methods. Analysis of customer orientation in order to differentiate the marketing of physical products and services. • Marketing Strategy Development of a marketing plan by analysing branding, pricing, distribution and communication strategies through contemporary case studies covering a crosssection of geographic regions and industry sectors. The course links marketing to other functional areas and to a company’s overall sustainability strategy. • Creativity, Innovation and Knowledge Management Investigations of concepts related to the development of creativity and innovation in firms as well as their knowledge management strategies. The course, using the LEGO serious playTM approach, focuses on the importance of innovation and knowledge sharing as a means to gain competitive advantage in today’s turbulent and fastchanging markets.

DEVELOPING & IMPLEMENTING A BUSINESS STRATEGY

THE OBJECTIVE

In a global business environment that is changing rapidly, high performing organisations need leaders who can effectively utilise human resources across borders, deal with the challenges of cultural differences, and successfully manage change. This module provides students with a forum for exploring and discussing concepts,applied models and best practices associated with leading in times of globalization and change.

Design and implementation of a strategy by learning how a firm manages its product/market portfolio, how it differentiates itself and creates unique value for customers, and how it grows and manages global operations.

• Leadership Development of students’ self-awareness by enabling them to understand how their personality impacts their current job performance. Self-reflection, role plays, and other team exercises are designed to encourage creative use of resources and explore possibilities with respect to an existing job. Students also learn to identify and develop behaviours and attitudes which will help them successfully reach their career goals. • Human Resource Management Focus on the strategic role of HRM in an international context, and how it may contribute to corporate success and the development of leaders. More specifically, the course focuses on how managers can successfully contribute to the proper implementation of their company’s HR strategy, and how HR can support management in its role. • Cross-Cultural Management & Negotiation of cultural factors Analysis of how cultural factors influence management and negotiation, and development of the skills needed to manage effectively in cross-cultural situations. Students learn how to manage and lead culturally diverse individuals and teams in an increasingly global business environment. • Managing change Design and implementation of a change project in line with the global strategy of the firm and taking into account the economic, social and strategic characteristics specific to the context.

• Strategy Management Analysis of the global dynamics and capabilities of organisations, from start-ups to multinationals. The course enables students to develop the framework of a business plan at the company or business unit level, applying key concepts such as competitive analysis, portfolio management, global expansion and organisation, and corporate social responsibility. • During the Business Simulation working in teams applying the concepts of the course Strategy Management.

INDIVIDUAL GRADUATING PROJECT, producing a white paper

As a cornerstone of the program, participants are requested to write a White Paper. A white paper is an authoritative report that helps solve a problem, make decisions, educate and/or assist management with expert opinions and relevant research. As a marketing tool, these papers use selected facts and logical arguments to build a case. • Participants select a relevant management topic of research. • They are assigned an academic supervisor to coach them in literature review, data collection, data analysis and conclusions drawn. • The final product is a paper of approximately 50 pages. • The project generally takes 6 months to complete.

ESC Rennes School of Business is located in Rennes, 2 hours from Paris by the high-speed TGV train. The French press consistently ranks Rennes as one of the best large cities of France to live in. With a population of 400 000, Rennes offers all the advantages of a large city - professional sports facilities, theatre, opera, museums, libraries, and world-class cuisine - in a "user-friendly" size. Rennes is also the driving force of Brittany’s dynamic economy and home to leading firms in high tech, telecommunications, tourism, transportation, logistics, food-agribusiness, and service industries.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH DEPARTMENTS Full-time academic staff (87% of whom hold a Doctorate degree) of ESC Rennes School of Business is part of in the 3 teaching & research departments of the business school: • Strategy & Marketing • Finance & Operations • Management & Organisation Teaching combines an analytical review of management theories anchored to a firm foundation of management practice. A student tutoring system, company internships, work on case studies and business simulations are all used to complement theoretical courses. Because of its cultural diversity ( 80% of our full-time academic staff are international, representing 28 nationalities) and the variety of experience, the permanent faculty mirror the global environment in which companies are developing today.

BUSINESS CHAIRS Research chairs led by ESC Rennes School of Business in partnership with large multinational business groups are designed to help the partner businesses in its own reflections and to allow students to benefit from the results of the research.

2 RESEARCH CENTRES Research activity is principally located in 2 research centres. They are real hubs of innovation, expertise and experience in Rennes. THE Centre for Technology & Innovation Management ESC Rennes is developing an expertise in the management of emerging industries and in the convergence of technologies and biological sciences such as the management of biotechnologies. Our academic staff, expert in this field, elaborates methodologies and tools to approach nascent markets and to help companies to develop strategies & specific marketing approaches. The Centre for Responsible Business This research centre comprises academic staff who focus their expertise around 3 major themes: sustainable development, business ethics & diversity management. The synergy between researchers, entrepreneurs, managers, teachers & students contributes to the emergence of real business solutions.

THE CHAIR This chair is aimed at the development of a research program which brings together 4 dimensions: future directions, a worldwide focus, company governance and the common good. The work between the global business group and the ESC Rennes School of Business on image contributes to the continuous improvement project of CANON and prepares students at the ESC Rennes School of Business to face the issues of sustainable development, corporate social responsibility and company governance.
